Air India has announced mandatory banned-substance testing for all its pilots, expanding significantly beyond India’s existing random-testing requirements.

The decision follows an incident involving an Air India flight from Phuket to Delhi on 4 August. Shortly after departure, the Airbus reportedly lost around 91 metres (300 feet) in altitude, injuring 17 passengers and crew members.

A preliminary account indicated that the senior pilot was required to undergo another substance test. Media reports have claimed that an earlier test detected marijuana, although the investigation has not yet reached a final conclusion.

Both pilots have been removed from flying duties while Indian aviation authorities investigate the incident with assistance from Airbus and France’s air-safety agency.

The testing will take place alongside training sessions at Air India’s aviation academy and at locations such as briefing centres and company offices.

In an internal memo reported by the BBC, the airline said the initiative goes beyond regulatory requirements and is intended to reinforce safety, professionalism and public confidence.

Air India remains under scrutiny

The announcement comes while Air India continues to face intense scrutiny over aviation safety. In June 2025, an Air India flight from Ahmedabad to London crashed shortly after take-off, killing 241 people aboard the aircraft and 19 people on the ground. One passenger survived.

The airline has also recently undergone a leadership change, with former Ethiopian Airlines chief executive Tewolde Gebremariam taking charge of Air India.

At around dawn, officers stopped a van travelling through the area and searched the vehicle. Police said they discovered approximately 290 kilograms of cannabis concealed inside.

Investigators suspect that the cannabis was intended to be transported from the Tamil Nadu coast to Sri Lanka.

The proposal, known as the Safe Sips Act of 2026, would direct federal regulators to create a single color-coded warning system for intoxicating beverages.

Introduced by Republican Congressman Nick LaLota of New York, the bill responds to concerns that THC seltzers, alcoholic drinks, kratom beverages, energy drinks and ordinary sparkling water can sometimes look surprisingly similar.

How Would the Color-Coding System Work?

Under the proposed legislation, beverages containing an intoxicating substance would use one federally selected color on the part of the container from which the drink is opened or poured.

This could include:

The top of a beverage can
A bottle cap
A lid or cork
A nozzle, spout or other dispensing point

A first-of-its-kind Colorado program suggests that reimbursing carefully supervised medical cannabis could help selected chronic-pain patients improve their quality of life and reduce their reliance on opioids.

Medical cannabis is often discussed as an alternative treatment for chronic pain, but patients injured at work may face a major obstacle: workers’ compensation insurers do not always reimburse cannabis-related expenses.

A program led by the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment’s Division of Workers’ Compensation has now examined whether medical cannabis could be safely reimbursed as part of a coordinated pain-management plan.

The results were encouraging. Over 12 months, the participating patient reported lower pain, better physical functioning, improved mobility, greater psychosocial stability and a higher overall quality of life. No adverse safety events were reported during the evaluation.

This was an evaluation involving one rigorously screened patient—not a large randomized clinical trial. The findings show that reimbursement may be feasible for certain patients, but they do not prove that medical cannabis will work safely or effectively for everyone.

How the Colorado Program Worked

Patient Voluntarily Reduced Opioid Use by 17%

Commercial drones were designed for photography, deliveries and agriculture. Criminal networks, however, have discovered another use: transporting illegal drugs across heavily guarded borders and dropping contraband inside prisons.

Drones are relatively inexpensive, widely available and remotely operated. Smugglers can send a package without physically crossing a border or meeting the receiver. If authorities intercept the aircraft, they lose the drone and its cargo—but not necessarily a human courier who could be arrested and questioned.

Punjab Became a Major Drone-Smuggling Route

The India-Pakistan border in Punjab has emerged as one of the clearest examples of this changing trafficking method.

During 2023, the Border Security Force shot down or recovered 107 drones along the Punjab border. Official data cited at the time also recorded the seizure of approximately 442.39 kilograms of heroin, along with weapons and ammunition, across the Punjab frontier. Many of the recovered drones were commercially manufactured models found in agricultural fields near the border.

The activity continued to increase. By July 9, 2024, the BSF had already intercepted 125 drones, surpassing the total recorded during the whole of 2023. By October 2024, reported recoveries had reached 181.

Drones carrying crystal meth have been intercepted while travelling from Syria towards Jordan. Criminal organisations connected with the Syrian drug economy have reportedly explored drones as land-border enforcement has become tighter.

In Europe, traffickers have experimented with much larger machines. Spanish police previously seized three semi-submersible drones designed to transport as much as 200 kilograms of drugs each across the Strait of Gibraltar.

Unlike small flying drones, these remotely operated vessels were reportedly intended to move larger shipments between Morocco and Spain.

Drones Are Also Targeting Prisons

Prisons have become another major target because a small package containing drugs, phones or other contraband can be extremely valuable inside a secured facility.

In response to increasing drone drops, the British government introduced restricted airspace around prisons in England and Wales. Flying a drone within 400 metres of protected prison airspace without permission can result in criminal proceedings.

Similar incidents have been reported in Canada, the United States, France, Brazil and Australia.

Can Authorities Stop Drone Smuggling?

Law-enforcement agencies are investing in radar systems, radio-frequency detection, cameras and other counter-drone technology. Investigators can also examine recovered aircraft, controllers, digital records and packaging for evidence.

But the challenge continues to evolve. Commercial drones are becoming more powerful, easier to operate and capable of carrying heavier loads.

Himachal Pradesh Legalises Controlled Cannabis Cultivation for Medicine and Researc

Himachal Pradesh has officially opened the door to legal cannabis cultivation—but only inside a tightly controlled system created for medicinal and scientific purposes.

The state has notified the Himachal Pradesh Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (Amendment) Rules, 2026, covering the cultivation, storage, transportation, research, processing and manufacturing of cannabis-based products.

With this development, Himachal Pradesh has been reported as the third Indian state, after Uttarakhand and Madhya Pradesh, to permit controlled cannabis cultivation under a regulated framework.

This Is Not Recreational Cannabis Legalisation

The biggest point to understand is that the new rules do not legalise recreational cannabis or allow people to grow the plant freely at home or on ordinary farms.

Cannabis cultivated under the policy can only be used for authorised medicinal and scientific purposes. Licence holders cannot personally consume, sell or transport any part of the plant unless specifically permitted under the approved framework.

Any cultivation outside the licensing system will continue to be treated as illegal.

Cannabis Cannot Be Grown in Open Fields

The government has introduced strict conditions to prevent diversion into the illegal market.

Private cultivation can only take place on a geographically connected landholding measuring at least three acres. The crop must be grown inside enclosed and controlled structures such as greenhouses or polyhouses located within fully fenced premises.

High in the mountains of Himachal Pradesh, cannabis grows naturally across remote parts of the Kullu Valley. For some local families, hand-rubbed hash has long been connected to culture, tourism and seasonal income. Under Indian law, however, producing or selling it without authorization can carry serious criminal penalties.

This contrast—between cultural acceptance and legal prohibition—is at the centre of India’s growing cannabis debate.

Cannabis Has Deep Cultural Roots in India

Cannabis has been associated with Indian traditions for centuries. It appears in ancient religious literature and remains closely connected with Lord Shiva. Bhang is still consumed during festivals such as Holi and Shivratri, while sadhus are often seen using traditional chillums at religious gatherings.

However, India’s laws do not treat every part of the cannabis plant equally.

The Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985 defines cannabis primarily as charas—the separated resin of the plant—and ganja, meaning its flowering or fruiting tops. Seeds and leaves are excluded when they are not accompanied by those tops.

This is why bhang, traditionally made from cannabis leaves, is not controlled directly by the NDPS Act. It is instead regulated through individual state excise laws. That does not mean bhang is automatically legal everywhere; its production, sale and possession depend on state-level rules.

What Does the NDPS Act Actually Punish?

Unauthorised cultivation, possession, production, transport and sale of ganja or charas remain criminal offences.

The punishment for possession depends on the quantity involved. A small-quantity offence can result in imprisonment of up to one year, a fine of up to ₹10,000, or both. Quantities above the notified small limit but below the commercial threshold can attract up to ten years in prison.

Commercial-quantity offences carry between ten and twenty years of rigorous imprisonment, along with significant fines. Unauthorised cultivation of a cannabis plant can also result in imprisonment of up to ten years.

Consumption is treated separately under Section 27. For cannabis, it can attract imprisonment of up to six months, a fine of up to ₹10,000, or both. These distinctions are important because possession and consumption are not the same offence.

Delhi High Court Orders a Policy Review

A major development arrived on January 23, 2026, when the Delhi High Court concluded proceedings in a petition filed by the Great Legalisation Movement India Trust.

The Court did not legalize or decriminalize cannabis. Instead, it directed the Union government to conduct a stakeholder consultation and examine whether provisions relating to cannabis under the NDPS Act and NDPS Rules should be relaxed—and, if so, for which purposes.

The Court ordered a policy decision within six months, placing the deadline around July 23, 2026. It also allowed the petitioner to revive the case if no decision is taken. At the time of writing, no final policy decision had been publicly announced.

Does This Mean Cannabis Could Soon Be Legal?

Not necessarily.

India’s existing law already permits cannabis-related activity under regulated conditions for medical and scientific research. Section 14 also allows governments to authorize cultivation for fibre, seed and horticultural purposes—creating space for industrial hemp.

Any reform may therefore focus on medical access, scientific research, industrial cultivation or reduced punishment rather than nationwide recreational legalization.

India’s federal structure adds another complication. States already regulate bhang differently, and their approaches to alcohol and other intoxicants vary widely. Even if the central framework changes, cannabis policy may continue to look different from one state to another.

India is unlikely to settle its cannabis debate overnight. But the Delhi High Court’s direction has forced a serious question into public policy: can a plant with deep cultural, medical and industrial connections continue to be governed primarily through criminal law?

Authorities recovered approximately 419 kilograms of ganja from a pickup truck in Bihar’s Madhubani district during a joint operation involving the local police and Special Task Force.

Four people were arrested in connection with the consignment, including Vinod Sahni, whom investigators have identified as the alleged main accused in the trafficking network. The origin and intended destination of the cannabis remain under investigation.

Dial 112 Driver Accused of Helping Traffickers

The case became more serious after investigators reportedly found evidence suggesting that the driver of a Dial 112 emergency-response vehicle had colluded with the alleged traffickers.

Some reports claim that the police vehicle was travelling ahead of the cannabis-loaded pickup truck, potentially acting as an escort. However, the precise involvement of each accused person has yet to be established through the investigation and court proceedings.

Three police personnel were subsequently suspended for different reasons.

Given the seriousness of the allegations, Mithila Range Deputy Inspector General Manoj Kumar Tiwari visited the police station concerned and personally reviewed the investigation.

Police are now questioning the arrested suspects to identify the source of the cannabis, its proposed delivery location and other people who may be connected with the alleged trafficking network.

Nepal Border Remains a Smuggling Challenge

Madhubani shares an international border with Nepal, and the region contains numerous roads and remote crossing points. Authorities regularly conduct operations against the illegal movement of cannabis, liquor and other contraband through this area.

The latest seizure is significant not only because of its size but also because of the suspected involvement of people connected with law enforcement.

If the allegations are substantiated, the case would demonstrate how trafficking networks may attempt to exploit official vehicles or local connections to avoid inspection.

For now, the investigation remains active. The arrested individuals are accused—not convicted—and the suspected involvement of police personnel will need to be established through evidence and the legal process.

America’s cannabis map has changed again. Georgia has replaced its restrictive low-THC system with a broader medical cannabis programme, becoming the 41st state with comprehensive medical access.

Meanwhile, recreational cannabis remains legal in 24 states, although the rules covering possession, home cultivation and retail sales differ considerably.

The 24 States Where Recreational Cannabis Is Legal

Adults aged 21 or older can legally possess cannabis under state law in:

Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia and Washington.

Washington, D.C. also permits adult possession and limited home cultivation, but it is not a state and still faces federal restrictions on establishing a normal recreational retail market.

Virginia presents an unusual situation. Adult possession has been legal since 2021, but licensed recreational stores have not yet opened. The state plans to launch regulated retail sales on July 1, 2027, with as many as 350 stores expected to receive authorization.

States Allowing Medical Cannabis Only

Seventeen states permit comprehensive medical cannabis but have not legalized recreational use:

Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Nebraska, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Texas, Utah and West Virginia.

Patients generally require a qualifying medical condition and registration with a state programme. However, permitted products, THC limits and rules surrounding cannabis flower vary between states.

Georgia Expands Its Medical Programme

Georgia’s Senate Bill 220 took effect on July 1, 2026. It replaced the state’s “low-THC oil” terminology with “medical cannabis” and expanded the products available to registered patients.

The law removed earlier potency restrictions, added more qualifying medical conditions and permitted cannabis flower for vaporization. Smoking cannabis remains prohibited.

Georgia is also unusual because licensed independent pharmacies can participate in dispensing medical cannabis—something not generally permitted elsewhere in the United States.

States With Limited Access or No Comprehensive Programme

Nine states still lack a comprehensive medical cannabis system:

Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Wisconsin and Wyoming.

Several of these states permit narrowly defined CBD or low-THC products for particular medical conditions. However, these limited laws should not be confused with full medical cannabis programmes offering regulated access to different cannabis products.

What Changed at the Federal Level?

In April 2026, the U.S. Department of Justice moved state-licensed medical cannabis and FDA-approved marijuana products from Schedule I to Schedule III.

This was a historic shift, but it did not federally legalize recreational cannabis. Adult-use marijuana and products operating outside qualifying medical systems remain prohibited under federal law.

The government has also been considering a broader change to marijuana’s federal classification. Until that process is completed, the difference between federal and state cannabis laws will continue to create confusion.

Which States Could Change Next?

Florida may again consider recreational legalization, although any constitutional amendment would require at least 60% voter approval.

Hawaii has repeatedly debated adult-use legislation and could pursue a future ballot proposal. Iowa may expand its highly restricted medical programme, while Pennsylvania continues to debate recreational legalization as most of its neighbouring states already allow adult use.

The overall direction is clear: cannabis access continues to expand across America, but “legal” does not mean the same thing everywhere. Travellers and consumers should always check local possession, purchasing, transport and public-consumption rules before carrying or using cannabis.

Pakistan Cricketer Mohammad Nawaz Sanctioned After Cannabis-Related Positive Test

Pakistan all-rounder Mohammad Nawaz has been sanctioned by the International Cricket Council after testing positive for Carboxy-THC, a cannabis-related substance, during the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.

The 32-year-old provided the positive sample following Pakistan’s match against the Netherlands in Colombo on February 7, 2026.

What is Carboxy-THC?

Carboxy-THC is a metabolite produced when the body processes THC—the main psychoactive compound found in cannabis. Under the ICC Anti-Doping Code, it is classified as a “Substance of Abuse.”

Nawaz admitted the anti-doping violation. However, the ICC accepted that the substance had been used outside competition and in circumstances unrelated to sporting performance.

That distinction played an important role in determining the length of his suspension.

Three-Month Suspension Can Be Reduced

The ICC handed Nawaz a three-month period of ineligibility, backdated to May 1, 2026—the date on which he voluntarily began serving a provisional suspension.

The sanction can be reduced to one month if Nawaz completes an approved substance-abuse treatment programme to the ICC’s satisfaction.

By the time the decision was announced, he had already spent approximately two and a half months under provisional suspension. After accepting the sanction and committing to rehabilitation, his provisional suspension was lifted.

If he successfully completes the treatment programme, he will not be required to serve any further period of ineligibility.

World Cup Records Disqualified

The ICC also confirmed that Nawaz’s individual records from the February 7 match against the Netherlands—and subsequent matches played before May 1—have been disqualified under its Anti-Doping Code.

Nawaz appeared in all seven of Pakistan’s matches during the 2026 Men’s T20 World Cup. Pakistan progressed to the Super Eights before being eliminated. Across the tournament, Nawaz originally recorded 15 runs and seven wickets.

The case highlights how cricket’s anti-doping regulations treat cannabis-related substances. Although the ICC accepted that Nawaz’s use was unrelated to improving his sporting performance, the positive test still constituted a violation and resulted in formal consequences.

300 Couriers, 405 Flights: Inside the Alleged India–Thailand Hydroponic Cannabis Network

Nearly 300 carriers, 405 flight bookings and more than ₹1 crore allegedly spent on air travel—these are not figures from a crime thriller. They form part of an investigation by Telangana’s EAGLE Force into a suspected international hydroponic cannabis-smuggling network operating between Thailand and India.

The case reportedly connects cannabis cultivation in Thailand, couriers travelling through several Indian airports, hawala transactions and even a proposed ₹20–30 crore nightclub in Hyderabad.

The Airport Seizure That Opened the Case

The investigation began after Hyderabad Customs intercepted Mohsin Bahadurbhai Sodha at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport on April 7, 2026. Officials reportedly recovered approximately 13.2 kilograms of hydroponic cannabis from him.

Following surveillance, EAGLE Force officers arrested Prajapti Harshad Mansukhbhai and Sandeep Jaiprakash Vaswani, also known as Rahul Jain, near BHEL Junction in Ramachandrapuram. Another 12.739 kilograms of hydroponic cannabis was allegedly seized during that operation.

The arrests gradually led investigators towards what they described as a much larger network extending across India and Thailand.

How the Alleged Network Operated

According to EAGLE Force Director Sandeep Shandilya, investigators identified around 40 people allegedly connected with the operation.

Police named Mumbai-based brothers Hemang Pramod Keluskar and Sudhanshu Pramod Keluskar as the suspected organisers. Authorities allege that they established cannabis cultivation and procurement links in Thailand in 2023 before developing a distribution network covering Telangana, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh and other states.

The carriers were allegedly recruited from different parts of India, particularly Gujarat and Telangana. Police say their flights and accommodation in Pattaya were arranged before they returned through airports such as Hyderabad, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Surat and Kolkata.

The investigation reportedly uncovered 405 flight bookings connected with the suspected network, with spending on air travel exceeding ₹1 crore. Officials believe nearly 300 carriers may have been used, although the full scale of the operation is still being established.

Cannabis Cultivation in Thailand

The group allegedly entered Thailand’s cannabis business under the appearance of legitimate medicinal and commercial activity.

Investigators claim the network leased a cultivation chamber capable of growing 144 cannabis plants per cycle under a five-year agreement. Cannabis cultivated or procured in Thailand was then allegedly transported to India and sold as premium hydroponic cannabis, often called “OG weed.”

Hydroponic cannabis is grown without traditional soil, generally using nutrient-rich water in a controlled environment. The term describes the cultivation method—it does not create a separate legal category for the substance in India.

According to police, the product was supplied to affluent customers, party circles and students in multiple Indian cities.

The Hawala Trail

Money appears to be another major part of the investigation.

Police allege that proceeds from cannabis sales were transferred through hawala channels and used to finance cultivation, travel, logistics and future consignments. Evidence examined during the investigation reportedly showed transfers exceeding 56 lakh Thai baht into accounts linked with cannabis-cultivation businesses.

Authorities are also examining possible connections between people associated with the network and organised-crime figures in Mumbai. These links remain allegations under investigation.

A ₹30 Crore Nightclub Plan in Hyderabad

Perhaps the most unexpected part of the case is a proposed nightclub in Kokapet, one of Hyderabad’s rapidly developing upscale areas.

Investigators allege that members of the network planned to invest between ₹20 crore and ₹30 crore in a nightclub inspired by Pattaya’s Jalwa Club. The accused reportedly visited Hyderabad in April 2026 and examined a potential location shortly before a major cannabis consignment entered the city.

Whether the proposed club was directly connected to the alleged trafficking operation remains a subject of investigation.

The Investigation Is Not Over

The EAGLE Force continues to search for additional associates, trace financial transactions and determine the true size of the alleged network.

The case also shows how cross-border cannabis operations can combine international travel, cultivation businesses, informal payment systems and urban distribution networks. However, every claim against the named individuals remains an allegation unless proven in court.

Did Ancient Indians Use Hemp at the Ellora Caves? The Truth Behind a 1,500-Year-Old Building Secret

When people hear the word cannabis, they usually think of medicine, rituals, or recreation. But at the Ellora Caves in Maharashtra, hemp appears to have served a completely different purpose: construction.

Researchers studying plaster from Buddhist Cave 12 identified plant material linked to Cannabis sativa. The hemp was likely mixed into ancient earthen plaster as a natural reinforcing fiber.

Why Would Ancient Builders Add Hemp?

Hemp fibres are strong, lightweight, and flexible. Researchers believe they may have helped the plaster bind better, reduce cracking, and survive environmental damage for a longer period.

Some reports also suggest that hemp may have made the plaster less attractive to insects. However, such benefits should be treated as scientific possibilities rather than fully proven facts.

Did Hemp Preserve Ellora for 1,500 Years?

Not by itself.

The survival of Ellora’s artwork and plaster depended on many factors, including skilled craftsmanship, rock-cut architecture, binders, local climate, and the protected cave environment.

Hemp may have been one useful ingredient, but it was not the only reason the caves survived.

It is also important to avoid viral claims stating that the ancient plaster definitely contained exactly 10% hemp. Published research confirms the presence of cannabis material, but the precise percentage is not firmly established.

Ancient India Was Already Building Sustainably

What makes this discovery remarkable is not just the use of hemp. It shows that ancient Indian builders understood how natural materials could improve construction centuries before “sustainable architecture” became a global trend.

The Ellora Caves are famous for their sculptures and massive rock-cut temples. Yet one of their most interesting secrets may be hidden in something much less visible: the plaster holding parts of their history together.

Sometimes, ancient innovation is not carved into stone. It is mixed quietly into the walls.
