The great thing about Bora Bora is that the weather is constant all year round, so you should not need to overpack with too many clothes. No one wants to lug around heavy bags on what’s supposed to be a relaxing trip.

Bora Bora resides in the middle of the South Pacific, and while there are shops and stores on the main island, hefty price tags accompany essential items. Bora Bora is the island of luxury where burgers can cost $25+ (USD) and $20+ for drinks. You’ll want to bring plenty of sunscreens and perhaps a bottle of liquor so that you can save money to buy souvenirs or exotic pearls to solidify a memorable dream vacation.

We have visited the island of Bora Bora four times, and each time we go, we use this helpful packing list to ensure we have everything covered. Paradise awaits, so let’s get packing!

> Sunscreen / Sunburn Care

Bora Bora is a tropical island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, and due to its proximity to the equator, the sun’s rays can be very intense all year round. You’ll need to apply sun protection more frequently, so bring plenty! We like Banana Boat Sport and Neutrogena Spray because they’re water and sweat-resistant. We also carry stronger but lighter sunscreen like this one for our faces. Don’t forget SPF chapstick and some cream like aloe vera to soothe the skin when you get burned.

> Bug Spray

Let’s face it. This tropical island has tropical bugs. You’ll want an insect repellent spray or wipes with DEET to protect yourself from mosquitos and other insects.

> Mask and Snorkel

You’re going to explore the lagoon, so you’ll want swimsuits, a good mask, and a snorkel to see fish, coral, and sharks! Most resorts have a pair for you to check out, although if you’re not up for swapping mouthpieces with all the hotel guests, you may want to bring your own snorkeling gear. There are many options now with the traditional style or the all-in-one new variations, with some even having a Go Pro attachment.

> Water Shoes

A MUST! Not every resort has a reef and sharp coral, but for those that do, you’ll be glad you have some protection for your feet other than flip flops. From personal experience, Jason stepped on a sea urchin and had a little spike stuck in his foot for months until it finally came. Not fun, so bring water shoes! I love these colorful jelly sandals, by the way.

> Big Brim, Fedora, or Trucker Hat

Plan on sitting in the sun and reading a book? Or maybe you want to look cute. Either way, a nice big brim hat or cotton beach hat can provide shade and keep your face turning red if you forget to apply your sunscreen. I also like this fedora and fun trucker hat.

> Sunglasses

Don’t forget to pack sunglasses, a week of squinting with all that sunshine will leave you with a bunch of wrinkles around your eyes. No one wants that. Even a cheap pair of sunglasses is a good idea on your packing list.

> Fun Plastic Rafts

When you’re not jumping off your overwater bungalow into the Bora Bora lagoon, maybe you want to float around on top of it and enjoy where you are. If that sounds like a plan, perhaps you should bring a cheap plastic raft. There’s the always favorite tube-style design, or maybe you’re more into laying on a mattress-shaped one. Although if you want to be the queen of the lagoon, then I suggest a colossal flamingo or unicorn raft.

> Small First Aid Kit

Better to be safe than sorry. Accidents, even if minor, can happen. Supplies and medicine can be hard to find on the island, and the prices at the drugstore in Vaitape can set you back a pretty penny just for some antacids. It’s a good idea to pack away a small first aid kit and hope you don’t need to use it.

> Reusable Water Bottle

Keep hydrated. That intense sun will have you sweating good. Some resorts will have water dispensers at breakfast or in the gym for you to fill up a reusable water bottle. You can save money instead of paying outrageous water prices at the hotel store.

> Power Adapter

The power outlets in Bora Bora use the two-round peg configuration. There’s usually one American-style outlet in the bathroom, but pick up one or two universal power adaptors, and you should be good.

> Underwater Camera / Go Pro

The vast blue lagoon in Bora Bora is what draws people to this incredible destination. Water is everywhere, and there are some fantastic things to be seen below the surface, so it’s a good idea to have an underwater camera to capture those moments. I recommend bringing a Go Pro if you want to shoot a video while kayaking or swimming. If you’re not brave enough to test the waterproof capabilities of your new phone, then may I suggest this.

> Collapsible Cooler / Day Bag

Suppose you plan on leaving your resort to explore the island via an excursion or just plain huffing it on foot. Get a light day bag or collapsible cooler for food and alcohol to picnic anywhere you want. We suggest bringing a few drinks and snacks and spending a few hours at Matira Beach.

> Small Flashlight

When that sun goes down, things get pretty dark. Yes, the hotels do an excellent job of uplighting palm trees, but if you’re walking around an unfamiliar place, it’s a good idea to pack a small flashlight. There are few streetlights and sidewalks on the island, so a flashlight can help oncoming cars see you better.

> Downtime Activities

Most of the fun activities on Bora Bora happen during the day and in the water. Depending on your budget and length of stay we recommend at least 2 or 3 excursions to get a feel for the island. Once those are done, you’ll want to have some downtime activities to pass the time. An adult coloring book, a deck of cards, and a few good books on my Kindle Fire are essential for a relaxing vacation.

> Light Rain Jacket

Depending on the weather, you might experience a tropical shower or two during your visit. Due to the tropical climate, the rain can come and go pretty fast, so that shouldn’t deter you from seeing the sights of the island or making the trek from your overwater bungalow to the resort restaurant. Stuff a light rain jacket in your bag in case you need to use it.

> Neck Pillow

A typical flight from Los Angeles, CA, to French Polynesia, is around 8 hours. If you’re taking a red-eye flight and want to get some decent sleep, get a good neck pillow so that you’re rested and ready to go when you arrive. And for complete comfort, one of these and one of these would be nice too.

> Good Attitude

Yes, you’re probably paying a large sum to visit, but don’t forget to pack a good attitude. Tourism is the primary industry in Bora Bora. As you can imagine, thousands of people visit this tiny island annually, yet there are only a handful of resorts. The island lifestyle is slower-paced, but the locals and resort staff will do their best to accommodate all your needs. Be gracious and treat them with respect; they will go out of their way to care for you.

Have you seen photos of overwater bungalows or heard someone talk about their honeymoon in Tahiti? If you’re unfamiliar with the Pacific, you may be asking yourself, where is Tahiti? Well, here’s the answer to that question.

Tahiti is in the South Pacific

Tahiti is located in the middle of the South Pacific Ocean, about halfway between the United States and Australia, in French Polynesia. The island of Tahiti is in the same time zone as Hawaii and is roughly the same distance away from the equator but on the southern side of it.

Tahiti is easily accessible from North America, South America, New Zealand, Australia, and Asia. Most of French Polynesia comprises of ocean and lagoons as the 118 islands and atolls only have approximately 1,600 square miles of land mass between them.

French Polynesia includes multiple island groups, or archipelagos called the Society islands, Tuamotu islands, Gambier islands, Austral islands, and the Marquesas islands. Tahiti is located within the chain of islands known as the Society islands. Because of its size, international airport, port, and population, it serves as the hub for the region.

The Society Islands

The Society Islands is home to black pearls and the island of Bora Bora, one of the most famous honeymoon destinations in the world. People from around the world come to stay in an overwater bungalow and for snorkeling or diving in its blue lagoon. However, just like Huahine, Raiatea, and Moorea, you can’t get there directly. Most travelers must fly into Faa’a International Airport (PPT) on Tahiti, which serves domestic and international flights from Paris, Tokyo, Easter Island, Cook Islands, and more.

For example, when we visit Bora Bora, we fly Air Tahiti Nui airlines, an 8-hour overnight flight from Los Angeles to Papeete. From the Tahiti airport, we fly the domestic carrier Air Tahiti airlines from Papeete to Bora Bora, which takes about 50 minutes. Optionally, you can take a Paul Gauguin cruise ship to explore several islands.

The Island of Tahiti

The island of Tahiti is divided into two parts: The more significant portion to the northwest is known as Tahiti Nui, while the smaller, southeastern peninsula is known as Tahiti Iti. Tahiti Nui contains three extinct volcanoes, Mount Orohena, the tallest in all of French Polynesia; Mount Aorai, known for incredible views; and the dramatic Le Diadème mountain peaks.

Given its tropical location, Tahiti and the surrounding islands are blessed with ideal weather all year round. French Polynesia has a local government but is an overseas collectivity of France and subject to the French rule of law. Most Tahitian people live on the northwestern side of the island in the capital city of Papeete, where there is a thriving downtown and local municipal market. Most people there speak Tahitian and French, as they are both official languages.

English is widely spoken and understood at most Bora Bora resorts, restaurants, and shops. However, learning a few common Tahitian words and phrases is appreciated by the locals, especially if you venture away from the tourist areas. Ready to learn the basics of how to speak Tahitian?

It can also be helpful to brush up on a few basic French phrases as French and Tahitian are the official languages of French Polynesia, and both are commonly used throughout the Society Islands. Tahitian is mainly spoken by islanders in their homes, while French is commonly used in schools and business.

The Tahitian language has a melodic intonation like a luring appeal and is very simple, with only 16 letters and 1,000 words. There are only five vowels (a, e, i, o, u) and eleven consonants (b, f, g, h, k, m, n, p, r, t, v), which makes learning the language very easy. An apostrophe indicates a short pause, and most vowels are pronounced.

Jessica and I spent our honeymoon here and have since revisited it on several occasions. From the luxury overwater bungalows to the stunning views of Mt. Otemanu and the most amazing sunsets, this resort holds a special place in our hearts.

Since our first visit, the resort has only improved its offerings and experiences. One of the highlights of the Sofitel Private Island is their Romantic Dinner with Tahitian music and dancing. However, there are lesser-known options to enhance your stay, but the only caveat is that you need to ask. If you think it, the staff can probably do it. Want a private dinner on the sand, then sure, why not.

Jessica and I enjoyed a private ONLY YOU dinner inside our luxury overwater bungalow with champagne and incredible food for this trip. Our tasting menu featured multiple courses of fresh fish, meat, cheeses, and dessert, each individually brought to our room and presented to us by a friendly staff member. The service was impeccable, and there was no rush as we sipped champagne and talked about our favorite part of the day, swimming with sharks and rays.

As you may know or have come to find out, everything in Bora Bora is expensive. From food, materials, clothes, the list goes on. If it’s not local to French Polynesia, then it’s probably imported. That’s why we were very excited to learn about Le Club Accor Hotels program. With a free membership, you get access to several soft benefits such as room upgrades, extended checkout, and complimentary internet that can be used at any of the Accor properties around the world, which includes the Sofitel.

We found that the best bang for your buck is the MyResorts Glass offer. Pre-pay a flat rate, in our case $48 USD, and receive unlimited soft drinks during the day and selected alcoholic beverages during a limited happy hour (2 hours). This is an excellent deal because individual drinks cost up to $10 to $20 a piece!

Without breaking the bank, you can feel like a million bucks with dedicated check-in counters, priority boarding, and a private business lounge before takeoff. Such add-ons aren’t as bad as you imagine starting at $60.

Jessica and I were excited to experience some of these amenities firsthand. While we didn’t have the Priority Pass, we watched several happy newlyweds speed to the front check-in counters while we waited in the long line with those who didn’t. We got the Lounge Pass, which was handed to us like a golden ticket (but it was blue) by the ATN staff member who checked us into the flight. With smiles on our faces, we proceeded promptly upstairs.

The Air Tahiti Nui Lounge is on the 6th floor of the Tom Bradley international terminal at LAX. Once the attendant greets you, you’re free to roam and enjoy endless snacks and drinks. It almost doesn’t feel like you’re at the airport as it’s tranquil. There is free Wifi, clean private bathrooms, and enough space to relax before the 8-hour flight to Papeete.

To make this travel experience memorable, Jessica and I flew Poerava Business Class. A special treat with an enhanced level of comfort and service. Right when you get on board, you’re greeted with a Tahitian welcome and a glass of champagne or tropical cocktail. Although not yet in Bora Bora, our stress drifted away, and our vacation officially started.

Our flight was an overnight adventure, so the extra room and additional reclining seats were appreciated while trying to rest. But before bed, we were treated to a light dinner, dessert, and a healthy drink menu.

Air Tahiti Nui airlines do a great job of making you feel like you’re already in French Polynesia as soon as you step on board. The cabin colors, the crew uniforms, the Tahitian music, the smell of the Tiare flower, it’s a beautiful experience and one that we keep choosing to fly with every time we go to Tahiti.

What we appreciate about Air Tahiti Nui is that they continue striving for better. We missed the inaugural flight, but starting November 2018; they are introducing the new Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner to its fleet of planes that offer daily non-stop flights to Tahiti from Los Angeles. The specs on these new planes look to provide even more comfort and style. We can’t wait to experience them next time!

For those who can afford it, Bora Bora real estate is the pinnacle of wealth. If you dream of owning a piece of property for sale in Bora Bora, you’ll need to put in the time, as the real estate process in French Polynesia is quite difficult to navigate. However, the reward for such efforts would be to own a piece of the most beautiful island in the world.

Tips for Buying Property in Bora Bora:

1. Understand the process.

To own Bora Bora real estate, each foreign investment requires an authorization permit (issued by a “notary”) from the government of French Polynesia. In most cases, the government is more likely to approve an investment if the project is business related and creates good employment possibilities for locals. The most obvious example of this is a large hotel or resort.

Smaller projects and private investments undergo a much more intense scrutiny process because most of them will never create jobs or add to the local economy. These projects are notoriously difficult to obtain the necessary authorization permits, as it often seems each project is based on a different set of criteria

2. Visit before you buy.

A French Polynesia tourist visa is not required for citizens of the United States of America for a stay of up to 90 days. All travelers will need a passport valid for at least 90 days following their departure date from French Polynesia. It is highly recommended that you visit for an extended period and rent a house to get a feel for the small island lifestyle before blindly purchasing a property.

Taking possession of a Visa longer than 90 days requires extensive background checks and time. Many foreign property owners choose to live in Bora Bora for a few weeks or months each year and rent out their properties while they’re off the island.

3. Work with a local expert.

Often, Polynesian land title is hard to clear because there are many owners even for a small parcel of land. To clear a property for sale, all owners must give their permission, and many times, this is a nearly impossible feat. Also, Polynesian families are very attached to the land of their ancestors for cultural reasons (understandably) and many times have no interest in selling in the first place. Do your research on finding a local brokerage company to work with. Owning property in Bora Bora is very complex, and you’ll want to work with a reputable real estate agency.

4. Bank on your relationships.

Since Bora Bora is such a remote island, you’ll need help with just about everything you do, and your options will be limited. Consider working closely with a large international bank or real estate company with connections in French Polynesia to build or finance your perfect home.

5. Document everything.

The high-end real estate market is more scrutinized today. Financial documentation is critical. You’ll want to show the banks you have the funds to purchase a property, but as it can take months or years to navigate the process in French Polynesia, good records allow you to stay organized.

6. Hire smart, reliable advisers.

Buying property for businesses such as hotels and bed and breakfasts is a little easier because it will help the local economy by creating jobs. Bora Bora beach properties that do not create jobs have more difficulties navigating the Tahitian entitlement process.

All communication with the proper government officials associated with the real estate authorization permit process is conducted in French. It is recommended that those who don’t have a fluent understanding of the language utilize the services of a translator.

7. Don’t forget about title insurance.

You need to get title insurance to protect against any problems that might have been forgotten about. You’ll also want to make sure you have a chance to look at the exceptions page of the title insurance process before closing time.

8. Consider the maintenance.

Bora Bora has a tropical climate with humidity, rain, and intense sun that can wreak havoc on poorly maintained properties. You’ll need a hefty operating budget to import materials and hire a caretaker to oversee your property while you are away.

9. Know what to expect with condominiums.

Condos can be a good way to take ownership since you can share the cost of maintenance with other property owners. Often the homeowners association will take care of landscaping, oversee security, and handle general upkeep.

10. There’s room to negotiate.

Many properties in Bora Bora have been on the market for a very long time, and there’s room to negotiate. At one time, the Four Seasons Hotel offered 15 exclusive private residences for sale, but the didn’t have luck selling them after several years. Working with a well-established business may be an easier way to acquire real estate in Bora Bora.

There’s more to Bora Bora than overwater bungalows and luxury resorts. There are bike, scooter, and car rentals available to explore this beautiful island at your own pace. Most resorts even have daily boat service to Vaitape for you to shop at the local markets.

Transportation is typically covered when staying at the major resorts, getting you to and from the Airport. Bora Bora is made up of several smaller islands (motus), making transportation by boat necessary. Most big resorts such as the Four Seasons, St Regis, Le Meridien, InterContinental Thalasso, Conrad, and Pearl Beach are located on the outer islands. They require a boat transfer to the main island.

If you’re staying at the larger resorts, there is usually a hotel store and multi restaurants on-site, making it so that you don’t need to leave the property. However, if you like a little adventure or want to explore the island, check with the hotel concierge. Some hotels have daily boat service to Vaitape, or if you happen to be staying on the main island, the staff can arrange a taxi for you.

The InterContinental Thalasso and the Sofitel Private Island are two resorts with sister properties on the main island. Upon request or at set schedules, a boat shuttle will take you to the sister resorts free of charge. This is an excellent option if you plan on exploring the island or if you plan on saving money buying food and drinks outside of the resorts.

Rent a Bike, Scooter, or Car

There are two Avis Rental companies on the island, one in Vaitape just across from the marina and the other near Matira Point. Some other places rent bikes and scooters, such as near the Hotel Maitai Polynesia or from one of the locals.

Bora Bora has one main road that circles the island. A normal drive takes 45 minutes, although we often stop several times along the way to take pictures of Mount Otemanu or the lagoon. The road is paved and mostly flat, so if you are looking for something more physical, a bike ride can take 1 to 2 hours.

Getting to Dinner Outside the Resort

If you plan on dining at local establishments such as Bloody Mary’s or the Bora Bora Yacht Club, then let the hotel concierge know. They will call the restaurant for you to make a reservation. If the resort is on the outer motu, then a boat ride to the hotel base on the main island will be required. From there you will take a car taxi. The restaurants provide free taxi accommodations to and from your resort.
