Confession: How this book came to be in my at-home to-read paperback pile, I don’t recall. I’m not a girly girl who loves stories of fashion and makeup and Pinterest boards. And contemporary romance is usually too romancy for me. Yet, when it came time to choose the next book from my toppling to-read pile, this is the one I chose.

I didn’t have high hopes–I was a bit like Silas in the beginning as I wanted substance not sparkle. Yet, once I read the first page, I hurried to the next, and the next, and I kept flipping pages as I got to know Molly and Silas and saw glimpses into each of their hearts and heartbreaks of the very fleshed-out characters. Molly was far more relatable than I would have imagined.

I love the concept of The Bridge, and that helped draw me into the story.

I also really appreciated the romance aspect of the story. It wasn’t gush at first sight, rather the love grew slowly, realistically.

The one minor issue I had was there was a bit of a muddling middle where the story was easier to put down, but once I got past that, I put aside all chores so I could finish the book.

So bravo, Nicole Deese, for winning over this non-girly-girl to Molly’s side. Now I’m off to purchase the brother’s story…

For me, that was last week when The Mosaic Collection authors gathered in person for the first time ever! Yes, I’d previously met Stacy Monson, Angela Meyer, and Lorna Seilstad, but the rest (Sara Davison, Deb Elkink, Eleanor Bertin, Johnnie Alexander, Candace West) I met face to face for the first time rather than on Zoom. Even so, when each person walked into the grand lobby of the resort we were staying at, I felt as if I were greeting long-time friends.

We gathered at the beautiful Cliffs at Long Creek resort just south of Branson, Missouri in the breathtaking Ozarks. Three 2-bedroom units were shared among us, with my unit (shared with Stacy) being the gathering hub.

We spent the week fellowshipping, praying, listening, laughing, crying, eating, singing. Some of us wrote, others brainstormed, some read, others relaxed. Dinner at Hook & Ladder Pizza was delicious (and fun! See image below.) We all loved seeing Queen Esther at Sight & Sound Theatre. If you’re ever in Branson, Missouri or Lancaster, PA, you’ll definitely want to make time for their show. You will be in awe!

Needless to say, fun was had by all and unforgettable memories were created.

Unfortunately, Chautona Havig and Milla Holt weren’t with us this year, but perhaps they will join us for the second annual Mosaic retreat that’s already in the works.

I don’t typically read war fiction, but as Tosca Lee is a gifted storyteller, I decided to give this book a try, and I’m glad I did.

The Long March Home was certainly not an easy read. While the authors didn’t describe the gruesomeness of war in full detail, they also did not gloss it over. It makes you wonder how anyone survives and is a true testament to our will to live.

The well-drawn characters carried this story along and kept you turning pages. You rooted for them and cried for them and wondered how they would have the strength to make it one more day. It’s a great reminder of what those who’ve fought for freedom have truly sacrificed.

I’d highly recommend this book to not only readers of historical fiction, but to anyone who appreciates a well-told story.
