Jeffry Slayter has had an amazing life since stepping out as a change maker. He was a pleasure to interview and for all to see how his view of life reflects all change makers journeys.

This was something he knew was part of the path. Before he knew it he was consulting, speaking at seminar after seminar and eventually, the big stages of the world! He even shared the stage with some of his biggest inspirations and thought leaders like Richard Branson, Dr. Demartini, Robert Kiyosaki and Tony Robbins. Something he only ever dreamed to do!

From here, he successfully built a multimillion-dollar corporate training company (Jeff and Kane Pty Ltd), working with Fortune 500 companies as a trusted advisor to help them innovate and get results. He was back on his feet building other businesses and investment opportunities in the background with like-minded people he had met during his speaking engagements, and from his incredible select high net-worth clients.

Depression has become an illness. Something that you must go to the doctor to solve.

The Google definition of depression is:- A depressive disorder is not a passing blue mood but rather persistent feelings of sadness and worthlessness and a lack of desire to engage in formerly pleasurable activities. A complex mind/body illness, depression can be treated with drugs and/or therapy.

As most who suffer depression know taking anti depressants doesn’t solve the issue it only places a blanket on the issue and numbs out feelings. This observation been taken from feedback from hundreds of sufferers. (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4172306/) . Irving Kirsch Harvard professor writes of the “The serotonin myth” in a peer reviewed paper taken from many clinical trials. How it’s not serotonin that affects depression at all.

The truth is every human behavior has a benefit even if that benefit seems ridiculous to most people. Depression and anxiety are the result of perfecting a state that we all use, all of the time. Everyone feels down at some time and some feel down a lot of the time. However as any depression suffer will testify it can’t and doesn’t last ALL of the time. All sufferers go in and out of depression. The reason is simple. Depression suffers have perfected that way of feeling and use it as a place of withdrawing from the world and giving self comfort. Once this pattern has begun then it becomes very difficult to withdraw from this method of dealing with issues that arise in life.

One of the largest challenges for depression sufferers is the inclination to “defend” their depression. As it meets a lot of their needs which others will not or can not meet they defend that they are “sick,” further keeping them trapped into a cycle of despair and anger which all depression suffers go through.

The solution is to awaken to this reality and take control over the pattern by recognizing it as a pattern of behavior, something that is actually in their control. Depression can seem unsolvable and unmanageable and therefore people are stuck with it. You can take control of it and recognize that whilst you may experience depression it is not the best way to comfort yourself. To recognize how beautiful you are and to move away from that internal voice which tells you the opposite is the solution. This involves awakening to who you really are. A beautiful soul who can think, feel and make a contribution to the world. That you have something of value to give and that you are not a victim to it.

The way you think and feel controls the physiology of your body and the interconnection has become mainstream medicine (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1456909/) it therefore is ludicrous that the connection as not been made when it comes to psychology and medical treatment of depression. Whilst drugs may have a stabilizing effect they are not designed to cure. To be free takes self awareness and mental stability, all of which mindfulness and spiritual practices can give. Begin your practices with learning to meditate and become self aware. Listening to and observing the internal dialogue you use to speak to yourself and control your day combining this with Tai Chi or Qigong practices daily to move the Chi energy within your body will begin your Path to freedom.

To move away from dependence on the old way of being takes time and a good teacher. However the old paradigm of using drugs to maintain ones mental state will eventually disappear as awareness grows that the old way of dealing with the challenges of life do not work and that we can find a new path to enable not only ourselves to become more powerful and contribute to the world but many others as well by our example of overcoming what seems to have become normality for a large percentage of the world today.

Exploring the alternative is well worth the effort.

“We all face death. Few face life”

Its easy to see once you are awake the futile efforts of the many who run their lives in unconscious delusion and keep getting the same results over and over again. Equally its also easy to see the upward climb of those who align with the divine nature that exists in the universe and how their lives are rewarded for doing so.

That road is becoming more popular and in fact its becoming obligatory. We all can see that our planet is sick if not dying. We can all see that our political system fails to deliver a healthy food or medical system that is not profit driven. So a moment of awareness leads to one conclusion. There must be more than accepting the status quo.

Once that awareness dawns as we begin the path its obvious that to change the world I must be the change to paraphrase Ghandi. So my own journey to wake up was one that caused turmoil and at times the progress was slow but its a bit like peeling an onion. Once you accept that there is going to be times you wish you had stayed asleep, then you can keep moving forward. The alternative is to accept the egos solution which is what got us into trouble in the first place. So at an individual level what do you need to do to awaken?

The Tao Te Ching has some advice:-

Tao exists in one’s own true self.

It cannot be found outside of one’s true nature.

Hence, there is no need to leave the house to take journey in order to know the world.

Your life can be divided into five areas. Health, wealth, your work or business, your relationships and the one with yourself. Let me pose the question in each of these. Where can you be better? Second question would be. Do you have all the skills necessary in each of those areas to be better? No? Then you need to acquire them.

If you spend too much and cant save find someone to help you with the skills and the behavioral change necessary to make it happen. Knowledge is one thing but actioning it, is another. We all know too much chocolate is a bad thing but if you are overweight you know stopping is the real issue. That’s where knowledge about the ego comes in. If you don’t know what it is, find out. It is the major reason we eat too much, spend too much, cant get on with other people and don’t really know or love ourselves.

Many lack the awareness which leads to lack of will power to overcome the ego and all its forms. It is only though wanting the change from be asleep that awareness slowly arises. its like the rising of anew day as it begins it gradually gets brighter. Awareness comes tot hose who are prepared to be different then test that difference against how the majority are living. Which works better which makes me happier and more peaceful? As Buddha said we must all find our own way be testing what works for us individually. He didn’t say follow me he said find your own way.

Sometimes its all too easy to follow another than go down the road less travelled. Initially you will need to find a master a teacher or guru to assist you in the right direction but after the apprenticeship you must strike out on your own and lead the way yourself. That is the road to mastery, awakening and enlightenment. No one else can take you down that road. Only you know the road you must travel.

Mastering of ourselves leads to us changing the world. Once we are all masters of ourselves then we will all want change in the world. The change has to begin with us. Start working on yourself today. This is the essence of selfless action spoken of in the Bhagavad Gita.

Further, having regard to thy own duty, thou shouldst not waver, for there is nothing higher …….. than a righteous war.

This is one war we all need to win.

“Should a person do good, let him do it again and again. Let him find pleasure therein, for blissful is the accumulation of good.” The Buddha

The accumulation of good karma was one of the primary methods Buddha advocated for reaching enlightenment.

Many seek to find this place where all be at peace and life is bliss. The reality is that enlightenment as Lao Tzu said is “Before enlightenment chopping wood , carry water. After enlightenment chopping wood, carrying water.”

Attempting to reach enlightenment or freedom before preparatory work is like climbing Mount Everest with a cart full of rocks behind you. To shed the negative deeds is dumping the rocks one by one. Every small thought and deed that you do which adds positivity to the universe sheds a rock. Once you have completed enough, a door
will open. That is the essence of Buddha’s eight fold path. At its core it is the accumulation of positive energy or karma.

Doing the eight fold path for the purpose of shedding karma and gaining

enlightenment is adding rocks. It’s not just the big things like traveling to Nigeria and working in an orphanage, as commendable as that is. It’s how you speak to your wife or husband, it’s how grumpy you can get after a late night. How well you treat your customers and how much their happiness is yours. As Rumi said “Your task is not to seek for love, but merely to seek and find all the barriers within yourself that you have built against it.” Apply that to your business and your life and watch them grow.

Once you master these small deeds you will feel a shift occurs. Life becomes simple and drama ceases, you have reached the point of balance where the good deed is who you are and it is effortless. It doesn’t mean you have become a martyr and are running around helping everyone you find. If that is you, best to shine the light of truth on it to see you are actually doing it for yourself and not others. However what you will experience if you are diligent is that good karma follows and attracts good karma.

Karma accumulates to those who follow this Path. This is not a religious belief or a new age belief. It is an observable law of behavior. Watch those that carry it out correctly and you will see their lives enriched.

If you begin to practice this you will see the benefit in your business, your health, your wealth and your life.

Buddha preached giving up everything to reach awakening, Jesus said “If you cling to your life, you will lose it; but if you give up your life for me, you will find it.” The path to self realization is paved with shedding things but what does it really mean?

The ascetics tried giving up everything but Buddha saw that giving up everything wasn’t the way to self realization. It only prevented it. So he discovered it requires balance.

The ego is concerned with gaining things so when we let go we bring a change in perception of what is important. We allow what really matters to arise for us in day to day perception of what we are doing.

Letting go has a variety of meanings. It can mean letting go of something hurtful someone has said to you. It can mean letting a friend move out of your life when the friendship has changed. It can mean letting go of a dream when it becomes obvious that it is not going to happen. It can mean letting go in the death of a loved one and ultimately letting go of everything upon our own death. Letting go is part of life and so must be mastered. So much pain and anguish is generated in the desire to hold onto things. Whereas the natural way is to let go.

So why do people hold onto things when they must let go? The answer is always fear.

Fear that it will be taken away when in actuality it will be anyway. Fear that their child will hurt themselves so they mollycoddle them into being helpless. Fear that they will lose money in the stock market so they keep it in the bank and stay poor. Fear that their loved one will not love them anymore and leave, so they get smothered by them and do so anyway. Holding on has a way of coming back to bite you.

Letting go of outcome though has a way of returning to you what you desire. Ever had the experience of wanting something but not pushing or trying to make it happen and somehow it did? Some people call it flow. It’s when you don’t hold on, you don’t grasp. You just set your intention then let go. It’s interesting because in my own experience the more you let go of the more freedom you find and the less there is a “me” to claim ownership of things.

In my experience the more you release, the more you find that the “you” that thought you had to have it, didn’t really need it anyway. The more you let go of what you think you need, the more you find what was missing. Strange, how it works really. Stranger too that as you begin the process of letting go the more you will experience the fear and the need to want to hold on.

Just ignore it. It’s just your ego trying to stay alive. Let life be one big let go. It’s a lot more fun that way.

The nature of thought is it appears to be tied to intelligence. The reality is, it is not.

Many have intelligence but do not possess the wisdom to make good choices. Intelligence provides a mechanism to use apparent facts to draw inference and conclusions from tested conditions. Wisdom is the ability to think outside of preconditioned certainty. Many great advances have come from thinking outside conditioning. Einstein, Tesla and Elon Musk are examples.

This begs the question why? Buddha is quoted as saying “”What we are today comes from our thoughts of yesterday, and our present thoughts build our life of tomorrow. Our life is the creation of our mind.” These past events become the influences our thoughts and perceptions and hence our intelligence. It is obvious to the trained and conditioned mind that our thoughts appear to be ours but are not.

We have many random thoughts and it is a common experience that many do not fit with being ours. They do not accord with our values, our morals or our hearts desires. Often we are pulled by the winds of desire into situations and action we wish we did not do. There can be only one freedom that the enlightened mind would seek. That would be to find that which you do not have.

“I reached in experience the nirvana which is unborn, unrivalled, secure from attachment, undecaying and unstained. This condition is indeed reached by me which is deep, difficult to see, difficult to understand, tranquil, excellent, beyond the reach of mere logic, subtle, and to be realized only by the wise.” Buddha said this to point to what is missing in most of the world. We are so enamored with the mind and what it can do for us. However it is like an untrained child jumping form one activity to another never staying still. Always moving. Never still and uncluttered. It never has peace.

When we have peace there is a portion of our awareness that we call consciousness which reaches into a wisdom that is centered in clarity. This is what we do not possess and when we do reach for it, It provides startling advances. Einstein used this path to discover the General theory of Relativity. He did not use his intelligence but rather his awareness. His imagination not a mathematical calculation. He utilized wisdom.

This is available to you when you are prepared to unattach from your intelligent mind and align with the awareness that holds all wisdom and insight and can experience life outside of the pre conditioned past that we are all tied to.

This awareness is contained in a third person experience. It cannot be held within the vessel that does the thinking. Hence it must be sought outside of rational thought. It can only be found in outside through a meditation, carefully crafted to reach through the right path to it. There are many paths of false thought based constructs which will lead you astray.

Listening to those who have been there before is the way to transcend the false paths. These include many religions, western conservative thought and drugs. None of these will lead you to the awakening and clarity you seek. Heed the advice of masters in this area and seek one that exhibits the conditions of wisdom and not the words but the actions.

Take the time to find this path and you see why this is the ultimate path to follow.
