Navigating family dynamics during wedding planning is one of the biggest challenges couples face, but setting clear boundaries can reduce stress and keep your celebration feeling relaxed. Wedding planning burnout is avoidable – and your loved ones don’t have to be a source of frustration or exhaustion along the way.

From differing opinions on rituals and customs to advice on guest lists or decor, family involvement can be both a gift and a source of unexpected pressure. Learning how to manage expectations and define roles ensures everyone feels included while allowing you and your partner to maintain control over your wedding vision.

Our first piece of advice? Always prioritize what you and your partner truly want for your wedding. Next, use this guide to help you navigate family expectations with grace, find ways to involve them that feel authentic, and reduce unnecessary stress so you can focus on enjoying every moment of your big day.

Communicate Your Vision.

Share your theme, ideas, location, and ceremony details with your family as early as possible. Even if your plans don’t align with their expectations, they need to hear it directly from you rather than secondhand. Taking control of your narrative helps set the tone for a smoother planning process and ensures everyone hears your priorities from the start.

Outline the Wedding Plans.

Once your major decisions are finalized, your venue is booked, and the key details are set, share a clear outline of your wedding plans with your family. Presenting it as “This is the plan” makes it easier for them to accept, understand, and bring any questions directly to you.

Explain Non-Negotiables.

Many couples face challenges when taking a modern approach to traditions, incorporating or omitting religious elements, or choosing a path that feels unfamiliar to their families. It’s perfectly okay to be clear about your non-negotiables as the aspects of your wedding you’re not willing to compromise on.

Mindfully Include Them.

It’s reassuring for family to know that you want them to be part of your wedding and understand how you’d like them involved. You don’t have to participate in every family tradition, but finding meaningful ways to include your loved ones can help them feel valued and connected to your celebration. This might open the opportunity for a conversation on how they’d feel being included, and what might be most comfortable.

Ask For Input.

Sometimes, conflict stems from uncertainty, but giving your family a clear role can help prevent tension. Consider offering them specific ways to contribute, such as assisting with decor details or taking the lead on a pre- or post-wedding activity. Even if you’re seeking their advice, involving them in defined areas can ease pressure, make them feel valued, and keep boundaries intact.

Curate Your Ceremony.

From walking you down the aisle to giving a reading, singing, offering a blessing, or participating in a special ritual, there are countless ways to give your family members meaningful roles on your wedding day. Creating opportunities for them to contribute can make the ceremony feel more personal, inclusive, and memorable.

Invite Them to Give a Speech.

Including family doesn’t have to be limited to the ceremony. You might invite a parent or relative to prepare a speech, letting them know exactly when during the celebration it will be delivered. This kind of responsibility can feel like a meaningful honor, giving them a special way to contribute to your day.

Reserve Special Accommodations.

Many venues offer on-site lodging or have nearby accommodations. If that’s the case, consider which family members you’d like to have close to you and your partner. Keeping them nearby can create a more intimate experience, helping them feel connected to the celebration, enjoy special amenities, and share in that VIP treatment.

Organize Special Photo-Op Moments.

Plan ahead for when, where, and how long you’d like to take family photos. Coordinating with your planner or photographer can help ease any anxiety your family might have about capturing important moments. This approach ensures extended family, children, and other loved ones are included – and gives your parents the meaningful photo opportunities they may be hoping for.

Set Boundaries Around Wedding Planning Talk.

No matter the length of your engagement, set boundaries with family so you can enjoy their company without the constant wedding chatter. This helps alleviate tension and provides much-needed mental breaks.

One of our top tips for managing wedding-planning stress is to make sure you and your partner are on the same page, and to schedule nights where wedding talk is completely off-limits. It’s equally smart to apply this rule with family when needed.

Micro weddings have quickly become one of the most talked-about trends in modern wedding planning. With a smaller guest count and a more intentional approach to celebrating, micro weddings allow couples to focus on what matters most: meaningful moments, thoughtful details, and quality time with the people they love. It’s no surprise that Pittsburgh couples are embracing the micro wedding mindset as they plan their big day.

So what exactly is a micro wedding? Typically hosting fewer than 50 guests, a micro wedding sits comfortably between a full-scale wedding and more private celebrations, such as elopements or minimony-style ceremonies. Couples can still incorporate many traditional elements, like a ceremony, cocktail hour, dinner, and dancing, while enjoying the intimacy that comes with a smaller guest list.

With fewer people to host, couples often have more freedom in how they design their celebration and spend their budget. That might mean investing in a dream photographer, hosting a more elevated dining experience, booking a one-of-a-kind venue, or simply creating more space to slow down and savor the celebration with family and close friends.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-large wp-image-105709" src="https://d12cx0hjxyub1e.cloudfront.net/uploads/2026/03/What-Is-a-Micro-Wedding-And-Why-Pittsburgh-Couples-Are-Choosing-Them-Burgh-Brides-683x1024.png" alt="What Is a Micro Wedding?
Quick Facts About Micro Weddings:

Typically under 50 guests, often including immediate family and close friends

A more selective guest list (which may mean no plus-ones or children)

A strong focus on intimacy, connection, and shared experiences

Opportunities for elevated or immersive guest experiences

Can still be a destination wedding or a unique venue celebration

May cost less overall, allowing funds to stretch further

Allows for a more curated list of vendors

Greater flexibility with venues, ceremony styles, and activities

What Is a Micro Wedding?

A micro wedding is a smaller, more intimate wedding celebration that prioritizes connection and the guest experience. While the guest list is typically under 50 people, that doesn’t mean the celebration itself feels scaled down.

A smaller guest list can open the door to an entirely different kind of wedding experience – one with elevated details. Couples may choose to hire a private chef, treat guests to luxury experiences or thoughtful gifts, invest in their dream photographer, or host their celebration at a venue that might otherwise feel out of reach for a 200-person guest list.

Planning a micro wedding also allows couples to be more intentional about how they spend both their time and their budget. With fewer guests to greet and fewer moving parts throughout the day, there’s often more time for meaningful conversations, shared moments, and simply being present – and that’s the whole point! Instead of rushing through a receiving line, couples can fully enjoy the celebration alongside their closest family and friends, diving right into the festivities – and not forgetting to eat.

Why Are Micro Weddings Trending in Pittsburgh?

Micro weddings gained momentum during the COVID pandemic, when people across the wedding industry began turning toward smaller celebrations. In many cases, they realized these gatherings felt even more personal. That perspective has continued to shape how couples approach wedding planning, encouraging them to think more intentionally about the experience they want to create.

In Pittsburgh, micro weddings are especially fitting. The city is full of unique venues – from historic architecture and rooftop spaces to scenic overlooks and nearby nature escapes. We’ve curated a list of unique, non-traditional wedding venues for couples looking for that something different. And we’re lucky enough to have a city courthouse so stunning that couples regularly choose to exchange vows right in its stairwell. With so many distinctive spaces available and the best wedding vendors around, Pittsburgh is perfectly suited to host a truly memorable micro wedding

What Are the Benefits of Hosting a Micro Wedding?

One of the biggest advantages of hosting a micro wedding is its smaller scope in terms of guest count and, often, the overall budget. With fewer people attending, couples may need fewer invitations, fewer tables and chairs, less decor, and smaller catering quantities. That can naturally reduce certain costs and logistical considerations. Fewer rentals, less parking coordination, and fewer staffing needs can make planning feel more manageable overall.

At the same time, a micro wedding often gives couples more flexibility in how they allocate their budget. Instead of spreading resources across a large guest list, couples can invest in the elements that matter most to them. Think: splurging on the outfits, booking your dream photographer, hosting unique entertainment like live musicians or a live painter, or creating memorable guest experiences.

How Is a Micro Wedding Different From an Elopement or Minimony?

An elopement is typically the most private option. Often it involves just the couple, along with an officiant and sometimes a photographer. In Pittsburgh, couples even have the option of hosting self-uniting ceremonies, which means an officiant isn’t required. Elopements also tend to skip traditional receptions or large guest gatherings.

A minimony usually includes only a small handful of guests for a short ceremony, often followed by a simple dinner or small gathering afterward. Couples may keep things very minimal, perhaps ordering a bouquet and reserving a private dining space at a restaurant rather than planning a full wedding event.

A micro wedding sits comfortably between these options and a full-scale wedding. It still includes a small, intentional guest list, but couples often incorporate many traditional wedding elements such as a ceremony, reception, curated meal, and a team of expert wedding vendors – just on a more intimate scale.

Can I Still Book Traditional Wedding Vendors for a Micro Wedding?

Absolutely! Professional wedding vendors work with celebrations of all sizes, and many offer packages or flexible services that can accommodate smaller events. While a micro wedding doesn’t automatically mean every vendor will cost less, certain aspects of the celebration – like catering quantities, rental needs, or floral arrangements – may naturally scale down because of the smaller guest count.

We recommend you reach out to the vendors you love and share your vision – they’ll be able to let you know how their offerings can be tailored to fit your unique plans.

Let’s Plan Your Micro Wedding!

A micro wedding isn’t about doing less – it’s about focusing on what matters most and creating a wedding day that feels truly personal. Planning a micro wedding allows couples to prioritize their goals: how they want to spend both their time and their budget.

If you’ve started planning your wedding, chances are you’ve already Googled “average cost of a wedding” or “average cost of a wedding photographer/planner/florist/etc..” You probably felt one of two things: total sticker shock, or a false sense of security.

Here’s the truth: those “average” numbers rarely tell the whole story. Before you build your wedding budget around a national headline figure, let’s talk about why wedding cost averages can be misleading – and what you should focus on instead.

“Average” Includes Everything – and That’s the Problem

Most wedding cost reports pull from massive national surveys. That means they include:

Backyard weddings with 40 guests

Black tie ballroom affairs with 300 guests

Friday brunch celebrations

Saturday peak-season weddings

Destination weddings

Elopements

Rural venues

Luxury urban venues

This range of weddings is incredibly broad. If you’re planning a 175-guest formal September wedding in Pittsburgh, a survey that also includes 50-guest weekday micro-weddings and 400-guest luxury Manhattan events isn’t going to give you a tailored comparison.

An “average” doesn’t represent:

Your guest count

Your aesthetic

Your priorities

Your season

Your venue type

Instead, the “average” represents all weddings combined. And that makes it inherently non-specific.

Wedding Location Plays a Major Role in Pricing

A wedding in a major city is not priced the same as one in a suburb or rural area. If you want meaningful numbers, look locally.

Cost of living, the demand of your vendors and their pricing structures, the cost of labor, insurance requirements, and the cost of goods vary dramatically from city to city.

National averages flatten those differences into one big number. But weddings are hyper-local. What’s “average” in Manhattan might be considered like a luxury budget in Western Pennsylvania, while what’s typical in a smaller Midwest market may not cover the baseline costs of a major metro area.

Guest Count Is a Massive Cost Driver

Here’s something averages don’t tell you clearly enough: guest count impacts almost everything.

More guests typically mean:

More catering

More rentals

More florals

More stationery and printing and mailing costs

Larger venue requirements

More staffing

Bigger transportation needs

A 90-guest wedding and a 220-guest wedding are truly not comparable, yet they’re often grouped together in the same data sets. That’s why two couples in the same city, working with vendors at similar price points, can end up with dramatically different total budgets.

They’re hosting different-sized celebrations with different needs and a different overall scale.

Survey Methodology Matters (A Lot)

Not all wedding surveys are created equal.

Some key questions to consider:

Who was surveyed? (Luxury couples? All couples? Platform users only?)

How were responses collected?

Was there an incentive?

Were incomplete budgets included?

Were vendor discounts factored in?

Were DIY costs counted?

Were multi-day celebrations included?

Even the definition of “wedding cost” can vary. Some surveys include the rehearsal dinner, engagement ring, and honeymoon, while others focus only on the wedding day itself. Without understanding the methodology, that “average” number becomes more of a headline than a helpful planning tool.

“Average” Doesn’t Reflect Your Wedding Priorities

One couple may spend:

$12,000 on catering

$2,000 on florals

$3,000 on photography

While another may prioritize:

$8,000 on photography

$6,000 on florals

$9,000 on entertainment

Both weddings could cost roughly the same overall, but their vendor spending would look completely different. There is no universal “normal” allocation of funds. Your values, priorities, and vision naturally shape how your budget is distributed.

Averages Ignore the Mid Range (and Extremes Can Skew the Data)

By definition, averages are raised by very high-end weddings and pulled down by ultra-minimal ones.

A handful of six-figure celebrations can dramatically increase a national number. At the same time, courthouse ceremonies and small backyard weddings pull it lower.

What couples really need to understand is the realistic range within their local market – not a single blended figure.

What You Should Ask Instead

Instead of asking, “What’s the average cost of a wedding?” try asking:

What do weddings similar to mine cost in my city?

What does my guest count realistically require?

What vendors align with my priorities?

What is the price range for the wedding professionals (photographers, caterers, planners, etc.) at the level of quality I’m hoping for?

Talk to local vendors. Ask for starting prices or package details. Be transparent about your vision and guest count. Build your budget based on your real-world plans – not a national headline.

Wedding Averages Aren’t Wrong. They’re Just Incomplete

They offer broad snapshots of an incredibly diverse industry. While averages can provide an extremely general sense of scale, they shouldn’t be the sole foundation of your wedding budget.

Your wedding isn’t “average”… and your budget shouldn’t be built on one either.

Understand the Value & Cost of Film Photography

As a couple, it’s important to ask why you want to incorporate film photography into your wedding day. This step can help you determine the personal, sentimental, or practical value of the process, deciding if it’s ultimately worth the price. Is it a nostalgic nod to your grandparents’ wedding? Do you appreciate the chemical and analog elements that make film so unique in a digital world? Or are you hoping to capture film imagery for trendy Instagram-worthy moments?

“Film is expensive,” explains Anne Troxel, “especially video styles like Super-8! There are plenty of invisible expenses. There are upfront costs like the film, the camera, and an external light meter. The film then has to be shipped, processed in a chemical bath, and finally, scanned. This process is extremely manual, time-consuming, and specialized.”

Anne continues, “The difference between partnering with a mid-level lab versus an incredible lab will be obvious in the final result, and those great labs charge their value. To get scans large enough to print comparably to digital, expect to pay an extra premium. Film adds the challenge of carrying additional cameras, film rolls, labels, and potentially more lenses and accessories. Loading the film is a manual process that takes more than a moment. When you’re looking at a busy wedding day timeline, one of the best solutions from a photographer’s perspective is to add a film-specific assistant for the day. This, you guessed it, adds to the overall cost.”

Prioritize Location & Light for Film Photos

Film doesn’t work the same way digital photography does – digital can adapt from bright light to low light with the scroll of a wheel, but film needs natural light. This affects your wedding timeline, the types of images you can capture, and the overall look and quality of your photos, depending on the season and unpredictable factors like weather.

“If you want film to be a priority on your wedding day, choosing locations where it will really shine with your photographer will make a huge difference, rather than trying to just fit it in,” notes Anne. “Having long, sunny summer days makes film easy, but shorter fall and winter weddings, when it’s dark by 4:30 p.m., can make getting those stunning, bright film vibes less achievable.”

“If your wedding is later in the year and you love the light-and-bright look, it makes sense to factor in doing a first look earlier in the day to allow the film to shine at its best,” she adds.

Plan for Additional Photo Time

“The days when film feels best are the ones with lots of coverage hours, where we can both take a deep breath and not be racing against the clock on your timeline,” explains Anne. “If we’re in a rush and only have five minutes for portraits, we’re probably going to have to prioritize getting digital images for the essentials.”

As a couple, consider whether the extra time needed for metering film, loading, and taking that intentional pause fits into your wedding timeline. “It’s a way to slow down and be intentional about each shot,” Anne reminds.

Embrace the Imperfections of Film Photography

Film photography doesn’t offer a camera preview. This style of photography embraces the unpredictable – the occasional soft focus, shifting light, and natural imperfections that make each image unique.

“One of the magical things about film is how the sometimes technically imperfect becomes perfect,” Anne says. “Sometimes that very soft focus, chosen because the light is fading so quickly during golden hour, makes the most angelic, glowing portrait. Sometimes the cocktail hour portrait where your niece runs through the frame in a blur becomes the image that captures the entire mood of the day. These little so-called imperfections or limitations are part of what makes film special.”

Film Photography Tips For Your Wedding

In the words of Brianna Hall of Iris Marie Photography, “Go 100% film for your wedding.” And for anyone else, you can still incorporate film in a way that makes sense for your day, while keeping the security of digital imagery. Here are Brianna’s top tips for executing, embracing, and incorporating film photography.

Add a roll or two of film for specific moments in your day.

This makes those moments feel even more special. For example, use a roll exclusively for your wedding party portraits, just for your couple’s portraits, or only for flash film photos at the end of the night!

For full coverage with film throughout the day, opt for at least one roll of film per hour to ensure your key moments are captured beautifully, while utilizing regular (digital) photos.

Don’t forget film video!

Super-8 is an incredible addition to your wedding day, capturing moments in motion with a timeless, vintage style.

If you’re feeling brave, go 100% film for your wedding.

The images become intentional, purposeful, and finite, giving them a unique, irreplaceable quality.

Your wedding reception meal can be considered the most important dinner party you’ll ever throw, and how the food is served is arguably just as important as how it tastes. We called in the experts at Bistro To Go for a crash course on the various wedding catering styles available to couples for their special day. Owner Nikki Heckman shares the pros and cons of each wedding reception meal style to help you decide which makes the most sense for you and your guest list size, venue, priorities, and wedding style.

Buffet Service

At a buffet, food is typically presented in chafing pans or platters and guests walk along the display helping themselves to the various dishes. It is a simple, traditional service style that is a great option for those looking for a no-fuss, cost-effective solution.

Pros

A buffet does not require as many catering staff members as other styles, easily making it the most affordable service method.

This type of service is very versatile. A buffet can be scaled up or down to match the formality of your event.

When guests serve themselves, they can take as much or as little of something as they like, allowing them to really customize their meal.

Since plates will be located at the buffet stations, you don’t need to worry about setting complete place settings at each table. This could greatly reduce your rental costs.

You won’t need to collect guests’ meal selections, which will make organizing your RSVPs a little easier. Additionally, you won’t have a need for individual menu cards or escort cards (a communal menu sign and seating chart will do the trick!), which will save you a bit of money.

Some caterers may be willing to split selections at 50%, offering two types of main dish instead of one, for example. This allows you to offer an even wider selection to your guests.

A traditional buffet can easily be supplemented with a carving station or made-to-order pasta station. Not only does this add other components to your meal, but it elevates the guest experience.

Cons

Depending on the number of guests, a buffet line can be quite long. To keep wait times at a minimum, we suggest two buffet lines for a party of 120 guests or more.

Waiting in a buffet line may not be comfortable or even possible for guests with mobility issues. This may require assistance from other guests or the service staff.

Some guests may become impatient and hangry as they wait for their table to be released. One way to combat this is to have a salad pre-set on the table or serve a family style pasta course so that guests have something to enjoy while they wait to get in line for the entrees.

Your VIP guests may be offended if others are allowed to get in the buffet line before they are, so the sequence in which tables are released is important.

There is no portion control; guests are allowed to take as much food as they want. Because of this, caterers typically have to over-order and over-prepare to not run out of food. This could mean some food may go to waste if it isn’t eaten.

Buffet set-ups can look a bit basic. Look for a caterer who specializes in artisan displays and ask your florist for help in dressing up the buffet tables.

Contrary to what some may believe, while fewer catering staff members are needed, they are still in fact needed to ensure food is handled safely and guests are served quickly.

Stations

With food stations, guests are presented with multiple set-ups that offer a plethora of food choices. Stations are usually themed or dedicated to specific dishes or types of food. They can be self-serve, assisted, or chef-attended. This service style is a great solution for couples looking to infuse their personalities and a bit of variety into their reception food.

Pros

If you are having trouble choosing a menu, the good news is that, with stations, you don’t have to. You can select multiple options and guests can then customize their meal based on their tastes.

In terms of budget, stations are typically mid-tier, often more expensive than a buffet but not as expensive as plated service.

Guests with dietary restrictions can easily be accommodated without being singled out. With so many options available, they can pick and choose which items best suit their dietary needs.

As like with a buffet, full place settings aren’t needed. You can save on rental costs by skipping the chargers and salad plates.

Lines at stations tend to be shorter than lines at buffets since your guests are dispersed to multiple locations.

Guests tend to visit more than one station, which gives them many chances to explore the room and mingle with others.

Stations lend themselves well to being creative! If you have a lot of out-of-town guests, you can wow them with a Pittsburgh-themed station featuring pierogies or Primanti’s style sandwiches. Come from a big Italian family? Opt for a pasta station where guests can choose their own pasta, sauce, and add-ins. Honeymooning in the Caribbean? Design a station that offers local island fare.

Now is the perfect time to think outside-the-box when it comes to station set-up. Work with your caterer to create visual interest with multi-level displays, floral arrangements, and other decor elements to easily dress up each station.

Cons

Stations require more china – with one plate per person, per station being a general rule of thumb. This could greatly increase your rental costs.

You’ll need to pay extra attention to your room diagram as a station style set-up requires more thought than other service styles. Flow and guest movement from station-to-station needs to be carefully considered, as does access to electrical outlets. Some stations require lights and/or heating elements.

This type of service tends to require more time than others. Since guests are encouraged to mingle and try multiple stations, now is not the time to rush them through dinner. An expanded dinner time should be allotted in your wedding timeline.

Family Style

Family style falls somewhere between a plated dinner service and self-serve options. With this, servers bring several platters to the table and guests can pass them around and help themselves to the selections they like. When done right, it can be magical.

Pros

A family style dinner provides guests with a wide variety of selections and guests can experience multiple main and side dishes.

This style is known for creating connections. It’s easy to strike up a conversation with someone as you ask them to pass the carrots!

It is a great option for small guest lists as it encourages engagement among family and friends and really helps to create that intimate, familial atmosphere.

This style can easily be fused with other catering service styles to expedite service times and reduce time spent clearing courses. For example, the entrees can be plated while side dishes are served family style.

If you don’t want the formality of a plated dinner but still want your guests to be seated, a family style service is the perfect compromise.

Cons

Family style service requires a great deal of orchestration and some caterers do not excel at it. Be sure to ask potential caterers about their experience with this type of service.

Multiple platters can very quickly eat up a lot of space on the table. This should be considered when planning your tablescape and place settings.

With this style, guests tend to take longer to enjoy each course and want to hold off on clearing the table until all guests have finished. You may need to allot for an expanded dinner time in your wedding timeline with this style as well.

More rental items will be needed, including family style bowls, platters, and serving utensils. This should be factored into your budget.

This type of service doesn’t work well in all venues. The catering staff will need a place to plate food that is out of the elements with no steps and that is very near to guests. Be sure to ask your venue how this service style works in their space.

Guests with dietary restrictions will need special consideration and will usually require a separate plated option designed with their needs in mind.

For the food to stay warm and be served quickly, this style requires more service staff than other catering styles.

Plated Dinner

Considered the crème de la crème of wedding dinner, a plated dinner is the most classic of catering service styles. Guests are served multiple courses throughout dinner, all while seated at their table. There are two types of plated meals: a single entree plate that requires each guest to make their selection prior to the wedding and a duo plate where each guest receives the same two entrees. Both can easily be customized to meet dietary needs.

Pros

A beautifully plated meal can very easily create an elegant, luxurious experience for your guests. Pair with butler passed hors d’oeuvres at your cocktail hour and your friends and family will feel well taken care of and like the VIPs they are.

This type of service allows for the most control over the look and feel of the meal.

Your reception will run more smoothly with this type of service since all meals are delivered at the same time. This type of service also takes the least amount of time compared to others.

Since caterers know exactly how much food to order and portions are controlled, food waste is minimized with this type of service.

A duo plate decreases the necessary staff and expense as the complexity of service is minimized because each guest will be served the same meal.

Cons

This type of service is typically the most expensive.

It is highly recommended that you have a wedding planner if you are opting for this type of meal service. The timing of a multi-course plated dinner is essential and should not be winged. A planner will direct the caterer so the dinner unfolds smoothly.

A single entree plate is more logistically challenging as you will need to collect guests’ selections with their RSVPs and then communicate this information to the caterer well in advance of the wedding, typically at least two weeks. This requires a sense of organized detail. You will then need to designate each guest’s selection on a seating card that they should carry to their seat. A large seating chart will not work as it will not let the servers know who gets what meal.

The limited variety in food selections can be challenging or unappealing to some guests.

It also requires additional staff due to the complexity of getting the correct meal to the correct guest. A good rule of thumb is one server for every 10 guests.

You will need to pay careful attention to the floor plan and particularly how much space is between each table. Servers will need adequate space to walk between each table without bumping into a guest’s chair.

A served meal will lead to increased decisions to be made and higher rental costs as the table place setting takes center stage. Everything from the charger plate to the napkin fold is thoughtfully considered. Disposable dishes and serving ware are not recommended or usually considered. If your venue does not have a kitchen, ovens or heated holding cabinets may need to be rented.

While the variety of choices may seem overwhelming, an experienced caterer can help you choose which style will work best for you, taking into consideration your vision, style, personal preferences, guests, and budget.

“Downright magical” were the first words that came to mind after Tuesday’s The Rehearsal, Reimagined – an elevated dinner party at Joyful Commons – an immersive evening designed to reimagine the modern wedding rehearsal dinner. Guests were greeted with a welcome glass of prosecco and individual charcuterie boards waiting at their seats, immediately setting the tone for a thoughtful, hospitality-driven experience. The night unfolded with fresh, creative ideas for hosting a wedding rehearsal dinner, welcome party, or intimate pre-wedding celebration that felt intentional from the very first sip.

In collaboration with Joyful Events by Jade, led by Jade Granda, we curated a mock wedding rehearsal dinner with a signature Burgh Brides twist. The concept? Soft socializing through a relaxed, beautifully styled environment that encourages genuine connection. Because just like on your wedding day, not everyone in your life knows each other – yet.

The warm, welcoming atmosphere at Joyful Commons provided the perfect backdrop to showcase Chef Alekka Sweeney. With the venue’s open concept, guests enjoyed an interactive culinary experience as Chef Alekka prepared and plated three exquisite courses. Each dish was as visually stunning as it was flavorful, and yes, the potatoes were criminally good. The final course was also interactive: mini tiered cakes were presented for guests to decorate themselves, complete with piping bags and sprinkles.

Behind the lens, Carlie Gabrelcik Photography captured the glowing tablescapes and every prosecco clink in a photo reel that radiates a moody warmth. Creating a live playlist on guitar and vocals, Mike Medved Weddings proved once again that live music transforms ambiance instantly – Joyful Commons was practically made for live performances!

Heirloom Floral, specializing in sustainable faux designs so realistic you’d never second-guess them, added lush centerpieces and a dramatic draped installation against the venue’s exposed brick wall. The result was blooming texture without the waste, a thoughtful nod to modern sustainability in wedding design.

Paper goods and signage by With Love Daily Designs elevated every place setting with custom menus, name cards, and statement signage. Guests dined family-style at a long wooden tables topped with copper-rimmed chargers, floral dinner plates, and seafoam green glassware provided by Eventioneers, complete with velvet-cushioned chairs and coordinating high-top tables that created natural mingling pockets throughout the space.

At the bar, Tipsy Wheels Mobile Bar Service served handcrafted cocktails and mocktails, with highlights including a crisp French 75 and a French-style red sangria. Guests and their dates took home snapshots from the Lux Photo Booth, with instant prints.

Adding an unexpected experiential touch, South Hills Jewelers offered on-site jewelry cleaning and expert guidance for future heirloom investments, a subtle but brilliant reminder that wedding celebrations extend far beyond a single day.

For us, this wasn’t just a mock rehearsal dinner, but a thoughtful expression of how to create a wedding welcome event that feels immersive, intentional, and joy-filled. If you’re planning a wedding rehearsal dinner, or simply dreaming up a meaningful gathering, let this be your sign to think beyond the traditional and design an experience your guests will talk about long after the last mini cake has been frosted.
