I am a father who supports my son’s passion for youth quad bike racing, a hobby that has become quite expensive. It involves frequent travel across the UK to attend various events and competitions, as well as significant costs for equipment and maintenance of the bikes.

While I am happy to support my son’s enthusiasm for this hobby, the financial burden is becoming increasingly difficult to manage. The travel costs alone add up quickly, not to mention the high expense of purchasing and maintaining his quad bike. Given these expenses, I’m concerned that the child support arrangements with my ex-partner do not account for the substantial financial commitment required to keep my son involved in this activity.

Under UK government guidelines, paying parents can request a variation in child maintenance to account for special expenses, such as those related to extracurricular activities like sports or hobbies. For example, fuel costs for travel between homes could be considered if they exceed £10 a week. However, I don’t believe the costs of my son’s quad bike racing hobby are being taken into consideration, which has made it even harder to meet both the child support obligations and the financial needs of his hobby.

I would greatly appreciate any advice or experiences from other parents who are balancing the high costs of their child’s hobbies with child support payments. How have you managed the impact of an expensive hobby on your finances and child support arrangements?

Unprofessional organisation

My ex has taken me to csa for regular payments. That’s ok, but what a cock up the csa have made of it all, they have taken it upon themselves to take an amount of money from my company before it even gets in my account. My ex has spoken to them numerous times, as have I, to say that we would like the money to be direct pay and we will sort out any arrears ourselves. We have had at last 2 letters each, saying completely different things and quoting completely different amounts of money, but also agreeing to direct pay. Well, guess what. The money was taken from my company by the csa before it got to my account and it is now lost. They are saying they have not received it. Well, tough luck, because I can’t pay it again. My ex wants her money obviously, nobody knows where it is. When I first started making my phone calls to them, I spoke to different people who promised me that this will happen, then that will happen. Well, nothing did happen, except I was told that the 2 people I talked to were t authorised to tell me what they could do, so what the hell were they doing answering the phone in the first place. This company is a complete utter joke, and so are the people who work there. What’s more, in the space of one week making calls I have been left on hold for 2.30 hrs per call, what sort of organisation is this

Payment calculation

Hi I’ve just started a new job and my wage has gone up soni understand my payments will before this job I was working for lower wages and had to revert to using my credit cards to get by. So now I’m trying to work extra shifts as much as possible to cover this cost after my csa has come out. But they keep putting my payments up based on my over time I’ve tried to explain why I’m working 6 days a week but there not interested how can’t they don’t calculate from my basic income?

Csa caused me to lose my home

I have tried so many times to reduce csa payments I’m a father of 3 I agree to pay for my children of course but I can’t afford to pay rent my take home was £2100 at time rent £950 £1001 csa I asked them to speak to mummy she refused offer of £740 in which I thinks silly £740 or £32 from universal credit she didn’t except so I keep quiting jobs

I was originally with the csa and was subject to the changes in services.

I was homeless and was expected to pay large sums of cash over the doorstep under the treat of imprisonment.

The CMS came into effect and from day 1 they were consistently making attempts to put me on click and collect.

I payed for my son, and am happy to pay for my child however when my sons mother was removing contact whenever she felt like as a form of punishment for me not doing as I was told (ie. She drew up a child arrangement order and was completely unreasonable with her demands I obviously refused to sign but did make suggestions in regards to a fair agreement she refused and took away contact)
She made a demand for a contact order to be made, I explained that at the time I was unable to pay for a solicitor, pay to drive the 150 mile round trip every second weekend and pay full cms (I have asked for a reduction from the cms to allow for the travel nothing ever arrived)
I suggested that if she wanted a contact order put in place she pay for it, she refused and said “I’m not paying for you to see your child” I suggested we use the money from the cms to instruct the solicitor, she refused over text but agreed over the phone, (I have a credible witness to this phone call.) She changed her account details

CMS collect to Pay

Hello, I recently have been told that I am now being moved to collect and pay. This is due to when I dropped in salary from 54000 to 46000, I asked to recalculate how much I pay. They refused to do this, so I paid what it said on the calculator. I have never missed a payment. I’m now paying over £600 a month which I can’t afford. Please can you assist me.

Child maintance

I was in a 2 year abusive relationship my ex partner when she had our daughter we moved into our place that’s when things started to change her words towards me was was vile to nick picking belittling me in front of her friends and family my fiancé’s was being controlled she made me out to be a terrible father and told me I was useless I working 5 to 5 Monday to Friday to get extra money but that was never good enough she started to tell me I should kill myself as the world and my daughter would be better off with out me init. I couldn’t take much more and I had no choice to leave it wasn’t a easy choice because I wanted to be there for my daughter after we split I was going over ever 3 days in the week after work to spend a few hours with daughter. We starter to discuss a payment agreement for my daughter witch we did do at £150 a month what I didn’t expect was for my ex partner to make a malicious act towards me in contacting my work telling them I was abusive a week after I lost my job she messaged me to say now that I’m no longer working and have no income I can’t see my daughter anymore I was heart broken my life was just getting worse everytime shortly after I had a letter through the post to attend court for a non molestation order against me with no findings with false allegation accusing me of being the abuser when in the truth of everything I was the victim I wasn’t only her victim her ex partner before me even told me the things she done to him. She lied to child maintances of when we split up and told them I haven’t paid for 3 months child maintance didn’t even want to listen to let alone let me explain what she has said is false now I’m in arrears with no job I’m mentally struggling I’m having to have counciling to help me with the abuse I suffered under her. I’m in arrears of £668 pounds and was told while I’m out of work the arrears will keep piling up I love my daughter so much and I feel like men in this situation isn’t thought about or there feelings I came close to attempting suicide because I feel like what a women says it goes with child maintance.

I think it’s only far that if a women stops the father seeing his child the mother should face sanctions like these that men do.

. Lose driving licence
. Sent to prison for mentally abusing the child and father
.lose majority of there benefits
. Lose rights there rights to have full custody

To many men are dying because there being denied access so the mother can claim full wack child maintance it’s so wrong on so many levels that women get away of murder same as child maintance service

CSA took money having never contacted me

I split up from my wife in January 2022 ,she made it clear she wanted no contact with me and said if did contact or she would go to the police and say I was harassing her. I respected this. I attempted to resolve financial matters through my family solicitor but my wife never responded, including not attending the hearing date for dispute resolution in September, I had myself calculated what maintenance I should pay using the uk.gov calculator and began paying it by postal order as i had no bank details from her, after 3 months and £1500 with no acknowledgment of receipt I stopped. Yesterday I got my payslip and over £1000 had been deducted by the CSA which was most of my disposable income. I now have £500 to live on for 5 weeks after bills. AT no time have I ever been contacted by the CSA is this correct procedure? I dont have an issue paying maintenance but thought I would been contacted?

I was a father paying child support. I paid when I was supposed to. I was in a long distance relationship with a girl overseas who became my wife in time. The dirt bags at the CSA would not recognise the fact I was outside of the country and not working. They insisted I pay the SAME money. Countless times I tried to tell them. I will never step foot in the UK again because of these crooks.

Why the hell does the parent who stops contact even when there’s a court order in place (that isn’t worth the paper it’s written on) then has a right to claim full maintenance. It’s absolutely disgusting that they are then rewarded by the parent they are punishing by then having to pay them full maintenance for their actions. This is all one sided at the moment and every case should be treated individual. No issue paying for kids that actually get to see their other parent but think it’s wrong having to pay when a parent stops contact. This needs looked at as it’s all wrong.
