One truth is found in John 15:15, where Jesus said, “Apart from Me, you can do nothing.” The other truth is found in Philippians 4:13, where Paul writes, “I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength.” Peter lived in John 15:5. He was a mix of hubris, pride, and irrational self-confidence in a futile endeavor to somehow earn Jesus’ favor. But one day the coin flipped, and Peter learned to live in the truth of Philippians 4:13. He understood that apart from Christ, he was nothing and could do nothing. Saved, sealed, and filled with the Holy Spirit, there were a few core components for these brand-new Spirit-filled believers: the Word of God, fellowship, prayer, and communion. These simple core components have been the foundation for the church since then. And yet, there seems to be a two-year-old in all of us that still says, “I can do it myself!” Eventually, our self-sufficiency and pride disappear when circumstances deplete our strength and resources so that nothing is left but to cry out to Jesus. Though He would rather be our first choice, Jesus is willing to be our last resort. When our desperation overrules our hesitation, we finally come face to face with Jesus and might expect anger and frustration, but instead, Jesus shows us compassion, mercy, and grace.

What would this mean for the heart of Herod after he rejected the Lord? His heart would be continually corrupted and rotted by its deceitful desires. But this isn’t just true for Herod—it applies for all who reject God. This is why Jesus came—to save us from our old self, to give us an opportunity to be born again, and to give us a brand new heart and a new spiritual nature. All of this is available to anyone who comes to Him—even to the worst of sinners.
