As a passionate Google Local Guide, one of my favorite contributions has been capturing and sharing photos—especially immersive 360-degree views—of the places I’ve visited around the world. With more than 12,000 photo contributions and over 85 million views, each image tells a story of exploration, culture, and connection.

Open Google Maps on your phone
Visit a place and take clear exterior photos first
Add interior or 360-degree photos when possible
Upload photos consistently
Track your photo views over time

📷 Tips for Taking Helpful & High-Quality Google Maps Photos

Photos and videos help tell the story of a place. As a Local Guide, your images should be relevant, clear, and in focus.

Use natural light whenever possible
Try different angles and upload only the best shots
Zoom out enough to show the full subject
- Buildings: horizontal exterior shots
- Food: top-down shots for clarity
Respect people’s privacy
- Avoid identifiable faces
- Ask permission when appropriate
- Be extra careful at sensitive places such as schools or hospitals

Dark, blurry, repetitive, duplicate, or copyrighted images may be removed from Google Maps. Local Guides who repeatedly violate content or privacy guidelines may be removed from the program.

In short: Take clear, well-lit photos that accurately represent a place, respect privacy, and focus on helping others understand the location before they arrive.

Digital Transformation & RegTech for Public-Sector Productivity: Key Insights from the APO Conference in Manila

On 1–2 October 2025, I had the privilege to represent Cambodia at the Conference on Digital Transformation and Regulatory Technology (RegTech) for Improving Public-sector Productivity, organized by the Asian Productivity Organization (APO) and hosted by the Development Academy of the Philippines (DAP) in Manila.

The two-day event brought together 91 participants from 16 APO member countries, including six delegates from Cambodia, to explore how digital transformation (DX) and Regulatory Technology (RegTech) can strengthen governance and boost productivity in the public sector.

I was deeply honored to be one of three international representatives (alongside Bangladesh and the Philippines) invited to deliver the Vote of Thanks during the closing ceremony — a meaningful way to conclude such an insightful gathering.

A particularly engaging topic was AI governance and regulatory sandboxes — controlled environments that allow regulators and innovators to test AI and emerging tech solutions before wide-scale deployment.

These “safe testing zones” encourage innovation while ensuring that AI applications comply with ethical, legal, and societal standards. The concept illustrated how adaptive regulation can make governments more future-ready and responsive.

4. Open Data and Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI)

Day two highlighted how open data practices and digital public infrastructure can generate public value. When governments treat data as a shared asset, it enhances transparency, inclusiveness, and accountability.

Examples included digital ID systems, interoperable payment platforms, and open data ecosystems, all of which contribute to smarter regulation and better service delivery.

5. Collaboration Across Borders

Perhaps the greatest value of the APO conference was the exchange of ideas among 16 diverse economies. From policy frameworks to case studies, each shared approach added a regional perspective to how digital transformation and RegTech can scale effectively.

As a participant from Cambodia, I gained valuable insights into how we can leverage digital governance, data-driven decision-making, and regulatory innovation to strengthen our community and national public-sector productivity initiatives.

Reflections from the Vote of Thanks

Delivering the Vote of Thanks at the closing ceremony was both humbling and memorable. I expressed appreciation to the APO, DAP Philippines, all speakers, and fellow participants for their dedication in making this event impactful and collaborative.

The discussions throughout the conference reinforced a clear message:

Attending Connect Live Tokyo 2025 was not just another milestone in my journey as a Local Guide — it was an inspiring, hands-on experience that truly celebrated community, innovation, and impact.

This invite-only summit brought together 54 Local Guides from 14 countries, mostly across the Asia-Pacific region, creating a powerful sense of global connection. Held at Google Japan’s office in Shibuya, Tokyo, the two-day event (July 24–25) offered exclusive insights, meaningful interactions, and memorable moments designed to help us grow as contributors.

Unlike global summits, this regional edition delivered a uniquely focused experience, allowing for deeper discussions, stronger connections, and more personalized engagement with the Google Maps team.

Hearing directly from Googlers and fellow Local Guides gave me new perspectives on how our feedback shapes the product.

🧪 Hands-on Exploration

While I can’t share specific details due to NDA, I can say this: we experienced interactive sessions that inspired ideas for improving contributions and making Maps even more helpful for people everywhere.

🤝 Strengthening Our Community

Beyond sessions, the welcome and closing receptions gave us time to network, exchange stories, and build friendships that go beyond borders. These are the connections that make the Local Guides program truly special.

My 10-Year Journey from Google Maps Maker to Connect Live Attendee: A Cambodian Local Guide’s Story

Back in 2010, digital maps of Cambodia were limited — many streets were missing, and local landmarks were nowhere to be found online. That’s when I began contributing as a Google Map Maker, with one simple goal: to help make my country visible on the map.

What began as mapping roads and places soon turned into a journey of community, impact, and global recognition. I became a Map Maker Trainer and Regional Lead in Cambodia, later a Local Guides Community Moderator, and eventually one of the few contributors selected among thousands of applicants worldwide to attend Google’s international summits.

From 2016 to 2019, I was honored to be selected four years in a row to join the global Local Guides events at Google HQ in California. And now, in 2025, my journey continues as I prepare to attend Connect Live Tokyo 2025 — a new milestone I never expected. This is the story of that journey.

How It All Began: Joining Google Maps as a Map Maker

When Google Map Maker launched, it gave local people a chance to shape their country’s map using firsthand knowledge. In Cambodia, this was a game-changer. I first joined Map Maker around 2008 or 2009, but I officially count my journey starting in 2010—the year I received my first email from the Map Maker team.

In those early days, I was not only adding places like pagodas, schools, clinics, and even narrow streets that didn’t exist on any digital platform, but I was also contributing photos of places through the Panoramio website, which later integrated with Google Maps and Earth.

As one of the earliest active contributors, I took part in local mapping competitions in 2012 and even documented one memorable experience — mapping while caring for a baby nearby during a mapping event! These early contributions helped put Cambodia more clearly on the map, making it easier for both locals and travelers to find essential places.

Becoming a Local Guides Community Moderator in Cambodia

After Map Maker was retired and integrated into Google Maps, the Local Guides program opened a new path in 2015 to contribute and connect. I became a first Community Moderator in Cambodia, supporting and growing the local Local Guides community.

From helping users write quality reviews to encouraging photo contributions and edits, we created a space where Cambodians could share their knowledge and celebrate their local culture with the world.

Selected for Local Guides Summit 2016: A Global First

In 2016, Google announced its first-ever Local Guides Summit in Mountain View, California. Thousands of applicants from around the world submitted their stories. I was incredibly honored to be one of just 75 Local Guides selected globally to attend this historic summit.

It was my first time visiting Google HQ — and the first time Cambodia was represented in this global Local Guides event. The summit brought together passionate contributors from around the world to share ideas, learn from Googlers, and build lifelong friendships.

From Summit to Connect Live: Selected Four Years in a Row

After 2016, the program grew — and so did the events. I was thrilled to be selected again in 2017, 2018, and 2019, each year among thousands of applicants worldwide.

2017 – Local Guides Summit (150 Participants): I returned to California with an even larger and more diverse group — and this time, Cambodia was represented even more strongly with three of us proudly attending. We participated in product feedback sessions, shared regional insights, and explored how Local Guides could help improve features like accessibility, reviews, and business listings.

2018 – Connect Live (200 Participants): The summit was rebranded as Connect Live, welcoming more contributors from more countries. I met Local Guides from all continents and shared Cambodia’s progress in mapping lesser-known places and cultural landmarks.
2019 – Connect Live (200 Participants): In my fourth year as a summit attendee, I was proud to represent consistency, passion, and the impact of long-term contributions. We focused on building sustainable communities, mapping for accessibility, and supporting local economies.
