Dizziness, stuffy nose, post nasal drip, stopped up ears, thick mucus and a scratchy throat are the most common. Ultimately, the goal of treatment is to eliminate the infection, but it helps to alleviate the symptoms along the way, especially in the case of sinusitis and dizziness, which can interfere with your ability to function.

Sinus cavities are air pockets in your skull located in your forehead, around the nose and cheeks. When these cavities get filled with thick mucus that doesn't drain properly, a sinus infection can result. The congestion can be caused by allergies, viral, fungal or bacterial infection. These instigators of sinus misery can work alone or together, making decisions about treatment a challenge.

When you are dizzy, you feel light headed and/or physically off-balance. Maintaining balance is a complex process involving several difference structures in the body.

Clogged Ears And Dizziness Symptoms

How Is It Related?

Your inner ears contain structures that sense directions. They function whether your eyes are open and closed, but work with the eyes which send signals to let your brain know where your body is in space, such as upside down or right side up. There are receptors in the skin and other tissues called proprioceptors that tell the brain where each part of the body is and sense when you are touching the ground or in motion. Your brain processes all of this information and makes sense of it, which keeps us in balance.

If the brain receives conflicting information, you get dizzy. A sinus infection can alter the pressure of the inner ear and cause a change in the cochlea (the primary structure that deals with balance). The cochlea, in turn sends a different signal to the brain, which results in dizziness.

While most symptoms of sinusitis are a nuisance, dizziness can create problems driving or performing other tasks. So it is important to seek treatment quickly. Doctors can prescribe medication to treat sinus infections, but there are also effective alternative treatments.

There is no treatment for sinusitis that works for everyone. For example, you may need to change antibiotics if the first one doesn't work or you might find that an alternative treatment that never fails for a friend doesn't work for you at all.

Preventing sinusitis is the best way to eliminate the dizziness and other symptoms. Here are a few suggestions:

Stay well hydrated. Drink lots of water. It makes a difference.

Avoid heavily processed foods with lots of chemicals added

Pay attention to your body when you eat. If your nose gets stopped up after you eat something, avoid that food. You are probably allergic to it.

If the air gets too dry, use a humidifier or vaporizer.

If you suffer from nasal allergies, use an air conditioner (remember to keep the filter clean) or air purifier.

If it's too late and you already suffer from clogged sinuses and dizziness, treatments such as eucalyptus vapor, over-the-counter nasal sprays, decongestants, and cayenne pepper can relieve pressure and help you regain your balance quickly.

Even if you are sure your dizziness is caused by sinus problems, see your doctor right away. It may be your sinuses, or it may be something else. Whatever the cause, dizziness can interfere with your daily activities. Deal with it quickly.

Finding a reliable treatment for sinusitis and dizziness [http://www.sinusproblemssolved.com] that works consistently can be a challenge. Can Diet Help Your Sinuses?

Most individuals don't spend a whole lot of time thinking about our sinuses until something goes wrong and they get clogged. Clogged sinuses can be quite a distressing thing to experience and they could make a flu or a cold even harder to get through. Most of us hope to treat our sinuses with medicine or even with steam but the truth is that the different things we eat can have quite a major effect on the tiny passageways that run through our faces. So how do you help your sinuses by using foods? Keep reading to determine precisely what foods do or tend not to help your sinuses feel better.

Dairy And Your Sinuses

If you begin to have problems with your
sinuses, you need to stay away from milk and other dairy products.
Dairy boosts the creation of mucous plus phlegm in your body. This
material will make its way into your sinus passageways and keep them
from draining properly and also cause major blockages. These kinds of
blockages can help breed all sorts of different bacteria that will only
help you stay sick. This is the reason that most dairy food ought to be
avoided altogether when you are ill--the phlegm gets built up in your
body making your cough worse and making you sicker than you want to be.

Spicy Food And Your Sinuses

There
are some people who believe that eating things like spicy foods (like
wasabi, horseradish, etc) will be super helpful in clearing up sinus
problems. While this can certainly help thin out the mucous in your
sinuses, it's also likely to give you a seriously runny nose and other,
temporary, relief. If you suffer from troubles like acid reflux or
heartburn, you should stay away from spicy foods because, in some cases,
the regurgitated stomach acid can work its way up into your throat and
cross the barrier into your sinus membranes and cause some really bad
problems for you.

Alcohol And Your Sinuses

It is not advisable to ingest alcohol when
you're having problems with your sinuses. Alcohol dehydrates your body
and helps to harden the mucous and phlegm that is all the way through
your body (especially in your sinuses). This causes your sinuses to
become plugged and pretty much undrainable so, while alcohol may be able
to help you sleep, it could also be prolonging your illness. Tea,
though, could be substantially helpful. A cup of hot herbal tea, along with
having the steam that will help you break up clogs of mucous in your
sinuses, usually has other properties that can help you cure your
illness though that really depends on the type of tea you choose to brew.

Caffeine And Your Sinuses

Don't
eat or drink caffeine. You might be tempted to substitute a cup of
coffee for tea. Don't do it. Caffeine dehydrates your
system much like alcohol does so that shows that while you drink (or
eat) it, you will have a harder time healing your sinuses and the rest
of your body too.

Obviously you'll want to talk with your doctor
about it because everybody's body reacts differently to things. What
succeeds for one man might not work for you, so talk to your doctor if
you have prolonged issues with your sinuses.

Essential Oils for Clogged Ears
A potent vasoconstrictor and antispasmodic Cypress oil stimulates blood circulation and speeds healing and is an excellent oil to use for sports injuries, strains and sprains, aches and pains.

Lavender

Highly scented Lavender has a distinctly sweet floral-spice aroma that's a little wild and woody. Distilling at high altitude allows lower temperatures and lower pressure for distillation making it possible for the volatile phytochemicals to come through intact in the final product.

Lavender oil is a decongestant (agent for relief or reduction or congestion) and stimulates cellular repair and regeneration. Its restorative action helps to strengthen and revive the entire bodymind system. Lavender’s action as a sedative and relaxant makes it effective for soothing, tranquilizing and calming nervous tension, stress, insomnia, anxiety and palpitations.

Method Of Application

Mix the essential oils together in equal parts. Dispense 15 drops of your new oil blend into a 1 ounce bottle of your favorite carrier oil, shake your blend well and allow to synergize for 24 hours, or longer as time permits. Dispense 1-3 drops of your blend in dilution into the palm of your hand, inhale and apply to the back and front of your ear lobe and the back of your neck on the affected side, or both sides as needed.

The oils will enter the neurovascular gateways located in these areas to effectively trigger your relaxation and healing response to promote relief for ringing ear (tinnitus) and clogged ears.

Pure essential oils are gentle, noninvasive complementary forms of health care for balancing and synchronizing your body, mind and spirit and a natural, safe and effective way to enhance your health and well-being.

It is not uncommon that patients who suffer from a clogged nose also develop clogged ears.

Why??? There are 2 major and 1 minor reasons.

First a little anatomy lesson.

In the back of the nose, there is an opening that leads into a tunnel (eustachian tube) that goes up into the ear. When the ears get clogged, a person can get the pressure out by "popping the ears." This can be accomplished by yawn, swallow, or trying to blow out the nose that is pinched shut. When the ear pops, what happens is that the tunnel opens up allowing pressure to come out the ear. Watch video:

Mucosal Swelling

Now when the patient's nose gets obstructed, it may mean the nasal lining has become swollen making it difficult to breath. It also means the tunnel that goes up into the ear may be swollen shut as well. As such, it may become difficult if not impossible to pop the ears. This is known as eustachian tube dysfunction.

Negative Pressure Inside the Nose

However, there is a more active process that may lead to ear clogging beyond just mucosal swelling of the eustachian tube.

When the nose is obstructed, every time the patient tries to breath in thru the nose, negative pressure is built up in the back of the nose where the eustachian tube opening is located. As such, this negative pressure inside the nose can get transmitted up into the ear resulting in negative pressure to slowly build up in the ear as well which can ultimately cause a clogged ear sensation. This is just like sucking on a straw to draw fluid out of a cup, though in this case, the straw is analogous to the eustachian tube, the fluid is air, cup is the ear, and the mouth is the nose.

Bernoulli's Principle

In fluid dynamics, Bernoulli's principle states that for an inviscid flow, an increase in the speed of the fluid occurs simultaneously with a decrease in pressure.

To use an example, if you are driving a car with the window down, the fast-moving air outside the car creates a negative pressure inside the car causing things to not just blow around, but does cause some suction effect to things within the car (paper inside the car potentially getting "sucked" to the outside).

When the nose becomes clogged, airflow increases in the back of the nose (think garden hose where you have the same amount of water flow, but by changing the nozzle diameter, flow can be increased by making diameter smaller or decreased by making diameter larger). Due to Bernoulli's principle, negative pressure builds up inside the ear due to this increased nasal airflow.

This negative pressure can be transmitted into the ear causing it to become clogged.

So there you have it... 3 reasons why a clogged nose can lead to clogged ears!

That also means that often, if you just treat the clogged nose... the clogged ears will get better as well!

Conventional Medication for Sinus Infections

There are many things you can take to fight a sinus
infection. Apart from antibiotics, there are others as well namely
antihistamines, decongestants, leokitrienes, mucolytics, nasal saline
irrigation and steam inhalation as well as steroids.

Antihistamines are recommended if the doctor has determined that your sinus
infection is caused by an allergy. Majority of them do not have to be
prescribed by a doctor so you can easily get this off the counter. The
only limitation with antihistamines is the side effects. Those who take
it will usually feel groggy or sleepy while some may experience dryness.
To counter this, decongestants are added to the ingredients of the
antihistamine like those normally found on those that are prescribed by
the doctor.

Then there are decongestants. These are also
available over the counter and in prescription form. These are designed
to relieve congestion, nasal pressure and nasal swelling by reducing the
blood flow to the membranes that in turn will improve air flow, lessen
breathing through the mouth, decrease pressure in the sinus and head as well as ease discomfort.

The
one thing it cannot do is relieve a runny nose. Sadly, it also has side
effects such as increased blood pressure and heart rate which means
patients who have high blood pressure or heart problems have to consult a
doctor before taking them.

Leokotrienes are anti-inflammatory prescription drugs that are used to prevent inflammation in the airway and sinus cavities. It has been proven useful in helping patients who have sinus
infections due to asthma. The side effects associated with this drug
include dryness of the nasal passages, headaches, bleeding, crusting,
upset stomach and skin rashes.

The doctor may also recommend the
use of mucolytics. This is also used in treating cough because it
destroys or dissolves mucus which makes it difficult for the person to
breathe. These are available in tablet or liquid form. You can also
inhale it when this is placed inside a nebulizer.

This is usually
given in high dosages as this is the only way to achieve easier
drainage. Once this is done, it will be easy for the body to expel
through coughing. If not, this has to be done with the help of suction.

Your
doctor may also recommend nasal saline irrigation and steam inhalation.
This is the only one that does not have any side effects. It is safe
and non-addictive. This works almost immediately especially when what
you are dealing with is indeed a viral infection so you can stop using
it after 3 to 5 days.

Steroids are also used to get rid of sinus
infections. In fact, there are two kinds and the one used for
inflammatory conditions are known as glucocorticosteroids. This can be
administered orally, applied to the skin or by injection.

The
side effects associated with it include increased appetite, weight gain,
upset stomach, increase blood sugar and blood pressure, sleep
disturbance, mood swings as well as fluid retention. These gradually
disappear of course once you stop taking it.

As you can see, there are other medications around that doctors can use to help you fight off your sinus
infection. They will have to determine first what is causing it rather
than through trial and error because this can lead to complications and
you surely don’t want that to happen to you.

Allergy and Sinus Relief

Allergy and Sinus Relief

For majority of the people who are suffering from sinusitis is the
most problem huge pain in their nose. There are more issues apart from
the pain: reduced energy levels, mental block, problems with sleep, bad
breath. So, the main question is how to get sinus relief. But, before
give explanation of this, you will need first to understand what
sinusitis is.

Sinusitis- What is that?

Sinuses are areas under the bridge of the nose, where the air of the
breath are passing through. Sinusitis may be related as an inflammation
of your sinuses. The most cause of inflammation of your sinuses, with
duration from few days and more than three months is bacteria infection.

In the case that your sinusitis is type with longer duration, then
it could be said that you have a chronic sinusitis. The most reason that
causes of chronic sinusitis is attack which is flu, coldness or allergy
attack. These are influencing to inflame of the sinus membranes. The
main reason for sinusitis is blockade of the sinuses drainage openings
and all this with collected bacteria, make great 'ground for breeding'
for themselves.

Allergy- What is It?

Allergy is defined as results of hypersensitive immune system, which
is cause of entering of foreign substance, because of the mistake and
wrong think of immune system that this substance is harmful to the body,
so it starts with attack, providing antibodies for combat it. Because
of making antibodies en masse, immune system influence on starting up
with allergy. Most often symptoms of allergy are respiratory swelling,
rashes, itches, problem with breathing, nasal congestion or even death.

Symptoms of Sinusitis

Usually the symptoms of allergy and sinusitis are similar. Still,
sinusitis is often followed with pressure on the face or with pain,
usually in the period of the end of the bending, green or yellow mucus
or post nasal drip mostly at night. Also, chronic sinusitis may be
longer duration than allergies.

Sinus and Allergy Relief

Considering that both and allergies and sinus have mostly same
symptoms, the treatment for both of them may be same. Usually sinus and
allergy relief is not followed with treating of condition itself, but
rider alleviates symptoms of sinus or allergy. There are few top
products intended for sinus and allergy relief.

Eustachian Tubes - Clear Left, Clear Right

We all experience plugged ears when flying, but to different degrees. For some, it can be very painful and the ears can stay plugged for weeks. This can be very problematic and many have to avoid flying altogether.

I found this article that talks about flying and plugged ears. The author recommends a product that is easy to use and can help keep equalize the pressure in your ears and keep the Eustachian tube open.

Plugged ears and other middle ear issues (ear pressure, ear pain, clogged ears, and hearing loss) can be a problem during descent and landing- a critical time of concentration for pilots.

Gauges and checklists focus on the "health" of the aircraft, but what about the health of the pilot, the most important part of aviation? Life happens even at 37,000 feet and with life comes physical issues pilots must deal with to eliminate distraction when flying a plane. Flying with congestion and plugged ears- whether from a cold or allergies can quickly cause ear pressure and excruciating pain during descent and for days after a flight.

For pilots, landing a plane is one time when focus is paramount and a physical distraction dangerous. With descent comes changing altitude - a crucial time for ear pressure to be regulated. This is why congestion, clogged ears, and ear issues can ground even the best of pilots.

Normally yawning, opening and closing the mouth, or doing the Valsalva Maneuver can help to open the Eustachian Tube (the little "pop" we hear) to regulate the pressure in the middle ear with the outside environment.

But what happens when yawning, Valsalva, or chewing gum doesn't work? What happens when congestion from allergies or a cold prevents the little tube from opening and regulating inner ear pressure?

As changes in the middle ear cavity build, pressure and pain can become an issue for even the best pilots. This negative pressure may create a vacuum, pulling the tympanic membrane inward and fluid from the surrounding tissue into the middle ear cavity. The inward pull of the tympanic membrane combined with the pressure of fluid can result in hearing loss, a feeling of fullness, and pain.

Fluid in the middle ear cavity is ideal for infection (warm, moist environment). Bacteria from upper respiratory infections love to take up residence in this fluid and may result in horrific ear infection symptoms.

The Eustachian Tube plays a key role in equalizing pressure for pilots as well as preventing further ear issues. Learning different techniques to help open this tube can make a world of difference for those flying with congestion or in a rapid descent.

Fully functioning instruments are vital to flight for aircraft. Fully functioning ears are vital to pilots to avoid distraction, pain, and hearing loss.
"Clear Left...Clear Right" has a whole new meaning with Eustachian Tubes!
Are your ears ready for flight?

You may be experiencing plugged ears, combined with nasal congestion or a runny nose.

I Am Pregnant - Why are my ears clogged ?

Clogged ears during pregnancy is due to an increase in blood flowing to your mucous
membranes. More specifically, there might be fluid now that build up in your Eustachian tube and/or your Eustachian tube is swollen.

Women report that the stuffed ears go away by themselves but sometimes only after the pregnancy.

Clogged Ears During Pregnancy

What Can I Do ?

First, make sure your ears are not clogged because of wax build up. Wax build up can happen anytime and pregnancy wouldn't be the cause. Do not attempt to use a Q-Tip to take out the wax, this will only push the wax further. Use instead ear wax removal products.

If your ears are clear of wax the problem is behind your ear drum. You want to drain the liquid down in your throat.

Usually, the doctor would tell you to use decongestant. But when pregnant, you should talk to your doctor first. You cannot use decongestant pills or nose spray during the first trimester.

Think instead of massages, inhaling a lot of steam and learn also how to pop your ears to open the Eustachian tube.

If your clogged ears are caused sinus infection, you will have to take control of your sinus condition.

Sinusitis is a common medical condition that occurs when your sinuses (the small air-filled spaces that are lined with mucus membranes, seen behind the forehead, nasal bones, cheeks, and eyes) get infected with viruses, bacteria or fungi. The number of people getting affected by this disorder is increasing daily because of environmental factors and lifestyle choices. Some causes of sinus infections include, smoking, dust, changes in altitude, having a weakened immune system and having diseases like hay fever, cystic fibrosis, Kartagener syndrome and immotile cilia syndrome.

Even though, there are several medical treatment methods for sinusitis such as amoxicillin, clarithromycin and doxycycline, the best method to keep sinus infections away is self care. This article will brief you on many methods of self care, so that you can choose a feasible home remedy for sinus infection today.
The method of nasal irrigation is the best home remedy for sinus infection. You must mix a quarter of a teaspoon in warm water and draw it into your ear and nasal cavity using a bulb syringe. However, today, nasal saline sprays are available. This will help clear off the mucus at the first sign of sinusitis.

Drinking plenty of water throughout the day is a general tip that will not only help you to avoid sinus infections, but also to maintain overall good health.

Inhaling steam at least 2 times a day (up to 4 times a day, if you have a severe case of infection) will give you relief from several nasty symptoms of the disorder. An alternative to inhaling steam is to use a warm face towel over your face a few times a day.

Steam Inhaler

Another great home remedy for sinus infection is grapes. Yes, grapes. Taking about 50 milligrams of grape seed extract three times daily will help reduce the symptoms of sinusitis almost immediately. Grape seed extract is also a quick cure for headaches brought about by sinus infections. Another kitchen ingredient that’d make a great home remedy for sinus infection is ginger. Take about half a cup of freshly cut ginger root and simmer it in a cup of water for about 15 minutes. Soak a face towel in the mixture and cover your face with it. You will be surprised at how revitalized your nasal cavity and your skin feels.

Finally and most importantly, the best cure for sinusitis and the cure that is better than all drugs and any home remedy for sinus infection, is maintaining a healthy diet. Attempt to avoid any food that can trigger excessive mucus secretion. These food items include milk, ice-cream, alcohol and cold beverages. In addition, keeping away from pollutants, avoiding smoking and using face masks when dealing with dust will help you keep your sinuses clear.

The middle ear is connected to the throat via the Eustachian tube, aka the auditory canal. The canal may become clogged with mucus from sinus cavities, caused by excess mucus from allergies and colds and sinusitis. Swelling in the nasal, head and ear sinuses is common. If swelling occurs in the ear sinuses or Eustachian tube, mucus or even pus can become trapped there, causing a feeling of swollen, clogged, plugged, sore, congested ears, poor hearing, or even a feeling of water sloshing deep in the head.

This solution can be done at home and relieves Eustachian tube swelling so that the mucus can drain naturally.

Prepare your space

Prepare an area at the kitchen or bathroom sink. Have a towel nearby to wipe up with, this can be messy. Have a box of tissues or a handkerchief to blow your nose with (a lot). Set out your neti pot and read the instructions.

  Steps

Buy a neti pot at the local drug store. Saline rinse is not required, use distilled water(Or boil your tap water). You can buy saline packets or rinse to use or make your own saline (salt water) if you prefer. Tap water is harsh on the sinuses, and may contain microorganisms; please boil your tap water before using your Neti pot.

Buy a nasal relief spray Find a nasal spray that contains phenylephrine or Oxymetazoline . You can get this over the counter at the local grocery or drug store. Phenylephrine or Oxymetazoline spray is good for congestion.

Prepare an area at the kitchen or bathroom sink. Have a towel nearby to wipe up with, this can be messy. Have a box of tissues or a handkerchief to blow your nose with (a lot). Set out your neti pot and read the instructions.

Practice cleaning your nasal sinuses with the neti pot using saline and distilled water. See the video below for more details. When you can rinse your nasal cavity easily with the neti pot, and have the water run cleanly in one nostril and out the other, with out stopping, you are ready to proceed.

Fill the neti pot 1/2 way with very warm water. Saline solution is optional. That would make around 1 cup. Add 10 drops of nasal spray to the neti pot and mix well.

Begin pouring the solution into your nasal cavity. Right after the solution begins to drain out of your other nostril, plug your nose with your hand by squeezing your nostrils shut as if swimming under water. Your sinuses will be filled with solution now.

At this point you will hold your breath, so the rest is done rather quickly. You must use the back of your tongue to plug the spot in the back of your throat where your nose and nasal sinus drains into your throat.

You might want to practice that before getting to this step so you can do it when the time comes. Try pressing the back of your tongue up and backwards into your throat, and then it stops up your nose and throat so you hold your breath. That will prevent the rinse from draining out of your sinuses into your throat while you tip your head around.

Set down the neti pot and keep your nostrils squeezed tight. Be prepared to feel your ears 'pop' during the next steps. You may also feel a quick mild or sharp pain when the liquid reaches your inner ear canal as it is not used to feeling this, but it is not harming it. It is no different than using nasal spray in your nose. The sinus cavities are all the same no matter where they are in your head but the ear canal one is not easy to reach by simply inhaling nasal spray.

With the solution in your sinuses, do this series of movements:

Tip your head back and look at the ceiling, and hold until count of 10.

Hold your head up normally (keep your nose plugged the whole time) then tip your head to the side so one ear faces the ground, hold for count of 10. You should feel the liquid traveling around inside your sinus cavities. Do not worry, it cannot go any where else.

Tip your head to the other side, by rolling your neck around smoothly, so the other ear faces the ground, hold for count of 10.

Now lean forward as if you were going to touch your toes so your head is upside down. Hold to count of 10.

Now stand up straight, and then lean over the sink and let go of your nose. The rinse will drain out.

Begin blowing your nose.. but NOT too hard! Very lightly or you can develop problems with fluid in your middle ear.

Do the Valsalva Maneuver. That means to equalize pressure in your ear drums. Plug your nose and "exhale" through your ears to pop them like you would when flying or scuba diving.

Blow your nose forcefully some more.

[message]

Important

🚫Do NOT use tap water in your NetiPot. Tap water not adequately filtered or treated. Please use only distilled or previously boiled water.

By now, the swelling should be going away in your Eustachian tubes, as the nasal spray works pretty quickly to reduce swelling in the tissue and membranes. And the fluid that was trapped in there should be coming out when you blow your nose. It may possibly drain down your throat later too. Your ear should be unclogged and you can hear immediately. It is very possible to have large amounts of green or yellow or white mucus come out if both ears were clogged and full of liquid. This can be from sinus or ear infections and it is pus and infection fluid and mucus. It can seem like cups of mucus and that is not unusual as all of it was trapped inside your head and now the swelling of the Eustachian tube has been reduced, it is able to flow out properly.

  Video

The video here shows how to use a neti pot showing how to hold solution in sinuses and swish.

  Tips

Read these instructions over first before attempting this as it is rather complex. You might even want to do a dry run or two before actually using water.

Practice the neti pot first, before attempting to move the rinse into your middle ear.

If this does not relieve your ear pressure and you are sure that it is from sinus swelling in the Eustachian tube, then try it again, and this time, try pressurizing your ear drums while the solution is in your deep ear sinuses after tipping your head all around, this will force solution deep into your ear canals. This may cause more discomfort momentarily but it will go away and you will be thankful if it relieves your clogged ears.

If swelling and mucus in the inner ear is not your problem, this will not work for you. You could have ear wax in the outer ear, and ear infection, or other issues. Please consult your doctor.

If you have ever gone to the doctor to have your ear drum lanced, to allow fluid to drain, this solution could work for you instead. This does the same thing but from the inside. This can even work for kids with recurring ear problems if you can get them to do it.

Using the medicated nasal spray OPENS the passage the same way it opens clogged nasal passages. If you rub your finger outside your nose on the bridge, you can get some air in. Blowing your nose helps for about 5 minutes, then it is clogged right back up. This is the same exact thing going on in the Eustachian tube. The medicated nasal spray makes the swelling go away in the membranes so the clogged mucus can come out. It may come back a little, like your stuffy nose would after nasal spray use, so you may have to repeat the process for a few days if you are in an active allergy flare up.

The mucus has to be liquid to drain out of the Eustachian tube.

Unfortunately,
some foods can cause throat mucus, and if you are already dealing with
throat mucus, the last thing you want to do is add to the problem.

Stop eating these foods if you have mucus

Milk and milk products like yogurt, cottage cheese and butter, cause excess mucus in the throat.
These items carry protein molecules called casein which increases
secretions of mucus and is difficult to digest.

Along with milk
products, caffeine, sugar, salt, non- herbal teas, (especially black
tea), all create excess mucus. Soy is one of the most mucus making plant foods there is.
Those who give up meats and dairy and switch to soy products, have a
greater risk of creating an unhealthy mucus build up in the body.

What to eat for mucus in the throat

Although there are many foods and food groups that can cause mucus in the throat, there are also a multitude of foods that can help to relieve it.
A spoonful of honey and ginger can help the body to get rid of excess
mucus; this is a popular remedy for many sufferers. Spicy foods like
cayenne pepper, wasabi, and chili peppers will all help the body release
mucus build up in the nose and throat.

It is important to make sure you
are drinking an adequate intake of fluids
a day to help mucus to pass through the throat. Water is the number one
help for throat mucus; pair it with vitamins C, E and Zinc for a
natural remedy for throat mucus!

  www.nativeremedies.com/ailment/clear-phlegm-and-throat-mucus.html

Vitamins for Clogged Ears

This info on vitamins and nutrition for clogged ears is taken directly from www.soundtherapy.com.au

How does nutrition help the ear and brain

The ear is often referred to as the most
energy hungry organ of the body. All parts of the ear require high
quantities of nutrients to function properly and to avoid degenerative
problems such as hearing loss or tinnitus. Only if the right elements
and enzymes are present can the nerves successfully fire the precise
signals at millisecond intervals required to accurately transmit sound.

The delicate balance of this system can be upset by

Insufficient oxygen due to poor circulation in the inner ear

A deficiency in the trace minerals essential for enzyme activity

A toxic overload being carried by the body

Excessive free radical activity

The electrical stability of the cochlea
depends upon the presence of minerals such as magnesium and calcium, and
on a correct balance of necessary enzymes, fatty acids and amino acids.

The tiny hair like cells called cilia
are the final stage of sound transmission before the charge is relayed
to the auditory nerve. Slight disturbances in the equilibrium of enzymes
can lead to the death of some of the cilia.

Colloidal minerals

Colloidal minerals are very minute
particles which have already been absorbed and processed by plants. They
come in a liquid form and are readily “bio available”, meaning the body
can absorb them. They are estimated to be 90% more available to the
body than other types of mineral supplements. A good colloidal mineral
will contain at least 60 different minerals.

Super antioxidants

Over the last few decades many new
sources of anti oxidants have been discovered. The first generation,
vitamins A, C and E will work for three hours in the body. The second
generation found in grape seed extract and pine bark extract and Ginkgo
biloba will last two to three times longer. Third generation anti
oxidants, (circuminoids) have now been discovered and will last for up
to three days, cleaning your body of free radicals. A good anti oxidant
supplement will contain all of these ingredients

The benefits

The health benefits of good quality
nutritional supplementation are far reaching. Not only can this prevent
chronic disease over the long term. It may also improve the health of
the skin, gums and organs as well as improving digestion and
circulation, reducing stress and boosting energy and general well being.

This website on sound therapy has interesting info on how treat plugged ears with sound therapy. I found only one website on the subject of Sound Therapy. I wasn't familiar with sound therapy, but there is a whole section on chronic sinus problems and blocked ears.

SoundTherapyInternational.com

How does Sound Therapy help blocked ear?

The sensation of fullness, blocked ear,
or frequent popping and clicking is caused by the inability of the
Eustachian tube to open as required. The Eustachian tube connects the
air filled chamber of the middle ear with the back of the throat, and is
the only way to equalise the air pressure in the middle ear. When the
pressure inside the middle ear does not match the air pressure outside
the ear drum, the drum cannot vibrate freely as it should, so hearing
becomes muffled.

The opening and closing of the Eustachian tube
is controlled involuntarily by the hammer muscle, one of the muscles
inside the middle ear. If the hammer muscle has become weak or over
contracted, it cannot do its job correctly. Sound Therapy exercises and
rehabilitates the hammer muscle, restoring its function and making
equalization of the middle ear air pressure easy and automatic.

This video is very helpful for understanding how sound therapy is used for blocked ears.

These tips are for anybody who get plugged ears when they have a cold.

Prevent Clogged Ears

An important tip to avoid clogged ears during cold and sinus
infection is not to blow your nose to hard. Nonetheless, it is important that the mucus COMES OUT - do not sniff constantly and hold back the congestion. Here is the tip : make sure you keep
your mouth open when blowing your nose.

To encourage drainage naturally and relieve ear pressure, keep the head
elevated to approximately six inches. This tip is particularly useful
when dealing with clogged ears in case of children.

Drink water. Better yet : drink hot herbal tea. You have to keep the mucus thin as possible.

Learn how to pressurize/depressurize your ears. Lots of yawning, swallowing and practice some ear equalization techniques. For children, you could get the Otovent balloon - a simple device that opens the Eustachian tube and allows the fluid that has collected
in the middle ear to drain naturally down the back of the throat.

Use decongestant. A pill or nasal spray. Even if your nose is not plugged, you should use a decongestant if you think you could get your ears plugged

I wanted more specific massages to relieve a plugged ear, so search for " Tai Chi for plugged ears" This one blog was very useful to me :

http://chairtaichi.wordpress.com

it's a little hard to navigate the site, but look for :

Exercise #81 – Clearing Head Congestion 1
Exercise #82 – Clearing Head Congestion 2

Tai Chi for Plugged Ears - part 1

Sit as usual with your feet flat on the floor shoulder-width apart to
allow your energy to flow freely. Your back should be supported by the
back of your chair. Don’t worry about timing your breathing with your
movements for this exercise.

Using your thumbs, rub behind your ears in the general area of the mastoids.

Continue to rub briskly for a full minute.

Then, cup your ears with your hands and release continuing for a total of 12 times.

Repeat the behind-the-ear rub then cup your ears again.

Complete your session by sitting quietly with your eyes closed and
breathe in and out slowly with concentration for a minute or two.

This is a video showing the "cupping" with the hands. I read about people doing this under the shower to make even more suction.

Tai Chi for Plugged Ears - part2

These exercises provide an effective method
to relieve migraines and headaches or to clear head congestion caused by
allergies, sinusitis or a cold.

Sit up in bed or in a comfortable chair in a quiet area of your house.

Rub your head all over as though you were shampooing your hair for at least a full minute.

Then, using your thumb and index finger press upward against the hollows of the eye socket closest to the bridge of your nose.

At the same time, press the thumb of your other hand in the center hollow of your neck directly underneath your skull.

Hold your fingers at these two areas while you breathe in and out slowly through your nose for a full minute.

Return your hands to your lap and breathe in and out through your nose again for a few seconds.

Is there something I should be eating or should avoid ? I wanted to know the same thing :

Diet Tips for Blocked Ears

http://www.askanaturopath.com

Drinking warm glasses of water with lemon juice and
Manuka honey are a great way of increasing fluid intake as well as
providing bioflavinoids and Manuka honey is a natural antibiotic

Reduce mucus producing foods such as dairy, wheat
and sugar and consider having an allergy test to determine any trigger
foods and environmental allergens which may be contributing to mucus
build up

Increase alkalising foods in the diet such as water,
rice, grains, nuts and seeds, plenty of fruits and vegetables, miso
soup, green barley powder to reduce inflammation and acidity

Increase water intake (at least 2 litres/
day). Include herbal teas also such as Marshmallow, Echinacea, Ginger,
Lemon, Elecampagne, Licorice and Rosehip and Fenugreek

Increase sulphur rich foods in your diet such as
onions and garlic as these help to break down congestion. Also increase
Chilli, Horseradish and Turmeric as these are also anti-inflammatory in
action and will help to break down congestion also

Enjoy a vegetable juice each day such as carrot,
tomato, celery, ginger and beetroot. These ingredients are very
nourishing and improve nutritional status, alkalising and immunity

These suggestions are for people who have clogged ears due to congestion and fluid buildup behind the ear drum. You have to drain the fluids in the Eustachian tube.

So - drink water. Drink until your pee has no color in it. And since you have to drink water, make herbal teas. I put boiled water on chili powder and add lime. Makes wonders for congestion.

If your congestion is becoming a chronic condition, you should look into allergy conditions, especially dairy and wheat.

This guy here unplugged his ears by eating a soup !

Anyways, i've been sick for eternity already. Since like September, got
some crazy foreign angina from a friend who visited from Europe, got
over it in a month, then got sick in december because my retarded office
is always cold, almost recovered mid-January when one night I got
really cold and after that hell started, running nose, crazy coughing,
clogged ears. It more or less got better after a couple of weeks, but
clogged ears remained. So annoying, I tried every possible thing nothing
helped. So one night I went to Chinese restaurant and ordered a large
hot & sour soup, which was really hot, my mouth was burning, by the
time I finished my meal I was sweateing, nose was running like a river
and after a couple of hours my ears were popping and uclogging. Next day
I had more of it, and ears finally got perfectly fine, no running nose
no congestion, no nothing. Who would have though.

By the way I also have a deviated septum, had my tonsils removed when I
was a kid, and lots and lots of illnesses with ears, so I was really
surprised that something simple like a hot spicy soup could make the
trick.

You can use these massage techniques when you are in pain (pain from ear infection) and also after if your ear get clogged up and/or to avoid the ears to clogged up when you have cold or allergies.

You can't really do it wrong when it comes to massage. Just keep in mind that the idea is to break up any mucous and allows the fluid in your ear to drain.

Massage for Clogged Ears

Massaging your ear can help keep the Eustachian tube open. Using gentle pressure, draw a line along the back of the ear and down the back of the jawbone. Gently push and release the flap of skin in front of the ear several times.

You can also massage your ears by placing the fleshy part of your palm, just belong your thumb, over your ear, and rotating the ear in all directions.

Here is another version from a someone at http://forums.naturalparenting.com.au

Hi Bethany, I just wanted to second Evesmum's advice. In a hot,
steamy shower massage the sinuses on the affected side of your face
(you hear and feel the fluids moving) and put your pinky finger deeply
in your ear and gently 'pump' the eardrum until you feel some relief.
At the same time, as you massage down your neck as Evesmum suggested,
move your jaw and stretch your head/neck in all directions. You will
eventually feel a release of the trapped fluids and be able to breath
through your nose. Do it at repeated intervals during the day as well
to ensure the fluids don't settle and trap again. I think combining
this with the onion therapy will do the trick.

Hope you're feeling better!

Self-Massage Techniques

Reducing sinus pressure and fluid in the ear from colds, allergies and sinus issues

This video is great for plugged ears- it's self massage - so you can do it as you watch it. If you are feeling pressure from your cold symptoms and plugged ears, this could help. The video presents Heather Wibbels, a massage therapist. She made a really helpful video using lymphatic drainage massage technique to relieve sinus pressure.

Usually I suggest people do this 2-4 times a day for about a week to get everything moving. If there's an underlying cause generating the fluid accumulating in the ears, you'll want to check with your doctor to get it completely resolved. This will move out the fluid that accumulates, but won't stop it from being created by the body!
