[…] of an individual comes down immediately following a stellar performance. But, that’s because of regression to mean, not due to your innocuous praise. When you praise someone the right way, they try extra hard next […]

Dear James, I have used your narrative for my Quality Assurance students for about five years.
A few years back, when I was teaching this subject to my students, this story popped into my head, and I decided to google whether anyone had the same line of thoughts as me. I was shocked that you have already published this idea and started using your ready-made explanation.
I have another parable in which aliens attack Earth, they walk on two legs like humans, and the average height is 195 cm; my students guard small communities in a sniper position and see a person walking with a hoodie. The laser shows them that the "person" is 190 cm; I ask them if they should shoot the walking to their community person or keep him alive, knowing that if it was an alien and got into their compound, there will be no time to react to his lethal weapons.

Maz, probably more to do with individual cognitive power, I am fascinated by ants, termites and the like, collective intelligence, they will most likely outsurvive the human race....and to your question, be more ant, less human, perhaps that's the answer to the question
