The Unfinished Works Collection: Morris & Co. x The Huntington

Few names in design history resonate as strongly as William Morris. Known as the father of the Arts and Crafts Movement, Morris created timeless patterns that celebrated craftsmanship, nature, and artistry. Now, more than a century later, a new chapter of his story unfolds with The Unfinished Works Collection - a collaboration between Morris & Co. and The Huntington Library, based in San Marino, adjacent to my hometown of Pasadena! It has been more than a century since the world has seen a new Morris design. The Unfinished Works Collection brings Morris designs to life once again.

Last month I had the opportunity to view The Unfinished Works Collection at The Huntington. The presentation was led by Claire Vallis, Design Director of Sanderson Design Group (the parent company of Morris & Co.), and Lisa Montague, CEO of Sanderson Design Group. Hearing them share the story behind the collection and the creative process that brought it to life was both inspiring and insightful.

The Morris & Co and The Huntington Collaboration

The Huntington holds one of the most significant William Morris archives in the world, and the largest outside the UK. With thousands of works ranging from textiles to stained glass sketches to manuscripts, the institution recognized an opportunity to share these designs beyond its galleries. Partnering with Morris & Co. and its parent company, Sanderson, The Huntington launched an almost two-year initiative to reimagine William Morris' archival sketches, unfinished works, and rare patterns as fabric and wallpaper for today’s interiors.

How did the William Morris Archives end up at The Huntington?

After William Morris' death in 1896, John Henry Dearle took over the reigns as art director at Morris & Co until his death in 1932. Morris & Co went into receivership in the 1940s, and at that time, the archives were broken up. The original wood blocks and first prints of the wallpaper were retained by Morris & Co while the stained glass studies, manuscripts, Kelmscott Press publications, work in progress and sketches, much of which was John Henry Dearle's work, went to Dearle's family. Sanford Berger, a trained architect, and his wife Helen Berger, based in Northern California and ardent Morris collectors acquired the archive from the Dearle family via a San Francisco dealer in the 60s. The Bergers continued to add to their collection for nearly 4 decades, and in that time amassed the largest private William Morris archives outside of the UK.

Before Sanford's death, he sold the collection of nearly 2500 works to The Huntington for $5.5M in 1999. Since then, The Huntington has added to the collection. In addition to the museum collection, which consists of sketches and artwork, there is a large collection of book plates in the library from Kelmscott Press, founded by Morris in 1891. Kelmscott Press honored the ideals of the Arts and Crafts Movement by bringing beauty back to books - creating art in both the written word as well as the presentation. There is also a large archive of stained glass sketches, and a Morris stained glass window that sits in The Huntington Museum.

About the new collection: The Unfinished Works Collection

The Unfinished Works Collection currently includes 26 newly developed designs, with a total of 50 projected at completion. This new release will add 50 patterns to the 250 already in circulation.

The Berger's acquisition of sketches came complete with handwritten notes, some intended for carpets. Designers then translated these works into borders, embroideries, jacquards, and complementary stripes.

Each design was created as authentically as possible, following the methods William Morris himself would have used. Morris & Co. designers redrew the patterns to place them into repeat, focusing on the symmetry that is instantly recognizable as Morris. The design team derived the color palette directly from the Morris archive, spectro-matching hues to ensure authenticity. They then repainted the patterns with the original William Morris palette to maintain historical accuracy.

Many designs were carefully adjusted in scale to integrate seamlessly into modern interiors while preserving their historic integrity. This balance of authenticity and adaptability allows the collection to honor Morris’s legacy while remaining relevant for today’s homes. The result is a series of fabrics and wallpapers that carry the unmistakable spirit of William Morris, yet introduce fresh patterns and interpretations unique to this collection.

After I viewed the presentation of the new collection, I hopped on a golf cart and took a trip to the archives. There I viewed the original work from which the 50 new patterns were derived. It was surprising to see how small the original designs were. In some, I would imaging needing a magnifying glass to paint the intricate details.

There are 26 new patterns and a variety of colorways that comprise this initial launch of The Unfinished Works Collection. The Morris team was responsible for naming each new pattern. I recently learned an interesting fact: William Morris always named his designs after the smaller element being presented. Morris & Co used the same approach to name these newly minted designs! Below is a glimpse of some of the new designs:

• CORNFLOWER

John Henry Dearle, the successor to William Morris, designed "Cornflower". His initials and notes appear in the margin confirm that he was the designer.

I must say that I'm partial to the Lemon/Sage colorway below. The subtle color combination keeps the details hidden at first glance. The longer you look, the more the design’s intricacy reveals itself.

Scrolling Tulip was originally designed for a carpet, that was not in repeat. The Morris & Co. creative team translated the carpet design into a repeatable pattern and included symmetry. This process kept the pattern authentic to William Morris and adapted the design for modern use.

To appreciate “Daisy and Oak Warp Print” and “Oak and Blossom,” you must understand their handcrafted process. The warp is first printed. The warp consists of vertical yarns stretched under tension, giving the fabric its structural strength.
Next, artisans weave the weft - the horizontal yarns - through the printed warp. This interaction of yarns creates the soft, fuzzy movement across the design. If you know ikat weaving, the technique follows the same principle.

Oak and Blossom Print has a contrasting embroidered stripe that runs the length of the fabric and adds dimension.

Above, Oak and Blossom is coordinated with Hanover Check in Indigo/Teal. I love how beautifully the patterns complement one another.

These two fabric designs fall under the "Handcrafted" category of The Unfinished Works Collection.

William Morris designed "Chamomile", confirmed by his signature in the margin of the unfinished design at The Huntington. This early example of William Morris wallpaper uses only two colors, giving it the look of a sketch. Future iterations may add more colors to transform the work into a complete finished design.

I especially love the positive/negative effect between the two different colorways.

Persian Scroll Embroidery Involves a unique dye technique that requires several steps and utilizes a dye resist method. Different yarns are used to embroider - some cotton and some synthetic. Because of this, each yarn takes the dye differently and creates different effects. In some areas, the motifs are embroidered using a dissolvable thread that disappear once washed. Persian Scroll Embroidery also belongs to the Handcrafted category of the collection.

William Morris Fabrics and Wallpaper and Textiles: Both Archival and Contemporary

What would William Morris say about the new collection if he were alive today? I think he would likely feel extremely proud. The collection reflects the ethos of William Morris wallpaper and textiles that we know well. Familiar motifs and symmetry remain, yet the scale is more varied and the palette feels surprisingly current. Why does the color palette feel so relevant? Morris, a leader in the Arts and Crafts Movement, celebrated nature as an antidote to industrialization. Today, designers embrace biophilic design in response to technological overstimulation. This shared focus on nature explains why the collection’s palette feels both archival and contemporary.

High Point Market Recap - Spring 2025

We’re back from the 2025 Spring High Point Market in North Carolina—the largest home furnishings trade show in the world and a must-attend for anyone in the design industry. I make it a priority to attend High Point Market twice a year to stay ahead of the curve on the latest furniture and décor trends. Experiencing the products, materials, and showroom presentations in person makes a world of difference—it allows me to assess quality, scale, and nuance in ways digital catalogs simply can’t capture.

That said, I know not everyone can attend, so I always make it a point to share my key takeaways here on the blog. Whether you're a designer, homeowner, or just curious about home trends, this recap of 2025 High Point Market trends offers insight into what’s shaping the future of furniture and interior design direction.

As the owner of a retail and to-the-trade showroom, staying informed isn't optional—it’s essential. I attend to see what’s new, understand what’s next, and source pieces that will inspire. From shifts in materials and color palettes to emerging design directions, understanding the market landscape helps us better serve our clients by curating collections tailored to their specific taste level and needs.

This season, I closely followed the 2025 High Point Market trends to spot what’s gaining momentum in design. Not only did I look for current trends, but I also noted what will shape interiors in the year ahead. Interestingly, the once-ubiquitous ivory bouclé was noticeably absent—a shift I was happy to see. Whether you're a designer, shopper, or design enthusiast, these takeaways offer insight into the future of home design and decorating.

Read on for a detailed breakdown of the standout trends that defined Spring 2025 at High Point Market, from my perspective.

Feminine Touches in Spring Interiors

The 2025 High Point Market trends spanned a wide range of styles, from bold and tailored to soft and romantic. On one end, designers embraced strong, menswear-inspired looks featuring structured forms and textured fabrics. On the other, a wave of feminine, ultra-pretty designs emerged, showcasing pleated and shirred skirts, scalloped edges, and romantic florals.

Trim & Detailing: Passementerie Returns

Continuing the trend of femininity, one key observation in 2025 High Point Market trends is the growing use of trim. Designers increasingly use trim to elevate plain or budget-friendly fabrics, instantly making them feel more custom and luxurious. Trim works in countless ways. It adds polish, defines edges, and introduces subtle texture or color contrast. More importantly, trim helps fine-tune a space by adding that final, intentional layer of detail.

I especially love the whimsical use of ball fringe on small ottomans—it softens a formal space and makes it feel more approachable.

Unexpected Stripes: A Bold Twist in Upholstery

We’re so used to seeing design done a certain way that any deviation instantly catches the eye. Often, there’s a reason for tradition—it simply looks better. However, that’s not always the case. Take stripes, for example. We typically see them run vertically (up the bolt) on upholstery, following the direction of the fabric bolt. At the 2025 High Point Market, I noticed a refreshing twist: several instances of railroaded the fabric, allowing the stripes to run horizontally across the back and seat cushions. The result? A bold, modern look that felt both unexpected and intentional. Just because something is usually done a certain way doesn’t mean you can’t break the pattern—literally.

Sunbleached Terracotta: The Standout Color for 2025

Last market, Olive Green was the predominant color seen throughout the showrooms. This market, the color du jour seemed to be Sunbleached Terracotta, a color reminiscent of the faded clay rooftops and garden pots found throughout the Mediterranean. This hue blends warm, earthy undertones of burnt orange and sienna with a gentle wash of sun-faded beige, giving it a chalky, matte appearance that feels both aged and elegant - just in time for summer. Unlike its richer, more saturated counterpart, sunbleached terracotta evokes a sense of timeworn patina.

Below, the Clement coffee table by Antonia Collection showcases a unique material: flattened coconut shell blended with a durable polyester coating.
The surface is buffed to a smooth, satin finish that highlights the shell’s natural variation and texture. Notably, its warm hue echoes the sunbleached terracotta tones seen throughout the 2025 High Point Market trends. This piece beautifully combines organic materiality with modern craftsmanship, making it a standout in any setting.

Handcrafted Details and Artisanal Finishes

In today’s fast-paced world of AI and robotics-driven manufacturing, it’s refreshing to see handcrafted artistry still valued in design.
At Hickory Chair, hand-painted monochromatic florals in soft slate blue brought a delicate, feminine touch to the reeded drawer fronts of the Reed Chest. The subtle brushwork, applied with a dry hand technique, added texture and warmth that machines simply can’t replicate.

Intricate birds and floral handpainting was added to a hand-applied gold leaf ground. The painting can also be tailored to a client's particular aesthetic - with a different motif, color, or altering the existing placement.

Below right, a collaboration between Gage Designs and master craftsman Shamsian showcases a new interpretation of modern marquetry. Marquetry is the art of creating decorative patterns by inlaying different types/color of wood veneer. It is an intricate and time consuming process that takes both time, skill and extreme patience.

Below, a hand-applied silver leaf background features floral vines and birds, painted in the style of de Gournay. Additionally, the artwork can be customized to a client's specific taste level. For example, many clients request to eliminate the birds for a more understated look.

Menswear-Inspired Wool and Tweeds

In recent months, I have seen a renewed interest in wool - nature's original performance fabric. Before there was Crypton, Alta, Inside Out, and Sunbrella, there was wool. The naturally occurring oils in the wool (lanolin) repels liquids and stains, making it a smart choice for upholstery.

While I’m highlighting the wool tweeds spotted at High Point Market, it’s worth noting their influence beyond upholstery. Menswear-inspired textures like wool tweed are also appearing in wallcoverings, adding texture and subtle pattern to interiors.

Welt Trim Makes a Statement

Contrasting welt trim was definitely having a moment the Spring 2025 High Point Market. Traditionally used to highlight the lines and silhouette of a furniture piece, this detail—often cut on the bias—is now showing up in more unexpected ways. One standout example was a headboard and bed rails featuring a double welt, adding a distinct visual layer that set it apart from the standard upholstered options on the market.

We especially love how the contrasting welt accentuates the decorative wood frame on the chair in the bottom right by Lee Industries. While the wood detail is beautiful on its own, the welt on either side sharpens the lines and subtly elevates the overall style.

Classic British Style Influences U.S. Design

Here in the U.S., we’ve been increasingly influenced by what’s happening across the pond—especially when it comes to interiors. A clear shift toward a more traditional, English-inspired aesthetic is gaining momentum, aligning with broader 2025 interior design trends. Brands like deVOL Kitchens and William Morris have led the way, each telling a rich, storied narrative through craftsmanship and pattern.

Now, British brands like Sanderson and William Yeoward are continuing that tradition, offering timeless pieces that feel both classic and fresh. After visiting the Pasadena Showcase House, I can confidently say that the charm of the skirted sink is officially back—a detail we can thank the English for reintroducing with such effortless, classic and cozy style.

2025 Pasadena Showcase House Design Inspiration

A little over a week ago, I had the privilege of previewing the 2025 Pasadena Showcase House before it opened to the public.
Over the years, I’ve participated as a designer for five previous Pasadena Showcase Houses. However, before designing, I first covered the Showcase House right here on the blog. Now, I’m going back to my roots and sharing the trends I’m seeing in this year’s home.
As a result, visitors can leave with real takeaways they can incorporate into their own spaces.

THE GARDENS: 2025 Pasadena Showcase House

No other Pasadena Showcase House garden has touched me quite like this year’s. Perhaps it’s the deep history embedded in the landscape—originally envisioned by Katherine Bashford, one of California’s pioneering female landscape designers. In researching her background, I discovered that she attended both Poly and the Otis Art Institute—schools I also attended before I got my start in interior design.

It’s only fitting that my friend Chia-Ming Ro of Coastal Homestead—also a talented female landscape designer—created the Bauer Parterre Potager, a stunning showcase of form and function. This thoughtfully designed space features two mirror-image formal gardens, each offering a unique purpose. On one side of the central fountain lies a seasonal edible garden, brimming with herbs, leafy greens, and other kitchen-friendly plants. On the opposite side, a matching garden is dedicated to vibrant cut flowers, filled with native and drought-tolerant blooms that celebrate California’s natural beauty. Together, the gardens form a harmonious blend of beauty and utility.

TimothyJohnLA's Fountain Garden Court consists of a variety of plantings and ornamental grasses to mimic the gentle spray of the water in the fountains that they complement. The thoughtfully designed fountain garden also incorporates the work of Rob Homsy Studio and a series of sculptires called No mud, no lotus

Ancient Egyptian depictions of lotus blossoms inspired the design of No Mud, No Lotus. The vertical stacks allow designers to rearrange them to best suit each unique site.

Zen Garden

Just beyond the family room lies the Zen Garden—a serene retreat designed to offer a moment of calm amidst the everyday bustle. GardZen Studio embraced a minimalist approach, using the existing water feature and a thoughtful placement of grass, gravel, and greenery to evoke a sense of balance and harmony. Though restrained in palette and form, the garden makes a powerful impact, encouraging reflection. It’s a space that gently reminds us to pause, breathe, and reconnect.

Last but not least, I found a garden view—though not officially assigned to a designer—especially compelling. Tucked between the motor court and the Carriage House is a quiet cluster of orange trees. I’m not certain whether they’re original to the estate—perhaps remnants of the historic orange groves that once blanketed Pasadena—or more recent plantings. Either way, they carry a nostalgic charm, evoking a simpler, more timeless moment in Pasadena’s past.

Sourcing and incorporating vintage pieces has long been part of our design approach, adding timelessness and character to each space. Recently, I've seen a surge in its popularity for several reasons: a growing emphasis on sustainability through reuse and recycling, a renewed appreciation for heirloom pieces that tell a story, and, more practically, the impact of current tariffs affecting both imported and domestic product using imported components.

Plaid and Stripes...and Checkerboard floors

Plaid and stripes have been making a comeback for the past year. Perhaps it is the shift back to traditional design, which I have seen dominating the design scene lately? Checkerboard floors have also seen a resurgence. The checkerboard floor at the entry was existing and other designers followed suit by including the classic design element oftentimes seen in traditional English homes. And guess what - much of the design in this year's Pasadena Showcase House reflects a classic English aesthetic.

I especially loved how Ashley Marie Design incorporated a plaid mosaic in her laundry room design. It truly reflects a modern take on a traditional design.

Wall Murals - Flowers and Trees

Throughout the home, floral and tree motifed murals appear in abundance, adding a sense of organic beauty to many of the rooms. One of the most striking interpretations was by Sukeena Design Studio, whose stylized Art Nouveau floral blooms seemed to cascade gracefully from above. To bring this vision to life in the Young Lady’s Suite, she collaborated with the talented team at Hattas Studios, capturing the essence of Art Nouveau with elegance and imagination.

The difference between a wall mural and wallpaper (handpainted or even digitally printed) is that it doesn't repeat. It flows throughout a room, is engineered so that limbs and important features are not cut off by windows or door openings. It is tailored to fit the space. It is usually purchased in panels rather than rolls.

Another standout was Shari Tipich’s ceiling mural, which beautifully complements the architectural moulding, which she added to the ceiling of her outdoor portico. Each element was meticulously hand-painted in her studio before being carefully installed on-site, showcasing both craftsmanship and attention to detail.

Designer Maria Videla of The Art of Room Design opted to use a digitally printed wallpaper mural where she played with scale and placement so that the motifs are perfectly positioned and proportioned to the walls. Notice how the mirror above the fireplace is perfectly situated between the branches. This did not happen by chance - it is the result of a detail oriented and skilled designer.

DETAILS: PASADENA SHOWCASE HOUSE 2025

Nothing makes a house more cohesive than details that recur throughout the home. Even though the 2025 Pasadena Showcase House had 24 interior designers and 8 exterior designers, details were repeated throughout the home. Each designer has a different style, but the recurring details provided continuity and made for a cohesive house, regardless of the style.

We love how metal shelving and sink legs are used throughout the home to add a modern touch of metal while still using shapes that play well with the traditional lines in the home. Additionally, the metallic elements bring a subtle “bling” that elevates the overall design. Personally, I’m partial to metal shelving and legs since they are top sellers in our showroom. Moreover, they can be customized in a variety of finishes to suit any style or color palette. Even better, metal shelving can be configured to fit uniquely shaped or tight spaces with ease.

Layered Rugs

We've been big fans of layering a neutral sisal, jute or seagrass underneath an antique rug. Antique rugs can be expensive - especially larger size rugs. Putting a layer underneath the antique helps bring down the cost while still covering the floor underneath. Moreover, it helps define certain areas in the room and the texture makes the room feel cozy.

Passementerie - trimmed to perfection

I loved the variety of decorative trim that was used throughout this year's home. Tape trim, tassel fringe, fan edge trim - so many types of trim were shown. Some on the leading drapery edge, others as borders on table skirts and pillows. It's all about the details....and judging by what I just saw at High Point Market this past week (more on that on a soon to come blog post) we'll be seeing trim used in lots of different ways to spice up our spaces.

Double Bullnose Edge profiles

Pasadena is very traditional, so the typical homeowner in the area usually opts for an ogee edge when doing an edge profile for a countertop. In recent years, there has been a shift to a more modern eased or polished edge, but that is still a stretch for some.

This is why I was surprised to see an uber-modern doubled bullnose edge profile, which has been making the rounds on the trade show circuit. I saw quite a few double bullnose edge profiles both at Salone del Mobile in Milan and more recently at KBIS, the Kitchen and Bath Industry Show in Las Vegas.

However, even a traditional home such as the Bauer Estate, this double bullnose edge profile didn't look out of place. Instead it brought a breath of fresh air to the historical features in the home. I hope that homeowners take the cue and realize that you CAN mix modern elements into a traditional home.

Skirted sinks have been having a moment in the world of interior design, so it is no surprise that they would make an appearance in several spaces in this year's Pasadena Showcase House. It brings a little whimsy and is the perfect solution when you are on a limited budget and also have limited space.

Wire Mesh Door Fronts

One standout detail we love is the use of wire mesh door fronts. Unlike glass, wire mesh eliminates glare and unwanted reflections. In addition, it introduces texture and depth, subtly filtering the view of cabinet contents while still allowing for visibility and airflow.

Moreover, wire mesh adds a layer of architectural interest that complements a range of styles—from traditional to modern cabinetry. That said, the one trade-off to keep in mind is the inevitable dust.

DESIGNERS IN THEIR SPACES

To begin with, there’s nothing I enjoy more than capturing a designer in their element—it’s where their creativity truly shines. On the flip side, the exception is when I’m the one in front of the lens, which I absolutely dread. Even so, it’s important to recognize that few people truly understand the amount of work involved in both designing and executing a space. Modernism Week - Palm Springs

Last month I made my annual trek to Palm Springs for Modernism Week. What is Modernism Week? It’s a celebration of midcentury art, design, and architecture and has been held annually for almost the last 20 years. One of my favorite things to do during Modernism Week is to tour the many homes open to the public. Each year, there are “Featured Homes” that have been restored or reimagined. Often, the designers team up with sponsors to showcase products throughout the homes. Think of it as influencer marketing: brands gain visibility, designers get exposure, and homeowners benefit from sponsored upgrades. It’s a win/win.

THE WEST HOUSE

The West House, named after its previous owner, Adam West, was originally built in 1954 and later remodeled by famed architect Albert Frey. This year, Michelle Boudreau Design took the reins and gave the home a fresh transformation for Modernism Week 2025. Showcased as one of the year’s “Featured Homes,” the residence honors its architectural roots while pushing the design forward. Textured curves, natural stone, and bold forms nod to Frey’s aesthetic. Inside, the palette of warm white oak adds comfort and richness throughout the space.

The West House is located in Old Las Palmas—one of Palm Springs’ most iconic neighborhoods—and served as a getaway for Adam West, best known as the original “Batman.” It’s only fitting that this stunning renovation carries his name.

THE WEST HOUSE - living spaces

From the street, the home presents a clean, modest facade. But as you make your way up the walk, the drama begins to unfold. The front entrance is tucked mid-lot on the side of the home, creating a sense of discovery. A peaceful water feature welcomes visitors before arriving at the full-glass front door, where a black Batman insignia sits front and center—a subtle tribute to Adam West.

Inside, layered textures and architectural detailing define the living spaces. Fluted and reeded surfaces in various scales create visual rhythm. Warm white oak meets cool gray-veined marble for a mix of earthy and elegant. The showpiece? A custom built-in entertainment wall that feels as functional as it is stylish, with perforated doors, slanted shelving, and a dedicated spot for the record player.

THE WEST HOUSE - guest quarters

In the guest spaces, a strong geometric theme runs through the artwork, tile, wallcoverings, and upholstery. The repetition of shape and line brings consistency and a unifying force to each room.

The bedrooms are wrapped in textured grasscloth, bordered with half-round trim that creates an elegant paneled wall. It’s a refined detail that adds both depth and texture to the guest suites.

THE WEST HOUSE PRIMARY SUITE

The palette and finishes from the main living areas continue into the primary suite, ensuring a seamless visual transition. Fluted plaster, white oak, and natural textures carry through, but with a twist. Soft sage is added to the color story, adding a calm, refreshing, spa-like feel to the space.

Just like in the living room, the custom built-ins feature large-scale perforated door fronts. It’s a smart design callback that ties the home together.

The West House Kitchen

The kitchen is defined by beautifully crafted rift-sawn white oak cabinetry. Overscale perforated cabinet fronts add an unexpected design twist. The light stone countertops and full backsplash keep the space airy and open.

Above the Monogram professional range, a fluted plaster range hood makes a bold impact. Below, terrazzo flooring with large aggregate gives the space texture and depth. Mixed-metal finishes—from brass hardware to matte black fixtures—bring it all home with a modern, elevated touch.

Dining Room

The matte black elements from the kitchen carry over into the dining room, helping to ground the space. Together, the black accents create contrast and continuity.

The West House - Back Yard

We visited The West House on a picture-perfect February day. The skies were clear, the sun was shining, and the palm trees swayed gently over the pristine backyard. A sparkling pool and spa created the ultimate Palm Springs escape. But our favorite detail? The putting green—a playful yet practical touch that every spacious desert yard should have.

The West House was thoughtfully redesigned that honored the past but with today's modern amenities. I really enjoyed exploring the house and soaking in all the details. There were so many details - something that every interior design like myself find endless amounts of inspiration.

Heimtextil 2025 Trends : A Glimpse into the Future of Textiles with Alcova

Heimtextil 2025, held earlier this year, showcased the latest innovations and trends in the textile industry. One of the highlights was Alcova's curated TrendSpace, which explored the theme of "Future Continuous." This innovative exhibit examined how current trends regenerate ideas from the past.

Alcova, based in Milan, Italy and founded by Valentina Ciuffi and Joseph Grima, is a renowned platform for independent and forward-thinking designers, companies, institutions, and researchers who are shaping the future of design. Each year during Salone del Mobile (and for the last two years at Design Miami) Alcova assembles the key movers and shakers defining today's design culture by exhibiting their groundbreaking work related to living spaces, products, systems, materials, and technological advancements.

Alcova's Unique Approach

Heimtextil 2025 witnessed a fresh perspective in its trend curation, with Alcova bringing its distinctive vision to the forefront. Eschewing conventional approaches, Alcova curated this year's Trend Space with a powerful emphasis on sustainable and regenerative practices within the textile industry. This wasn't just about eco-friendly materials; Alcova delved into the very heart of textile innovation, showcasing textiles crafted from unconventional fibers or produced through groundbreaking, unconventional processes. The exploration extended beyond materials, as they also investigated the profound meanings embedded within color, even going so far as to assign names to hues to better articulate the concepts they represent.

Alcova - Robotic Installation

A robotic installation created by Swiss based AATB-Practice for Non-Industrial Robotics was installed in the center of the exhibit. The installation took on an identity of its own. A one armed robot played with fabric, and brought an additional dimension to the project by showcasing a more playful side of technology.

The Three Themes of "Future Continuous"

1. Regenerative

Showcased regenerative practices in contemporary textiles.
Emphasized the importance of touch and a return to traditional approaches.
Natural colors like sky, sand, and earth tones.

Above, this textile from Antonio Salgado & Ca has a fiber content that is 90% cotton and 10% pineapple and is unique as it utilizes a material that is normally thrown away.

2. Radically Structured

Explored the reimagination of production processes.
Showcased dynamic forms and patterns that evoked glitches and fragmented lines.
Emphasized traceability and sustainability.
Drew inspiration from industrial processes and recycling.

Made in Indonesia by PT Ateja Tritunggal, the textile above is completely biodegradable. Fertilizer is built into the textile and helps in the degradation of material once it is no longer used, taking into account the environmental impact throughout the textile's entire lifecycle.

3. Naturally Uneven

celebrates the beauty of imperfection.
features natural, unbleached and naturally faded colors.
highlights the use of natural fibers and old methods.

Natural Uneven' explores the shift in appreciation from the perfectly machine-made products of the industrial era to the beauty of the uneven and imperfect. This concept embraces natural, unbleached, and naturally faded colors.

In the past, fading often rendered fabrics unusable. 'Naturally Uneven' utilizes pre-bleaching and dyeing techniques that mimic natural aging. This approach can extend a textile's lifecycle, as imperfections are embraced and do not necessitate decommissioning.

THE "Future Continuous" COLOR PALETTE

The color palette Alcova selected was created as a result of conversations between experts in the field, and the result a reflection of how colors carry meaning. For "Future Continuous" Alcova assigned names to colors that convey their meaning - partly as an experiment to see how these names will infiltrate the industry.

Well, I just attended the Kitchen and Bath Industry Show (KBIS), held annually in Las Vegas. This year was my 12th year attending, but it was different—I was tapped by the NKBA (National Kitchen and Bath Association) to judge the Best of KBIS awards. Each year, exhibitors submit their latest and most innovative products with hopes of winning the best in their category or Best in Show. I’ve written about kitchen and bath trends in the past, but this year, I had the opportunity to write from a different perspective.

This year, one of the categories I judged was Statement Kitchen—the best new kitchen products designed to make an impact. While judges reviewed all submissions in December, only a select few made it to the finals. On the first day of KBIS, we visited each finalist to evaluate their products in person before deliberating and selecting the Gold and Silver winners. Below, I’m sharing the top statement kitchen products of KBIS 2025, and I’ll cover additional categories in upcoming posts.

Best Statement Kitchen Products – Winners

Gold Winner: Vera Deluxe Workstation Kitchen Sink – TopZero

Let’s cut to the chase. The Gold Winner in the Statement Kitchen category was the Vera Deluxe Workstation Kitchen Sink by TopZero. CUBE - Brown Jordan Outdoor Kitchens

The CUBE Outdoor Kitchen by Brown Jordan brings indoor European kitchen styling outdoors. Designed in collaboration with Daniel Germani and Luca Nichetto, the modular system integrates unique shapes, colors, and materials for a contemporary aesthetic.

Pull the doors open to reveal what looks like wood drawer boxes and drawer organizers. The soft close, stainless steel doors are painted to look like wood but are outdoor rated and built to withstand the elements.

Designer and Brown Jordan Outdoor Kitchens Creative Director Daniel Germani showed the judges CUBE's many features. We had to remind ourselves a few times that we were looking at an outdoor and not an indoor kitchen. The powder coated "wood" drawer boxes looked shockingly real.

Final Thoughts on KBIS 2025 Statement Kitchen Products

This year, the Statement Kitchen category received many incredible submissions, but I also noticed several outstanding products on the show floor that weren’t entered into the competition. Exhibitors should recognize that “you have to be in it to win it”—the exposure and recognition from an award-winning product can significantly impact brand growth.

I hope that in the future, exhibitors large and small realize that the spotlight can change the trajectory of a product or company. There are several products that I wouldn't have seen on my own had I not been a judge.

Selecting the finalists and winners was no easy task, but I am thrilled to congratulate this year’s Best of KBIS award recipients. Each product makes a bold statement in the kitchen through innovative functionality, high-end design, or cutting-edge technology.

World-renown designer and architect, Patricia Urquiola, presented her design installation for Heimtextil 25/26, at the show’s opening press conference, this past week. Joining Patricia to open the Heimtextil 2025 installation was Detlef Braun, Member of the Executive Board of Messe Frankfurt.

A Visionary Collaboration: Patricia Urquiola and Heimtextil Join Forces

"Among-us" celebrates togetherness and the creation of new connections. The installation fosters a sense of community and shared experience. The partnership between Patricia Urquiola and Heimtextil was two years in the making and every detail was executed to perfection. To create the holistically designed space, collaborative partners. Patricia Urquiola brought in partners Kvadrat, Moroso, and cc-Tapis and more, to lend their expertise. These partners helped create a space that offers a glimpse into the future of textile design for hospitality and contract markets.

Exploring "among-us": Immersive Textile Design

Urquiola orchestrated a playful color palette, shapes, and contrast of textures for Heimtextil 2025. The result is a space that is fresh, innovative and feels reflective of the future of textile design. When approaching the perimeter of the installation, you are presented with a lilac and contrasting, large-scale bright orange grid. The overall effect is a forward-thinking vision of textile design.

The installation invites exploration, showcasing the designer's collaboration with various trade partners. Each partner brings a unique expertise, enriching the overall experience.

Playful, unpretentious, and inviting, the installation explores the possibilities. Possibilities in textiles as well as relationships. Relationships between materials, collaborators, and between people and how they use the space.

More Than Just Seating: Modular Design Encourages Interaction and Activity

During my time at Heimtextil 2025, I took some downtime and spent part of the afternoon in one of the Moroso modular seating lounges. (Tired legs are definitely a thing when you're doing 20k+ steps at a trade show!) There, I personally observed people's interactions with the space and how they used it. I expected people to sit for a moment to regroup and then move on, but that was only one of the scenarios I saw.

In one seating area, I observed a woman working on a computer with her papers spread around her. Another woman situated herself next to the connected modular table, where she placed her snack. Then there were two unrelated people sleeping back-to-back on opposite ends of a chaise; one of them was sound asleep and snoring heavily! A couple eventually claimed the coveted chaise spot, and I witnessed a man relaxing and basking in the attention while his female companion stroked his head and ran her fingers through his imaginary strands of hair. It was fun playing voyeur for the afternoon!

This is also why I am a fan of modular seating in a public setting – it invites a variety of activities, and people use it well.

Patricia Urquiola's Heimtextil 2025 installation was a truly refreshing addition to the show. Her collaborative approach, bringing together designers and vendors to explore the future of textiles, offered a compelling vision for the industry. Hopefully, Heimtextil will continue to showcase such innovative installations in future editions, providing essential context and inspiration for the evolution of textile design.

Recently I was invited to visit Roland DGA's Southern California office, on the suggestion of my longtime friend, Laurie Laizure of the Interior Design Community. I spent the day with Laurie, the Roland DGA team, and several design leaders from around the country, to learn about the future of printing, wallpaper, and Dimense's newest printer, Dimensor S.

Dimense -New Digital Printing Technology

Dimense is a revolutionary digital printing technology that adds 3D structure to prints. Originally founded in Lithuania, the company was recently acquired by Roland DGA. With their resources Dimense's innovative technology is poised to disrupt the surface art industry, which includes custom textured wallpaper. Dimense utilizes water-based latex inks and a unique "structural ink" to create stunning 3D effects. This single-pass system efficiently prints CMYK colors and also adds the structural element in a single pass, streamlining the production process.

The first part of the day was spent in the "classroom" at the Orange County Museum of Art, learning about Dimense Dimense's origin, its technical specifications, and the possibilities this new printing technology brings to the table.

Eco-Friendly Custom Textured Wallpaper

A true disruptor in the digital printing world, this revolutionary technology, offers a sustainable approach to creating custom textured wallpaper. Utilizing water-based inks and PVC-free media, Dimense ensures a biodegradable and environmentally friendly product. The company controls the entire ecosystem - printer, media and ink so they can ensure that the highest standards are maintained. Unlike traditional vinyl options, Dimense materials are designed to decompose over time, minimizing their environmental impact. However, it's important to note that prolonged exposure to UV light can cause material degradation, so it is best to not be exposed to direct sunlight or the outdoor elements.

Applications and Substrates

Dimense provides so many ways to customize a space, including custom textured wallpaper, feature walls, corporate branding, trade show booths, fine and surface art - all printed on demand...and in 3D.

Dimense offers 11 substrates including suede, pearlescent, matte, silver media. I'm sure you're dying to know how the texture is incorporated. Unlike 3D printing, it doesn't involve multiple pass overs and a build up of material. The substrate consists of two layers - the backlayer is a non-woven, and the top layer is a PVC and phtalate-free EcoDeco composition layer that expands when heat is applied. Where structural ink is applied, the substrates remains flat and does not expand. Structural ink can also be applied without color to create a monotone embossed effect. Here is a sample of that effect. On the left, as printed, and on the right that is painted after printing.

Dimense is oftentimes used this way - print then paint, when creating concrete effects, as it looks so close to concrete, but without the cost... and weight.

A couple of weeks before the event, each participant was asked to submit an original 18"x 24" image to print. I sent a flat PDF file and Kitt Jones, Business Development and Co-Creation Manager at Roland DGA applied texture to my file so that the stuctural ink could print texture. This was the file I sent:

The others in the group also had their art printed, but on a variety of substrates, to show the different effects that can be achieved depending on the substrate used:

I also took the opportunity to peruse several of the custom wallpaper books on hand. One of my favorites was this Japonais mural of birds printed on a metallic gold specialty substrate. The ability to print on metallic paper is one thing but to add texture really brings the scene and material life.

Another use is to paint the "embossed" or textured paper, then to apply paint in a contrasting color to a sponge and gently wipe across so that just the high points are painted. Here is an example:

After viewing a demonstration of how to create a two-toned effect on a painted printed Media Plus substrate, each of the participants took a stab at painting. I applied metallic gold paint to a flat and firm block of styrofoam and the gently brushed it across the top layer. The gold adhered to the raised, textured areas. Here was my attempt:

The Printers

One of the most satisfying things is going behind the scenes to see how things work, and I got to do exactly that. First, we saw the Dimensor S in action.

While in the showroom, I took a look at all the other printing capabilities that are applicable to the interior design trade. It is quite interesting that seeing what is possible opens your mind to other possibilities.

Digital printing on tile

Above, this may look like a wood paneled elevator in an upscale hotel. But in reality, it is wallpaper that is digitally printed to look like wood paneling. The floor is also printed to look like a tile mosaic! So what looks like an upscale wood paneled elevator really is printed wallpaper!

With everything being so readily available online, there is no greater luxury than having something custom made, and the rise of digital printing has enabled custom printing. Not only is it on demand but digital printing has allowed wallpaper to be created in a specific shape and for a specific wall, with minimal waste. The addition of texture adds another nuance. There is no doubt that custom textured wallpaper brings depth and warmth to a space, and anything is possible. Happy New Year! It's hard to believe it's already 2025, and you know what that means? The beginning of every year marks the start of a hectic travel schedule which lasts through the first quarter. The first stop this year? Germany! Within the next two weeks, I will be returning to Frankfurt, Germany to attend Heimtextil, where once again, I will preview the latest in textile design for the home.

This year's theme,"Future Continuous" at Heimtextil Trends 25/26 will be curated by Milan-based Alcova. Their unique point of view will showcase how past trends, when revisited and reimagined, can fuel innovation and inspire new directions in home textiles. Creative director Valentina Ciuffi and architect Joseph Grima, the founders of Alcova, emphasize the vital role of language in their trend research for Heimtextil Trends 25/26.

Language is essential for comprehending trend development. It allows us to trace a trend's journey and allows us to predict its future trajectory. Heimtextil Trends 25/26 leverages the power of language to shape its direction. Through Alcova's in-depth interviews with a diverse network of designers, textile researchers, and industry leaders, their design direction at Heimtextil explores the textile industry's multifaceted impact on the world. Textiles are recognized as agents of change, and its impact reaches beyond aesthetics.

Heimtextil's 25/26 color palette, curated by Alcova and derived from their interviews, reflects the tension between tradition and innovation, and is a dynamic interplay of natural, unbleached tones and vibrant hues. In addition the names assigned to each color reflect a more holistic approach - one that ties in emotional and cultural meaning.

Trend Space

The level of effort and meticulous research invested in creating the Trend Space presentations at Heimtextil has consistently been exceptional and something I look forward to every time I attend. Trend Space has a history of setting the stage for future market trends, showcasing innovative research and forward-thinking concepts. Therefore, I am excited to attend this year's show, particularly after missing it last year. I am eager to see how the show has evolved and experience the presentation of current and future trends through the lens of Alcova's direction.

Patricia Urquiola x Heimtextil Collaboration

Alcova's curatorial direction is not the only thing to look forward to this year at Heimtextil. This year, world renown designer Patricia Urquiola will be collaborating with partners Kettal, Kvadrat, cc-Tapis, Moroso and more in an almost 7000 SF installation that will channel this year's theme of "Future Continuous"- definitely not to be missed.

Patricia Urquiola x Heimtextil marks a significant milestone. The immersive installation will provide a cohesive design experience and will set the stage, uniting innovation and sustainability. According to Olaf Schmidt, Vice President Textiles & Textile Technologies, Messe Frankfurt Exhibition GmbH. "The collaboration with Studio Urquiola further elevates Heimtextil’s strong design expertise. Heimtextil 25/26 at Messe Frankfurt

Heimtextil 25/26 takes place at Messe Frankfurt in Frankfurt am Main, Germany from January 14-17, 2025. In addition to textiles, as in past years, other key categories such as wallcoverings, window decoration, carpets/rugs, and bedding, will be showcased. If you are unable to attend this year, I will be providing coverage from the show floor, so follow me on my social channels. I'll be putting the spotlight on the theme "Future Continuous" and its coordinating color palette. While there, I will also take you through Patricia Urquiola's immersive installation. Prepare to be wowed!

Sustainability is sure to be a key focus at Heimtextil 25/26 , as it has been in past editions. Heimtextil's presentations on sustainability are like no other I have seen. For many, sustainability remains an abstract concept. However, through continued education, its importance is increasingly recognized. Through impactful visual displays, Heimtextil effectively communicates the importance of caring for the environment.
