On Tuesday, the United States Federal Communications Commission announced a ban on importing new Chinese humanoid and quadruped robots along with power inverters. The FCC notes these devices constitute “unacceptable risks to the national security of the United States or the safety and security of United States persons”. A FAQ page states the ban applies to devices weighing over 4.4 pounds and is capable of “locomotion, obstacle avoidance, navigation, or movement on the ground”, which sounds like future robot vacuums could be included in the ban. Any affected companies can apply for a waiver to continue to bring products to the US.

The UK’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) opened an investigation into Microsoft over possibly misleading customers about Microsoft 365 subscription options since incorporating Copilot. The CMA claims subscribers were given access to Copilot at no initial cost for the remainder of a subscription, then automatically moved to a higher tier when it expired. This occurred without notifying Microsoft 365 Personal and Family subscribers they had to manually switch to a ‘Classic’ plan to avoid the increased plan fees.

xAI filed suit on Monday in Minnesota Federal Court, alleging a bill that prohibits apps and websites able to created fake images of people in sexualized situations violates the First Amendment. The law, HF 1606, is set to be effective on August 1st, 2026. Minnesota Governor Tim Walz responded to the suit on X, commenting “See you in court, creep.”

The Financial Times reports Google Deepmind dismantled the team running the Nobel Prize-winning AI system AlphaFold. AlphaFold began development in 2018 and worked to predict protein sequences, enabling faster drug discovery, vaccines, and structural changes in proteins associated with Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. Google reassigned key members of the team, and several had previously left Google. DeepMind confirmed to The Financial times some staff members were moved to Gemini-focused products.

As a result of European legislation mandating user-replaceable batteries beginning February 2027, Logitech announced plans to ship a user-replaceable battery version of its wireless mice to Europe, and bring a different model to the rest of the world. Logitech G’s global head Robin Piispanen told The Verge the less-repairable versions are better, saying “It’s not just the cost, you’re also adding weight”. Later in the interview, when pressed about the lack of availability for easier replacement parts, like for wear and tear on side rubber grips, Piispanen responds, “I don’t want to like, sell you a part just for you to screw it up and then be sad about it”.

On Wednesday, Russia’s Federal Security Service, known as the FSB, charged Telegram founder Pavel Durov with facilitating terrorist activity. The FSB alleges the messaging app is being used within the country by Ukrainian spies in order to plan attacks, as well as use a chatbot to recruit Russians to perform sabotage and cooperate with terrorist operations.

Warner Bros began a new test on select iPhones in the United States for a vertical video scrolling feed called HBO Max Shorts. The clips will be “powered by an AI tool built in-house, which helps human editors select and verticalize content by using machine learning algorithms”. Content is planned to be customized to a user’s taste and watch history to push recommendations on what to watch next.

NASA reports a Katalyst Space robot launched for a rescue mission for the The Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory is currently tumbling out of control following a series of failures. The mission for the Katalyst multi-armed robot aimed to grab and boost the telescope to return it to a stable orbit, allowing it to continue operations beyond the expected lifespan. Katalyst have instructed the rescue bot to begin a series of burns to correct after the failures and “are seeing the intended effect. TechCrunch obtained a statement from Katalyst, saying “this remains an active mission, and we continue to move forward with plans to rendezvous with Swift.”

On Monday Nvidia announced new coalition called the Open Secure AI alliance with over 30 inaugural partners, including IBM, Cisco, Microsoft, Dell Technologies, Palantir, OpenClaw, Salesforce, Adobe, Cloudflare, and SAP, among others. Nvidia’s announcement says the Open Secure AI Alliance’s mission is “to ensure defenders everywhere have open, frontier tools they can trust and control.”

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reports Apple pushed back the launch of the company’s first smart glasses from the early 2027 target to debuting at June’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WDC), with the glasses made available to the public by the end of 2027. The delay is reportedly concerning the current image of smart glasses being seen as, colloquially, “pervert glasses”. Gurman says Apple is expected to publicly emphasize features like on-device processing and the absence of facial recognition.

Mark Gurman’s newsletter Power On also notes Apple is in “late-stage testing” of wifi and cellular versions of the Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4, though a new Apple Watch SE model is not currently planned for 2027. In an exclusive, The Wall Street Journal’s sources claim Nvidia is in talks to provide an approximately $250 billion backstop for OpenAI for a data center project. The sources say the backing allows OpenAI to lease a 10-gigawatt project being developed in Ohio with Softbank’s energy subsidiary. The Wall Street Journal notes “OpenAI has no investment-grade credit rating as an unprofitable private company” and that Nvidia’s backstop would enable the company to negotiate more favorable terms.

On Monday China’s Ministry of Commerce stated the country would take “all necessary measures” if the US government continues to allege Chinese AI companies used American models for training. The statement recommends a halt to sanction threats as part of a “smear campaign”. The Ministry of Commerce statement also alleges American AI companies have distilled Chinese models, though did not name any specific examples.

Roku confirmed the previously expected device price hikes to Engadget, with the Roku Ultra now costing $150, up from $100. The Streaming Stick 4K rose from $50 to $80. The Streaming Stick Plus went from $40 to $60. And the basic Roku stick’s price increased from $30 to $40. A Roku representative told The Desk the price jump was a “tough decision” made to address shortages in memory and other components.

9to5Google spoke with Google’s Vice President of Devices and Services Shakil Barkat about the higher Pixel 11 prices due to “supply realities”. Barkat referenced a Morgan Stanley report showing 1 gigabyte of RAM jumped from $2.80 in 2025 to $12 in 2026. Barkat also mentioned there is a “dedicated effort” to lower memory requirements in Android “while maintaining a great user experience”. The base Pixel 11 is expected to launch at $899, $100 more than the $799 Pixel 10 launch.

TechCrunch exclusively reports Snapchat added a ‘Now Playing’ feature to share what user is a listening to in real time. After linking a Spotify account users can choose who can view listening activity, which can also be paused for 3 hours, 24 hours, or indefinitely. The feature is rolling out across regions with both Snapchat and Spotify availability, with Canada coming soon. Snap Map has more than 450 million monthly users.

The Register, passing along a vulnerability disclosure from BobDaHacker, reports the Click To Pray app — which was launched by Pope Francis back in 2019 — had been leaking user’s names and emails for months. The app and website have nearly 720,000 registered accounts as of July 2026. BobDaHacker first contacted nine Click To Pray affiliated email addresses six months ago, but received no response. As of July 24th, following some press about the lack of communication about the vulnerability, it has now been patched. There is still no official statement about the issue and no response to the disclosing party as BobDaHacker first found out it was fixed thanks to a Reddit comment. In the initial public disclosure notice BobDaHacker asks Click To Pray for a way to QUOTE “give researchers a way to reach you that doesn’t involve literally praying for a response.”

On Tuesday OpenAI posted how last week’s reported intrusion on Hugging Face was an “unprecedented cyber incident” that occurred during a test of the GPT‑5.6 Sol model alongside a model still undergoing internal testing. OpenAI’s breakdown says the model “successfully found ways to gain access to secret information that it could use to cheat the evaluation”. The Hugging Face security team and the company’s own AI agents then detected and halted the intrusion. Hugging Face’s chief executive Clément Delangue believes there was “no malicious intent” from OpenAI over the incident.

On Tuesday, France’s Parliament passed a law banning under-15s from accessing social media, a first for an EU member nation. Beginning September 1st all under-15s will be banned from creating any new social media accounts and phase 2 involves all existing social media accounts held by under-15s to be deleted on January 1st, 2027. Also included in the text is extending a ban on cell phones in class to high schools, which was already in place for primary and middle schools. The law still needs to be reviewed by France’s Constitutional Council.

Jack Dorsey’s Block announced Buzz, a new app designed to “reduce our dependency on slack and github” and Buzz is “model-agnostic, decentralized, self-sovereign, and open source”. Among the companies Block operates are Square, Cash App, and Tidal. The Buzz free desktop app is available now for Windows, Linux, and macOS. The code is also available on GitHub.

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple is preparing to launch a leasing program called ‘Apple Upgrade’ with digital payment group Klarna. Expected to launch on July 28th, the program would allow users to lease an iPhone or Apple Watch for a 24 month term, with Mac and iPad plans lasting 36 months. Some product models, like the MacBook Neo, are expected to be excluded from the program. Users sign on to a monthly subscription, can upgrade to new models during the term, and decide to keep the device or return it at the end. Bloomberg reports the Apple Upgrade program differs from the existing iPhone Upgrade Program as it will not include AppleCare.

Following a 404 Media report earlier in July, Apple has now fixed the Hide My Email vulnerability that unveiled a user’s real email address. 404 Media notes Apple was aware of the vulnerability for over a year. On July 17th PCMag covered a proposed class action suit in California over Apple’s lack of communication regarding the security flaw while continuing to charge for access to the feature. Co-founder of EasyOptOuts Tyler Murphy first discovered and communicated the security issue to Apple in June 2025, which persisted despite Apple’s claims to Murphy that the company was “looking into it”.

French music streaming service Deezer announced AI music comprised more the 50% of music uploads for the first time in the company’s history, reaching a new monthly average of 90,000 tracks. Deezer will now “take down AI-tracks used for streaming fraud, and those that haven’t been streamed for at least 6 months.” Deezer began tagging albums that include AI in June 2025; and though streams for those tracks only accounted for 1-3% of total streams overall, 85% of those were fraudulent.

Reuters reports the non-profit in charge of licensing for the intellectual property from the University of Tennessee filed suit in Delaware federal court against Anthropic, alleging patent infringement. Specifically, the suit claims Anthropic’s AI systems are violating the patents on “machine-learning technology inspired by neuroscience.” An Anthropic spokesperson responded to the suit, saying “We disagree with the allegations and intend to defend this case vigorously”.

Instagram is implementing a Replace Audio feature to let users change the in-app music selections on previously published posts, leaving existing likes and comments intact. The update is rolling out this week. This is an improvement on an update in May enabling edits to published Stories that did delete likes, reactions, and comments.

Game File reports Nintendo has requested the court dismiss a class-action lawsuit filed in April of this year which demanded Nintendo return US tariff fees to customers. In April 2025 Nintendo implemented price increases to various products as a response to US tariffs and “changes in market conditions”. In Nintendo’s filing the company says “Plaintiffs are not entitled to a rebate simply because of intervening legal developments related to tariffs” and “If a consumer did not want to pay the advertised price, they were free to abstain from purchasing the product or seek out competing products”.

Meta’s enormous AI infrastructure bill could start paying for itself. The company is reportedly discussing a two-year deal worth as much as $10 billion to supply Anthropic with computing power, potentially turning Meta into a cloud provider as well as an AI developer.

Apple circles the wagons

Apple has told roughly 40 former employees now working at OpenAI to preserve documents related to its trade-secret lawsuit. Nudify apps get an eviction notice

Zoox Recalls Robotaxi Software

On Wednesday 404 Media reported a hacker revealed the AI music generation tool Suno scraped millions of songs and lyrics from “YouTube Music, Deezer, and Genius, as well as from the stock music libraries Pond5, Jamendo, Freesound, the International Music Score Library Project, and podcasts via RSS feeds”. Also that the hacker was able to access customer information and Stripe payment data for hundreds of thousands of users. As previously reported, Warner Music settled a lawsuit with Suno and reached a licensing agreement. Cases brought by Universal Music Group and Sony Music remain ongoing.

Also on Wednesday Suno announced a new iOS iMessage extension enabling the creation of 30 second songs from voice recordings or prompted inside a conversation without opening the app. Though, in order to work, both users must have the app installed.

OnePlus confirms the company will no longer operate in North America and Europe, with the last product remaining the OnePlus 15 from 2025. Oppo, the parent company of OnePlus since 2021, will continue to operate overseas. OnePlus products will still be available in China while Oppo sub-brand Realme will exit the Chinese market and also remain in use overseas.

On Thursday 29 countries signed an agreement to establish an international body called the World AI Cooperation Organization, to be headquartered in Shanghai. The 29 countries include 10 African and 12 Asian countries, Cuba, Brazil, Venezuela, Serbia, Belarus, Russia, and China. More details expected during the World Artificial Intelligence Conference, July 17th – 20th, in Shanghai.

On Thursday the European Commission issued two binding measures to Google under the Digital Markets Act (DMA). Google must permit equal access on Android devices to rival AI assistants at the same level as Google’s own Gemini. Google must also give third-party search engines access to search data that the Commission notes “only Google Search can collect at scale” and this will cover AI chatbots that basically act as a search function.

1Password is launching a Claude integration for Mac users to enable Anthropic’s AI agent to sign in on websites, without giving the agent the ability to see passwords or two-factor authentication codes. The feature can function across multiple websites as part of a single task to facilitate multi-step workflows. 1Password for Claude for Mac is only available to business, family, and individual plan subscribers using the desktop app and browser extension alongside the Claude desktop app and browser extension.

Hyundai Motor Group intends to acquire SoftBank Group’s remaining holdings in US robotics firm Boston Dynamics, which would bring the company fully under Hyundai’s ownership. The transaction’s value is expected to be approximately $325 to $335 million for SoftBank’s 9.9% holdings.

Visa launched the enterprise service Visa Stablecoin Platform (VSP) to issue, store, transfer, and redeem stablecoins on a Visa-managed system, which includes support for the OpenUSD stablecoin. The Visa press release shares how “stablecoin-linked cards connect crypto and stablecoin wallets to the global Visa network, allowing users to spend digital assets at millions of merchants worldwide.”

xAI is suing a South Carolina individual in a Texas federal court over misuse of the AI system to generate child sexual abuse material. The man was arrested earlier in 2026 on the charge of sexually exploiting minors. In the filing, the suit is looking to “hold Defendant accountable for his repeated, deliberate, and unconscionable violations of the xAI Terms of Service and Acceptable Use Policy through his abhorrent abuse of Plaintiff’s generative AI chatbot known as “Grok.”” Reuters reports this case is among the first to be brought against AI users over CSAM.

Google renamed NotebookLM to Gemini Notebook. The AI research assistant will remain a standalone app and now feature stronger integration with the Gemini app and Google search. Improved features include adding access for each Notebook to a secure cloud computer for writing and executing code, and adding .json and Microsoft PowerPoint as output formats. The features are available to Google AI Ultra users and Workspace business customers with AI Ultra Access and AI Expanded Access, and will be available to Pro web users over the coming weeks.
