Original Post 7/22/25:

Rakuten announced today their new credit card which card runs on the American Express network and is issued by the fintech Imprint and their banking partner First Electronic Bank.

• Direct card link
• No annual fee
• $25 signup bonus spending $500 $100 after $1,000 spend within 90 days
• Looks like there is no foreign transaction fee
• Card earnings:
  • Earn an extra 4% cash back on top of what you already earn while shopping on Rakuten’s platform of more than 3,500 stores (in-store or online). This is limited to the first $7,000 $10,000 of credit card spending each calendar year. Afterwards 1%.
  • Earn an extra 5% cash back on top of the 5% you can earn with Rakuten Dining at more than 22,000 partner restaurants. That’s a total of 10% cash back on Rakuten Dining.
  • Earn 2% cash back on Grocery and Restaurants.
  • Earn 1% cash back on all other purchases.

The move comes years after discontinuing their Synchrony Bank issued credit card which earned 3% back on Rakuten merchants with no limit.

Our Verdict

The 4% for online shopping is nice, but given the $7,000 $10,000 limit I don’t see major value there. I’m not sure how useful the Rakuten Dining program is and how it compares to other similar programs. That could be something to look into.

A positive factor to consider is that the ‘cashback’ apparently pools with your Rakuten balance. And so, if you have your Rakuten set to Membership Rewards points, you’ll get those as points which some value significantly more.

I suppose there can be some people for whom this card can make sense. It’s probably more of an edge case since it would mainly be for someone who does a lot of Rakuten Shopping and uses Rakuten Dining a lot.

Our Verdict

Limit of 35 gallons, you can fill up multiple vehicles in one transaction as well. Make sure to price compare to ensure you’re getting a good deal. Not as good as the $1 or $0.25 deals but every little bit helps.

Our Verdict

Very nice discount and widely available. Save it on your Platinum card, if you have one, since it earns 5x on flights. Many have noted that if you book out a flight in the future and cancel, you’ll bank the refund to be used for a year and thus lock in the discount.

This effectively derisks these cardholders for Chase and they are able to approve more applicants, something that cobranded partners are constantly pushing for. WSJ stated that rejection rates have been a ‘constant source of strain’ for the United partnership. 

Discussions are in the very early stages and it’s unclear if applicants would even know their debt is being carried by a different lender or if that lender would appear on the card. It’s also unclear if this would only be used for credit worthiness or would impact things like once per lifetime or 5/24 rules. 

I’ll be surprised if anything eventuates from this, it reads to me that Chase is seen to be doing something for frustrated partners. 

Not sure I really understand the strategy here from Hilton, I guess they have been getting push back from elites that status has become meaningless and this is the solution but adding a new tier after less than 12 months doesn’t seem sustainable.

Our Verdict

Wonder acquired GrubHub in late 2025 so there are GrubHub restaurants on there now. Wonder itself seems to be overpriced ghost kitchens but some people seem to think it’s OK?

This new Cardmember bonus offer is not available to either (i) current Cardmembers of this business credit card, or (ii) previous Cardmembers of this business credit card who received a new Cardmember bonus for this business credit card within the last 24 months.

Now some application pages (for example this one) state the following:

The new cardmember bonus may not be available to you if you have ever had this card. We may also consider factors pertinent to your business in determining your bonus eligibility.

I suspect we will see the newer language on all links sooner rather than later, I’m surprised it hasn’t only rolled out on some links for now. The terms do state ‘may not’ so it’s possible that the old 24 month language will mostly apply but Chase/Southwest wants some flexibility. This follows on from Chase seemingly updating the Chase 5/24 rule to 3/24 for sole props. Chase Southwest card is also offering a 80,000 point bonus currently.

Rakuten is offering up to an additional $150 when applying for a Bank of America card through its portal. Rates are as follows:

• $150 for Travel Rewards
• $75 for Customized Cash

Users that have elected to receive Membership Rewards points instead of cashback will see $0 and be ineligible to earn anything.

Affiliates can sometimes earn well in excess of $500 for a successful applicant. Normally shopping portals are forbidden from offering incentives on credit cards as other affiliate partners don’t like it. Rakuten must have negotiated this deal specially with Bank of America to get around these clauses. (We don’t use credit card affiliate links on Doctorofcredit ever.)

Rakuten launched something similar with Chase that was at one point offering $300/30,000 additional points. At launch that was a smaller bonus so it’s possible Rakuten will increase these Bank of America offers. It’s important to note that this $150/$75 is in addition to the standard sign up bonuses on these cards which are:

• Customized cash: $200 + increased cashback first year
• Travel Rewards: 25,000 points after $1,000 in spend

We’ve actually try to negotiate similar increased bonuses for our readers with card networks directly before and have always been told it’s not possible due to existing contracts with other partners (we are working on a deal that would effectively pass on any affiliate commission to a charity partner). It’s great to see that Rakuten has been able to pull this off and hopefully they can expand it.
