What is new in Data Recovery?

It’s been a while since we’ve posted here.
Work moves quickly, and sometimes the days get ahead of all of us.
But even though the blog has been quiet, the lab hasn’t been.
A lot has changed in the data-recovery world, and we wanted to share what that looks like from our side of the bench. It is amazing how quickly time flies, and storage technology changes. Almost all storage is using encryption to protect its own operating system (System Area) or data. The first 1TB drive we worked on was 4 250GB Maxtor drives, set as a RAID 0 in a Lacie Big Disk. Now, we have drives that are larger than 20TB and solid-state drives are quickly replacing all boot devices in PCs, Macs, etc. So, the evolution of data recovery must continue to keep pace with the emergence of new technology.

The rise of virtual offices and partner map pages. If you search “data recovery near me” today, you’ll see more companies than ever.
But many of those listings aren’t truly local.
They use virtual addresses and forwarding services.

For customers, that creates real uncertainty:
Who is handling the drive?
Where is it actually going?
What happens if something goes wrong?

This industry depends on trust — and when everything feels distant or anonymous, that trust becomes harder to find.

Sending a drive out to a data recovery company, is not a bad thing. The problem with virtual offices and partner locations is misrepresentation and cost. Virtual offices and partner commissions are expensive, and cost gets passed on to you.

We’ve always believed that data recovery is personal.
People deserve to know where their drive is, who’s working on it, and what the real chances of recovery are.

That’s why all recoveries are still handled right here in Tampa – St. Petersburg -Clearwater.
When you call, you speak directly with the technicians doing the work — not a script, not a call center.
Your drive stays in one lab, under one team, from start to finish.

And the work itself still requires hands-on expertise:

Repairing drives with mechanical failures

Recovering RAID-5 and RAID-6 systems after disk loss

Restoring NAS units with damaged or collapsed file systems

Rebuilding APFS and BitLocker volumes after accidental deletions

Diagnosing SSDs that fail suddenly without warning

Technology evolves, but the fundamentals remain the same: careful diagnostics, the right tools, and experienced engineers.

What We’ve Been Working On This Past Year

Even without blog updates, the recovery work has been steady. Recently we’ve seen:

RAID cases requiring stripe alignment and virtual rebuilds

SSDs reporting incorrect capacity or failing without warning

Synology and QNAP systems with multi-disk corruption

BitLocker drives with damaged metadata

Second-opinion cases labeled “unrecoverable” that turned out not to be

Every case has its own challenges, and after 30 years, that’s still what makes this work matter to us.

If You Need Help With a Failed Drive or Storage System

Whether it’s a clicking hard drive, an offline NAS, or a server that failed at the worst time, our team is here to help.

You get honest communication, clear expectations, and a local team that handles your recovery from start to finish — no outsourcing, no surprises.

And if another company told you your data couldn’t be recovered, or quoted something that didn’t feel right, it’s always worth getting a second opinion.

We’re still here, still doing the work, and always ready to help when you need us.

The Rising Threat of Ransomware in 2025 and How DTI Data Recovery Can Help

The Uptick in Ransomware Attacks

In 2025, ransomware attacks have continued to rise, posing a significant threat to businesses and individuals alike. The increasing sophistication of these attacks, driven by advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) and the emergence of new cybercriminal groups, has made ransomware a persistent and evolving menace. According to recent reports, the number of ransomware attacks has surged, with a notable increase in the total value of ransoms paid in 2024.

One of the key factors contributing to this uptick is the use of AI-powered social engineering tactics. Cybercriminals are leveraging AI to create more convincing phishing campaigns, making it easier to deceive victims and gain access to their systems. Additionally, the rise of smaller, less predictable ransomware gangs has added to the complexity of the threat landscape.

Ransomware data recovery

The Impact on Businesses

The impact of ransomware attacks on businesses can be devastating. Critical sectors such as manufacturing, healthcare, education, and energy are particularly vulnerable due to their reliance on operational continuity. The financial losses, reputational damage, and operational disruptions caused by ransomware attacks can be severe, making it essential for organizations to adopt robust cybersecurity measures.

How DTI Data Recovery Can Help Recover Your Data

In the face of this growing threat, DTI Data Recovery offers a range of services to help businesses and individuals recover their data after a ransomware attack. Here are some of the ways DTI Data Recovery can assist:

Data Recovery Methods: DTI Data Recovery has developed specialized techniques to recover data from various storage configurations, including Network Attached Storage (NAS), Storage Area Network (SAN), and RAID systems. We have successfully recovered data from multiple RAID servers, large storage arrays, and SQL databases. That has been sabotaged during a Ransomware attack.

Unique Recovery Scenarios: Each ransomware recovery scenario is unique, and DTI Data Recovery tailors its approach to the specific circumstances of each case. We have experience recovering data from complex storage environments and can piece together important files from multiple storage spaces.

Expert Advice: DTI Data Recovery advises against paying the ransom, as there is no guarantee that the decryption tool provided by the attackers will work. Instead, they recommend taking every storage space offline and shutting down to preserve the encrypted files and registry entries. This approach increases the chances of successful data recovery without paying the ransom.

Comprehensive Recovery Services: DTI Data Recovery can help recover data from backups that have been deleted, formatted, or affected by ransomware. They have the expertise to handle various recovery scenarios, ensuring that valuable data is retrieved even in the most challenging situations.

Recent Success Stories

In the first two weeks of 2025, DTI Data Recovery successfully helped two victims of ransomware recover their data. These cases highlight the effectiveness of their recovery methods and the importance of seeking professional assistance in the aftermath of a ransomware attack. The first of the two attacks data was encrypted with the Akira ransomware. The second attack was Bubka ransomware.

As ransomware attacks continue to rise in 2025, it is crucial for businesses and individuals to be prepared and take proactive measures to protect their data. DTI Data Recovery offers a lifeline for those affected by ransomware, providing expert data recovery services and advice to help mitigate the impact of these attacks. By leveraging their specialized techniques and experience, DTI Data Recovery can help you recover your data and get back on track after a ransomware incident.

Together We Rise:

In the wake of Hurricane Helene followed shortly after by Hurricane Milton, the West Coast of Florida is grappling with immense challenges. Many families are facing the heartbreaking reality of damaged homes and lives turned upside down by storm surge and wind damage. As a local business, we understand that data recovery may feel like a secondary concern amidst the pressing need for safety and shelter. Yet, we also recognize that the loss of cherished memories and vital information adds an emotional layer to the struggle we face together.

Acknowledging the Bigger Picture

First and foremost, our thoughts are with everyone affected by the hurricane. The safety of our community members and their property is paramount. The road to recovery will be long, and our focus must remain on helping each other through these trying times. For many, the loss of physical belongings is compounded by the potential loss of digital memories—photos of loved ones, important documents, and cherished moments that may feel irreplaceable. Data may be under water on a hard drive or in a submerged laptop Solid-State Drive.

The Emotional Weight of Data Loss

While the damage to homes and properties takes precedence, the emotional toll of losing personal data can be profound. Memories captured in photographs, important documents for work or school, and other digital artifacts can hold immense value. It’s entirely natural to feel a sense of grief over these losses, even when there are more pressing concerns at hand.

Steps Toward Recovery

Steps Toward Recovery

For those who find themselves in a position to consider data recovery, here are some gentle reminders on how to approach the situation:

Safety First: Before addressing any electronic devices, ensure that you and your loved ones are safe. Your well-being is the priority.

Assessing Damage: If it’s safe to do so, check your devices. If they’ve been exposed to water, do not power them on. Instead, gently dry them off and remove any batteries if possible.

Professional Help: When the time is right, consider reaching out to a data recovery service. Experts in this field understand the complexities of water damage and can help recover your data with the utmost care.

Community Resources: Remember that you’re not alone in this. Many local organizations and businesses are offering support in various forms. Whether it’s emotional support or practical assistance, we’re all here to help one another.

Supporting Each Other

As a local business, we are committed to standing by our community. We know that the journey to recovery is not just about physical restoration; it’s about rebuilding connections and supporting one another through every step. We’re here to listen, provide resources, and lend a helping hand wherever we can.

Looking Forward

In the face of such adversity, it’s essential to hold onto hope. While data recovery may seem insignificant compared to the larger challenges at hand, it’s a piece of the puzzle that can contribute to the overall healing process. Every memory, every document, holds a part of your story, and we’re here to help you preserve that story if we can.

Let’s continue to support one another as we navigate this difficult time. Together, we can rebuild not just our homes but also the fabric of our community. Stay safe, and remember: we’re in this together.

How to handle water damaged hard drives.

Please do not try to dry the hard drive. The saltwater and other contaminants will start to corrode the platter surface of hard drives. Wipe debris and excessive water off of the hard drive. Place the hard drive in a zip lock bag with a moist paper towel. This will keep the contaminants from damaging the platter surface by delaying the oxidation process. The same practice can be applied to Solid-Sate Drives SSDs and most other electronic storage devices. A full video of the process can be found below.

Data is one of the most valuable assets to individuals and businesses. Whether it’s cherished family photos, crucial business documents, or irreplaceable creative work, losing data can feel like a devastating blow. When faced with data loss, finding a reliable recovery service is paramount. But did you know that many of the search results you see on Google Maps might not be what they seem? Here’s why choosing a local data recovery company like DTI Data Recovery in Tampa, FL can save you both time and money.

The Problem with Virtual Offices

When you search for data recovery services on Google Maps, you might come across listings that appear to be legitimate businesses. However, many of these are actually virtual offices or partner locations. What does this mean for you?

Inflated Costs: Virtual offices often act as middlemen, forwarding your case to a third-party recovery service. This can significantly increase the cost of data recovery because you’re essentially paying for multiple layers of service. Local companies like DTI Data Recovery handle everything in-house, so you avoid these extra charges.

Lack of Transparency: With virtual offices, it’s harder to verify who is actually handling your data. You might end up working with a company that isn’t as experienced or equipped as you were led to believe. DTI Data Recovery’s local presence ensures you know exactly who is working on your case.

Slower Service: Virtual offices can add unnecessary delays to the recovery process. They need time to forward your case to another location, and communication can become a bottleneck. A local company like DTI Data Recovery, with its on-site facilities and direct handling of your data, can offer a faster turnaround time.

Handing your data to us in person. Many individuals and companies do not want to ship their data out, fearing further damage to the media. Tim Tebow sent his drive to us because we were the closest data recovery company he could find.

Why Choose a Local Company?

Direct Interaction: Working with a local company means you can interact directly with the team handling your data. This not only builds trust but also ensures that you receive personalized service tailored to your specific needs. DTI Data Recovery is a short drive from Tampa, Clearwater, and Sarasota, FL.

Cost-Effective Solutions: By cutting out the middleman, local companies like DTI Data Recovery offer more competitive pricing. You’re paying for the actual recovery services rather than additional administrative layers.

Accountability: When you choose a local service, it’s easier to hold them accountable. You know where they are located and can visit their office if needed. This level of transparency is often missing with virtual office setups.

Community Support: Supporting local businesses helps strengthen your community. By choosing a local data recovery service, you’re contributing to the local economy and fostering business growth in your area.

Introduction to EXSI VMFS

VMFS (Virtual Machine File System) is a critical component of VMware’s virtualization infrastructure, responsible for efficiently storing and managing virtual machine disk files (VMDKs) and related data. Understanding how VMFS stores data on disk is crucial for administrators tasked with managing VMware environments. Despite its robustness, VMFS data stores can become corrupt or damaged, leading to potential data loss. In such cases, outsourcing the recovery of corrupt or damaged data stores to a professional data recovery company is often the best course of action. In this article, we will delve into the intricacies of VMFS data storage, including its on-disk structure and magic numbers, while also exploring the reasons why professional data recovery services are recommended for handling data loss scenarios.

Understanding VMFS Data Storage on Disk:

VMFS organizes data on disk using a hierarchical structure that includes various metadata and data structures. These structures facilitate efficient storage, retrieval, and management of virtual machine files. Here’s an overview of how VMFS stores data on disk:

Magic Numbers:

VMFS uses two magic numbers to identify its file system type:

The first magic number is “4B 44 4D 56” in hexadecimal format, which appears at the beginning of the volume header.

The second magic number is “43 4F 52 50” in hexadecimal format, which appears at the end of the volume header.

These magic numbers serve as signatures that indicate to the VMware hypervisor that the storage device or partition contains VMFS-formatted data.

Volume Header:

At the beginning of a VMFS volume, there is a volume header containing essential metadata about the file system.

The volume header includes information such as the version of VMFS, the block size, the number of blocks, and the UUID (Universally Unique Identifier) of the volume.

Additionally, the volume header contains pointers to other important structures within the file system, such as the file descriptor block (FDB) and the pointer block.

File Descriptor Block (FDB):

The file descriptor block (FDB) is a critical component of the VMFS file system structure.

It contains metadata about files and directories stored on the volume, including file names, sizes, permissions, and pointers to data blocks.

The FDB is organized into a B-tree structure, allowing for efficient lookup and retrieval of file metadata.

Pointer Block:

The pointer block is another essential structure within VMFS that facilitates data storage.

It contains pointers to data blocks where file data is stored on disk.

Pointer blocks are organized into a tree-like structure, with each level pointing to lower-level pointer blocks or directly to data blocks.

Data Blocks:

All Microsoft devices ship with BitLocker encryption by default.

Some time ago manufacturers realized it was more cost efficient to integrate storage directly on the motherboard. Unfortunately, if the motherboard fails this causes your data to become inaccessible. Microsoft and Apple both automatically link to One Drive or iCloud to allow you to backup and access data from multiple devices. However, if your data was not synced or exceeded the amount of data allocated by your plan, you will not have access to it via your One Drive or iCloud account.

As a Florida based data recovery company, we have recovered data from local storms prior to hurricane Charlie. We assisted New Orleans with business and home user recovery from Hurricane Katrina. Not since then have we witnessed that scale of storm surge, until we watched Hurricane Ian make land fall in the Ft. Myers Area. Areas south such as Naples experienced tremendous storm surge.
