Apollo Dub (Original Dubplate)

noreply@blogger.com (Dub Magistrate) — Wed, 29 Aug 2012 11:37:00 -0700

Last weekend Neil Armstrong, the first human to set foot on the moon, died at the age of 82. Of the many things that amaze me about the first manned moon landing, the communications between ground control on Earth, the command module orbiting the moon, and the lunar module are particularly fascinating. I can only imagine the excitement, anxiety, nervousness, and thrill of the entire team working together moment by moment; each step taking them further into uncharted territory. Some of that comes through in their voices, and I've chosen to focus on those communications as the centerpiece of this dub.

Cosmic Awareness

noreply@blogger.com (Dub Magistrate) — Wed, 22 Feb 2012 13:18:00 -0800

This is a dub version of Chicago-based reggae band The Drastic's great tune "Cosmic Awareness." I've added my own drums, guitars, bass, dub sirens, and keyboardist Robert Reichner joins me on organ. Allen Thompkins helped with post-production.

You can find out more about The Drastics in these places:
thedrastics • http://www.thedrastics.com/ • http://www.facebook.com/thedrastics
and you can hear the original "Cosmic Awareness" here: Cosmic Awareness by thedrastics

The spoken word section of the song is a reading of an excerpt of the treaty oration of Chief Sealth (from whom Seattle takes its name and took its land) in 1854 in which he speaks about the cosmic awareness of his tribe.

You voted and Thursday is going to be the day for Dub Magistrate podcast releases. Since you have to wait *four days* until next Thursday, here's a bonus track to keep you dippin and skankin until then.

This is a dub version of Beastie Boys' "Pass the Mic" that I dubbed back in May of this year. The voiceover samples are a) an interview with a kid growing up on an LSD commune in the 1960s and b) an excerpt from a 1960s interview with Dr. Timothy Leary.
