Dulwich Hamlet have announced their pre-season line up as they begin the countdown to the return of football later this summer.

Mark Dacey has put together a competitive slate designed to repeat the preparations that would see them win their first four league fixtures last season..

Hamlet kick things off with an away trip to Jersey Bulls on Saturday July 11 who narrowly missed out on promotion to step three via the play-offs this year and so will be looking for a strong start themselves.

The Champion Hill action returns a week later with the visit of Millwall U21s with whom the club have enjoyed some sensational matches in the past, and that too will be a Saturday afternoon kick off at 3pm on July 18.

The pink’n’blues then take to the road for two tough matches against step two opposition visiting Horsham on Tuesday July 21 for a 7.45pm kick off and then Tonbridge Angels for their final road trip on Saturday July 25 at 3.00pm.

Pre-season then comes to a close back at home with the visit of Dorking Wanderers for a summer evening clash on Tuesday July 28 at 7.45pm and finally Hamlet welcome QPR U21s for a rematch of the London Senior Cup final on Saturday August 1 at 3.00pm.

Dulwich Hamlet’s new u18 team got off to a winning start last season after clinching the Kent Youth League Division One North league, and now they’re looking for their next intake of players, as chairman Ben Clasper explains:

After a dream first season in which our new Dulwich Hamlet FC u18’s team won the Kent Youth League Division One North we are back looking for the next intake of players and opening up applications for our trials which are due to take place in the week commencing Monday June 8.

 

We are inviting applications to be submitted from boys who will be in years 12 or 13 from September 2026 and who have experience playing in the Kent Youth League or the Tandridge League or have experience at county, district or academy level.

 

Please note that the application form below should be completed by a parent, guardian or responsible adult with their personal details included as well as the player’s information.

With only one side operating this year and many of our title-winning squad returning for a second year we will not be able to accommodate all applicants and so we’d like to remind players that if they are not successful in being invited to trial it is not a reflection on their ability it will be down to both limited availability and the need to fill specific positional roles within the squad..

This Sunday, 17th May, Dulwich Hamlet’s new Youth Team look to finish the season with a league title win, if they can defeat Cray Wanderers at Flamingo Park.

A draw is enough for Cray to clinch the title while the young Hamlet side know only 3 points will do as they look to finish their first season in pink & blue with silverware.

Following an early season run in the FA Youth Cup that saw them exit the competition against Erith Town, the youth side have mounted a title charge and will be league champions if they can defeat this weekend’s opponents.

The Wanderers have only suffered defeat twice this season against Bromley and Peckham Town.

Hamlet’s Youth Team pride themselves on playing free flowing attacking football and this Sunday has the potential to be a match everyone can enjoy – and it’s free entry!

Despite a valiant first half which saw Dulwich Hamlet take an early lead, QPR’s class and pedigree eventually shone through, with the visitors lifting the London Senior Cup after a 5-1 victory.

On the Dulwich Hamlet forum, fans reflected on the cup final:

BD: Great first 20 mins, ok next 25, second half we just couldn’t catch a break.

 

5-1 was harsh. Great turnout, good atmosphere, bonus to end the season at at home in a final in front of a passionate support.

 

Dacey spoke briefly to the fans at the end and promised to be back with more next season.

 

AT: That was harsh. We were tremendous the first period of the first half, probably the best I’ve seen us play all season.

 

But we allowed them back in, and it was the reverse of the Brentford game were we started to exert control. A few sloppy mistakes, and they punished us, and we’re not built for chasing games.

 

I also think the subs started too late, and frankly none made a positive impact.

I do really like this group of players, and hope that most are back next year.
We almost did it.

 

MG: It was a real achievement to get to the final and we had a real go.

 

However, once they got in front we had to gamble and their counter attacking game was too fast and precise for us. Good season all round.

 

JB: Not much more to add – fab first 20mins, but clinical finishing from QPR and thought they were so quick at gaining a yard of pace in the middle to open things up and all the balls out wide on the counter were precise to over stretch us.

 

After the last few years, a 9th place and cup final – bravo to the players, coaches and everyone above. Proper fun year and onwards to next season

DF: Really enjoyed tonight despite the score, QPR played some great stuff 2nd half especially in transition, once they’d got used to playing against full grown men!

 

Summer’s task has to be finding a Plan B for when Danny gets tired or things aren’t working, the only regret we can have is that we barely laid a glove on them after the free kick was saved around 55min.

 

2nd goal for them and related defensive mistake seemed to really knock our confidence, if Chambers just hooks that into the stand first time would like to have seen if we could have held on for pens.

PP: …Don’t forget there would have been extra time if necessary and they didn’t take the lead until 65 minutes. We made the first substitutions within 5 minutes of that while it was still 2-1.

 

It was the complete opposite of the semi-final, when we had to hang in there and make sure we didn’t lose it inside the first 20 minutes. QPR didn’t create a serious chance until immediately before they equalised (a great solo effort to force a corner, then a stunning shot from the edge of the box after the corner had been headed clear) and we could easily have been further in front by then.

 

The second and third goals both came from cheap turnovers that were ruthlessly exploited. Chambo dwelt on the ball and got mugged after coming across to the touchline to collect an aimless clearance from deep inside their half.

 

Then Luke started showboating outside their box instead of running at the defender and failed to see a second opponent coming in on the blindside to pick his pocket.

 

Ultimately QPR had a collective speed of movement and certainty of touch that was too much for us over the 90 minutes. They fully deserved to lift that magnificent old trophy.

 

However I really disappointed with the referee’s handling of the game. I felt his whole approach conspired against us. He repeatedly penalised us for what were essentially ball winning challenges with an element of physical contact.

 

You get the odd pedantic referee in the Isthmian League, but I’m pretty sure most of those we get would have given far fewer free kicks against us. It enabled the development team to sustain attacking pressure and gave us little respite, particularly during the lengthy goalless periods either side of half time.

 

I’m also baffled where he got the minimum 9 additional minutes from at the end of the second half. I can’t remember such a high figure being indicated all season.

 

The game was well and truly won and lost by then, and everyone around me just wanted to hear the final whistle to thank our players for the whole season’s efforts. It was sadly inevitable that more punishment would be inflicted.

Dulwich Hamlet wrapped up their home campaign for what can only be described as a ‘meh’ season on Saturday, with a bumper crowd of 3,334 watching them defeat Burgess Hill Town 2-0. Max was there to catch some of the action.

On the Hamlet forum, fans reflected on the game

PD: A new ground with a capacity of 4,000 – 3,340 today and tight fit.

Thought good atmosphere – and respect to Hamlet players who turned up and played in a game – at the beach end of the season – given our mid table position.

 

At least sell out crowd may help with deficit – due to lost Saturdays.
Onwards to the Cup – think will be 2,000 plus – given excellent advertising all over East Dulwich.

 

AW: 4,000 – 5,000. But it’s the stepped terraces that will make the difference.

The flat standing at the car wash end was six people deep in the second half, which is just ludicrous.

PP: It was the same for both sides, with Burgess Hill locked into 8th place, while we’ll finish 9th unless we lose our final game to Hashtag and St Albans win at Carshalton.

 

I wouldn’t have expected anything less from the current players, but we even got a decent game against Chatham on the final day last season, having secured our survival the previous week. (The less said about the 6-2 defeat at home to Cray Wanderers in the last game the previous year the better!)

 

There was a bit of an end of term feel to the game, although not in a bad way. No real gamesmanship, a referee who avoided giving free kicks for anything less than a blatant foul and showed only one (deserved) yellow card for one of their players late in the game.

 

I’m not sure where he found 6 minutes of second half stoppage time when only 4 separate substitutions were made and one stoppage for treatment after Joe rather comically flattered their captain with a challenge that wouldn’t have looked out of place on a rugby league pitch.

 

No foul was given and we looked embarrassed to play on before the whistle blew! The first time they won a corner we left 3 forwards on the halfway line, causing a sudden panic when they realised they’d committed too many players upfield, with a couple sprinting back to cover before the corner was taken.

 

We were very lucky not to concede a penalty when their #11 dispossessed Gaspar on the edge of the box, then stayed on his feet when our man clipped his foot in a clumsy attempt to win the ball back.

 

For the second home game running we led for almost the entire game after David Smith struck within 2 minutes.

 

I reckon he should probably have started at Welling too. I’d love to know whether Millsy was preferred because they had the young defender he bullied in the Orient game? Ultimately that was irrelevant because he played a different position and looked a better player with experienced teammates around him.

 

We even had the rare pleasure of Nyren running clear of the defence and converting a one on one with the keeper. It’s amazing how a player with so many goals seems less effective the more the odds are in his favour. The only similar Hamlet forward I can think of in this respect is Matt Norris.

 

Obviously the crowding situation isn’t ideal, but there are always less congested places for those who aren’t fussy which end they stand, especially the Greendale End in the second half.

Next Saturday, 25th April., Hamlet play their final game of the 2025-26 season away to Hashtag United.

If they win or draw they’ll finish their campaign in ninth place which is a kind of shrugs shoulder kind of place to be. But, of course, it could be worse.

There’s no point trying to sugar-coat this performance by Dulwich Hamlet as it was simply awful.

Limp, uninspired and dull as ditch-water to watch, it’s an afternoon we’re keen to forget, but if you want to relive the misery, scroll down to relive some of the (ahem) ‘action.’

Depressingly, Welling’s main street is filled with flapping cheap flags, posted up at half mast by ‘patriots.’

For fans of wobbly concrete and amassed metal gates, Welling is a must-see.

Hamlet fans offer some sage advice to the Welling keeper.

While the football was dreadful, there was at least some attractive trees to look at.

Welling took the lead in the 57th minute.  Waheey! went the home crowd.

Welling’s squad numbers apparently added up to 534.

Tony Howard makes it 2-0 to the hosts in the 64th minute.

There was a decent selection  of food and snacks on offer but the loo queues were immense.

A well stocked condiment table.

Full time: Welling 2-0 Hamlet. Thank God that’s over.

On the Hamlet forum, fans added their thoughts:

PP: Very disappointing in the end. First half was rubbish but we looked good for the opening phase after the break and were pressing for the first goal, which came against the run of play when Welling forced a corner and scored from a far post header.

 

A second goal 7 minutes later ended the game as a contest. Far too much pedestrian square passing in deep positions for me, especially after we fell behind.

 

The blond Orient centre back who was terrorised by Mills in the London Senior semi-final resurfaced at right back for Welling and played pretty well, whilst also exhibiting the typical low level gamesmanship which is clearly coached into all aspiring young professionals these days.

 

E: By fuck that was absolutely shite.

On a gloriously sunny Bank Holiday afternoon, Dulwich Hamlet defeated Carshalton Athletic 2-1 in front of a crowd of 2,188 at Champion Hill.

Carshalton came on in their cunning camouflage strip.

Hamlet fans created a banner in support Southwark Council estate cleaners, who are in dispute with the employer against proposed cuts which would severely deplete their pay.

If you want to support their campaign, you can sign the union’s open letter at Stop the cuts to Sunday overtime!

David Smith scored for Hamlet in the first minute.

Anthony Jeffrey made it to 2-0 to Hamlet in the 25th minute.

Half time: 2-0 to Hamlet.

Nathan Young-Coombes pulled a goal back for Carshalton and his abilities were noted by Hamlet fans on the club forum: 

AT: I have to say, Nathan Young-Coombes looked good. The goal was very well taken, and he was very busy. I’d be happy if we were able to snag him for next season.

 

PP: He’s a former England U17 International who was an academy player for Palace and Chelsea, then had a pro contract at Brentford.

 

He was a named substitute for 9 Premier League games, but made just one brief appearance.

 

He seems to have dropped out for a year, then joined Wealdstone at the start of this season on a short term contract but got injured.

 

Carshalton’s new manager was previously assistant at Wealdstone and obviously rates him. He’s aged 23 and looked dangerous as soon as he came on, and that was a stunning shot for their goal.

 

Carshalton remain at risk of relegation, but looked nothing like a struggling side, playing composed and skilful football in the final third.

The away fans let off a Poundland pyro that had all the visual impact of a briskly exhaled individual vape.

Dulwich Hamlet fought back from an early goal by Leyton Orient to emerge 2-1 victors, earning themselves a spot at the London Senior Cup final – their first cup final for 13 years. 

On the Hamlet forum, seriously chuffed fans added their comments:

MG: Great second half from us. I thought if we could get a goal the support would play a part – and we did as they focussed more on arguing with ref than playing. Proper double save from Toby too and his kicking was key.

 

BD: That was great. So many cup games over last 5 years have been abject heartless capitulations, that was the exact opposite.

 

Put out our strongest team, coped with the loss of an early goal, and won through sheer commitment and wanting to get the ball in the net at all costs.

Bloody brilliant stuff!

 

LW: Fantastic all round performance.. every player put in an absolute shift, subs made a difference and manager got everything just about spot on selection and tactics wise.

 

Thought that was the best Millsy has played in yrs. Had the bit between his teeth all game and lead from the front. Proper roll back the years performance.

great atmosphere too for 996!

 

BRD: The contrast between their first half and second was astounding, it was like they put out a completely different team.

 

All credit to our lads though, started fast and kept pushing. Nothing beats a final, see you on the 28th.

EDC: Everything great about non league football tonight.

PP added:

A real slow burner of an evening from our point of view.

 

I’ve noticed these teams of young professionals seem to set the tempo from the start and dominate the opening phase with their technical excellence, but if we can hang in there we can wrest control and beat them with experience and know how.

 

It happened against Charlton last year in the quarter final, and again against Brentford in the 2nd round this season.

 

On both those occasions we kept a clean sheet after weathering the early storm. This time we fell behind, then there was a crucial double save from Bull to stop us going two down just before we equalised.

 

Ultimately I don’t think Orient’s inexperienced young players were quite ready to compete against players with hundreds of men’s games behind them, in front of a partisan home crowd.

 

It was a shrewd move to restore Mills to the starting XI, because those youngsters won’t have faced a centre forward like that before, or a team that plays to his strengths.

 

I hope the final will be QPR. because I feel we can beat these sorts of teams. I’ll be less confident if it’s Cheshunt, who are just about the most awkward and unattractive mid-table side in our own division.

AT: Rather windy effected game, but a good result, 4-1. I thought we played very within ourselves, and being kind, had an eye on Tuesday night.

 

Probably should have been 4-1 up at HT, but will take comfortable wins whenever we can get them.

 

There was a fracas which led to PB getting a red card, but it was the other side of the pitch, so I couldn’t really understand what happened.

A bumper crowd of 3,097 wedged into Champion Hill on Saturday afternoon to watch Dulwich Hamlet lose 0-1 to in-form Billericay Town.

Buzz photographer Max was on hand to snap some of the action.

On the Hamlet forum PP filed his match report:

A tight game with few clear chances, as were the other recent home games against Folkestone and Chatham, but we lost 1-0.

 

The only goal came just after the half hour. We’d already had the closest other attempt by either side when a shot came down off the underside of the bar after good wing play by Baugh and Mills couldn’t quite jump high enough to guide the rebound into the net.

 

I couldn’t tell who had the shot due to a pair of Billericay substitutes blocking my view.

 

We had a lot of the play during the final half hour without creating real chances against a strong defensive unit, then the visitors looked the likelier scorers in the final stages.

 

The result was disappointing but not surprising when you look at the strength of their bench today. Few other clubs in the division could omit any of Frankie Merrifield, Jack Evans and Alfie Cerulli from the XI, never mind all three.

 

I’d say they’re arguably the best team in the division right now, with 12 wins from the last 13 league games including victory over champions elect Folkestone. The only defeat in that sequence was away to St Albans, where we recently succumbed ourselves.

 

Five of our six remaining fixtures are against teams in the bottom six, which brings a different challenge for our team.

KP added:

I enjoyed today, even though we lost. I thought some of our passing movements were exquisite and we didn’t collapse in the second half.

 

True we didn’t create many scoring opportunities, defensively we didn’t close them down as quickly as they did us, and some players committed fouls as they weren’t quick enough for a decent tackle.

 

Overall it showed that most of our players should be retained on merit. Keep up the way you played today and we’ll have an enjoyable end to the season, and maybe even a cup!

Dulwich Hamlet’s league season seems to be fizzling out into a long exasperated sigh, with the pink and blues losing to the most out of form team in the league on Saturday.

Max made the journey south to photograph the game for Buzz.

On the bustling Dulwich Hamlet forum, fans added their thoughts:

PP: We lost 2-1, with all the damage done in the first 25 minutes to leave us trailing 2-0 to opponents with just a single point and 3 goals scored in their previous 8 matches.

 

The first goal looked very avoidable as we came unstuck playing short passes at the back.

 

Millsy pulled one back on stroke of half-time with one of his “helicopter” headers, hanging over his marker to convert a Payne corner.

 

The second half opened with Hamlet forcing four more corners in succession, but despite piling on the pressure for much of the remaining time, we couldn’t find another goal and Lewes had some decent chances on the break with Bull making one outstanding save.

 

Playing against the most out of form team in the division after winning 4 of our last 5 in the league, this result illustrates why we’re basically a decent mid-table side rather than promotion contenders.

 

After last season’s fiasco I’d have settled for being where we are right now, with a base to build on for next season, and at least the result more or less ensures we get another trip to Lewes next season.

Dangerous and boring to watch, as is continually sailing the ball over the top after it.

Are we safe yet? If so let’s see more attractive, positive football.

 

DSD: It was a lazy , underachieving, end of season performance. Quite a few of these need to be off-loaded.

After two previous postponements, Dulwich Hamlet finally got to take on Whitehawk in the Isthmian League Premier Division last night, and the 628 fans in attendance were rewarded with plenty of goal action.

Dulwich fell behind after an early Whitehawk goal, but then responded in style, netting four goals by half time – only for the visitors to claw back two goals in the second half.

Despite Whitehawk frantically looking for the equaliser in the last quarter, Hamlet held on to bag all three points.

Fans reflected on the 90 minutes in the Hamlet forum:

AT: Well that was rather close. 4-1 at HT I thought flattered us a bit, I don’t recall their keeper making a save, and they had a couple of good chances.

 

That said, there were three very good goals in the half, two Robben style cut ins for us (Raymond and Talla) and their goal was a scissor kick from a long throw!

 

The second half was frankly, carnage. Fair to say the ref lost control, and scissor kick guy got a post FT red… TL;DR: it was worth attending on third time of asking!

 

AW: It’s remarkable how much more robust Whitehawk’s players were when they went behind, their powers of recovery suddenly went through the roof.

It’s fair to say PP isn’t a fan of Whitehawk:

A mad game in which Hamlet were on fire for the final 25 minutes of the first half, in which we scored 4 times after conceding the first goal.

 

We did our best to let them back in just before half-time when a terrible backpass put their big lump of a #9 clear down the middle, with only Bull to beat and all the time in the world, but hilariously he shot wide.

 

We didn’t turn up for the start of the second half and it was back to 4-3 with 25 minutes to go, although we managed to hold out after that despite the referee giving them an unfeasible number of free kicks and somehow awarding them a corner after Bull was clattered in mid air as he stretched to catch a lofted free kick down the middle.

 

Kassarate was booked for a perfectly clean tackle on the halfway line, with Whitehawk players appearing to be begging for the red card and being vigorously told to go away by the referee as soon as the yellow came out of his pocket.

 

If Whitehawk were shithouses in victory at their place they were utterly graceless in defeat tonight.

 

There was a commotion in the centre circle at the final whistle as they harangued the officials and I was told two of their players got red cards, in which case they’ll be suspended from next Tuesday.

 

Good. They should have played us two months ago when they had the chance instead of moaning about the pitch until the referee called it off. Bastards.

Whitehawk took the lead in the 14th minute.

Danny Mills scored the equaliser in the 20th minute.

Lonit Talla gave Dulwich in the lead near the half hour mark with a stunning solo goal.

Dulwich Hamlet’s recent winning run came to a juddering halt at St Albans on Saturday, with the pink and blues losing 0-1 in front of a crowd of 2,259 people.

N: Should have had a penalty in the first half, after that I think only one shot on goal the whole match and that was by Michael Chambers.
Didn’t really do anything till Tom Chambers and Gasper came on late in the match.

 

Their 2 centre backs played well, the 27 got man of the match.

 

PP: It was a game of few clear chances. I don’t recall either keeper making a real save. St Albans had the better of the first half and put a lot of crosses and passes into our box, all of which were defended well except the one that resulted in the game’s only goal, a low cross from the right converted at the second attempt by their dangerous left winger.

 

It was the same referee as Tuesday night at Fisher. He clearly prefers to let marginal fouls go, which I don’t have a problem with on the whole, as he’s consistent. However, he totally ignored a stonewall penalty inside the first ten minutes today when Sol made a darting run into the right corner of the box and slipped in Nyren with a flicked pass.

 

He was goalside of his marker, who blatantly pulled him back by the shirt from behind, causing him to stumble and fall. It wasn’t even debatable and there was no attempt to play the ball.

 

The opportunity to convert a penalty at that stage could have put us in charge, and we always look more comfortable when we’re ahead.

 

I feel we’re just too cautious by nature most of the time. We look more interested in retaining possession without hurting the opposition, instead of risking a turnover with a more adventurous pass in the final third.

 

I accept we’re rebuilding from a low starting point, and this season has been a vast improvement, but I find it a bit dull to watch at times.

 

We looked much better in the final 20 minutes after using all our substitutes, when we forced the pace and tested their defence. This resulted in a few counterattacks, which we defended well.

Dulwich Hamlet can consider themselves fortunate to have progressed to the semi final of the London Senior Cup last night, after doing just about enough to overcome Fisher FC at the St Paul’s Sports Ground.

With Fisher missing a couple of absolute sitters in a second half they completely dominated, the full time score of 1-1 led to a penalty shoot out, which Hamlet won 4-2.

There’s a lovely walk from Canada Water to the stadium.

BD: We didn’t play well, and should really have been ripping them apart given the league disparity, but its another match that we would have lost a few weeks ago, so on that basis I’m not going to complain.

 

Good set up for a small club but a perilous warning for those in charge of the new stadium – there has to be room right around the stadium for supporters, with decent vantage points, and some cover.

 

There was only a 1.5m width of flat tarmac behind one goal and all the way along the far side.

 

Which made it almost impossible to create an atmosphere in the second half while the Fisher fans were able to get right into it. Just a little extra room, and a bit of terracing, was all it needed.

 

MG: Thought they battered us second half and we had barely any attacking threat.

 

Their player had to produce something incredible to hit the bar when it was easier to score. Good penalties with Toby from sinner to saint in two kicks

Boosted by a large travelling Dulwich contingent, the crowd of 589 was Fisher’s biggest crowd of the season so far.

The ground is overlooked by towering bastions of capitalism.

This guy thought it would be a good idea to continually batter the Perspex screen throughout the game.

Untroubled by any desire to  provide a rhythmic backing to chants breaking out nearby, his random, rattling cacophony was like listening to a percussive Tourette’s onslaught.

While we were enjoying an impromptu group chat with fellow photographers, Geoffrey Okonkwo had the audacity to take the lead for Hamlet when we weren’t ready.

Half time: Fisher 0-1 Hamlet.

Fisher deservedly equalised in the 49th minute.

Fisher missed a couple of stone cold sitters in the second half.

The Beautiful South’s Paul Heaton has provided generous support to Fisher over the years.

We can vouch for the fella too – we met way back in the distant past and hewas a splendid fella.

Hamlet’s wining ways continued on Saturday, with the club picking up three points against a strong Chichester who were better than the scoreline suggests.

PP: A great win against a very good footballing side who battered us for 40 minutes until half time after we’d taken the lead with the first real chance of the match.

 

Three very well taken goals by Hamlet from quick thrusts. Nyren slammed in a left wing cross from Sol for the first.

 

Millsy latched onto a long clearance from Toby, held off his marker, and lobbed the keeper for the second. Sol fired in from an angle after Luke had unhinged the defence with a penetrating run and a quick one-two inside the box.

 

Chichester centre forward Jimmy Wild was a real handful throughout, as he was in both meetings last season, and reduced the arrears from 2-0 with a lob from the 18 yards line after winning a duel with Chambo.

 

If I could sign one player in this division I think he’d be top of my list.

 

The visitors also had two potential equalisers disallowed, one for offside that looked offside, and one for a foul at a high cross that looked fairly soft.

 

We rode our luck and a neutral would probably say Chichester deserved at least a point, but we’ve dropped enough points from games we “should have won.”

 

This time the boot was on the other foot as Hamlet converted three of only four real chances created, while the opposition squandered multiple opportunities or were denied by our keeper doing what he does best.

EM: A better result than performance. Chichester missed a load of chances between our first and second goals. Somehow failed to score from a host of corners despite being the biggest team I’ve ever seen.

 

Also got very lucky that the ref didn’t give Kassarate a second yellow for a blatant deliberate handball towards the end of the first half.

 

On the positive side, 3 great goals and a good run of results.

BD: 9 points in 8 days, impressive stuff.

 

Yes the 60 minutes after the first goal yesterday were pretty dire, and like the second half at Cray VPM we didn’t seem to know how to break up the constant pressure in that spell, but the huge difference to earlier in the season is that we came out the other side with more goals and all 3 points.

 

Everyone went home happy, including the club accountant for a change, with 3,000 in the door and we must have shifted thousands of pints in the sunshine.

At half time  this Saturday, 28th February 2026, two friends will run a 100m race across Dulwich Hamlet’s pitch in a bid to raise £10,000 for St Christopher’s Hospice.

Here’s the background to the race:

New research launched today by St Christopher’s Hospice in partnership with Dulwich Football Club shows just 16% of UK adults say they would openly discuss their grief with friends or family.

The findings highlight the ongoing stigma around talking about loss, even though most people will experience bereavement in their lifetime.

For Geraint, whose wife Deb died at the age of 43 at St Christopher’s, breaking that silence has become his mission.

He is encouraging others to talk more openly about grief whilst raising awareness of the hospice and fundraising in his late wife’s memory.

His story has also led to an unexpected reunion.

After hearing about the loss, Geraint’s friend, comedian and broadcaster Elis James, reached out to offer support. The pair have since reconnected and will go head-to-head in a 100-metre race during half-time at Dulwich Hamlet FC’s home match on Saturday 28 February 2026.

The race aims to spark conversation, bring people together, and shine a light on the importance of talking about grief.

Geraint, said:

“It’s because St Christopher’s made an unbelievably difficult time as good as it possibly could be for the whole family that I want not only to raise some serious money, but also to encourage more people, especially middle-aged men, to talk about death and dying.”

Elis James, comedian and broadcaster, said:

“Since Geraint’s wife Debs passed away, we have had many conversations about how St Christopher’s helped make her final months as dignified and as comfortable as possible.

Geraint has always wanted to turn his grief into something positive, and I couldn’t admire him any more.

 

That said, it’s 100m sprint and he’s a Cardiff City fan, so I won’t be able to show my face in Swansea ever again if I lose.”

Deb died from pancreatic cancer in September 2022 when their three children were 15, 11 and eight.

Geraint had been posting about his experience on social media following her diagnosis and, in the weeks after she died.

Fiona Walkingshaw, Head of Bereavement Services at St Christopher’s says:

“Bereavement touches every one of us, yet grief and dying is still surrounded by stigma and misconceptions.

 

“Hospice care is so much more than managing end of life symptoms but also addressing emotional needs and enhancing quality of life.

 

Our dedicated team work really hard all year round to help not only patients but also their friends and family achieve what matters most to them by enhancing the quality of life.

 

“Too often people feel isolated or unsure where to turn. At St Christopher’s, our teams work tirelessly to break down those barriers, offering compassionate support and creating safe spaces where individuals and families can talk openly about the changes and losses they are experiencing.”

Following the race, Geraint plans to return to the hospice for the first time since Deb’s death, to present what he hopes will be at least £10,000.

Last night, Dulwich Hamlet overcame a strong and combative Chatham Town to emerge 1-0 winners after a 96th minute strike by Michael Chambers.

On the Hamlet forum, PP posted his thoughts on the encounter:

It seemed to me like Chatham had by far the clearer chances and better attempts on goal, even if the overall balance of play over the 90 minutes was fairly even, and our keeper made pretty much all the difficult saves.

 

It felt like we were the away team for the most part, but it shows the value of staying in the game by defending diligently and taking it right down to the wire when one clear chance and one goal will be enough. The Chatham players were on their knees when that goal went in.

 

It was also nice to see Adam Leathers hasn’t improved since playing for us 4 years ago. There was a hilarious moment when he picked up Kassarate to mark at a corner and began manhandling him, only to find himself out of his depth as he was effortlessly swatted away.

 

I did find Chatham an unpleasant team to watch and certainly won’t attend any of their games as a neutral after that.

The attendance of 748 was the lowest league attendance at Champion Hill since Spring 2017.

Chatham’s strip was a curious affair,.

Whereas Hamlet’s not entirely successful offering last season featured arty contour lines representing neighbouring hills, Chatham went for a more literal approach.

Their strip transplanted  an entire town map on to one side, but we couldn’t work out why some player’s shorts looked  an off-white colour.

We asked a  Chatham sub if it was  down to a laundry malfunction, and he quipped, “it’s because those players spent more time on their arses.”

To be honest, at times we felt like we’d be lucky to get a 0-0 draw, but Chatham couldn’t get their finishing right.

Dexterity, poise, balance. This man had it all as he negotiated the stairs with his precious triple-pint cargo.

Even Cray Valley’s unsettling lucky gnome (pictured above) couldn’t stop Dulwich Hamlet collecting all three points at The Artic Stadium yesterday, with the pink and blues surviving an awful second half performance to win 2-1.

On the popular Hamlet forum, PP added his match report:

We certainly made hard work of that. Deservedly 2-0 up at half time on balance of play, although both goals came in the last 5 minutes of the half after CVPM had wasted two glorious chances on the break.

 

Our old boys Marvel Ekpiteta and Danny Waldren were a weak link at the heart of the home defence, both booked by half time, the former for dissent after pointlessly arguing over being penalised for an obvious grappling fouls on Smith after getting away with several others, the latter for a crude foul on AJ.

 

Within a few minutes of the second half starting, Ekpiteta threw Smith to the floor with another judo move and rightly got a second yellow card. We were 2-0 up with 40 minutes to play against 10 men and somehow lost the plot.

 

I felt we made unnecessary substitutions too early, withdrawing AJ and Smith for Wanadio and Kassarate, leaving us with no focal point in attack and Clunis playing as a false 9.

 

AJ was immense for the 60 minutes or so he was on the pitch, CVPM just couldn’t handle him, and Smith did the hard yards for the team without getting any clear chances himself.

 

By the time Mills was introduced we’d conceded a goal after faffing around at the back and giving away a free kick, then ended up hanging on against a poor side for the last 25 minutes. Anyway, all’s well that ends well!

 

I just wish we’d be a bit more proactive in putting a game to bed in this situation. It was a classic example of a red card causing more disruption to the team with the extra man.

 

We went from looking dominant to looking desperate. On the plus side, we lost at home to Bognor last year in similar circumstances, but won today. That’s progress.

AC added:

Good to see another win but it should have been easier. Needed good saves from Bull and great interceptions by Chambers to see us over the line.

 

At the end of the day with are the the average side in the division. Played 30 . Won 10 , Drawn 10 , Lost 10 and scored 41 let in 39.

 

We have definitely improved from last season and that is noticeable away from home particularly on non-grass pitches.

 

At home we are pretty much the same. As stated above the Whitstable game and particularly wanadio’s red card was a early turning point in the season.

 

He was on fire at that point but has rarely looked the same player since and difficult to argue in Baugh and Jeffery starting ahead of him. The Team has also not reached those early season hights again

 

It would be good to have that Fans Forum soon. I think it was before Xmas that we were asked for preferred days and subjects to be covered.

BD: First half lots of pressure, rabble in great voice (with a roof over our heads, what a sound). I was just saying to the person next to me that I like Sol but he needs to add goals to his game, and two mins later he did just that.

 

When AJ slotted it in it really did feel like job done. As ever, that was not the case, the red card energised them and it was us that looked like 10 men for the whole second half, as let Cray dominate.

 

I’m not a coach but seems to me there must be some fairly basic things you can teach the players to do to ease the pressure and take the sting out of the game.

 

Couple of side points, was great to have warm enough weather to sit outside soaking up the Eltham atmosphere at the Rusty Bucket, and the Cray pint glass £1 deposit scheme was a pain in the ass.

Sol Baugh fires home for Hamlet in the 42nd minute.

Two minutes later, Anthony Jeffrey scored the second for Dulwich.

I think it’s fair to say that this Cray player a tad displeased with the ref.

Hail The Gnome!

Cray’s Marvel Ekpiteta was sent off early in the second half, and that proved the catalyst for Hamlet to enter Useless Mode.

Despite a strong performance, Dulwich Hamlet were overturned by two second half goals by the runaway league leaders Folkestone Invicta last Saturday.

AD: Seven home league games without a win, dating back to the St Albans game 99 days ago. We’ve scored three goals during that run, conceding 13.

 

MG: Not from where I was watching. Folkestone defence was excellent and we had few ideas on how to unlock it. We are also shot shy. Missing huge chance in first half didn’t help.

PP: I think it’s pushing it a bit to say we were the better team in the second half, because we simply didn’t ask enough questions of their defence, which is the tightest in the division by a margin. We did well to hang in there until half time at 0-0, restricting the division’s highest scorers to very few real chances.

 

Each side wasted one glorious first half chance, with Folkestone’s star striker Joe Pigott firing over the bar after a run and pass from Jake Hutchinson, then Nyren did everything right to set himself up on the edge of the box only to fire wide of the gaping net after sidestepping the keeper.

 

We had a lot more of the play in the second half as Folkestone seemed to drop a little deeper, but I felt we could been a bit bolder in committing more men forward. Maybe the thinking was that we needed to be patient and avoid conceding first, but eventually that happened anyway.

 

Their second goal was the last meaningful kick of the match and made the result look a bit more decisive than it was.

 

This result won’t define our season. Folkestone must have a colossal wage bill and that team already looks well equipped for National South with a 14 point lead at the top of the table.

 

We’re level on points with Lewes from the same number of games, but they lost 5-0 at home to Folkestone last week and 6-1 at home to Aveley today.

 

We’re more competitive than that against the best sides, but we also lost 4-1 at home to Lewes. Those are the sort of matches and results we really need to worry about.

 

Next up is Cray Valley away, which was probably our worst performance of the season when they beat us at home. We really need to win that one, then back it up with some solid results in the sequence of home games that follows against Chatham, Chichester and Whitehawk.

Dulwich Hamlet’s hopes of getting in the play offs took another knock on Saturday as they lost 1-2 away at in-form Aveley.

JB: Thought it was a very evenly matched 1st half, Aveley didnt really have a standout player but were very quick to loose balls and very well drilled in all areas of the pitch.

 

Was down the other end, but their first seemed like a powerful drilled cross at the guys head and could have gone anywhere but went into the goal. 2nd goal a bit of a cock up our side.

 

Glad we at least got a goal but they were a decent functional team.

KP: My son said he thought they were more committed than us, maybe it’s more confident than us. We did things well but they got to balls quicker and drove forward whereas we were slow going forward giving them chance to get back into shape.

PP: I wasn’t there today but my impression from the home game against them (a 3-3 draw) was they’re quite a cynical team with a win at all costs mentality, which possibly gives them a competitive edge if controlled properly.

 

They’re also 2nd in the table after two thirds of the season and have only been beaten three times, so they’re serious promotion contenders having only been relegated last season.

 

Annoyingly we’ve slipped into the lower half of the table for the first time this season after St Albans and Whitehawk both won. However the former are the only team above us we still have to visit, so theoretically we’ve already played all our toughest away fixtures. The conundrum we need to resolve is poor home form against the weaker sides.

 

Let’s not forget we were one place away from being relegated last season, which was an utter omnishambles. All else being equal, we can thank Hemel Hempstead for poaching Hendon’s manager in December last season.

 

They were still above us and we’d already entered our slump that ended the Hak era when that happened, which shows just how terrible they were to slip below us.

 

This season has seen clear progress from a very low starting point with an equal number of wins and losses. For me, we’re a competent mid-table side with room for improvement, and I’d have settled for that at the start of the season.

All the mystical forces of the Brentford Town Shaman (above) were not enough to repel a clinical Dulwich Hamlet on Saturday, with the pink and blues registering a decisive 2-0 away victory.

DSD: That was a great response to all the moaning and groaning.

 

A game plan was set out and we executed it to perfection and played them off the park

It could easily have been 5 or 6 but for very small margins when firing on goal.

 

Smith was a thorn in their side and was well worth his 2 goals and AJ and Wanadio always asked questions throughout the minutes they were on the pitch.

 

PP: First half was a bit short on excitement, with Hamlet edging it, but second half we blew them away and a couple more goals wouldn’t have flattered us in the end. Best performance I’ve seen since the opening day against Dartford.

AC: Great day out. I thought it was the best performance of the season. Similar to away at Ramsgate but even more dominant. The first game against Dartford was great but thought their goalkeeper had a bit of a mare on the day .

 

The way we play this season is suited to 4G/5G pitches with quick and clever interplay to feet. Apart from a mad 30 minutes at Cray W we have looked good on fast flat surfaces .

 

David Smith is a great signing for how we play. Always had a good goal record at out level and his goals yesterday were class. Difficult to pick out individuals as they all played well but I thought Sean B-J had a great game.

 

Best I have seen him at right back and him and Jeffery and later Clunis tore apart their left side of defence

 

MG: My takeaway is they have more flags than fans.

Despite a spirited performance by bottom of the table Potters Bar Town, Dulwich Hamlet collected all three points from their visit to the Lantern Stadium.

We bossed the first half hour but failed to make it count, then Bar hit us with a sucker punch after clearing one of our corners (Smith was blatantly being fouled by their #4, who wrapped him up with both arms as the ball was heading directly towards him, but the referee either didn’t notice or chose to ignore it.)

 

Great finish by Smith for the equaliser in first half stoppage time, receiving a through pass from Wanadio to the left of goal and swivelling sharply to guide a low shot beyond the keeper’s reach inside the far post.

 

Smith had earlier had an apparently valid goal inexplicably disallowed after meeting a far post cross from the byline with a header that was blocked behind the goal line, then scrambled away.

 

The linesman flagged, which initially seemed to confirm the ball had crossed the line, but it turned out to be a signal for offside. Even the keeper remarked there’s no way anyone could have been offside.

 

Wanadio put us ahead 2 minutes into the second half from a rebound after a speculative shot from SBJ seemed to catch the keeper by surprise.

 

We came under siege for a while late in the half, as Bull made a couple of outstanding saves, and had a narrow escape when a goalbound shot was deflected onto the underside of the bar by defender’s outstretched leg.

 

The killer third goal came in the last of a minimum 7 additional minutes when Clunis broke clear on the right and squared the ball for Talla to fire home.

 

Credit also to long suffering supporter Mick O’Shaughnessy, whose painfully arthritic attempts to retrieve the ball for a goal kick may have ensured just enough time was added for our equaliser at the end of the first half.

 

It was like watching the Over 75s five-a-side tournament scene from Father Ted, as Mick inched his way towards the stray ball to pick it up. Then lobbed it onto the roof of the net.

CD added:

Comfortable on the face of it but they had to withstand a lot of pressure at 2-1. Hit both posts and had a goal disallowed before Potters Bar scored on the break.

 

Then turned it around with goals either side of halftime before the frantic finish. Smith looked decent upfront.

Dulwich Hamlet’s Yuletide visit to struggling Carshalton failed to produce the points needed for them to keep up the pressure on the play off pack, with a Kassarate equaliser in the second half earning them a point.

The game seemed to highlight many of the familiar frustrations of recent months. On the plus side, we’ve lost only 3 of 12 away league games so far; we have more away wins and the same number of away draws achieved in the whole of last season, with 9 games still to play.

 

We actually won more home games (10) than we lost (9) last season, which emphasises just how bad the away form was to finish so close to relegation. This year’s model also appears much more comfortable and competitive on 3G surfaces.

 

There just didn’t look to be enough goals in our team today. We had the greater share of possession and territory for long periods, especially in the first half, but didn’t create enough real chances.

 

Carshalton’s slippery forwards looked much more menacing on the break to me, although their wastefulness probably illustrates why they’re struggling for wins and hovering too close to the bottom four for comfort.

 

They took the lead late in the first half when Raymond and Payne were caught in possession knocking short passes around on the halfway line and a quick thrust left Bull exposed one on one against a forward who slipped the ball past him from just inside the box.

 

A few minutes later we got one of those tedious contrived “time outs” where the Carshalton keeper goes down with a phantom leg injury after barely exerting himself for 40 minutes. Both sets of players go over to the dugouts for a pep talk from the managers.

 

An additional 3 minutes of stoppage time was indicated at the end of a halt in which there was no other significant stoppage, and after 2 of those minutes we equalised from a free kick.

 

Kassarate was blatantly fouled on the right touchline by former Aspire Academy defender Fikayo Atewologun (one or two non-playing substitute games for our first team 4 seasons ago from memory) and Raymond delivered an inswinging dead ball kick to the near corner of the six yard box for Kassarate to escape his markers and beat the keeper with a downward header.

AD added:

Three wins and 19 points from the last 20 League games is close to relegation form for the best part of half a season.

 

Seven teams have scored less goals than we have – most have games in hand, four of them are in the relegation places.

We’ve played five cup games, losing three of them to lower step teams at home.

 

Danny Mills has played in 27 games out of 29, scoring three goals. We’ve had an alternative senior striker available for four of those games.

 

Injuries were apparently the problem – the squad is mostly fit with Mico available again next game.

 

Too many games was apparently the problem – we’ve had five games in four weeks and won one of them.

 

After the Kingstonian game some players were apparently unlikely to wear the shirt again. Two weeks on the squad is exactly the same.

 

They say the definition of insanity is doing the same things over and over again and expecting different results. Got to say I don’t feel particularly sane watching the Hamlet right now.
