Facebook Ads - Stop them from accessing your photos and personal information from your profile page

Though facebook says that it will not sell your personal information to any third party advertisers, it is always better to be safe than sorry. Also, there is a small clue hiding in their words itself, which says "Even if we give your information, it is with your permission, like what you set up in your settings".

So, what am I talking about?

It is all about the Facebook Ads settings. Do you know that there is a setting in facebook, which allow advertisers to post ads depending upon your status messages or private messages or photo comments? This means, indirectly facebook lets the third party advertisers to have access to your personal information and profile page details, and to display ads depending on your taste.

For example, let us say you are living in London (which you had put in your location info) and if you have a message saying "Oh I prepared yummy chocolate cake" in your status, then you will see an ad on the side of your profile page like "The best place to buy yummy cakes in London is xyz". So, the advertisers pick all the details they wish from your profile, and put ads accordingly.

So, as I said in the first paragraph, though facebook says that it will not sell your personal information to any third party advertisers, it is always better to be safe than sorry. Also, there is a small clue hiding in their words itself, which says "Even if we give your information, it is with your permission, like what you set up in your settings". Funnily, the default setting is "You accepted" to give your details to the advertisers.

Won't it look bad, that the advertisers can access your photo, where you stand with your husband or wife and people wrote comments like "Gorgeous couple", and place some X-rated ads in your page, which will be visible to your friends too?

So, here is the easy steps to follow and stop this disaster access.

After logging into your facebook account, click on the Account --> Account Settings option (which can be seen on the top most of the right hand side). There you will see a serial of tabs as below

1.Click on the last tab called "Facebook Ads".

2. Click on the link "Edit third party ad settings".

3. Select the option as "No one" instead of "Only Friends" and save the changes.

4. Click on "Facebook Ads" tab again.

5. Click on the link "Edit Social Ads Settings" and repeat the same as in step 3.

All done. Now no one has the access to your info for ad purpose.

I heard that this comes into effect from 29th April 2011, that is today. So act fast and change the settings. It hardly takes 2 minutes of your time. Save your personal informations and photos from the eagle eye of the advertisers.

How to Edit a audio / music / MP3 / Song file

Do you like to edit a portion of a music / audio file like MP3 or want to divide the file into two portions? Do you have a song which is too lengthy to be embedded in your video and want to have only a part of that in your video. Don’t worry, it is too easy to do.

Here is a very easy and quick way to do, with a free music editing software. Let me start with an example. I have an MP3 file below, which is more than 8 minutes in length. But I want only the saxophone music which plays for the first 2 minutes, to embed in one of my videos. So, here is what I did.

The software can be downloaded from the website of Audacity.

1. Go to the link - http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

2. Click on the download audacity for windows option (select the version you wish)

3. It takes you to the page, where the exe file is available to download. Click on it.

4. Run the exe file.

5. The download starts and asks whether to Install. Click on Install and select the language and location to save the file as per your need.

6. Once when the installation is done, you can start playing with your music files.

7. Open the application by going to the start up menu.

8. Open the music file you want to edit.

9. Now click on the starting point you want in the music. With the left click of your mouse, drag till the point you want to have in that music file. You can see in the below file that I have selected the first 2 minutes (shown in grey portion).

10. Now copy the portion. You can either do Ctrl + C or go to the Top Edit menu, and select Copy.

11. Now open a new file, by going to the menu File à New

12. Go to Edit à Paste which will then paste the portion you have copied from your original MP3 file.

13. Click on the Green button (Play) and check whether the portion copied is correct and which is the actual need of you.

14. Are you satisfied? If no, then repeat the above step of selecting the required portion exactly and copying into a new file. If yes, then Click on the menu File à Export to save the file.

Facebook New Privacy Setting - Instant Personalization - Third party websites going to access your personal information, without your knowledge

One of the latest privacy settings handled by facebook is "Instant Personalization". This setting gives access to your personal information to other third party websites. The facebook page says like below

"Our goal is to give you a great social and personalized experience with every app and website you use. We've worked with a select set of partners to personalize your experience as soon as you arrive on their sites.

These partner sites (currently limited to Bing, TripAdvisor, Clicker, Rotten Tomatoes, Docs, Pandora, Yelp, and Scribd), can only access the information and content you've already made available to everyone. All our partners are required to respect your information and we've worked closely with them to make sure they do."

The main thing you have to know here is, the default setting is set as "Enabled", which means, default the third party websites has permission to access your information, without you knowing it exclusively. So, one should explicitly go and remove the "Enable" power given to the third parties, if they don't like to share their personal information with others.

Here I am giving you detailed step by step guidance on how to un-check the permission given to this instant personalization privacy settings.

1. Login to your facebook account and click on the "Account" link seen in the top of the right hand side and click on "Account Settings" option shown there.

2. Scroll below and you will find the "Apps and Websites" link. Click on it.

3. You will be taken to a page as shown below. Scroll below and you will see the "Instant Personalization". Click on "Edit Settings" of this option.

4. Sometimes it will open a page, which try to teach you about this Instant personalization settings and purpose. Click on Close button.

5. Now you can see a tick mark (check) on the side of "Enable Instant personalization". Remove that (Disabling Instant Personalization). There is no "Save" option. Just un-check it and wait till the process gets over (which will be shown by a sign). They you can continue with your browsing, as usual.

How to remove the header from your blogger and blogspot posts?

After a short break, I am back now. Few days before, I got a mail from one of my friend asking how to remove header from her blogspot. Though I have replied her already, thought of putting that in my blog as it may help few others too, who are in search of that option of removing the header from their blogger home page and other posts too.

So, let us start here.

What is a header?

Header is the portion, which will be seen on top of your blogger page, with details like search button, Follow button, Share button, Signout Option, Next Blog link are all available.

Though these options helps us in few ways, some people don't like to have this header looking odd in their blog and wish to remove it. So let me tell you in my step by step method on how to remove the header by a simple code.

Step 1

Go to http://www.blogger.com/ and login into your blogger account with your username and password.

Step 2

Go to the Dashboard --> Design --> Edit HTML option.

Search for /* Header in the HTML code and add the below given code, just below the /* Header as shown in the image.

How to Publicize your Blog Posts using Google Feedburner?

Michael Dadona a.k.a Mike asked me to publicize my blog using Feedburner. But I didn't have any clear idea about what Feed means and how to burn it. I just know to burn my fingers when I try to feed my son with his angry or eager bites. But what is this Feedburner all about? Later I went to Michael Dadona's blog itself, where he had given an awesome clean instruction that helped me to understand about Feedburner and easily do the publicize job.

Now I thought of putting that in my own ways, reiterating step by step guide to publicize the blog using google Feedburner. Let us start.

What is Feedburner?

Before saying about feedburner, it is a must to tell about RSS. RSS means Really Simple Syndication. It is an easy and effective way to gather data from various other websites (which are your favorites and from where you would love to get updates). When you visit some website and found it interesting, you can subscribe to their RSS, by which you will get the latest update from that website / blog without the need to visit it individually. After seeing the update, you can either neglect if you are not interested or go that site to get more details. I just put it in as simple as possible words. RSS has more benefits than what I said. But as a blogger I guess this is sufficient for time being.

OK, now where comes the Feedburner here? I said, you can subscribe to some others website. But if you own a website or blog and want others to know about your update, you should have the RSS for others to subscribe. According to Google definition, "Feedburner is a product acquired by Google, which helps publishers analyze, optimize, publicize, and earn advertising revenue from their RSS feeds". Feedburner is an enhancer to RSS, adding more cool functionalities without you to do much modifications or jobs.

The main and popular use of Feedburner is using it for publicize of your blogs. Let us say, you have more than one blog and you want to tell the visitors of your Blog-1 about the updates in Blog-2. So, what would you do? Sit and write a page giving links to your Blog-2? How much time and effort is required to do it?

Most of my visitors to this blog may be thinking me as a serious person with a goal of earning high through Internet tactics. 99% of them would not be aware of my other blog, where I write about Love and Romance, my other face of life. So, I now used Feedburner and now my Romance blogs update is shared here in this writing blog. A break in mid of serious works.
Feedburner made it all simple. By using that, it is all done in just a matter of minutes. Here we go with a step by step guidance of how to achieve it.

Step 1

Go to http://feedburner.google.com/ and login with your google user name and password (ahh ya, the very same Gmail id and password).

Step 2

You will be taken to the page where you need to add the blog URL. The image I have given below has already two of my blogs added for Feedburner. Give your blog URL as shown and click on Next button.

Step 3

On click of next button, you will be taken to a page, where you will be asked to select the option of having Atom or RSS. I have selected RSS as my Feed Source. Click on next button after selecting the required option.

The next page will show you other options of customization, which are really not important for me. So, I selected the "Skip and go to feed management directly" option.

This takes to a page, where you can see 5 tabs namely analyze, optimize, publicize, montionize and troubleshootize. Click on the Publicize tab.

You would be able to see a list of services provided on the left side tab. Click on the BuzzBoost link.

Step 7

The next step takes you to a page where you need to fill / select the options like how many posts you want to be shown by the Feedburner and so on. I select a minimum of 5 posts and a maximum of 10 posts, as something more than that will look like a non ending list in the blog, with a long way to drag. You can see rest of my options in the below image. After all settings done, click on the "Activate" button.

Step 8

The next page gives you a piece of script to be embedded in the blog, where you want the Feedburner list ot be displayed. Let us say, you created the Feedburner for your Blog-1 (in my case, let me say I created a one for my http://mythilishiju.blogspot.com/, then I want to place this code in my http://write-and-earn.blogspot.com/)

Step 9

Go to www.blogger.com/home and go to the design --> Page Element of the blog and click on Add Gadget, where you want to place the Feedburner code.

A page opens with various list of options to add as gadget. In that select HTML/Javascript (you need to click on the + symbol corresponding to this option) as shown in image.

You will get a box, where you need to place the Feedburner code, copied from the feedburner site for your blog. Place the code there, give a title and save it.

Now you can see the Gadget added to the Page Element. Save the Page Element.

Now, go to your blog and view the Feedburner displaying the updates from the other blog, attracting your visitors to visit your other blog too. I have shown it by an yellow color rectangle in the below image.

How to exclude your own view counts from Google Analytics?

Have you ever wondered whether the reports shown in google analytics include your view count too? Yes of course it do take it into account, if you have not asked google analytics to exclude your view, explicitly. So how to ask google analytics, not to take your own views into account and exclude them from the report.

Here is the step by step guidance to do it.

Step 1

To exclude your count, you should first find your IP address of your computer to tell Google Analytics to avoid that particular IP address from counting into the report. So, let me tell you how to find your IP address, if you are not aware of it.

I follow two ways to find my IP address of the system. One is, with the help of a website named http://www.whatismyipaddress.com/. When you go to this site, it will automatically show you the details, just in the homepage. You don't need to do anything like giving an input or filling a form. Just open the address in the browser and you will get your IP address.

The another way to find your IP address is, without visiting any website, just from your computer alone. To do this, go to start menu and click on Run button as shown below.

You will get the dialoge box as below. Type CMD in that box as shown and press Enter key.

Now you will get the command prompt, where you need to type ipconfig and press enter key. You will get to see your IP address as shown in the below image (which I have hided). You need to pick the value corresponding to the name IP Address as shown in red mark.

All right. Now you know your IP address. Now let us proceed to find on how to exclude it from google analytics.

Step 2

Login into your Google Analytics website. In the homepage, you will see the list of websites / blogs that you have added for the analyze purposes. On the right side of the blog (for which you want to exclude your own view count), you will find an edit button. Click on it.

You will be taken to the next page where you have the editing options.

Step 3

Scroll down to the lower portion, in the page you got to edit. You will see a "Add Filter" option.

Step 4

A new page opens, where you have the option to include or exclude domains / IP address from the google analytics report. Give a name for the filter. Select Filter type as "Exclude", "Traffic from the IP Addresses" and "they are equal to" in the options respectively. Fill in your IP address (which you found by following step 1) in the column given and click on "Save Changes".

Step 5

You can see your new filter added to the list.

NOTE: You have to frequently check your IP address, as it may change, if your computer has the DYNAMIC IP Address. IP Address will not change for those who have STATIC IP Address. So, check it every now and then, and update your filter with the new IP address.

Done. Now, your google analytics report will not take your views into account and give a false view count. So, why you should do all these work of excluding your views?

Because, many people who didn't exclude their view from account used to say "I had 200 views for my blog as per google analytics report. But I couldn't see any improvement in my AdSense earnings", without knowing that 180 views are from their own IP (which means, no earnings) and just 20 views came from outside. By excluding your own views, you will have the accurate idea of what the real view count happened for your websites / blogs.

Top 10 Tips for Budding Bloggers to Make Good Traffic and Earn Money by Blogging

Blogging is a kind of outlet for some people, who love to share anything and everything from their life. But for few, it could be business, a channel to bring money to their pocket. No one can achieve a level of earning thousands of dollars in one night. Any business to get success needs time and patience along with the hard & smart work. Every effort taken today will be rewarded soon. But again I stress, you need to have patience until you reach the goal.

My father always used to say, "You cannot expect a seed to turn into a tree in a over night. You should give time and your effort to get the fruit (benefit). If you keep digging and take the seed out of the sand every day to find the growth, then it will never work out. You should allow it to have its own time to spurt out of the earth". Today, my friend Michael Dadona said a word "Rome is not built in a over night". Great.

As a budding blogger, we should have patience and give time for things to work for us. But along with that, we need to follow some other steps (tips) to walk in the path of victory.

1. Write Frequently

If you write once in a while, people will visit your blog once in a while. To keep yourself on top of the competition, you should be remembered by people and this happens only when you are active. Do you love to watch a movie of a hero who acted long before, took a very long break and came back now to act again or will you watch the movie of a hero who is all time active and giving continuous success currently? People will remember your face only when you are active. Write frequently until you reach the level of expert, where visitors will come looking even for your old post and never bothers about that you didn't write for the past one month.

2. Quality Vs Quantity

Some people will tell you that quality is more important than quantity and some will say the vice versa. But I would say, it is equally important. If you write an article of very high quality, but just with 200 words, then the search engines are going to ignore it. Because, they give importance to the length of the content also. But at the same time, if you write a lengthy article with poor quality, by just repeating the same matter / words / content again and again, then it too would get ignored by the search engines. You cannot fool them. They know the tactics and catch you correctly. So, make good quality articles with a good quantity level too.

3. Write what you know

Never write on something because some one else whom you know is doing that and earning money. Because, on long run, you would be left with nothing to proceed further or you will become a copy cat, who just copy what others say and turn far away from originality. This will again make your blog sink and not going to help you. When you write on the topics you are interested and know well, you will have the flow, which will attract more visitors to your blog.

4. Build Network

Visit others blogs and write Quality Comments. This will work as a perfect Backlink to your blog and gets more traffic and visitors to your blog. When people start visiting your blog and finds it useful, they will keep coming back. Make sure you visit the blogs which can be related to yours and leave quality comments there. For example, if you have a blog about health and food, then do visit others writing blogs on health, food, beauty and write comments. People who are visiting those blogs may come to your blog by the backlink provided by you. Backlink here, doesn't mean that you need to give your blog name explicitly. Doing so will give a bad impression indeed. Instead, as I stressed again and again, write QUALITY COMMENTS. This will give a best impression on you. So, automatically people will feel clicking on your name, which will work as the backlink. In blogger, when you write comments for others with your blogger id, your name will automatically linked with your blog URL.

5. Make it interesting and interactive

Skilled authors can write on even dry subjects, but still make it interesting by giving practical examples, funny / witty explanations and the same time right on their point. Even if the topic is an interesting one, people will not love to read it if the way it is presented looks dull and boring, just with a theoretical touch. Also, make sure you write in a simple and effective way. Because the Internet-cyber world consists of people all over the world and mind it, not all are well versed in English.

Always provide a comment option for each article, so that people can leave their opinions, comments which may some time trigger great discussions giving way to your article to reach on the top of search engines. 6. Do a research before saying

Whatever you say (write), make sure it is accurate. It is always good to give reference and proofs to win your statements, especially if you are writing a blog about medical field or some latest happenings around the world.

Note: Don't forget to credit the source website which you are referring too. Otherwise your blog will fall into the Plagiarism list in the eyes of the Google and Bing and Yahoo and whoever concerned.

7. Make the visitors to pass the content

Write the article in such a way that the visitor should feel like "This will help my xxxx. So let me pass it". For example, once I wrote an article about potty training and withing few days, I received a mail from a visitor saying that she passed the article to her sister who was struggling with her 3 years old daughter to make her potty trained. After 5 weeks, I got a mail from the sister of the visitor directly saying, she got 90% success and showed her confidence to achieve it within few more days.

8. Hook the visitors

Make your blog interesting, and always give a scoop news of your future articles. Write articles that are inter related with each other, so that a visitor who came in search of one article will keep reading more articles in your blog. For example, I wrote an article about PageRank and later wrote a one to tell how to install the PageRank tool.

9. Know the earning options

If you want to earn out of your blog, maximize the opportunity with various options. The well known option is using Google AdSense. But apart from that, there are lots of other choices available now in market like Amazon Affiliate Network, Google Affiliate Network, Adbrite, Kontera and many more. I am yet to do this step and I am analysing them. Will come up with more articles exclusively for this point, very soon in my blog.

10. Keep it clean

Your blog should look good and user friendly. I should not look like a market filled with lot of data and advertisements with less clarity. You should place your ads in such a way that it should be easily attract the visitors click, at the same time not piercing the eyes calling "Come on click me", as this may irritate the visitors and make them to fly out of your blog soon.

Monitor the Web for interesting new content by using Google Alerts

We just love to keep us updated. So, is there someone to help us?

Yes, we too do have an online assistant, who delivers the details and data to our hand by including the news what we want and excluding the details what we didn't ask for. This personal assistant is named as "Google Alert".

Google Alert is another product of Google, where you can create alerts on the topics you have interest and wish to get updates on. Once when you create an alert, you can receive the news and data in your email or in the form of feed.

OK. Stop. Relax. I think I was just too excited and talking (writing). Let me tell you in my usual simple ways, step by step guidance.

1. Let us say, you want to know about "Write and Earn Online" and love to get updates on this particular topic. Update here means, any latest content getting published somewhere in the corner of the Internet world. So, what you should do?

2. Login into Google Alert. You don't need a separate username and password. You can use the same that you use for your gmail account / blogger account / orkut account / adsense account / google analytics account / google webmaster tools account / picasaweb account (and a few more which I left)

3. After login, you will see a screen saying "you don't have any alerts, try creating one". Of course, it is the first time and no alert is going to exist. Click on the "Try creating one" link.

4. In the page which it opens, give the search term (as per our example, "Write and Earn Online").

5. You can alter all the other options like type which default shows "Everything", where as you can set it as a specific one like news or blog or video which means, it will give you the corresponding data only. If you select blog, then you will get an alert whenever some one posts a topic related to Write and Earn Online in a blog.

6. If you want to know the changes of Internet immediately, then set the "How Often" option with "as-it-happens" or you can have it as "Once a day" or "Once a week".

7. You can control the volume of the details you want by selecting either the best results or the entire results of the search term.

8. You can get the alert either in the form of mail or in the form of feed by changing the corresponding option in that page.

9. Once after setting all the options, click on the "Create Alert" button. Done. Now you will be updated with the up-to-date knowledge and happenings of the Internet.

10. You can create as many alerts as you wish. You can have an alert for movie, one for your exam, one for earnings and so on. If you are bored with one particular alert, you have the option to delete it also. So, enjoy. Good luck.

I promised to tell you about the installation of PageRank tool which displays the PageRank of any website you open in browser. Here I keep up my word. Let us see how to install the Google Toolbar and get the PageRank too.

Step 1

If you are using Internet Explorer, then visit the link http://www.google.com/toolbar/ie/index.html

Step 2

Let me take the Internet Explorer (IE) as an example and proceed. Click on the "Install Google Toolbar" button.

It takes you to the Terms and Conditions page. Click on Accept and Download.

Go to the toolbar options (Shown as the favorite bone piece of a dog) and add or remove the features as per your need.

Go to the General Tab and you will find the option to add the PageRank there. Check it and Save the changes. Done.

Open a new browser and you will be able to see the PageRank tool in the google toolbar list and when you place the cursor over it, it will show the PageRank of that particular page.

How to own the ownership of your blog(s) ?

Almost, all of us, who use Internet owns a blog (of course, the platform belongs to blogger or wordpress or some other blog providers) or some websites. The words "Blogger" and "Blogging" do not restrict itself into a particular theme or group. It could be related to business for a businessman, like my friend Michael Dadona, who changes every opportunity as a Money Maker for him. For someone like me, it could be a place to shout like "Look, what I learnt today. You too can give a try like this". For some, it could be like a personal diary where he / she can write about the daily happenings, just like sharing and venting out the inner pressure to a friend.

Whatever may be, we all write in blogs and think that we are the owner of the blog. But do we really own it? You may say "YES. Of Course I do own my blog. I have the rights to login, change the password, write a new post, edit my existing post, delete unwanted data, moderate the comments, change the settings, change the theme and outlook, then what? Don't I own it?"

Yes, you said it all. You are right. You are the owner. Just in the eyes of you and your friends, who know that it is your blog. But not in the eyes of the Search Engines. Google or Bing does not accept you are the owner, until you claim and verify your ownership. Got it?

So, what should you do to tell these giants that you are the owner of the blog and have all authorities related to it? Here I am explaining it all with detail screenshots to help you. Alright, let us proceed further.

P.S. I have no clue about wordpress, because as far I know, we don't have the rights to change the basic structure and edit the html part of the wordpress design. So whatever I tell here is related to Blogger.

Most of us, including me (till sometime before) thinks that, every blogger needs to have just an email id (preferrably gmail) and that is more than enough to work with a blog. Yes, it is more than sufficient for a blogger, who just writes his personal feelings and never wants a reader to peep in. But this alone is not sufficient for anyone who wants a unique place in the cloud of Bloggers.

They should be aware of the following products of google, which are all inter related with each other. Apart from blogger and picasaweb, google has the below products which are more important for a blogger.

1. Google Analytics (GA) - Used to analyze your own strength. It will give you details about your blog, who visited it, how your blog works. It gives you a fair idea about what you should do to improve your blog.

2. Google Adsense (GAd) - You all know. It is all about earnings.

3. Google Affiliate Networks (GAN) - Extra Earnings from the affiliates too.

4. Google Webmaster Tools - This is what we are going to see in this page. Rest of the above three points, I will explain soon here, in near future.

Step 1

Go to Google Webmaster Tools. Login with your gmail user name and password. For any one who uses the gmail email id, everything comes in a bundle. You can use the same id and password to login into any of the google products. For those who are not, you may sometime need to verify yourself by registering everytime with the username you used for login into the blogger.

In the homepage, you will see a "Add a Site" button. Click on it. A box will open below it. Type the URL of your blog in it. Don't give the URL of a particular post. Give the main URL. For example, to claim my blog, I have to give http://write-and-earn.blogspot.com/

Click on the continue button.

You will be able to see a page saying "Verifying Ownership" as below.

Select the 2nd option (Meta Tag). You will get a code as shown in the below image. Copy the code.

Go to your blogger homepage www.blogger.com/home (or Dashboard). Click on the "Design" of your blog. Click on Edit Html.

The HTML code of your blog will open. To avoid any risk, please click on "Download full Template" before doing any changes and save it in your local computer disc (at any location as per your wish, by giving a relevant name, you can remember).

After downlading the template. Find the tag in the html code of the template. Add the code copied from the google webmaster tools exactly below that tag .

Now, go back to your google webmaster tools page and click on the verify button.

Done. Now you are the verified owner of the blog. Repeat all of the above steps for every blog you own to make sure you are the owner of that blog.

How do Social Networking sites like Facebook, Twitter and Digg influence your PageRank?

Yesterday, I spoke about PageRank here, along with the reason why a higher PageRank is important for a website to be considered as a successful one in the world of Internet and how to achieve it. Now I am going to talk about some other outside forces who influence your PageRank, apart from the other factors like Backlinks, Quality contents and Quality comments.

Few months ago, Google changed its algorithms for the search results, which we all know and heard about. It is never possible to find out the exact algorithm used by Google to get and display the SERP (Search Engine Result Page), though few of them can be guessed like PageRank has an important role, Backlinks do have something to do in this, etc...

In the beginning of the year, Google's Matt Cutts said that they treat any websites equally, whether it is a Facebook or twitter or some other, and the inbound links to an article from them are considered the same.

But recently, search engine giants like Google and Bing confirmed that Social Networking sites like Facebook, Twitter and Digg do have influence over their search and Search Engine Result Pages. The links from Facebook and Twitter are considered for the organic search result. Based on number of followers we have and number of followers we do follow and the number of times a link is shared or re-tweeted, the links we share get more weight, which leads to higher PageRank and obviously the cycle continuous like getting to the top in search engine and so on.

Matt cutts in the above video clearly says that, though some links come from Facebook, it cannot be considered for PageRank, if the robots are not allowed to crawl and pick. Robots cannot crawl into a link and select them, if it is set as a Private link or shared only among selected people. That is why many of the authors place their links in their Facebook as Public, that anyone can visit. In such cases, the robots (it is just a file of google, meant to crawl and index any pages) can crawl and index the page, which further helps in ranking the page.

As per Google and Bing, these social networking sites are mentioned as social authorities, which are meant to send reputable and quality inbound links. When a page or link is re-shared in Facebook or re-tweeted in Twitter, they get more weight, pushing for a higher PageRank. It is very common you can see a "Share" button or "Tweet" button below any articles or contents found in the internet. When it is clicked for more times, the page gets more inbound links from the social sites, leading to social marketing techniques, which are considered as quality inbound links to the page, which gets the page a good PageRank.

So, next time when you write a piece of content about anything, don't forget to share it in Facebook and tweet in Twitter. They do have a value. Social Networking sites are not just only for chatting and scrapping as we it is used by most of the people. But they do have more other purposes. Utilize and get benefited. Thanks.

What is a PageRank and how a website is assigned with a PageRank?

OK, you all might have been hearing this word PageRank more often these days, especially in my recent articles. Even few of my friends asked me like "Mythili, what is this PageRank all about" and yes few darling friends threatened me "First tell what a PageRank is and then continue your other topics. Else, I don't mind buying a ticket to Switzerland, not to hit you, but just in the name of guest, I make you busy in the kitchen and won't let you to write any more topics until you explain me PageRank". Wow what a nice threat.

Trust me, I am not writing this article just to stop my friend flying to Switzerland, but I don't want her to suffer in the icy Switzerland and prefer her to come in summer. So, with a pure good intention, I am going to tell about PageRank in very simple ways.

OK, have you all studied in schools? Yes, I heard your roaring and shouting. Priya, yes yes, I remember you were next to me in the classroom. I accept. So, back to our original discussion about PageRank. In school, we all used to write tests and exams, score marks and based on the total marks scored, we will be given a rank which ranges from 1 to n, where n is the total strength of the class. The student who gets the 1st rank is called as the topper (I mean the real topper and not the backdoor meanings), where as if a student gets 10/10 rank, then he/she is considered poor in studies.

But Google and other search engines like Alexa, Bing and Yahoo do an opposite ranking. If a website has 10/10 as PageRank, then it has achieved the top most level. Just like your score in the mark sheet. If you get 100/100 in Mathematics, then you are the King (or Queen) in that subject. Similarly, the search engines will judge your websites and give a PageRank ranging from 0 to 10. Only few websites have achieved a PageRank 10/10 in the whole of the Internet world and lot has 0/10 as the rank. Frankly, very large number of sites are not ranked at all, yet.

So, now you might have understood what a PageRank is all about. But why is it so important? how is it decided? Who decides this? How a website is determined to get and assigned a PageRank?

These questions take you to the deeper level of SEO (Search Engine Optimization) and SEM (Search Engine Marketing) concepts, which leads to SERP (Search Engine Result Page). First let me tell why is it important to have a higher PageRank.

When you want an information or details about anything in this world, the first job you will do is to type http://www.google.com/ in your browser and search. Sometimes, I have gone mad of typing my mobile number in the google search, when I couldn't find my mobile in the living room. Once when clicked on the search button, you might have seen a loads of websites loaded in the result page (this is called as SERP, search engine result page) which are relevant to your search keywords. Everyone is aware that there are thousands and millions of pages exist in the Internet database. So, on what basis the result page orders them and shows it to the user / customer?

Here comes the PageRank. Though there are lots of factors like keyword richness, Backlinks, Quality Comments deciding the search engine result page, PageRank plays an important role. The websites with higher PageRank comes first in the result pages.

Now, isn't it clear why a higher PageRank is must for a website? To survive in the Internet world, your website should have a PageRank. If you are writing an article, just for yourself or for few friends, to whom you will send the article link personally and never mind about getting other new readers to your page, then of course you don't need to bother much about a PageRank. But, if you are in the middle of a competition and want to have more readers, then you should have a good PageRank, which leads to more search friendly and in turn getting more visits to your website / page.

I am showing my Triond Profile here as an example. Triond is a content writing website and to know more on it, click here. Triond has a PageRank of 5/10, where as my profile got a PageRank of 2/10. Attached below the image of proof. Most of my fellow authors, who are writing for a very long time in Triond are yet to receive a PageRank.

Let us move on to the question on how to get a higher PageRank.

There are lots of deciding factors to determine a PageRank of a website. The first and foremost thing is the "Original and Quality" contents of the website. Websites which have duplicate contents (and that too without a credit to the source page) or just having links to other web pages without any contents on its own are not given good PageRank (sometimes even not considered for ranking itself). After this main qualification, other factors like Backlinks (I will explaining Backlinks in details, very soon. For time being, Backlinks are the inbound links sent to your article from outside web pages like Facebook or Twitter or some other's website), Keyword richness in the articles existing, Quality comments received by the article from the visitors, discussions it triggered, usefulness on the base of votes it received, etc... determines the PageRank. To tell in a very simple and easy way, it is just like your answer sheet in the examinations, valued on the basis of its content and clarity and receiving a score based on it.

To summarize on how to get a higher PageRank,

1. Write an Original content. Many people might have already written on the same topic. But still you can write it on your own words and style and keep up the originality.

2. Make sure you did a small marketing job of spreading the news (that you wrote a new article) to Google, Bing, Facebook, Digg and Twitter by submitting the link to them. Also do the usual job of telling your friends and family about the new article.

3. Go visit other authors works in the Internet. Write them Quality comments, which in turn works as a Backlink to your article. Good and successful authors generally visit the pages of people writing Quality comments to their work, and appreciate them back with their Quality comments and reviews.

4. Keep repeating the above steps every time and follow them rigorously. You will be blessed with higher PageRank in near future, automatically.

Though Thanksgiving day as per the calendar is ended for this year, I think, any time is best time for saying a Thanks. There is no such restriction. And especially for me, the thanksgiving session is getting extended every moment, hour and day.

As you all know, Michael Dadona, one of my best virtual friend (yes, I never got to meet him yet, but feel as a very good friend and mentor who guides me 100% in this virtual world), used to give me tips on how I can keep improving myself in the competitive world of Internet. He was the one who explained me the concept of "How Quality comments help to get Higher Pagerank" and based on his advice only, I wrote that entire article about it.

Within few hours it got indexed by Google and Bing search engines. But the special news is, within few hours of publication, it was selected by Bing news and got published in the below link.

While browsing in the Internet, I just playfully searched for the article I wrote about Quality Comments, in google search (of course every author will be doing this and find happiness when it is shown in the top page of the search). My original article in my blog came in some 4th place, but the same article which was selected by Bing News came in the first place (even at this moment, when I am writing this article). Frankly, I didn't take it serious, because I have no clear idea about the importance of getting selected in the Bing News. Later when I casually shared this news with Michael Dadona, he expressed his happiness and shared the joy in my Facebook wall, congratulating me and appreciated it as an "Excellency" award.

Then I started realizing the importance. I felt the joy spreading inside me. I felt as if I got the Excellency award in my academic studies. Oh yes, I got University rank and Distinction during my college studies also. Ahh, utilized the chance of expressing my happiness (and a bit of self proud in between). So, let me take the chance of Thanking Bing News by this article for their greater support provided to my article and there by to my blog. Their support helped this budding blogger to proceed further with confidence and happiness. Why you should sign off your Yahoo and Hotmail accounts before going to bed?

When I said one of my friend that she should log off from her yahoo and hotmail accounts before going to bed, she laughed and told "Don't talk like my mother. She always insist me to take a cup of milk before going to bed and now you are insisting on something else, an added job to me".

Well, she started following my advice after I shared the dangerous secrets going behind the unsigned off accounts. You too will, once when you know what I really mean.

I have an yahoo account whereas my husband uses hotmail account. We both had the bad habit of not signing off our accounts or shut down the system for long time, unless something messy happens and forces us to do so. One fine morning, my husband saw a lot of "Mail delivery failed" messages in his hotmail inbox. He was shocked as he didn't send any of those mails. The mail was sent to all the users in his address book. He felt so bad, because he had not only friends and family members in the list, but also few of his colleagues and ex-managers from previous companies he worked for. It took a long time for him to revert the things back, sending apology mails stating it was a virus mailing through his account. After this, the first thing he did was to download his address book from the hotmail account and later deleted the entire list from the online account, reset the password, done... done... done...

Everything went smooth for a while. But again a day dawn with lots of mail delivery failed messages. This time it was sent to hell lot of people whom we don't even know and never heard about those email ids. He got shocked and had no clue why this happened again. He didn't have time to invest and investigate the issue. He left it to me saying "It is up to you to find and fix it. I don't bother any more about that account, as I have none of my contacts in it".

I too didn't spend time in it and forgot about it for a while. One day I got a mail from Michael Dadona, my friend, saying that he received some virus mail from my yahoo account. Now, it is my turn, I thought. I cannot give it up easily as my husband did, as I use this id for a long time and most of my friends have this id to contact me. So, I started analysing the issue.

I did a step by step analyze like this.

1. Is my account got hacked?

No, it was not. Because I were able to change my password. I am still able to login and use it. So, it is not hacked.

2. Did I give permission to some third parties to use?

No, I didn't. I am not into any third party business. I am just what I am, using id for mailing friends and chatting, just like millions of other people doing.

3. Did I share my password with anyone?

No, I didn't. Not even with my husband (oh, my sweet guy don't even bother to listen, even if I wish to share).

So, where it went wrong? How some one is able to get into our accounts and mail someone and slip off silently? If they were able to get into the account, why didn't they change the password and use it permanently?

Now, this sparkled something in my mind and came the secret in my hand.

When you don't sign off from your account and leave it idle for more than 2 or 3 hours, your account is identified as in "Sleeping Mode" by the intruders, who silently get into your account by wired method (which is also a weird method). It is just like leaving your front door open and going to bed. Anyone can get into it. They cannot do this when you are active and using the account.

So, once when your account is in sleep mode, intruders can enjoy using it, sending virus mails to their recipients as well as your recipients, read all your mails and do whatever they want and then get off from there.

Now, again the question comes. Why didn't they take the power of the account completely, ditching you out of your own account?
OK, here we go. To change your password, it will ask for the old password even if you had logged in, before changing into a new one. As I said, these intruders don't want to take any account in their hand. They just want to have some fun and misuse others belongings, sometimes blessed to have some crucial details like bank accounts and other passwords.

So, now what do you say? Want to sign off before going to bed or just have nice good morning just like we had?

Which one is best - Blogger Vs Hubpages Vs Triond Vs Assoicate Content Vs Helium ?

Whenever I get some stupid doubts related to online earnings or SEO or SERP, I always prefer to get it cleared by my friend Michael Dadona. Because he is the one who can understand any type of stupid questions and yet come with best answers and examples to explain his point clearly.
One of Michael Dadona's proverb is "Don't work for the system. Let the system work for you". I used to think, "How can I earn if I don't work for any system? If I don't write an article for Triond, how can I expect it to pay?". My biggest drawback is, I have less patience. I should admit it. I have no interest going deep and digging the function of a system or to spy the work of how a system operates and what are its secret set of rules. I never bothered how much they take and how much they pay me (which is a peanut according to Michael Dadona a.k.a Mike). Because I never took Internet earning or google payments so seriously. I used writing as a way to express myself and to tell myself that I am not lonely. But when I found some thing fruitful out of my writings (check out my payment proof, that I earned around $190 just for a month from Triond alone), I felt to make it more better. As a proverb says "Once when you found the taste, it is hard to give it up", I don't want to loose the good chances. I don't want to write and earn giving up my other priorities like time for my family, gossip with my friends and so on. But still want to utilize the best opportunities coming on my way.

So, now I am all set to work smart, instead of work hard. Yeah, another thing taught by Michael Dadona. "Working Smart is more important than working hard" is what he tells whenever I say "I wrote quality article, but didn't get good count of views". But I get confused every time when I find a topic to write, whether I should write it in Triond or hubpages or helium or associate content or in my own blog write-and-earn.blogspot.com ?

OK, before going into what I decided and where I am planning to put my effort finally, let me tell about all the websites I mentioned.

Triond

Triond gives me power to write any type of articles, even without much knowledge. Frankly sometimes I have seen some junk articles of few authors like "I have no work today, how about you?" kind. All newbies and totally new to Article Writing field will find it as a great place to write. Because, it won't force you to have google AdSense or sometime of affiliate networks for earning. It is just simple. When your articles are viewed, it will earn. It may range from 1 cent to 10 cents for 10 views. You can also earn few cents from referrals too. Apart from this, triond enabled google AdSense option too (as I said, it is optional and not a must, if you want to start writing in Triond), which gives you some extra income.

Triond has a PageRank 5/10 as of today.

Hubpages

To earn in Hubpages, one should have google adsense and other affiliate networks like amazon, kontera, etc... So, to earn good, your hubs should attract great number of views, as you all know how google adsense calculate the impressions, cpc and all those fainting calculation methods.

Hubpages has a PageRank 6/10 as of today. Obviously it has good rank than Triond.

Helium

Helium is also a good website for article writing. But then, it is very tough to get views here and you should have very high quality articles to earn good. 1. If I write in Triond or Hubpages, I don't need to do much marketing, as they have good PageRank. So, if an article is searched in google, those in hubpages comes first than those are in blogs. So, how can I make it through? I remember all those SEO tips. But above all, won't hubpages collectively win and push my blogs down?

2. In hubpages, once when the author is successful (like writing good hubs and have good score), it automatically tags the authors work and rank them high. But in blog I need to take every step and effort of making it popular. Will I be OK in the long run?

Thanks to my friend Michael Dadona a.k.a Mike, who always insisted me to give and get quality comments. He always told that even a great article gets killed by stupid and useless comments, whereas even an average article finds it way to success by the quality follow up comments and quality reviews it receives.

Frankly I didn't have much idea about this topic and always wondered how quality words used in the comments of an article be more powerful than the keywords used to build the entire article itself. Trust me, Michael Dadona (see, I am using his name often instead of the word "he" or his nick name "Mike". This is another secret, which I will share later) is talking about this quality comments and writing to me for nearly 1 year and I understood its value clearly (should I say crystal clear?) just a week ago.

OK. Back to the original matter. So, how do comments help in your success? What is this PageRank all about? Why should I bother about PageRank? How should I get it and what should I do to get it?

To understand about PageRank, you should wait for a little bit more time. I am going to write about it in detail within few hours to days. But I will, for sure. So, here I am going to talk one and only about Quality comments and reviews helping in the success of an article or content or hub, whatever you name it.

Well, let us say you have successfully written an article, just like my article on how to make and edit photos or pictures using ms paint.

Now, I have made the article rich with keywords, attractive with supportive images, fantastic with step by step instructions. Any article, once when published, it will get INDEXED by the search engines like google, yahoo, Bing and many others who are all in this so called job "Search Engine".

So, what is indexing?

Now again with your new question, you are paving way for me to write another topic. I am happy. You gave me a new topic to write. Hold on, it will be explained soon and I will give a link here. Until then, please read further.

Once when indexed, your article will appear in the search engine results when searched by people around the world. For example, if you go to http://www.google.com/ and type "How to make and edit photos using ms paint", my article comes in the third place of the first page itself. See, it comes even without giving the entire title. You can even try typing "How to edit photos using ms paint", it manages to come in the first page.

OK, now you may think what the big deal in this. If an article is good and rich with keywords, it will be obviously listed in the top of the search engines. But how long? Let us say that some one else too wrote an article about editing photos using ms paint with the same level of rich keyword usage. Won't my article go behind the scene? So, now the quality comments work as the saviour of the article.

Once after indexing, the search engines will look into your article every now and then, especially when some comments are written as an add up to the article. If the comment is something like "Nice" or "Good share", then it will not index the article again (oh these search engines have artificial intelligence to separate useless comments from quality comments), which means your PageRank may get lower and go below in the search engine result page (SERP), whereas articles which got new QUALITY COMMENTS will be indexed again, pushing to higher places in the SERP.

Michael Dadona sent me a proof of his Quality Comment written for my article (the same one I gave as example in the beginning "How to edit Photos using ms paint"), being indexed by google. That induced me to write this entire content about "Value of Quality Comments".

In the very beginning of my blogging era (it is not so long long before story, just a very few years back) and my article writing era, I got amused by seeing people writing comments, which are sometime lengthier than the original articles. I didn't had the knowledge to understand that it is a nice way to get back quality comments and quality reviews from others to their own articles which is actually called as Backlinks by techies, and to keep themselves and their articles as highly searched ones in the search engines. Another point which I didn't understand before but clearly now is, updating the contents. I have seen some successful authors re-writing their own contents every now and then and changing some keywords often. I have wondered why they do so. Today while returning from school after dropping my son, nearly 15 "Young in Heart, but Aged by Years count" people (few women and most men), got into the tram along with me. All those 15 people were around of age 70 and above. They were chatting and laughing when they got into the tram. Later, they continued the same after getting into the tram also. One of the men from the group got up and acted like a woman in the same group who was complaining little about her back ache. He stood and walked like a very old woman, with a bent back and laughed at his friend saying "Cheer UP lady".

Frankly, I couldn't able to hide the smile on my face and my mind started thinking about my grandparents.... and in general, all those elderly people from my place, a small village in south most India. In my place, if elderly people behave like kids (I mean enjoying life, laughing and mocking, getting wet in rain and running), then people around will start saying comments like "Oh is this needed for him/her in this age?". The society has always put an expectation and unwritten laws in the shoulders of the elder people, that they need to be serious and strict, and being funny will show them cheap. While thinking more deep, most of the elders in India are totally dependent on their kids when the turn old, and there by they abide by the set of rules, to gain their respect.
