Emperor Echo will be put to use recording important marine data over the next few months.

Dr Ahmed Shawky of the EcoPro Training Center will be leading guests on three separate week-long trips in June, July and November during which time they will take part in coral and reef checks as well monitoring and identifying marine life.

Dr Shawky – who has a PhD in the ecological behaviour of dugong as well two masters degrees in the behaviour of spinner dolphin – has worked for many years in the Red Sea national parks and has an indepth knowledge of the environmental issues they face.

The June and July trips will take in Emperor’s South & St Johns itinerary with the November expedition based on our Daedalus, Fury & Elphinstone route.

Dr Shawky said: “In the past I have worked with individual participants. But rather than do it at a distance I had this idea to collect all participants together to visit all the marine life in one place at one time

“In preparation for the trips I have run online courses with the participants so they are qualified by the time we come together. We will the spend our time on the trip monitoring and recording the marine life as well as having presentations every day.

“I select the seasons carefully for the trips. In June and July when the first two trips are going it is the high breeding season for green turtle and for spinner dolphin. In November it is the sharks.

“Each participant has their own account on coralwatch.org, reef.org and reefcheck.org and we will all record our findings and data on there.”

Dr Shawky chose to use Emperor for his first trips but hopes it will be a long-standing relationship.

“Emperor have been the pioneer for this with me,” he added.

“I have known Luke (Atkinson, Emperor Divers Red Sea general manager) for many years and he has helped me a lot. He knows this is very important work.

“Emperor have been very good in their assistance.

“Also, Echo is the perfect boat with the two decks which means one can work like a classroom.

“When these trips are a success we can hopefully plan for more in the years to come.”

There are still very limited spaces on all three trips and more information can be found by visiting https://www.ahmedshawky.net/Marine-Eco-Expedition.html.

We’ve always tried to be in the prime location and, new for 2022, we think we’re in the best one yet.

Located in the brand-new Port Ghalib Marina City complex we are right on the waterfront and within a few minutes’ walk of The Palace, Albatros, Marina View and Radisson Individual Port Ghalib hotels. No more water taxis or bus rides needed - all the shops, hotels, restaurants and boats of Port Ghalib are on the same part of the marina as us.

We have all the facilities you'd expect, from equipment rinse to luggage store, as well as a fully-stocked shop. Our boats - Emperor Skye and the larger liveaboards - are right next door and can be walked to in a couple of minutes or, if you prefer, by zodiac tender! So, whether you're joining us for daily diving trips, for courses or on week-long liveaboard safaris it's a must visit.

We are easy to find, just walk over the bridge next to DiVino and look right over the next bridges - you cannot miss our huge sign on the Marina City wall.

And we are, of course, still offering our complimentary collection service from all hotels within 20km of Port Ghalib. So, wherever you choose to stay, there’s every reason to dive with us.

It’s a new location but the same convenience and the same great team.

It’s time to dive Marsa again.

Emperor Serenity recently had the pleasure of welcoming world-renowned photographer Alex Mustard MBE on board.

Alex was joined by 16 budding photographers looking to hone their skills and receive professional coaching from their multi-award-winning tutor.

We adapted our ‘Best of the Maldives’ itinerary to suit the needs of the group as deep and channel dives were replaced by shallow thilas to give the photographers the best possible light and conditions to capture that award-winning shot.

And it all worked to perfection as Alex and his students had the ideal trip.

“Photography trips are demanding because the guests don’t just want great dives, they want those dives to be photographically productive too,” Alex explained.

“The crew on Emperor Serenity worked so hard so that we could focus on our images and Thomas and the dive team really understood what we wanted from the dives. Exciting drift dives or hooked-in shark encounters tend not to work for photographers, as they don’t provide good snapping conditions.

“But since we were a whole boat charter (with purposely-reduced capacity), Thomas could tweak the normal itinerary visiting a mix of classic sites and photographer friendly spots, ensuring we were all bagging quality images.”

Successful dives were repeated to allow a change of lens or camera set up so photographers could scope out the underwater topography and marine life then return with a scene or subject in mind to capture.

The dhoni crew really had their work cut with 17 very-expensive cameras to manage in and out of the water. Additional charging and rinsing stations were set up to cope with the requirements of so many cameras.

Alex hosted daily workshops, breaking down the technique and set-up required to capture his award-winning pictures. He explained various methods and produced stunning visual examples to push the creative boundary of the photographers onboard. The setup, pre-dive plan, marine life interaction and respect to the framing, composition and post editing of the pictures was all explained.

The photographers were in for a real treat with perfect conditions and the Indian ocean appearing more like a serene lake. A week of glorious sunshine gave the perfect light needed in all conditions from high sun to the golden hour before sunset.

Along with these conditions Thomas and the team put on a spectacular week of sightings! Reef sharks and turtles and the stunning topography of Seventh Heaven and Bathala thila to the schooling blue-line snappers at Kuda Rah and Fish Head. Not to mention mantas by day and night plus an incredible encounter with a whaleshark at the back of Serenity one evening. Nothing was missed, even a frogfish was on fine modelling form!

Alex added: “I love diving the classic atolls of the Maldives during the first third of the year.

“The sea is calm, the water is so warm you can never get cold and the marine life is rocking. This isn’t the easiest place to take photos because the currents can be strong and the visibility unpredictable.

“But it is one of the best places because, while photos might be harder to get, the Maldives gives us the chance to get images that will become lifetime favourites, featuring not just pretty reef scenery, but great creatures like mantas, sharks and turtles and masses of fish. It is what keeps me coming back for that perfect shot.

“I am already looking forward to my next workshop on the Emperor boats in the Maldives.”

With Emperor liveaboards - what you see is what you pay

We understand that working out your holiday budget can be a concern in a world where costs seem to always be on the rise.

That is why with Emperor Divers you can be reassured what you see is what you pay – there are no hidden extras or price increases.

With many other companies you might think the price is right but, as your holiday progresses, you keep paying out more and more.

Our costs are fixed with everything included.

For example, Emperor’s liveaboards include all marine park and port fees and all fuel surcharges. With some other companies these are all extra and you can find it adds up to €250 per person to what you expected to pay.

We also offer FREE NITROX on all our liveaboards and at all our dive resorts which can represent another huge saving as many liveaboards charge between €70-€100 for a seven-night trip.

And the good things in life are also included. Things like complimentary wine with your dinner!

You get this on all Red Sea liveaboards, Emperor Explorer, Serenity and Emperor Virgo in the Maldives and Emperor Raja Laut and Harmoni in Indonesia.

So, it is worth factoring in to your plans that Emperor’s pricing has no nasty surprises when you arrive in resort. The price you see is the price you pay!

Kathy Yee: "I have chosen this company because everything is included except gratuities. Getting nitrox and wine complimentary to no extra fees for permits or fuel. Thank you!"

Mike Holton: "So easy to go on a holiday with (Emperor) as you know exactly what you are getting for the price. Always very friendly team, very experienced guides and boat crew."

Andy Harris: "I have previously dived with other companies, on both liveaboard and day diving around the globe.

It is not everyone who emerges from winter looking better than ever but we think Emperor Echo is the exception.

The last few months have seen her getting a new look thanks to the excellent fleet maintenance team who have done a remarkable job.

The extensive re-fit has provided a fantastic fresh feel with even the smallest details taken into consideration. And the pictures don’t lie as you can see for yourself how beautiful she is.

So, now Emperor Echo is ready to go again, why not be one of the first to find out in person how great she looks?

Spaces are already limited right through the summer and autumn months as her popularity remains high so time is of the essence if you want to secure your place on board this year.

And, as with all Emperor liveabords, our costs are fixed with everything included.

That includes all Marine Park and port fees, all fuel surcharges and all local taxes (excluding service charge). We also offer free nitrox and you even get complimentary wine with your dinner!

Emperor Divers are restarting their Instructor Development Courses in Egypt – and for some they could prove life changing.

The opening of Emperor’s new Sharm el Sheikh dive centre earlier this year has provided the opportunity to once again become a PADI 5 Star Career Development Centre - the highest possible award rating - and means we can offer high-quality training under the guidance of course director Chris Azab, with the goal to kick-start your career in the dive industry.

All IDC candidates are guaranteed a four-week internship directly after the exam to develop their instructor skills further under the guidance of our team, and a limited few will be able to take up a further four-week internship on our liveaboard fleets in the Red Sea, The Maldives or Indonesia. Incredible opportunities to dive some of the best destinations on Earth while building your skills for a future in diving.

It could really be the opportunity for someone to turn their passion into their profession.

Emperor’s Red Sea general manager Luke Atkinson said: “As we celebrate 30 years in business, it’s time for Emperor to re-focus on one of our biggest successes of that time, creating professional divers.

“Many of our current, and historical, diving team did their IDC with Emperor and, for the next few years at least as travel recovers from the pandemic, we expect there will be opportunities for the best new instructors to join our team or start their diving career elsewhere. We’ll ensure every candidate is given the best training possible.”

Emperor will be running two IDCs in 2022 with first taking place between July 10-17 and the second between November 27 and December 4 with the tuition available in English, German, Dutch or Arabic.

Visitors to Maldives no longer need to present a PCR test result on their arrival in the country.

An announcement by the Government of Maldives states anyone who has completed the prescribed dose of Covid-19 vaccine – as approved by the Maldives Food and Drug Authority or World Health Organisation – at least 14 days prior to arrival do not need to show they have tested negative for coronavirus.

However, children over one year old who are not eligible for vaccination and anyone who has not completed the prescribed dose will still have to present a negative PCR test within 96 hours of leaving their first point of embarkation.

Vaccinated travellers who visit residential islands, as opposed to resort islands, will no longer be required to present a PCR test before departure from the Maldives, however, a health declaration form must be completed 48 hours before departure to and return from the Maldives.

Emperor Divers managing director Alex Bryant said: “This is great news for travellers who are looking for less hassle and increased certainty when they travel. Maldives led the way with opening up to tourism in July 2020 and has yet again shown, when it comes to comfort of tourists, they are a world leader. We look forward to hosting many more clients in what is our 30th year."

	By Fabien Audibert

Welcome to the first edition of our new ‘My favourite.…’ series. Over the coming months, members of Emperor Divers’ staff will share their personal picks in which they describe the best moments, dives and itineraries they have experienced.

We would obviously love to hear from our friends and guests if you would like to let us know of your most memorable experiences.

To get us started, Emperor Indonesia’s operations manager Fabien Audibert describes his favourite itinerary – the incredible Ambon to Raja Ampat route.

After working in the diving industry in Indonesia for over 12 years there is one itinerary that, year after year, is consistently my favourite – Emperor’s Ambon to Raja Ampat trip.

Over 14 days the route takes in around 500 nautical miles of remote and pristine diving. From muck dives at Ambon Island we explore the historic Spice Islands and the Banda Sea in search of schooling hammerhead sharks, then we head north diving the rich waters of Misool, the southernmost part of Raja Ampat, making our way to Cape Kri and ending the adventure in Sorong, West Papua.

The shallow muck diving at Laha, Ambon is exceptional. It is the perfect place to start the trip and get the check dives completed. By the time we leave this area the underwater photographers on the boat have already managed to cross off a few rarities on their wish lists such as Rhinopias, seahorses, various unique nudibranchs and on occasion the ultra-rare psychedelic frogfish.

The history of this region is well documented. For well over 150 years it has been a hugely important area. Nutmeg and cloves largely drove the spice trade and these two, now widely-used, spices were originally worth more than their weight in gold and were found only on this group of islands.

The control of these islands was synonymous with extreme wealth and there were many gruesome battles between various factions attempting to control the spice monopoly. One of the most historically accurate, entertaining and easy reads I always recommend is Nathaniel’s Nutmeg by Giles Milton along with the BBC TV series The Spice Islands.

On arrival at the small Run Island - which, incidentally, the British swapped for Manhattan from the Dutch back in 1667 - I like to start the morning with some exceptional dives on deep walls decorated with huge Gorgonian sea fans.

These walls drop some 300-plus metres and you never know what you might see emerging from the depths. Our target species in this region is, of course, the hammerheads that gather in great numbers in these deep waters.

No one knows why, or for how long, they are here for as the conditions, due to the trade winds shifting, only allow safe access for a few weeks every year. After finishing the day’s diving we go ashore to visit the friendly locals and have a tour of the island’s historic buildings and their still productive nutmeg and clove plantations.

Pulau Neira, and its neighbouring volcano Gunung Api, are the next highlight with outstanding dive sites such as Lava Flow, Batu Kapal and an always surprising sunset Mandarin fish dive. Once again, there is no getting away from the dark but exciting history of these islands as we visit Fort Belgica and tour around the small museum filled with curious antiquities nestled amongst the colonial buildings that are still inhabited by friendly, local people to this day.

It’s an overnight sail to Nils Desperandum, the southernmost point of the itinerary. This very remote and extensive submerged reef often attracts large schools of hammerheads and other pelagic predators such as dogtooth tuna and great barracudas that prey on the shoals of fish that inhabit the rich coral reef here.

We start to head north stopping at Serua, an active volcano that is surrounded by some stunning coral reefs fringed by spectacular walls that plunge to the depths of the 6,000-metre Banda trench. It’s common to see the hammerheads coming into the shallow reefs, at a site rightly named Jackpot, to visit various cleaning stations here before heading out into the blue to join their cruising schools.

Next stop, after an overnight sail, is another volcanic island called Manuk. Featured on the BBC Blue Planet and Jonathan Bird’s Blue World and one of my favourite dives in Indonesia. This island is well known for being home to thousands of venomous but very placid sea snakes. It’s always amusing watching the dive guides taping up their board shorts and sleeves in fear of a visit from a curious snake.

Along with the slithery residents there are some fascinating dive sites such as Bubble Reef where you can swim amongst warm, hydrothermal vents with small bubbles rising from the substrate. “It’s like diving in Champagne!” is often heard after dives here. Coconut Point also provides another opportunity to see hammerheads before we start to move further north east to Koon Island.

Koon Island is about 10k east of Ceram Island. The journey between Manuk and Koon can be very good for spotting whales and dolphins. Sperm and Blue whales migrate through these waters at this time of year. The stunning white sand idyllic tropical islands house some beautiful reefs with large schools of batfish, barracudas and thousands of butterfly fish pulsing off the reefs. We have had good encounters with both hawksbill and green turtles here.

Crossing the Ceram Sea into the Misool area of Raja Ampat, home of the richest and most biodiverse reefs in the world. This region consists of more than 1,500 islands, more than 1,600 species of fish - with over 35 endemic to these waters - along with over 600 different kinds of coral of which more than 40 are also endemic to this region. It is possible to observe at least 16 different species of whale or dolphins feeding seasonally in the nutrient rich waters here.

There is an outrageous number of world-class dive sites here, all due to the hard work of the Misool Eco Resort team.

This area is fully protected and patrolled by rangers keeping a sharp eye out for poachers. I always make sure we include Shadow Reef (Karang Bayangan) - one of only a handful of dive sites worldwide that attracts both Oceanic and Reef mantas to the abundance of cleaning stations on top of the pinnacle.

Other sites in this area that have become favourites of mine over the years are Boo Window, Four Kings and Nudi Rock. Due the high level of protection, white tip, black tip and grey reef sharks are seen on nearly every dive.

In the far-east corner of the Misool islands is a cluster of pinnacles that unassumingly break the surface, known has Daram. Here I have had some of the best underwater photography dives with clients.

The likes of Candy Store, Many Colours, Andy’s Wet Dream (yes, really!) provide dramatic walls and crevices lined with huge Gorgonian fans, healthy soft corals and schools of fusiliers charging between with hungry trevallies in hot pursuit. On safety stops here we are often entertained by some curious batfish or the local herd of bumphead parrotfish.

For the more adventurous, and if conditions are right, I always visit Jellyfish Lake. Over thousands of years these golden jellyfish have lost the need for their stingers as they have no predators in these brackish waters and no need to feed on other animals.

This species spends much of their lives on the move during a daily migration that follows the sun’s arc across the sky. Solar rays nourish essential, algae-like organisms called zooxanthellae which live symbiotically in the jellies’ tissues and provide their hosts with energy as a by-product of their photosynthesis.

Before sunrise, the jellies cluster along the saltwater lake’s western shore. Each morning around 6am, when dawn brightens the eastern sky, they begin to swim toward the light. Pumping water through their bells, these jellyfish use a type of jet propulsion to follow the sunlight until they nearly reach the eastern shore - stopping just short of the shadows caused by lakeside trees. If it has been raining or is overcast the likelihood of seeing the jellies is very slim. It has difficult access and is really only good for fit and healthy customers. It’s advisable to send a drone over the lake from the boat first to see if there are any jellies.

Cape Kri is the next stop after an overnight trip to the central area of Raja Ampat. Cape Kri is unique as it holds the world record for the largest number of species (283) referenced in one single dive by ichthyologist Dr Gerald Allen. Sites here include Manusar, Yenbuba Jetty and Sawondarek.

We can always have a barbecue in the evening at Mios Kon Island after a day’s diving at Kri and the following day I like to round the trip off with two final dives at Blue Magic in the Dampier Strait.

This place amazes me every time I dive it. Falling tide, rising tide, slack tide none of them disappoint. Large schools of bigeye trevally, pickhandle barracuda and batfish surround the easily-navigable submerged pinnacle. When the tide is running the blooming Dendronephthya corals are like large wedding bouquets blasting colour around the dive site. And with the current come the Oceanic mantas in for a clean while there are Wobbegong sharks under almost every ledge.

What a memorable way to end the trip.

A new year, a new diving centre! We are back and fully open in Sharm el Sheikh.

We know thousands of you have dived with us in Sharm over the years, but in the past we've been a bit nomadic and only run a small operation.

However, last year we had the opportunity to take on the best-located dive centre in the whole of Sharm - the historical base in the Marina Sharm Hotel (formerly Helnan Marina Sharm Hotel) on the Southern corner of Na'ama Bay.

We worked closely with the previous - and excellent - owners Werner Lau and Sinai Divers to take on their staff and add another chapter to this famous centre.

The diving centre has direct access to Na'ama Bay as its housereef, and the jetty many of you will used before to board our boats Shorouk and Marcus is a two-minute walk away.

Now Ali, Elise and the team are already welcoming divers back to the warm, clear pristine reefs of Sharm, Tiran and Ras Mohamed - regarded by many as the best daily diving in the whole Red Sea.

Flights are regular from the UK and Europe and there are scores of hotels of every standard available within walking distance to the centre or further afield if you prefer.

It is a hugely exciting step for us in a fantastic location – as our Red Sea General Manager Luke Atkinson explained.

"Sharm el Sheikh got a reputation for astonishing diving because of the quality and variety on offer.

Each single distinct area - whether Tiran, the coastal reefs of Sharm or the walls of Ras Mohamed - would be enough to call a destination 'amazing'. To have all three in one destination is simply sensational.

It's hard to pick highlights in a destination so blessed with quality diving, but The SS Thistlegorm is an underwater museum and widely regarded as one of the best wrecks in the world.

The fish schooling event of Ras Mohamed in summer is truly world class, with walls of snapper, barracuda, batfish and many other species as they choose this one special area to mate."

We're back and better than ever!

One of the highlights of 2022 – our 30th anniversary year – for Emperor Divers will be the launch of our beautiful new boat Harmoni.

She will offer a truly new experience to liveaboard holidays allowing guests to experience the sense of sailing the Indonesian seas in freedom, style and comfort.

Built in a traditional Indonesian phinisi style, she is constructed from ironwood and nearly all by hand on the beaches.

Traditional, engineless phinisi boats have been in use in the Indonesian Archipelago since the early 20th century but have a rich evolutionary history that can be traced back to the ancient trade routes as early as the 8th century.

Previously used as cargo vessels with sails and ranging from 20 to 500 tonnes, it wasn’t until the 1980s that engines started to be installed.

With Harmoni, we are very fortunate to have a legend of boat construction leading our team.

Ask anyone about boat building in Indonesia and they will have heard of Pak Haji Abdul Wahab.

Hailing from Tanah Beru in South Sulawesi - the home of skilled Bugis boat builders for centuries - he is an extremely humble man considering the wealth of knowledge he holds and the outstanding reputation he carries.

For more than 30 years Pak Haji has been constructing the most beautiful wooden vessels in Indonesia using hand tools and traditional techniques - our very own schooner Emperor Raja Laut being one of them.

Understandably he grows very attached to the vessel during a build process that can take up to four years depending on size. He puts his whole soul into each and every splinter of wood – so it goes without saying why we asked him to construct Harmoni.

She has been designed by divers for divers, taking into consideration Indonesia's unique and diverse conditions and harnessing the Emperor Indonesia team's extensive experience in liveaboard and charter vessels.

One of only a select few liveaboards in this region to have two engines, at 48m she happily welcomes 24 guests over 12 cabins in spacious surroundings and will meet the very highest standards and expectations of today’s divers.

Harmoni boasts an open rooftop sundeck for that all important suntan or relaxing sunset cocktails while the dive deck is situated at the stern of the vessel with easy access to the tenders leaving the front deck open for shaded relaxation in-between dives.

There are four master cabins on the top deck and eight superior cabins on the lower deck all with air-conditioning, en-suite bathrooms and hot water. The main deck houses the galley, restaurant, bar and lounge area.

She really is going to be a thing of absolute beauty – and we can’t wait to share her with you.

The scheduled first trip is in September going from Bali to Komodo. It will provide a great opportunity to cruise from Bali and take in the wonderful scenery of Moyo Island, Sumbawa and Sangean Volcano before reaching Komodo National Park.

Emperor Divers has its 30th anniversary this year so, as part of the celebrations, we will take you through our history chronologically with #30yearsin30weeks.

Starting today, at the very beginning, every Tuesday for the next 30 weeks we will move a year forward in time and take you through the amazing history of your favourite dive company.

A lot of Sakaras have been drunk in the past three decades so there are a few hazy memories. Forgive us if we make any mistakes by a year or so. It’s a bit of fun and should be mostly correct, but it’s not scripture!

So to 1992 - the year Emperor Divers was founded.

Terry and Theresa Simpson were introduced to Jim Yanny and Andy Telford at the UK Dive Show in the Olympia, and the partnership was formed.

The initial tanks, compressors and equipment were bought immediately after at Mike’s Dive Store in London and sent by container to Egypt.

It arrived late in 1992, and the founders moved with it to Egypt, in preparation to set up what would be the very first Emperor Divers centre in Hurghada.

As we go progress through our history please share your pictures and memories of the special times you have had with us. We are on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, or you can email us on pred@emperordivers.com. As peak season comes to a close in Egypt, Emperor’s safari guide Sonia Goggel reflects on an 18-month period during which she’s experienced diving in near solitude before the joy of having normality return to the Red Sea.

It was with great pleasure that we saw the first planes landing in Hurghada in July 2020 and diving activities slowly starting again in the Red Sea.

In this new era of learning to live with the Coronavirus pandemic, companies suffered greatly but divers and dive guides were highly rewarded.

It was a time of half-full liveaboards and hardly anyone else on world-famous dive sites like the Thistlegorm, Ras Mohamed, Tiran, the Brothers, Daedalus and Elphinstone.

Even in the high season, in late autumn, we had two consecutive weeks of diving in which we did not see another boat on any site. It was a huge joy for us and our guests.

Many dive sites visibly profited from reduced diving activities. The soft corals and density of anthias at the Brothers Islands were, and still are, absolutely extraordinary. We also had sightings of special marine life such as a couple of Mola-Mola at the north-west tip of the Little Brother in December.

However, the density of Oceanic whitetip shark at the Brothers and Daedalus - and even at Elphinstone - was much lower at the end of 2020 than in previous years, probably due to the reduced amount of boats.

The beginning of the year is always slow with dry dock and maintenance time, but with spring a steady growth in the numbers of countries opening up to Egypt was noticeable and with it a rising amount of divers coming back to our beloved Red Sea.

Even the most reluctant European countries had offers of direct flights by autumn and with them a sense of normality finally returned to our Egyptian Red Sea diving atmosphere.

There were full boats (except for a quarantine cabin) and dive sites with a more normal volume of boats and divers. Many friends who had been visiting us every year for as long as we can remember, and who had to stay at home for almost two years, finally returned to diving in the Red Sea.

Seeing each other again and sharing diving experiences was sheer bliss.

We are all in desperate need of normality and of the social interaction with dear friends - above and below the waves - we missed for such a long time.

With growing numbers of divers the Oceanic whitetip sharks also returned in large numbers, mainly to Elphinstone where we have had some superb close encounters this year but also to Daedalus and the Brothers.

We enjoyed our schooling hammerheads at Daedalus this year through spring and summer. At Elphinstone we also had sightings of hammerheads while the Brothers, of course, had its cornucopia of hammerheads, threshers, grey reefs, oceanics and silky sharks!

Even though some of my most treasured diving moments in the last year and a half were to dive the Thistlegorm, Ras Mohamed, Tiran, Abu Nuhas, the Brothers, Daedalus and Elphinstone with only five or ten other divers, seeing normality arriving back to the Red Sea is highly satisfying.

And being able to share the miraculous Red Sea diving with old friends again is an immense delight!

With advent now under way, plans for the festive period are starting to take shape. However, if turkey and all the trimmings leaves you a little cold, it’s not too late to seal your escape to the beautiful Maldives.

There is still time to fly into Male on one of the many scheduled airlines, join one of our six vessels and start diving with the manta rays, grey reef sharks and the host of other pelagic the Maldives has to offer.

Our Best of the Maldives itinerary takes you to the wonderful and most famous sites in a beautiful week of liveaboard diving across Male, Ari and Vaavu atolls.

Awaiting you are channels, pinnacles and cleaning stations where you have every chance of meeting mantas, a variety of sharks and mesmerising marine life of so many varieties.

You really get up close at the cleaning stations without disturbing the locals! One of the best-known dive sites is Fish Head; a marine protected site. This medium-size pinnacle has many resident turtles, huge schools of fusiliers being stalked by trevally and patrolling grey reef sharks. Overhangs and a large school of blue line snapper, the iconic reef fish of the Maldives, make this a genuinely great dive.

Other fantastic experiences this trip offers include the chance to swim with whale sharks at night and the world-famous Alimatha jetty night dive where the hunting nurse sharks, trevally and massive stingrays will keep you enthralled for the full dive.

However, if Christmas plans are already in place then January could be the perfect time to get away. Starting 2022 with some big shark action on our Deep South Southern Sharks itinerary would be an amazing way to open the new year.

This itinerary takes you diving the southerly Maldivian atolls, allowing you to experience the shark action in the more remote sites between Huvadhoo and Addu Atolls.

Spend a week away from the madding crowds and dive Fuvahmulah and Huvadhoo on the lookout for some of the Indian Ocean’s larger residents; tiger sharks, silver tips, grey reef sharks, whale sharks, silky sharks and maybe even a Mola-Mola.

Huvadhoo offers many world class channels including Vilingilli, Koodoo, Nilandhoo and Mareehaa - all teaming with sharks and pelagic gems.

In Fuvahmulah you can expect to meet tiger, silky, silver tip and thresher sharks on the south plateau while Addu Atoll hosts the World War Two wreck HMS British Loyalty as well as majestic manta cleaning station Maa Kandu.

And with a more relaxing drift dive at Demon corner to either start or end the trip with, surely there is no better present to give yourself this Christmas?
