Happy New Year – now is a time to reflect, to set intentions; a time to reset, and if you’re feeling courageous or adventuresome, a perfect time for making transitions. What are you hoping for this year? What support might you need to show up as your most authentic self and achieve what you desire?

I had to face these same questions in the past year. I felt on the cusp of major change, yet held back by my resistance to it. I’ve found financial security and professional success as an expert witness consultant and career counselor, but I was working at an unsustainable pace and paying a high price with my health. Ultimately, I realized how shockingly out of alignment I was. I longed to be more of service and recognized that the most fulfilling part of my job was working with women in transition – primarily women going through divorce and facing reentry into the workforce as well as those seeking more purpose and balance in their lives. I knew a similar feeling leading Enneagram panels and being witness to someone’s “ah ha” moment of awareness. My own clarity led me to stop procrastinating (yes, I am a 9) and step toward a new career.

It is with excitement, and a dose of trepidation, that I am announcing my transition to becoming a professional coach. It feels stressful to move into the unknown and reassuring knowing a new destination awaits. Luckily, I have the gift of my community, a peer coach, and long-time teachers whose collective wisdom I can rely on. Navigating transitions is a tightrope walk requiring tremendous balance, but I am not doing it alone, and you don’t have to either.

How many of you can relate to the stress that accompanies transition?

What are you willing to explore this year to be in alignment with your essential self?

In 2019, our Enneagram Panel Series is focusing on stress – the stress that comes with change and uncertainty, from external demands and events, and also the stress that comes from feeling inertia or being unfulfilled in some aspect of our life. We will explore how each Enneagram type shows up under stress and also the impact chronic stressors have on our capacity to connect with our essential self. Through these monthly panels, we are reminded that we are more alike than different and stronger together than we are alone. When we are grounded in our bodies, we have access to deep, meaningful receptivity and vulnerability. This is our real work and it takes practice. Margot, along with co-leader Mary Ellen Arthur, invite you to join us the fourth Wednesday of every month for an Enneagram panel – starting with Type One on January 23rd. We meet at St. Thomas Episcopal Church at 22nd and Dexter in Denver from 6:30 to 8:00 pm and ask for a $20 donation.

Contact Margot to learn more about the Denver monthly panel group or to inquire about how professional coaching will create the change you envision for your life.

Renée and Margot have just returned from Vallambrosa, the retreat center where the Enneagram in the Narrative Tradition is taught, studied and practice by individuals from all over the world. This particular weekend brought a group who have joined a learning community, individuals who brought their unique perspectives, their stories, their fears and desires, and formed a collective. There is tremendous power in a group. Together we experienced joy, tears, shifts, and laughter. Supported by the group and the wisdom of the Enneagram, each of us found our courage, our power, our voice, and our grace. We are a collective, each with our unique viewpoint, but in the end, more alike than different.

Of course, we had to leave the safe haven of Vallambrosa and our group and return to our lives. We returned to the bills on the dining room table, a spouse craving our attention, a deadline moved up a week, and, in Margot’s case her son’s socks on the floor and dog poop in the entryway…..this is life. We return to the fact that we are in a new month, in a new year, one that has brought tumultuous changes that are disturbing and challenging to many of us. How can we, all of us, whether we have a learning community or not, experience these moments and notice when our type patterns have got us in a stronghold? The Five wants to retreat, the Nine to binge-watch all her recorded shows, the Seven to plan his next adventure. How can we find the courage to take a breath and pause – to take a moment to stay connected to what it is we need and want in a moment of discomfort? This is the Enneagram in everyday life. Our work toward enhanced awareness of ourselves continues no matter what is going on in our lives.

It is now March and spring is approaching. Many of us set intentions or resolutions at the beginning of the new year. How is that going for you? Are you keeping your word to yourself? Can you pause? Make space for your meditation? Having the Enneagram is a powerful tool for making shifts in our life. When we understand our motivations, we can start to access our inner observer. We can more quickly notice when we are hooked by our patterns and our stories. As a collective force, we can move together with graceful, compassionate purpose in the everyday of our lives.

If you live in the Denver area and want to connect with a community to use the Enneagram practice in your everyday life, both Margot and Renée have ongoing study groups and workshops. On March 18th and again on June 10th, Margot will be leading Everyday Enneagram, a program for understanding how this system can be utilized in real time, in real life. The March 18th program’s registration is open until March 10th. Renée has two upcoming classes on March 11th and April 8th so check out these classes on the website for more information and to register online for all classes. We hope you’ll join us in exploring this amazing system!

This phrase, “feelings are not emergencies,” was uttered to me over twenty years ago by my clinical group supervisor. I was just out of graduate school and had begun a private psychotherapy practice. She was helping us to mediate our responses to client’s intense emotions. It was easy to feel like they were emergencies! We’ve actually learned a lot since then about working with our bodies and emotional states and I am grateful.

In any case, it’s still a great reminder as we often experience feelings as emergencies. Why do feelings and emotions scare us so much? Obviously, they can make us feel very vulnerable. We may get overwhelmed, shake, cry, get angry, and sometimes they evoke a sense that there is something wrong with us. Why am I feeling this way? What’s wrong with me?However, they are treasures. Really? Really. They can be invitations into our depths, the essential aspects of who we are beyond the type structure. Buried treasure. Learning how to move toward our inner experience, diving into the body rather than running for the hills, accessing resources as needed, we may find truth, beauty and love. Really? Really.

A woman I’ll call Betty, who has the One type pattern, was sitting on a panel in one of my classes earlier in the year. She was describing the sadness she felt regarding a move that took her granddaughter across the country. Betty loves her dearly and misses her. She had barely dipped into the painful feelings when she popped out of them describing her conscious practice of avoiding the “disintegration” move (to Four) by putting a positive spin on her situation, consciously working with the “integration” move (to Seven). “I have so much to be grateful for and that’s what I try to focus on.” How can we argue with this good practice?

Yet I asked her to pause and give some space to the feelings of sadness. Betty replied that she really tries to not go there ”“ it’s the disintegration move. I invited her to consciously notice the feelings in her body, which was foreign to her. Still she accepted the invitation and made some space for them. They relaxed a bit. She was surprised. I then shared the importance of our feelings.

If you know me, you know how important I believe it is to FEEL THE FEELINGS IN YOUR BODY. Some Enneagram thought has us avoiding the energies of our stress (sometimes called the disintegration) point. Warning ”“ do not go there ”“ consciously move to your security point, the integration point! That will help you grow! I hear this and cringe.

From my point of view, here’s the helpful and the unhelpful aspects of this perspective.

Helpful: you are conscious, observing your patterns, and choosing how to respond. This is very, very good! So much of our Enneagram work is about developing the Inner Observer, the capacity to be present and choose how we pay attention and to what, rather than being pulled into automatic. Very helpful!

Unhelpful: you are avoiding part of yourself and your authentic experience. This cuts you off from your wholeness, the intelligence of one of the types/centers, and creates a fancy new defense against something in you perceived as wrong, Not helpful!

As a Two, my stress point is Eight. When I access the Eight energy consciously, I set boundaries, I know what feels right for me in my body, I speak my truth. Why would I avoid that? If I’m conscious, which is the premise I’m speaking from, why would I avoid these capacities? The Eight energies are a gift to me.

If we’re using the Enneagram to its fullest potential, we are accessing the Inner Observer, our open hearts and feelings, and being receptive to the felt sense in the body. We are growing consciousness, developing the capacity for greater choice and the capacity to directly relate to our authentic experiences. I say, get rid of nothing!!! Use it all!!! Explore yourself!!! Be curious!!! Allow all the parts of you, consciously, and you will transform.

I remember being in therapy for the first time in my mid-twenties. For a year and a half, I shared the suffering of my tendency to over-give and feel unappreciated. I shared the deep sense of shame I felt. The day is etched in my memory when I realized I was giving to get. The moment that awareness dawned, I realized my giving was often manipulative. I was the consummate dealmaker but it had been totally unconscious. I felt horrified and exhilarated. Then I felt the budding of possibility and freedom. Yet I didn’t have a framework to connect this awareness and for the most part, the status quo continued ”“ giving to get. It wasn’t until I discovered the Enneagram that all the pieces fell into place.

Call this life a roller coaster or a journey, it is filled with ups and downs, light and dark. I have been an Enneagram student for nearly 20 years now and, quite honestly, it has acted as both seat belt and ejection seat. Buddha said that fundamentally the source of suffering and harm is ignorance. When we find our Enneagram type, we often feel the pain of awareness: the pain of discovering our misperceptions and deeper motivations, and the dismantling of the conscious image we’ve held of ourselves. Yet it gives us the opportunity to suffer less as we discover both the challenges and the blessings of our character structure. We feel the possibility of change and freedom.

It would still be some years until someone gifted me Helen Palmer’s tape series on the Enneagram. When I heard her description of the Two and the interviews with people called the Giver, awareness broke like the sun on summer day. There was a reason I did what I did! There were others like me! There wasn’t something wrong with me at all! What a gift!

This is the gift of the Enneagram in the Narrative Tradition. We find ourselves listening to others, sharing our own stories, and we find ourselves in good company. We are not alone on this roller coaster. We may be surprised, at first, to also find compassion both as we listen and share. This is really, really good company.

The Enneagram in the Narrative Tradition has served me continuously since that first tape from Helen. I find myself deepening in a system that continuously evolves as I do. I’m still a Giver, and I can still get caught in the habit of amplifying others needs over my own. But now I have options. I can see it, breathe into my own body for grounding, and extend kindness from my heart to my inner experience. The lights are on more than they are off. I suffer less. I live more authentically and laugh at myself more often. I can discern the difference between true generosity and giving to get. I love more fully. It’s a great journey and I’m grateful to be a teacher in this amazing Narrative Enneagram along with fabulous cohorts dressed as students and teachers alike. We are different and we are the same. We are good company.

Why the Enneagram Intensive?

The Enneagram Intensive is being brought to your backyard for the first time in a structure that fits with your life. The Intensive is a deep dive into the system that offers a key to open doors to your inner life, your professional life, and your relationships. It allows the time to fully experience the Enneagram from all your intelligences ”“ body, heart and mind. In a nutshell, it allows you to inquire into yourself and others from a heartfelt space of Actively Aware Presence. The Intensive is also the springboard to traveling deeper within the system, giving you a rich tradition and community to continue your psychological and spiritual journey personally and/or professionally. And you’ll be in good company.

It’s the end of the year and I want to write something insightful and inspiring. It needs to be authentic, witty, and touching too. It’s how I set myself up when I think about having time off. I want to be contemplative and playful, have solitude and good company, meditate and watch movies. In other words, I usually want EVERYTHING AT ONCE.

When I pause, like at the end of the year, I realize what I want is to BE HERE NOW. Okay that’s pretty insightful, and not original, but it’s what every contemplative practice points to and what I want. The qualities I listed at the top of this writing happen for me when I relax into my body, open heart and mind, right here and now with whatever is happening. And if I can share this others along the journey, it’s immeasurably better.

I am a student of the Enneagram in the Narrative Tradition for a very good reason. There are no better teachers than you.
I am a teacher of the Enneagram in the Narrative Tradition for a very good reason. There are no better students than you.
I love the Narrative Tradition. We’re all in this together, on this planet at this time, trying to become more conscious, more embodied, and more loving.
I am truly, humbly grateful.

May 2013 bring you greater clarity and commitment to your own inspirations and passions. My advice, pick something, not everything.

Ah resistance, my friend. You come in many disguises and sometimes I don’t recognize you. As a core aspect of ego, I love to hate you, to blame you, to wave my fists in your face. Not only is it difficult to spot you, but my fist waving often blurs my vision. لعبة كونكر The inner struggle hidden in stories of this and that.

This morning I found you and, more importantly, uncovered your wisdom. As a Heart type, I feel bone-weary from a lifetime of making things happen. There’s always something to DO about something. Someone needs something – jump into action. شرح لعبة كونكر بالتفصيل There’s another project to be completed – a call to arms. I could be more fit or creative or funny or smart – start another self-improvement program.

Allowing myself to fall into the weariness that clothes resistance, in my body, in the moment, I find the vulnerability, the tenderness that lies at the core of resistance. I want to scoop you up now and cradle you in my arms. I want to offer resistance not my fists but my love.

As the tenderness of my open, receptive heart uncurls fists, I find release and these words. I discover, again, the possibility of DOING from an alignment with a more authentic self. The inspiration and commitment to evolution that is my deepest desire when I align with full-bodied and heartfelt awareness of what I do. It’s not about not doing, but it is about what I’m aligning with in my body, heart and mind. This will be a discernment I will practice time and time again. kuwait casino A constant rebalancing as I continue to grow, to transform in Love with resistance as my guide.

One day I was working with a client on her difficulties with trust and my attention was drawn to how my arm rested on the chair. I just allowed it to rest there, and you know what, it felt like a somatic experience of trust. To just let things be, trusting the support that is there.

This may seem too simple but we trust little things all the time. Rather than leaping into a big idea of trust, when to do it, when not, it is possible to cultivate a feeling or a quality in our bodies and hearts, creating a cascade of change throughout our entire being. I decided to start working with trust in my HeartMath and Mindfulness practices.

HeartMath has been researching the science of the heart and the impact of emotions on overall health and well-being for over twenty years. The heart has neural pathways and it remembers, just like the brain. It can also develop new neural pathways, again, just like the brain. The heart could be compared to the conductor of an orchestra. Its rhythmic patterns are extremely important to how we experience ourselves in any given moment, influencing all our bodily systems, and having a profound impact on our ability to be resilient, flexible and creative, improving physical, emotional, and mental health.

As a Social Two, the fact that I had difficulty trusting was buried in my unconscious. Knowing the Enneagram, I was often aware of the motivations of others and the general nature of their reactivity, giving me a sense of capacity to navigate the world. I understood and had compassion. I was trusting.

Yet I was also aware of my tendency to tinker, tend, and manage my sphere of influence, but had not made the connection that it was a lack of trust. It never ceases to amaze me how many times I can rediscover an aspect of my type concerns as if it’s the first time.

After grounding in my deep belly, I would practice with that original, somatic experience of trust. I allowed myself to feel my hands rest in my lap and then allowed my mind to settle in that same way, in my heart. Every now and then, I would repeat the word trust silently. A soft smile would often arise in response as I gently slid into an overall feeling of trust.

I practiced daily for six months and noticed the tendency to tinker and manage diminish. I would sometimes watch the old desire to “help” arise and then watch it dissipate as I rested in a deeper quality of trust. Another layer of my Two type strategies have eased. I know there is more to come and await the next discovery of self/Self that comes in the continuing journey of my life, my type, and the mystery of it all. I look forward to sharing more deeply at the Conference on the capacity to cultivate our hearts.

(this post is by my friend and colleague Terry Saracino who has written deeply on the beauty of the Narrative Tradition)

May 8, 1989 Santa Fe, New Mexico I found myself sitting in a circle with 25 others from around the country in a beautiful room with windows all around for a week-long course on the Enneagram. This would be the first time I met Helen Palmer and her teaching assistants — representatives of the nine types. The Enneagram had caught my heart a few months earlier in Denver when my first teacher had animatedly described the types in vivid detail for a full weekend. But, as this week unfolded and I watched Helen interview the types, I knew with certainty that this was how I wanted to teach the Enneagram.

Why was it so powerful back then and still is today? How do we as teachers and students of the Narrative Tradition articulate this to others? As we grow into our new nonprofit structure and redesign our website, we are asking the questions “Who are we?” “How are we different from other Enneagram schools?” The simple answer is the Narrative Tradition.

Oral transmission of information and wisdom is as old as human civilization. A few years ago I came upon a useful description of “orality” in a dissertation on the Jamaican Rastafari by Dr. Jeanne Christensen, a friend and colleague of mine who is a professor at the University of Colorado. She writes:

“Orality”¦is immediate, because sound cannot be paused. It disappears as soon as it is uttered. It is active”¦dynamic”¦a total expression. Reading is an isolated individualistic expression. The oral tradition, on the other hand, commands not only the storyteller, but the audience to complete the community. Orality is a process, movement, experience rather than an imperious permanence.”

Dr. Christensen’s description of orality resonates with me and holds several keys to understanding the power of the Narrative. It is a process, not a technique. It is dynamic, always changing. And it involves a community, a “field” created between the person whose story is being told and the listening audience. In a word, it is alive.

The Narrative Tradition, based on interviewing and interacting, is a process and invites us into a relationship with our inner territory. We use the content of the Enneagram and make an experience of it. When we describe our patterns on panels using our capacity for self-observation, we began to see them differently. We get some distance from them. Underlying motivations become clearer. Something clicks. Our patterns begin to loosen. As we try to make ourselves clear to the audience, we gain more insight. Insight is an essential first step toward change. Working with the insights we glean on panels helps us make the necessary changes that grow our souls. تصفيات اليورو 2024

Kinship among panelists develops from mutual sharing and recognition. It is an enormous relief to be in the company of people who understand us because their stories are so similar to ours. Their openness, insight and self-acceptance give us courage to accept our weaknesses and embrace our strengths. We learn how others work with the same behavior patterns, and that supports us. When I thank people who come from the community for taking the time to share their stories on panels, they almost invariably say to me, “I learned so much. spin palace casino Thank you for asking me to come!”

A compassionate audience is also an important part of the Narrative method. We use the practice of following the breath “in and down” so as to be as present as possible to the panelists in all centers – grounded, open hearted, and open minded. The audience receives what is shared and is impacted by it. They may react to what is shared either positively or negatively, but their response teaches them.

All of us have had the experience of suddenly understanding hidden motivations: “That’s why they act like that, not just to get under my skin! It’s how they see the world.” I remember listening to a Five panel years ago. In a difficult relationship with a Five at the time, I shed tears of understanding as the panelists demonstrated their difficulty coming forward and connecting. Phrases such as: “I had to withdraw. I was afraid that they were going to steal my soul” were spoken. This understanding helped me depersonalize my reaction. My relationship was no longer so painful to me. When we see the reasons why others act the way they do, our hearts open and we can never see the person or the type in the same way again. The first line in my notes from that workshop in Santa Fe is “Improves human relationships almost immediately.” So true.

Being part of a narrative audience builds compassionate presence. By listening to others in a compassionate way, we begin to open ourselves. Remember a time from one of your trainings when the room got quiet, you could feel a palpable presence in the room, and something shifted. In that movement we extend beyond our limited awareness ”“ not just cognitively, but also emotionally and somatically ”“ to obtain (for a moment, at least) a glimpse of the greater reality of existence. “Transforming lives, creating a more compassionate world,” the tag line of our organization, is not just words, but truly what happens in our work.

The methodology of the Narrative Tradition grounds the Enneagram in the experiences of thousands of individuals and validates the objective reality of the map. Helen’s first book outlined the key themes that emerged after years of interviews with panelists. We continue to use the experiences of panelists to validate the map and deepen and enrich its lessons.

The “field” created in teaching this way offers a different experience from reading. The Enneagram becomes three-dimensional, embodied in the form of a particular person and story. You hear the words as well as get a sense of the nonverbals of type. While we are each unique representatives of type with our own personal story, the energetic blueprints of type become evident as we observe. In a closing circle in the Enneagram Intensive a few years ago, a participant shared: “The Enneagram has turned from an idea into real people. Now, it’s a real, living, breathing model for me.”

Ultimately, we are all each other’s teachers. David Daniels speaks about the Narrative method as being a democratic process. It is not a hierarchical system. We get away from the mode of “I’m the teacher; you’re the student. I know and you don’t.” We are always learning and benefiting from the wisdom of each other. Self-discovery is key.

The Enneagram is not “an imperious permanence” but a dynamic map, and the stories of thoughtful, articulate and self-aware individuals are among the most fertile sources of its growth over time. It is through these sacred stories we share with each other that our souls grow and we develop more compassion for others. باي بلاي Through this method, our minds gain insight and understanding, our hearts are touched, and our bodies experience the energies of the types. I knew then as I know now, more than ever, that the Narrative Tradition is how I want to teach the Enneagram.

Note: I would like to thank Carole Whittaker for our conversation in October 2010, which planted the seeds for some of these reflections.

Most of us dream of being able to simply BE in the present moment, meeting reality as it is right then, without the preamble of past experience or the pull of future plans. جدول ونتائج الألعاب الأولمبية لعام 2024 We’ve all had these experiences unbidden, when time seems to stop and we are simply and fully present. Like when we laugh, we are not reviewing or fantasizing about anything other than being in the full body experience in that moment.

Understanding our type structures, we begin to recognize the patterns that pull is into the past or the future by our conditioned survival strategies. These strategies are not wrong or bad, on the contrary, we need them to attend to daily life. معلومات عن فريق بايرن ميونخ But the Inner Observer, the aspect of your awareness that is always in the present moment and reflecting that, is an evolutionary miracle that allows us to have choice in what we attend to. So we can CHOOSE to go to past, present or future. We can CHOOSE to BE PRESENT, in our minds, hearts, and bodies to reality as it actually is. And when we are, and the heart is open, the mind alert and the body receptive, we stumble upon compassion. We are PASSIONATELY WITH reality as it is.
