Join us on a journey through the best ways to experience the vibrant foliage of the Granite State.

1. Scenic Drives: One of the quintessential ways to witness the autumn spectacle in New Hampshire is by embarking on a scenic drive. The state is adorned with a network of winding roads that traverse mountains, valleys, and forests, providing awe-inspiring views at every turn. The Kancamagus Highway, often called “The Kanc,” is a favorite among leaf-peepers. This 34.5-mile route takes you through the White Mountain National Forest, offering breathtaking vistas and plenty of pull-off spots for photos.

2. Hiking Adventures: For those who seek a more immersive experience, hiking in New Hampshire during the fall is a treat. Trails like the Franconia Ridge Loop and the Appalachian Trail boast stunning vistas that showcase the vibrant foliage, with the added bonus of crisp mountain air and the satisfying crunch of fallen leaves beneath your feet. Be sure to check trail conditions and prepare accordingly.

3. Cruise on a Lake: To see the fiery foliage from a unique perspective, consider taking a cruise on one of New Hampshire’s pristine lakes. Lake Winnipesaukee, Squam Lake, and Lake Sunapee all offer boat tours in the fall. The reflection of the colorful leaves on the water’s surface creates a magical and serene atmosphere.

4. Visit State Parks: New Hampshire is home to numerous state parks that come alive with autumn colors. Franconia Notch State Park, with its iconic Flume Gorge, and Crawford Notch State Park are particularly popular destinations. These parks offer hiking trails, waterfalls, and interpretive centers to enhance your leaf-peeping adventure.

5. Rail and Aerial Adventures: Consider taking a scenic train ride or a gondola lift to capture sweeping views of the landscape blanketed in fall foliage. The Mount Washington Cog Railway and the Cannon Mountain Aerial Tramway provide excellent vantage points to appreciate the vibrant colors from above.

6. Apple Picking and Pumpkin Farms: Autumn in New Hampshire is also the season for apple picking and exploring pumpkin farms. Head to local orchards like Gould Hill Farm or Carter Hill Orchard to pick apples straight from the trees. These excursions offer a delightful blend of outdoor fun and the chance to bring home some delicious, fresh produce.

7. Fall Festivals: Throughout the autumn season, New Hampshire hosts a variety of fall festivals and events celebrating the harvest and foliage. From craft fairs to pumpkin festivals, these gatherings offer a taste of local culture and a chance to soak in the autumn atmosphere.

Conclusion: New Hampshire’s autumn foliage is a natural masterpiece that draws visitors from far and wide. To fully appreciate the vibrant tapestry of colors, you can choose from a range of activities, from leisurely drives and hikes to boat tours and festive gatherings. Whichever way you decide to explore the autumn colors of New Hampshire, you’re sure to create lasting memories and fall in love with the state’s enchanting beauty all over again. So, pack your camera and a warm sweater, and get ready to embrace the magic of autumn in the Granite State.

Garden enthusiasts and art lovers recommend that you see the garden twice, in the afternoon and before 10.00am the next day. You'll experience a completely different place, goverened by changes in the light!

France’s Famous Garden Setting

It’s famous, of course, for the water lilies, but if you go to Claude Monet’s garden at Giverny in Normandy, what you are likely to remember most is the Clos Normand. This is the part of the garden closest to the painter’s house, and beside its gravel paths, the beds are a riot of colour and texture. It’s like walking through a 3 dimensional painting made up of hundreds of colours. And this wonderful place is just a short journey outside Paris – and flights to Paris are fast and frequent.

Monet’s Garden

Nobody knows for sure if Monet intended the garden to look like this, but we know that Monet loved gardening. “Apart from painting and gardening, I’m good for nothing!” he once exclaimed. Weeds and brambles took over when he was gone and, despite photographs and work from various family members, what you see now is a homage, not a faithful reproduction. It’s also the product of a mind-boggling amount of work. Nine hundred varieties of annuals are planted every year in an endless cycle of digging, trailing, pruning and mulching.

In May, the responsibility for all that work fell into the hands of James Priest, the new head gardener at Giverny, and he’s a Brit — or, rather, he was. Priest came to France in 1986 and has pretty much gone native: he speaks English with a French accent. He’s deeply respectful of the work of the previous incumbent, Gilbert Vahé, who held the post for 35 years, and says he’ll watch and learn for the first 12 months. Only then will he make his mark.

Whatever happens, Giverny is bound to remain a sumptuous visual experience — and the perfect start to a weekend in eastern Normandy.

Visiting Guidelines

Monet’s house and gardens (00 33-2 32 51 28 21, fondation-monet.fr; £7) are open daily, 9.30am-6pm, from April 1 to November 1. They get 500,000 visitors each year. Coach parties and school groups are the bane of weekdays — avoid them by going between noon and 2pm, or after 4pm. These are good times to aim for at the weekend, too, along with 9am-10am.

Every month is different – September is for sunflowers, dahlias and asters; hold on till early May for deep beds of tulips. Whenever you go, it will be pulsating with colour. Ignore the house, by the way — it wasn’t built for the volumes of people trooping through it, and there are no Monet paintings inside.

Weekend Wandering

Plan to see the garden twice, once in the afternoon and once at 9am next day. This will allow you to enjoy it as Monet would have, appreciating the changes in light and atmosphere. When you’re done, check out the Musée des Impressionnismes next door, currently showing works by Monet, Manet and Degas (02 32 51 94 65, mdig.fr; £5.70).

A few miles north of Giverny lies Les Andelys. Home to a beautifully preserved medieval church and square, it’s overlooked by the Château Gaillard (open daily except Tuesday, April 2-November 6, 10am-1pm and 2pm-6pm; £2.80). Built at vast expense by Richard the Lionheart, it sits on the edge of a sweeping escarpment above the Seine.

Beyond the pretty village of Lyons-la-Forêt, you’ll find Le Jardin Plume (02 35 23 00 01, lejardinplume.com; open May 11-October 30, 2pm-6pm on Thursday, Friday and Sunday, 10am-noon on Wednesday and Saturday; £6). Horticulturists have been drooling over its mix of modern planting and old-school layout for years. It’s Priest’s favourite garden in the area, so may offer clues as to how Giverny might evolve.

How To Get There

Paris is only about 50 miles from Giverny, so it’s really easy to get to – just scan through the web for cheap flights to Paris, then pick up a train or coach to Giverny and visual heaven follows!

Enjoy The Best of Edinburgh

If you’re visiting Scotland then there’s a good chance that Edinburgh is on your list of places to visit. There’s plenty to do in Edinburgh and some of the best things to see are free! So whether you are staying in a hotel, Guest House or one of the grand old Edinburgh apartments you’re never going to be short of experiences.

Firstly, you can climb Arthur’s Seat. At over 823ft high the large landscape of hills and rocky crags sits in Holyrood Park and is great for when you need a refreshing long walk. When you reach the top, you’ll be rewarded with absolutely stunning views of historic Edinburgh. So if you want to see the city in one panoramic view – put your walking shoes on get to Arthur’s Seat.

Royal Botanic Gardens

If you enjoy plant life, consider a trip exploring the Royal Botanic Gardens. It covers a mind-blowing 70 acres including a memorial garden to The Queen Mother, examples of Chinese rock gardens and fantastic victorian greenhouses, devised to display the latest horticultural finds.

There’s also the Writer’s Museum, which sits just off the Royal Mile. The Mile is one of Edinburgh’s oldest streets and worth visiting in its own right. The Writer’s Museum details the live of famous writers such as Robert Burns, Robert Louis Stevenson and Sir Walter Scott. It’s free to get in (although donations are appreciated) and proves to be an interesting day out for the whole family.

Try and time a visit to Edinburgh that will coincide with one of their famous Art festivals. The Edinburgh Peforming Arts Festival usually starts at the beginning of August and features hundreds of acts – running throughout the city, on a 24 hour basis. Many of the acts are completely free to see. Edinburgh also has a thriving art scene, and many fine galleries and exhibition rooms, so check with the tourist board for the latest displays in the city. There’s the Vogrie Autumn Festival held in October, celebrating the seasonal changes, and the Linlithgow Festival, held over the whole month of October – this is an arts festival celebrating opera, theatre and good wine! There are over 400 seperate things to do, see and experience over the next 8 weeks in Edinburgh, so make sure you have a look at whats on in Scotland before you set off on your trip. If you can expand your trip, city base apartments would be a perfect base for diving into life in Edinburgh and further afield.

Museum of Childhood

Finally, an attraction that is free to get in and ideal for adults and children alike is The Museum Of Childhood. This museum is a wonderful blast-from-the-past for adults as it gives you a glimpse into the past where you’ll see classic games and plenty of toys that you might have used in your own childhood. Children will love it too; they can see how much things have changed and what sort of toys their parents used to play with – just one generation before the Playstation!

If you have wondered where these magical trinkets were first made, they are attributed to skilled craftsmen in the little town of Lauscha, in central Germany. They are still made there today – a wonderful winter break would be to take a trip to Lauscha and watch how the glass blowers create these timeless decorations. There is an increasing interest in these fragile, beautiful objects and in order to bring them home safely, you’ll benefit from good travel insurance. You might even want to take an extra suitcase and bring back a few boxes for heirloom gifts! Christmas decorations are often handed on to the younger members of the family and vintage glass baubles are increasingly sought after.

The Home of the Original Glass Bauble

The town of Lauscha, Thuringia Region, is in central Germany. Lauscha became known for expert glass blowing in the 12th Century – producing fine goblets and bowls. Thuringia was able to supply the two key essential elements for glass – there was plenty of good timber and access to sand. Techniques and styles for tree decorations began to develop around the late 1840’s; two craftsmen, Christopher Muller and Hans Grierer began blowing glass decorations in apple, orange and walnut shapes. To make the inside of the bauble reflect light, they were originally painted with a frightful mixture of lead and mercury! It was later discovered that sugar water and silver nitrate produced an equally effective reflective surface which was unlikely to poison anyone – not the case for it’s predecessor!

The Tradition Begins

Prince Albert, husband of Queen Victoria, is believed to have initiated the traditions of Christmas that English people still follow today. Prince Albert brought a fir tree into the royal home and encouraged his family to decorate it with glass baubles, ribbons and candles. This was reported in the London News, and the trend was set – everyone who could afford it, bought a tree, and decorated it too. Lauscha was put on the map, as being the best town to buy decorations; business links were developed and vast numbers of decorations were exported to America and Europe. FW Woolworth for instance, made a considerable part of his fortune on sales of Christmas decorations.

After World War II, many of the family owned operations in Lauscha were taken over by the State, but some companies reformed when the Berlin Wall was removed. There are approximately 20 glass companies back in business in Lauscha so there is plenty of choice. A gift set of hand made glass baubles will be long treasured, so pack them carefully and they’ll be enjoyed for many years to come.

How To Plan an Unforgettable Travel To The Adriatic Region

The Adriatic is the perfect place for a summer vacation. Loads of sun, crystal-clear sea, wonderful beaches, great food, picturesque islands… Absolutely everything you could hope to get from a visit to the Mediterranean can be found here. Therefore, a trip to the Adriatic region is also a huge opportunity to experience something very special and afford yourself something you will remember for the rest of your life. Planning an unforgettable trip like that takes a little bit of planning, so here are the some tips to make your life just a tad easier.

Find the right accommodation

If the Adriatic is where you will be spending your vacation, this is your chance to experience a bit of luxury at a great price. To be more exact, you can get some incredible villas with a pool to serve as your accommodation, which is perfect if you’re with your family and are looking to some time for yourselves or are visiting with a group of friends and just want to relax and have some fun. Either way, you can find exactly what you’re looking for over at Villsy.com, and believe you me when I say that there are some amazing villas to be discovered there.

Visit the sights

The eastern coast of the Adriatic is incredibly rich in history and culture, and there are some spectacular sights wherever you look, particularly from the age of ancient Rome. From the breath-taking amphitheatre in Pula to the jaw-dropping palace belonging to a Roman emperor, no less, which is at the heart of Split, you will have access to monuments that shock an amaze anyone who sees them. But there are also great sights from later periods, so a trip here can really be a trip through time.

Go island hopping

The Adriatic, especially Croatia, has a lot of islands, big and small, worth exploring. Quaint little towns and villages, friendly locals, amazing feats of nature – it’s the whole package. Therefore, you really should think about renting a boat and visiting a few of them, and places like Hvar are particularly popular. From Hvar, you can get to Pakleni Islands in a matter of minutes, Brač is right “across the street”, and even Vis with its incredible Blue Cave is not too far away. And that’s just one small part of Croatia’s islands.

Taste some wine and olive oil

If you’re a wine lover, the Adriatic region is a gem waiting to be discovered. Yes, people here love wines, but they are perhaps not as famous as some of their French or Italian counterparts. There can be no doubt, though, that Adriatic winemakers know their stuff, as the production of wine in this part of the world has been around for hundreds, if not thousands of years. Exactly the same thing can be said about olive oils. So, do try and order something local when sitting down for lunch. You will be pleasantly surprised.

Don’t stay in one place

The region is fairly well connected, so you may want to think about organizing day trips or maybe even moving to another place altogether after a few days. That way, you will experience much more and see the charming differences between different parts of the Adriatic coast. If you’re in Dubrovnik, for example, you can hop over to Montenegro. If you’re in Istria, maybe a trip down to Dalmatia wouldn’t be a bad idea, or you can stop on Velebit to enjoy Croatia’s biggest mountain. Whatever you choose, you can’t go wrong.

5 Things To Do If Your Holiday Operator Goes Bust

Many of us save year-round to have a week or two relaxing in the sun. Thankfully, the chances of your holiday operator collapsing whilst you are away, or before you travel, are very slim, but when this does happen, the cleanup afterwards can take an emotional and financial toll on you and your family.

With the recent collapse of Thomas Cook leaving up to 21,000 tourists stranded at their holiday destinations, having a vague idea of what to do should this happen to you is important. Not only will this lessen the stress, but you’re much less likely to make rash decisions, which may be costly, and let you enjoy the time you have left of your holiday.

First Steps To Take

As soon as you hear that your holiday company has collapsed, you need to speak directly to your travel company to see if your booking is still in place. If you are unable to contact them, then you should go directly to your accommodation and airline provider to see if they have your booking. If it is, then you can proceed with your holiday as normal. If not, then you will need to look through your paperwork and see if you are ATOL or ABTA protected.

Check What Happens To Your Holiday

If your holiday operator goes into collapse before you go away, then, unfortunately, it is likely that your holiday will be cancelled with immediate effect. It currently isn’t possible for you to transfer your existing booking to another company.

Your money will be protected by the ATOL or ABTA scheme, which protects the money of customers who buy complete package holidays. When you booked, you should have received an ATOL certificate, which will tell you what you should do if your travel company stops operations. Applying for a refund may take a few weeks, but there isn’t anything stopping you booking another holiday in the meantime.

If you booked your holiday components separately and the sales were covered by ATOL, then you can apply for a refund, but there may also be the possibility that you can continue with your travel arrangements as planned. Currently, the only thing not covered by the ATOL scheme is hotel-only bookings, but some travel insurance companies may cover some of your losses.

Claiming On Your Travel Insurance

Policies will differ based on a number of different clauses, so it is always best to check with your travel insurance provider if you are unsure. If you book trips on your own, then be sure that you take out a policy which has an end supplier failure which will protect you should any part of your trip collapse. These situations are the reason as to why you should always buy travel insurance as soon as you make your holiday booking. Depending on the policy you choose, you can choose cover which protects you should a company go bust.

Don’t Panic

If you are on holiday when the collapse happens, then your first instinct is to panic and think you’re not going to get home. But, there is really no need to worry. If your holiday is protected under the ATOL scheme, then you are probably able to carry on with the rest of your holiday as normal and fly home as planned. There is a small chance that you may need to switch hotels or return on a different flight, but local reps will help you and answer any questions and many tour operators have a free international number you can contact.

Verify Your Credit Card Protection

If you don’t have any travel insurance in place at the time the company goes bust, then you may still be able to claim back the money you spent through your credit card company. In order to be eligible, then you need to have paid more than £100 in total for your flights or holiday and booked directly with the company which has ceased trading. If you paid using a debit card, then you may still be able to claim some money back through the Credit Card Chargeback Scheme which the majority of high street banks are signed up to. This enables you to ask your card provider to reverse the transaction, giving you some or all of your money back.

Check Your Other Bookings

If this is a special trip, such as a wedding or honeymoon, and your plans are affected by the collapse, then you must contact the other vendors and companies as soon as possible and see if they can help in any way. If you have booked a luxury villa, caterers or a special venue, they may be able to help and rearrange the dates for you. Some companies are known for offering refunds, changes or honouring your bookings, so it is always worth having the conversation.

There are ways that you can make a flight delay bearable. Here are 6 things to do if you come across a flight delay situation.

You’ve booked your flights and hotel weeks ago, the out of office email is on and you’re on your way to the airport. However, when you get there you discover that your flight is delayed and you’re going to be spending another 5 hours at the airport before you even get the chance for the sun to kiss your skin.

Flight delays can be a pain and extremely stressful. You almost feel lost and stranded as you’re awaiting the instructions of what you need to do next. Luckily, there are ways that you can make a flight delay bearable. Here are 6 things to do if you come across a flight delay situation.

Download the airline app

Not all airline apps are the same and sometimes there can be chaos in the airport when flight delays happen with airlines. To save yourself the time of discussing the matter with the staff or lining up in long call queues, download the airline’s app. It’s more likely quicker to get up to date information and message alerts through it rather than by more traditional methods that might cause you more stress.

Keep your phone battery high

When you look up most blogs to do with important stuff to pack before a holiday or travelling, they’ll always mention packing a portable charger for when you’re out and about. In this case, though, you might just need a traditional one considering you’re still in the airport. Just find yourself a plug socket and make sure your phone’s fully charged. If you don’t have that luxury, then consider battery saving mode or closing those apps that drain your battery.

Print your boarding pass

Considering the stress that you’ve already gone through the last thing you need are little annoyances to send you over the edge. Although digital boarding passes can be a great convenience, they can also be a great inconvenience when they don’t work or open. To save the embarrassment of holding up the queue even further, print your boarding pass so you can sail past the boarding process.

Check your important documents

Since you’ve got a bit of spare time, there couldn’t be a better time to check that you have everything with you including your important documents and items. Do you have your passport? Is your sunscreen packed? Did you need to take your Visa with you? Ensure you have all these just in case, even if it is extremely last minute! You might still have time to get it fetched for depending on the delay of your flight.

Purchase snacks

Being tired and hungry truly is a recipe for disaster. It might not be a full meal but any form of snacks that you can keep on you will help to pass the time a bit better. It’ll save you sitting there with a rumbling stomach whilst you wait for the next update on your delayed flight.

Call your card company

Depending on the travel or card company you booked the flight with, you could be covered for compensation for delayed flights. It’s not compulsory, however, for companies to compensate for a flight that’s been delayed unless it’s an extreme circumstance. Nevertheless, it would have caused you inconvenience which means you have every right to call the airline up and make your claim for some sort of compensation.

Lisbon, Portugal probably isn’t the first place you think of for a European vacation. This capital city is full of history, fun, and lots of colourful Instagram spots. If you want to enjoy the Mediterranean experience, there are plenty of exciting places to see in Lisbon.

Navigating Lisbon

Lisbon has many historic districts inviting you to explore their winding streets by foot or the iconic yellow trams that are part of the Carris public transit system.

One will quickly notice that much of Lisbon is hilly but not unbearable. The areas touching the Tagus River, like the Belém district, are flat. Don’t be afraid to use the tram system to get around town. It’s safe, affordable, and gives your feet a rest.

Visit These Landmarks First

The Jerónimos Monastery is one of the most-visited city landmarks. It’s located in the Belem district and is the resting place for maritime explorer Vasco de Gama. If you only visit one historic church building this might be your best choice because of the grand beauty and architecture.

Connected to the monastery is the National Archaeology Museum. This museum includes Egyptian and Islamic artifacts in addition to Portuguese collections from the Middle Ages. It’s interesting if you have the time or like ancient history. Admission costs €10 just visit the monastery although a combo ticket to both locations costs €12 saving you €5.

Belém Tower

The Belém Tower is a historic city defence tower located at the mouth of the Tagus River built in the early 1500s. It has also served as a lighthouse and customs house before becoming a tourist attraction. You can easily visit the tower when seeing the Jerónimos Monastery or walking along the river in this section of Lisbon.

This tower is also a symbol of Portugal’s glory days as they explored the world and opened distant trade routes. Today, you can see the dank ground-level prison and tour the tower’s five levels. Like many of the city’s other buildings and monuments, this tower is built from the white-coloured stone.

São Jorge Castle

At the top of Lisbon’s highest peak is São Jorge Castle which offers stunning views of the city. The original fortress dates back to the fifth century and has improved over the centuries. You can explore the various towers and imagine you are back in the Middle Ages guarding the town.

Take the time to explore the streets near the castle. The castle is in the Alfama District which is the Lisbon’s oldest district. Enjoy the panoramic overlooks, quaint streets, and old buildings.

Lisbon Cathedral

A 12-minute walk from the São Jorge Castle is the Sé de Lisboa cathedral. There are lots of beautiful churches in Lisbon, but this is the city’s main Roman Catholic church. It’s also one of the oldest church buildings dating back to the twelfth century. Touring the cloister lets you see old Roman and Moorish ruins. A visit to the treasury lets you see relics and other valuable items.

Tram 28

A visit to Lisbon isn’t complete until you ride one of the iconic yellow Carris tram cars. These cars are the quickest way to travel across the city without breaking your wallet. A 24-hour ticket costs €6,40 per person.

Tram 28 is the most popular route because it’s one of the most scenic and easiest ways to see historic Lisbon. It takes you to the São Jorge Castle, Alfama District, and the Sé cathedral to name a few notable landmarks.

Long lines are common to board the tram during mid-day and especially during peak season. Your best chances of getting a seat are to ride during the early morning or late evening hours. You should also consider boarding at the Martim Moniz and Campo Ourique stations which are the starting and ending points of Tram 28.

Rua Augusta

One of Lisbon’s main pedestrian streets is Rua Augusta. It’s in the Baixa district which is located in the center of the town. There are plenty of shops and restaurants you may stop at. The area’s most notable landmark is the Rua Augusta Arch built to remember the decimating 1755 earthquake. When you’re not looking up, examine the various ground mosaics.

Other tourists like to visit the adjacent town squares. Another attraction is the Elevador de Santa Justa (Santa Justa Lift) which offers more panoramic views and also connects you to Bairro Alto which is another cultural hub.

Day Trip to Sintra

If you spend at least three days in Lisbon, make time for a day trip to idyllic Sintra. This town used to serve as a getaway for royalty and other prominent families. Some travellers will spend the night to explore more of the area because there is much to see. Sintra is 40 minutes outside Lisbon on the Atlantic coast and is accessible by car or train.

The colourful Pena Palace is the most visible landmark in Sintra. It’s even visible from parts of Lisbon. If arriving by train, pay the €6,90 return trip cost to ride the tourist bus and avoid a long, steep uphill climb to the palace entrance. You can tour the exterior grounds and terraces which are very scenic. For an extra fee, you can also see the interior staterooms Portuguese royalty once frequented.

Another Sintra marvel is the Quinta de Regeleira Gardens which has many different stopping points. For instance, you can see a hidden cave and also look up from the base of a large well-like pit. You won’t want to rush visiting the gardens. A trip to the Quinta takes approximately two hours. Afterward, you can see another mansion or a historic church.

Summary

Take your time visiting Lisbon and the surrounding area. With many centuries-old buildings and a rich maritime culture, this European capital is one destination you can’t ignore. In fact, it might be one of the most enjoyable trips you take to the Iberian peninsula.
