Fruity 7 Band EQ is, as the names suggests, a seven-band (one low shelf, one high shelf and five peaking) equalizer plugin, optimized for low CPU use. This effect is a close cousin of Fruity Parametric EQ, which gives more control.

EQ is short for equalization, which is the industry term for ‘tone control’. Most Hi-Fi systems have at least ‘bass’ and ‘treble’ controls, the Fruity 7 Band EQ has seven tone controls with slightly overlapping areas. If the knobs were sliders we would call this a seven-band ‘graphic equalizer’. It’s all the same thing.

Parameters

The parameters represent the levels of 7 predefined frequency bands. Turn the wheel to right to boost a band, or to left to decrease its level.

Tips

* You can map the band knobs to the first row of your MIDI controller (if you have one) for easier usage.
* Disabled bands (level set to zero) do not place any load the CPU.

Optimizing CPU and memory usage

This section contains tips that will help you reduce CPU and memory usage in your projects.

* Reduce the plugin count: Try to reduce the number of plugin generators (instrument and FX). These are the most CPU hungry parts of the program.
* Smart Disable: Whenever possible enable Tools > Macros > Smart disable. This turns off effects when they are not receiving a signal and so decreases CPU usage significantly.
* Freeze mixer tracks: Render some Channels to audio and then mute the instruments in the Channel Window or delete them. Remember that FL Studio records mixer tracks so you will select several mixer tracks to record, then mute or remove the Channels feeding those mixer tracks.
* Increase the buffer latency: Keep doubling the latency until you notice a drop in CPU usage. This will of course make live playing difficult but will allow you to mix CPU intensive tracks easily.
* Channel FX: Channel based delay echoes work by re-triggering the instrument, not in audio. See Function Channel Settings. This increases polyphony and thus CPU usage. In nearly all cases the Fruity Delay effect does the same job with less CPU hit. Similarly Echo Delay will not trigger echoes (thus freeing CPU resources), if feedback is set to minimum (see |Channel Settings|Function Channel Settings]]).
* Limit Polyphony: Use the maximum polyphony setting to reduce the maximum polyphony of channels (see Miscellaneous Channel Settings). This often reduces dramatically CPU usage in complex melodies. You can still set FL Studio to ignore the maximum polyphony settings when exporting to wave/mp3 file (see Exporting to WAV/MP3/MIDI).
* Samples: Trim (with any wave editor) the remaining silence in your samples not to have it mixed (you don't hear it but it takes CPU resources). Any remaining ZERO silence is automatically removed within FL Studio, but nothing more.
* Disable MIDI output: See Enable MIDI Output in Options Menu. If you are not using it, disable it as it uses CPU resources.

VST Plugins

VST Plugins usually come in the form of a ‘dynamic link library’ (.DLL) file, containing a program that can be invoked by FL Studio to perform the desired function. Installing plugins, instruments and FX, is usually a very simple process including -

* Copying a few .DLL files to a directory (or pointing an installation package to install to that directory)
* Refreshing the plugin list in FL Studio so that they are available for use.

You will probably collect quite a few 3rd party plugins so we advise keeping them outside the FL Studio installation directory so that you can back-up and manage your plugins independent of the FL Studio installation -

1. Create a plugin directory where you will save ALL your 3rd party plugins, somewhere outside the FL Studio install structure, e.g. C:\MyFLStudio\Plugins.
2. Set C:\MyFLStudio\Plugins as the VST search directory. Press F10, select File Settings - Then select the File tab at the bottom of the file window you will see ‘VST plugins extra search directory’. Click on the folder icon and browse to C:\MyFLStudio\Plugins directory and click OK). FL studio will now look in this directory for plugins to use.
3. Create sub-directories for FX and Instruments (be organized, as later you will have no idea what is an instrument or FX plugin among your .DLLs).

Install VST Instruments/Synths/Generators (VSTi)

1. Install the Instrument plugins (.DLLs etc) to the appropriate directory created in the previous section (above). This will usually be a copy procedure. If installation uses an installer, override the default install directory and point it to your VST directory.
2. Refresh the plugin list. Click: Channels > Add one > More > Refresh (button at the bottom of the list) > Fast scan. The plugin you have installed should appear in the plugin list in red. If this does not happen, please make sure you have followed the previous steps properly.
3. Optional - Place a checkmark before the plugin name if you want it listed in your favorites and close the window.
4. Now the plugin is installed and can be used as a standard FL Studio instrument. To add an instance of the plugin to the current project, open the Channels menu, select Add One and in the submenu that appears select the name of the plugin. An instance of the plugin will appear in the Step Sequencer window.
