At the centre is Brendan Fraser’s Philip Vanderploeg, an American actor adrift in Tokyo whose career highlight is a seven-year-old toothpaste commercial. When he’s offered a job with Rental Family, a company run by Shinji (Takehiro Hira), Philip initially balks at the idea of performing emotional labour for strangers. But as Shinji explains the stigma surrounding mental health in Japan and the quiet epidemic of isolation, Philip begins to see the work as something more than a gimmick. It’s a niche role, yes, and one that conveniently requires a token foreigner, but it’s also a chance to fill a void for people who can’t ask for help any other way.

The film’s premise could easily veer into heavy territory, yet Hikari keeps the tone light, even tender. The moral ambiguity of the rental family industry lingers in the background, but the narrative focuses on the emotional micro-moments that shape Philip’s assignments.

Its bilingual dialogue occasionally suffers from muffled English delivery, but the emotional clarity remains intact.

Ultimately, the film asks a deceptively simple question: if white lies can be compassionate, where is the line between comfort and deception? And what does it cost, emotionally and financially, to outsource intimacy?

The Western world might find it hard to understand the reason behind the actual rental family agencies, but for people who need their services, they are the last lifeline.

October 12–24: Around 300 brand-new washi artworks take centre stage, created by everyone from established artists to students and families. Each piece is displayed in a clear acrylic case protecting the delicate paper while allowing the lanterns to shimmer even in the rain.

October 25–November 30: The exhibition shifts into a nostalgic mode, showcasing approximately 140 award‑winning works from previous years. Set against November’s peak foliage, the effect is breathtaking: a tapestry of glowing art framed by crimson and gold.

We felt incredibly fortunate to experience this breathtaking event during our late‑October trip to Japan. Watching the town come alive with glowing washi creations was unforgettable.

The Continuous Rise of Frugal Chic, and I’m Loving It!

Frugality and ‘underconsumption’ are not just the latest Gen Z trends on TikTok, but they’ve been going on since our old folks before us. The conversation surrounding it keeps on rising, even bigger, and sometimes you can’t escape it.

It happens everywhere, and even here in our humble community in Australia, the conversation about saving every dollar is a must. And I’m loving it!

But here on this blog, I can only share my personal experiences about how I became a frugal chic, and not totally trash someone who loves splurging crazy, coz it is their lifestyle, not mine.

Living here in Australia has given me a greater understanding of the value of every dollar spent and how to become resourceful in reusing things that are already available on hand.

Friends of mine often mistake me as a shopaholic (of sorts), but I don’t go to Chadstone and burn my hard-earned dollars for a new dress (that I can make myself). Rather, I visit several opshops around town, even driving to the next town and another for my frugal shopping hunt, and that makes me feel even prouder of myself, because I know that I will cherish them most.

I love visiting op shops in towns that are known for a community of wealthy residents coz they oftentimes do drop-offs of donations to the nearest op shops, hence, chances of getting good quality stuff are higher.

That’s where I sourced my sewing materials, secondhand textiles, good quality clothing that I can wear in repeats, home decor, and even furniture (when I’m so lucky).

Remember that era of Labubu craze? Almost everyone wants to have their own limited-edition Labubu, and then collect its other buddies like you are collecting virtual Pokemons… fast forward, this craze suddenly died coz it isn’t on trend anymore, and many moved on to the next trend.

And here I am, still loving that DIY bag charm I made using the rescued old plush toys from several op shops. A few I got for a dollar, some of them I got for FREE!

Recently, we did some decluttering of our daughters’ rooms as they finished their Year 12 and are going to university. I saved several candle containers (they were of good quality) and reused them all for my sewing studio. I also saved most of our Moccona coffee jars because they are very useful to store my beads and other craft supplies.

I’m not shy to claim I’m an op shopper. In fact, I’m a very proud op shopper!

That makes me a frugal chic.

I love a good bargain. It is sexy and kinda giving a good aphrodisiac to me.

It is truly a good feeling to see that many people online are now proudly sharing their stories and several tips on frugality. As travellers without a fixed itinerary, we’ve always enjoyed the freedom to stop wherever the road invites us. One of those spontaneous detours led us to Margate, a small town perched on North West Bay and a familiar pit‑stop for anyone heading south toward Snug, Kettering, or the Bruny Island ferry.

Just a few kilometres south of Hobart’s CBD, Margate is a relaxed, close‑knit community stretched along the upper reaches of the D’Entrecasteaux Channel. Though technically a suburb of Tasmania’s largest city, it feels worlds away, quiet, scenic, and supported by a surprising amount of local infrastructure.

It’s one of several charming southern suburbs lining the water, each offering its own slice of Tasmanian coastal life.

I remember my husband mentioning a trip to Bruny Island, and despite not being early risers, we decided to make the most of the morning. We left our hotel before the sun was fully up, embracing the stillness of the drive.

Along the way, we found ourselves pulling into one of Margate’s most beloved attractions: the iconic Margate Train. What began as a quick stop turned into a delightful pause, complete with a hearty breakfast served inside one of its nostalgic carriages.

The Margate Train

The Margate Train (once the iconic Tasman Limited) stands today as Tasmania’s last surviving passenger train, lovingly restored and reimagined as a vibrant local attraction. Built in England in 1950, the train faithfully carried travellers between Hobart and Launceston until its final run in 1978.

Now permanently stationed in Margate, its vintage carriages have been transformed into a charming retail precinct open daily.

Each carriage offers something different: arts and crafts, quirky bric‑a‑brac, a specialist book exchange, and even a cosy pancake restaurant. The original buffet car has found new life as a welcoming café, inviting visitors to pause for coffee or a light meal, and perhaps do antique shopping nearby, as well as a children's play area, toilets, baby change facility and plenty of car parking.

The Pancake Train Restaurant

We settled in at the Pancake Train Restaurant for a hearty breakfast (though the name is a bit of a misdirection, because the menu goes far beyond pancakes). What immediately caught my attention wasn’t just the food but the café’s playful Halloween makeover.

They’d transformed the old carriage using discarded odds and ends, eerie trinkets, and a collection of vintage photographs that looked like they belonged to Margate’s earliest settlers. The effect was charmingly spooky, as if the past was peeking through the décor.

Our meals arrived in generous portions, the kind that make sharing feel natural and lingering over breakfast almost mandatory. It was exactly what we needed after an early start… comforting, filling, and served with that relaxed Tasmanian friendliness that makes you feel like you’ve stumbled upon a local secret.

Between bites, I found myself glancing around the carriage, fascinated by how the space blends nostalgia with a touch of whimsy. Even the practical details are thoughtfully considered; the café has its own dedicated toilet, which is always a welcome convenience when you’re on the road.

After our delicious, hearty breakfast, we decided to pay a visit to the nearby antique shop.

It is an enormous antiques warehouse housed in a former IXL apple packing shed that tempts treasure hunters with its eclectic mix of retro furniture, curios, and second‑hand finds.

This antique shop feels like stepping into someone’s memory… layered, colourful, and wonderfully unpredictable. This one belongs firmly to the latter. The moment you walk in, you’re greeted not by silence but by a gentle hum of history, the kind that invites you to slow down and look a little closer.

At the heart of the room stands a tall glass cabinet, glowing softly like a jewel box. Inside, porcelain teapots, delicate vases, and hand‑painted figurines sit together in quiet conversation. Each piece feels like it has travelled far across homes, decades, and perhaps continents before finding its place on these shelves.

Above them, a serene Buddha statue watches over the room, framed by a misty forest backdrop that adds a touch of calm to the visual abundance.

The walls are a joyful riot of colour… sunny yellow, deep red, ocean blue, each one carrying its own collection of masks, paintings, and quirky signs. A chandelier hangs overhead, slightly mismatched with the rest of the décor, yet somehow perfect in this eclectic universe.

What makes spaces like this so irresistible is the feeling they evoke. You’re not just browsing objects; you’re brushing up against stories. A chipped teacup might remind you of your grandmother’s kitchen. A carved wooden mask might spark memories of a long‑ago trip.

There’s comfort in the clutter, beauty in the chaos, and a sense of discovery around every corner. You never know what you’ll find: an unexpected treasure, a forgotten craft, or simply a moment of nostalgia that warms you from the inside out.

Antique shops like this aren’t just places to shop. They’re places to feel. To remember. To imagine. And to reconnect with the quiet magic of objects that have lived many lives before they meet yours.

The moment I stepped into the room filled with wooden planks and offcuts, a familiar scent rose to meet me. It stopped me in my tracks. Suddenly, I was back in my late father’s workshop, surrounded by the warm, comforting aroma of freshly carved Huon pine, also known as Macquarie pine (Lagarostrobos franklinii).

The memory washed over me gently, like an unexpected embrace, and I felt a wave of emotion I didn’t realise I’d been holding. That distinctive, resinous fragrance reminded me just how deeply I miss him.

Of course, I couldn’t leave without taking a small piece of Huon pine home… a simple $12 keepsake, but one that carries a world of meaning.

I reckon this is one of the finest antique shops I’ve visited in Australia. The prices are surprisingly reasonable, with plenty of pieces that feel like a genuine find. I only wish I could pack more treasures into my luggage to take home with me.

On Sundays, the area comes alive with the Margate Train Sunday Market. Stalls brim with antiques and collectables, handmade crafts, pre‑loved clothing, plants, and fresh local produce, creating a lively community atmosphere that makes the train precinct a must‑visit stop for anyone exploring southern Tasmania.

Brookfield Margate

Location: 1640 Channel Hwy, Margate TAS 7054

The historic Brookfield Shed was built in the early 1940s for a German man named Eugene Klinger and originally served as a facility for collecting flower and vegetable seeds for Yates Seeds. Remarkably, the original slatted drying floor remains intact. Over the years, the shed has taken on many roles, including housing Chandlers Seeds, supporting hops production, and later operating as a Co‑Op apple shed for Henry Jones & Co.

Today, the site has evolved into a vibrant destination featuring a vineyard, function centre, and a welcoming café‑restaurant—well worth a visit. The mezzanine level adds an unexpected charm, home to the Tudor Court Model Village and the German Model Train World.

The café and restaurant offer a healthy, diverse menu suited to both al fresco and indoor dining. The bright Canary Room provides a lively contrast to the mellow theatre space, which often resonates with live music showcasing both local and international artists.

Channel Heritage Museum

Location: 1755 Channel Highway (entry off Parish Lane), Margate, Tasmania.

The Museum offers a rich collection of permanent exhibits that trace the region’s story from early exploration and Aboriginal heritage to timber and boat building, fruit growing, fishing, sport, churches, transport, the 1967 bushfires, and militaria. It's recreated schoolroom, general store, and colonial‑style rooms, including a kitchen, bedroom, laundry and workroom, bring the everyday life of the past vividly to life.

A dedicated display highlights the Electrona Carbide Works, a site unique in Australia. Nearby, a growing collection of vintage farming machinery is housed in a separate exhibition space, forming an ongoing restoration project that continues to evolve.

Enjoy the stroll at Dru Point Bicentennial Park Track

This gentle 30‑minute return walk (1.8 km) traces the picturesque banks of the North West Bay River, offering serene views across the estuary and all the way to the summit of kunanyi / Mt Wellington. It’s the kind of stroll that invites you to slow down, breathe deeply, and simply enjoy the rhythm of the landscape.

Bird lovers will find plenty to admire here. A diverse range of waterbirds feed along the estuary, and if luck is on your side, you might even spot a swift parrot darting among the black gums, sipping nectar from their blossoms—a rare and memorable sight.

Near the beginning of the trail, an Aboriginal Garden has been thoughtfully established to honour the First Nations people who once camped along these riverbanks. Planted with species of cultural significance, it offers a quiet moment of reflection and a gentle reminder of the deep history woven into this place.

Inverware Native Gardens

Inverawe Native Gardens is a remarkable Tasmanian landscape shaped with a gentle nod to traditional garden design. When work began in 2001, the site was little more than 22 acres of weeds. The transformation started at the centre, which remains the most developed area today, while restoration continues across the more remote corners of the property.

Created as a living showcase of Tasmania’s natural flora, the gardens blend semi‑formal plantings with meandering walking paths that guide visitors through two distinct environments: a remnant woodland and a former tidal swamp now softened into rich, grassy flats. At the northern edge of these grasslands rises Rabbit Hill, offering sweeping views across the gardens and down North West Bay toward Bruny Island.

This meeting place of forest, pasture, wetlands, and tidal flats forms a fringe habitat teeming with life. It’s an especially rewarding spot for birdwatchers, who can linger among the shifting light and birdsong as the landscape reveals its quiet, layered beauty.

Last January 2026, I visited the latest fashion exhibition currently showing at the National Gallery of Australia, located in Canberra. As a lover of creative fashion (and heaps of colours!) I’ve gained curiosity and passion in supporting local fashion designers and learned from their creations. And that included the legendary Aussie designers Jenny Kee (Sydney) and Linda Jackson (Melbourne).

It was sometime in 2021 when I first learned about this creative duo, after watching the ABC iView documentary titled Step into Paradise, telling their stories about their beginnings in the industry, how vintage fashion styling emerged from mix-and-matching Indian with Guatemalian and African textiles together, how patchwork fashion started in London, etc while showing their younger self in their stylish clothing that every fashion girlies nowadays could die for to have.

Truly, they are the pioneering influencers back in the 70’s Australia.

Bold prints, with flamingoes, tropical prints, beaches, and koalas, gave rise to the Australiana fashion.

After watching the documentary, I started to daydream of seeing their original creations and get inspirations from them that I could use for my own upcycling design projects. By then, I promised myself that one day, I would visit their (future) exhibition, and I would book a flight if I had to.

These ladies are the godmothers of Australiana fashion. And I reckon, I shouldn’t miss any opportunity I could get.

So when I learned about their fashion exhibition in the National Gallery of Australia, I was so thrilled that my husband and I decided to celebrate the beginning of 2026 in Canberra and visit their creations.

No whites, no boring neutral colours, and definitely no basic tees, 80 works by the pair, including bold hand-knitted garments, silks and scarves, have taken centre stage at the National Gallery of Australia (NGA).

Jenny Kee and Linda Jackson’s creative chemistry first sparked in the 1970s, when Jackson’s vibrant designs found a home inside Kee’s beloved Flamingo Park Frock Salon in Sydney’s Strand Arcade.

What began as a retail moment quickly blossomed into one of Australia’s most iconic fashion partnerships.

A little over a decade later, the pair amicably stepped into their own creative lanes, each carving out a distinct legacy. Jackson opened her Bush Couture Studio in Kings Cross, a treasure box of hand‑printed textiles featuring opal motifs inspired by her travels across South‑East Asia and Europe. Her work carried that unmistakable sense of wanderlust and artistic curiosity.

Kee, meanwhile, continued to steer Flamingo Park until 1995, cementing her name as shorthand for exuberant Australiana — think bold knits, vivid colours, and garments that celebrated the natural world with unapologetic joy.

Together or apart, their influence continues to ripple through Australian fashion, reminding us how powerful creativity becomes when it’s rooted in place, personality, and a touch of paradise.

The National Gallery of Australia has acquired the personal fashion collections of designers Linda Jackson and Jenny Kee.

There’s something irresistibly charming about polka dots, a print that flirts with nostalgia yet always finds its way back into the fashion conversation. I learned a new word today.

いかす (Ikasu)

“ikasu” means “revive” or “give second life” in Japanese.

I reckon it is a beautiful word, full of life and possibilities. Then I realized that I’ve somehow been using the philosophy of ikasu for all these years.

Turning unwanted clothing and old textiles into something beautiful, wearable, and full of life is one of my greatest passions. Giving a second (or third) life to discarded materials gives me a fulfillment of joy and, somehow, purpose in life.

Just like when I kept all my outgrown satin pajama sets and turned them into a colorful kimono jacket set, which is artsy enough to wear for many occasions.

I love satin pajamas! They look luxurious with their satin textures and appearance. It is only frustrating when they don’t fit me anymore, but I couldn’t have the heart to discard them in the charity bins. Most of them are well used for more than three years, have been with me during my great dreams, travel with them, bringing them to many places. My relationships with them are too precious to ignore.

It may sound odd to others, but I do treat my clothes like my good friends.

Sometimes they are better than my actual friends, to be honest.

I found this embroidered silk placemat with oriental embroidery and placed it in the center of the jacket. Somehow, it all complements each other!

I think I should bring this set on my next trip to Japan and learn more about their local ikasu technique of giving many discarded materials a second chance at life.

Visiting the Golden Dragon Museum in Bendigo, VIC

Just in time for this month’s celebration of the Chinese Lunar New Year, welcoming the Year of the Fire Horse, I’d like to share with you my experience when we visited the famous Golden Dragon Museum in Bendigo, VIC.

Personally, I always enjoy paying a visit to a local Chinese Museum. The amount of history, arts, and culture combined in each place is often a great way to understand the community and its aspirations for its future.

This could be the second Chinese Museum I visited here in Australia, the first one is the Chinese Museum in Melbourne, VIC.

Since opening its doors in 1991, the Golden Dragon Museum has been a favorite destination for locals and visitors alike. With an impressive collection of more than 30,000 objects and artifacts, the museum is dedicated to preserving the Chinese arts, history, and culture that is an integral part of the region and throughout the wider Australia.

During my visit (March 2025), it seems that the museum is having an ongoing renovation/rehabilitation project; hence, many artifacts are securely stored somewhere, and several artifacts on display are in a quite small area. The museum was a bit dimmer, quite dark inside, and I only used a photo-editing tool to do justice to these amazing images.

This museum is also the home of the world’s oldest Dragon called ‘Loong' (literally translates to Dragon), which debuted in the Easter Fair in 1901. Loong is 29 metres in length, and his colorful adorned in green, gold, and red satin and pom poms, with a giant head and a mouth that could eat you whole.

History of the Dragon Parade

For more than a century, Bendigo’s streets have come alive with the vibrant presence of processional dragons - a tradition only paused by the COVID pandemic and the occasional bout of heavy rain. Since 1892, these magnificent creatures have become enduring symbols of Bendigo’s cultural identity, captivating generations of locals and visitors alike.

They remain a centrepiece of the Bendigo Easter Festival and have travelled far beyond the city, delighting audiences across south‑eastern Australia. Loong, for instance, famously appeared in Melbourne’s 1901 Federation celebrations and today holds the remarkable title of being the oldest surviving complete processional dragon in the world.

Supported by the City of Greater Bendigo Community Grant program, this exhibition shines a spotlight on the full lineage of Bendigo’s dragons, including the lesser‑known figures and those lost to history. Among them are two dragons that predate Loong (named Sun Loong and Dai Gum Loong), their stories preserved through community memory and archival fragments. Together, they reveal a rich and evolving tradition that continues to shape Bendigo’s cultural landscape.

Sometime in 2024, there’s a report of vandalism throughout six reported sites in Bendigo, including the Bendigo Golden Dragon Museum on the list.

The motives of these two perpetrators are racism, which is not tolerable in modern Australian society. The federal government has offered $100,000 towards the restoration of the world's oldest processional dragon Loong, and other important artefacts at Bendigo's Golden Dragon Museum.

Changing Times: Posters from the Stuart E. Fraser Collection

The Golden Dragon Museum has teamed up with La Trobe University to unveil a fascinating new temporary exhibition that shines a fresh light on mid‑century China. Changing Times: Posters from the Stuart E. Fraser Collection brings forward a rarely seen selection of political posters that once shaped public thinking on civic duty, public health, community life, and national unity.

Curated by Dr Jacqui Shelton of the La Trobe Art Institute, the exhibition showcases 19 standout works carefully chosen from an extraordinary archive of more than 4,000 posters. This remarkable collection was assembled by Emeritus Professor Stewart E. Fraser (1929–2001), founder of La Trobe’s School of Education, during his many research trips to China throughout the mid to late 1900s.

These posters are bold, colourful, and rich with historical context offer visitors a vivid glimpse into the visual culture of a rapidly changing nation. Through Dr. Shelton’s thoughtful curation, the exhibition not only highlights the artistic qualities of these works but also reveals the social messages and political aspirations they once carried.

Yi Yuan Garden

A visit to the Golden Dragon Museum would not be complete without a walk through the beautiful Yi Yuan Garden. Admire the weeping flowering cherry tree, feed the fish, and enjoy the peace this tranquil area of bustling Bendigo CBD offers.

Tucked beside the Golden Dragon Museum, the Yi Yuan Gardens (Garden of Joy) feel like a gentle exhale, a serene counterpoint to the museum’s vibrant dragon displays. Designed by Australian landscape architect Albert Chong and inspired by the elegance of Suzhou‑style gardens, this space invites you to slow down, wander, and simply be.

As you stepped through the entrance, the city noise softened into the background. In its place came the soothing murmur of water and the soft rustle of leaves, as if the garden itself were welcoming me into a quieter world. Classical Chinese gardens are built on symbolism, and Yi Yuan is rich with meaning in every corner.

Water Features

Ponds, waterfalls, and winding streams weave through the landscape, symbolising life, continuity, and the flowing energy of Qi. Their gentle sound has a way of calming the mind almost instantly.

Rocks and Stone

Strategically placed stones—chosen for their sculptural shapes and textures—represent mountains, strength, and endurance. They anchor the garden with a sense of timelessness.

Plants

Bamboo for resilience, pine for longevity, plum blossoms for perseverance—each plant is chosen with intention. Together, they create a living tapestry that shifts beautifully with the seasons.

Pavilions and Bridges

Curved bridges guide you along meandering paths, while elegant pavilions offer shaded spots to pause and reflect. They feel like invitations to linger.

I eventually found a quiet bench overlooking a koi pond, where flashes of orange and gold drifted lazily beneath the surface. It was the perfect place to let everything I’d learned at the museum settle in, a moment of stillness that deepened my appreciation for the culture behind it all.

Kuan Yin Temple: A Spiritual Sanctuary

Located within the gardens is the Kuan Yin Temple, a serene and active place of worship dedicated to Kuan Yin, the Buddhist Goddess of Mercy. This isn’t a relic preserved behind glass—it’s a living spiritual centre for the local Chinese community, and visitors of all backgrounds are warmly welcomed.

Inside, the temple glows with the soft light of candles and the scent of incense. Intricate carvings and traditional altars create an atmosphere that feels both sacred and deeply comforting. Standing there, you gain a powerful sense of the spiritual practices that sustained Chinese immigrants through hardship and change.

What struck me most was how seamlessly the temple connects past and present. It’s a reminder that the museum isn’t just preserving history; it’s honouring a culture that continues to thrive, adapt, and guide its community today.

In this peaceful corner of Bendigo, surrounded by water, stone, and prayer, you feel the heartbeat of a tradition that has travelled across oceans yet remains beautifully intact.

How I Made My Own Australian Citizenship Ceremony Dress from Scratch

A lot of things happened last year that I haven’t blog, been busy living my quiet life being on the crafty upcycling zone, and I kinda like it. But this one is something I would love to share with you, and hope to inspire many, especially you, who love sustainable fashion, colors, and other things related to living here in Australia.

One of the greatest milestones of my life is becoming a full-pledged Australian citizen!

To this day, I still couldn’t believe I finally feel belonged to this land that I have come to love and respect. The people I met, from being just acquiantances turn to valuable friends, to building a new life with my family, everything is because of them… they made my transition to a new life easier, and here I am full of gratitude!

What would be a better way to commemorate this great milestone than by creating my own Australian Citizenship dress!

I’ve read several citizenship ceremony posts on various social media, and it is awesome to see that there are growing number of new Australians proudly donning their motherland’s traditional clothing, and I reckon it is totally cool!

To show how proud I am of being a new generation of Australians, I decided to create my own citizenship dress using the materials I already have in my studio.

Using the old duvet cover that I’ve been saving for a couple of years, I was so excited to turn this material into a dress. The gradient pink color reminds me of the beautiful Pink Lake Hutt Lagoon in Western Australia, and how intriguing to learn how this local algae becomes an important component in producing global production of natural food coloring.

September (my citizenship month) is the beginning of the Australian spring season; thus, it is fitting to wear something comfortable, with lots of color inspired by many local gardens.

Using several cotton fabrics with various prints and colors, I created heaps of yoyo flowers in various sizes and hand-stitched them all into the dress. The yoyo flowers remind me of the wild blooms along the Kalbarri National Park in Western Australia.

The idea of using the yoyo flower pattern is something that I remember from my 4th-grade sewing class, and since then, making them has given me so much joy. My Australian family helped me to fulfill my dream and desire to be more creative in fashion and design, freely expressing my thoughts and feelings through fashion.

I used the kaftan pattern because I always find them quite regal in a sense. The free-flowing fabric swaying as you walk is very uplifting, IMHO. No wonder I made several kaftan-inspired dresses recently, and they are very comfortable and practical.

I started this project in November 2024, making heaps of yoyo flowers while watching tons of Netflix shows, listening to podcasts, or while roadtripping with my husband. Everything is made from scratch, hand-embroidering the dress, and I am living it!
