I find Madrid simply Marvelous for all that it offers its citizens and guests. The landscape is shaped by parks and beautiful architecture. The air is filled with the fragrance of stews, fried foods, and simmering spices. Hear church bells ringing and the faithful in the thousands going to worship in peace. Take an afternoon and visit a museum that houses some of the greatest works of art in the world. Shop for antiques, designer duds, or art in the galleries. Madrid has concerts, opera, and sporting events. This city offers something for everyone at every price point. My favorite time to visit this capital city is at Christmas. They do holiday lights like no other city in the world! The holiday markets and light displays make one feel like a child again. It makes one believe in magic.

Madrid’s cuisine reflects the city itself: historic, energetic, and shaped by people and products from across Spain. Madrid has a culinary identity that comes from being the capital, it’s location inland, a tradition of shared meals and small plates, and bar culture. The result is a food scene that is eclectic; traditional buts up against contemporary, sweet meets spicy, and long leisurely meals are celebrations of life. The pastry shops, bars, sandwich joints, and markets all make the culinary landscape of Madrid memorable. The restaurants that have seaming stews, hipster tapas, the most tender cuts of beef from Leon, and fried calamares are unforgettable and define excellence. Bring expandable pants. You will not lose weight here.

Magnificent Dishes to try in Madrid

Cocido madrileño is a hearty winter stew that is usually served in stages: first the broth, that can have fine noodles; then the chickpeas and vegetables such as cabbage, carrot, and potato; and finally the meats, which may include beef, pork, and other cuts. As it takes time to eat, it is seen as a social dish between family or friends.

Callos a la madrileña is a traditional winter dish. Cooked with tripe and typically made with chorizo, morcilla, paprika, and a robust sauce, it represents the city’s tradition of kitchen sink cooking. Callos a la madrileña is served in numerous old-style Madrid taverns.

Bocadillo de calamares is a calamari sandwich and one of Madrid’s most beloved foods. It is portable, simple, and easy to make. It is a crusty roll filled with breaded fried squid rings. The sandwich is especially associated with the area around Plaza Mayor.

Croquettes– deep fried small soft often rounded or oblong masses consisting usually of minced meat, cheese, fish, or vegetable coated with egg and breadcrumbs seasoned

Patatas Bravas– fried seasoned potato wedged that tends to have a dip

Churros con Chocolate– fried dough that is dipped in warm chocolate.

Gazpacho it’s a cold Spanish tomato soup, traditionally made with tomatoes, olive oil, bread, garlic, pepper, cucumber, vinegar, and salt. Served in Plaza Mayor in tubs to go back to your hotel if you want!

Paella is a noted Spanish rice dish, traditionally associated more with Valencia than Madrid, but served all over Madrid. It’s usually made with rice, olive oil, saffron, vegetables, and then seafood, chicken, sausage, or a mixed combination depending on the style. Go to the supermarkets to get mixes to bring home and go to stores to buy special Paella pans to make this dish in like a pro!

Bartolillos are sweet fried turnovers filled with custard that are eaten in Madrid during Holy Week. Get them in Madrid’s classic bakeries (La Mallorquina, El Riojano, La Duquesita) only at the start of Holy Week.

Rosquillas are traditional Spanish doughnuts that are shaped into rings or small twisted rounds, lightly fried, and coated with sugar. They are hearty yet airy, with a subtle citrus twang from lemon. They are not heavily glazed doughnuts.

The Mercados of Madrid are some of the easiest ways to experience Spanish food without committing to a large dish. Think of it like speed dating. Take a bite and move on. The mercados offer something for everyone in every price range. They often feel like a culinary celebration! Below are some of the best food markets in Madrid:

• Mercado de San Miguel — The most famous gourmet market and centrally located gourmet market, Mercado de San Miguel is ideal for sampling many Spanish specialties in one stop near the Palace and Plaza Mayor. There are over 30 stands and a wide range of seafood, pastries, tapas, meats, cheeses, and drinks.
• Mercado de la Paz — one of Madrid’s oldest markets in Salamanca, that is less touristy. It has a more local vibe. Known for quality produce.
• Mercado de San Fernando — in Lavapiés, with a hipper character and a mix of foods to choose from.
• Mercado de Vallehermoso —in Chamberí, with bars and restaurants near market stalls for those that want a sit-down experience.
• Mercado de San Antón — is a more modern mercado in Chueca, known for tapas, deli products, and its contemporary setting.

Madrid’s has incredible world class Museums! Go see Goya, Sorolla, Picasso, Vicente, or an ancient coat of armor. You can spend weeks just going from one museo to the next! Get tickets online so you do not have to wait online.

• Prado Museum — renown for classic Spanish and European art that is housed in a beautiful building
• Reina Sofía Museum — Huge cutting edge modern and contemporary art museum that includes Picasso’s Guernica and works by Esteban Vicente.
• Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum — is known for their broad art collection and interesting exhibitions
• National Archaeological Museum —known for Spanish history and ancient artifacts
• Sorolla Museum — Dedicated to the painter Sorolla, this intimate museum is for art lovers
• Museum of the History of the Jewish Community of Madrid — a small but noted museum inside the Jewish Community center that showcases the contemporary Jewish history in Madrid. Visits should be booked ahead of time.

Also consider: Centro Sefarad-Israel — a major cultural institution dedicated to Sephardic heritage, Jewish culture, Holocaust memory, and dialogue between Spain, Israel, and Jewish communities. It is located in the Palacio de Cañete on Calle Mayor.

Madrid is one of those cities that you can visit again and again. Each time you see new sites, taste new foods, and do different things. Moments in Madrid tend to be magical. The people are inviting, the food is distinctive and vibrant, the culture is rich, and the city is clean. What more can you want?

Our final Pride Month post is from WS Game Company and includes a Gay NYC icon. WS Game Company has created a Monopoly version using Keith Haring’s life, art, and legacy to celebrate the 40^th anniversary of Pop Shop, which was opened by Keith Haring in 1986. So, this is really both a Pride Month story and a fine art in toys story.

What’s in the box?

Keith Haring Monopoly is the classic Monopoly game, but with Keith Haring-themed tokens and properties. The tokens represent some of Keith Haring’s iconic characters, including the baby, the skateboarder, the dog, the heart, the dancing figure, and the barking dog. The Monopoly properties run from Reading, Pennsylvania, where Haring was born, through his lasting legacy of Pop Shop (Tokyo and NY, representing Broadway and Park Place). The box itself is an art piece – with Keith Haring images on all sides, with a magnetic closure and a velvet-lined compartmentalized interior that holds everything in place between games. The Community Chest and Chance cards are Pop Shop and Heart cards in this version. Instead of railroads, there are subway stations. Even the Monopoly money has been Haringed.

How to play Keith Haring Monopoly

This is a standard Monopoly game. You roll the rainbow-pipped dice, and move your token around the board collecting properties, building houses (decorated with dancing figures) and hotels (boomboxes). The Gameplay Guide includes a 2-page biography of Keith Haring, and the instructions for how to play the game, which is the same as regular Monopoly.

TOP TIP: My favorite instruction page is the last one, which admonishes players to “PLAY IT RIGHT.” Monopoly has moved so far from its original purpose that people are usually shocked by how quickly the game goes when you play by the actual rules, which include immediately auctioning off properties that are not purchased by the first player to land on them.

How to win Keith Haring Monopoly

As with the original Monopoly, the game ends when every other player but one has gone bankrupt. If the bank runs out of money, it’s fine to “print” more by writing on pieces of paper, but once a player is out of money, that’s the end of the game for them.

TOP TIP: It’s fine to have house rules, but if someone insists on playing by the actual rules, you should do so. Playing any game by its actual rules lets you experience the game the way it was meant to be played. Plus, different houses may have different house rules, so having the instructions for actual play will minimize disputes.

Keith Haring Monopoly is designed for players who are 8 or older. The game is highly competitive, so maybe let the littles watch to learn or help out with the bank (passing out Go money or accepting and sorting fees and taxes), but be careful of the small pieces, especially the houses. There are six tokens, so up to six people can play. As with the original Monopoly, Keith Haring Monopoly is a really fun game, lively and challenging. Keith Haring Monopoly would make a great gift and looks beautiful as a display piece.

Father’s Day is celebrated all around the world. It is a day filled with fun, food, family, and usually a bit of friction. The menu can be anything, but for many it has BBQ, meats, pies, and salads. Celebrations can be just a meal but for most, it usually lasts a day to honor our main man-Dad!

Casual Outdoor dining can help set the stage for a fantastic Father’s Day. Buffet-style meals tend to be easiest, so guests can build their own Father’s Day plates. Today, there are beautiful paper products to use so there can be quick clean ups and hosts are not stuck in the kitchen for hours. Decorations can be simple or elaborate balloon displays or pictures of Dad on every table.

Families all sit around the table to roast and toast Dad, so the meals on this day are important. While we all may not celebrate on the same date, there are common Father’s Day foods from around the world. They include:

• Australia & New Zealand (1^st Sunday in September): barbecue, seafood, salads, and pavlova.
• Argentina (3^rd Sunday June): asado with carne, chimichurri, empanadas, and red wine.
• Brazil (2^nd Sunday in August): churrasco, grilled meat, rice, beans, farofa, and cold drinks.
• Germany (40^th day after Easter): sausages, schnitzel, roast pork, potatoes, pretzels, and beer.
• India (3^rd Sunday June): biryani, kebabs, curries, naan, and sweets.
• Japan (3^rd Sunday June): sushi, sashimi, ramen, yakitori, or steak.

We’ve got a new Fine Art in Toys review. Jonathan Adler’s Rainbow Hand is another wonderful puzzle from Galison. Jonathan Adler is famous for his pottery and interior design. His Rainbow Hand jigsaw puzzle is not only an expression of modern home décor, but it is also a great Pride Month gift for yourself or your LGBTQIA+ family and friends. It is so pretty that your littles will love it, too, just for its aesthetic appeal.

Galison, a fine art gifts provider, makes beautiful jigsaw puzzles, as you saw in our Christian LaCroix Love Who You Want puzzle review. The Jonathan Adler Rainbow Hand puzzle was inspired by Jonathan Adler’s interior design art and comes in a gorgeously-detailed box, which opens via a ribbon pull, which opens a drawer. The Jonathan Adler Rainbow Hand box includes the puzzle pieces and a full-color poster of the image to work from.

Jonathan Adler Rainbow Hand jigsaw puzzle is of a rainbow pouring into (or out of?) a manicured hand. The art piece itself is called “Bright Catch” so it is more likely to be pouring into the hand, but it really looks like it’s pouring forth from the hand. Maybe we’re the ones making the catch. The colors are vibrant and the gold accents make it even more lush. Because the puzzle is not framed, it is a bit more challenging to put together, especially the arch of the rainbow. The pieces are about an inch in size, but some are bigger and some are much smaller, due to the shape.

TOP TIP: I sorted the puzzle pieces by color, which let me complete each rainbow stripe separately. That did not help much, challenge-wise, but I like having a goal and completing puzzles step-by-step.

As with the Christian LaCroix Love Who You Want puzzle, I loved putting this puzzle together and have my eye on a couple of other Jonathan Adler puzzles, too, especially the Jonathan Adler Infinity Wooden puzzle, the Shelfie puzzle, and the Bargello panorama puzzle (nostalgia for me – I used to do Bargello needlepoint as a kit). The completed puzzle is about 19” x 29” and the total number of pieces is 750.There is no age range for this puzzle, but some of the pieces are very small, so keep that in mind for your littles.
