The intersection of electronic music, virtual reality engineering, and speculative fiction came to Edinburgh’s Pleasance venue this weekend as Cymera 2026 welcomed Synthonie for a live performance. Billed as a fusion of cinematic sci-fi soundscapes and gaming music, the project is the brain-child of multi-talented IT engineer, developer, and composer Christian Freund (known simply as Chris).

The performance at Cymera marked a significant milestone for the project, following Chris’s relocation from Bonn, Germany, to Birmingham after being endorsed by Arts Council England under the Global Talent scheme. The Edinburgh audience was treated to a genuine premiere: the first-ever live performance of “Cyberpunk Two,” a track composed entirely since Chris took up residency in the United Kingdom, serving as a direct sequel to his established piece, “Cyberpunk One.”

Musically, Synthonie positions itself somewhere between the sweeping synth-heavy arrangements of Blade Runner 2049 and the atmospheric tension of modern roleplaying games and tactical video game scores, such as Warhammer 40,000 or Death Stranding. Behind Chris, a large projection screen cycled through evocative, stylised clips from iconic geek culture properties including Cyberpunk 2077, The Expanse, and Ghost in the Shell, anchoring each track to its explicit thematic material.

Chris is undoubtedly a highly capable performer and an intriguing technical innovator. Front and centre in his setup is the “Musitar”, a custom-built, multifunctional MIDI instrument of his own invention that blends the form factor and tactile utility of a guitar with the triggering capabilities of a keyboard. The performance also featured his recurring digital stage partner, Syndarella. While introduced to the audience as an artificial intelligence, Syndarella is a legacy feature of the project, first debuting in 2019, predating the current mainstream generative AI and large language model trends. In practice, she functions less like an autonomous machine and more like an animated, on-screen virtual YouTuber (V-Tuber) avatar, adding faux-conversation to the set, though the concept occasionally feels a little dated given today’s rapid technological shifts. Dare I suggest it? Rebranding Syndarella away from AI might be a savvy move.

The music itself is pleasant, well-constructed, and highly reminiscent of transactional video game scores – evoking the exact sort of mid-tempo tension you might expect when a digital antagonist is levelling up, or a player is exploring an expansive cybernetic cityscape. However, for those leaning toward the heavier “electro-rock” side of synthwave, the performance rarely builds to the explosive, high-crescendo peaks that define the genre’s more intense live acts. The tracks felt mathematically precise and safe, keeping the energy firmly in third gear rather than shifting up into a more aggressive, floor-shaking overdrive.

This safe execution highlighted a slight disconnect with the venue. The clean, polite surroundings of The Pleasance bar sat awkwardly between two ideal environments. The music would serve beautifully as a sophisticated, atmospheric background track to a quiet night of drinks and conversation with friends. Alternatively, it could come fully alive if placed inside a dedicated, smoke-filled arena, backed by strobe lights and dramatic stage production, to lean into the eerie, gothic undertones of the source material. Placed in a standard festival bar setting, it fell somewhat between the two stools.

Ultimately, Synthonie delivers a technically accomplished and melodic tribute to the modern sci-fi canon. While it may lack the raw, kinetic punch required to captivate general rock or electronic live music fans, it remains a thoroughly pleasing experience. For dedicated enthusiasts of synthwave, cyberpunk aesthetics, and custom music tech, Chris’s unique blend of software engineering and live performance is well worth an hour of your time.

Welcome home. This is Audio EXP, the weekly podcast from Geek Native. I am your host, Girdy, and today is the 6th of June, 2026. This week, we are dissecting a critical economic crisis affecting independent creators, reviewing the structural realities of a record-shattering convention weekend, and unpacking major post-expo system announcements.

I also think someone has been messing with the intro music.

Our lead story this week addresses a severe administrative and financial pain that is actively threatening the independent publishing space. We are tracking a growing crisis surrounding the tabletop AI tax, exploring why policing machine learning is costing indies their livelihood.

The core of the problem stems from a hypervigilant community sentiment, in which public observers frequently call out indie projects with sudden accusations of “this is AI art.” Whether those claims are true or completely baseless, independent publishers are being forced to halt their production pipelines to comprehensively document their creative processes, show their step-by-step layer histories, and actively persuade sceptics that no generative machine learning was used. Navigating these public protests is draining a great deal of time and money from small creators. It is creating a brutal structural tax on human-led studios, threatening to choke out indie diversity simply because solitary designers cannot afford to lose days of labour to constant, exhaustive public defence.

Sound dramatic? That was the consensus at UK Games Expo’s AI and Tabletop panel. There’s a write-up on the blog, but another consensus point was that no one wants to pay for AI creative output.

This surprising take on AI comes right on the heels of an absolutely historic weekend in Birmingham. The 20th anniversary of the UK Games Expo has officially shattered all previous NEC attendance records, welcoming an unprecedented 51,196 unique visitors and pushing total three-day footfall to a staggering 87,837 people. However, this massive success meant local infrastructure buckled under the weight of the crowds. The sheer density of bodies caused phone signals to drop, the venue’s Wi-Fi to fail, and on Saturday, the hottest day of the convention, the air conditioning to fail completely for a while, leaving the halls oppressively hot. Bring a fan, and you’ll be alright.

UK Games Expo 2026 breaks NEC attendance records as infrastructure buckles under massive crowds

Despite the sweltering heat, the celebratory mood remained intact as the UKGE People’s Choice awards were handed out by Olympic gold medalist Bryony Page and Luke Gygax. Tabletop roleplaying game fans will be thrilled to see Loot Tavern Publishing secure the Roleplaying Award for Ryoko’s Guide to the Yokai Realms. Crucially, the convention also debuted the historic, poignant Patrick Campbell Award to honour the show’s late co-founder. Rather than going to an industry titan, the inaugural award for best stand went to first-time exhibitor It’s Not Games for their highly thematic, accessibility-focused debut title, It’s Not Cricket. For a full breakdown of the event, check out our report on how the UK Games Expo 2026 breaks NEC attendance records and review the full UKGE 2026 People’s Choice winners write-up.

The post-expo scoop machine has also been incredibly active this week.
Meanwhile, alternative rule sets are gaining significant momentum. Savage SLA was unveiled at UK Games Expo, formally bringing the iconic, dystopian SLA Industries setting over to the Savage Worlds rules engine. This preview landed at the Expo, giving fans an immediate look at the game. Did you know that at one time SLA 2e was going to be a Savage Worlds RPG but was thwarted by the strict PG13 license the system demands.

If you are looking to step away from traditional high fantasy or sci-fi entirely, we have two major design reveals that lean heavily into independent storytelling. First, we take a look at a setting with 90s paranoia inside the Midnight of the Century RPG. It is a highly stylistic project that trades modern digital tropes for analogue investigative horror, and it’s by Runecairn publisher By Odin’s Beard.

Finally, we wrap up this week by looking at how to bring these sweltering summer temperatures directly to your table. Our featured essay explores the growing “Summerween” or “Gothic Summer” aesthetic, examining how daylight dread and the rot of peak abundance can be used to subvert classic tabletop horror tropes. It is a design framework that replaces dark dungeons with oppressive, blinding midday sun and agricultural decay.
Cymera, which launched in 2019 to champion speculative fiction in Scotland, is currently hosting its hybrid weekend event in Edinburgh, offering both in-person panels, workshops, and vendor spaces alongside an international online streaming programme. The festival runs through Sunday, 7 June 2026. Valley of Cats was released specifically to coincide with the weekend convention and is available in paperback and digital formats on Amazon and Itch.io.

The GNAT system mechanics

Valley of Cats is written using the GNAT system, a minimalist tabletop ruleset designed by Donachie to enable rapid tactical play with minimal record-keeping. Combining traditional roleplaying game mechanics with branching narrative pathways, the system simulates danger and mechanical jeopardy through choices and random outcomes without bogging players down in heavy inventory management. The game requires only two standard dice, a pencil, and an adventurous spirit to play.

Narrative and entry structure

The adventure marks a return to the fantasy world of Paldoria. While it functions as a loose sequel to Donachie’s previous title, Grave of the Kraken, it is written as a completely self-contained story that requires no prior knowledge of the earlier books.

The paperback edition spans 250 narrative entries, rather than standard pages, and includes several full-page illustrations. The plot sees the player tracking down a rogue wizard:

After betraying the masters of Treysham, the wizard Malphas has fled to the mountain beyond the Valley of Cats, and you have been chosen to enact the Master’s revenge. But is Malphas merely in hiding, or does he have a more sinister plan? And what is the role of the long-forgotten Mother of Cats?

Live from the UK Games Expo 2026, industry leaders break down the devastating timeline and financial costs of policing generative AI allegations in independent tabletop publishing.

The recent UK Games Expo (UKGE) 2026 hosted a stark reality check for the tabletop industry. While tech evangelists often paint artificial intelligence as an inevitable efficiency tool, a packed panel discussion in the NEC Board Room revealed a far more corrosive reality: generative AI is actively destroying the social contract between tabletop creators, publishers, and fans. Worse still, the mere fear of AI is draining the most precious resource independent roleplaying game publishers have: their time.

The panel, titled Generative AI and Tabletop and moderated by Evie Moriarty, Lead Game Designer at Modiphius Entertainment, brought together a diverse group of industry voices. The panel included AI researcher Dr Grace Feehan, RPG designer and union representative Corey Davis, professional illustrator Per Janke, MyMiniFactory community manager Matt Backa, and CJ Shearwood of Improbable Solutions, a software engineer who uses machine learning professionally. Conspicuously absent from the room was any voice willing to defend generative AI in a creative capacity. Instead, the conversation quickly pivoted to a sobering examination of industry paranoia, corporate over-correction, and the rise of “Shadow AI.”

The “AI Police” Tax on Independent Publishers

The most alarming revelation from the floor was the sheer amount of time and money independent publishers are being forced to spend defending themselves against AI allegations. The panel agreed that generative AI is not necessarily creating new systemic issues, but rather exacerbating pre-existing structural flaws in the tabletop industry. Bad actors who wish to cut corners, cheat creators, and underpay artists have always existed; generative AI simply hands them a faster, cheaper shovel.

However, the blowback from a hyper-vigilant community has created an entirely new operational bottleneck. When internet communities or fans accuse a small press publisher of utilising AI art or text, whether those accusations are accurate or entirely unfounded, the response pipeline obliterates the publisher’s schedule.

For an independent studio, proving a negative requires a massive expenditure of unbillable hours. Staff must halt actual development to pull up raw layered illustration files, cross-reference artist contracts, verify sketches, and draft public statements to stave off a community backlash that can permanently tank a crowdfunding campaign or retail launch. In an industry where most small presses operate as passion projects or micro-businesses, this “AI policing” tax is actively draining the financial reserves of the very people the community aims to protect.

The Poison of “Shadow AI” and Broken Trust

This environment of absolute scrutiny has given rise to what the panel termed “Shadow AI”, a phenomenon in which individuals or creators utilise machine learning tools in secret, keeping them entirely off the radar due to deep professional embarrassment or fear of public cancellation.

This culture of secrecy is actively poisoning peer-to-peer relationships within the creative community. Illustrators are looking at their peers’ output with unprecedented cynicism, wondering if a competitor’s speed or low pricing is the result of human work or automated assistance. Similarly, art directors and publishers commissioning freelance work are left second-guessing their contractors, terrified that a piece of hidden generative art might slip past their checks and trigger a catastrophic public relations crisis.

To combat this erosion of trust, some platforms are attempting to reward transparency rather than punish suspicion. Matt Backa highlighted an initiative by MyMiniFactory, which grants a “Soul Badge” to trusted community members who demonstrate a proven, highly verifiable track record of high-quality, human-made work. The philosophy here shifts the battleground: rather than burning infinite hours attacking or policing AI, the platform aims to actively celebrate and financially elevate human craftsmanship.

The Threshold: Where Do We Draw the Line?

The panel also exposed a massive gap between public sentiment and technological reality. While Dr Grace Feehan presented survey evidence demonstrating that consumers are overwhelmingly hostile toward generative AI in creative assets, stating that audiences actively avoid board games or roleplaying game books designed by machine learning, public tolerance shifts dramatically when the technology is used for logistical or administrative facilitation.

This dichotomy led to the panel’s most challenging concluding argument, which Moriarty raised towards the end of the session. If the tabletop community demands an absolute, zero-tolerance stance against AI, at what point does that claim become a mechanical lie?

Depending on how broadly a company defines the term, AI is already ubiquitous. It lives inside the spellcheckers and grammar tools used by writers. It drives the automated image optimisation and alt-text generation within professional layout software. It compresses website data so a publisher’s web store loads quickly on a mobile phone, drives the cybersecurity protocols that defend independent forums, and filters out viruses from community emails.

When a publisher boldly claims “No AI was used in the making of this game,” they generally mean no generative AI was used to replace human illustrators or writers. Yet, as the reaction from the UKGE audience made clear, many spectators remain completely unaware of just how deeply non-generative machine learning is woven into the standard digital pipeline.

With trillions of dollars being poured into machine learning globally and new models launching multiple times a year, the technology is advancing at a velocity that law, administration, and social norms cannot match. The tabletop industry is nowhere near resolving this internal conflict, making it highly probable that the exact same debate will pack out rooms at UKGE 2027. Unless, as CJ predicted, the corporate pyramid scheme of dodgy finance deals that underpins this yet-to-make-a-profit technology collapses horribly in the next few months.

Global sci-fi and pop culture retailing giant Forbidden Planet has announced it will open a major new branch in Reading town centre this autumn. The development marks a significant physical expansion for the brand’s southern retail network, positioning a massive new corporate flagship directly into the heart of Berkshire’s cultural and commercial hub.

The new store, scheduled to open its doors in September, will be located at units 1b and 1c Queens Walk. The site places the retailer inside the Broad Street Mall, directly establishing a new anchor for pop culture merchandise, manga, graphic novels, collectables, and card games within the region.

Strategic Cultural Clustering

The selection of Queens Walk anchors Forbidden Planet underneath the Reading Biscuit Factory, a popular independent three-screen cinema, bar, and community hub. This positioning is commercially clever by capturing the natural crossover among film-goers, genre fans, and collectors in a single downtown location.

Furthermore, the new location introduces a high-density cluster of hobby retailers. Forbidden Planet’s chosen units will place them as immediate neighbours to the mall’s long-standing dedicated Warhammer store, concentrating the town’s geek culture footprint into a single, high-traffic destination.

Andrew Sumner, Chief Operating Officer of Forbidden Planet, expressed long-term corporate ambitions for the region in a statement:

We’ve been dreaming of bringing Forbidden Planet to Reading for decades and, at last, that dream has morphed into a 21st century reality. This vibrant town – the jewel of the Thames Valley – is a spirited locale with a richly-diverse cultural scene. We can’t wait to introduce the feel-good power of Forbidden Planet to the community!”

Market Competition and the High Street Ecosystem

The arrival of a premier corporate chain reshapes the local high street ecosystem, which already features a dedicated independent comic shop, Crunch Comics, located nearby in the Harris Arcade. While independent retailers traditionally face distinct overhead pressures when a major multinational footprint arrives, industry observers note that the scale of Forbidden Planet, coupled with the town’s direct connection to London via the Elizabeth Line, may serve to cement Reading as a premier regional shopping hub for hobbyists.

The launch window also aligns with a busy autumn schedule for local fan communities. The store’s opening will precede Reading Comic Con and the Reading Card Show, both scheduled to take place at the nearby Rivermead Leisure Complex, providing an immediate local audience for the branch’s emphasis on collectable card games and action figures.

The Broad Street Mall site is currently undergoing final preparations ahead of the autumn fit-out. The expansion follows recent UK retail moves by Titan Entertainment Group, further consolidating the brand’s presence across major British university towns and commercial centres.

Premium snack makers Joe & Seph's launch an official Supergirl movie tie-in popcorn mix, but the heroic red and blue aesthetic looks surprisingly pink and green.

The upcoming theatrical release of Supergirl, scheduled to arrive in British cinemas on 25 June, has sparked an unusual culinary experiment from London’s gourmet confectioners, Joe & Seph’s. The premium popcorn brand, headquartered in London, has officially rolled out its limited-edition Intergalactic Popcorn Mix to celebrate the cinematic launch.

However, achieving the iconic red-and-blue palette of the House of El appears to have posed a significant hurdle in the kitchen. Despite marketing materials explicitly promising “dazzling blue colour-coated Salted Caramel” and “vibrant red colour-coated Strawberries & Cream,” a visual inspection reveals that the finished product has physically landed closer to a distinct palette of pink and green.

The visual shift will not deter enthusiasts who value flavour over strict aesthetic accuracy. Joe & Seph’s utilises a signature air-popping technique, meaning the pink and green kernels still faithfully deliver the promised strawberries and cream profile alongside their traditional buttery-rich caramel. The product is officially certified as nut-free, gluten-free, and suitable for vegetarians. You know, if a Magic card came out with unexpected colours on the first print, it would be a collectable.

This is not the first time Joe & Seph’s has targeted the geek community with high-end confectionery. Tabletop gamers will remember their previous foray into official licensing with an official Dungeons & Dragons line, which featured a far more successful colour execution for its badass and spicy chocolate mix.

The Supergirl Competition

To mark the blockbuster tie-in, the confectionery brand is running a promotional draw alongside the product rollout. Film fans purchasing the mix can enter a competition to win a city break for two alongside a year’s supply of popcorn.

The specialist Intergalactic Popcorn Mix is priced at £5.00 per pouch, with free standard shipping available on orders over £35.00.

Discover how Juliette Burton’s Board to Distraction gamifies the traditional comedy stage with Trivial Pursuit mechanics designed specifically for introverted tabletop gamers heading to the Edinburgh Fringe.

UK Games Expo veterans seeking sanctuary from the crowded trading halls found an unexpected “third space” in the Meeple Theatre last week, and Edinburgh audiences are next in line.

Fresh off a successful multi-show run at UKGE 2026, award-winning comedian, cosplayer, and self-professed nerd Juliette Burton is officially bringing her interactive production, Board to Distraction, to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe this August. The move follows a slickly produced convention run that tested whether high-concept, tabletop-themed live entertainment can thrive as an alternative to the relentless buying and selling of the main exhibition floors.

Reporting from the floor of the Birmingham NEC, Geek Native sat in on Board to Distraction to evaluate its appeal for geeky hobbyists. Billed as an introvert-friendly game show, the production successfully targets the tabletop community’s specific interests. Unlike traditional stand-up or interactive comedy sets that rely on aggressive audience crowd work or involuntary participation, Burton’s format relies entirely on voluntary, team-based mechanics that mirror the safety of a party game.

The show operates on a structured trivia loop backed by a polished digital infrastructure. Using an interactive presentation on a huge TV screen managed by a dedicated assistant, Burton guides the room through a series of board game and tabletop roleplaying game trivia questions.

To participate, audience members form ad hoc groups based on playing cards handed out in the queue and shout out their team name to claim the buzzer. If the representative of the fastest team answers correctly, they receive a physical token. If they fail, the opportunity passes to the rest of the room.

The true appeal for hobbyists lies in how the show integrates actual board game design principles into its scoring system. Rather than tracking a simple linear point total, tokens are tied to a physical spinning wheel featuring distinct colour segments, highly reminiscent of Trivial Pursuit.

Winning the game requires a team to collect the highest variety of different colours rather than just raw numbers. This adds a layer of unexpected tactical depth to the comedy show; observant teams can actively execute hate-drafting strategies, answering specific questions solely to deny an opposing team the exact colour token they need to complete their set.

While the tone at UKGE occasionally faced a bit of friendly friction from the multi-generational makeup of the weekend-afternoon audience (the urge to make adult jokes is high), the production values and rapid-fire delivery highlighted the extensive behind-the-scenes preparation. The show lacks the mass-scale smartphone integration of tech-heavy live shows like Wi-Fi Wars, but its tight execution provides a fast-paced, highly engaging hour of alternative entertainment.

For live events heavily dominated by male-presenting acts, Burton remains a vital, distinct voice within the convention ecosystem. As tabletop conventions continue to expand in scale, the demand for spaces where attendees can sit down, escape the sensory overload of the commercial halls, and engage with geek culture without being sold a product is at an all-time high. Board to Distraction delivers exactly that balance.

Following the launch of the official festival program today, a new range of audiences can now secure tickets for the upcoming Edinburgh run via the Fringe box office, where Burton will look to prove that tabletop mechanics translate perfectly to the traditional comedy stage.

Beyond Cataclysm Books brings corporate despair to the tabletop with Mörk Org, an agile office culture parody game compatible with Mörk Borg that made its retail debut at the UK Games Expo.

Beyond Cataclysm has officially unleashed Mörk Org, the highly anticipated corporate parody hack of the acclaimed Mörk Borg engine, marking its formal physical retail debut at this year’s UK Games Expo. Known previously within the indie scene as the eccentric publisher that famously bought up every d13 die in the world for a solo RPG project, the UK-based studio shifted its gaze from cosmic horror to something far more terrifying: the modern workplace.

The project, which successfully raised £27,531 during its crowdfunding campaign, has seen physical books reach Kickstarter backers in recent weeks. For the wider public walking the convention floor, however, the event was the first opportunity to secure a physical copy of what is being described as “wretched office space in a hopeless place”.

Inside the Galgenplex

Designed and written by project lead CM Lowry, alongside production lead Dave Emmerson, Mörk Org strips away the typical dark fantasy ruins of traditional old-school revivals and replaces them with the Galgenplex, a sprawling, miserable corporate monolith dominated by pointless meetings, haunted photocopiers, and reality-warping human resources manuals.

The look and feel of the game maintains the distinct, chaotic aesthetic pioneered by Stockholm Kartell’s original system, bolstered by brand-new contributions from original Mörk Borg artist Johan Nohr. Far from a superficial reskin, the 100+ page hardback introduces distinct mechanical innovations specifically designed to simulate white-collar despair. Chief among these is a dedicated “Skill” stat tailored to specific corporate archetypes, allowing an Intern player character to specialise in tasks like “Sucking Up” or “Brewing Coffee”.

The game tracks corporate ladder progression through Promotion Points. Characters who cross the threshold of 10 points secure executive titles and mechanical pay rises, while those who drop to a dismal -10 are demoted to a “Level -1 Intern,” exposing them to further exploitation by management.

Cross-Borg Compatibility and First Impressions

A major draw for veteran players is the title’s built-in cross-compatibility with the broader “Borg” ecosystem, including the sci-fi horror of Cy_Borg and the nautical carnage of Pirate Borg. The physical edition includes explicit rules for “Cutthroats of the Cubicle Sea,” transforming mundane office furniture such as rolling chairs and executive desks into fully statted naval vessels, complete with hull agility, ramming capabilities, and crew capacity. The book also features a dedicated office-war-gaming miniature scenario penned by Will Rahman, creator of Forbidden Psalm.

First impressions from hands-on time with the book confirm that Mörk Org functions as an exceptionally agile system. Even for groups entirely unfamiliar with the core ruleset, the system takes mere moments to pick up and play. This frictionless barrier to entry makes it an ideal choice for a chaotic palette cleanser or a single-session parody between longer, more intensive tabletop campaigns.

The production value delivered by Beyond Cataclysm is excellent. Printed on premium recycled paper, the layout strikes a deliberate balance between bright, confrontational art pages for inspiration and ultra-clean, high-contrast tables designed for rapid reference during live play.

While the underlying themes of Mörk Org lampoon the soul-crushing nature of modern capitalism, the developers have taken a firm, real-world stance on creative labour. The manual contains an explicit anti-AI declaration, confirming that all text and artwork within the book were created exclusively by human authors and artists who were compensated above standard industry rates.

Fresh off the floor at the recently wrapped UK Games Expo 2026, British indie studio Parable Games showcased a busy upcoming slate. While the team is currently gearing up to release their highly anticipated dark fantasy setting, Sisterhood, at London’s Dragonmeet convention later this year, the biggest surprise from the Birmingham show floor was the detailed look at their next major horror expansion: SHIVER: Cryptids.

Clocking in at 196 beautifully illustrated pages, SHIVER: Cryptids shifts the award-winning horror system away from traditional cinematic survival and directly into the world of active monster hunting. The upcoming book focuses heavily on legendary North American folklore, offering full mechanical write-ups and scenarios for icons like the Mothman, the Chupacabra, and Bigfoot. According to the development team, Bigfoot remains the single most requested creature by the SHIVER community since the core game launched.

The original SHIVER system built its reputation by emulating classic horror movies, in which ordinary people desperately try to outlast slashers, aliens, and ancient entities. This expansion introduces a deliberate tonal and mechanical pivot, providing the structured rules and statistical backing required for player characters to actively track down, corner, and confront things that go bump in the night.

In-game, this hunting initiative is driven by a fictional, hyper-local publication called CREEPS (Cryptid Research and Esoteric Experiments in the Paranormal Society). Strongly inspired by Britain’s real-world Fortean Times magazine, the CREEPS setup gives players a clear operational framework. Characters mount up in heavily modified SUVs and “Bigfoot buses” to travel into deep wilderness spaces, attempting to photograph, document, or neutralise legendary monsters for the next monthly issue.

International Waves for British Indie Talent

The quiet buzz surrounding the announcement at UKGE points to a continuing trend of homegrown UK roleplaying game design capturing global attention. Notably, Jason Bulmahn, the Director of Game Design at Pathfinder publisher Paizo, was spotted picking up a copy of the SHIVER core system in his post-convention loot summaries, a significant nod of professional interest from one of the industry’s most prominent figures.

The formal crowdfunding pre-launch page for SHIVER: Cryptids is already live on BackerKit. Potential players should note that a copy of the original SHIVER Core Rulebook is required to make use of this supplement when it officially launches this summer.
