German is part of the Germanic language group, which includes Scandinavian languages (except Finnish), Dutch, and English. For many Europeans learning German is not as difficult as it is for many other of the world’s languages, as there is considerable overlap in vocabulary, grammar, and syntax. One of the more challenging aspects of learning German is that the language uses many long German words. Many of these long German words are in fact compound words. There are more details about how these German compound words are so common given below.

Why are German words so long?

As has already been mentioned, the principal reason why so many German words are so long is that combinations of words, called compound words, are common in German. German is not the only language that uses compound words. They are common in other languages, too, but rarely are there more than two words combined together. In German, it is not uncommon to come across words that are the combination of several other words all joined together. Some examples of these particularly long words are given below.

So, the fact that German has long words is not in itself remarkable, but it has in its vocabulary some very long words. These compound words tweak the meanings of the component words that have been joined together. To take a single example such as der Kühlschrank, which is a much used German compound word, made up of the words “Kühl” meaning “cool” in English, and “Schrank” meaning cupboard. However, the compound form actually means “refrigerator”! At this level, it isn’t any different from closed compound words in English: take words like “notebook” or “waistcoat” for example. They also, like similar short compound words in German, combine two words to make something that has its own unique meaning. But what about the very long words in German?

The longest words in German 

Every very long German word is quite unique and there are few other languages that can compare. One of the longest words that were official words used by German government organizations is Rindfleischetikettierungsüberwachungsaufgabenübertragungsgesetz. It has now been consigned to history as this compound word meant “the German law that controls the monitoring of beef labeling” after the emergence of mad cow disease when meat products were under suspicion. 

A trainee assistant social insurance broker is in German a “Sozialversicherungsfachangestelltenauszubildender”. Insurance companies that provide legal protection are known in German as “Rechtsschutzversicherungsgesellschaften”. This particular compound word is arguably the longest commonly used word in German.

Although learning long German compound words can seem quite challenging at first, remember that German speakers who are brought up with their own language think nothing about it. If they can learn to use these unique word combinations, so can you, as long as you persist!

Do I need a visa to study in Germany?

Anyone who is a citizen of another European Union (E.U.) country or a citizen of Iceland, Norway, Liechtenstein (E.E.A. nations), or Switzerland does not need a visa to study, live or work in Germany as these people have reciprocal rights. All other people must have a student visa of one sort or another to attend full-time studies in a German university or other tertiary institution. Note that not only is a student visa necessary, but a residence visa is also necessary if the studies extend for more than 3 months.

The three main types of German student visas

There are three main types of German student visas described more fully below.

#1 Student Applicant Visa

This visa allows the intending student time to visit Germany for up to 3 months and check out different universities and other course providers for themselves as well as work out whether studying in Germany is suitable for them and which course they should apply for. Once they have made a decision about a suitable course and the university of choice, they can apply to the university to get acceptance for a particular course. A letter of acceptance from a university is not in itself a visa but is a vital part of applying for a student visa.

#2 Student Visa 

This allows the student to come to Germany and study at a university or other institution which has officially accepted them for up to 3 months at a time. The time can be extended for further periods once in Germany.

#3 Language Course Visa

What is content localization?

Content localization is a refinement of translation that helps to make whatever content has been translated more readily understood or more readily appreciated by the target readership. At a very basic level, it converts things like currency, measurement units, and time zones to those used by the target population. It helps to avoid confusion, ridicule, or disgust when words are literally translated without thought to what the literally translated words might actually mean in another language. When meetings take place between political leaders who are not familiar with each other’s languages, consecutive interpreting is the norm. For example, say an American politician meets his or her Japanese counterpart; this is when this mode of interpreting will take place.

Relay interpreting

Relay interpreting is used when there is no direct way a language can be converted into another. One interpreter first converts the spoken words into an intermediary or common language. This is then converted into another language by another interpreter.

The main thing to remember when speaking German, especially if you are not fluent in the language and are rehearsing what to say if you are in a situation in which you need to thank someone is that German has two ways of referring to someone depending on whether they are well known to you (the informal way) or if you don’t have a relationship with that person (the formal way). If you are not sure, then opt for the more formal way of using “You”. 

Because German is actually quite similar to English in many ways, many of the phrases you could use in English could almost literally be translated into German, except for the exception noted above. There is also an interesting, particularly German way of responding to a thankyou (Danke) and that is using the German word for “please” (Bitte). This may sound rather odd, but in fact, is like saying “You’re welcome” – which is much more common in North America than it is in Britain or Australasia.
