Thai authorities have arrested a Nigerian national, Ikenna Patrick Azubuike, 36, over allegations that he led a major cocaine trafficking network that reportedly moved more than 380 million baht (approximately $11.5 million) through its accounts within the past year.
Azubuike was apprehended late Tuesday night outside a condominium in Bangkok’s Yannawa district during a law enforcement operation codenamed “Clipping the Wings of the Dodorima Boss.”
According to Thai police, the suspect allegedly attempted to evade arrest by reversing his vehicle into officers who were trying to block his escape route, resulting in injuries to several policemen. Officers reportedly responded by smashing the vehicle’s windows and disabling the engine before successfully taking him into custody.
Authorities said approximately 18 grammes of cocaine were recovered from the vehicle during the operation.
Azubuike has been charged with possession and sale of a Category 2 narcotic, as well as resisting arrest. Investigators disclosed that additional money laundering charges are being considered as the probe continues.
Police also seized assets valued at about 700,000 baht, including a vehicle, cash in Thai baht and U.S. dollars, bank deposits, and luxury items. The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has confirmed a lone accident involving an empty 40-foot articulated truck along Isheri Elemu inward Ijegun, where the driver lost his life.
The General Manager, Mr Olalekan Bakare-Oki, in a statement on Friday in Lagos added that the motor boy survived the incident.
Bakare-Oki said the driver was trapped beneath the overturned truck and died instantly from the impact, while the accompanying motor boy sustained multiple injuries and fractures.
“Preliminary findings indicate that the empty containerised vehicle suddenly lost stability while in motion and overturned, causing the devastating crash along the corridor.
“LASTMA rescue and recovery operatives swiftly mobilised to the scene, conducted coordinated intervention, extricated the deceased driver from the wreckage, and ensured safe evacuation of the injured motor boy promptly,” he said.
He said that personnel from the Isheri Osun Police Division provided security support during the exercise, maintained orderliness and facilitated seamless rescue and recovery.
Bakare-Oki expressed sorrow over the loss of life and extended condolences to the bereaved family, while wishing the injured motor boy speedy recovery.
He reiterated the agency’s commitment to road safety advocacy, emphasising routine mechanical inspections and proactive maintenance of heavy duty vehicles, especially articulated trucks operating across Lagos roads to prevent tragedies.
He urged operators, companies, and drivers to ensure vehicle roadworthiness and comply with safety regulations.

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has commended the Department of State Services (DSS) for the arrest of a suspected arms courier in Kano State, describing the operation as a significant breakthrough in efforts to combat banditry, terrorism and other violent crimes in northern Nigeria.
According to a statement issued on Friday by the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, the suspect, identified as 30-year-old Muhammad Abubakar, was apprehended in Gezawa Local Government Area while allegedly transporting a cache of weapons believed to be destined for criminal elements in Katsina State.
The DSS disclosed that the recovered items included four rocket-propelled grenade (RPG) tubes, three AK-47 rifles and two empty magazines. The weapons were reportedly being transported to Funtua in Katsina State.
Preliminary investigations indicated that the suspect allegedly collected the arms from an individual identified as Bello in the Maigatari border area of Jigawa State and was expected to receive N450,000 upon successful delivery.
Governor Yusuf praised the professionalism, vigilance and intelligence-driven approach of DSS operatives, noting that the timely interception of the weapons prevented them from falling into the hands of bandits and other criminal groups.

A former Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Fashola, has revealed that he did not receive security votes at any point during his eight years as governor of the state.
Fashola made the disclosure on Friday while speaking at a June 12 Democracy Day event organised by The Platform, where he participated in a panel discussion alongside former Senate President, Bukola Saraki.
During the session, the former governor responded to questions regarding the use and impact of security votes allocated to state governments, particularly in light of Nigeria’s persistent security challenges.

He maintained that throughout his tenure as Lagos governor, no security vote funds were paid to him personally.

Governor Hyacinth Alia has praised the House of Representatives for passing a bill to pave the way for the creation of state police.

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has announced its complete operational, technological, and logistical preparedness for the Ekiti State Governorship Election set for Saturday, 20 June 2026.
The Commission’s Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, SAN, is personally overseeing a final pre-election meeting with key stakeholders in Ado-Ekiti on Thursday, 11th June 2026.
Amupitan addressed the Ekiti State Governorship Election Stakeholders’ Forum nine days to the election, providing a detailed readiness profile and issuing direct responsibilities to political parties, security agencies, the media, and civil society to ensure a credible electoral process.
The INEC Chairman revealed that the Commission has completed a clean, legally verified Register of Voters, which now includes 1,059,360 registered citizens, an increase from the 2023 figure of 987,647, following the successful addition of 66,664 new registrants during Phases I and II of the Continuous Voter Registration, CVR, initiative. He also noted that the Automated Biometric Identification System, ABIS, has effectively invalidated 2,103 instances of double registration, thereby enhancing the integrity of the voter roll.
These voters will cast their votes across 16 Local Government Areas, 177 Registration Areas (Wards), and 2,445 Polling Units, with the Commission aiming for all polling units to be activated simultaneously at precisely 8:30 a.m. on Election Day.
Regarding the Commission’s technological infrastructure, Prof. Amupitan confirmed that the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System, BVAS, will be utilized in all 2,445 Polling Units as the exclusive tool for voter authentication and accreditation. Additionally, all results at the polling level will be transmitted directly to the INEC Result Viewing Portal, IReV, for real-time public verification.
“No PVC, No Accreditation, and No Voting,” the Chairman emphasized, adding: “There will be no bypasses, and there will be no exceptions.”
He additionally declared the implementation of assistive technologies, such as Braille ballot guides and magnifying glasses for individuals with albinism and those living with disabilities, emphasizing that equity in electoral access is “a necessity, not an afterthought.”
Regarding the Commission’s security framework, Prof. Amupitan revealed that INEC, in complete collaboration with the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES), had performed detailed threat mapping throughout the state, pinpointing localized vulnerabilities such as political thuggery and ballot disruption in specific areas. He stated that the EFCC and the ICPC had been engaged to protect all 2,445 Polling Units from the effects of vote-buying and financial inducement.
“We will safeguard the ballot box from both physical violence and fiscal contamination,” he asserted.
In reference to the Peace Accord signed by all 13 competing political parties on 21 May 2026, the Chairman praised party leadership for their public display of democratic civility but issued a stern warning that this gesture must be reflected in actual conduct on the ground.
“An accord holds value only as long as its signatories act in good faith,” Prof. Amupitan remarked. “The Peace Accord should not be regarded as a mere ceremonial formality. Its principles must be deeply internalized and strictly adhered to by your party officials, polling agents, and grassroots supporters.”
The INEC Chairman announced that the Commission had accredited 91 media organizations, deploying a total of 675 journalists from print, broadcast, and new media, along with 98 observer groups consisting of 96 domestic and two international organizations, to oversee every aspect of the electoral process throughout Ekiti State.
He urged members of the press to report with accuracy, fairness, and professional integrity, characterizing their role as constitutional rather than simply logistical.
To accredited observer groups, he charged them to deploy strictly in accordance with Commission guidelines, remain neutral in conduct and appearance throughout the process, and present findings with fidelity to fact, affirming INEC’s full co-operation with every accredited journalist and observer.
Amupitan also placed the Ekiti election within a wider national context, disclosing that the Commission would simultaneously conduct legislative bye-elections on 20 June 2026 across six states: Enugu North, Nasarawa North, Rivers South East, and Ondo South Senatorial Districts, Dawakin Kudu/Warawa Federal Constituency in Kano State, and Zuru State Constituency in Kebbi State.
“There is no dilution of institutional focus,” he assured stakeholders. “The exact same rigorous operational standards, technological safeguards, and stringent security arrangements deployed for the Ekiti Governorship Election will be uniformly applied across these concurrent bye-elections.”
The Resident Electoral Commissioner for Ekiti State, Dr. Bunmi Omoseyindemi, in his remarks, confirmed to the gathering that preparation had reached an advanced stage, with non-sensitive materials already received and being managed in accordance with established procedures. He said sensitive materials would be deployed by the following week, training of election personnel was ongoing, and logistics arrangements were being finalised. He noted that continuous engagement with security agencies, political parties, civil society organisations, traditional institutions, and the media was being sustained, adding that the Commission had met with the Ekiti State Council of Traditional Rulers earlier in the day.
The Commissioner of Police, Ekiti State, CP Michael Falade, assured the forum that the Nigeria Police Force and all security agencies were fully deployed and would remain professional and impartial in the protection of voters, candidates, and electoral officials throughout the process.
Ekiti State Chairman of the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), Hon. Adeniji Akinropo Philip, speaking on behalf of all political parties, called for peaceful conduct and constructive inclusivity, urging parties to see themselves as members of a common community rather than rivals in a winner-takes-all contest. He also called on INEC to ensure a level playing field for all participating parties.
Earlier in the day, ahead of the Stakeholders’ Forum, Prof. Amupitan had led a strategic consultative meeting with the Ekiti State Council of Traditional Rulers, where he presented the Commission’s full readiness profile and formally enlisted the moral and traditional authority of the royal fathers in the cause of peaceful electoral conduct across Ekiti communities.
At that engagement, the Chairman disclosed findings from the Commission’s empirical risk mapping, identifying specific local government areas carrying elevated security concerns. Ado-Ekiti, Effon, Ekiti South West, Ikere, Irepodun/Ifelodun, and Oye were flagged as vulnerable to political thuggery, cultism, and attempted ballot disruption, while Emure, Ikole, Ilejemeje, and Moba were marked for heightened security vigilance due to asymmetric threats including kidnapping. He disclosed that 469 polling units had been identified within a critical 500-metre radius of these risk locations, with synchronised inter-agency deployments planned to provide robust protection.
The Chairman called on the royal fathers to use their traditional authority to summon candidates and political actors within their respective domains and remind them that the Peace Accord signed on 21 May 2026 must be respected in every village and ward. He also appealed to the Council to deploy traditional town criers, ward chiefs, and community channels to mobilise subjects for PVC collection and early turnout by 8:30 a.m. on Election Day.
On the menace of vote-buying, Prof. Amupitan appealed directly to the traditional rulers to deploy their platforms against what he described as an ethical contamination of the democratic process.
“The Fountain of Knowledge must lead the nation in demonstrating that electoral choices cannot be purchased,” he told the royal assembly.
He gave the Council his personal assurance that INEC has no candidate in the election, reiterating that the Commission’s only allegiance is to the Constitution, the Electoral Act, and the sovereign will of the Ekiti people.]]>
The governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Bauchi State, Adamu Usman Ahmed, has expressed confidence that the opposition will win the next governorship election and prevent Governor Bala Mohammed from handing power to a preferred successor.
Speaking with journalists in Abuja, Ahmed said Bauchi voters have a history of making independent political choices and are unlikely to support any attempt to impose a new governor.
“The people of Bauchi are always wise,” he said.
“Looking at the history of the state, no governor has successfully installed a successor. That is why I believe the opposition has a strong chance of winning.”
Governor Bala Mohammed, who previously chaired the PDP Governors’ Forum, recently left the PDP for the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) after divisions emerged within the party.
Ahmed said the political environment ahead of the election is different from previous contests because more parties are participating.
“The dynamics of politics have changed,” he said. “Unlike the past when elections were mainly between two parties, this time there are about seven or eight parties contesting. Having many candidates in the race gives us an advantage.”
The PDP candidate also pledged to focus on reducing unemployment if elected governor.
According to him, creating jobs would be the top priority of his administration.

Police operatives have arrested a 32-year-old security guard identified as Abraham Aneka over allegations of defilement, criminal intimidation, and attempted robbery involving a 16-year-old girl in the Abule-Ijoko area of Ogun State.
Oluseyi Babaseyi, the spokesperson for Ogun Police Command said in a statement on Friday that a single-barrel locally made firearm allegedly used to threaten the victim was also recovered from the victim.
According to the statement, the incident was reported at Agbado Division in the early hours of June 10, 2026, by a family member of the victim, who alleged that on the night of June 9, 2026, the teenage girl was on her way home when she was accosted by the suspect.
The suspect, armed with a locally made single-barrel gun, allegedly threatened her before forcibly taking her to his residence at Abule-Ijoko.
The spokesperson said upon receipt of the complaint, detectives of Agbado Division immediately launched a coordinated response. The suspect was promptly tracked, arrested, and the firearm allegedly used in the commission of the crime was recovered. The scene of the incident was also visited as part of ongoing investigative procedures.
Babaseyi said preliminary investigation revealed that the security guard allegedly had unlawful carnal knowledge of the minor without her consent and further attempted to dispossess her of her belongings.
He said the victim was thereafter issued a medical form and taken to a hospital for medical examination and treatment.
Babaseyi said the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Eleweran, Abeokuta, for discreet and comprehensive investigation, while the suspect remains in custody pending the conclusion of investigation and subsequent prosecution.
“The Commissioner of Police, Ogun State Command, CP Bode Ojajuni, psc, FCSS, MNIPR, reiterates the Command’s zero tolerance for segxwal and gender-based violence, especially offences against minors. A fire outbreak has destroyed shops and office spaces along Murtala Mohammed Way, near FCMB Bank in Fagge Local Government Area of Kano State, leaving several properties damaged.
This was contained in a statement signed by ACFO Saminu Yusif Abdullahi, Public Relations Officer, Kano State Fire Service on Friday.
According to the statement, the incident occurred on Thursday night around 10:54 p.m.
The service said its Emergency Response Unit received a distress call from one of its staff, HFS Ibrahim Sabo, who reported the fire outbreak.
Firefighters from the headquarters and other stations were immediately deployed to the scene to contain the blaze.
“On arrival, they found a one-storey building and an adjoining open commercial area measuring about 300 by 200 feet already engulfed in flames.
The fire was said to have started from the salvage yard, also known as Takumbo Market, before spreading to nearby buildings.
“The fire started from the salvage yard area and later spread to the upper floor of the Kanawa Building,” the Fire Service said.
According to the statement, the fire destroyed two offices, two parlours, two toilets and one kitchen in the Kanawa Building.
“It also affected two shops on the ground floor of TUSRAYS Nigeria Limited.”
The Fire Service said preliminary findings suggest that the fire was caused by an electrical spark.
Director of the Kano State Fire Service, Alhaji Sani Anas, advised residents to take safety precautions to prevent similar incidents.
He also urged the public to quickly report any fire outbreak to the nearest fire station to enable rapid response and reduce damage.]]>
Troops of Joint Task Force North East, Operation HADIN KAI have arrested suspected kidnappers and recovered AK-47 rifles and ammunition in Borno.
In a statement on its platform on Friday (Whatsapp), it said troops while acting on credible intelligence, conducted a well-coordinated operation along a known criminal corridor in Magumeri, leading to the arrest of 5 suspected members of a kidnapping syndicate responsible for terrorising innocent civilians within the area.
The troops also recovered two AK-47 rifles, magazines and ammunition, adding that following investigations, the suspects were linked to kidnapping and other criminal activities in Borno State.

A 35-year-old woman, identified as Osasere, has been arrested by the Edo State Police Command for allegedly throwing her five-year-old son into River Ovia in Ovia North-East Local Government Area of the state.
According to reports, the tragic incident occurred after the woman allegedly acted on advice from a self-proclaimed seer who convinced her that the child was responsible for her repeated miscarriages.
Local fishermen in the area reportedly apprehended Osasere shortly after the incident and shielded her from an angry mob that attempted to attack her. The fishermen also launched an immediate search operation using canoes in an effort to locate the missing child.
In a video circulating on social media, the suspect claimed she became worried because her son had not started walking despite being five years old. She further alleged that after giving birth to him, she suffered multiple miscarriages.
Osasere stated that a friend introduced her to a seer who allegedly told her that the boy was a “python spirit” responsible for her inability to carry subsequent pregnancies to term. According to her, the seer advised her to throw the child into the river if she wanted to conceive again.
Confirming the incident, the spokesperson of the Edo State Police Command, Eno Ikoedem, said the suspect was arrested on the same day and remains in police custody while investigations continue.

Troops of Operation Enduring Peace have confirmed the discovery of the corpse of a man with multiple machete wounds on the outskirts of Torok community in Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State.
Security sources said troops of Sector 6 Operation Enduring Peace responded to a report of the discovery on Thursday, June 11, 2026 and proceeded to the scene for verification.
The deceased was identified as Mr. Toma Chuwang , a resident of Torok village.
Preliminary findings indicated that the victim was allegedly attacked by yet-to-be-identified assailants suspected to be Fulani militiad while returning from a mining site in the area.
A security source disclosed that the corpse showed signs of decomposition, suggesting that the victim may have died several days before it was discovered.
“Upon arrival at the location, troops confirmed the corpse of Mr. Toma Chuwang with machete cuts on the body. The condition of the corpse indicates that it had already started decomposing,“said the sources.
The remains were evacuated from the scene while security agencies commenced an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the killing and identify those responsible.
The source added that efforts were ongoing to gather further information that could assist in unraveling the incident and bringing the perpetrators to justice.

The Edo government has approved the reopening of schools in Akoko-Edo LGA, recently shut over security concerns, after intelligence reports indicated a plan to attack schools in the area.
The approval is contained in a circular issued by the permanent secretary of the Ministry of Education, Mr. Enodolomwanyi Otamere, and obtained by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Benin on Friday.
According to Otamere, the decision to reopen the schools was taken after a comprehensive review of the security situation by relevant security agencies and other stakeholders.
He said that the government was satisfied that adequate measures had been put in place to guarantee the safety of students, teachers, and other school personnel.
“Following the implementation of enhanced security measures and the deployment of additional safety mechanisms across the affected communities and schools, the government is satisfied that necessary arrangements have been put in place to ensure the safety and wellbeing of learners, teachers, and other school personnel.
“All public and private schools affected by the earlier circular are to resume normal academic and administrative activities, with effect from Monday, June 15, 2026,” he added.
The permanent secretary directed schoolheads, proprietors, and relevant education authorities to make the necessary arrangements for the safe return of students and members of staff.
He also urged them to maintain close collaboration with security agencies, community leaders, and government officials to sustain a safe and conducive learning environment.
He reassured parents, guardians, and other stakeholders that adequate security measures had been deployed across the affected schools.
“The government remains fully committed to the protection of lives and property and will continue to monitor developments closely while taking all necessary steps to safeguard the education sector,” he stated.
Otamere encouraged parents and guardians to ensure that their children and wards returned to school promptly to continue their academic activities.
NAN reports that the state government ordered the temporary closure of Ososo Grammar School, Ososo Comprehensive High School, and Makeke Secondary School, following security alerts from relevant agencies in the state.
The closure was linked to credible intelligence reports warning of imminent threats to the safety of students, staff, and host communities.
The development also followed a security memo by the Department of State Services, which reportedly raised concerns over an alleged plot by suspected bandits to abduct schoolchildren in parts of Edo North Senatorial District.
The intelligence report indicated that security operatives intercepted communications suggesting plans to target students, while a suspect was reportedly apprehended during surveillance activities around Makeke Secondary School.
Government subsequently suspended academic activities in the affected schools as a precautionary measure, while candidates participating in the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) had to sit for their examinations under special security arrangements.

An Akwa Ibom State High Court in Uyo has sentenced Apostle Williams Okon Bassey of Mount Zion Lighthouse Full Gospel Church to 49 years imprisonment after finding him guilty of repeatedly segxwally abusing and impregnating his daughter.
Justice Bassey delivered the judgment on June 10, 2026. The pastor was arrested in November 2019 following allegations of incest and rape.
According to the victim, the abuse began when she was about 13 years old and continued over a period of time, resulting in three pregnancies. She alleged that her father often demanded sex before providing money for her education and other personal needs.

Troops of the Nigerian Army have arrested a man in Kaduna State for allegedly posing as a retired Major General, military sources have confirmed.
The suspect was apprehended on Wednesday by personnel of the 312 Artillery Regiment deployed at the Strike Force Base in the Sabo area of Kaduna following credible intelligence reports.
According to sources, the troops tracked and arrested the suspect at about 9:14 a.m. over allegations that he had been impersonating retired Major General A.T. Ibrahim.
A military source disclosed that the suspect was immediately taken into custody for questioning and preliminary investigation.
“The individual was arrested for allegedly impersonating Maj.-Gen. A.T. Ibrahim (rtd) and is currently in military custody undergoing preliminary investigation,” the source said.
Security sources revealed that the suspect remains in military custody as investigations continue to uncover the circumstances surrounding the alleged impersonation.
The authorities are yet to disclose the motive behind the suspect’s actions or whether he used the purported false identity to commit other offences.
Military officials indicated that after preliminary procedures are concluded, the suspect is expected to be handed over to the appropriate authorities for further investigation and possible prosecution.
Investigators are also working to determine whether other individuals were involved in the alleged scheme as efforts continue to unravel the full details of the case.]]>

The first batch of Nigerians to be repatriated from South Africa over the latest xenophobic violence have arrived in Lagos.
The group, comprising 268 Nigerians, touched down at 10.30am at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport on Thursday, via Air Peace airlines.
The return flight was initially scheduled for Monday but was later moved to Wednesday over documentation delays.
Over 1,000 Nigerians are said to have expressed interest in returning home.
On Monday, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, minister of foreign affairs, said the “numbers keep increasing” after Nigeria’s high commission in Pretoria said it had “negotiated waivers with host authorities” so that those with “immigration-related offences” would be allowed to leave on the eventual repatriation flights rather than be detained.
Screening for interested nationals began last Thursday and was set to conclude on Saturday.
But in a statement on Wednesday, the ministry of foreign affairs said the screening exercise had been extended to Sunday “to accommodate more persons”.
“This underscores the priority accorded to the protection of Nigerian citizens overseas, which remains a central pillar of Nigeria’s foreign policy and a core responsibility of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs,” the statement reads.

An Akwa Ibom State High Court sitting in Uyo has sentenced 50-year-old Ime Edet Akpan to 21 years imprisonment for a§§aulting and impregnating a 14-year-old girl.
The convict, a married tricycle (keke) operator and father of five, was sentenced on Thursday, June 11, 2026.
According to details shared by judiciary reporter Harrison Essien, the incident occurred in Nung Udoe, Ibesikpo Asutan Local Government Area, at the residence of Akpan’s mistress. Akpan had gone to visit his partner, but upon finding her away, he targeted the teenage neighbor while she was bathing.
During the court proceedings, Akpan admitted to the act, stating,
“I held her and had unlawful c@rnal knowledge of her and there was nobody in the compound, now that she is pregnant, I will take care of her until she put to bed.”
The court rejected his defense, handing down a 21-year prison sentence to the Uyo Local Government Area native.

The duo performed at the opening ceremony of the tournament on Thursday at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City on Thursday.

A South African politician has sparked outrage after labeling Nigerians "horrible" people and celebrating their forced departure from the country amid escalating xenophobic violence.
Thabile Sibeko, leader of the Inizwe Nathi Party, made the controversial remarks at the airport shortly before a group of Nigerians boarded an evacuation flight. Sibeko told journalists she attended the airport specifically to witness the departure, subsequently accusing Nigerian nationals of introducing drug abuse to South African youth.

President Bola Tinubu has warned bandits, kidnappers and sponsors of terror to surrender or face the full force of the Nigerian State.
Tinubu gave the warning in a nationwide broadcast marking 27 years of unbroken democracy.
The president said the windows of surrender will not remain open forever, noting that terror-related deaths have dropped by 81% since 2015, while over 13,000 terrorists were neutralized in the past year.

Democracy must be felt in the quality of people’s lives—in opportunities for youth, in prosperous farmers, successful entrepreneurs, and the dignity of our workers.
The reforms we are undertaking were not chosen for ease, but for necessity. Three years ago, our public finances were under severe strain, investment was discouraged, and economic uncertainty threatened our future. We chose to act, embracing reforms to advance Nigeria’s economic freedom.
Since 2023, our reforms have restored stability and credibility to economic management. Federation revenues have risen, providing states and local governments with more resources for infrastructure, education, healthcare, and security. Fiscal transparency has improved, leakage has been reduced, and public funds are better directed to national priorities. Investor confidence has returned, with investments in agriculture, energy, manufacturing, technology, mining, transportation, and the creative industries growing.
Domestic refining capacity has increased, strengthening energy security and reducing our reliance on imported petroleum products.
By 2023, when we came on board, the electricity sector was characterised by chronic generation shortfalls, an unreliable gas supply, and transmission infrastructure so fragile that it could not evacuate available power. Distribution companies were burdened by massive losses and a metering deficit of over four million. Worst of all, the value chain was drowning in legacy debt. The result was a sector that generated less than the 13,500 Megawatts installed capacity, a sector that transmitted less than it generated, distributed less than it transmitted and collected revenue far below what it needed to sustain itself.
To address the problems besetting the sector, I signed the Electricity Act, which grants states authority to generate, transmit, and distribute power. The Presidential Power Sector Task Force is working hard to reduce the metering deficit. It has also been authorised to raise N4 trillion bond to settle verified legacy debts. The Rural Electrification Agency, supported by the World Bank and the African Development Bank, has deployed off-grid and mini-grid power to underserved communities, universities, markets, and hospitals. Electricity is a democratic dividend we owe every Nigerian. We intend to deliver it.
Across the country, infrastructure projects are connecting producers to markets and creating opportunities for enterprise and employment. The National Agricultural Development Fund is deploying 10,000 tractors over five years. Over 1,000 SMEs have been certified for export. Non-oil exports grew by 21% last year.
Yet, many Nigerians still face economic hardship. We remain focused on reducing inflation, expanding food production, creating jobs, improving living standards, rebuilding confidence in our economy, and creating conditions for sustainable prosperity.
We are moving from uncertainty to stability. The next phase is about accelerating growth and ensuring the benefits are felt in every home, every community, and every region. We believe that Democracy must be felt in the pocket.
Recognising that democracy is undermined when people do not feel its impact, my administration has sought financial autonomy for our 774 local councils. A fundamental challenge to our nation’s advancement has been ineffective local government administration. The insecurity we are addressing is partly due to the collapse of grassroots governance. The Renewed Hope Agenda is about ensuring that all Nigerians benefit from governance.
Every generation has a defining responsibility. The generation of our founding fathers secured independence—the generation of June 12 secured democracy. Our generation must secure prosperity.
Let us move forward together—rejecting division, cynicism, and despair; embracing unity, hope, and confidence. Let us build a Nigeria united by a common purpose, strengthened by diversity, where justice is accessible, liberty is secure, and opportunity is abundant.

Gunmen suspected to be Fulani militias, on Thursday, attacked a group of mourners who were conveying the bodies of two persons killed in an earlier attack, to the mortuary in Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State, killing one person and injuring several others.
The President of the Berom Youth Moulders-Association, BYM, Barr. Dalyop Solomon Mwantiri, who confirmed the incident in a statement on Friday morning, said on Wednesday night, some Fulani bandits had launched an attack on the Sol village of Ta-Hoss District in Riyom LGA, killing two people.
However, the bandits ambushed the grieving mourners the following day while conveying the bodies of the victims to a mortuary, opened fire on them and killed one other person while injuring others in the process.
Mwantiri, who condemned the renewed wave of terrorist attacks in Riyom and other parts of the state, called on security agencies to intensify ongoing operations through a comprehensive crackdown on armed criminal gangs terrorizing innocent communities.
“This call follows the gruesome killing of two Berom youths by suspected armed Fulani terrorist gangs who invaded Sol village in the Ta-Hoss community of Riyom LGA at about 9:20 p.m. on June 10, 2026,” Mwantiri said.
He revealed the names of the victims as Davou Dalyop Patu and Dalyop Zaram, who were mowed down in the earlier attack.
Continuing, the BYM President said:
“These productive members of the community were brutally murdered, plunging the entire Ta-Hoss community and surrounding villages into deep mourning.
“Reports indicate that after carrying out the attack, the assailants retreated to a nearby Fulani settlement suspected to serve as a hideout for armed bandits in Kwakwi, Ganawuri District of Riyom LGA.”
He added that on Thursday morning, while the remains of the two victims were being taken to the Riyom General Hospital to be deposited in the mortuary, the bandits again attacked the mourners in an ambush and opened fire on them, killing one man identified as Toma Chuwang, while some others sustained several degrees of injuries.
“The Association has also received credible reports suggesting that criminal elements responsible for attacks in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area may have redirected their operations toward vulnerable communities in Riyom LGA due to the ongoing security crackdown being conducted by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) and other security agencies in Barkin Ladi and its environs,” Mwantiri went on.
“In a related development, BYM condemns the continued destruction of farmlands through indiscriminate grazing in the Gassa/Kassa communities of Ropp District, Barkin Ladi LGA. Such actions threaten the livelihoods of local farmers and further compound the insecurity and economic hardship faced by residents.
“Consequently, BYM calls on the Federal Government, Plateau State Government, and all security agencies to establish and strengthen additional security formations in Riyom LGA to complement ongoing operations and prevent the area from becoming a safe haven for terrorist and criminal elements.
“The Association also appeals to the international community and Nigeria’s development and security partners to support efforts aimed at combating terrorism, banditry, and violent extremism in Plateau State, the Middle Belt region, and Nigeria as a whole.
“Furthermore, BYM urges residents of vulnerable communities in Riyom LGA, Gyel District of Jos South LGA, and other affected areas to remain vigilant and prioritize community security. Citizens should continue to provide timely and credible intelligence to security agencies, including Operation Enduring Peace and other relevant security formations, to enable proactive responses to emerging threats,” he added. ]]>
The Nigerian Navy has recorded another significant breakthrough in its ongoing operations against militancy and criminality within the Calabar waterways with the handover of a suspected militant collaborator to the Department of State Services, DSS, Calabar Command.
A statement signed by Captain Abiodun Folorunsho, Director, Naval Information, said that the suspect, identified as Mr Ubong Clement, was arrested by personnel of Nigerian Navy Ship, NNS, Victory deployed at the Forward Security Outpost on Dayspring Island, Akpabuyo Local Government Area of Cross River State.
It said the arrest forms part of sustained intelligence-driven operations aimed at dismantling criminal networks and their support structures within the area.
It said that preliminary investigations established that the suspect allegedly maintained regular contact with members of militant groups operating within the Dayspring Island axis and was involved in activities that compromised ongoing security operations. Intelligence further linked the suspect to a notorious militant identified as Steven Joseph, alias “Juju,” who has been associated with criminal activities within the waterways.
The statement said that further findings revealed that the suspect allegedly acted as a conduit for the disposal of goods stolen from market boats intercepted by militants operating in the area. Investigations indicated that proceeds from the sale of such items were remitted to the militant network, thereby providing financial and logistical support for their operations.
Following the conclusion of preliminary investigations, the navy said that the suspect was handed over to the Department of State Services for further investigation and possible prosecution in accordance with extant laws.
It added, “The handover underscores the Nigerian Navy’s determination to not only target criminal elements directly involved in militancy but also dismantle the support networks that sustain their activities.
“By disrupting these local facilitators, security forces continue to degrade the operational capability of criminal groups operating within the maritime environment.”
The Nigerian Navy said it remained committed to sustaining intelligence-led operations, community engagement, and targeted security actions to ensure lasting peace and security within the Calabar waterways and adjoining communities.]]>
The Federal High Court in Abuja on Thursday convicted and sentenced five men, including a Nigerien citizen to 25-years’ imprisonment each for terrorism offences.
Justice Binta Nyako handed down the judgment after the convicts pleaded guilty to the four-count charge preferred against them by the Department of State Services (DSS).
The convicts are Yusuf Mohammed (aka Bature), Goni Ibrahim Bindi (aka Goni Mutuwa), Sani Tulur (aka Danladi), Mubarak Ibrahim and Musa Alhaji Adamu (aka Gado Banufe).
After their guilty plea, the prosecution sought to tender items recovered from the defendants.
With the court’s permission, the prosecution tendered a forwarding letter, accompanied with the investigation report and the statements of the defendants.
The prosecution also tendered 15 units of AK 103 rifles complete with its magazines and 1434 rounds of 7.62mm live ammunition, to which the defence raised no objection.
Justice Nyako admitted the items as exhibits and proceeded to convict the defendants.
The judge then asked the defendants to make a plea of allocutus each, which they did.
The prosecution, therefore, applied that a Volkswagen car, used in transporting arms and ammunition, be forfeited to the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
In her judgment, Justice Nyako found the defendants guilty as charged and convicted them.
She sentenced them to 25 years each on count one.
On counts two and three, she sentenced the 3rd, 4th and 5th defendants to seven years jail term each while, on count four, only the 1st defendant bagged 25 years imprisonment.
The judge ordered that the sentences shall run concurrently, beginning from the date of their arrest.
She ordered that the convicts should serve their terms of improvement in a place designated by the Minister of Interior.
Justice Nyako equally ordered that the exhibits recovered from them be forfeited to the Federal Government.
In count one, the convicts between April 23 and April 24 were alleged to have committed the offence.
They were alleged to have jointly conspired “to render assistance to a terrorist by agreeing and intentionally playing various roles towards conveying 15 AK 103 rifles as well as about 1,434 rounds of 7.62mm live ammunition from Diffa region, Republic of Niger, to one Malam Ahmad.”
Ahmad is said to be a member of the Boko Haram terrorist group based in Borgu LGA of Niger State.
The offence is contrary to Section 26(1) of the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022, among other counts.]]>

The Sokoto State Hisbah Board has arrested 26 men and women during a coordinated enforcement operation across several parts of the state capital under its ongoing “Operation Tsaftace Birnin Shehu” initiative.
The arrests were announced in a statement issued by the board on Thursday.
According to the statement, the operation was led by the Commander-General of the Sokoto State Hisbah Board, Malam Usman Abdullahi Jatau, alongside the Director of Da’awah, Imam Sirajo Abubakar.
Officials carried out the raid in Nakasari, Hubbare, Offer Road, the Sokoto Central Motor Park, and Giginya Hotel, where 26 male and female suspects were apprehended.
The board described the exercise as part of its sustained efforts to sanitise the city through the “Operation Tsaftace Birnin Shehu” campaign, which targets activities considered contrary to the state’s moral and social values.

Operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) and troops of the Nigerian Army on Wednesday foiled a major attempt by members of the outlawed Eastern Security Network (ESN) to kidn@p scores of students writing the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination in some Southeast states.
The targeted schools were located in Enugu, Anambra and Imo states.
According to a statement released on Thursday by the DSS, operatives and soldiers acted on credible intelligence and raided an ESN armoury in the Agbani axis of Enugu State.
Intelligence revealed that ESN members planned to launch the att@cks while wearing National Youth Service Corps uniforms.
"The raid led to the recovery of a cache of high-calibre arms, including eight AK-47 rifles, 12 AK-47 magazines and 323 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition.
Also recovered were one smoke grenade launcher, two teargas canisters, 10 NYSC trousers, eight NYSC T-shirts and four NYSC lanyards.
"Intelligence further revealed that members of the terrorist organisation were to att@ck selected schools in the Southeast region to create the impression that b@ndits had invaded the region. Several members of the organisation were reportedly arrested," the statement partly read.
It added that on Tuesday, a team comprising DSS operatives and soldiers raided another ESN armoury around the Garki area of Enugu, recovering a rocket launcher, two rocket-propelled grenade warheads, three RPG chargers and three AK-47 rifles, among other items.
"Also recovered were six AK-47 magazines, two handheld grenades, one teargas gun, a baton, two teargas canisters, 270 rounds of NATO 7.62x39mm ammunition, 478 rounds of 7.62x39mm special ammunition, a bandolier and a baton," the statement added.
The recoveries came barely a week after DSS operatives arrested five suspected arms couriers linked to gunmen who abducted students and staff of St. Mary's Catholic School in Papiri Village, Niger State, on November 21, 2025.

A community-led rescue effort by youths in Ugbokolo, Okpokwu Local Government Area of Benue State, reportedly led to the rescue of several kidn@pped victims and the arrest of three suspected kidn@ppers.
According to local sources, the victims were abducted on Tuesday along the Ugbokolo–Aokpe Road, a route frequently used by residents and travellers within the area.
Following news of the incident, youths from the community reportedly mobilised and launched a search operation aimed at locating the victims and their captors.
The effort resulted in the successful rescue of the abducted persons and the apprehension of three individuals suspected of involvement in the crime.
One relative of a victim alleged that the suspects were of Fulani origin. The identities of the rescued victims and arrested suspects were not immediately disclosed.

More Nigerian filling stations have significantly reduced their premium motor spirit pump price to remain competitive and woo patronage.
A market survey on Thursday showed that filling stations, including Emedab, Rainoil, Empire Energy, Total, and AA Rano, have dropped their price to between N1,330 and N1350 per litre from above N1,360 per litre in Abuja and its environs.
This means that the above filling stations increased their petrol price by between N10 and N30 per litre.
Recall that MRS, Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, NIPCO stations, retail outlets and other filling stations had adjusted downward to N1,317 to N1,335 per litre last week.
The petrol price reduction comes weeks after the Dangote Refinery had slashed its gantry petrol price, which later forced retail prices down.
Speaking on the development, the spokesperson of the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria, Chinedu Ukadike, said the price of the commodity would continue to fluctuate as the Iran-United States-Israel over-three-month-old crisis in the Middle East persists.

Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate Peter Obi has said it makes no difference whether President Bola Tinubu has the support of all 36 governors ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking during a recent interview in Washington DC, Obi noted that he had no governor backing him in the 2023 presidential election, yet still won in 12 states.
"For the 2027 election, it doesn't matter if all 36 governors are with President Tinubu. I didn't have a single governor in the last election, yet I won 12 states, even after they stole two states from me.
"By making Abuja a state, we now have 37 states because that's what the judgment of the Supreme Court showed. Senator Rabi'u Kwankwaso won one state, and that was Kano.
The APC, PDP and Labour Party won 12 states each. And if I lost two by the process of rigging, I would have had 14 states," he said.

The Idumebo Security Network in Esan Central of Edo state have arrested a Benue woman identified as Charity Jacob, and her husband, John, for plotting to sell off her sister's child for N3 million..
In a video making the rounds on social media, members of the community security network said they received an intel that a couple was about to sell a baby to an intending buyer. Acting on the intelligence, they immediately stormed the place where the negotiation was taking place and apprehended the suspects.
The security agents say the suspects were negotiating to sell the baby for N3 million.
When interrogated, Charity confirmed that the baby she was planning to sell belonged to her sister who had no idea she was scheming to sell her child.

An Improvised Explosive Device (IED) explosion has k!lled ten people and injured seven others along the Bagega-Anka route in Anka Local Government Area of Zamfara State.
According to reports, the incident occurred at 6:15 p.m. on Monday when a commercial Volkswagen Golf 3 Wagon transporting passengers from Bagega to Anka collided with an explosive device allegedly set by suspected bandits in the vicinity.
Spokesperson of the Zamfara State Police Command, Yazid Abubakar, who confirmed the incident on Wednesday, June 11, 2026 said that one fatality and seven injuries were initially recorded in the explosion.
He said the command, following reports of the blast, deployed specialised tactical teams to the scene for an on-the-spot assessment.
Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency publication, disclosed that the command said nine additional bodies were recovered from the scene by the police tactical team during ongoing search and recovery efforts.
The explosion reportedly occurred between Tungar Kudaku and Bagega communities along the road, prompting an immediate response from security operatives.
"Following the deployment of security personnel to the affected area, an extensive assessment was carried out, leading to the recovery of nine additional bodies from the scene of the explosion,” Zagazola quoted a police source as saying.
The recovered bodies were reportedly evacuated to a hospital for autopsy and other necessary procedures before being released to their families for burial in accordance with Islamic rites.
Police authorities said security measures had been strengthened along the Anka–Bagega corridor to prevent further incidents and reassure road users.
They added that visibility patrols had been intensified along the route as part of efforts to enhance security and deter criminal activities.
The authorities urged residents to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious movements or objects to security agencies.
They also assured the public of the command’s commitment to maintaining security and safeguarding lives and property across the state.
Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the explosion are said to be ongoing.
Among the dead are Abban Bagega, a fresh graduate of Federal University Gusau, his father, Alhaji Salisu Bagega, and his younger brother.

A privately operated aircraft reportedly landed on a roadway at Ogwashi-Uku, Delta State, on Wednesday, June 10, causing a stir among residents in the area.
The aircraft, a Bombardier Challenger 601 business jet, landed on a road still under construction after a failed approach to Asaba International Airport.
According to the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority, the aircraft conducted a missed approach at about 7:43 a.m. local time before reportedly landing on a roadway in the Ogwashi-Uku area near Asaba.
The regulator said preliminary findings showed that the aircraft later departed the location and flew back to Lagos without obtaining the required regulatory clearance.
Upon arrival in Lagos, the aircraft was immediately grounded pending the outcome of the investigation, while the flight crew were placed under regulatory review.
The NCAA also announced the suspension of the operator's Permit for Non-Commercial Flight pending further inquiries.
Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has reacted to the incident.
Via his verified X handle, Keyamo said the aircraft returned to Lagos without obtaining the requisite regulatory approval and the pilot did not notify the Air Traffic Control before take-off but did so after the aircraft had become airborne.
The Minister explained the actions taken by the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) because of the breach and said that upon the arrival of the aircraft in Lagos, the Authority immediately grounded the aircraft pending the outcome of its investigation.
He said the NCAA will also review all operational, airworthiness, maintenance, and flight-related records as part of its statutory responsibilities and will take further enforcement action in accordance with applicable aviation regulations.
Keyamo said he has also spoken to relevant security agencies and “I have been assured that the crew are in their custody and they are assisting them with their investigation.”

The Ekiti State police command has detained four Pakistani nationals following reports of their suspicious presence in Iyin-Ekiti, located in the Irepodun/Ifelodun Local Government Area.
According to Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency publication, the suspects were arrested after residents raised concerns about unfamiliar individuals in the community, which sparked tension among locals. Citing sources, Makama reported that a distress call was received by the Iyin-Ekiti police division on June 9, prompting officers to mobilise to the area immediately.
"Upon arrival at the scene, police operatives intercepted and arrested four men identified as Muhammad Yusuf, 47; Ghani Abdul, 36; Abdul Jabbar, 46; and Yusuf Muhammad, 47," Makama said.
"The suspects reportedly told investigators that they were nationals of Pakistan who had travelled to Nigeria to sell mobile phones and engage in sightseeing activities. However, police sources said the men were unable to provide satisfactory explanations or documentation regarding their activities and presence in the community at the time of their arrest."
The publication said the four men were taken into custody for further questioning and verification of their identities and intentions. Makama reported that police authorities said investigations are ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding the suspects' presence in the area and to determine whether any laws have been violated.
"The command urged residents to remain calm and continue to cooperate with security agencies by reporting suspicious movements and activities," Makama said. "It also reassured the public that all necessary steps were being taken to ensure the safety and security of communities across the state."]]>
Nigerian singer Ruger's record label has explained why the artist has been absent from the music scene.
In a statement, the label disclosed that the "Bounce" singer has been away due to a legal dispute with an ex-girlfriend. According to the statement, the former partner sued Ruger for alleged "emotional distress" and "damages."

There was pandemonium at the Legislative Council Complex in Ini Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State on Thursday as thugs invaded the chambers, disrupting an ongoing sitting of the councillors.
Some of the lawmakers sustained injuries while scampering for safety. A female councillor, Ekomobong Isaac, was seen bleeding before she was evacuated to the hospital.
Journalists who came to cover the plenary were not spared as one of them, Emmanuel Ufon, was assaulted and his cameras confiscated.
Speaking after the incident, the Leader of the 8th Ini Legislative Council, Donald Usoroh, described the attack as unwarranted, alleging that it was sponsored by the Council Chairman, Inibehe Umah.
Usoroh recalled that trouble started when the legislators wrote to the chairman, inviting him to give account of the council’s monthly income and expenditure, in order to ensure accountability and good governance.
He said rather than the chairman responding to the request, he resorted to intimidation and violence by allegedly sending thugs to disrupt the scheduled plenary.
Usoroh maintained that the legislators were not even planning to impeach the chairman as they know the due protocols to follow if they want to do such but only wanted him to give account of huge funds he had collected from Governor Umo Eno for the development of the local government.
He, therefore, urged Governor Eno, the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio and other stakeholders to wade into the matter to forestall a full blown crisis in Ini LGA even as he reaffirmed their commitments to serving the people with courage, integrity and dedication to democratic principles.
Usoroh said, “We were not holding a sitting to impeach the chairman. The order paper and agenda for the sitting had already been prepared, and no item relating to impeachment was included.
“In the discharge of our constitutional duties, we had earlier requested a transparent account of the council’s monthly income and expenditure. This was a legitimate legislative responsibility aimed at ensuring accountability and good governance.
“This shameful act of aggression not only undermined democracy at the grassroots but also inflicted devastating consequences. Tragically, one of our female colleagues lost her two-month pregnancy as a direct result of the assault. This heartbreaking incident has left the Council and the community deeply shaken.”
Speaking on behalf of the journalists attacked during the incident, Comrade Ufon said he had been invited to cover the legislative beat which he normally covered and was carrying out his professional duties when the violence occurred.
Ufon alleged that individuals he described as “suspected terrorists and hoodlums” stormed the legislative chambers, destroyed his tripod, assaulted him and his cameraman, and seized their cameras.
According to him, the attackers claimed they were acting on the instructions of the council chairman and informed him that he would have to recover his equipment through them.
He said, “A free press depends on journalists being able to gather information, document events, and report news without intimidation, violence, or arbitrary interference. When journalists are physically attacked or their equipment is confiscated, several concerns should arise.”

The House of Representatives has approved the State Police Bill, marking a major step toward decentralising Nigeria’s policing system.
The bill secured overwhelming support during Thursday’s plenary, with 289 lawmakers voting in favour. The session was presided over by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas.
The lower chamber had dedicated Thursday’s sitting to deciding on the proposed legislation amid rising concerns over insecurity, including killings, kidnappings, and bandit attacks across the country.
Proceedings, however, witnessed a brief controversy when Bashir Zubairu, a lawmaker from Kaduna State, raised a point of order.
He argued that members had only received the report prepared by the House Committee on Constitution Review earlier in the day and had insufficient time to study it.
Addressing the chamber after being recognised by the Speaker, Zubairu stated, “Mr Speaker, this document was only made available to lawmakers in the chambers, and we are yet to go through it. We cannot do justice to it because we have not gone through it.”
Despite his objection, the Speaker ruled him out of order and directed that the process continue.
As Abbas proceeded to take lawmakers through the bill’s provisions, some members were heard shouting “Point of Order,” but the Speaker declined to entertain the interruptions.
Before voting commenced, Abbas informed members that the electronic voting system was not functioning, explaining that voting would instead be determined based on attendance records.
Of the 290 lawmakers present, 289 supported the establishment of state police, while only one member voted against the proposal.

The internal crisis in the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Katsina State has worsened after 34 House of Assembly aspirants defected to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The development comes just days after disputed primary elections split the ADC into rival groups, with different factions laying claim to the party’s governorship ticket ahead of the 2027 elections.
At the same time, reports indicate that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is making moves to bring former governorship aspirant Mustapha Inuwa back into its ranks.
According to the reports, top APC members have held separate meetings with Inuwa, a former Secretary to the Katsina State Government, as part of efforts to strengthen the party ahead of the next elections.
Inuwa, a founding member of the APC in Katsina, left the party after failing to secure its governorship ticket for the 2023 election. He later joined the PDP and served as campaign director for former Vice President Atiku Abubakar in Katsina before moving to the ADC.
The report also stated that APC officials first sent Jabiru Tsauri, a former chief of staff to the governor, to meet Inuwa. Later, the deputy governor, Lawal Jobe, reportedly held another closed-door meeting with him, although details were not made public.
Meanwhile, the ADC continues to grapple with internal disagreements following its governorship primary, with rival groups challenging the emergence of Ahmed Kaita as the party’s candidate. Some aspirants alleged that the process lacked transparency and did not comply with electoral guidelines.
The crisis has created uncertainty within the party’s structure in the state.
On Tuesday, 34 House of Assembly aspirants from 18 local government areas officially joined the PDP. They said their decision was based on injustice, poor leadership and a lack of internal democracy within the ADC.
Speaking on behalf of the group, Ahmad Yusuf Jaguma said they had lost confidence in the party’s leadership.
“We thought deeply, and we found that PDP is the solution. We left a disorganised journey and returned to our original home,” he said.
He added that many of them had expected PDP leader Senator Yakubu Lado Danmarke to also join the ADC but changed their minds when that did not happen.
Welcoming the defectors, Katsina PDP chairperson Nuraddeen Kurfi said the party remained united and open to new members.
“You will have a full opportunity and justice in PDP. This party is home for everyone,” he said.
PDP governorship candidate Yakubu Danmarke also welcomed the new members and said more politicians were expected to join the party in the coming weeks.]]>

Veteran journalist and former presidential aide, Reuben Abati, has urged Nigerians to support Mexico in its opening World Cup match against South Africa, citing ongoing concerns over xenophobic attacks on Nigerians living in the Southern African country.
Speaking on Arise Television’s Morning Show on Thursday, Abati referenced efforts by the Federal Government to evacuate Nigerians affected by xenophobic violence in South Africa.
According to him, the spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs had announced that arrangements had been concluded to bring back Nigerians who registered for evacuation, with an initial batch of 278 persons expected to return home.
Abati said the government had indicated that five batches of returnees would be assisted and rehabilitated, adding that more than 1,000 Nigerians had expressed willingness to return.
He argued that the situation underscored the need for improved living conditions in Nigeria, stating that citizens would be less inclined to seek opportunities abroad if essential services such as electricity, water supply and healthcare were adequately provided at home.
Turning to football, Abati said Nigerians should back Mexico in its World Cup opener against South Africa at the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City.
He jokingly suggested that supporting South Africa could invite further accusations that Nigerians were taking over opportunities meant for South Africans.
Abati said: “The spokesman for the ministry of foreign affairs has said that all the arrangements have been made for those Nigerians who have signed up to be brought back to their country from South Africa because of the xenophobic attack. First batch, 278 of them will be assisted, will be taken care of, rehabilitated by the Nigerian government.
“We have been promised five batches. We hope that all the five batches over 1000 Nigerians saying that they will come back to their country. There should be a moral story there that if our country is properly organised, then nobody will need to go and seek electricity supply and water supply and good health care in other countries of the world.
“However, today South Africa and Mexico will be playing the first match at the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City. I urge all Nigerians to support Mexico so that we don’t even have a situation whereby South Africans will say “these Nigerians have come again. They are doing their job for them, and there will be another wave of xenophobic attacks.

The senate on Thursday distanced itself from the warrant of arrest issued against Mele Kyari, former group chief executive officer, GCEO, of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company, NNPC, Limited, by its committee on public accounts.
It also distanced itself from comments attributed to Adams Oshiomhole, senator representing Edo North.
Oshiomhole reportedly described the NNPC as a bunch of criminals and thieves during the committee’s hearing on Wednesday.

Lawmaker representing Edo North Senatorial District, Adams Oshiomhole has declared the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, NNPCL, a house of thieves following a claim by the former Chief Financial Officer of the company, Umar Aliya.
Aliya had during a session by the Senate Public Accounts Committee investigating alleged misappropriation of funds running into trillions of naira, claimed that some officials want their children employed in the government-owned company.
Furiously reacting to the claim, Oshiomhole said NNPC lacked reputation, stating that the alleged officials seeking employment for their children only want their family to benefit from their financial crimes.
He said, “I heard you saying that people want their children to be employed in NNPC, that is because it is a house of thieves and they want their children to benefit from it.
“NNPC has no reputation, your reputation is for fraud. How can you sit down here and say people want their children employed in NNPC? So you think we are joking here”?

The former Chief Financial Officer, CFO, of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company, NNPC, Umar Ajiya, says the company and its workers are not thieves.
Ajiya made this remark during a session by the Senate Public Accounts Committee investigating alleged misappropriation of funds.
His remark followed the allegation by a lawmaker representing the Edo North Senatorial District, Adams Oshiomhole, who declared the NNPCL a house of thieves.
He alleged that N2.9 billion was used for the incorporation and rebranding of the company, and explicitly denied that N5.8 billion was spent on the registration process itself.
“We are not thieves. N2.9 billion was used to register NNPC, not N5.8 billion. I have been presenting and defending the company’s reports to this committee over the last five or six years.
“I need to give assurance to Mr Chairman and distinguished Senators present here today, and in fact all Nigerians, that there is no money missing. Let me make it very clear that if money was actually missing in NNPC during our period, we would not have had the courage to publish the audited accounts in the past 44 years.
“The accounts were prepared and never kept hidden from the public, and even sometimes with the Auditor-General of the Federation. So we made it a duty upon us not only to give to the Auditor-General, but also to put it on our website, let Nigerians criticise and scrutinise to get out of the opaqueness and that lack of trust that the public had on NNPC,” he said.]]>
A Bayelsa State lawmaker, Fred Agbedi, has been announced as the House of Representatives Minority Leader.
The speaker of the House, Abbas Tajudeen, made this announcement on Thursday moments after settling down for the day’s business.
Also appointed is Sokoto State lawmaker, Abdusamad Dasuki, who will serve as Deputy Minority Leader.
Meanwhile, Bauchi State representative, Mansur Manu Soro, has been named Minority Chief Whip.

A public affairs analyst, Mahmud Jega, has commended former Bayelsa State Governor, Seriake Dickson, for forming the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, instead of joining the ruling party.
Featuring in an interview on Arise Television’s ‘Prime Time’ on Wednesday, Jega said the NDC has attracted so much crowd within a short period of time, noting that Dickson took a bold decision.
According to him, the NDC has become popular and one of the top three parties within the short time it was formed.
“It was quite courageous of him. Most people who leave opposition parties often join the APC, including governors, believing it offers a stronger structure and financial backing.
“However, he chose a different path. Instead of joining the APC, he went ahead to form an opposition party, which was a bold decision.
“He also managed to convince many people to join him in building and sustaining it. He also made a valid point by saying there’s no democracy without opposition,” Jega said.]]>
The Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, presidential candidate, Peter Obi, says it does not matter if President Bola Tinubu has the entire 36 governors by his side.
Speaking during a recent interview in Washington DC, Obi said he had no governor in the 2023 presidential election, yet he won in 12 states.

“For the 2027 election, it doesn’t matter if all 36 governors are with President Tinubu. I didn’t have a single governor in the last election, yet I won 12 states, even after they stole two states from me.
“By making Abuja a state, we now have 37 states because that’s what the judgment of the Supreme Court showed.
“Senator Rabi’u Kwankwaso won one state, and that was Kano. The APC, PDP and Labour Party won 12 states each. And it, I lost two by the process of rigging, I would have had 12 states,” he said.

Oyo State Police Command has arrested a suspected impostor accused of posing as a Nigerian Air Force officer to allegedly defraud a Point of Sale, POS, operator in Ibadan.
A post shared on X by security analyst, Zagazola Makama said the suspect, identified as Yusuf Abdullahi, was reportedly apprehended at Iwo Road area of Ibadan while allegedly dressed in military camouflage and pretending to be a serving sergeant in the Nigerian Air Force, NAF.
Sources told Makama that the arrest followed a complaint filed at the Iyaganku Police Division by a POS operator, Mrs Ayedun Abisola Adedoyin, who resides in the Oke-Padre area of Ibadan.
According to the complaint, the incident occurred on June 1 after the suspect allegedly visited Ogunpa Market where he bought some items, including a cooking gas regulator and air freshener, from a trader within the market.
“The suspect allegedly introduced himself as a sergeant in the Nigerian Air Force and convinced the complainant to hand over N150,000 in cash on the pretext that he would transfer the money electronically alongside payment for the items he had purchased.
“After collecting the cash and the items, he allegedly disappeared without making the promised transfer,” the source said.
Police sources said the suspect was later tracked and arrested on June 9 at about 1:40 p.m. while still wearing military camouflage.
Investigations further revealed that the suspect had allegedly been arrested previously by the same police division over a similar offence before he was handed over to the Nigerian Air Force Base in Akobo, Ibadan, for prosecution and disciplinary action.
During questioning, police detectives were said to have contacted a serving Nigerian Air Force officer, Flight Lieutenant Amuda, who is attached to the NAF Base in Akobo, Ibadan, but currently serving in Adamawa State.
The officer reportedly confirmed that the suspect was not a serving personnel of the Nigerian Air Force.
Police authorities stated that investigations were ongoing to determine the full extent of the suspect’s alleged activities and to ascertain whether other victims may have been defrauded through the same scheme.

The Ogun State Police Command has foiled a planned kidnapping of a Chinese national and arrested two suspected conspirators allegedly involved in a plot to demand a ransom of N50 million from the victim.
The suspects, identified as Chinedu Onwuemena, 41, and Jimoh Ojo, 37, were arrested by operatives of the Obalende Police Division, following intelligence reports of an impending abduction along the Ijebu-Ode/Odogbolu Expressway.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer of the command, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, the arrests were made at about 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, after the Divisional Police Officer received credible intelligence regarding the planned operation.
Babaseyi said police operatives, including members of the division’s surveillance team, were immediately deployed to the identified location where the suspects were intercepted and arrested before carrying out the crime.
“The timely intervention of our operatives successfully thwarted what could have resulted in a serious kidnapping incident,” the police spokesperson stated.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects allegedly conspired to abduct a Chinese expatriate and demand a ransom of N50 million for his release.
The police further disclosed that one of the suspects, Onwuemena, who worked as an interpreter and driver within the victim’s company, allegedly exploited his position and access to facilitate the planned abduction.
“Further findings showed that the arrested suspects did not act alone. Investigations have established that they were working in concert with another accomplice who is currently at large,” Babaseyi added.
He noted that efforts were ongoing to apprehend the fleeing suspect and uncover the full extent of the criminal network behind the conspiracy.
The case has since been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigation.
Commending the operatives for their professionalism and swift response, the State Commissioner of Police, CP Bode Ojajuni, praised the officers of the Obalende Division for acting promptly on intelligence that led to the successful operation.
“The professionalism, vigilance and proactive action of the operatives prevented what could have resulted in a serious kidnapping incident,” the Commissioner said.
Ojajuni also underscored the importance of community collaboration in combating crime, noting that the successful operation highlighted the value of timely intelligence sharing between residents and security agencies.
He reassured residents and members of the business community of the command’s commitment to intelligence-led policing, proactive crime prevention and the continued pursuit of criminal elements threatening public safety.
