The South African Police Service (SAPS) has arrested a 59-year-old pastor and his 58-year-old wife following the shocking discovery of about 200 people at an allegedly illegal rehabilitation centre in Siyabuswa, Mpumalanga.
The couple were arrested on Friday, October 16, 2026, after officials from the Department of Social Development alerted the police following an inspection of the facility a day earlier.
According to the police, preliminary investigations suggest that the couple were operating the rehabilitation centre without the necessary registration and authorisation. The facility was also reportedly found to have failed to meet basic health and safety requirements.
What officials reportedly discovered inside the centre has raised serious concerns about the treatment of the people staying there. Some occupants were allegedly living in overcrowded rooms, while others were reportedly chained to one another. Several people were also said to have sores on their bodies, with the Department of Social Development describing the conditions as “gross inhumane conditions.”
Following the operation, 14 people were taken to receive medical treatment.
The pastor and his wife are facing several charges, including kidnapping, operating an unregistered treatment centre in violation of the Prevention of and Treatment for Substance Abuse Act, and breaching health and safety regulations under relevant environmental health by-laws and the National Health Act.
Police have confirmed that experienced detectives and specialised units have been assigned to investigate the matter under the leadership of provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Apaphia Modise. Authorities have also indicated that additional arrests and charges may follow as investigations continue.

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has assured families affected by the aircraft crash in Igbokoda, Ondo State, of continued support as recovery efforts face difficult underwater conditions.
Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Aneke, gave the assurance, saying the Air Force would provide welfare assistance to the affected families beyond the ongoing recovery operation.
In a statement released on Friday by the NAF spokesperson, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, the service said the support package would include eligible entitlements, benevolent funds, scholarships for qualified children and other approved welfare benefits.
The Air Force also announced that a dedicated helpline had been established at its headquarters to ensure affected families receive timely information and updates about the recovery operation.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arraigned Halifa Abdulmajid before the Kano State High Court over an alleged ₦34.875 million spaghetti supply deal that reportedly went wrong.
Abdulmajid appeared before Justice Musa Karaye to face a one-count charge of criminal misappropriation. According to the prosecution, the money belonged to Fahad Adaji and was allegedly paid for the supply of spaghetti, but the goods were never delivered.
The EFCC told the court that the funds were transferred to a First Bank account belonging to Muazu Abdullahi, allegedly on Abdulmajid’s instructions, for the purchase of IRS Spaghetti from BUA.
The alleged offence reportedly took place in Kano between September and October 2024.
When the charge was read to him, Abdulmajid pleaded not guilty.
Following his plea, the prosecution counsel, Mustapha Maiwada, asked the court to fix a date for trial and remand the defendant in custody.
Justice Karaye granted the requests and ordered that Abdulmajid be remanded in a correctional facility pending further proceedings.
The court subsequently adjourned the case until November 2 for the commencement of the hearing.

The Kano State Police Command has arrested two 19-year-old men over the alleged possession of an illegal firearm after officers recovered a locally made revolver and two live rounds of ammunition.
According to the police, the first suspect, Rufai Ahmed of Hotoro Quarters, was arrested at about 10:30 p.m. on October 11, 2026, after officers stopped a tricycle on Sokoto Road over suspected criminal activity.
A search conducted during the stop reportedly led to the discovery of a bag containing the locally made revolver and two rounds of live ammunition.
Further investigations subsequently led to the arrest of the second suspect, Aliyu Ibrahim, 19, of Kawo Quarters, in connection with the case.
The Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Abdullahi Kiyawa, confirmed the arrests, adding that both suspects would be charged in court after the conclusion of investigations.
The Commissioner of Police in Kano State, Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, commended the officers involved in the operation for their efforts and reaffirmed the command's commitment to tackling the circulation of illegal firearms and other criminal activities across the state.

The Benue State Police Command has confirmed the abduction of Rev. Fr. John Otache, the parish priest of St. Margaret’s Parish, Ajegbe-Awume, in Ohimini Local Government Area of the state.
Police spokesperson, DSP Aondogu Orchia, confirmed the incident on Friday in Makurdi, assuring the public that investigations were ongoing and efforts were being made to secure the priest’s safe release.
According to a statement issued by the Catholic Diocese of Otukpo and signed by its Chancellor, Rev. Fr. Joseph Itodo, Fr. Otache was abducted on October 13 while returning home from Otukpo.
The priest was reportedly travelling along the Otobi Amejo-Ajegbe Road in Ohimini when armed men intercepted him and took him away.
The incident has left the Diocese deeply concerned, with Bishop Michael Apochi expressing profound pain over the abduction.
In response, the Diocese has called on the faithful and members of the public to pray for Fr. Otache’s safe return, as well as for other victims currently being held by kidnappers across the country.
The Diocese also recalled another troubling incident involving a seminarian, Kelvin Ochai, who was abducted from the Bishop’s Residence in Otukpo on July 9, 2026.
It further noted that about three years ago, Rev. Fr. Anthony Adikwu, who was then serving as the parish priest of St. Margaret’s Parish, was also kidnapped by armed men.

A traditional ruler in Plateau State, Da Jatau Yohanna Samkwar, has died after being attacked by gunmen at his residence in Daffo community, Bokkos Local Government Area.
The monarch was reportedly attacked on Monday night, when the assailants shot him in the leg and head. He was rushed to a hospital in Daffo for treatment before being referred to another medical facility, where he eventually died on Wednesday.
Residents suspect that the attackers may have been members of a Fulani militia, although their identities have not been officially confirmed.
According to a youth leader in the community, Malo Stephen, the incident came just days after one of the monarch’s sons was kidnapped. The son was reportedly released on Sunday, only for the gunmen to return to the royal residence days later.

A private jet operated by Triton Aviation reportedly lost one of its doors shortly after taking off from the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja on Thursday, triggering an emergency response.
The CL60 aircraft, with registration number T7-SEI, was heading to Lagos when the incident occurred at about 4:20 p.m.
According to reports, the crew immediately issued a Mayday distress call and was instructed to return to Abuja. The aircraft subsequently made a safe landing on Runway 22, approximately 14 minutes after the incident.
Following the landing, it was discovered that a door was missing from the aircraft's fuselage.
Airport fire, rescue and medical teams had been placed on standby as a precaution while the jet returned to the airport.
In a surprising development, farmers reportedly discovered the missing door on a farm in the Abuja area and later handed it over.
The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has confirmed the incident, stating that the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) is responsible for investigating the matter.
A source at the NSIB also disclosed that investigators had been deployed to look into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
However, the number of people on board the aircraft at the time has yet to be confirmed. Triton Aviation had also not responded to requests for comments as of the time of reporting.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arraigned three men over allegations that they impersonated popular Nigerian blogger Tunde Ednut to defraud unsuspecting members of the public of ₦18.2 million.
The defendants, Raymond Charles Yafetus, Auwal Ibrahim and Babangida Yahaya Ibrahim, appeared before Justice S. O. Ibrahim of the Federal High Court in Abuja to face charges bordering on cybercrime, conspiracy, impersonation and obtaining money under false pretences.
According to the EFCC's charge, the alleged fraud took place between April and June 2026. During the period, the defendants allegedly used the identity of Adekunle Tunde Olaoluwa, widely known as Tunde Ednut, to open bank accounts in different financial institutions and collect a total of ₦18,264,700 from unsuspecting individuals.
One of the charges accused the defendants of conspiring to impersonate the blogger with the intention of defrauding members of the public. The alleged offences were said to be contrary to the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act, 2015.
When the charges were read to them in court, the defendants pleaded not guilty.
Following their pleas, the prosecution counsel, Elizabeth Alabi, urged the court to remand them at the Kuje Correctional Centre pending the commencement of their trial.
Justice Ibrahim subsequently ordered that the defendants be remanded at the facility and adjourned the case until November 17, 2026, for further proceedings.

At least 20 people have reportedly been injured after a gas pipeline explosion rocked Aleto community in Eleme Local Government Area of Rivers State on Thursday evening, leaving several properties damaged.
The explosion reportedly occurred around 5 p.m. along Old Bori Road and involved a ruptured pipeline said to belong to the Nigeria Gas Company. Several residents were affected, while houses, roadside stalls, a mechanic workshop and vehicles were reportedly damaged. The injured victims were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment.
An eyewitness alleged that the pipeline had been leaking for about three weeks before the explosion. According to the source, community leaders had raised concerns over the situation and called for urgent intervention to prevent a possible disaster.
Confirming that complaints had been made before the incident, the Leader of the Eleme Legislative Council, Daniel Chuma, said he had written to the company and petitioned relevant authorities over the reported leak.
Chuma explained that the council had contacted the Nigeria Gas Company, the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA) and the Rivers State Ministry of Environment, with the police also copied in the correspondence.
“We asked for a joint investigation. We don’t know what they did before they left. Today we were called to an explosion at the same pipeline of the Nigeria Gas Company that has destroyed houses, cars, and caused many casualties. People have been rushed to the hospital,” he said.
He further expressed concern that no representative of the company had visited the scene as of the time he spoke. Residents had reportedly cordoned off the affected area and were advised to stay away for their own safety.
Meanwhile, the Youths and Environmental Advocacy Centre (YEAC-Nigeria) has called on the government and relevant agencies to intervene urgently. The organisation’s Executive Director, Fyneface Fyneface, confirmed that buildings were affected and some residents had been hospitalised.
YEAC-Nigeria stressed that it had not independently confirmed any fatalities, adding that the exact cause of the explosion remained unverified.
The organisation also urged NOSDRA to establish the identity of the facility operator and conduct a Joint Investigation Visit to determine what led to the incident. It further called for relevant provisions of the Petroleum Industry Act 2021 to be applied where appropriate.

The Federal Government has assured Nigerians that there are no plans to increase electricity tariffs, stressing that its focus is on improving power supply and ensuring reliable electricity across the country.
The Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, gave the assurance in Ibadan, Oyo State, during the groundbreaking ceremony for five interconnected mini-grid projects with a combined capacity of 17.7 megawatts and a 17.74-megawatt-hour Battery Energy Storage System (BESS).
Speaking at the event, Tegbe urged Nigerians to ignore reports suggesting that another electricity tariff hike was being planned. He said the government’s priority was to build a power sector capable of delivering electricity around the clock.
“I want to say this clearly and without ambiguity: there is no plan to increase electricity tariffs. What we are planning is a power sector that works around the clock. Our commitment is 24/7 power,” the minister stated.
Tegbe explained that the government was working on a broader energy strategy aimed at improving electricity supply through designated energy corridors, including Lagos-Ogun, Abuja-Kaduna-Kano and Benin-Enugu-Port Harcourt.
He added that efforts were also underway to strengthen the national grid and upgrade power generation and transmission infrastructure across the eastern, western and central parts of the country.
The five mini-grid projects are located in Bola, Jiboye, Molade-Adelubi, Ogo Oluwa and Sooko-Elega. When completed, they are expected to improve electricity access in Akinyele, Ido, Ibadan North, Egbeda and Lagelu Local Government Areas of Oyo State.
According to the minister, the projects are expected to reduce residents’ dependence on petrol and diesel generators while creating a more favourable environment for businesses, investment and job creation.
He described the initiative as part of the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda, acknowledging the contributions of the Rural Electrification Agency, Paras Energy and Natural Resources Development Limited, the World Bank, Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company, the Oyo State Government, traditional rulers and other stakeholders.

A Lagos-based car dealer, Chima Edmund, has accused the Lagos State Police Command of releasing a man who stole a 2025 Toyota Tundra worth about ₦130 million from his showroom in Victoria Garden City (VGC), Lekki, before crashing it into a canal in Ajiran
Edmund, the founder of Mayor and Sheiks Autos, told PUNCH Metro that the incident happened on Monday, October 12, when the suspect reportedly walked into his showroom pretending to be a potential buyer.
According to the dealer, the man arrived at about 4pm, carrying a bag, and expressed interest in purchasing the luxury pickup truck. He allegedly asked to inspect the vehicle and requested the key from one of the staff members.
Edmund explained that his staff had no reason to suspect anything unusual, as the man appeared to be a genuine customer. However, after placing his bag inside the vehicle and starting the engine, the suspect allegedly engaged the gear and sped off with the truck.
The dealer further claimed that the suspect drove through parts of Ajah before eventually crashing the vehicle into a canal in the Ajiran area.
Edmund said the incident left him with a huge financial burden, adding that he had to cover the cost of repairing the damaged truck, fixing a damaged barricade, paying for the medical treatment of injured people and covering the suspect's treatment.
He estimated the cost of repairing the Toyota Tundra alone at approximately ₦40 million.
However, the car dealer expressed displeasure over the police handling of the case, alleging that investigators pressured him to withdraw his complaint after the suspect was reportedly found to have a psychiatric condition.
Edmund said he became suspicious of the police's actions when he felt he was being rushed into closing the case. He also claimed that the suspect had been released on bail as of the evening before his interview.
“I am already suspecting foul play in the police dealings because I was hurried to close the case when the man was confirmed to be a psychiatric patient,” he said.
Reacting to the allegations, Lagos State Police Command spokesperson, SP Abimbola Adebisi, denied that the suspect's release was improper.
Adebisi maintained that the suspect's psychiatric condition had been certified by recognised government hospitals and competent courts. She also stated that the complainant was aware of the medical findings during the investigation.
According to the police spokesperson, Edmund subsequently submitted a letter withdrawing his complaint, after which the suspect was handed over to his mother for rehabilitation.

The Rivers State Police Command has suspended the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in charge of Abuloma Division and another senior officer following reports that suspected cultists financed the renovation of a police outpost in the area.
The development came to light after a video showing the suspected cultists visiting the facility to celebrate the completion of the renovation circulated on social media. The visit reportedly took place on Thursday, October 15, 2026.
In a statement issued in Port Harcourt on Friday, the Police Public Relations Officer, Blessing Agabe, an Assistant Superintendent of Police, confirmed that the command had taken notice of the incident and ordered a full investigation.
Agabe said the police strongly condemned any action capable of undermining the integrity, discipline and professional standards of the Nigeria Police Force. She stressed that police stations are public institutions established to protect citizens and enforce the law, not places where suspected criminal groups should seek recognition or legitimacy.
According to her, the command would not tolerate any conduct that could damage public confidence in the police.
Following the development, the DPO in charge of Abuloma Division and the Divisional Officer overseeing the affected outpost have been queried and relieved of their duties pending the outcome of the investigation.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Olugbenga A. Adepoju, has also directed a comprehensive investigation to determine exactly what happened and establish whether the allegations are true.

A Bureau de Change operator has told an Abuja High Court that he converted about ₦1.4 billion allegedly received from Abba Adaudu, an associate of former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello, into dollars to pay the school fees of Bello’s children.
Jamilu Abdullahi, the 19th prosecution witness in Bello’s ongoing ₦110.4 billion fraud trial, made the disclosure in court on Thursday. He said the transactions took place between December 15, 2021, and February 21, 2022.
According to Abdullahi, the money was converted into foreign currency and transferred to the American International School of Abuja (AISA) to cover the school fees of Bello’s children.
“I carried out the transactions upon the receipt of the school fees from Abba Adaudu to effect transfers to AISA on behalf of the names and the account details for the school, provided for the transfers, and it was concluded successfully to AISA’s account,” the witness told the court.
The reported payments were said to have covered the children’s school fees well into the future, up to the 2034–2035 academic session, with payments allegedly made in advance until they complete their education.

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has set up a three-member committee to investigate allegations of financial impropriety surrounding the receipt, management and disbursement of a ₦100 million gift from the Imo State Government to its Owerri Branch.
The decision follows concerns raised by members of the branch and a formal request by 183 members for an Extraordinary General Meeting to address the matter.
NBA President, Oyinkansola Badejo-Okusanya, SAN, announced the committee’s composition, naming the association’s General Secretary, Afam Okeke; Third Vice-President, Iniobong Irene Pepple; and Treasurer, Esther Jimoh, as members of the panel.
The committee has been tasked with reviewing relevant financial records, hearing from all parties involved and submitting its findings and recommendations on or before October 30, 2026.
As part of its assignment, the panel will also attend the Extraordinary General Meeting scheduled for Thursday, October 15, at 2 p.m. The members will represent the NBA President, observe the proceedings and help ensure that the meeting is conducted in an orderly manner.
Badejo-Okusanya, however, emphasised that the establishment of the committee should not be interpreted as a conclusion that any individual had engaged in wrongdoing.
She assured members that everyone whose conduct comes under scrutiny would be given a fair opportunity to respond to the allegations. She also directed that all relevant financial documents and records be preserved and made available to the committee to support its investigation.
The NBA President reiterated her commitment to addressing the concerns raised by members through a transparent and orderly process, noting that accountability must go hand in hand with fairness and due process.
She added that how the association handles the matter would be important in maintaining members’ confidence in its leadership and internal processes.

A petrol tanker explosion in the Oluku area of Benin City, Edo State, has left many people feared dead and several others with severe burns and injuries.
The tragic incident occurred around 2 p.m. on Thursday, October 15, after a petrol tanker reportedly fell while attempting a U-turn near Oluku Market, spilling fuel onto the road and nearby drainage channels.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), residents and passers-by rushed to scoop the spilled petrol into containers before security operatives arrived at the scene. Sadly, what began as an attempt to collect the fuel quickly turned into a disaster.
An eyewitness, Obasogie Felix, explained that the fire started shortly after a resident filled a 25-litre jerrycan with petrol and strapped it to his motorcycle.
“The man brought a 25-litre gallon and scooped fuel. He tied the gallon to his bike and was riding off, not knowing that it was leaking. Suddenly, we saw a spark and an inferno started,” Felix recounted.
Another eyewitness, who was also among those scooping fuel, said he narrowly escaped being caught in the fire after a soldier warned him about the danger.

Dr Musa Illiyasu Kwankwaso, a member of the APC Presidential Campaign Council, has predicted a landslide victory for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election, pointing to what he described as growing support for the president across party lines.

A heartbreaking shooting at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, has claimed the lives of three children, aged 5, 8 and 11, as well as a teacher. Two other victims, including a 7-year-old child and a 54-year-old teacher, remain in critical condition.
According to Police Chief Mike Krantz, the suspected shooter, a 16-year-old resident of Bend, was also killed after a community member reportedly pursued and shot him inside the school.
Authorities said the first emergency call came in at 12:59 p.m. on Thursday from a motorist who reported being shot at several times by an individual carrying a long gun. Within minutes, dispatchers received additional reports that the suspect had entered the school building.
Police ordered an immediate lockdown at 1:01 p.m., and the first officers arrived just a minute later. Shortly afterwards, officers reported that the suspect was down.
Upon entering the school, officers confirmed the suspect's death, searched classrooms and rushed to provide emergency assistance to the injured. The two critically injured victims were transported to St. Charles Medical Center for treatment.

A 37-year-old woman, Fatima Sanda, has been sentenced to two years in prison for procuring a 16-year-old girl for segxwal exploitation in Borno State.
The conviction was secured by the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) at the Borno State High Court in Maiduguri on Monday.
The court, presided over by Justice Aisha M. Ndume, also ordered Sanda to pay ₦500,000 in compensation to the victim.
According to NAPTIP, Sanda was found guilty under Section 16(1) of the Trafficking in Persons (Prohibition) Enforcement and Administration Act, 2015, as amended. The offence involved procuring the minor and subjecting her to segxwal exploitation by other people.
The conviction comes about a month after another court in Niger State sentenced a 27-year-old man, Hussaini Suleiman, to seven years in prison for molesting an eight-year-old girl at his residence.
NAPTIP disclosed that Suleiman pleaded guilty to the offence after the case was referred to its Niger State Command by the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps on April 16, 2026. He was subsequently arraigned on September 10, 2026.

Speaking during an interview, Gbolabo explained that he received an early-morning phone call informing him about the singer’s condition. He immediately rushed to the hospital, only to learn that the singer had suddenly collapsed.
According to him, Toluwanisings had appeared to be in good health before the unfortunate incident.
“From my understanding, there was nothing wrong with him. He has always been fine and in perfect health condition. I was told he just slumped suddenly,” he said.

A 46-year-old pastor, Cristian Popescu, from Bothell, Washington, is facing serious federal charges over allegations that he defrauded members of his congregation of approximately $13 million through a fraudulent business investment scheme.
According to federal prosecutors, Popescu, who leads Passion for Christ, a Christian congregation in Kirkland, allegedly convinced church members to invest in his Bellevue-based startup, Followone Inc., which he described as an e-commerce platform and social networking company. He reportedly told potential investors that God had chosen them to support the business.
Prosecutors alleged that Popescu attracted about 30 investors by making false claims about the company's revenue, share value and plans to list on the Nasdaq stock exchange. At one point, he allegedly valued the company at $1.4 billion, despite knowing that it had little or no actual value.
In an attempt to secure more investments, Popescu allegedly promised some investors positions on the company's board in exchange for investments of $1 million. He also reportedly encouraged several people to withdraw money from their retirement accounts and their children's college savings to fund the venture. One investor allegedly transferred nearly $1 million in a single transaction.
Investigators further alleged that Popescu used shell companies and fake invoices to divert investors' money for personal use. More than $4.5 million was reportedly transferred into accounts belonging to him, his wife and other family members.
Between 2017 and 2024, he allegedly paid himself more than $1 million in wages. His wife was also reportedly placed on the company's payroll and received approximately $300,000, despite allegations that she never worked for the business.
The situation allegedly became even more troubling when investors began demanding refunds. Rather than returning their money, Popescu reportedly told some of them that they were “demonically possessed.”
The pastor has been indicted on 10 counts of wire fraud and five counts of money laundering. He was arraigned in a U.S. District Court in Seattle and subsequently released under electronic monitoring.
If convicted, Popescu could face up to 20 years in prison for each wire fraud count and up to 10 years for each money laundering count, in addition to possible fines.
His trial is scheduled for December 21.

Two young men identified as bricklayers were reportedly apprehended by youths in Obodogba, Okpanam, near Asaba, Delta State, on Tuesday, following allegations that they were attempting to bury a little girl.
According to reports, residents raised the alarm after discovering the men’s alleged actions. The suspects were reportedly forced to exhume the child’s body before being taken to the Okpanam Divisional Police Station for investigation.

Senator Abdul Ningi has shared the heartbreaking circumstances surrounding the death of former senator Bello Mandiya, who was reportedly found dead in his Abuja residence nearly 72 hours after suffering a fatal fall in his bathroom.
Ningi, who represents Bauchi Central Senatorial District, recounted the incident during a Senate plenary session, revealing that he was in Saudi Arabia when his son called to inform him of Mandiya’s death.

A 37-year-old former supply teacher, Abdul Rahman, has been sentenced to six years in prison in the United Kingdom after admitting to secretly photographing schoolgirls under their skirts and creating segxwalised deepfake images of pupils using their photos.
Rahman reportedly used his iPhone to take upskirting photographs and followed girls upstairs to film them while working at seven different schools. He also tracked down pupils’ social media accounts, using their pictures to create segxwalised images and sharing them alongside pornographic content online.
His criminal activities reportedly escalated over time, beginning with the distribution of segxwalised deepfake images before progressing to upskirting and voyeurism.
The case came to light after the mother of one of the girls discovered her daughter’s photograph in a school uniform alongside graphic segxwal content on X, prompting the matter to be reported to the authorities.
Investigators also uncovered images in which the faces of schoolgirls had been superimposed onto women wearing bikinis and revealing outfits. Some of the posts carried disturbing captions, including “daddy”, “agegap” and “ddlgkink”.
Between December 2023 and June 2025, Rahman targeted 15 girls aged between 13 and 16 at secondary schools across Bury, Bolton and Salford.
He pleaded guilty to 21 offences, including 12 counts of taking indecent photographs of children through upskirting, four counts of publishing obscene material, three counts of making indecent images of children, one count of voyeurism and one count of distributing an indecent image of a child.
Detective Constable Lisa McGaffin of Greater Manchester Police described the case as “incredibly worrying”, raising concerns about the growing misuse of artificial intelligence to create abusive images of children.
She warned that the ways criminals were exploiting AI had developed rapidly, with authorities facing challenges they could hardly have anticipated just 12 months earlier. She described the situation as “a very, very difficult problem”.
Prosecutor Alexandra Mann condemned Rahman’s actions, saying he had abused his position as a teacher. She also described the segxwalised deepfake images as a “gross breach of trust”.
Meanwhile, Sky News correspondent Greg Milam reported that potentially hundreds of children could have come into contact with Rahman during his time working in schools. Police subsequently contacted the schools where he had been employed and reached out to the families of identified victims.
In addition to his six-year prison sentence, Rahman has been placed on the Sex Offenders Register and banned from working in schools for 20 years.

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has seized counterfeit packaging materials worth over ₦200 million and sealed five shops at Old Court Road Market in Aba, Abia State, over alleged involvement in the production and supply of fake packaging materials for alcoholic beverages and other products.
The operation, carried out by NAFDAC’s Investigation and Enforcement Directorate following credible intelligence, uncovered a large quantity of suspected counterfeit labels, bottle corks and other packaging materials bearing the names of popular brands.
Some of the affected brands include Jameson, Glenfiddich, Four Cousins, Lord’s Dry Gin, Imperial Blue, Goya Oil, Chelsea, Squadron and Seaman’s Aromatic Schnapps.
According to a NAFDAC official, the discovery was particularly disturbing because some of the counterfeit materials were so well produced that even the original manufacturers could find it difficult to distinguish them from genuine packaging.
The official also alleged that packaging materials for sachet alcohol, which has been banned, were still being manufactured and secretly stored within the market.
However, the raid was not without challenges. NAFDAC operatives reportedly faced threats and resistance from some traders, making it difficult to evacuate the seized materials from the affected shops.
The agency disclosed that the owners of the five shops were not present during the operation. As a result, the premises were sealed to prevent anyone from tampering with the remaining materials inside.
In response, the Market Union Chairman reportedly promised to cooperate with NAFDAC by helping to secure the sealed shops and ensure that their owners are identified and brought before the agency.
The development highlights growing concerns over counterfeit product packaging and the potential risks it poses to consumers, particularly when fake materials are used to disguise substandard or adulterated products as genuine goods.

A shocking incident in Guatemala has left a family and mourners stunned after a 15-year-old girl, identified as Yuleidy Ixcotoyac, reportedly woke up inside her coffin during her funeral, hours after she was mistakenly declared dead by her father.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has urged the Nigerian government not to bring back blanket petrol subsidies, recommending targeted financial assistance for vulnerable households struggling with rising fuel prices.
The advice was delivered during the 2026 IMF-World Bank Annual Meetings in Bangkok, Thailand, where Rodrigo Valdés, director of the IMF’s Fiscal Affairs Department, warned that general fuel subsidies are costly and often benefit wealthier consumers more than low-income households.
“Protecting people is not the same as protecting the price of fuels,” Valdés said, stressing that keeping fuel prices artificially low could put additional pressure on government finances and discourage consumers from adjusting to supply shortages.
He noted that measures designed to shield consumers from rising energy prices had cost countries between 1 and 1.5 per cent of their Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in 2026.
Rather than subsidising fuel for everyone, Valdés advised governments to strengthen social safety nets and use household data to identify those who genuinely need support.
Similarly, Davide Furceri, a division chief in the IMF’s Fiscal Affairs Department, recommended redirecting money spent on blanket subsidies towards more targeted interventions, including transport assistance, school feeding programmes and support for vulnerable farmers.
Furceri explained that governments could provide relief more effectively by subsidising public transport fares instead of keeping petrol prices low for all consumers.
“Gasoline could go up, and perhaps bus fees may be subsidised in a way that is a much better policy at the end of the day than just a blanket subsidy for everybody,” he said.
Although he acknowledged that some countries lack the systems needed to identify beneficiaries and distribute targeted assistance, he encouraged governments to consider temporary alternatives while developing more effective support programmes.
The IMF’s recommendation comes as the Nigerian government introduces a 30-day petrol discount at Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) retail outlets, with public transport operators among those being prioritised.
Finance Minister Taiwo Oyedele said NNPC retail stations would sell petrol at cost by giving up their retail profit margin during the period. He described the initiative as temporary relief for consumers rather than a return to the former fuel subsidy system.

An Iranian accounting student, Najmeh Amini, 23, has reportedly been sentenced to death over an alleged social media post deemed insulting to the Prophet, sparking renewed concerns about human rights and freedom of expression in Iran.
According to reports, Amini was sentenced last month after spending eight months in Vakilabad Prison in Mashhad. In addition to the reported death sentence, she was handed a prison term of 12 years, six months and one day over allegations of acting against national security and spreading anti-government propaganda.
Amini was reportedly arrested on January 31 following nationwide anti-government protests that human rights groups say were met with a deadly crackdown, leaving thousands killed and tens of thousands detained.
Following her sentencing, a leaked voice recording allegedly made inside the prison emerged, in which the young student appealed for help and urged the international community not to forget her.
“I am an innocent girl, a young person with so many hopes and dreams. I have parents who are waiting for me,” she reportedly said.
She appealed to lawyers, human rights activists and international organisations to review her case, expressing fears about her uncertain future.
“Remember my name; I may not be able to speak again,” she added, while expressing hope that she would witness a free Iran before her execution.
Iran Human Rights Monitor has called for urgent international intervention, alleging that Amini was arbitrarily detained and denied access to legal counsel.
Her reported sentencing comes amid growing international concern over Iran’s use of the death penalty against individuals accused of offences connected to anti-government protests.
Amnesty International has also warned that dozens of people remain at risk of execution following trials it has described as unfair.

A 25-year-old man, Bosun Osagie, has been sentenced to two years and three months in prison after hacking a woman’s social media accounts, using her pictures to create fake profiles and attempting to blackmail her.
According to Merseyside Police, the case was reported in February 2023 after the victim discovered that her Snapchat and X (formerly Twitter) accounts had been compromised.
Investigations revealed that her pictures were allegedly used to create fake accounts advertising her as a sex worker. The images were also reportedly sold online without her consent.
Osagie, who resides on Hartslock Drive, Bexley, London, was arrested and charged following police investigations. He later pleaded guilty to computer hacking and blackmail.
He was sentenced on Monday, October 12, and was also handed a 10-year restraining order prohibiting him from contacting the victim.
Speaking on the case, Detective Sergeant Darren Devonport said Osagie’s actions had caused the woman significant emotional distress. He explained that the offender had violated her privacy and attempted to extort money from her through blackmail.
The detective also praised the victim for coming forward to report the incident, stressing the importance of speaking out against online abuse.

The Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Adebo Ogundoyin, has expressed deep sorrow over the death of a serving National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, Oluwatosin Abidakun, who lost her life in a fatal road crash involving an articulated truck in Ibadan on Monday.

German police have seized a humanoid robot following allegations that it touched a 16-year-old girl inappropriately and made segxwally suggestive gestures towards her in Cologne.
According to police reports, the incident happened shortly before midnight on October 10, 2026, near a fast-food restaurant along a busy nightlife strip.
Videos circulating on social media reportedly show the four-foot-tall robot, which has red-and-gold features, approaching the teenager from behind, touching her buttocks and making repeated thrusting movements towards her.
Police said the robot's 16-year-old owner and his 19-year-old companion allegedly recorded and livestreamed the incident on social media while making comments about what was happening.
When officers arrived at the scene, they found the two young men nearby. The robot had reportedly already been placed inside the trunk of a Volkswagen. Police subsequently seized the machine and both suspects' smartphones as part of their investigation.
German media reports indicate that the humanoid robot is a commercially available model valued at around €5,000 (approximately $5,600).
Following the incident, one of the individuals involved reportedly claimed on TikTok that the robot had accidentally bumped into a woman while attempting to avoid another passerby. However, longer videos circulating online appear to show the robot making segxwally suggestive movements after the alleged contact.
Investigators are now examining the available footage to establish exactly what happened and determine whether the robot was being remotely controlled, following a pre-programmed sequence or operating independently.
Police are investigating a suspected segxwally motivated insult. Under German law, the offence of segxwal harassment generally requires physical contact between individuals, meaning the precise circumstances of the incident could be important in determining whether that offence applies. Authorities may also investigate possible violations relating to the unauthorised publication of images.
As of the latest reports, neither of the two individuals has been charged.

A 27-year-old woman, identified as Metallica Rose Harrison, has been charged with two counts of criminal homicide after allegedly stabbing her husband and their three-year-old son to death during a family stay at a resort in Pennsylvania, United States.
According to police reports, the tragic incident occurred inside a room at Great Wolf Lodge, where the family had been staying for several weeks. Investigators said the family checked into the resort on September 21 and extended their stay on October 5.
Authorities allege that Harrison stabbed her husband, Charles Harrison, and their young son, identified as T.H., in the chest before inflicting injuries on her own wrists and neck in what appeared to be a suicide attempt.
Police said Harrison called 911 following the incident and reportedly asked the dispatcher for guidance on how to find a vein to puncture, telling emergency services that she wanted to die.
“My husband and son are already gone in the bed in the living room,” she allegedly told the dispatcher. “They’re already gone, I’m sorry.”

The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Ojo Amupitan, has said he has committed the responsibility of conducting the 2027 general elections into God’s hands, while assuring Nigerians that artificial intelligence (AI) will not determine who wins the polls.
Amupitan made this known on Wednesday at the Artificial Intelligence and Democracy Forum 2026 in Abuja, organised by Yiaga Africa.
Speaking about the enormous responsibility that comes with his position, the INEC chairman said his faith in God remained his biggest source of strength amid the pressure and expectations surrounding the forthcoming elections.
He explained that whenever he reflected on the magnitude of the task ahead, he drew comfort from the Bible, particularly the passage that invites those who are weary and burdened to find rest in God.
“Sometimes people say, ‘You are not bothered.’ I said, I’ve handed over everything to God,” Amupitan said.
On the growing role of artificial intelligence in elections, he made it clear that technology would not be allowed to determine the outcome of the 2027 general elections.
“No, algorithms will not and must never decide the 2027 votes. Algorithms will not decide the vote because the choice of who leads Nigeria belongs exclusively to the Nigerian people,” he stated.
According to him, AI would serve as a support system for INEC rather than replace human judgment. He explained that the technology could help improve election logistics, ensure the effective deployment of electoral materials and personnel, and identify inconsistencies in results uploaded from polling units.
Amupitan also revealed the scale of preparations for the 2027 elections, noting that more than 103 million registered voters are expected to participate across 176,846 polling units in Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
He disclosed that INEC had completed 10 of the 14 major activities outlined in its election timetable and had started receiving additional Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) devices ahead of the polls.
The commission has also made progress in digitising its operations, including the electronic processing of candidate nominations. Amupitan said INEC had processed more than 15,000 nominations involving 22 political parties and had introduced online voter registration to make the process more accessible.
Despite the growing use of technology in election administration, the INEC chairman stressed that the final collation of results would remain a human-led process in line with the law.
He maintained that while AI could help strengthen efficiency and detect possible irregularities, it would not replace the established legal procedures for determining and declaring election results.

Nigeria’s federal government spent a staggering ₦7.7 trillion on interest payments in the first half of 2026, exceeding its total revenue of ₦6.2 trillion by ₦1.5 trillion, according to a report by the World Bank.
In its 2026 Nigeria Development Update, titled Beyond the Federal Purse: How Higher Revenues Reshaped State Priorities, the World Bank highlighted the growing pressure of debt servicing on the country’s finances, largely driven by high domestic borrowing costs.
The report showed that interest payments climbed from ₦5.6 trillion in the first half of 2025 to ₦7.7 trillion during the same period in 2026. This means the government spent about 124 per cent of its total revenue on servicing interest alone.
Interest payments also increased as a share of the economy, rising from 2.5 per cent to 3.1 per cent of gross domestic product (GDP).
Despite the heavy debt burden, federal revenue recorded a significant improvement, rising to ₦6.2 trillion, equivalent to 2.5 per cent of GDP, from ₦3.6 trillion, or 1.6 per cent of GDP, in the first half of 2025.
The World Bank attributed the increase to a recovery in oil revenue, stronger corporate tax collections and higher independent revenues. Customs revenue remained relatively stable, while value-added tax (VAT) collections recorded little change.
However, the improvement in revenue did not translate into higher capital spending. Reported capital expenditure dropped sharply to ₦700 billion, representing 0.3 per cent of GDP, compared with ₦2.2 trillion, or one per cent of GDP, in the corresponding period of 2025.
Meanwhile, total federal expenditure rose to ₦16.1 trillion, equivalent to 6.5 per cent of GDP, from ₦14.6 trillion, or 6.6 per cent of GDP, a year earlier.
Personnel costs also increased from ₦3.7 trillion to ₦4.2 trillion following wage adjustments, although they remained unchanged at 1.7 per cent of GDP.

A 29-year-old prison nurse in the United Kingdom, Stephanie Adair, has pleaded guilty to misconduct in public office after admitting to having an inappropriate relationship with a convicted killer while working at HMP Wandsworth in south-west London.
Adair reportedly became involved with 28-year-old Jahki Crosdale, who was serving a six-year prison sentence for the fatal stabbing of 19-year-old trainee plumber Charlie Burns in 2015. Burns was killed over a £150 cannabis debt.
According to court details, the relationship lasted from September 1, 2023, to November 2, 2024. The affair came to light after Crosdale reportedly listed Adair’s home address in court documents.
The charge against Adair stated that she maintained an inappropriate personal relationship with the inmate and kept in contact with him through an illicit mobile phone while carrying out her duties as a prison nurse.
Crosdale also pleaded guilty to transmitting images or audio recordings from inside HMP Wandsworth and HMP Lowdham Grange without authorisation between February and October 2024.
Adair appeared before Wimbledon Magistrates’ Court, where Judge Georgina Kent directed her to cooperate with the preparation of a pre-sentence report. She is expected to be sentenced on February 9, 2027.
Following an investigation into her conduct, the Nursing and Midwifery Council temporarily barred Adair from working in prisons.
However, she is still listed as a practice nurse at Trevelyan House GP surgery in Tooting, south-west London.

The Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Olayemi Cardoso, has defended the government’s economic reforms, saying they have helped Nigeria withstand global economic challenges that could have had a more damaging impact on citizens.
Cardoso made this known while discussing how economic policies affect ordinary Nigerians. He highlighted the importance of tackling inflation, strengthening the country’s external reserves and maintaining stability in the foreign exchange market.
According to the CBN governor, inflation remains one of the biggest challenges facing low-income earners because it reduces the purchasing power of their money and makes basic goods and services more expensive.
“Arguably the most vicious tax you have on the poor is inflation,” Cardoso said, stressing that bringing inflation down would benefit Nigerians across all income groups.
He also pointed to Nigeria’s external reserves, which he described as being at their highest level in 18 years. He said the reserves have helped the country withstand global economic pressures, including the effects of ongoing conflicts and uncertainty surrounding international tariffs.

But one thing I know is that free accommodation should not automatically mean unlimited free labour, just as asking for help should not automatically be treated as exploitation. Both parties need to understand and agree on their responsibilities.

A 28-year-old Nigerian man, Adebayo Maoli, has been arrested and charged in Canada over allegations that he exposed himself to three women in two separate incidents involving Toronto’s subway system and an elevator.
According to the Toronto Police Service (TPS), the first incident occurred on September 1, 2026, aboard a southbound Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) subway train at King Station. Maoli allegedly exposed himself to two women on the train before fleeing after they activated the train’s emergency security alarm.
Police said a second incident occurred in the early hours of October 3, at approximately 12:10 a.m. The suspect allegedly followed a woman from a subway car at College Station onto an escalator before exposing himself to her.
The woman reportedly confronted him, causing him to flee the scene.
Following an investigation, police arrested Maoli and charged him with two counts of committing an indecent act and one count of segxwal assault.
Authorities believe there could be additional victims and have released details of the case to the public in a bid to identify other individuals who may have experienced similar incidents.
Maoli was scheduled to appear at the Toronto Regional Bail Centre on October 9, 2026. However, as of the time of this report, police had not made the outcome of the hearing public.

The Federal Government has defended its 30-day petrol discount initiative, insisting that the move is not a return to fuel subsidy but an effort to ease the financial pressure Nigerians are facing due to rising fuel prices.
The Minister of Information, Mohammed Idris, made this clarification on Monday during a media engagement with senior editors and broadcast anchors in Abuja. His remarks were contained in a statement issued by his aide, Rabiu Ibrahim.
According to Idris, the initiative will be funded by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC), which has agreed to sacrifice part of its profits to provide temporary relief for Nigerians struggling with the high cost of living.
He explained that the decision was aimed at cushioning the impact of rising petrol prices without reversing the government's fuel subsidy removal policy.
“The NNPC has looked at it and said, ‘Okay, we are making this much profit. Why can’t we forgo some of the profit that we are making, so that Nigerians will have some form of cushioning?’” the minister said.
Idris also pointed to signs of improvement in the economy, including declining inflation, stronger external reserves and growth in non-oil export earnings. On the rising cost of living, the minister said the Federal Government would continue engaging organised labour to find solutions to workers' concerns. He also disclosed that President Bola Tinubu supports reviewing minimum wage arrangements every three years rather than every five years.
Idris further appealed to traders to refrain from hoarding food items or deliberately creating artificial scarcity, stressing that such practices worsen the hardship faced by ordinary Nigerians. He said the government was also working to strengthen local agricultural production and build food reserves to improve food availability.
The minister also defended ongoing road construction projects across the country, dismissing suggestions that they were being undertaken for electoral purposes. He maintained that the projects were designed to improve transportation, connect cities and create economic corridors that would support businesses and economic growth.
“Nobody is fixing roads just because there is election. We are fixing roads so that Nigerians can have access on these roads, so that it can connect cities, create these economic corridors for businesses to thrive,” he said.
Speaking on press freedom, Idris said he was not aware of any directive from President Tinubu authorising the repression of the media. He urged journalists to uphold professional standards, verify information before publication and avoid sensational headlines.

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has declared himself the field operations commander for the 2027 elections in Abuja, announcing plans to coordinate President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election campaign in both the FCT and Rivers State.
Wike made the declaration on Monday during a stakeholders’ meeting of the Rainbow Coalition in Abuja, where members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) agreed to work together ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking at the gathering, the minister said he would take charge of coordinating electoral activities in the FCT, while also playing a key role in Rivers State to support Tinubu’s re-election bid.
“I am in charge of the FCT election. I am the commander of field operations as far as the FCT election is concerned,” Wike declared.
He further confirmed that the coalition had agreed to support Tinubu for another term, adding that he would coordinate efforts in Abuja and Rivers State.
“For the presidency, all of us have agreed that it is Bola Ahmed Tinubu. I am going to coordinate the FCT and Rivers State. So you can imagine how important it is,” he said.
“I want to let all of you know that we are going to work together. Nobody should say, ‘I am PDP’ or ‘I am APC.’ For the purpose of this election, we are together,” he stated.
As part of the agreement reached at the meeting, PDP candidates contesting National Assembly seats in the FCT declared their support for APC candidates. The coalition also resolved to back Tinubu’s re-election bid and APC candidates for the Senate and House of Representatives, while allowing the respective parties to handle other contests.

Five people have sustained serious injuries after a 40-foot HOWO truck rammed into two commercial buses at Berger Bus Stop, inward Kara Bridge, in Lagos State.
The accident reportedly occurred shortly after 1 p.m. when the truck, travelling from Lagos towards Kara Bridge, suffered brake failure and crashed into the two buses parked by the roadside.
An official of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) at the scene said the driver lost control of the truck after its brakes allegedly failed. The official initially confirmed that no lives were lost, although several people sustained injuries and were taken for emergency medical care.
However, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) later confirmed that five people — three women and two men, including the truck driver — sustained serious injuries in the crash.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, LASTMA disclosed that its operatives rescued the victims and arranged their evacuation to the Lagos State Emergency and Trauma Centre at Toll Gate for immediate medical attention.
Officers from the Isheri Police Station also arrived at the scene to provide security and support the rescue operation.
Following the incident, LASTMA officials cleared the damaged vehicles, including the truck, from the road to prevent further accidents and ease traffic congestion in the area.
The vehicles were subsequently handed over to the police, who are expected to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.

The Nigerian Senate has taken a significant step towards decriminalising attempted suicide, with a bill seeking to protect survivors and provide access to mental health support passing its second reading despite opposition from Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
During the debate, Akpabio expressed concerns that removing criminal penalties could encourage more people to attempt suicide.
“If you attempt suicide, make sure you die. Anyone who attempts and fails will go to jail,” he said, arguing against the proposed change. He also maintained that amendments to the Criminal Code and Penal Code would require input from State Houses of Assembly.
However, the bill, sponsored by Senator Ekpenyong Asuquo, received enough support to advance to the next stage. It was subsequently referred to the Senate Committees on Health and Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters for further consideration.
Speaking in support of the proposed legislation, Asuquo explained that the bill seeks to address the contradiction between existing criminal laws and the National Mental Health Act, which recognises attempted suicide as a psychiatric emergency requiring medical attention.
According to him, Sections 327 of the Criminal Code and 231 of the Penal Code still prescribe punishment for attempted suicide, creating a conflict with the country's approach to mental health care.
“Our law presently speaks with two voices,” the senator said.
He stressed that people who survive suicide attempts need immediate medical attention and psychological support rather than punishment.
“The police station or correctional facility should not be the default destination for a person who requires urgent clinical care,” he added.
Asuquo further warned that criminalising attempted suicide could prevent people experiencing mental health crises from seeking help. He noted that the existing laws could also encourage families to hide such incidents out of fear of prosecution, while worsening the stigma surrounding mental health challenges.
The proposed bill seeks to introduce measures such as crisis response services, medical referrals, psychological support and public education to ensure that survivors receive appropriate care.
Senator Dayo Faduyile also backed the proposal, insisting that attempted suicide should be treated as a medical emergency rather than a criminal offence.
“The best way to treat anybody who did not succumb to a suicide attempt is actually not to criminalise it. They need help,” he said.
Senator Abdul Ningi equally supported further consideration of the bill, while Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele raised questions about its nationwide application, particularly in light of differences in the legal frameworks operating across states.
With the bill now referred to the relevant Senate committees, further deliberations will determine its next steps.

Former gang leader Duane “Keffe D” Davis has been sentenced to 40 years in prison for his role in the 1996 murder of legendary American rapper Tupac Shakur, bringing a major development in one of hip-hop’s most talked-about cases.
The 63-year-old was found guilty in September of murder with a deadly weapon over the drive-by shooting that claimed Tupac’s life in Las Vegas on September 7, 1996. Davis, however, has indicated that he plans to appeal the conviction.
Prosecutors described Davis, a former leader of the South Side Compton Crips street gang, as the mastermind behind the attack. They alleged that he organised the killing and supplied the gun used by his nephew, Orlando Anderson, who was accused of firing the fatal shots at the rapper.
Although Davis was not the person who allegedly pulled the trigger, prosecutors maintained that he played a central role in planning the attack.
Anderson, who denied involvement in Tupac’s murder, was himself killed in an unrelated shooting in 1998.
One of the most significant pieces of evidence against Davis was his own account of the incident. He had repeatedly acknowledged being inside the white Cadillac from which the fatal shots were fired.

A 33-year-old man, identified as Khuslen Saruultuya, is facing an attempted murder charge after allegedly shooting an Uber Eats driver in the buttocks for trying to get his girlfriend’s phone number in Miami, Florida.
According to the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office, the incident happened early Monday morning outside Pearl Dadeland Apartments on North Kendall Drive.
Reports revealed that the delivery driver had brought food to Saruultuya’s girlfriend about an hour earlier. During their brief conversation, the driver reportedly became interested in her and later returned to the apartment complex around 3:25 a.m., hoping to see her again and possibly ask for her phone number.
However, things allegedly took a violent turn when Saruultuya arrived in a Chevrolet Corvette as the driver was making his way back to his car.
According to the arrest report, Saruultuya allegedly pulled out a handgun, ordered the driver to lie on the ground and fired a shot that grazed his right buttock. He then reportedly struck the victim on the back of the head with the gun, leaving him with a two-inch wound.
The situation reportedly escalated further as Saruultuya allegedly ordered the injured driver to stand, pointed the gun at his head and threatened to kill him. His girlfriend was said to have pleaded with him to stop as he chased the victim around the Corvette.
The driver eventually managed to get medical attention at Baptist Health South Miami Hospital.
Investigators reportedly tracked down the Corvette to Saruultuya, who was later arrested after the victim identified him in a photo lineup.
But that was not all. During a search of his apartment, deputies allegedly discovered several illegal drugs, including Xanax, Adderall, oxycodone, amphetamines, ketamine, cocaine, MDMA, psilocybin mushrooms and marijuana. Authorities also reportedly recovered 16 Cialis pills and two bags of a substance known as tusi, sometimes referred to as pink cocaine.
Saruultuya is now facing multiple charges, including attempted murder, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and nine felony drug-trafficking charges.

In a major development in the fight against cybercrime, 120 Nigerian nationals arrested in Ghana during Operation Cyberhunt have been repatriated to the United States, following a joint operation involving local and international intelligence and security agencies.
The operation was led by Ghana’s Cyber Security Authority (CSA), in collaboration with security agencies in Ghana, Nigeria, the United Kingdom and the United States. According to the statement, the operation also uncovered a disturbing human trafficking angle, with the 120 Nigerians reportedly having been trafficked to Ghana and forced to work in cybercrime operations.
During the raid, security operatives seized 136 mobile phones, 130 laptops, internet connectivity devices, four vehicles — including one reportedly stolen from Canada — and other digital equipment. Investigators also recovered valuable jewellery and 10 Nigerian passports.
Meanwhile, authorities are processing eight other individuals for prosecution as investigations continue.
Expressing gratitude to the Ghana Air Force and the Ministry of Defence for their role in facilitating the repatriation, the statement praised the agencies involved for their cooperation and commitment to tackling cybercrime.
Ghana also reaffirmed its determination to crack down on cybercriminal activities, stressing that the country would not be a safe haven for those involved in such operations.
The development highlights the growing need for international cooperation in combating cybercrime and human trafficking, while also raising concerns about the exploitation of vulnerable individuals recruited into criminal networks.

Pope Leo XIV has reportedly been diagnosed with adenocarcinoma, a type of lung cancer, following surgery to remove a nodule from his right lung at Gemelli Hospital in Rome. The development has raised concerns among Catholics and well-wishers around the world, who are praying for the pontiff’s speedy recovery.
The 71-year-old pope, who is not known to have a history of smoking, underwent the procedure under the supervision of Dr Stefano Margaritora, the hospital’s chief thoracic surgeon. According to him, the doctor disclosed that fake chemotherapy drips, allegedly containing nothing more than water, had been discovered being administered to patients.

“I know fake drugs in Nigeria is a problem, but what I heard today from a very reliable doctor, really scared me and made me sad. They found fake chemotherapy drips that was essentially water being administered to patients.”

Nigerian troops have reportedly neutralised more than 40 fighters of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), including a prominent commander, during an air strike in Borno State. In a separate operation in Sokoto State, troops also reportedly killed a suspected Lakurawa militant.
The air strike took place on October 10 at an ISWAP enclave in Badu Village, Guzamala Local Government Area of Borno State, following intelligence reports that the fighters were planning coordinated attacks on military positions.
According to the Acting Military Information Officer of the Northeast Joint Taskforce, Operation Hadin Kai, Captain Mohammed Goni, the operation also destroyed two vehicles and about 20 motorcycles allegedly used by the group for movement and logistics.
Goni disclosed that preliminary intelligence reports and battle damage assessments indicated that more than 40 ISWAP fighters, including a prominent commander, were neutralised during the operation.
He added that the fighters were members of the group's Murabitun unit, which is reportedly responsible for conducting patrols and coordinating attacks.
Meanwhile, in Sokoto State, troops attached to the Forward Operating Base in Binji reportedly neutralised a suspected Lakurawa militant in Soruro Village in the early hours of Monday, October 12.
The operation followed a distress call reporting the presence of armed men in the community at about 5 a.m. Troops reportedly recovered an AK-47 rifle, a magazine and ammunition from the scene.
However, the Sokoto State Police Command gave a different account of the incident. Its spokesperson, DSP Ahmed Rufai, said six armed bandits attacked a resident identified as Dikko Abubakar and killed him, while the other members of the group fled.

Former Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha, has reportedly been arrested by the Nigeria Police Force in Abuja over allegations of criminal conspiracy, forgery and impersonation.
According to reports, the former governor was arrested on Monday night after allegedly failing to honour previous police invitations regarding an ongoing investigation.
The Imo State Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Aniete Iniedu, confirmed the development to Channels Television on Tuesday, October 13.
Iniedu disclosed that Okorocha was released on bail after spending about an hour being questioned by investigators. He was also directed to return to the Force Headquarters on Tuesday for further interrogation.
Police sources revealed that Okorocha was initially invited for questioning on September 2, but the meeting was reportedly rescheduled to September 8 following a request from his lawyers.
However, the former governor allegedly failed to honour the rescheduled invitation, a development that reportedly prompted the police to take further action.
As of the time of filing this report, the police have yet to provide additional details about the allegations against Okorocha, while investigations into the matter are said to be ongoing.]]>
Nigeria has recorded the world’s largest increase in multidimensional poverty, with an additional 17.9 million people falling into poverty between 2021 and 2024, according to the 2026 Global Multidimensional Poverty Index.
The report, jointly published by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative, highlights a worrying reversal of the progress Nigeria made in reducing poverty between 2018 and 2021.
Nigeria’s increase was significantly higher than that of Afghanistan, where an additional 5.3 million people became multidimensionally poor during the country’s latest assessment period.
“In absolute terms, the largest increase in the number of poor people is seen in Nigeria… 17.9 million people became multidimensionally poor,” the report stated.
Unlike conventional poverty measures that focus mainly on income, the Multidimensional Poverty Index considers several aspects of living conditions, including access to healthcare, education, electricity, clean water, sanitation, adequate housing and proper nutrition.
According to the report’s harmonised comparison, Nigeria’s multidimensional poverty rate rose from 33 per cent in 2021 to 38.7 per cent in 2024. The number of people affected also increased from 72.21 million to 90.07 million within the same period.
Meanwhile, Nigeria’s separate 2024 national estimate placed the number of multidimensionally poor people at 113.32 million, representing 48.7 per cent of the country’s population. However, the report noted that this figure was calculated using a different methodology and should not be directly compared with the historical figures.
At the state level, Kebbi, Yobe and Sokoto were identified among the areas with the highest poverty burdens, while Lagos recorded the lowest Multidimensional Poverty Index value.
The report also painted a troubling picture of the global situation, revealing that approximately 1.2 billion people worldwide were living in acute multidimensional poverty, including 617 million children under the age of 18.
The latest findings raise fresh concerns about Nigeria’s poverty crisis and the country’s ability to meet the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal of reducing poverty in all its forms by at least half by 2030.]]>
Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has been appointed as the Osun State coordinator of President Bola Tinubu’s 2027 re-election campaign, despite his membership of the Accord Party.
The appointment was announced in a campaign council list released by the All Progressives Congress (APC). Former Osun State Governor Bisi Akande and former deputy governor Iyiola Omisore were also named as advisers to the campaign council.
The council is scheduled to be inaugurated on Wednesday, October 14, at the Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
Adeleke’s appointment comes after he repeatedly expressed support for Tinubu’s second-term ambition. Ahead of the August 15 Osun governorship election, the governor and the Accord Party leadership endorsed Tinubu as their preferred presidential candidate, citing the need to complete major federal projects, including the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Road and the Sokoto-Badagry Highway.
After winning re-election with 511,067 votes against APC candidate Bola Oyebamiji, Adeleke reiterated his support for the president.
In an interview with Channels Television, the governor, however, denied entering into any political agreement with Tinubu, explaining that his support was based on their shared Yoruba identity and the president’s South-West background.
“I never reached an agreement with Mr President. My support is just based on, he’s a Yoruba man, and he’s from the South-West,” Adeleke said.
The governor also indicated his willingness to work with APC members, including Oyebamiji and former Osun governor Gboyega Oyetola, to support Tinubu’s re-election bid.
“Whenever Mr President, when it’s time for him to campaign and all that, whatever how he wants me to come in, I will do it,” he added.
Meanwhile, Adeleke’s campaign council dismissed suggestions that his endorsement was the result of a political deal, maintaining that his decision was influenced by Tinubu’s performance and ongoing reforms.
However, Oyetola, who currently serves as the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy and remains a prominent APC figure in Osun State, was conspicuously absent from the campaign council list. The party has yet to explain whether he will be given another role in the campaign.

Nigerian singer Brymo has sparked controversy following his strong remarks against Nobel laureate Professor Wole Soyinka, former President Olusegun Obasanjo and Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, Gani Adams, over the issue of cultism in Nigerian higher institutions.
In a video circulating on X (formerly Twitter), the singer appeared to express his anger over the persistent violence and killings allegedly linked to cult clashes, particularly among young people in Yorubaland.
Brymo accused Soyinka and others of pioneering or promoting cultism in Nigerian tertiary institutions, alleging that their influence contributed to a culture that continues to claim the lives of young Nigerians.

The Lagos State High Court sitting in Ikeja has dismissed an application by Euracare Multi-Specialist Hospital seeking to stop the coroner’s inquest into the death of Nkanu Esege, the 21-month-old son of renowned Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and her husband, Ivara Esege.
Delivering her ruling on Monday, Justice Aishat Opesanwo struck out the hospital’s application for writs of Certiorari and Prohibition, describing the suit as being based on a fundamental misunderstanding of the nature and jurisdiction of a coroner’s court.
In her judgment, the judge explained that under Section 15(2) of the Lagos State Coroner’s System Law 2007, an inquest is mandatory in cases involving a death in custody at a medical facility.
She also dismissed the hospital’s argument that the child’s cremation and the absence of his body meant the coroner could no longer proceed with the inquiry. According to the judge, the authority to conduct an inquest depends on where the death occurred, not on whether the deceased’s body is physically available during the proceedings.
Justice Opesanwo further clarified that a coroner’s inquest is primarily a fact-finding process aimed at establishing who died, as well as when, where and how the death occurred. She stressed that it is not a criminal or civil trial designed to determine guilt, assign liability or punish any party.
Nkanu Esege died on January 7, 2026, at Euracare Multi-Specialist Hospital in Lagos. Following the toddler’s death, his parents accused the hospital of medical negligence, alleging that an excessive dose of sedatives and a denial of oxygen contributed to the cardiac arrest that led to his death.
However, the hospital has maintained that the child was brought in critically ill and that the medical team provided care in line with standard medical procedures.
As part of its argument against the inquest, Euracare contended that proceeding without the child’s body for a post-mortem examination could lead to speculative findings and an unnecessary expenditure of public resources.
With the court dismissing the hospital’s application, the coroner’s inquest is now expected to proceed, potentially shedding more light on the circumstances surrounding the young child’s death.

Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has granted amnesty to at least 500 youths who voluntarily renounced cultism as part of efforts to tackle insecurity and restore peace across the state.
The renunciation exercise took place on Monday, October 12, 2026, in Benin City, during an event organised by the Edo State Special Security Squad (ESSS).
Speaking at the event, Okpebholo commended the beneficiaries for abandoning cultism and choosing a new path, but warned that anyone who returned to the practice would face the full weight of the law.
He also called on those still involved in cult activities to take advantage of the government’s amnesty initiative before it is too late.
According to the governor, renouncing cultism was not only a decision to save their own lives but also a way to protect their families and contribute to a safer society.
“You have chosen the right path. You have chosen to save your life. You have also chosen to remove tears from your families’ eyes. You have chosen to save society,” he said.
Okpebholo maintained that his administration would not be intimidated in its fight against criminality, stressing that security agencies had been directed to intensify efforts to arrest cultists, kidnappers and other criminal suspects.
He further warned that no offender would be spared, regardless of their relationship with him, insisting that the law would be applied without fear or favour.
The governor also disclosed that he had the backing of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in his determination to make Edo State safer.
“To our security agencies, there is nothing to fear. We are not afraid to go after cultists. Tell those who are yet to renounce cultism to do so as a matter of urgency because, if we catch any of them, we will have no mercy on them,” he stated.
He added that he had directed the demolition of buildings allegedly used for criminal activities and urged security personnel to remain committed to the fight against insecurity.
“My duty is very clear. The oath I took is to protect the lives of Edo people, and I will carry this out without fear or favour to anybody. Even if that person is my child, I wouldn’t know you at that moment,” the governor said.
Reflecting on the security situation he inherited, Okpebholo claimed that between 300 and 400 people were killed within three months of his assumption of office on November 12, 2024.
He also recalled a period when five people reportedly lost their lives within five days in cult-related violence, describing the deaths as needless.
According to him, his administration was determined to put an end to such killings and ensure that residents could go about their daily activities without fear.
He further warned criminal elements against assuming they could evade arrest, saying security operatives were monitoring activities across the state.
CP Urges Beneficiaries to Embrace Their Second Chance
Also speaking at the event, Edo State Commissioner of Police, Patrick Daaor, described cultism as a dangerous path that often begins with false promises but ends in tragedy.
He noted that many young people had lost their lives and futures to cult-related activities, urging the beneficiaries to make the most of the opportunity to start afresh.
Daaor commended the governor for introducing the amnesty initiative, saying it demonstrated a commitment to protecting the future of young people in the state.
Describing the programme as an opportunity for redemption, he urged the beneficiaries not to take it for granted.
“What you are doing today is unfolding one of the bundles of God’s mercies. Grab this opportunity with both hands. Don’t trifle with it,” the police commissioner said.
He encouraged the repentant youths to remain committed to their decision and avoid any activities that could lead them back into trouble with the law.
Government Targets Safer Environment for Residents and Investors
In his remarks, the Commissioner for Public Safety and Security, Festus Ebea, said the state was becoming increasingly hostile to criminal activities while remaining open to investors and legitimate businesses.
He praised the beneficiaries for their decision to abandon cultism and urged them to become positive influences in their communities.
Ebea also called on them to support the state government’s campaign against cultism, kidnapping and other criminal activities, stressing that their involvement could help promote lasting peace.
He added that reducing insecurity would create a safer environment for small business owners and major investors to operate without fear of intimidation or violence.
Earlier, the Coordinator of the Edo State Special Security Squad, Noah Idemudia, said the outfit had recorded progress in the fight against crime since its establishment, attributing its achievements to the governor’s support and determination to address insecurity.
He maintained that the political will provided by the state government had helped the squad confront security challenges more directly.
The amnesty programme is part of the state government’s broader efforts to encourage individuals involved in cultism to abandon the practice while strengthening enforcement against those who continue to engage in criminal activities.
