No fewer than eight people have been killed following a clash between farmers and herders in Gulma town, Argungu Local Government Area of Kebbi State.
The violence reportedly erupted after a herder allegedly stabbed a farmer to death on his farmland, triggering a reprisal attack by members of the farming community on Fulani settlements in the area.
Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, SP Bashir Usman, said the clash occurred at about 3 p.m. on Monday and claimed eight lives.
“The incident was a reprisal attack following the stabbing of a farmer by a herder. We are currently in control of the situation, and eight people lost their lives,” he said.
Usman said security operatives rescued four persons during the violence and took them to hospital for treatment, adding that they had since been discharged.
He said normalcy had been restored in the area, while security personnel had been deployed to maintain law and order.
The police spokesman urged residents to remain peaceful, cooperate with security agencies and avoid taking the law into their own hands.
A source familiar with the incident said the crisis stemmed from a dispute between the deceased farmer and the herder over a cow whose leg was allegedly broken while the farmer was trying to chase the animals away from his farmland.

The Birnin Gwari Emirate Progressives Union (BEPU), has expressed sorrow, grave concern and condemned in strong terms the brutal killing of six innocent farmers by armed bandits on Monday, 22 June 2026, at Kujijiro farmlands in Kuyello District of Birnin Gwari Local Government Area.
Dr Isah Muhammad, Chairman, Birnin Gwari Emirate Progressives Union (BEPU), in a statement issued on Tuesday and made available to DAILY POST said, “The victims were mercilessly attacked and killed while carrying out their lawful farming activities.
“This tragic incident has once again thrown the entire Birnin Gwari community into grief and fear. It is particularly disturbing because Kuyello and other communities in Eastern Birnin Gwari have continued to suffer attacks, killings and other criminal activities despite ongoing efforts to restore peace in the area.”
BEPU believed that the continued attacks on innocent farmers and rural communities pose a serious threat to the peace and stability that the people of Birnin Gwari have worked hard to achieve, saying that no part of Birnin Gwari should be left behind in the search for lasting peace.
He stressed that Birnin Gwari is one community with a shared history and a common future, pointing out that whether in the East, West or Central parts of the Emirate, the pain of one community is the pain of all.
“As long as any part of Birnin Gwari remains unsafe, true peace cannot be said to exist. We are deeply worried that if urgent and decisive action is not taken to stop these attacks, many farmers may become afraid to return to their farms this season. Such a situation will not only affect Birnin Gwari but may also lead to reduced food production, higher food prices and economic difficulties across Kaduna State and other parts of Northern Nigeria,” he explained.
BEPU called on the Federal and the Kaduna State Governments to take immediate and practical steps to eliminate criminal groups that have ignored peace and continue to terrorise innocent citizens.
It also appealed to the Minister of Defence, the National Security Adviser, the Nigerian Armed Forces, the Nigeria Police Force and all other security agencies to intensify security operations in Kuyello and the wider Eastern Birnin Gwari area, saying that the people deserve to live in peace, work on their farms and carry out their daily activities without fear.
The Union urged the Kaduna State Government to give greater attention to the security challenges facing Eastern Birnin Gwari by strengthening security presence and providing the necessary support to protect lives and property.
According to the statement, “Our hearts go out to the families of those who lost their loved ones in this painful attack. We pray that God grants eternal rest to the deceased and gives their families the strength to bear this great loss.”
The statement also appealed to the people of Birnin Gwari, especially farmers and community members, to remain calm, united and law-abiding, by encouraging everyone to continue cooperating with security agencies by providing useful information that can help in tackling insecurity.

The Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has restated his government’s commitment to working with the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Dis to improve the security architecture in the state.
The Governor also expressed the willingness of his administration to deepen collaboration with the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies for joint operations and sustain efforts to addressing security challenges in the south west of the country.

Governor Sanwo-Olu, who was represented by his Chief of Staff, Mr. Tayo Ayinde, said the Lagos State Government takes security with utmost seriousness, stating that the State remains the safest across the country.

Former Delta State Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa, on Monday visited the Lagos office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, in connection with an ongoing investigation into the alleged diversion of about N1.3 trillion.
According to Channels Television, Okowa was at the EFCC office on Awolowo Road, Ikoyi, Lagos, over allegations involving 13 per cent derivation funds that accrued to Delta State from the Federation Account between 2015 and 2023.
The former governor had earlier been arrested on November 4, 2024, and questioned by EFCC operatives at the commission’s Port Harcourt Zonal Directorate over the same allegations.
Okowa, who governed Delta State from 2015 to 2023, reportedly appeared at the Lagos office of the anti-graft agency to seek the release of his passport to enable him to travel abroad for medical treatment.
It was not immediately clear whether the EFCC granted his request.

The Adamawa State Police Command has arrested 57 suspects in a sustained crackdown on Shilla gangsterism, drug abuse, public nuisance and other criminal activities across the state.
The operation was carried out under the leadership of the Commissioner of Police, Kabiru Umar Hassan.
In a statement, the command’s spokesperson, Suleiman Yahaya Nguroje, said the suspects had been charged to court.
According to him, the arrests were made during a coordinated operation targeting identified criminal hideouts and black spots within the Jimeta and Yola metropolitan areas.
“The operation, which was carried out by Divisional Police Officers under the supervision of their Area Commanders, yielded positive results with the arrest of 57 suspects for offences bordering on Shilla-related activities, public nuisance, possession of dangerous weapons and involvement with prohibited substances,” the statement said.
The police spokesperson disclosed that operatives recovered various dangerous weapons and suspected banned substances from the suspects during the exercise.
He added that all exhibits recovered had been documented and would be tendered as evidence during prosecution.
Nguroje said the suspects had been arraigned in court in accordance with the law, while profiling and further investigations were ongoing to determine their possible involvement in other criminal activities.
The Commissioner of Police commended officers who participated in the operation for their professionalism and dedication, assuring residents that the command remained committed to dismantling criminal gangs and maintaining peace across the state.

Operatives of the Lagos State Police Command have arrested a 22-year-old suspect, identified as Onipede Ojo, for allegedly stealing a police officer’s bag containing a camouflage uniform, warrant card, mobile phone, ATM card and other personal belongings, and using the items to impersonate a police officer.
The command disclosed that the suspect allegedly wore the stolen police camouflage uniform in an attempt to pass himself off as a serving officer.
In a video that circulated on X, formerly Twitter, Ojo claimed he found the uniform, bearing the name tag of an inspector identified as Jimoh Weheed, along Maryland Road in Lagos.
According to the police, vigilant residents became suspicious after observing that the suspect’s behaviour and mannerisms did not correspond with those of a genuine police officer.
The suspicion prompted members of the public to question him, leading to the discovery that he was allegedly impersonating a police officer.
The suspect was subsequently handed over to the police for further investigation.
The Lagos State Police Command said Ojo is currently in custody and that investigations are ongoing. It added that he would be charged to court upon the conclusion of the investigation.
While commending residents for their vigilance and civic responsibility, the command condemned all forms of jungle justice and warned against taking the law into one’s own hands, regardless of the offence allegedly committed.
The police stressed that the laws of Lagos State do not permit extrajudicial punishment and urged residents to hand over suspects to law enforcement agencies for proper investigation and prosecution.

The Nigerian Navy has uncovered 63,290 litres of suspected illegally refined petroleum products and intercepted a vehicle allegedly linked to an illicit fuel distribution network in Rivers State, in a fresh breakthrough in its ongoing campaign against oil theft.
The operation, carried out under Operation Delta Sentinel, was triggered by actionable intelligence on the movement and storage of suspected illegally refined products within the Orashi Forest corridor in Abua-Odual Local Government Area.
Director of Naval Information, Navy Captain Abiodun Folorunsho, disclosed in a statement that personnel of Nigerian Navy Ship NNS SOROH were deployed to the Okolomade Community axis following credible intelligence on the activities of suspected illegal petroleum operators in the area.
He said the naval team intercepted a silver Toyota Camry suspected to have been used to ferry illegally refined Automotive Gas Oil, with a search of the vehicle yielding 17 sacks of the suspected product.
Personnel subsequently expanded the operation into the surrounding area, uncovering additional stockpiles concealed beneath dense vegetation at multiple locations within the forest corridor, including 56 more sacks of suspected illegally refined AGO hidden across different points.
In total, the operation resulted in the recovery of 73 sacks containing an estimated 63,290 litres of suspected illegally refined AGO, along with the vehicle believed to have been used for transportation.
The Navy said the discovery highlighted the increasing use of forest corridors and concealed storage sites by criminal networks seeking to move illegally refined petroleum products from remote areas into mainstream distribution channels, and that the operation had effectively disrupted a critical segment of the illicit supply chain.
Captain Folorunsho stated that the recovered products were handled in accordance with extant regulations, while the vehicle was secured for further necessary action.

Troops of Operation Hadin Kai have rescued 47 persons, mostly women and children, from captivity in an Islamic State West Africa Province enclave in Kangarwa, Kukawa Local Government Area of Borno State, in an operation conducted on June 20.
The Acting Military Information Officer, Headquarters Joint Task Force North-East Operation Hadin Kai, Captain Mohammed Goni, disclosed this in a statement on Monday, saying the victims regained their freedom following sustained military offensives against t3rrorist hideouts in the Lake Chad region.
According to Goni, the rescue was made possible through intensified ground and air assaults on ISWAP strongholds, which forced the insurgents to abandon their positions in confusion, enabling the victims to escape from prolonged captivity.
The rescued persons are currently receiving medical attention at a secure location, with humanitarian support being provided in coordination with relevant agencies to facilitate their eventual reintegration.
Goni said the rescue underscored the military's commitment to protecting civilians and degrading t3rrorist networks operating in the North-East, and affirmed that operations aimed at dismantling remaining ISWAP cells and restoring peace to the region would continue.

The management of veteran Fuji musician Kollington Ayinla has denied reports circulating online claiming that the singer has died.
According to Tribune Online, the denial was contained in a statement issued on Saturday and signed by Shamsudeen Ilori on behalf of the family and the HSKA Foundation.
The statement described the reports as false, malicious and misleading.
“Our attention has been drawn to a malicious and unfounded rumour circulating all over the internet claiming that Kollington Ayinla Fuji Authority has passed away,” the statement said.
The management maintained that the veteran musician, popularly known as Kebe-n-Kwara, is alive and in good health.
“Alhaji Kollington Ayinla is alive, well and in good health. Baba is currently enjoying himself, surrounded by family and close associates,” the statement added.
According to the statement, the rumour was fabricated by individuals seeking attention and online traffic.
The management also urged the public to verify information before sharing it and warned against spreading unconfirmed reports on social media.
“Spreading false death news is not content — it’s wickedness,” the statement said.
The statement further warned that those found to have created or deliberately spread the false report could face legal consequences.
This is not the first time the veteran Fuji musician has been forced to deny reports of his death.
In 2024, he publicly dismissed a similar rumour while receiving treatment at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) following a health challenge.

Death toll from Sunday night’s attack on Kawel village in Mushere Chiefdom of Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State has reportedly risen to 30, as some of the injured victims succumbed to their injuries while receiving treatment in the hospital.
Community leaders and residents have also reported that some of the victims include health workers and security personnel who were also caught in the crossfire during the attack.
Residents said the attack was carried out by suspected Fulani militias who invaded the village in their hundreds and attacked the residents who had already retired for the night.
A youth leader in Bokkos LGA, Christopher Luka, who spoke with journalists earlier in the day, also confirmed that the death toll had risen following fresh assessments.
“I visited the hospital and saw the situation myself. So far, 22 deaths have been recorded, including women. The victims are yet to be buried because of the rainfall experienced since morning,” Luka said.
He also confirmed that the victims included health workers serving at the hospital and some patients who were receiving treatment.
The Chairman of the Community Peace Observers in Bokkos LGA, Kefas Mallai, also confirmed the rise in the death toll, saying as at Monday afternoon, not less than 25 people had been certified dead following the attack.
According to Mallai, the impact of the attack would have been less if security personnel had arrived on time. He lamented that despite frantic calls, security operatives did not come on time to tackle the invaders.
Mallai also accused security agencies of inaction despite prior intelligence, alleging that attackers operate from nearby occupied communities.
“The criminals left without being apprehended, but the security agents are now scattered in the bushes looking for whether they can arrest any of the perpetrators,” he said.
Also confirming the development, the Plateau State Police Command said the command has already commenced an investigation into the incident, while a manhunt is on to apprehend the fleeing bandits.
“The Plateau State Police Command is deeply saddened to confirm an attack on Kawel Community, Mushere District, Bokkos Local Government Area, in the early hours of Sunday, 21st June 2026, at about 04:40am, by a group of armed hoodlums,” the Police statement signed by the In a statement issued by the state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Alfred Alabo, said.
“Upon receipt of the information, the Commissioner of Police,e Plateau State Command, CP Bassey Ewah, immediately directed the Divisional Police Officer, Bokkos Division, to mobilise police personnel to the scene.
“The team, in collaboration with operatives of the command’s Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) and other sister security agencies, engaged the assailants in a fierce gun battle, forcing them to retreat.
“Regrettably, eighteen (18) persons were confirmed dead at the scene of the attack, while three (3) others were rushed to the hospital for medical attention.
“Subsequently, two (2) of the injured victims were confirmed dead by a medical doctor, bringing the total number of casualties to twenty (20).
“The remains of the victims have since been released to their families for burial, as the families declined an autopsy,” Alabo said.]]>
Former President of the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor, has said Nigeria’s current challenges did not start under President Bola Tinubu, recalling that he warned the country as far back as 2014 about the direction it was heading.
Oritsejafor, who spoke on Channels Television’s Politics Today, said he foresaw trouble before the administration of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari came into office in 2015.
According to him, the country has moved from one level of crisis to another since then.
“In 2014, I tried to warn this nation of the direction it was going, when the Buhari government was getting ready to come in, I knew that it was going to be a mess,” he said.
“From there, I don’t know what to call where we are now; it has grown worse.”
The former CAN president said his decision to speak out again was informed by the hardship facing Nigerians and the need to hold leaders accountable.
He said, “It has gotten to a point where I feel I have to say something, I must begin to say something because I pastor people, they are human beings, Nigerians, and we must begin to hold people accountable for what is happening.”
Oritsejafor also explained why he had stayed away from public political commentary for years, saying repeated warnings to Nigerians were ignored.
“I kept quiet because sometimes when you talk to people, when you try to make them understand that what is happening, and what’s going to happen, is going to be terrible, and you try, and try and then no one seems to be listening, the best thing is to withdraw,” he said.
“You can’t force people to listen to you, you can’t force people to take your advice, you can’t force people to follow what you’re saying.”
The cleric said he had continued to watch developments in the country from the sidelines until he decided that the time had come for him to speak again.
“So I decided to step aside, but, like I said, I’ve watched the events, just from one level to another until we got to where we are now, and I think this is the time for me to begin to say something,” he added.
Oritsejafor, however, said the average Nigerian was struggling with hope under the present economic situation.
“The average Nigerian today has no hope, except if you say you look up to God to give you hope,” he said.
He added that President Tinubu would have to decide whether to seek another term in 2027, but warned that Nigerians would expect a clear change in the country’s direction before then.
“So, I would leave President Tinubu to make that choice himself. One thing I can say categorically is, look, don’t begin to dream of coming back to continue this same mess,” he said.]]>

Panic erupted at the Shoe Materials Market in Mushin, Lagos, on Monday after an improvised expl%sive device concealed beneath a vehicle detonated, leaving one person inj¥red.
Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Fatai Tijani, who visited the scene, assured residents and traders that the situation had been brought under control following a thorough operation by security personnel.
He said officers from the Expl%sive Ordnance Disposal unit were immediately deployed after reports of the expl%sion reached the command, and that the area was secured and extensively searched.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the device had been hidden beneath the passenger side of a vehicle and detonated when the engine was started.
The inj¥red victim was rushed to hospital and is reported to be in stable condition.
Tijani stated that EOD experts conducted a detailed sweep of the area and confirmed that no additional expl%sive devices were found, adding that fragments of the device had been recovered and forwarded for forensic analysis as investigations continue.
He urged residents to disregard rumours suggesting a rise in insecurity across Lagos, maintaining that the state remains safe, and warned cr+minal elements to steer clear of the state.
The Baale of Oke Mushin Community, Tajudeen Faronbi, said he was alerted to the suspicious vehicle around 1 a.m. while observing prayers.
On arriving at the scene, he found residents too frightened to approach the vehicle and immediately notified security authorities, prompting the deployment of approximately 35 police officers, with additional personnel later arriving to secure the area and keep residents at a safe distance.

Mr Onanuga said Nigeria operated a presidential system of government, unlike the parliamentary system in the United Kingdom, making calls for resignation outside constitutional processes inappropriate.
He said that Mr Tinubu was elected for a fixed four-year term and should be assessed by voters during the next presidential election rather than through social media campaigns.
According to him, recent electoral victories recorded by the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ekiti and senatorial elections in Nasarawa, Enugu, Ondo and Rivers states indicate continued public support.
“Obi should wait until the presidential election to know what the people think of Tinubu’s government. Moving to use X to harangue the President out of office is off the mark and anti-democratic,” he said.
On security, Mr Onanuga said Mr Tinubu inherited longstanding challenges but had recorded measurable progress through intensified military operations and increased investments in national security infrastructure.
He said hundreds of kidnapped victims had been rescued, while more than 15,000 terrorists had been neutralised through sustained operations conducted across various parts of the country.
According to him, the administration has expanded security investments through the deployment of advanced technologies, drones and the appointment of a Special Adviser on Homeland Security.
“It is laughable that Obi, who, as governor, was a colossal failure, unable to secure lives and property in his small state of Anambra, is now calling for President Tinubu’s resignation over security breaches in some parts of the country,” he said.
On the economy, Mr Onanuga said Mr Obi’s description of Nigeria as being in its worst condition ignored available economic indicators and international recognition of ongoing reforms.
He recalled that Mr Tinubu inherited what he described as a “dead horse economy” and introduced reforms that previous administrations had reportedly avoided implementing for years.
According to him, Nigeria has recorded positive Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth every quarter since 2023, while trade surpluses and foreign reserves have continued to improve.
He said oil production had risen from less than one million barrels per day to about 1.8 million barrels daily, while federation revenue was projected to exceed N30 trillion in 2026.
Mr Onanuga added that N15.7 trillion had already been generated by May 2026, more than double the total revenue recorded in 2022, boosting development efforts by sub-national governments.
He said the stock market had witnessed significant growth, with the All-Share Index rising from about 50,000 points to more than 250,000 points over the period.
According to him, the naira exchange rate has stabilised, while foreign direct and portfolio investments have reached record levels, particularly within the oil and gas sector.
The presidential aide also highlighted infrastructure projects, including the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway and Sokoto-Badagry Superhighway, as evidence of the administration’s development agenda.
He said Mr Tinubu had also promoted the adoption of compressed natural gas (CNG) and facilitated interest-free education loans for nearly two million Nigerian students.
On industrial harmony, Mr Onanuga said tertiary institutions had recorded no major disruptions from unions such as ASUU and NASU in the last three years.
Addressing electricity supply, he said critics had consistently misrepresented Mr Tinubu’s campaign remarks, noting that the president signed the Electricity Act to decentralise the power sector.
He added that the administration had rolled out millions of prepaid meters, expanded off-grid solar projects and was addressing transmission and pricing challenges to attract investment.
While acknowledging the high cost of living, Mr Onanuga attributed part of the economic pressure to global developments, including tensions in the Middle East and supply chain disruptions.
He described Mr Obi’s resignation call as a political distraction, insisting that Tinubu remained focused on reforms, economic stability, improved security and long-term national development.

The Delta State Government has dismissed reports suggesting it invited the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to screen civil servants in the state, clarifying that the anti-graft agency initiated the exercise as part of a nationwide investigation into public sector payroll systems.
The clarification was made on Monday by the Delta State Head of Service, Mrs. Mininim Oseji, during a press briefing in Asaba while unveiling activities lined up for the 2026 Civil Service Week celebration themed, “Reforms, Resilience and Results.”
According to Oseji, the EFCC formally requested access to payroll records and nominal rolls from selected Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) as part of efforts to identify and eliminate ghost workers within the public service.
She explained that upon receiving the agency’s request, she forwarded the correspondence to Governor Sheriff Oborevwori for guidance.
“When the EFCC delivered the letter requesting that they wanted to screen some MDAs, I forwarded it to His Excellency, the governor, and sought guidance on our response,” she said.
Oseji disclosed that the governor directed the state government to cooperate fully with the exercise, emphasizing that Delta State had nothing to conceal.
“The governor instructed us to grant the request and cooperate fully. A senior government official was subsequently assigned to coordinate the exercise and facilitate engagement between the EFCC team and the affected MDAs,” she added.
The Head of Service stressed that the screening should not be viewed as a punitive action but rather as a transparency measure aimed at strengthening public confidence in the civil service.
She revealed that her office was among those selected for verification and noted that she personally participated in the exercise despite suggestions that she could be exempted.
“As the number one civil servant in the state, I wanted to lead by example. I presented my letter of first appointment, relevant documents, and my most recent appointment letter. The officials were satisfied with the documentation,” Oseji stated.

Supporters of human rights activist and former African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, have accused operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) of forcefully arresting and injuring him despite a court order directing that he be remanded in a correctional facility.
The allegation followed a ruling by Justice Mohammed Umar, who ordered that Sowore be remanded at the Kuje Correctional Centre pending the hearing of his application seeking a stay of execution of an earlier order that revoked his bail.
The judge also declined Sowore’s request that he recuse himself from the case over allegations of bias and subsequently adjourned proceedings until June 24, 2026.
Tension erupted shortly after the ruling, as Sowore’s supporters alleged that DSS operatives seized him within the court premises and attempted to take him into their custody, contrary to the court’s directive. They further claimed that the activist sustained injuries during the incident.
A video streamed live on Sowore’s Facebook page showed a DSS operative grabbing him by the waist and dragging him away while other security personnel prevented supporters from intervening.

Before being taken away, Sowore told supporters he was not surprised by the court’s decision, stating that he had anticipated the outcome.
“Nobody should be surprised. I have predicted before now that all these things would happen. But they are happening for a good reason: somebody must make the sacrifice that will liberate this country,” he said.
“I am going to prison, but I will be out. And when I am out, I will be stronger, more ferocious, and face these people headlong. That is my message to the Nigerian people.”
The DSS is prosecuting Sowore in an alleged criminal defamation case linked to social media posts in which he reportedly referred to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as “a criminal.”
Sowore has pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Nigerians living in South Africa on Monday staged a protest at the Nigerian High Commission in Pretoria over delays in the federal government's evacuation programme for citizens seeking to return home.
The demonstration comes just days after Nigeria's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, assured Nigerians in South Africa that the government would not abandon anyone willing to return to the country.

"As you know, only one flight left. The question is, when is the second batch? When is the third batch? When is the fourth batch?" Nwobu said.
"We were promised that the second batch would be here on the 15th of June. The 15th has come and gone. People were made destitute and their conditions worsened."
According to him, many Nigerians who registered for the voluntary return programme are now facing severe hardship.
"Nigerians are now sleeping on the street, and their documents have been cancelled as a result of that registration," he lamented.
Nwobu explained that the protest was aimed at drawing the attention of the Nigerian authorities to the plight of those still awaiting evacuation.
He stressed that the affected citizens want the repatriation exercise completed before the June 30 deadline and urged the government to urgently arrange additional flights.
"We are appealing to the government. That is why they are here; to show their frustration and that they are not happy with the situation," he said.

Governor Uba Sani has ended 20 years of hardship in Giwa local government, with the reconstruction of the Store Bridge along the Marabar Yakawada–Kaya Road which has also revived the local economy.
Residents of the local government who gave testimonies of the Governor’s peoples-oriented projects in the area, told journalists that the bridge has revived agricultural, commercial and social activities across communities that were previously cut off during the rainy season.
Speaking to journalists who are on media tour, they commended Governor Uba Sani’s rural transformation drive, describing the bridge as a critical lifeline that has restored access to markets, healthcare facilities and farmlands.
Malam Shehu Muharazu, a commercial driver from Kaya village, who spoke to the journalists, noted that motorists and commuters faced enormous challenges before the bridge was reconstructed.
He recalled that the collapsed bridge made movement extremely difficult during the rainy season, disrupting economic activities and isolating communities for extended periods.
According to him, the local government is predominantly agrarian, adding that farming activities often slowed to a halt whenever heavy rains rendered the route impassable.
Shehu pointed out that the road serves as a strategic link between the southern and northern parts of Giwa local government and also provides access to neighbouring communities in Katsina State.
“Whenever the rains came, transporting passengers and goods to the major market in Giwa was a nightmare. In many cases, we had to travel through Sabuwa and Funtua in Katsina State to reach our destination, increasing fuel costs and exposing us to additional risks.
“The situation affected our income because transportation costs became too high and many people avoided travelling,” he said.
A farmer and resident of Marabar Yakawada, Malam Ibrahim Muhammadu, said the failed bridge frequently left farmers who were returning from their farms, stranded.
“After a day’s work, you could get to the bridge and discover that rainfall upstream had made it impossible to cross. Many people spent hours waiting for the water level to subside before continuing their journey,” he recalled.
Another resident, Mallam Muhammad Aminu of Gadagau community, said the collapsed bridge had severe consequences for healthcare delivery in the area.
According to him, referrals from Primary Healthcare Centres in communities around Gadagau and Maraban Fatika were often delayed or disrupted, contributing to avoidable maternal and infant deaths.
“The reconstruction of this bridge has significantly improved access to emergency healthcare services and reduced the challenges faced by pregnant women and other vulnerable residents,” he said.

Following an Abuja Federal High Court order remanding activist Omoyele Sowore at the Kuje Correctional Centre, a tense exchange occurred between the activist and operatives of the Department of State Services, DSS, in the premises of the court.
In a video circulating online, Sowore is seen resisting attempts by DSS operatives to transport him in a Black Maria van.
“What did I do? Do you want to put me in a Black Maria? We can get an Uber because I will not enter this car because of my back.
“Even if you want the guests to follow us, let them provide another vehicle. I will follow them, but don’t put me in a Black Maria,” Sowore said during the encounter.

Muslim Rights Concern, MURIC, has advised the management of University of Jos to stop fixing programmes during the period of Jummah prayer on Fridays.
MURIC made the suggestion in a statement signed by its Executive Director, Professor Ishaq Akintola, on Monday.
Akintola noted that the Department of Pharmacy, Jos University Teaching Hospital, JUTH, allegedly slated a lecture on Lassa fever for Friday, 26th June, 2026 between 12 – 2 pm.
He declared the timing of the lecture as provocative and illegal, adding that it is a stumbling block in the path to peaceful coexistence.
Akintola maintained that the institution should review the programme to ensure that the Jumu’ah period is neither encroached upon nor sandwiched.
Akintola said, “An internal memo allegedly emanating from the Department of Pharmacy, Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH), has reportedly slated a lecture on Lassa fever for Friday, 26th June, 2026 by 12 – 2 pm. The memo was signed by Sitlong Goodness on behalf of the chairman of the Medical Advisory Committee (MAC).
“We of the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) regard the timing of the proposed lecture as an over-reach. Holding a programme in official capacity during Jumu’ah prayer anywhere in Nigeria is an exercise in illegality. The idea is not only provocative but a stumbling block in the path to peaceful coexistence.

President Bola Tinubu has appointed Professor Oluwatoyin Temitayo Ogundipe as the new Chairman of the Governing Board of the National Universities Commission (NUC).
The appointment was announced on Monday in a statement issued by presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga.
Ogundipe succeeds Emeritus Professor Olufemi Raphael Aina, who resigned from the position less than a year after his appointment. Aina had been appointed by President Tinubu in July 2025, while members of the NUC Governing Board were inaugurated in November 2025.
A distinguished botanist and academic administrator, Ogundipe served as Vice-Chancellor of University of Lagos from 2017 to 2022. He currently serves as Pro-Chancellor of Redeemer’s University.
The 66-year-old scholar holds a PhD in Botany from Obafemi Awolowo University and an MBA from the University of Lagos. His academic expertise spans molecular plant taxonomy, biosystematics, ethnobotany, cytogenetics, forensic botany, and ecological conservation.
Ogundipe is a fellow of several prestigious professional bodies, including the Nigerian Academy of Science, the Linnean Society of London, and the Royal Society of Biology. He has also served as President of the Botanical Society of Nigeria and Chairman of the Lagos State Science, Research and Innovation Council.
As Chairman of the NUC Governing Board, Ogundipe is expected to provide strategic leadership in the regulation and development of Nigeria’s university system, focusing on improved funding, academic stability, quality assurance, and global competitiveness.

Human rights lawyer and activist Deji Adeyanju on Monday testified before the Federal High Court in Abuja in the ongoing trial of former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, who is facing charges bordering on alleged breach of national security.
Adeyanju appeared as the second prosecution witness before Justice Joyce Abdulmalik, following a subpoena issued by the court.
The Department of State Security (DSS) had instituted the case against El-Rufai over comments he made during a television interview, in which he alleged that he intercepted a telephone conversation involving the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu.
According to El-Rufai, the alleged conversation contained directives to security operatives to arrest him following his return from Cairo, Egypt, on February 12.
During proceedings, prosecution counsel Oluwole Aladedoye, SAN, tendered the subpoena issued to Adeyanju, which was admitted by the court as Exhibit G without objection from the defence.
While giving evidence, Adeyanju told the court that reports had circulated on February 12 suggesting that El-Rufai could either be arrested or invited for questioning by security agencies.
He recalled appearing on an Arise Television programme on February 13, shortly after El-Rufai had been interviewed on the same platform.
“I went to Arise, and El-Rufai was also on the show. My segment came after his. During his interview, I listened to him speak on many issues, and I countered many of the things he said because they were not true or were half-truths,” Adeyanju told the court.
At the prosecution’s request, the court replayed the television interview earlier admitted as evidence during the testimony of the first prosecution witness.
Adeyanju confirmed that the recording accurately reflected what transpired during the broadcast.
The prosecution also tendered a flash drive containing Adeyanju’s interview alongside a certificate of compliance. Both were admitted as Exhibits H and H1.
In the recorded interview played in court, Adeyanju dismissed claims that security agencies intended to arrest El-Rufai at the airport.
“If they wanted to arrest him, they would have done so at the airport,” he said in the interview.
He further maintained that El-Rufai’s appearance on a security watch list explained why operatives met him upon arrival.
“So once your name is there, the first thing is to confiscate the passport,” he stated.
Adeyanju also argued that allegations of persecution against the former governor should be viewed against actions taken during El-Rufai’s tenure as governor.
“The oppressor of yesterday cannot suddenly become the hero of today,” he said, while referencing the demolition of properties allegedly belonging to political opponents during El-Rufai’s administration.
According to him, El-Rufai should be investigated for alleged corruption before any prosecution is initiated.
During cross-examination, defence counsel Paul Erokoro, SAN, questioned whether Adeyanju heard El-Rufai explicitly state that he tapped any telephone conversation.
Responding, Adeyanju said, “El-Rufai said, ‘We listened to their calls.’”
He added that if someone claimed a phone conversation had been hacked, he would report such information because he lacked knowledge of how the alleged hacking occurred.
Adeyanju further told the court that he only appeared to testify because he was summoned and had no option but to comply.
Justice Abdulmalik subsequently adjourned the case until June 23 for continuation of trial proceedings.]]>
The South East Progressives Forum, SEPF, has criticized the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, Peter Obi, for initiating a N5 billion defamation lawsuit against his former spokesman and ally, Kenneth Okonkwo.
The Forum, in a statement signed by head of its media unit, Paul Anigbogu, on Monday, accused the former Anambra State governor of attempting to intimidate and silence Okonkwo for leaving him to align with another presidential candidate.
Recall that Obi’s lawyers, led by Alex Ejesieme, SAN had sent a pre-action notice to Okonkwo on June 9, 2026, accusing him of making malicious and defamatory remarks against the NDC presidential candidate.
Obi’s lawyers who claimed that the remarks made by Okonkwo damaged the reputation of their client, threatened to file N5 billion defamation lawsuit against the former Nollywood if he failed to withdraw his allegations against the NDC presidential candidate, pay N5 billion compensation and tender a public apology within seven days.
Replying through his own lawyers, Okonkwo said he would not retract his words, maintaining that he spoke after receiving briefs from NDC aspirants who were defrauded and extorted by the NDC caucus headed by Obi.
Speaking on the development, SEPF lambasted the NDC presidential candidate for parading himself on the one hand as a democrat, but on the other hand, overly sensitive and easily offended when criticized by opponents.
According to the group, the threat by Obi to sue his former spokesman for N5 billion has shown his phobia for criticism and deep aversion for democratic values, especially freedom of expression.
Condemning Obi’s latest move to sue Okonkwo, SEPF recalled that he has an infamous history of threatening legal action against persons who criticize him, including media houses.
Parts of the statement read, “In April 2023, he issued instructions to his lawyers against a media house over leaked audio recording of his phone call with Bishop David Oyedepo. This was not the only time that he did so.
“In 2025, he also threatened and subsequently pursued a N1.5 billion lawsuit against lawyer/ activist, Deji Adeyanju, alleging that Deji used his social media platforms to publish false, baseless, unfounded, malicious, reckless and scandalous comments against him.
“Obi has thin-skin for criticism. He criticizes others, but does not want to be criticized. What sort of democrat is that? He is simply a demagogue. He wants to gain power by appealing to people’s emotions, prejudices and fears, rather than by using rational arguments or factual evidence.
“Kenneth Okonkwo did not just speak, people briefed him. Nigerians are not blind. Nigerians witnessed the transactional primary elections conducted by NDC across the country, particularly in the South East. The NDC tickets were for the highest bidder. The news is all over the media. Obi thinks that he can make Kenneth Okonkwo the scapegoat, but we will not tolerate that.”
The Forum warned Obi to allow Kenneth Okonkwo be, or else, it would start revealing to Nigerians one after the other, all his autocratic antecedents the only time he held public office in Nigeria as the Governor of Anambra State for eight years.
“We will say everything, including how he stifled grassroots democracy by refusing to conduct local government election and ran the councils with his cronies as caretaker committees until three months to his exit from office,” SEPF stated.]]>
The Ogun State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of “growing anxiety” over the political influence of its candidate, Oladipupo Adebutu, ahead of the 2027 governorship election.
The party asserted that Ogun residents are ready for a new direction and that no amount of propaganda can “stop the winds of change already blowing across the state.”
This was contained in a statement issued on Sunday by the Ogun PDP Youth Leader, Comrade Lukman Ejalonibu.
Ejalonibu insisted that the recent comments by the Special Assistant on Youth Development to Ogun State Governor, Comrade Olamide Lawal, about Adebutu exposed contradictions in the ruling party’s position.
Recall that Olamide Lawal, while speaking on a television programme, said Adebutu is not a threat to the APC and lacks the political strength and performance record required to challenge the ruling party in the state.
Lawal also noted that the state’s prevailing zoning considerations diminish any prospect of Adebutu succeeding Governor Dapo Abiodun.
Responding, the PDP youth leader argued that the APC’s focus on Adebutu confirms his “growing popularity, acceptance and connection with the people of Ogun State.”
He said, “It is both amusing and contradictory that the same APC which claims Adebutu is ‘not a threat’ continues to devote so much time and energy to discussing him. No political party spends valuable airtime attacking an opponent it considers irrelevant.”
Ejalonibu also faulted attempts to downplay Adebutu’s record as a former member of the House of Representatives, citing his constituency interventions, educational support programmes, youth empowerment and community projects.
He described Adebutu as “an authentic son of Ogun State whose roots, commitment and contributions to the state are well known,” adding that his relationship with the people predates his electoral ambitions.
He asserted that the PDP’s focus remains on providing credible alternatives and mobilising the people around responsible, inclusive and people-centred governance.
The PDP Youth Leader also criticised the APC for “hiding behind zoning arguments” instead of engaging in debates on governance, unemployment, infrastructure and economic hardship.
“Democracy is a contest of ideas, competence and public trust, not excuses created out of fear. If Hon. Oladipupo Adebutu truly poses no threat to the APC, there would be no reason for the ruling party and its spokespersons to make him the centrepiece of their political conversations,” Ejalonibu added.]]>
The African Democratic Congress, ADC, governorship candidate, Mr Dare Bejide, has rejected the Ekiti State election result.
Speaking in Ado-Ekiti on Sunday, Bejide described the election as lacking credibility.
He alleged that the exercise was conducted in “an atmosphere replica of a war zone”.
The ADC candidate accused the ruling party of engaging in vote buying through money and food distribution.
Bejide said the government should have relied on its achievements rather than struggling to influence voters.
“My immediate reaction is to reject the result in its entirety because the exercise was not credible,” he said.
He claimed some polling units, including his, witnessed a tense atmosphere during the election.
“You all witnessed what happened. Some places were almost like a war zone,” Bejide added.
He alleged that political appointees and a serving senator brought thugs and security personnel.
“In some places, it appeared the election was taking place only in my polling unit. It is a sad day for democracy,” the ADC candidate stated.
Bejide further alleged that vote buying was carried out openly at several polling units.
“Bags of money were brought to polling units, and enormous sums were spent,” he claimed. He said such actions reflected poor performance by the government.
“If they had performed well, there would have been no need to rely on money,” Bejide said.
The ADC candidate said he was still studying the election outcome before deciding his next move.
“I have not personally seen the full results; I have only heard reports on social media,” he said.
He added that his team was collating available polling unit results.
“Once we receive and analyse everything, we will brief our party members,” Bejide stated.
He said the party would decide on the appropriate course of action afterwards.
“At this stage, we are certainly not satisfied with the conduct of the election,” he said.
Bejide urged his supporters and Ekiti residents to remain peaceful and calm. “We are carefully studying the results and will know the appropriate steps to take,” he added. ]]>
Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has described the outcome of the Dawakin Kudu/Warawa Federal Constituency by-election as a sign of the All Progressives Congress (APC)’s chances in the 2027 general elections.

According to him, the governor said the large voters turnout and peaceful conduct of the election showed that residents still support the APC and its policies.
Gov Yusuf stated that the election was conducted in a free, fair and credible manner, reflecting the true wishes of voters. He praised the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for successfully organising the poll and commended security agencies for maintaining peace throughout the exercise.
According to the governor, the conduct and outcome of the election have strengthened public trust in Nigeria’s democratic process.
He congratulated the APC candidate on the victory and urged him to focus on delivering effective representation for the people of the constituency.
Yusuf said the result demonstrated that the APC remains a strong political force in Kano State and is positioned for further electoral success in the future.
The governor also criticised the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) for not presenting a candidate in the by-election, describing the party as “a mushroom political movement with no visible grassroots structure.”
He added that the party stayed away from the contest because it feared defeat and lacked the support needed to challenge the APC.

Director of the Abuja School of Social Thought and Politics, Sam Amadi, has said candidates are running against the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, President candidate, Peter Obi and not President Bola Tinubu.
Amadi said the 2027 election is the most farcical election in Nigeria’s history.
Posting on X, Amadi wrote: “Everyone is running against @PeterObi for the presidency, not against the incumbent president @officialABAT.
“This is the most farcical election in Nigeria’s history. And some self-proclaimed intellectuals and technocrats are fully immersed in the illogic.”

Former Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, has said that they will teach Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State a political lesson.
Fayose said this during an interview on Channels Television.
According to him, Makinde has stolen the land of the deities, warning that the deities will retrieve their land from him.
“We will teach Makinde a political lesson. If you respect me, you will get all my values and support, but if you disrespect me, you will get the downside of Fayose. I’m not a politician that is taken for granted.

The Kano State chapter of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, has responded to recent comments made by the state governor Abba Yusuf, regarding the party’s decision not to field a candidate in the just concluded Dawakin Kudu/Warawa Federal Constituency bye-election.
Gistmania earlier reported that the governor had, in a statement by his spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, claimed that NDC’s absence from the by-election was a sign that the All Progressives Congress, APC’s would emerge victorious in 2027.
Reacting, the NDC Chairman in Kano State, Hussaini Isa Mai Riga, said the NDC is not distracted by political statements aimed at scoring cheap points.
According to him, the party’s energy is currently directed at building a solid, people-centred structure across all 44 local government areas of Kano State ahead of the 2027 general elections.
“NDC is a party of strategy and discipline. Skipping one bye-election does not mean we are weak. It means we are focused on the bigger picture. Our priority is to consolidate our grassroots base, unite our members, and present credible candidates that Kano people can trust in 2027,” he said in a statement by his media aide, Adam Said Adam.
The Chairman emphasised that the party has learned from the political history of Kano and Nigeria at large, and will not waste resources on contests that do not align with its long-term vision. Instead, NDC will invest in mobilisation, political education, and policy development that addresses unemployment, insecurity, and economic hardship facing ordinary citizens.
Mai Riga expressed confidence that with the support of Kano residents and the strength of the Kwankwasiyya movement within the party, NDC will emerge victorious in the next governorship election.

Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Oyebanji has expressed gratitude to the people of the state for their overwhelming support, which culminated in his re-election in the June 20 governorship poll.
Governor Oyebanji said he remains deeply appreciative of Ekitikete for standing united in giving him a renewed four-year mandate and for ensuring that the election was conducted in a peaceful and orderly manner across all the 16 local government areas of the state.

Moments later, rumours allegedly began circulating that she was attempting to steal children. Relatives and eyewitnesses have maintained that the accusation was unfounded.
As tensions mounted, residents reportedly escorted the woman to a nearby police station, where she was placed under protective custody while authorities sought to investigate the claims.
However, the situation took a deadly turn when a large crowd allegedly descended on the station. In a statement issued on Sunday, the Kaduna State Police Command confirmed that the mob overpowered officers on duty, forcefully removed the woman from custody and attacked her.
Police said the victim was subsequently killed and her body set ablaze by the mob.

During the operation, security operatives recovered an English-made pump-action gun loaded with five live cartridges, a cutlass, charms, and substances believed to be illicit drugs from the suspects.

Operatives of the Force Intelligence Department have uncovered an alleged baby trafficking syndicate operating within a hospital in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, leading to the arrest of several suspects and the launch of a major investigation.
According to police authorities, the operation was carried out on June 12 following intelligence reports suggesting criminal activities were taking place at the medical facility. The investigation gained momentum after a number of women raised concerns over claims by the hospital that their newborn babies had died shortly after delivery.
Police said undercover officers were deployed to the facility and allegedly uncovered a scheme in which live babies delivered by mothers were secretly removed and trafficked, while the women were falsely informed that their infants had died during childbirth.
During a raid on the hospital, officers reportedly discovered an embalmed infant stored inside a bucket in the office of the facility’s medical director, 66-year-old Elizabeth Obot. Investigators alleged that the preserved body was shown to mothers as proof that their babies had died.
Further findings indicated that the deceased infant was allegedly rented out to other trafficking networks and women seeking to deceive relatives by claiming they had suffered a stillbirth.
Speaking during interrogation, Obot admitted that she had once handed over a dead infant to a woman in exchange for N10,000. The suspect explained that the preserved infant was the result of a miscarriage and claimed the child’s father had consented to its disposal. However, she admitted that the body was never buried.
Obot further stated that some women facing pressure from partners to have children used the deceased infant to stage fake pregnancy losses. She maintained her innocence, insisting that she only assisted women desperate to have children and that mothers who sold their babies did so willingly.
One of the other suspects, Uffiong Ubong Anthony, told investigators that she had worked as an auxiliary nurse for 21 years despite lacking professional nursing qualifications. She said she learnt the role by observing trained nurses at a private hospital.
The police have appealed to anyone who experienced a stillbirth at the facility to come forward and assist with ongoing investigations. Authorities also advised expectant mothers to ensure a trusted relative is present during delivery and urged hospitals to maintain adequate security measures in maternity wards to prevent the theft of newborns.

DAILY POST gathered that the attackers invaded her residence in the Kobape area of Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, with both Oyesiku and her security guard found dead at the scene.
The veteran broadcaster, who had retired from OGTV after years of service, was a well-recognised figure in Ogun's media landscape. Investigators found the guard's body within the security post, while Oyesiku's lifeless body was discovered inside her apartment.
Confirming the killing, the Police Public Relations Officer in Ogun State, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, disclosed that detectives were dispatched to the scene as soon as the alarm was raised, where they found clear indications of forced entry and a struggle within the premises. He added that the victim's car had also been stolen by the perpetrators.

According to the statement, the first breakthrough came on June 17, 2026, around 6pm, after police received reports that a notorious cult member was terrorising residents of the Iloro area in Ilesa. Acting swiftly, the Anti-Cultism Unit's patrol team moved in and arrested 30-year-old Abiola Osobu Michael, popularly known as "Small."
During questioning, the suspect reportedly admitted to being a member of the Eiye confraternity. Items recovered from him included an axe, a live cartridge, and several caps bearing the cult group's insignia, including one in blue.

Fresh allegations of vote-buying have emerged in Aramoko Ekiti, headquarters of Ekiti West Local Government Area, as the 2026 Ekiti State governorship election got underway on Saturday, with multiple voters claiming to have received cash payments from political party agents in exchange for their ballots.
Findings from the area revealed that some voters openly admitted pocketing money from representatives of contesting political parties. According to those interviewed, agents of the All Progressives Congress (APC) allegedly handed out ₦10,000 per voter, while operatives of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) reportedly offered a lesser sum of ₦2,000 to sway support.
At Polling Unit 004, located at Chief Ologbodo's House, Oke Uro, Aramoko II, eyewitnesses disclosed that party agents brazenly approached voters with cash offers, with the exchanges reportedly taking place in plain sight, despite the visible presence of electoral officials and security operatives.
Several voters who spoke on the development confirmed pocketing cash from political actors, describing the practice as a recurring pattern observed across numerous polling centres within the community.
The fresh allegations surfaced just hours after EFCC operatives had earlier visited Polling Unit 003 at Oyebanji Okelele, Ward 06, Ikogosi, also within Ekiti West Local Government Area, amid mounting concerns over inducement-driven voting.
Reports indicate that about 10 officials of the anti-graft agency arrived at the unit shortly after voting commenced, where they kept watch over proceedings. However, no arrests had been recorded as of press time.
The development comes despite earlier warnings issued by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), anti-corruption bodies, and civil society groups, who had cautioned against vote-buying and other electoral malpractices ahead of Saturday's poll.
