The United States has announced a tough new visa restriction policy aimed at cybercriminals, online fraudsters, romance scammers, and sextortion offenders who target American citizens. In a major move, the sanctions will not only affect those involved in these crimes but could also extend to their immediate family members.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio unveiled the new global policy on Thursday under Section 212(a)(3)(C) of the Immigration and Nationality Act, describing it as part of the country's intensified effort to combat international cybercrime.
According to Rubio, the policy is designed to deny U.S. visas to individuals responsible for or complicit in cyber-enabled crimes, including online scams, financial fraud, and sextortion.
"By restricting visa issuance to those who are responsible for or complicit in these criminal enterprises, we are sending a clear message: The United States will go after those who prey on our citizens," Rubio said.
He also revealed that the restrictions may apply to the immediate family members of those involved in such criminal activities, warning that anyone benefiting from or connected to these operations could face consequences.
Rubio said the Trump administration is using every available tool to dismantle global scam networks, including sanctions, criminal prosecutions, asset seizures, extradition requests, and closer cooperation with international law enforcement agencies.
He further alleged that many of these cybercrime operations are orchestrated by Chinese transnational criminal organisations, which reportedly defrauded Americans of at least $10 billion in 2024 while also fueling corruption, money laundering, and human trafficking.

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), South-West zone, has strongly opposed the proposed ban on preaching inside commercial vehicles, warning that such a law could infringe on the constitutional rights of Nigerians.
The association's reaction comes after the Senate passed the Federal Road Safety Corps (Amendment) Bill, 2026. If signed into law, the bill would impose a ₦50,000 fine on anyone found guilty of hawking, trading, or preaching inside commercial buses.
The proposed legislation also recommends a ₦50,000 fine, a six-month jail term, or both for motorists who refuse to cooperate with Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) officials during roadside breath tests carried out on reasonable suspicion.
Reacting to the development, the South-West Chairman of CAN, Bishop Barnabas Akinsanya, described the bill as troubling, especially the section that seeks to penalise religious preaching in commercial vehicles while completely banning hawking.
According to him, although the government has a duty to protect public safety, it must also respect the fundamental rights guaranteed by the Nigerian Constitution, including the freedoms of religion, expression, thought, and conscience.
CAN stressed that any law capable of limiting these constitutional rights should be carefully scrutinised to ensure it is necessary, fair, and in line with democratic principles.
The Christian body further warned that prohibiting religious preaching without clear evidence that it poses a direct threat to public safety could be seen as an unnecessary attack on religious freedom.
The association has therefore called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to withhold his assent to the bill and instead allow for wider consultations with religious bodies, civil society groups, and other relevant stakeholders before any final decision is taken.]]>
The United States has announced a 12.5 per cent tariff on goods imported from Nigeria, saying the move is aimed at countries that have failed to effectively ban and enforce restrictions on products made with forced labour.
The decision was disclosed on Thursday by the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR). According to the agency, the new tariff targets nations whose trade policies do not adequately prevent goods linked to forced labour from entering global supply chains.
Nigeria is one of six countries affected by the latest trade measure. Others include India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Mexico, and the United Kingdom. While the five other countries were hit with a 10 per cent tariff, Nigeria received a higher 12.5 per cent rate.
The latest action is part of President Donald Trump's renewed push to reshape global trade using existing US trade laws.
The tariffs come about six months after the US Supreme Court blocked the White House's attempt to introduce sweeping global tariffs under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA).
Following that ruling, President Trump turned to Section 122 of the Trade Act of 1974, introducing a universal 10 per cent tariff on imports into the US for up to 150 days before later raising it to 15 per cent.
US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said the decision followed extensive investigations involving 60 economies, two rounds of public hearings, consultations with more than 45 governments, and thousands of public comments.
"President Trump recognises that decades of moral suasion have not eradicated forced labour from global supply chains," Greer said.
He added, "The United States has had a forced labour import ban for nearly a century. It's well past time for our trading partners to do the same."

Global social media companies such as Facebook, X, TikTok, Instagram and others may soon be required to establish physical offices in Nigeria as the Senate moves to strengthen regulation and boost accountability in the country's growing digital economy.
The proposal gained overwhelming support during a public hearing held in Abuja on a bill sponsored by Senator Ned Nwoko (Delta North). The legislation seeks to amend the Nigeria Data Protection Act, 2023, making it mandatory for social media platforms operating in Nigeria to maintain offices within the country.
At the same hearing, stakeholders also threw their weight behind another bill seeking the establishment of an Artificial Intelligence Academy in Omuo-Ekiti, Ekiti State.
Speaking on behalf of Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Deputy Senate Leader Senator Lola Ashiru clarified that the proposed legislation is not intended to drive away technology companies. Instead, he said it aims to encourage stronger collaboration, improve accountability, and ensure that these global firms have a more meaningful presence in Nigeria.
Defending the bill, Senator Nwoko insisted that the proposal is not anti-business or anti-innovation.
"This bill is neither punitive nor hostile to innovation. It is not designed to frustrate investment or discourage technology companies from operating in Nigeria. On the contrary, it seeks to deepen their engagement with Nigeria by encouraging them to become true corporate citizens of our country," he said.
Nwoko pointed to countries including the United Kingdom, India, the United Arab Emirates, South Africa and Brazil, noting that they have successfully attracted major technology companies to establish local offices. According to him, the move has created jobs, increased tax revenue and helped drive technological innovation.
He argued that these successes were the result of deliberate government policies rather than chance.
"These countries did not attract such investments by accident. They recognised early that the digital economy is now as important as the traditional economy," he added.
The lawmaker maintained that Nigeria, as Africa's largest digital market, should not be left behind.
"The question, therefore, is simple: if countries with significantly smaller populations and digital markets than Nigeria have secured these investments and benefits, why should Nigeria continue to stand on the sidelines? Why should Africa's largest digital market not enjoy the same opportunities?" he asked.

Former adult film star Deyci Alejandra Omana Ortiz, widely known by her stage name Amaranta Hank, has officially been sworn in as a senator in Colombia after winning election on a platform that champions the rights of adult-content creators.
The 33-year-old took her oath of office on Monday in Bogotá as a member of the left-wing Historic Pact party. Before entering politics, Ortiz worked as a journalist and later joined the adult entertainment industry in 2017. She left the industry two years later to focus on public service.
Elected in March to represent Colombia's Norte de Santander region, Ortiz says one of her biggest goals is to secure legal protections and better working conditions for people in the adult entertainment industry, whom she believes have long faced exploitation and discrimination.

A pastor of the Power in the Word of God for the World Ministry in Oron, cState, has died, and residents of his area suspect suicide.
The incident occurred on Thursday, 23 July, at the church premises located on Etim Inyang Street, Oron Local Government Area.
Videos circulating on social media and reviewed show the deceased’s body being removed from the church by suspected members of the congregation. In another video, the body, wrapped in cloth, was seen inside a police pickup truck belonging to the Oron Area Command.
The circumstances surrounding the pastor’s death remain unclear.

The Kano State High Court in Kano on Friday sentenced Shuaibu Abdulkadir to death by hanging for the murder of a 23-year-old housewife, Rumasa’u Shuaibu.
Mr Abdulkadir, who resides in Chediyar Kuda, Shauchi Quarters, Kano, was charged with culpable homicide.
Delivering judgement, Justice Farida Rabiu-Danbappa held that the prosecution proved its case beyond a reasonable doubt.
“I find Shuaibu Abdulkadir guilty. I hereby sentence you to death by hanging for culpable homicide.
“May Allah have mercy on your soul. You have 90 days to appeal,” the judge held.
Earlier, the prosecution lawyer, Basiru Kabiru-Ali, told the court that Mr Abdulkadir committed the offence on 6 April 2025, in Farawa Quarters in Kano.
He said Mr Abdulkadir killed Ms Shuaibu, who was a friend of his girlfriend.
The prosecution presented three witnesses and tendered seven exhibits including the confessional statement, photograph and mobile phone of the deceased to prove its case against the defendant.
The convict, however, denied committing the offence which the prosecution stated contravened Section 221 of the Penal Code.
Defence counsel, Mustapha Idris, presented the convict to testify in his own defence.
Mr Idris pleaded for leniency on behalf of his client, describing him as a first-time offender who had expressed remorse for his actions.]]>
According to the agency, responders arrived to find a truck loaded with bags of monosodium glutamate lying on its side across the carriageway, blocking about 75 per cent of the road inward Mowe-Ibafo.
“Preliminary investigation indicates that the incident was caused by a mechanical failure, specifically brake failure, which led the driver to lose control and the vehicle to overturn,” the statement said
The impact triggered heavy traffic congestion and led to a secondary collision involving four other vehicles, including a Toyota Sienna, a mini truck carrying paint, a flatbed truck loaded with imported plywood, and another fully loaded truck.
The agency added that the collision caused paint and wooden sheets to spill onto the road.
“Sadly, an adult male was found trapped beneath the overturned truck and was confirmed dead at the scene,” the statement added.
His body was carefully recovered by emergency responders and handed over to officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, for evacuation.

Nigerian content creator and blogger, MC Izzy, has called on Prince Adeniyi Adeyemi to apologise to the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, over allegations made against the presidential aide, saying he believes the claims have not been substantiated.
In a video posted on his social media platforms, MC Izzy said his comments were informed by recent developments surrounding the matter, including the involvement of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).
According to the blogger, Gbajabiamila honoured an invitation from the anti-graft agency, responded to questions from investigators and returned to his official duties.
MC Izzy also referred to media reports concerning legal proceedings involving Adeyemi but did not provide further details.
The blogger said individuals making allegations against public officials should be prepared to support their claims with credible evidence.
He urged Nigerians to assess issues objectively and avoid reaching conclusions before investigations are concluded.
“We should not allow hatred for an individual to stop us from standing by the truth,” he said.

The Niger State Police Command has recovered a vehicle allegedly stolen in Lapai Local Government Area after two suspects linked to the theft were arrested in Kano State.
According to the police, the breakthrough followed credible intelligence received on July 7, 2026, indicating that two suspected car thieves, aged 23 and 28, from Kaduna State, had been arrested in Kano.
The suspects reportedly confessed during interrogation that the vehicle they had been using for criminal activities was stolen in Lapai, Niger State, prompting operatives attached to the Lapai Police Division to be deployed to Kano State to take over the investigation.
The suspects allegedly admitted that about six months ago, they conspired to steal a Volkswagen vehicle with registration number WDL 765 ZY at Maraban-Gulu, near Lapai.
Further confessing that the vehicle was taken to Kaduna State, where it had since been used for commercial transportation between Kaduna and Kano states, as well as for other alleged criminal activities.
The stolen vehicle has since been recovered, and the suspects are currently undergoing further investigation at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), with police saying efforts are ongoing to identify and reunite the vehicle with its rightful owner.
In a separate operation, a police surveillance patrol team attached to the Tudun-Wada Division arrested two suspects on July 14, 2026, at about 11:00 p.m. along the M.I. Wushishi Estate Junction in Minna.
The suspects, aged 19 and 20, were intercepted while riding in a tricycle, and a search conducted on them led to the recovery of three plastic toy pistols and 16 expired ATM cards belonging to different banks.
During interrogation, the suspects claimed they found the ATM cards while scavenging in Lagos; however, police said they are strongly suspected of using the toy guns to rob unsuspecting victims around the M.I. Wushishi Estate axis.

Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has reacted to the crash-landing of an Enugu Air aircraft at Benin Airport in Edo State.
In a post shared on social media on Friday, Keyamo said he had directed all relevant agencies to work closely with Enugu Air to unravel the cause of the incident.
It would be recalled that the aircraft crash-landed at Benin City Airport on Thursday, following which Air Peace suspended all its flights to and from the airport after its runway was temporarily shut down due to a runway incursion.
Reacting to the development, Keyamo explained that he had been duly informed that the Enugu Air aircraft skidded off the runway after landing successfully, a situation referred to in aviation terminology as a "runway excursion."
He added that everyone on board was safe, and that he had directed all relevant agencies to work closely with Enugu Air to determine the cause of the incident.]]>
During a coordinated raid in Yobe State's Fune Local Government Area, troops from the Joint Task Force North East, Operation HADIN KAI, in cooperation with the Yobe State Hunters Group, apprehended five suspected kidnappers.
Security specialist Zagazola Makama revealed this in a social media post.
He claims that the operation was executed on July 23 at around 2:00 p.m. in response to reliable information regarding the actions of suspected kidnappers in Jegalari village.
He said troops of the 233 Battalion, deployed at Damaturu Military Cantonment, stormed the hideout alongside local hunters, resulting in the arrest of five suspects identified as Hassan Lawan (28), Isah Bello (30), Haruna Suleiman (20), Ibrahim Bello (20), and Ahmadu Haruna (19).
He added that security personnel recovered three locally fabricated AK-47 rifles, one locally made pistol, two rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition, 12 rounds of 9mm pistol ammunition, three Tecno mobile phones, and one Android phone during the operation.
Preliminary investigation revealed that the suspects are indigenes of Ririn Village in Rano Local Government Area of Kano State, and that they identified themselves as members of the Fulani ethnic group, claiming to be cattle rearers.
The suspects and the recovered exhibits have been taken into military custody for further investigation to determine their involvement in kidn@pping and other criminal activities.
According to Makama, the successful operation forms part of ongoing intelligence-driven efforts by Operation HADIN KAI and other security stakeholders to dismantle kidn@pping and criminal networks operating across the North-East and adjoining states.

Rabi Abubakar, a 20-year-old woman, has been arrested by the Bauchi State Police Command for allegedly attacking her pregnant co-wife with hot water during a domestic argument, which is said to have resulted in the death of a newborn.
After an inquiry into the event, agents of the "C" Division, Tafawa Balewa Estate, detained the suspect, a resident of Daba Village in Bauchi Local Government Area.
According to the police, the att@ck occurred on July 17, 2026, at about 7:30 a.m., when the suspect allegedly poured boiling water on her 30-year-old co-wife during a domestic altercation.
The victim sustained severe burns and was rushed to the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH), Bauchi, for treatment.
While receiving care, she gave birth to a baby boy on July 19; however, the newborn, who also suffered severe burn injuries, d£ed on the same day.
Police said the mother is currently in stable condition and responding to treatment.
Confirming the incident in a statement issued on Friday, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Nafiu Habib, said the case was reported to the police on July 22 by the Officer-in-Charge of the Dabe Police Outstation in Soro Division.
He explained that upon receiving the report, police operatives immediately visited the scene, after which the suspect was traced and arrested.
During preliminary interrogation, she reportedly confessed voluntarily to committing the offence.
Habib added that the suspect remains in police custody and that the case would be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigation and prosecution.

A United States Congressman, John James, has renewed calls for the release of the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu.
James made the appeal on the floor of the House of Representatives on Thursday, linking the IPOB leader's continued detention to what he described as a pattern of religious persecution against Christians in Nigeria.
The Michigan lawmaker was referencing H.Res. 1321, a resolution he introduced on May 22, 2026, which calls on the Nigerian government to ensure that all legal proceedings involving Kanu comply with the country's constitutional obligations and international human rights commitments.
The resolution remains before the House Committee on Foreign Affairs.
Speaking at the podium, James described Nigeria as the deadliest place on Earth to be a Christian, alleging that tens of thousands of Christians have been k!lled since 2019 as part of a sustained pattern of religiously motivated violence by Islamist jihadists which he said the Nigerian government had ignored or enabled.
He added that extremist groups, including Boko Haram, operate without any meaningful response from Nigerian authorities.
Turning to Kanu's case, James described the IPOB leader as a courageous figure convicted in what he called a farce show trial for speaking out against the k!llings.
He argued that Kanu, who is serving a life sentence on t3rrorism charges he characterised as false, deserves either a fresh, constitutionally compliant trial or unconditional freedom.
He urged his colleagues to support his bill, calling on the Nigerian government to either conduct a fresh trial in line with its own constitution with proper regard for evidence.
Access to legal counsel, medical care and international standards on humane detention conditions or, better still, release Nnamdi Kanu immediately and unconditionally.
He further warned that continued US financial support for Nigeria could not go unchallenged, arguing that America gives billions of dollars to Nigeria and would not continue funding what he termed a Christian genocide, adding that the US had a moral obligation to ensure Christians in Nigeria could worship freely.
Kanu was sentenced to life imprisonment on November 20, 2025, by a Federal High Court in Abuja presided over by Justice James Omotosho, following his conviction on t3rrorism charges.
He is currently held at the Correctional Centre in Kuje, Abuja, following his 2021 arrest in Nairobi, Kenya, and subsequent transfer to Nigeria.

Ten secondary school graduates were detained by the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps' (NSCDC) Adamawa State Command due to alleged final-year celebrations that were marked as "signed out."
In a statement issued by DSC Nyako Amidu Baba, the command's public relations officer, the students were charged with public annoyance and other offenses related to their final-year celebrations.
The statement added that the suspects were apprehended by the command's Safe School Response Squad following intelligence reports of disruptive activities involving students.
Capital School, GDSS Demsawo, Doubelli and Damilu, who were allegedly engaged in painting their bodies, tearing their school uniforms, taking part in street fights, and other acts capable of disrupting public peace and order.
According to the statement, the trend, which has increasingly become a source of concern to parents, school authorities and the general public, had earlier drawn the attention of the Adamawa State Government, which, through the State Ministry of Education, issued a directive against the practice last year.
It said that following intelligence reports, this year's activities by graduating secondary school students took a dangerous turn, with reports alleging that some individuals dressed in a criminal manner to dispossess members of the public of their mobile phones and other valuables.
It added that in the course of the operation, one of the persons arrested was found wearing a school uniform but was reportedly not a student, while the command also discovered that some of those arrested were not final-year students as initially presumed, but were still in SS1 and SS2.
The State Commandant, CC Nasiru Saleh, has consequently directed that a comprehensive investigation be conducted into the circumstances surrounding the activities and to identify other persons who may have been involved.
The statement reiterated that the command would not tolerate any act capable of disrupting the peaceful conduct of academic activities, threatening public safety, or undermining the security and wellbeing of students and members of the public.

The United States has condemned the killing of members of the family of Plateau-based cleric, Rev. Ezekiel Dachomo, describing the attack as horrific and urging Nigerian authorities to ensure those responsible are brought to justice.
In a statement shared on X on Thursday, the US Department of State’s Bureau of African Affairs expressed condolences to the victims’ families and called for stronger measures to prevent further attacks on vulnerable communities across Nigeria’s Middle Belt.
“The United States strongly condemns the horrific killing of members of Rev. Ezekiel Dachomo’s family in Plateau State, Nigeria. The continued violence targeting Christian communities and other vulnerable populations in Nigeria’s Middle Belt is deeply alarming,” the bureau said.
The US said it had already engaged Nigerian officials on the worsening security situation, stressing that urgent action was needed to curb recurring attacks and hold perpetrators accountable.
“As I discussed last week with Nigerian officials, we must do more to prevent violent acts like those yesterday. The perpetrators must be held accountable, and urgent action is needed to strengthen security and protect Christians and other vulnerable communities,” the statement added.
The bureau reaffirmed Washington’s commitment to working with the Nigerian government to combat terrorism and violent extremism, stressing that Christians and other Nigerians should be able to practise their faith without fear of violence.
The statement followed the July 12 attack on Kum community in Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State, where nine members of Rev. Dachomo’s extended family, including a two-month-old baby, were killed.
According to the cleric, the attackers, believed to be armed Fulani militias, asked for him by name before opening fire on his relatives.
Dachomo, who serves as Regional Chairman of the Church of Christ in Nations (COCIN) in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area, said his family had repeatedly been targeted because of his outspoken criticism of the violence in Plateau State.
He recalled that his grandmother and an uncle were also killed in previous attacks, adding that days after burying his relatives, he received a written death threat from the same group, warning that he would be their next target.

Troops of Operation FANSAN YAMMA have killed five suspected terrorists and rescued 11 kidnapped victims during a gun battle along the Gambada–Gummi–Sokoto road in Zamfara State.
The development was reported by Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency and security analyst covering the Lake Chad region.
According to the report, the troops engaged the suspected terrorists at about 4:30pm. on July 22 while carrying out offensive operations along the corridor.
Makama reported that the operation led to a fierce exchange of gunfire, during which five suspected terrorists were neutralised, while several others fled into the surrounding bush under sustained military pressure.
The report said, “The fleeing terrorists abandoned 11 kidnapped victims and one motorcycle, all of which were recovered by the troops,” the report stated.”
Makama further reported that the rescued victims were secured by the troops before being evacuated to safety for medical attention and debriefing.

Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, has dismissed reports claiming that his office earmarked N1 billion in the 2026 budget for the purchase of musical instruments for churches in Bende Federal Constituency, Abia State.
In a statement released through his Chief Press Secretary, Levinus Nwabughiogu, Kalu described the reports as misleading, insisting that the approved allocation is N780 million, not N1 billion.
He explained that the funds, after Value Added Tax (VAT) and other statutory deductions, are meant to finance a youth re-orientation and social support programme to be carried out through faith-based organisations.
According to the statement, the intervention will provide evangelical musical instruments and public address systems to selected churches as part of campaigns aimed at tackling drug abuse, segxwal offences, violent crime, and other social vices. The programme is also designed to promote discipline, moral values, peaceful coexistence, and character development among young people.
Kalu noted that Bende Federal Constituency comprises 13 electoral wards and has more than 200 churches. He said the first phase of the initiative will benefit 130 churches, averaging about 10 churches in each ward.
He added that each participating church is expected to receive support worth approximately N5 million to N6 million.

A Federal High Court in Abuja has encouraged Nollywood actor Emeka Ike, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and Lere Olayinka, media aide to the FCT Minister, to explore an out-of-court settlement in the actor’s ₦10 billion privacy breach lawsuit.
During proceedings on Wednesday, Justice Salim Ibrahim advised all parties to consider resolving the matter amicably instead of pursuing a prolonged legal battle.
At the hearing, Emeka Ike’s lawyer, Leonard Adeh, informed the court that the case was scheduled for further mention. Counsel to INEC, Senior Advocate of Nigeria Solomon Umoh, confirmed that the commission had filed and served all necessary court documents, including its counter-affidavit.
Adeh acknowledged receiving INEC’s response, noting that it was only served on Tuesday and that his client was still within the legal timeframe to file a reply.
Justice Ibrahim then suggested that the parties explore the possibility of an amicable settlement.
Responding to the court’s suggestion, Lere Olayinka’s lawyer, Akpama Ekwe, said the willingness to settle should come from the applicant. However, Adeh clarified that Emeka Ike was open to resolving the dispute peacefully if the respondents made a formal settlement proposal.
He added that, until such an offer is presented, the matter should proceed to hearing.
Following the submissions, the judge adjourned the case until October 12 for hearing, with the date agreed upon by all parties.

Everything changed, however, after he returned home one summer and noticed that several neighboring properties were even more massive than his own. Some measured around 90,000 square feet, while others stretched to nearly 130,000 square feet.
Curious, O’Neal asked around to find out who owned the lavish estates, only to discover that hardly anyone knew.
“I’m asking everybody, ‘Who are these guys?’ Nobody knows. And that’s the difference. Wealthy people, they just do,” he explained.
Using the building where the interview was held as another example, O’Neal pointed out that although someone was making a fortune from owning it, very few people even knew who the owner was.
He later discovered that one of the neighborhood’s largest mansions—spanning roughly 150,000 square feet—belonged to the owner of a timeshare company.
According to the basketball icon, visiting the property was a humbling experience that completely changed his outlook.
“I went into his house, and it made my house look like an apartment complex. It was so beautiful,” he recalled.
That moment, he said, taught him that genuine wealth doesn't need to be announced or put on display.
“I was like, ‘You know what, I’m gonna change my mentality. I’m just going to go about my business without telling everybody what I’m doing.’”

The Nigerian Army has cleared a man who was arrested during a military operation in Borno State over suspected links to ISIS, saying a thorough investigation found no evidence connecting him to any terrorist organisation.
The clarification comes after media reports published on July 14 identified the man as a terror suspect following his arrest by troops of the 68 Battalion during a military operation launched after an attack on Cross Kauwa.
In a statement issued on Thursday, July 23, the Acting Military Information Officer of Operation Hadin Kai, Captain Mohammed Goni, identified the man as Aboubakar Muhammad Zein-Nur, also known as Houdairi.
According to the Army, Zein-Nur was detained because he was intercepted under suspicious circumstances in an area where terrorist groups are known to exploit border routes for movement and logistics.
Captain Goni explained that the troops acted in line with standard operational procedures by taking him into custody for profiling and further investigation.
However, after comprehensive intelligence assessments and security screening, investigators found no evidence linking Zein-Nur to ISIS or any other terrorist group.
The Army further revealed that the investigation established Zein-Nur as a resident of Shattu Anguba Village in Bosso, Republic of Niger, who earns a living as a camel herder beyond the River Komadougou.
Based on the findings, Operation Hadin Kai officially cleared him of all allegations of terrorist affiliation.
The Theatre Command also stressed that everyone apprehended under suspicious circumstances during military operations undergoes due process and thorough security screening to ensure innocent civilians are not wrongly identified as terrorist elements.

A tragic incident has claimed the lives of two suspected students of Gateway ICT Polytechnic, Saapade, while two others are currently receiving treatment after they allegedly consumed a substance believed to be nitrous oxide, commonly known as "laughing gas."
The incident occurred on Tuesday, July 21, in the Oke-Ola Phase II area of Isara-Remo, Ogun State, and was confirmed by the Ogun State Police Command on Thursday, July 23.
According to a resident who spoke anonymously, four students were reportedly involved in taking the substance.
"The incident happened on Tuesday. From what we gathered, the students were taking what they called laughing gas. Sadly, two of them died after consuming it, while the other two were rushed to the hospital," the source said.
Confirming the development, the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, said the command has launched an investigation into the suspected drug-related incident.
"The Ogun State Police Command is investigating a suspected drug-related incident where two persons were found dead, while two others were hospitalised after allegedly consuming hard drugs," Babaseyi said.
He added that the bodies of the deceased have been deposited in the morgue for autopsy, while the surviving victims are receiving medical care.
"The deceased have been deposited for autopsy, while the survivors are undergoing treatment. Investigations are ongoing to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the incident," he stated.
The police also used the opportunity to warn members of the public, especially young people, against drug abuse and the dangers of consuming illicit substances.

The Abia State Police Command has confirmed the death of five members of the same family at Umuimo community in Osisioma Ngwa Local Government Area of the state.
The incident has thrown the community into mourning following the discovery of the lifeless bodies of the family inside their residence.
It was gathered that the family was last seen by neighbours and other residents on Saturday, July 18, before their prolonged absence raised concerns within the community.
After several days without seeing any member of the household, residents reportedly checked the residence, where the five bodies were discovered on Monday morning.
A community source told Vanguard that residents suspect the family may have died from inhaling carbon monoxide fumes from a power generator, although the cause of death has yet to be confirmed.
Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer, Abia State Command, DSP Maureen Chinaka, said the matter was reported by the deceased’s brother after he was unable to reach one of the victims.
She said police officers accompanied the complainant to the family’s residence at Umuimo Village, Osisioma Ngwa.
According to Chinaka, “Upon arrival, repeated knocks yielded no response. They subsequently forced entry into the house, where they discovered the lifeless and decomposing bodies of their brother and his family.
“The crime scene has been visited. A preliminary visual inspection of the bodies was conducted, and photographs taken. The corpses have been deposited at the morgue for preservation and autopsy. Investigation is ongoing.”

The Nigerian Army Ordnance Corps, NAOC, has declared one of its personnel, Private Mohammed Yusuf Amutu, wanted over his alleged involvement in the illegal sale and supply of military uniforms to terrorists and other criminal elements.
In a statement issued on Thursday by the Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, Headquarters Nigerian Army Ordnance Corps, Major Oluwatope Dorcas Aluko, the Corps said preliminary investigations revealed that the soldier, who was serving at the Nigerian Army Ordnance Kits Factory, absconded from his unit on June 3, 2026.
According to the statement, the appropriate military authorities have declared Amutu wanted, while efforts are ongoing to locate and apprehend him for a full investigation and disciplinary action in line with existing military laws.
The Army said it maintains a zero-tolerance policy toward misconduct, indiscipline, or any act capable of compromising its operational effectiveness, integrity and reputation, or threatening national security.
It warned that any personnel found to have aided terrorists, criminals or other non-state actors through the unauthorized sale, diversion or distribution of military uniforms, accoutrements or other controlled items would face the full weight of both military and civil laws.
The Corps appealed to members of the public to provide credible information that could lead to the arrest of the wanted soldier, urging anyone with useful information to report to the nearest military formation or any security agency.

Social media personality, Blessing Okoro, popularly known as Blessing CEO, was on Thursday granted N20 million bail by an Ikeja Special Offences Court over alleged N69.15 million property fraud.
Justice Rahman Oshodi admitted the defendant to bail with two responsible sureties in like sum.
Oshodi said although the prosecution did not oppose the application, the court had a duty to assess the gravity of the charges.
He said the court also considered the severity of the prescribed punishment before exercising its discretion.
The judge said the court took into account the defence’s explanation on the whereabouts of the defendant’s international passport.
He directed each surety to provide a three-year bank statement or proof of fixed deposits worth at least N20 million.
Oshodi also ordered the defendant and her sureties to undergo screening through the Lagos State Judiciary’s Bail Information Management System.
He further directed the Nigerian Immigration Service to enforce the defendant’s travel restrictions pending determination of the case.
The judge adjourned the case until Oct. 12 for continuation of trial.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) arraigned Blessing CEO on June 9.
She is facing a two-count charge of stealing and obtaining money by false pretences. She pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The EFCC alleged that in March 2025, the defendant obtained N69.15 million from Hope Chiropractic Health Clinic Ltd. through false pretences.
The commission alleged she claimed she would lease a property located in Lekki, Lagos, to the company.
According to the EFCC, the alleged offences contravene Section 285 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State.

Former Vice President of Nigeria and presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, Atiku Abubakar, has said that Nigerians want to know whether President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had, in the past, forfeited drug-related money to the United States government.
Recall that the Presidency had alleged that Atiku spent $1.2 million on a US lobbyist over his legal standing in America.
Reacting, Atiku described the Presidency’s latest statement attacking his person as further proof that the Tinubu administration has chosen diversion over disclosure and insults over accountability.
Atiku said it was telling that the Presidency devoted several paragraphs to personal attacks without addressing the fundamental issues that continue to generate legitimate public interest.
“When governments abandon facts for insults and substitute evidence with abuse, they unwittingly admit that they have run out of convincing answers. Nigerians expected clarification. What they received instead was a barrage of name-calling and political invective.”
Atiku noted that raising questions about matters contained in public records should never be misconstrued as an attack on Nigeria’s sovereignty.
“No one has reported Nigeria to anyone. Nigeria is not on trial. The issue concerns questions arising from publicly available records relating to the occupant of the nation’s highest office. Those records were not created by the opposition, the ADC, or any political actor. Attempting to silence legitimate public inquiry by wrapping oneself in the national flag does not answer the questions before the country.”
The former Vice President said it was particularly unfortunate that the Presidency chose to revive old political allegations against him instead of responding directly to the issues with which it was confronted.
“Nigerians can distinguish between political mudslinging and factual responses. Personal attacks do not erase public records, nor do they substitute for transparency. The Presidency should resist the temptation to personalise issues that require clear and factual explanations,” he stated.

The United Kingdom, UK has published an updated list of prohibited and restricted items that travellers are not allowed to bring into the country in 2026, warning that banned goods will be seized by customs officials at the border.
The updated guidance, issued as part of the UK’s border and customs regulations, outlines items that are either completely prohibited or require special licences before they can be imported.
According to the guidance, several goods are banned from entering the UK because they pose risks to public safety, public health, the environment and wildlife conservation.
Among the prohibited items are controlled drugs, offensive weapons such as flick knives, self-defence sprays including pepper spray and CS gas, endangered animal and plant species, rough diamonds, and indecent or obscene materials, including certain books, magazines, films and DVDs.
The UK government also bans personal imports of meat and dairy products from most non-European Union countries in a bid to prevent the spread of animal diseases.
In addition to banned goods, authorities said certain items can only be brought into the country if travellers obtain the necessary permits or licences beforehand.
These include firearms, explosives and ammunition, all of which are subject to strict import controls.
Food and plant products are also subject to regulations. Authorities said such items may be refused entry if they are not free from pests and diseases, are intended for commercial use rather than personal consumption, or were not grown within the European Union.
The guidance also warns against bringing counterfeit or pirated goods into the UK. Customs officials may seize items suspected of infringing intellectual property rights, including unauthorised copies of films, music and other copyrighted materials, while offenders could face prosecution.
UK authorities advised travellers to familiarise themselves with the country’s customs regulations before travelling to avoid delays, confiscation of goods or possible legal consequences upon arrival.

The Department of State Services, DSS, says it will appeal the life prison sentence handed out to three men arrested for their role in the abduction of school pupils and teachers in the Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.
The secret police said it was not satisfied with the verdict, stating that the sentence is not commensurate with the crimes committed.
According to the DSS, the beheading of two teachers by members of the terrorist organisation involved in the abduction is a capital offense which should attract the death sentence.
DAILY POST recalls that Justice Salim Ibrahim on Thursday sentenced the men to life imprisonment after they pleaded guilty to belonging to Darul Salam, an affiliate of the Ansaru terrorist organisation; concealing information on the kidnapping; and inciting through religious ideology.
The convicts include Abdulrazak Umar, alias Abu Khalifa/Abu Khalid; Yunusa Musa, alias Yunusa Bin Musa; and Shamsu Adamu Sani, alias Abu Itisar.
Abdulrazak Umar, alias Abu Khalifa/Abu Khalid, pleaded guilty to counts 7, 8, 9 and 10, which bordered on training and passing instructions and inciting terror group members on a particular religious ideology.
They were put on trial by the DSS on a 10-count charge bordering on kidnapping, concealment of information, and terrorism-related offences, contrary to Section 16(1) of the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022.
The charges stated that the defendants, all from Niger State, knowingly withheld information about individuals linked to terrorist activities, participated in kidnapping, and used a messaging platform to facilitate terrorist training.
The three defendants were sentenced to life imprisonment on Count 6. Abdulrazak Umar was sentenced to life imprisonment on Count 7; life imprisonment on Count 9 and a life sentence on Count 10.

Bandits have reportedly k!lled at least 23 farmers in Sauna/Ruwan Gora community, Talata Mafara Local Government Area of Zamfara State.
A resident, who spoke to Daily Trust on condition of anonymity, said the bandits initially passed through the village at about 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 22, 2026 without attacking anyone.
"The bandits passed through our village around 2:00 p.m. without harming anybody. People were even counting the number of motorcycles conveying them,” the resident said.
He explained that the attackers later returned and opened fire on farmers working on their farmlands, chasing down those who attempted to escape.
"They k!lled 23 people. They attacked them on their respective farms, pursued those who ran for safety and k!lled them,” he said.
According to the source, preparations were underway for a mass burial of the 23 victims on Thursday.
“We have prepared the bodies of the 23 victims for a mass burial today,” he added.
The residents appealed to Governor Dauda Lawal and the Federal Government to urgently strengthen security in the area to protect lives and property.

The Federal High Court in Abuja on Thursday sentenced three terrorists linked to the May abduction of school children and teachers in Orire Local Government Area (LGA) of Oyo State, to a life imprisonment.
Justice Salim Ibrahim sentenced the three men after they pleaded guilty to some of the 10 terrorism charges preferred against them by the federal government.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Abdulrazak Umar (a.k.a. Abu Khalifa/Abu Khalid), Yunusa Musa (a.k.a. Yunusa bin Musa) and Shamsu Adamu Sani (a.k.a. Abu Itisar), pleaded guilty to counts four and six.
It was earlier reported that the three defendants pleaded guilty to some of the 10 charges when they made their first court appearance on Thursday, about six days after the federal government filed the charges last Friday.
They pleaded guilty to six counts in total.
Mr Umar, the first defendant, pleaded guilty to Counts 7, 8, 9 and 10, which are all four charges naming him as the sole defendant.
The four counts accused him of providing training and instructions to terrorists and inciting members to commit acts of terrorism through a WhatsApp group titled, “The Oneness of Allah is the Foundation of Peace.”
But Mr Musa and Mr Sani pleaded guilty to two charges as contained in Counts 4 and 6.
Count 4 alleged that the three defendants, sometime between January and May in Suleja LGA, concealed information of Muhammad Sani, Jibril Mohammed and Ibrahim Khabab as being terrorists who masterminded the kidnap of school children and teachers in Oriire LGA of Oyo State, but failed to report same to the relevant security agencies.
The charges were brought under various provisions of the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022.
Judge Ibrahim sentenced them to life imprisonment for Count 6, the maximum penalty prescribed by law for the offence, and gave them a 25-year jail term for Count 4.
The judge sentenced Mr Umar to the maximum penalty of life imprisonment for Counts 7, 9 and 10, while jailing him for 20 years for Count 8.
The convicts maintained their innocence regarding the remaining four counts numbered 1, 2, 3 and 5.
Justice Ibrahim then adjourned the matter until 16 and 17 September, for commencement of trial on the remaining four charges.
NAN reports that the men, who were arrested by the State Security Service (SSS) all hail from Suleja LGA of Niger State.
Gistmania had reported that the charges, filed by the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation, include terrorism, conspiracy, aiding kidnapping, and concealment of terrorist activities.
The defendants were also charged with membership of a proscribed terrorist organisation, incitement to terrorism, provision of terrorist training, cyber-related offences and unlawful mining.
The prosecution alleged that the trio, all from Suleja Local Government Area of Niger State, conspired with Muhammad Sani, Jibril Mohammed and Ibrahim Khabab, who are said to be at large, to kidnap the pupils and teachers between January and May.
It further alleged that they aided the abduction and concealed information about the identities and activities of the alleged masterminds despite having prior knowledge of the plot.
The charges also accused the three defendants of professing membership of Darul Salam, described as an affiliate of Jama’atu Ansarul Muslimina Fi Biladis Sudan (Ansaru), a proscribed terrorist organisation in Nigeria.
Separate allegations were made against the first defendant, Mr Umar. The prosecution accused him of providing training and instructions to terrorists and inciting members to commit acts of terrorism through a WhatsApp group titled, ‘The Oneness of Allah is the Foundation of Peace.”
Mr Umar was also accused of engaging in unlawful gold mining in the Chaza area of Suleja Local Government Area between 2024 and 2026.
The charges arrived barely a week after the Nigerian military in collaboration with other security forces rescued 44 schoolchildren and teachers abducted by kidnappers in three schools in Yawota and Ahoro-Esinele in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.
The rescue ended the 56-day captivity of the survivors who terrorists seized on 15 May.
Two of the three teachers abducted by the kidnappers were killed in captivity. One of them, Michael Oyedokun, was beheaded days after his abduction, while the other, a pastor named John Olaleye, was also killed while being held by the abductors.
Three security personnel were also killed during the rescue operation in separate gun battles with the kidnappers. The officers were Lieutenant F. A. Isaac (N/20349) of the Nigerian Army, Private Silas Musa (23NA/84/4604) of the 81 Battalion, Nigerian Army, and Sergeant Abena John Jerome (F/No. 234511) of the Nigeria Police Force.
In a statement following the successful rescue operation, the Presidency quoted President Bola Tinubu as saying some kidnappers were killed and at least eight terrorists were arrested.

The convicts were jailed on Thursday for six charges, although their trial will proceed on the four remaining counts they denied.
The six offences are Counts 4, 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10.
In Count 4, the prosecution alleged that the three defendants concealed information about the identities and activities of the alleged masterminds despite knowing they were involved in the kidnapping.
Count 6 alleged that the three defendants professed membership of Darul Salam, described in the charge as an affiliate of the proscribed terrorist group Ansaru, contrary to Section 25(1) of the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022.
Counts 7 and 8 relate only to Mr Umar. The prosecution alleged that he provided training and instructions to terrorists through a WhatsApp group titled The Oneness of Allah is the Foundation of Peace, contrary to Sections 15 and 2(2)(g) of the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022.
In Count 9 the prosecution accused Mr Umar of using the same WhatsApp group to incite members to commit acts of terrorism, contrary to Section 18 of the Cybercrime (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act, 2015.
Count 10 accused Mr Umar of unlawfully mining gold in streams within the Chaza area of Suleja Local Government Area between 2024 and 2026, contrary to Section 8(b) of the Miscellaneous Offences Act.
Following Thursday’s judgement, the defendants will now face four charges to which they maintain their innocence.
These are Counts 1, 2, 3 and 5.
In Count 1, the prosecution alleged that the three defendants conspired with Muhammad Sani, Jibril Mohammed and Ibrahim Khabab to kidnap schoolchildren and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State between January and May, contrary to Section 26(1) of the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022.
Counts 2 and three alleged that they aided the three suspects in carrying out the abduction, contrary to Section 26(2) of the Act.
Count 5 accused them of failing to report information they allegedly had about the planned abduction to security agencies to facilitate the suspects’ arrest.
It was reported that gunmen abducted 39 pupils and six teachers from two primary schools and one secondary school in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State on 15 May. One teacher was killed during the attack.
The incident prompted a joint operation by security agencies after President Bola Tinubu directed them to secure the victims’ release.
After 56 days in captivity, the Presidency announced on 10 July that the abducted pupils and teachers had been rescued.

Canada has announced new temporary border measures that could affect travellers from parts of Africa following an Ebola disease outbreak, introducing entry bans, mandatory quarantines and enhanced health screening for eligible arrivals.
The measures, which took effect as part of Canada’s efforts to prevent the virus from entering and spreading within the country, apply to travellers who have recently visited or lived in Uganda, South Sudan and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).
According to the government, the restrictions will remain in force until August 29, 2026, although officials said the overall health risk to people in Canada is currently considered low.
Under the new rules, foreign nationals from Uganda, South Sudan and the DRC will not be allowed to travel to Canada during the suspension period, even if they already hold a valid temporary resident visa, permanent resident visa or electronic Travel Authorization (eTA).
Canada also introduced additional restrictions specifically targeting travellers who have recently been in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Foreign nationals who have visited the country within the previous 21 days are prohibited from entering Canada or boarding flights bound for the country.
Travellers who have been in Uganda or South Sudan within the past 21 days may still be allowed to enter Canada if they are eligible, but they will be required to complete a mandatory 21-day quarantine upon arrival unless they qualify for an exemption.
The government said Canadian citizens, permanent residents and individuals registered under the Indian Act who have travelled to any of the three affected countries within the previous 21 days will also be permitted to enter but must undergo the same 21-day quarantine requirement unless exempt.
Before travelling, affected passengers must prepare a suitable quarantine plan, including accommodation where they can remain isolated for 21 days with access to food, water, medication and public health services.
Foreign nationals eligible to enter Canada may also be required to provide proof of paid accommodation for the quarantine period and could be denied entry if they cannot meet the financial requirements.
Upon arrival, eligible travellers will undergo a health assessment conducted by border officials. Those without symptoms will receive a quarantine kit containing a digital thermometer and health monitoring instructions and will be required to record their temperature twice daily throughout the quarantine period.
Anyone displaying symptoms consistent with Ebola disease will immediately undergo a medical examination and be placed in isolation at a medical facility or another designated location until health authorities determine it is safe for them to leave.
Canadian authorities warned that anyone who fails to comply with the quarantine requirements or other measures under the Quarantine Act could face severe penalties, including fines of up to C$1 million, imprisonment for up to three years, or both.

The Federal High Court in Abuja on Thursday declined to hear an application filed by the detained National President of Miyetti Allah Kauta Kore, Bello Bodejo, seeking a review of the conditions attached to the ₦2 billion bail granted him days earlier.
Justice Inyang Ekwo, in his ruling, explained that since the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is opposing the review application, the court might not be able to conclude proceedings on the matter before the commencement of the court's vacation.
According to a news agency report, the EFCC had charged Bodejo with money laundering involving $2.63 million allegedly linked to the Bauchi State Government.
On Monday, the judge had granted him bail in the sum of ₦2 billion with two sureties, directing that one surety must provide evidence of a three-year tax clearance and reside within the court's jurisdiction, while the other must own landed property in Abuja worth ₦2 billion.
At Thursday's proceedings, Bodejo's lawyer, Mohammed Sheriff, informed the court of his client's application seeking a variation of the bail conditions.
Prosecution counsel, Fatai Erewunmi, confirmed he had been served with the application and had responded with a counter affidavit.
However, after reviewing the matter, the judge indicated that he might be unable to conclude proceedings on the application, given the EFCC's opposition, before the court proceeds on vacation.
He therefore advised both parties to approach a vacation judge to hear the application during the court's recess, after which the substantive case could be returned to his court for trial.
Justice Ekwo subsequently adjourned the matter until 5 October for the commencement of trial.
The EFCC had accused Bodejo of receiving 100,000 dollars, among other sums in foreign currency, from Sa'idu Abubakar, a former Accountant-General of Bauchi State who is currently in police custody.
The commission alleged that the amount exceeded the statutory cash transaction threshold of ₦5 million prescribed under Section 1(a) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act, 2011 (as amended), and that the transaction was not routed through a financial institution as required by law.
He was said to have committed an offence contrary to Section 16(1)(d) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act, 2011 (as amended), punishable under Section 16(2)(b) of the same Act.

Human trafficking survivors have described how they were enticed from Nigeria with promises of employment and a better life in Côte d'Ivoire, only to find themselves in prostitution, forced labor, and segxwal exploitation.
Monica, 17; Juliet, 18; Rejoice, 25; Joy, 22; and Monica, 38 are among the victims who were rescued.
They claimed that traffickers took advantage of their aspirations for a brighter future by making bogus job offers.
The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons and pertinent Côte d'Ivoire authorities collaborated to rescue the victims.
According to a statement released on Thursday by Prosper Michael, the founder of the Global Anti-Human Trafficking Organization.
Recounting her ordeal, Monica said she had accepted a bakery job offer in Abuja before being taken through Lagos to Côte d'Ivoire.
She explained that she informed her parents because she believed the offer was genuine, only to later realise there were no jobs after she and others were locked in a room.
She added that the victims were instructed to tell anyone who contacted them that they were safe, despite being forced to work, recalling that when she spoke to her mother and began crying, her captors immediately seized the phone from her.
She said they kept deducting money from the little the victims earned without explanation, adding that she and another victim eventually escaped with the help of local residents and reached out to GAHTO.
Another survivor, Monica Tamah, said she had travelled abroad hoping to provide for her family and fund her daughter's education, only to be forced into pr0stitution.
She explained that on arrival, they discovered there were no jobs and were instead told they had been brought for pr0stitution and would have to repay transportation debts through s3x work.
She claimed that she and other victims were forced to sleep with as many as 15 men daily, with their captors reportedly making about 50,000 CFA francs a day from them while the women received little or nothing, noting that she remained in captivity for about six months before she was rescued.
GAHTO said its representative in Côte d'Ivoire carried out the rescue with the support of local authorities, disclosing that three other victims from Benue State were rescued in a separate operation.
The organisation described the operations as a major breakthrough in its campaign against human tr@fficking and the protection of vulnerable Nigerians across West Africa.

President of the Dorowa Babuje Youth Council in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State, Pam Fom, was on Wednesday, July 22nd, 2026, reportedly ambushed and shot by suspected Fulani militias a day after he granted an interview condemning an attack on the community by terrorists on Tuesday, where two youths were killed.
Conflict journalist, Masara Kim Usman, who confirmed the attack on Fom in a post on his Facebook page on Thursday morning, said the youth leader was attacked on his way to a neighbouring community by gunmen suspected to be Fulani militias shortly after he had an interview with him where he openly condemned an earlier attack in Dorowa.
“So I interviewed this youth leader on an attack that killed two members of his community near Jos yesterday, and today he was shot by the same Fulani terrorist,” Usman wrote.
In the interview, Fom had narrated how the Fulani terrorists hid among their cattle while grazing and targeted the two youths who were riding on a motorcycle. After killing them, they proceeded to a mining site and opened fire on the miners, injuring many of them.
He went on to call on the government and security agencies to provide adequate protection for the people of the community, or the youths would have no option but to do everything possible to protect their people, including taking up arms to defend their community.
But barely hours after Fom’s interview, he was ambushed by the terrorists who shot and left him for dead.
Another youth leader, Titus Badung, who also confirmed the attack on Fom, also posted the news on social media.

Two children and a shoemaker, identified as JB, who were abducted by armed bandits during an attack on Ijalu, Egbe in Yagba West Local Government Area of Kogi State on June 3, 2026, have regained their freedom.
Gistmania reported that the children were abducted alongside their mother, Mrs Idowu Kemi Totilayo, and baby brother on June 3, 2026.
Troops in conjunction with members of the Vigilante Group of Nigeria (VGN) rescued mother and child.
The victims were released on Tuesday night, July 21, 2026, after spending about seven weeks in captivity.
Their release comes weeks after the children’s father, Mr. Idowu Samuel, made a public appeal for financial assistance, revealing the difficult conditions his children were facing in captivity.
According to Mr. Samuel, armed bandits invaded his home in Ijalu on June 3, abducting his wife, their two children, and a shoemaker identified as JB.
His wife and their infant were rescued later that same night, while the two children and the shoemaker remained in the custody of the kidnappers.
Mr. Samuel had disclosed that the abductors informed the family that the two children had become seriously ill while in captivity.
He also revealed that the kidnappers reduced their initial ransom demand from N200 million to N6 million and requested additional items, including five bags of rice, 25 litres of petrol, five litres of red oil, and five litres of engine oil.
Sources confirmed that the ransom and requested items were eventually provided, leading to the victims’ release.
The two children are currently receiving medical treatment at an undisclosed hospital, while details about the condition of the shoemaker have not yet been made public.

A viral video shows South African women confronting former Miss Universe Nigeria, Chidimma Adetshina, outside the Cape Town Regional Court, telling her to return to Nigeria and calling her an “identity thief.”

South African officials claim her mother used fake documents to register her birth, insisting Adetshina has no legal right to remain in the country.

A Nigerian returnee from South Africa, Jamyou Sanni, has narrated how financial hardship and the collapse of his businesses forced him into becoming an undocumented migrant after he was unable to renew his residence permit.
Sanni spoke on Vanguard’s The Nigeria Metre Podcast while recounting his experience in South Africa following years of harassment and economic challenges.
According to him, he entered South Africa legally but later struggled to maintain his immigration status after abandoning his studies due to financial difficulties.
“When I got there, I got there legally. The visa was for some months, but within that month, before the visa expired, I was unable to apply for a permanent residence or a permit,” he said.
Sanni explained that he later secured a two-year study permit through Boston College, which enabled him to remain in the country legally for a period.

He, however, said the rising cost of living and declining income made it impossible to continue his education while meeting other financial obligations.
“But after I got the permit, it was hard trying to survive with paying rent monthly. It wasn’t easy to pay school fees, paying rent and keeping up with life as a person. So, I had to let go of school,” he said.
According to him, leaving school meant he could no longer rely on the institution to renew his immigration documents.
“Because I let go of the school, the school also can’t help me to renew my papers. That was what happened. That’s how I became illegal immigrant,” he added.
Asked why he did not apply for permanent residency, Sanni said his intention was only to obtain temporary permits that would allow him to remain in South Africa legally.
“I didn’t apply to stay permanently. I was applying for permits just to stay for as long as they would let me stay,” he said.
He also cited the high cost of renewing permits and the country’s expensive living conditions as major obstacles.
“Even applying for a permit costs so much. If you don’t have a full life for yourself, you pay like 5,000 rand at least for rent per month. You have to stock food and all that, and you don’t earn too much to be able to do everything for yourself. So it’s what you can that you sort yourself with little by little,” he said.

Nigerians have been cautioned by the Nigeria Customs Service to ignore a phony recruiting update that has been making the rounds on social media, claiming it did not come from the Service.
For genuine updates on its operations, including recruitment, the NCS advised the public to rely only on material made available through its official communication channels.
In Nigeria, recruitment scams have been a persistent problem.
Scammers frequently take advantage of the public's interest in government positions by disseminating phony ads and demanding money from gullible candidates.
The Nigeria Customs Service has debunked a fake recruitment notice currently making the rounds on social media, according to a news correspondent.
Security agencies and government bodies have consistently cautioned members of the public against acting on unverified recruitment announcements.
In a statement released on Thursday, the Service said the recruitment update being circulated online did not come from them and was entirely false.
Part of the statement read that the Service wished to make clear that the purported recruitment update spreading on some online platforms was fabricated and had no connection to the Nigeria Customs Service.
The Service urged Nigerians to confirm any such information through its verified channels before sharing or acting on it, adding that the public should ignore the fake publication and rely solely on updates issued through its official communication channels.

According to a news correspondent, presidential spokesman Daniel Bwala was informed by television program anchor Rufai Oseni that he would always be held accountable.

During an operation in Rivers State's Bonny Local Government Area, the Nigerian Navy discovered nine illicit refining facilities and retrieved over 104,000 liters of products thought to be stolen crude oil.
The Navy disclosed this in a statement posted on social media on Thursday, noting that the operation was carried out by members of the Forward Operating Base, FOB, Bonny, under Operation DELTA SENTINEL, following actionable intelligence.
The Navy disclosed that the operation targeted illegal refining infrastructure concealed within the Wakama/Bolo and Aworkiri communities, aimed at stopping suspected cr@de oil thieves from expanding their illicit refining activities.
According to the Navy, operatives uncovered 23 dugout pits spread across the nine illegal refining sites.
Eighteen of these pits held an estimated 104,000 litres of products suspected to be st0len cr@de oil, while five newly dug pits being prepared for refining were destroyed before they could become operational.
The Navy added that personnel also recovered eight locally fabricated refining pots along with three large storage tanks, further disrupting the activities of the suspected oil theft syndicate.
Per the statement, all illegal refining facilities and the products recovered were handled in accordance with existing anti-cr@de oil theft procedures.
The Navy noted that the operation reflects its continued commitment to safeguarding Nigeria's critical oil and gas infrastructure and sustaining the fight against cr@de oil theft in the Niger Delta.]]>
A man allegedly impregnated a minor then gave her a drugged drink to induce abortion, which almost caused her to lose her life.
Activist Israel Joe shared a video of the pregnant 16-year-old girl in hospital, narrating how the 22-year-old man responsible for her pregnancy gave her a drink which she took and then lost consciousness.
Israel Joe alleged that the man responsible was initially arrested but later released with the help of his father.
The activist called on authorities to do the right thing and arrest the man again.

Operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) in Zamfara State, successfully rescued all four remaining kidnapped students of the Federal Polytechnic, Kaura Namoda, Zamfara State.
The students were kidnapped on June 3 at their off-campus hostel in the Low-cost area of Kaura Namoda town after armed bandits stormed the building and seized six of them.
DSS operatives, relying on intelligence, rescued the students, comprising four males and a female late Wednesday without any ransom paid.
One of the kidnappers was arrested during the operation. The others didn't survive.
Following an earlier release of two of the six students, security forces intensified an intelligence-led operation, and surgically secured the safe return of the remaining students to the relief of all.]]>
Presidential spokesman Daniel Bwala has said his past remarks against President Bola Tinubu should no longer dominate public discourse, describing them as “baseless” in the context of current realities while insisting they were never false.
Bwala spoke on Wednesday during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today, where he sparred with anchor Seun Okinbaloye over comments he made about Tinubu before joining the administration.
The presidential aide said he was surprised that the presenter continued to revisit his previous statements instead of discussing issues affecting Nigerians.
“The first person that started asking me this question was you, and you have done that more than five times. Are you not tired?” Bwala asked. “They are completely inconsequential to what is happening.”
He argued that the conversation should have centred on governance, including the economy, education, security and a letter purportedly sent by United States President Donald Trump commending Tinubu’s security efforts.
“We have taken almost 10 minutes on this,” he said. “Nigerian people want to hear tonight what is happening to their lives. They want to know what is happening with their economy, with their education, and most importantly, with security.”
According to Bwala, the Tinubu administration has made notable progress, particularly by improving coordination among the country’s security agencies.
“We have made substantial progress. It is the first time in Nigeria’s history that the leadership of President Bola Tinubu has brought about very strong collaboration,” he said.
When Okinbaloye asked whether describing his former comments as “baseless” meant they were lies, Bwala drew a distinction between the two.
“They are not lies. They are baseless. Not important for conversation,” he said.
Bwala also accused the presenter of giving prominence to opposition talking points while overlooking similar issues involving opposition politicians.
“I’m trying my best not to be aggressive about it, but you’re riding on the opposition’s back horse,” he said.
He cited Labour Party leader Peter Obi as an example, saying, “Peter Obi has since changed parties four times. How many times have you asked their people?”

Dangote Petroleum Refinery has resumed gantry loading of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), also known as petrol, in naira after a week-long suspension, ending uncertainty in the downstream sector over its temporary shift to dollar-denominated sales.
Checks by Vanguard showed that the refinery has fixed its new ex-depot (gantry) price at N1,215 per litre, representing an increase of N140 per litre, or 13.02 per cent, from the previous price of N1,075 per litre.
The increase in the gantry price is directly linked to the sharp rally in global crude oil prices, which has raised the cost of producing refined petroleum products, including petrol, diesel and aviation fuel, heightening concerns over fresh fuel price hikes in Nigeria and other oil-importing countries.
Market data on Wednesday showed that Brent crude, the international benchmark against which Nigeria’s crude is priced, climbed 3.18 per cent to $93.90 per barrel, while West Texas Intermediate (WTI) rose 2.74 per cent to $86.65 per barrel.
The price adjustment also comes at a time when domestic petrol prices have already risen sharply following increases in ex-depot prices by major suppliers, raising fears of another round of increases at filling stations.
The resumption of naira-denominated truck loading is expected to improve product availability after supply disruptions caused by the suspension.
Industry sources confirmed that marketers had been notified of the resumption of gantry operations, with loading set to commence immediately under the revised naira pricing structure.
The development comes barely 24 hours after the 650,000 barrels-per-day refinery resumed coastal loading of petrol at a higher price.
Checks showed that the refinery increased its coastal loading price to $1,161.23 per metric tonne, from $1,044.62 per metric tonne, representing an 11.2 per cent increase.
The refinery’s return to naira pricing for truck loading follows several days of uncertainty in the downstream petroleum market after the suspension forced many independent marketers to source products from private depots.
The disruption tightened supply and pushed ex-depot petrol prices in Lagos to as high as N1,275 per litre, compared with Dangote Refinery’s previous gantry price of N1,075 per litre before sales were suspended.
Before halting product loading, Dangote Refinery attributed the suspension to challenges in securing adequate crude oil supplies under the Federal Government’s naira-for-crude initiative, prompting its temporary switch to dollar-denominated sales.
The refinery’s decision to restore naira transactions is expected to ease supply constraints in the inland market and improve the nationwide distribution of petroleum products.
Already, petrol prices at depots across Nigeria recorded fresh increases on Wednesday, while diesel prices surged sharply in several locations, signaling renewed cost pressures for fuel marketers and transport operators.
Mid-day depot price data for July 22, 2026 showed that the depot price of petrol, rising across major supply hubs including Lagos, Port Harcourt, Warri and Calabar, with some depots raising prices by as much as N87 per litre.
The sharpest increase was recorded at Bulk Strategic Reserve in Lagos, where the ex-depot petrol price jumped by N87 per litre to N1,350 from N1,263.
The increase places the depot among the highest-priced suppliers in the country and could influence retail pump prices if sustained.
Other Lagos depots posted more modest increases. Liquid Bulk, Masters Energy, Matrix and Sigmund all raised petrol prices by between N15 and N17 per litre to N1,280, while TSL did not quote a new price.
Meanwhile, fresh increases in the pump price of petrol, to an average of N1,350 per litre from N1,260 per litre across filling stations in Lagos and its environs have heightened concerns over the rising cost of living, with millions of Nigerians expected to face higher transportation, food and business costs.
Checks by Vanguard showed several retail outlets adjusted their pump prices to between N1,300 per litre and N1,400 per litre following increases in ex-depot prices by depot owners, pushing fuel costs to their highest levels in recent months.

A 45-year-old Nigerian, Okeoghene Patrick Udugba, residing in Frisco, Texas, has been indicted by a US federal grand jury over his alleged involvement in a romance scam and business email compromise scheme that prosecutors say defrauded a US government agency of more than $300,000.
The indictment, announced by the United States Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Pennsylvania, charges Udugba with money laundering and conspiracy to commit wire fraud and mail fraud.
According to US Attorney Brian D. Miller, Udugba and his alleged co-conspirators orchestrated overlapping romance and business email compromise schemes targeting victims in multiple US states.
Prosecutors alleged that the suspects used social media platforms and dating websites to establish fake romantic relationships with victims before grooming them into serving as money mules. The victims allegedly received and cashed fraudulently obtained cheques on behalf of the syndicate.
Authorities further alleged that members of the conspiracy sent emails from spoofed addresses in Nigeria while posing as representatives of the United States Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS).
The emails allegedly directed that FWS grant funds be used to settle fabricated invoices, falsely claiming that the recruited money mules were contractors and consultants who had carried out work on grant-eligible projects.
As a result of the alleged fraudulent emails and invoices, the agency’s grant administrator issued payments exceeding $300,000, according to prosecutors.
The investigation was carried out by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the United States Postal Inspection Service (USPIS), Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) and the Department of the Interior Office of Inspector General. Assistant US Attorney Sarah R. Lloyd is leading the prosecution.
The case is part of the Homeland Security Task Force (HSTF) initiative, established under Executive Order 14159 to combat transnational criminal organisations, fraud networks, human trafficking and other cross-border crimes.
US authorities also said the prosecution supports the Department of Justice’s National Fraud Enforcement Division, launched to strengthen efforts against fraud targeting the American public.
If convicted, Udugba faces a maximum penalty of 30 years in federal prison, followed by supervised release and a fine.

Suspected bandits have abducted six women and one man during a fresh attack on Isa town in Isa Local Government Area of Sokoto State.
The incident was disclosed in a post shared on X on Wednesday by security analyst Bakatsine.
According to Bakatsine, the attackers stormed the Herama area of Isa town on Tuesday night and forcefully took away seven residents.
The victims were identified as six women and one man.
Bakatsine said the attack had left residents of the community in fear, as families of the abducted victims awaited news of their loved ones.

He was speaking on the US President’s letter to President Tinubu.

Abia State University (ABSU) has suspended the Head of its Anatomy Department, Dr. Agbai Johnson Ukwa, as authorities investigate allegations of academic misconduct.
The development was disclosed by education advocate Alex Onyia in a post on X, where he alleged that ongoing investigations have uncovered claims of grade manipulation and other academic irregularities involving the lecturer.
According to Onyia, Dr. Ukwa allegedly demanded as much as ₦1.5 million from MBBS students in exchange for passing examination grades.
He further revealed that the Abia State Government has widened the scope of its investigation, with officials now reviewing students' results and mark sheets spanning the past five years.
"The Abia State Government has intensified its investigation and is reviewing results and mark sheets for all students in the university for the past five years," Onyia wrote.
He added that the review could have far-reaching consequences, including the possible cancellation of some graduates' results if evidence of academic malpractice is established.
"Some graduates' results may be cancelled after this investigation," he stated.
Describing the exercise as unprecedented, Onyia said it could become one of the most comprehensive academic investigations ever carried out at a Nigerian university.
The latest claims build on Onyia's earlier allegations, in which he accused the Anatomy Department head of extorting students before approving their graduation. He alleged that students who refused to pay were threatened with failing grades or missing examination scripts.

Popular TikTok star and livestreamer Habeeb Hamzat, widely known as Peller, has shared the reason he consistently turned down his parents' efforts to make him learn a trade, revealing that he never believed apprenticeship was the path to success.

A yet-to-be-identified woman has lost her life after a devastating fire engulfed a residential building along Ikpa Road in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital, in the early hours of Tuesday, July 21.
According to reports, the woman had reportedly accompanied a man to his residence after the two met at a nightclub earlier that night.
A social media user, Frank Tochukwu Fidelis, who shared details of the incident, said the fire broke out at about 5:30 a.m., destroying property worth millions of naira.
The male occupant of the building was said to have escaped the blaze unharmed, while the woman reportedly became trapped inside. Despite efforts to rescue her, she allegedly died after suffering severe burns.
The exact cause of the fire is yet to be determined, and authorities are expected to launch an investigation to establish what led to the tragic incident.

The Nigerian passport has once again ranked among the least powerful travel documents in Africa, according to the latest Henley Passport Index released in July 2026.
The report places Nigeria 90th in the world and 45th in Africa, with Nigerian passport holders enjoying visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to just 44 destinations worldwide. Nigeria shares the 90th global position with the Democratic Republic of the Congo, leaving only a handful of African nations ranked below it.
Despite making some progress over the past two years, Nigeria's passport remains one of the weakest on the continent. Between January 2024 and April 2026, the country climbed from 95th to 89th in the global rankings. A Federal High Court in Warri, Delta State, has convicted and sentenced 12 people for abusing the naira by spraying the currency during social celebrations.
The convicts — Abimbola Dolapo, Ufuoma Okotie, Samuel Kingsley, Rasaki Ayomide, Ekpmamuku Oghenekewvwe, Abraham Eriata, Favour Onowighose, Karaki Ejioghene, Simeon Sabastine, Valentine Chikeze, Omoyibo Prince, and Akenuwa Osamudiamen — were arraigned by the Benin Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) before Justice Hyeladzira Nganjiwa.
They were prosecuted for tampering with the naira, an offence punishable under the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Act.
According to the EFCC, one of the charges revealed that Akenuwa Osamudiamen sprayed ₦20,000 in ₦200 notes while dancing at a birthday party in January 2025, an act considered a violation of the law regulating the proper handling of Nigeria's currency.
When the charges were read in court, all 12 defendants pleaded guilty. Following their pleas, EFCC prosecuting counsel, Francis Jirbo, urged the court to convict and sentence them. Defence lawyers, however, pleaded for mercy, telling the court that the defendants were remorseful and had learned from their mistakes.
Delivering judgment, Justice Nganjiwa sentenced 11 of the convicts to six months' imprisonment, with the option of paying a ₦150,000 fine each. Akenuwa Osamudiamen received the same six-month jail term but was given the option of paying a ₦200,000 fine instead.
The judge also ordered all 12 convicts to sign written undertakings promising to maintain good conduct and refrain from similar offences in the future.

A Hong Kong court has sentenced 26-year-old British woman, Isabel Rose, to six years in prison after finding her guilty of blackmail and attempting to pervert the course of justice over allegations she made against a British banker.
Rose, who is from south-east London, travelled to Hong Kong in January 2024 to visit the banker after the pair met while travelling in Thailand. She later accused him of molesting her at his apartment and reported the alleged incident to the police.
The banker was arrested following the complaint but was released after investigators examined the evidence. Authorities later charged Rose, alleging that she had fabricated the accusation and attempted to extort money from him.
According to prosecutors, Rose initially demanded £5,000 after the alleged incident before increasing the amount to £100,000. They told the court she threatened to report the banker to the police if he refused to pay. Rose denied the blackmail allegation, insisting the money was meant to cover expenses the banker had offered to pay, including her flights, accommodation, and medical bills.
Although forensic evidence did not conclusively support either side, District Judge Adriana Noelle Tse Ching ruled in favour of the banker. The judge rejected Rose's testimony, concluded that the rape allegation had been fabricated, and said she showed "not an iota of remorse." Describing Rose's conduct as "wicked" and "evil," the judge handed down a six-year prison sentence.
The court also examined WhatsApp conversations exchanged after the alleged incident. In one message, Rose said she felt violated and did not want sex. The banker responded by apologising, explaining that he had been slightly drunk and had misread her signals. During the trial, he maintained that his apology referred to an emotional misunderstanding rather than an admission of rape. The judge also noted that Rose had deleted some messages and used disappearing chats.
Despite the conviction, Rose continues to maintain that she was raped and insists she is innocent. Her spokesperson said she and her family are reviewing their legal options, while the UK's Foreign Office confirmed it is providing consular assistance and remains in contact with both her family and Hong Kong authorities.]]>
United States President Donald Trump has applauded President Bola Tinubu for what he described as his bold and determined leadership in tackling Nigeria's security challenges, particularly terrorism and the violence affecting Christian communities.
In a letter dated July 6, 2026, Trump responded to Tinubu's earlier correspondence, expressing appreciation for the Nigerian leader's message while praising his commitment to improving security across the country.

The deceased, Comrade Nwama Emmanuel Jolly, Chairman of NULGE, Ika South Local Government Council, and Comrade Nnamdi Memeh, Chairman of NULGE, Ika North East Local Government Council, lost their lives on Tuesday, 21 July 2026, while returning from a NULGE meeting held in Orerokpe, the headquarters of Okpe Local Government Area of Delta State.
It was gathered that the two labour leaders had travelled to the meeting by public transport.
On their return journey, they boarded a Toyota Sienna vehicle.
Tragedy struck between 6 and 7pm along the Idumuesah/Owa-Oyibu Road when the driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle while attempting to avoid a collision with a motorcyclist who suddenly rammed into their path.
Eyewitnesses reported that the Sienna somersaulted several times before coming to a stop, leaving several occupants with varying degrees of injuries.
The victims were immediately rushed to the Government General Hospital, Owa-Oyibu, where Comrade Nwama Emmanuel Jolly was confirmed d3ad.
Comrade Nnamdi Memeh, who sustained critical injuries and was on life support, was later referred to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Asaba, and despite efforts by medical personnel to save his life, he also succumbed.

Nigerian fashion designer Veekee James, has spoken up on some of the experiences that shaped her childhood, revealing that she began hustling at a very young age.
The entrepreneur, while speaking in an interview, disclosed that she lost her father before she was five and at a point when her mother was pregnant with her youngest sibling. While recalling her childhood, Veekee stated that her family was forced to rely on the support of relatives.
She also noted that the death of her father made her learn to fend for herself at a very young age.
“Growing up, I had to hustle a lot. My dad died before I was five. In fact, my mum was still pregnant with our last born when my dad died. So, you know, from five years old with no dad. Thank God for my dad’s brothers because they helped us, you know, at least through school. They tried their best. I have been like a hustler since primary school. E no get wetin I dey tell you I no do. I’m not sure say e get any handwork for this world… well, some sha, like all those carpenter works and the rest. In fact, I even follow do that one because there was a time I used to make kolo for saving money,” she said.
Veekee explained that while in primary school, she learnt to render beauty services to her classmates in order to make some money to support herself and her family. She added that despite their difficult circumstances, she refused to be limited by her background.
She added, “I used to make knitted outfits like caps and blouses. I was good in Ajegunle. From there, I started to sell things, started to do hair. I was making hair for like all my classmates in primary school every weekend after school. Even as I dey make hair, I still dey knit. I still dey sew clothes for people.”]]>
The Rivers State Police Command has launched a manhunt for gunmen who killed the Omoku Zonal Commander of the Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Security Planning and Advisory Committee (OSPAC), Mr Ozemela Nwaocha, and three women in a deadly attack in Omoku, headquarters of Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area.
Police spokesperson, ASP Grace Iringe-Koko, who confirmed the incident on Wednesday, described the killings as unfortunate and assured residents that those behind the attack would be tracked down and prosecuted.
She said preliminary investigations indicated that the assailants ambushed Nwaocha near his residence and opened fire on him and three women who were in his company.
“The Rivers State Police Command is aware of this unfortunate incident and is deeply saddened by it. The command condemns this act in its entirety and assures the public that the perpetrators will be brought to justice,” she said.
According to the police, a full-scale investigation has commenced, while residents have been urged to provide credible information that could assist security agencies in identifying and arresting the attackers.
Providing further details, OSPAC spokesman Nkem Godknows said the attack occurred on Tuesday evening in what he described as a “Gestapo-style operation.”
He alleged that the gunmen repeatedly shot the vigilante commander before killing his sister and two other women who were with him.
Godknows added that two other persons sustained gunshot injuries during the attack and are currently receiving treatment in hospital.
“The gunmen also killed Nwaocha’s sister and two other women. Two other persons within the premises sustained gunshot wounds and are receiving treatment,” he said.
He noted that the incident was immediately reported to the police and expressed confidence that the perpetrators would eventually be arrested.
The OSPAC spokesman urged residents to remain calm, saying security agencies and local vigilante groups had intensified efforts to maintain peace and prevent further attacks in the area.
He also appealed to the Rivers State Government and other stakeholders to provide greater support for members of the vigilante organisation, lamenting that many operate under difficult conditions without financial assistance.
According to him, OSPAC operatives receive little or no remuneration despite the risks involved in protecting their communities.
“We are not adequately catered for and receive little or no encouragement to perform our duties. We are not paid, and most of us have no reliable source of income. We appeal for support to enable us to carry out our responsibilities more effectively,” he said.
Meanwhile, security has been reinforced in Omoku, with combined teams of police and other security agencies conducting intensive patrols to maintain law and order as investigations continue into the killings.]]>
Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has declared his support for President Bola Tinubu and the Rainbow Coalition, a political movement led by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Fubara made the declaration on Tuesday during the groundbreaking ceremony for the reconstruction and equipping of the Riven Medical Facility, a public-private sector pharmaceutical factory in Rivers State.
The governor said the prolonged political crisis in the state had come to an end, urging his supporters to unite behind all candidates presented by the coalition.
“I am supporting our Rainbow Coalition. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is our President, and he is the one we are supporting. The governorship candidate is the candidate I am supporting, and anybody who believes in me will support every candidate under the Rainbow Coalition,” Fubara said.
He dismissed suggestions that he should delay aligning with the coalition, insisting that he had already made his choice.
“I am already in the family. I have returned to our family. Give your total support to the coalition. The time of war is over; it is now time for peace, and that peace will take us to another level,” he added.
The governor also ruled out any involvement in activities capable of reigniting political divisions in the state.
“I am not party to anything that will bring any form of disunity in this state. We have done what we need to do, and now we are moving forward,” he said.
Speaking on the Riven Medical Facility project, Fubara reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to its successful execution, saying he agreed to support the investment after receiving assurances on its viability and delivery timeline.
He disclosed that the first phase of the pharmaceutical factory is expected to be completed within three months, describing it as a strategic investment that would promote industrialisation, create employment and position Rivers State as a hub for the production of medical consumables.
According to the governor, the project is expected to stimulate economic activities, attract local and international patronage, and encourage the establishment of complementary industries around the facility.
Fubara pledged the state government’s full support for the investors and urged members of the host community to cooperate with the company to ensure the project’s success.
He also revealed that the state government is currently involved in litigation with several companies over claims exceeding ₦200 billion, stressing that his administration is determined to avoid contractual disputes that could discourage investors.

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, Ogun State Command, has secured the conviction of three drug traffickers in separate cases at the Federal High Court Abeokuta.
This was contained in a statement by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, ASN Haris Musa, made available on Wednesday.
Among those convicted is Fatokun Rahmon, 49, who was arrested on 28 December 2025 in possession of 347 kilograms of Cannabis Sativa.
Upon conclusion of his trial, he was sentenced to 28 years imprisonment.
Also convicted is Ogunnowo Wasiu, 27, who was arrested on 24 April, 2026 with 210 grams of Cannabis Sativa and 1.6 grams of Methamphetamine. The court sentenced him to 10 years imprisonment.
The statement added that one Jesutofumi Adeyemi, who was arrested on 2nd November 2022, with 3,523 kilograms of Cannabis Sativa, was equally convicted and sentenced to 10 years imprisonment.
Reacting to the convictions, the State Commander, Commander Tijjani Rabe, described the judgments as another major victory in the command’s sustained offensive against drug trafficking and organised criminal networks.
The statement quoted the commander to have commended the dedication and professionalism of the officers whose painstaking investigation and diligent prosecution ensured that justice was served.
Rabe reaffirmed the command’s unwavering resolve to pursue drug traffickers relentlessly, dismantle illicit drug networks, and ensure that every offender is brought before the law.
He also urged members of the public to continue partnering with the agency by providing credible and timely intelligence, stressing that collective vigilance remains essential to protecting communities from the menace of illicit drugs.
