Writer, gender studies major, feminist and intelligent babe Izzy Combs started #FreeToMove when she pointed out in her article for Stoney Roads that while Australia’s party community is happy to reject ‘coward punches’ and fight for fewer restrictions on lockout laws, when it comes to sexual assault in clubs, it seems to be accepted as norm. Izzy is trying to spur a change in the culture by starting a conversation, creating a Free To Move handbook and calling out the fact that this is an issue that women have too long put up with.

With social media becoming increasingly intertwined into our personal identities and social lives, young girls and boys are using it to gain validation. The trend of “Am I ugly or pretty” videos sees tween-aged girls – and some boys – detail being told they are ugly by school friends before putting the question of its truth to the unforgiving internet. Similar to this over sharing of incredibly personal stories is the trend in ‘beautiful suffering’, where melancholy, depression, eating disorders and self harm are blogged, posted and shared online as a badge of honour or cry for help. But why are these tweens and teens imbuing complete strangers with the determination of their self worth? In this episode, The Gladies look at the Millennial generation’s desperation to share, along with the new dating app Lulu, and the horror of the viral article Five reasons to date a girl with an eating disorder by Return of Kings.

Joseph Gorden-Levitt’s new film Don Jon explores how porn shapes male gender roles, pressuring them to be the dominating porn star by the bedroom and yet a sensitive romantic outside it (virgin/whore complex anyone??).  With this we lead into a discussion on the expectations for men and women in relationships, the first Saudi Arabian film to be supported by it’s government in an American market (directed by a woman!), and the experiences of transgendered Nepali prostitutes.
