A Day at the Imperia Spa, Gleddoch Golf and Spa Resort

Last month I spent a day at the newly refurbished Imperia Spa at Gleddoch Golf and Spa Resort, and it was exactly what I needed. You know that point when work, life and weather all pile up at once and you just need to escape somewhere peaceful? That was me. So, I booked a spa day, grabbed my partner, and off we went to Langbank for some proper relaxation.

It’s only about twenty minutes from Glasgow but feels much further once you’re there. The drive through the Renfrewshire hills is beautiful, and when you finally reach the hotel you can see the Clyde Estuary stretching out below. You instantly feel calmer.

First Impressions

When we arrived, we checked in and filled out our treatment forms while enjoying a complimentary health smoothie, which was a lovely touch.

The spa itself is absolutely stunning. All calm neutrals, soft textures and elegant details. The first thing you notice is how fresh and modern it feels: plush curved chairs, pale marble floors, warm lighting and gold accents that make the whole space glow. It’s luxurious without being over the top — more quiet sophistication with a touch of Scandi calm. Everything feels beautifully thought out, from the cosy seating areas to the sleek locker rooms with Dyson hairdryers, marble vanity stations and golden taps that make even getting ready feel like a treat.

Once we were in our robes (and I can confirm they are extremely fluffy), we had a little wander around before heading for our treatments.

Treatments

I chose the 30-minute Elemis Back, Neck & Shoulders Massage (£65), and it was absolutely lovely. My therapist checked the pressure before starting, and it was just right - enough to ease the tension but still deeply relaxing. I could have happily stayed there for another hour.

My partner had the Temple Spa version of the same treatment (also £65 for 30 minutes) and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Afterwards, we spent some time in the relaxation area, which has heated waterbeds that are so comfortable I could easily have fallen asleep there for the rest of the day.

Thermal and Spa Experiences

The main pool area is beautiful: dark, dramatic and very photogenic. The ceiling is almost like a mirror, which makes it feel enormous. It’s the kind of space where you can float around for ages and properly unwind — although I did manage a couple of lengths for health purposes, of course.

My favourite feature was the sensory shower. I know that sounds simple when there’s a huge sauna and jacuzzi pool, but it was brilliant. You can adjust the temperature, scents and even the type of “rain” it sprays, and I kept going back because it was so refreshing.

The thermal area is equally impressive. There’s a Himalayan salt sauna, two steam rooms, an ice fountain and heated loungers. You can just drift between them and lose track of time — it’s the kind of place that slows you down without you even realising it.

The outdoor panorama spa was having some work done when I visited, so I didn’t get to try it this time, but everything else was perfect. I’ll definitely be back to experience it when it reopens because the views from outside are incredible.

Dining and Details

We didn’t eat in the spa this time as we had a reservation at the nearby Coast, Langbank, later in the afternoon, but a few weeks earlier I went to the launch party and tried some of the menu. It was delicious, with plenty of vegetarian options too, which I always appreciate. Everything was beautifully presented and full of flavour, and I’d definitely plan to have a proper spa lunch next time I visit.

We did have a few drinks poolside though, which was lovely. The bar is accessible directly from the spa so you don’t need to leave your robes. I had a little glass of pink fizz and my partner had a fancy coffee — the perfect mid-afternoon pick-me-up.

Final Thoughts

I absolutely loved my day at Imperia Spa. The space feels calm, modern and properly luxurious without being intimidating. The facilities are fantastic, the staff were lovely and the whole place has a really peaceful, welcoming atmosphere.

It’s close enough to Glasgow for an easy day trip but far enough away to feel like a proper escape. Prices reflect the high-end setting, but the quality of the experience makes it well worth it.

If you’re planning a visit, book your treatments in advance, give yourself plenty of time to enjoy the thermal areas and don’t rush through it. Bring a book, take your time getting ready at the gorgeous vanity stations and just switch off for a while.

I left feeling lighter, calmer and completely reset. Exactly what a good spa day should do.

My Experience:

Book Review: Liane Moriarty’s Here One Moment – A Mesmerizing Tapestry of Lives Intertwined

I’ve just finished an advance copy of Here One Moment by Liane Moriarty, and wow, this book is something else! If you’re in the mood for a novel that’ll sweep you off your feet with its blend of everyday moments and the extraordinary, then you’ve got to add this one to your reading list.

The story kicks off with an eclectic mix of characters—a flight attendant on her birthday, a stressed-out mum, a pair of honeymooners, and many more. They’re all just living their lives, thinking they know what’s ahead. But then, out of nowhere, an elderly woman steps into their worlds and delivers a chilling prediction to each of them. Is she a mystical clairvoyant, or just a troublemaker? Honestly, that’s part of the thrill—you’re never quite sure!

Moriarty is a master of suspense, and the way she ties these strangers together through this mysterious figure is pure genius. The plot dances between hope and dread, showing how a single moment can ripple through the lives of many. The way each character grapples with their existential crisis feels so real and raw, you’ll be on the edge of your seat, questioning everything. The message is about living your life to the fullest and living in the moment.

I won't give too much of the plot away but it's very different to some of the authors previous novels like Big Little Lies. I was expecting a Thriller but this was quite a different, and nice, surprise. This is one of those books that you won’t be able to put down, and when you do, it’ll leave you thinking long after the last page. It’s the perfect blend of suspense, emotion, and that signature Moriarty wit. So, get cozy, grab your favorite blanket, and dive into Here One Moment. You won’t regret it!

Today, I’m excited to share my experience with two of their key products from the Cold Plasma + range. The Daily Defense Moisturiser and the Intensive Gel Mask. I've been trying out both of these for a few weeks in place of my usual day and night moisturiser to give them a good go.

My Experience:

From the first application, I was impressed by the lightweight, non-greasy formula. It absorbs quickly, leaving a smooth finish that’s perfect under makeup. The SPF 35 is a big plus for someone with fair skin like me and conscious of sun damage (even in Scotland).

What truly sets this moisturiser apart is its ability to improve skin texture. After just a week of use, I noticed a significant reduction in the appearance of fine lines around my eyes and mouth. My skin felt smoother and more resilient, with a noticeable radiance that had friends asking if I’d had a facial!

How to Use:

After cleansing and toning, apply a generous amount to your face and neck. Don’t forget those delicate areas that need extra love. Follow with your usual makeup routine or enjoy your bare-faced beauty.

Intensive Gel Mask (£82.00 for 59ml)

Next, let's talk about the Cold Plasma Plus + Intensive Gel Mask. This product is designed to work its magic while you sleep, and who doesn't love waking up to beautiful skin?

I applied this moisturiser every night for two weeks, and I've been really impressed so far. My skin felt firmer, looked brighter, and small lines around my forehead and eyes seemed to diminish. The deep hydration it provides has been wonderful making my skin look and feel like I’d just had a full eight hours of sleep (even on nights I hadn’t).

How to Use:

Reading is something I enjoy a lot and have been trying to make as much time as possible for recently. I find it very relaxing and I much prefer a proper, physical book over audiobook or digital copy any day. I love to get cosy and light a candle and get stuck in to the pages. I've always got a pile at the side of my bed to work my way through and have recently finished a couple of great reads which I'm sharing with you today.

First up is a new book, The Last Girl to Die by Helen Fields, this is out on September 1 and is available to pre-order on Amazon now. The Last Girl to Die is the first book I've read by @helenfields_author and will definitely not be the last.

In search of a new life, seventeen-year-old Adriana Clark’s family moves to the ancient, ocean-battered Isle of Mull, far off the coast of Scotland. Then she goes missing. Faced with hostile locals and indifferent police, her desperate parents turn to private investigator Sadie Levesque.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this and found the twists and 'what if's' really gripping. Sadie is a great character. The Last Girl to Die is a standalone novel however the author has several other books including a crime series featuring DI Callanach which I'm looking forward to starting, I'm going to save them for my holiday next month.

The Mad Women's Ball by Victoria Mas appeared as a suggestion on my Amazon account and I'm very glad it did. This book is an English translation from the original which was written in French (and is also a 2021 film available on Prime Video).

It's a fairly short book of just over 100 pages. Set in Paris in 1885, The Mad Women’s Ball tells the story of four women at the Salpêtrière Asylum, a hospital for lunatics, hysterics and epileptics, in the run up to their annual Lenten Ball. One of the women, Eugenie has been taken to the Asylum unexpectedly by her father because she appears to see spirits. What is also apparent is that she shouldn't really be there.

I enjoyed this but read it very quickly, I'd like to read the French version and also watch the film as I'm not sure if the story loses a little in translation.

I read Girl A by Abigail Dean on my last holiday about a month ago. It's something I wouldn't normally pick up but this really piqued my interest. It reminded me a lot of the real life Turpin family case. Girl A is a mystery thriller revolving around the Gracie family.

Each chapter of the book follows one of the characters, the chapters are all fairly long.

Lex Gracie, or Girl A as she is known in the press, grew up with her family on the moors. She escaped when she was fifteen years old but something is calling her back.

I must admit I guessed the twist fairly quickly however It didn't make the book any less good. I didn't want to put this down and can see why it was chosen as the best book in 2021 in a lot of categories and publications, I fully expect to see this remade as a Hollywood film in the future.

Cult British Beauty brand Charlotte Tilbury beauty, created by the celebrity makeup artist herself is a brand I love and use products from daily. Charlotte and I have similar skintones and hair colour so I know that the products she creates will look good on my skin. The range is also quite inclusive so there should be products to suit everyone.

Every once in a while, the brand launch mystery boxes which contain a variety of beauty and skincare products that remain a mystery until opened.

I really enjoy using Charlotte Tilbury products and also like getting gifts, so I like to treat myself when the mystery boxes launch, its almost like getting a lovely little surprise present (to me, from me). I've had quite a few of the mystery boxes in the past few years and I'm yet to be disappointed. It's a great way to try out new products or products you normally wouldn't buy.

This time around there were two mystery boxes, one featuring makeup and one with skincare. Unfortunately the boxes are now discontinued but maybe you'll be lucky enough to get one for a special occasion or find it under the tree this year.

I find the boxes are all of similar quality and contents so I'm sharing these to help you make a choice about picking some up in future.

Charlotte Tilbury Makeup to Mesmerise Mystery Box August 2022

Charlotte Tilbury Brow Fix Clear Brow Gel - worth £22. Not the most exciting product but its really good and a staple in makeup bags that I tend to forget about. Great for creating a temporary laminated brow look.

Charlotte Tilbury Instant Eye Palette Smokey Eyes Are Forever - worth around £60. This is probably one of the best products I've received in a mystery box. I have several of the individual quad Charlotte Tilbury palettes in the past but nothing as big as this palette. It is handily split into four different styles however you can mix and match the colours and shades as you wish. These are all buttery soft and have great colour payoff, a mix of mattes and shimmers are included.

Charlotte Tilbury Cheek To Chic - Swish & Pop Blusher in Sex on Fire- worth £32. I know a lot of people have been a little disappointed with this product however having very pale skin, this works really well on me. I think this is a great everyday colour but would skip this product if you have a darker skin tone. There will be another of the Swish and Pop Blusher's for you rather than this shade.

Charlotte Tilbury Tinted Love - Lip and Cheek Tint in Bohemian Kiss - worth £25. This isn't a product I'd have picked up in the past however having had one in a previous mystery box in another shade I was really pleased to get this. I'm not a big fan of lipstick as find they smudge a lot on me so this stain is perfect. It looks great on cheeks too. A great multi-use product.

Charlotte Tilbury Eyes To Mesmerise Long Lasting Eye Colour in Walk Of No Shame - worth £25. Walk of Shame is my favourite range from Charlotte Tilbury at the moment, I love the coppery red tones and think it looks lovely on eyes and cheeks. I have a few of the little cream eyeshadow pots and they are great products that last ages. They dry quickly without smudging too.

Charlotte Tilbury Hyularanic Happikiss balm in Happiberry - worth £26. Again, I've had one of these products before in a mystery box. This one is a little dark for me personally but its a nice product. These would be great gift for a teenager, they have the comfort feel of a balm but the colour payoff of a lipstick.

Charlotte Tilbury Brightening Youth Glow Primer - £40.00 . I have a couple of these already and use both the wonderglow and youth glow in my daily makeup. They are beautiful products that help create that lit-from-within glow.

Charlotte Tilbury Magic Cream Light - £75.00 . I wanted so much to love the Charlotte Tilbury Magic Cream, its so good but it really stings my eyes, its such a great product but doesn't do well for me. The Magic Cream Light on the other hand works much better for me and doesn't make my eyes water. I really like using this. It's a great size too.

Charlotte Tilbury Collagen Lip Bath in Walk of No Shame - £26.00. I have a couple of the Collagen Lip Bath lipglosses and I really like using them. They have a minty, plumping effect and aren't sticky or too glossy. Really nice products and this is a great colour.

Charlotte Tilbury Super Radiance Resurfacing Facial Exfoliator (+ mini Magic Serum Crystal Elixer) - £52.00 . I have been wanting to try this for ages I love Charlotte Tilbury Face Masks and use the Baby Skin Goddess Mask a lot. This one is an acid exfoliator that you can use once a week and leaves the skin glowing and soft. This comes with a mini version of the magic serum to try too which is a total bargain.

Charlotte Tilbury Instant Magic Facial Dry Sheet Mask - £18.00. I've been wanting to try this for a while now. I hadn't realised it was both reusable and also a dry mask rather than a wet mask. I'm going to save this to take with me on holiday in a few weeks to try out.

Make a festival flower crown with me with Bloomlocal flowers

I love having flowers around the house in summer to help brighten the place up a little, particularly in summer. It's such a delight to come home to a bright bouquet on my dining room table or at my kitchen window.

I often find that I don't have time to go to a florist in-person and supermarket flowers just never seem to last as long as I'd like, so I often buy my fresh flowers online.

My favourite flowers are normally a mix of purple daisies and sunflowers. I think the contrast of the yellow and purple hues with green stems is just a lovely mix. I found that the Bloomlocal Summer Holiday Bouquet is a perfect match for me. This contains an assortment of cottage garden favourites including sunflowers, daisies, asters roses and stocks.

Although mostly I like to display my flowers in a traditional vase, I do like to have fun with my flowers and use them in different ways. Accessorizing with flowers, particularly for events like festivals is one of my favourite things to do.

Using the flowers from the Summer Holiday bouquet I've created a flower crown that's easy to do, even for someone like me who isn't exactly crafty.

I picked some of the daisies and greenery from the bouquet as wanted something simple for a festival-themed garden party - I kept the rest of the bouquet on display and they lasted over a week when I followed the care instructions making sure to use the flower food provided and change the water.

To make the crown, I took a thin, elastic hairband I already had at home and cut the flowers down to size. Then I carefully wrapped the hairband around the stems and secured them with hair grips and some thin thread. Then attach the hairband to your head and arrange the flower further to suit the shape of your face/head. I spaced the daisies out a little but you could add as many as you like. I also added a few extra hair grips to keep the crown secure.

This was perfect for my party and something I'd definitely wear next time I go to Glastonbury. Bloomlocal flowers would be so handy for this as they last really well and you could arrange for them to be delivered to you the day before the festival.

Christmas Gift Guide 2021 - beauty and lifestyle

In this year's gift guide I'm sharing some things that I've really been enjoying and think would make great gifts for other people. I'd love to wake up on Christmas morning to any of these in wrapped up under the tree and hope you would too.

Firstly, Christmas wouldn't be Christmas without my house smelling nice and cosy and Shearer Candles have released some absolutely gorgeous festive scents this year.

Shearer is a Glasgow based, family owned, candle company where I've recently had the pleasure of visiting their new store in St.Enoch Centre.

Some of my top picks this year are the 'Tis the Season' Diffuser (£25.00) which is a perfect mix of festive pear and pomegranate and Deck the Halls triple wick candle (£20.00) which is a lovely warm apple scent. I use these products most days and love the way they make my skin feel. I try not to wear too much makeup daily but find wearing this combination gives a nice glow without being heavy.

The Midnight Library by Matt Haig - I actually haven't finished reading this yet but I've heard such lovely things about this book and waiting to get stuck in over Christmas.

Fear Street: The Beginning by R.L. Stine - I've been enjoying the nostalgia of pre-mobile and internet horror books. The Fear Street books are a fun, short reads that are great for cosy winter days.

Top tips for applying false lashes - even if you wear glasses

I don't know about you but when it comes to make up, anything without false lashes just seems unfinished so finding yourself the perfect pair is a must! Thinking back to my Makeup Artist days I remember having a kit stocked full of Ardell lashes as they were always both affordable, and great quality lashes for clients.

Over the years I've used so many different types of lashes equally for my own personal use as well as clients and for a whole range of situations such as daily wear, long-wear, bridal or glam events. For any occasion, it's important to find the right lashes for you.

Luckily, Ardell have got you covered - or your lashes at least - with a huge range of lashes for any occasion. The brand is famous for their cult classic Wispies range of lashes as well as their Invisiband technology for seamless, comfortable wear.

For everyday wear, the Ardell naked lashes are your besties! This is my favourite type of lash; they look very natural but help open up the eyes. Glasses wearer like me? No problem, the Ardell natural lashes are perfect for you. Their shorter length and slight taper to the inner corner mean they won't hit your lenses yet still offer that flared-out look.

Application of false lashes is also very important, you want to make sure they are fitted correctly for two reasons, firstly, comfort. If your lashes aren't comfortable to wear this won't be nice and can ruin your makeup if your eyes start to water. Secondly, they won't look good, a beautiful makeup look can be ruined completely by ill-fitting lashes as they can start to fall off or overhang the corners of the eyes.

I've made some of these mistakes myself, so I've prepared some of my top tips for applying false lashes, so you don't have to.

Know your eye shape - Are your eyes rounded, or more almond shape? Hooded or wide? This all matters when picking the perfect false eyelashes. Lashes that are longer on the outside are great for smaller eyes and almond shapes can be balanced out by lashes that are longer in the centre.

Cut your lashes to fit - Before applying glue to your lashes you should 'try them on', hold the lashes up to your eye as if you were applying them and check that the length is ok. They shouldn't go beyond your normal lash line on either your inner or outer corners. Always cut lashes from the inner corners rather than the outer to keep them neat. You can add the offcuts to your lower lash line for a more dramatic look. Drama not your thing? Lashes that are longer in the centre, can also be cut in half and used as half lashes for a softer look.

Invest in a good glue - There is nothing worse than lashes coming unstuck or falling off part through wear. The best glue I've used is Duo Glue, which is handily provided with all Ardell lashes, it even comes in black which is great for smoky looks. When applying glue, you can do it directly from the tube or by using the end of a makeup brush - don't use a cotton bud as fibres can stick to the glue and irritate your eyes. Make sure you leave the glue on for at least 30 seconds or until it becomes translucent before applying. Essentials for lash application including glue are available at Boots.

Use tools and mascara - Before applying false lashes I always curl my real lashes to help them blend with my own. I also use a lash applicator to apply as I find the glue can stick on your finger then stick to the lashes during application which can ruin the look. Although you can wear lashes on their own, it’s a good idea to apply mascara too as it helps the lashes blend in with your own natural lashes. I prefer to apply a thin coat before adding the lashes then blending the lashes into my own with the excess still on the brush.

Lash care - Did you know that lashes aren't made for single use? It's very easy to clean your lashes and you can get several uses out them if you take care of them. After careful removal, I find the best way to clean them is to soak two cotton pads in waterproof eye makeup remover and place the lashes individually between each and press for a minute or so. Gently slide the cotton pads away from the lashes and check all glue has come off. When they are clean you can place them back into the box or bend slightly round a pencil or makeup brush to help keep their shape.

Urban Decay Wild West Palette

Hands up who loves an Urban Decay Naked palette? I know I do and I've really loved the Urban Decay Naked Wild West palette recently.

I've been using this a lot and really looking forward to getting my hands on the newest product the Urban Decay Naked Cyber and trying it out alongside this one.

The Naked Wild West palette includes 12 desert inspired shades ranging from peach and brows to deep blue-green and turquoises. Its a mix of matte, shimmer and glitter formulas and is Urban Decay's first all-vegan formula eyeshadow (as well as including a vegan double-ended brush).

For me, Wild West has been the strongest palette release since Honey. I did like Ultraviolet and Cherry however get much more use out of warmer toned shades.

A few weeks ago I started using some new products by the brand Florena.

Blistex Lip Infusions

I've spoken about my love for Blistex products a lot over the years. I rarely use other lip care brands as I'm yet to find another that is consistently as good.

My absolute favourite lip product was the Blistex Relief Cream and I must note that for now, it's sadly unavailable. Blistex have posted about this on their social channels to advise that due to manufacturing issues it us currently unavailable with no clear return date.

I like to mix and match depending on how my lips are feeling day to day.

Lip Infusions Hydration contains hyaluronic spheres to lock in hydration for up to 24 hours, I think this is probably my favourite of the three new products, it has a light citrus/coconut scent and I can confirm my lips feel very moisturised after use. Hydration also contains an SPF 15.

Lip Infusions Nourish contains beeswax and coconut oil to condition and protect your lips. Botanical oils and vitamin E smooth without that greasy feeling. Nourish contains an SPF 15 and has a berry/watermelon scent.

Lip Infusions Soothing is gentle on lips and tough on dryness. It contains cucumber and calendula to help soothe chapped lips. Soothing has an almost spa-like cucumber/melon scent, if you prefer less scented products then this one is for you.

Lush Lashes - your new everyday mascara

I think that if I had to only have one makeup product to use for the rest of my life I'd definitely choose mascara. I like to think I'm a bit of a mascara connoisseur and admittedly, at any given time I've got at least three or four different products open at the same time.

I remember when I was younger and swearing by using two, always Maybelline Great Lash first for volume and then L'Oreal Telescopic to separate my lashes with the spiky little brush. Now, I feel I can say, with confidence, that I have tried the majority of mascaras that have been on the market so I feel quite qualified to give an honest opinion of anything new.

The latest mascara to land in my makeup drawer surprisingly is from Lush. Lush is known for their wide range of bath and shower products but did you know they also have a makeup range? Lush Lashes is the brand new, low preservative, jet black mascara that harnesses the benefits or natural, lash conditioning ingredients to deliver volume and luscious lengths.

The packaging is very minimalist and entirely reminiscent of the rest of the Lush packaged product range. It contains ingredients like coconut oil (to soften), wheatgrass (to condition), beeswax (to help hold the curl) and rosemary (natural antiseptic).

I have very straight lashes naturally so my absolute must do step in my makeup routine is curl my lashes - make sure you do this, it really makes a huge difference - In the interest of transparency I do tint my lashes very black and after trying this mascara have given myself a lash lift. I do all my beauty treatments (where possible) myself as I'm qualified to, I'll share details of this treatment soon but would recommend waiting til the salons open before this, your beauty salon needs you!

The Lush Lashes mascara really is jet black. I will say, if you are looking for a really impact-full, full volume mascara then you should skip this. If you love a natural, but lengthening, mascara that really helps to separate and define the lashes then this one is absolutely for you.This mascara has a very straight, spiky brush so applies thinly and evenly without clumping. It's more of an everyday mascara than a night out product and 100% one of the best I've tried for bottom lashes. It doesn't smudge or flake with wear but removes easily with miscellar water, although I will note that, as with most mascaras, if you tend to get oily around the eye area then this may vary.

My staycation plans for... (hopefully) 2021

One of the things I think I miss most about pre-pandemic life is the little trips away. Unfortunately at the moment in the UK we are still subject to travel restrictions. Travel outside of the local area isn't allowed yet, but with the recent changes to the roadmap out of lockdown hopefully over the coming months things will look a little different although holidays abroad still seem like a distant dream.

With a toddler its a lot easier to plan a shorter stay-cation break in the UK. At the top of my list is revisiting London, Liverpool and Manchester as well as booking a lodge or two on a holiday park.

The last holiday we went on was to Blackpool in September 2020, it was nice and relaxing but definitely missed being able to plan proper holiday activities.

I've been making plans in my head for some of the places I'd like to visit as soon as its safer and we are allowed to travel. I'm really looking forward to actually having a night away in a hotel. I miss that lovely feeling of slipping on a cosy bathrobe and chilling on a king-size bed. I also can't wait to get back to a hotel spa and doing some serious relaxing.

London

I can't wait to go back and visit the Warner Brothers, Harry Potter Studio Tour. We visited a few years ago for my birthday and I'm so excited to take Liam when he is old enough, he's only two just now so a little too young but I think he's still enjoy looking at all the magical items and seeing the vehicles from the movie. I know he'd absolutely love the Knight Bus and seeing the famous flying car.

I also really miss going to see shows in the West End. We saw Wicked last time and as soon as we are allowed I'll be booking up for Aladdin and Les Miserables.

Manchester

Manchester is such a big and vibrant city, I really miss having a proper wander around the shops and a visit to the Trafford Centre has been on my mind for a long time - my favorite part is probably the food court if I'm honest. If you haven't seen it its really quite interesting and was featured in some of the early Gok Wan tv shows. The centre is full of great shops and has the nearest Selfridges to me in Scotland, on my last trip there I picked up a new Vivienne Westwood bag and I'm definitely due an upgrade. As well as shopping Manchester has some of the UK's best nightlife, a trip to Canal Street or Deanston Locks is sure to be a night to remember.

Liverpool

I've only visited Liverpool once for a short trip as part of a hen weekend a few years ago. I really enjoyed the vibe of the city. I wasn't able to do all of the typical tourist-y things when I visited so I'd love to go back for the full city experience. On my last visit I took a trip on an open top bus which was a great way to see the city, the Beatles museum and taking a ferry across the Mersey are a must for my next trip

Let's Nip Cervical Cancer in the Bud!

Did you know that in Scotland, cervical cancer is the most common cancer in women under 35? Six women are diagnosed with the disease every week.
I wrote about my experience with it a few years ago when I issued a plea to get yourself booked in for a smear and following Scotland's new 'Flower' campaign I'm urging you all to not to ignore your next invitation and help 'nip it in the bud'.

The campaign video encourages women aged 25-34 living in Scotland not to ignore their next smear invite or to contact their GP to make an appointment if they've missed their last smear. In 2017/18, one in three women didn't attend their smear invitation.
The 'Flower' aims to encourage discussion about smears and cervical health as many women feel embarrassed discussing this but 'flower' gets them talking. It's not about scaremongering but more about empowering people to go and get it done.

A smear test is not the most pleasant procedure to have done, I'll agree with that wholeheartedly, however it is one of the most important procedures to have done and I'd strongly encourage everyone to do so.

The procedure, which detects cells which can cause cancer, usually takes about 5-10 minutes in all and usually is done by a nurse. You can bring a friend or relative into the room if you are nervous.
You will be asked to lie on the bed and bend your knees to the sides with you ankles together while a nurse inserts a speculum then a small brush (a little like a funny mascara brush) which is swirled around the cervix to collect a sample of cells. It can be a little uncomfortable but lasts only a few minutes. You might bleed a little afterwards and may even have a bit of cramping but a few paracetamol can help with that.

My own smear, a few years ago, detected abnormalities which I needed treatment for. The LLETZ treatment I had meant that I had to deliver my son via C-section but the alternative doesn't bear thinking about - this is also quite unusual but important to mention as although I had complications, the smear quite literally could have saved my life.

Many people feel worried, anxious or embarrassed about having a smear done, this campaign is about empowerment to talk about and book a smear. Even the thought of smears can be terrifying for some people due to previous trauma, abuse, simply not having enough information or worrying about the results, which can lead to people not attending. It's ok if you feel like it's something you can't do right now however a smear is so important and could save your life. If this is you, I'd encourage you to speak to a trusted friend or family member and visit the Jo's Trust website as it's full of information, guidance and support to help you. I found the information invaluable when I needed some myself.

Although in Scotland we are invited for smears from age 25, it's very important to contact your GP right away if you have any unusual symptoms at any age as smears can be arranged before 25 if you have concerns, just speak to your GP or practice nurse and don't take no for an answer if you are worried.

Remember, a smear test can help detect cervical cancer before it starts. Don't ignore your next smear invite and if you've missed your last smear test, contact your GP practice to find a time that suits you - Let's nip cervical cancer in the bud!

Exploring Aberdeen with Citi Hotel

Last weekend we took Liam for his first trip away to explore Aberdeen and stay at the Citi Hotel Aberdeen. Affectionately known as the Granite City due to the vast amounts of locally quarried grey stone used in many of the cities buildings. It actually sparkles a little in the light which makes it very pretty in the sunshine.

I've visited Aberdeen twice before but never actually wandered around the city centre. Michelle and I stayed in the beautiful Ardoe House Hotel and Kevin and I went to Enjoy Music Festival in Hazelhead Park in August last year (we stayed in the nearby Village Hotel).

We were looking forward to exploring the city itself so packed up the car and set off. It takes around 3/4 hours to get from our house to Aberdeen but the drive is pleasant taking in some of Scotland's lovely countryside. We had to stop on the way to give Liam a break from being in the car seat for too long but he slept most of the way.

Collage Street car park right next to Union Square shopping centre was very handy and right next to our hotel. It costs £6 for 24 hours provided you park on levels 9-11 which is pretty good for city centre parking.

Citi Hotel and Hostel kindly put us up for the evening in a double room and provided a travel cot for Liam (although we brought his own clip in part so he was a little higher up).
I can't fault the hotel location, its very central, right next to the train station, car park and shopping centres, bars and restaurants in the heart of the city itself. It's a great base for those wanting to get out and about and see what Aberdeen has to offer.
Citi Hotel and Hostel offers both private hotel rooms (double, single, twin or family) with en suite bathrooms and hostel style rooms where you can book the entire room or just one bed for the evening. This would be great for bigger groups visiting the city.

We arrived around 3pm for check-in and popped out to the nearby co-op for some drinks and snacks while we got ready to go for dinner at Molly's Bistro in the Aberdeen Douglas Hotel just around the corner. Citi Hotel doesn't have a restaurant or offer breakfast but there is a little shop at reception selling juice and snacks.

Our room was clean but basic with a double bed, large TV with freeview, desk, full length mirror and iron as well as tea/coffee making facilities and free wifi throughout the hotel. The large bathroom had a full size bath and shower. The room was quite big and Liam's travel cot fit comfortably next to the bed.
My only complaints about the room and bathroom was that it didn't quite seem finished. For a brand new hotel that opened late 2018 I would have expected the paint job and fixtures/fittings to be perfect but some of the paintwork could use touching up and the bathroom flooring wasn't fitted correctly around the edges. The shower also was a little temperamental but once it got going was powerful enough.

There is a nightclub next door to the hotel, we were at the topmost floor and could still hear noises from people leaving at closing time, not a huge problem for us and to be expected from a hotel in a busy city centre. Reception provide free earplugs if you need them too. Overall we both had a great sleep as the bed was very comfortable.

Once we were comfortable in the hotel we had a quick walk round the corner to Molly's Bistro in the nearby Aberdeen Douglas Hotel for dinner. The restaurant was lovely and catered well for vegetarians like me as well as meat eaters. As Aberdeen is famous for its locally sourced seafood Kevin went for the mussels for his starter and I had a spinach and feta tart. For mains we had mushroom stroganoff and Irish lamb stew then to finish Kevin went for the recommended sticky toffee pudding while I struggled to finish the delicious banana cheesecake. The food prices were very reasonable and Molly's would be great for larger groups or family meals. Liam slept all through dinner which was lovely as we managed to both eat at the same time which is a rarity for us these days with a small child.

After dinner we went back to the hotel and watched some Saturday night tv and chilled out, it was nice to just sit and relax and Liam enjoyed playing with his beloved Lamaze Freddie the Firefly toy in his cot.
The following morning Kevjn popped round the corner and got us a McDonald's breakfast which we ate in the room before checking out at 11am.
It was a cold but sunny Sunday so we dropped the bags off at the car, wrapped up warm and had a walk around Aberdeen.

We visited the Kirk of St. Nicholas and had a wander round the old cemetery, the historic building dates back to at least 1170 and is the final resting place of many famous Aberdonians.

We also had a look around the Trinity Centre which has shops such as Superdrug and Primark and also Union Square which is a huge centre with shops on the ground floor and restaurants and cinema on the upper floor. We weren't hungry enough for a proper meal so ourselves a Subway and headed back to the car for the drive back home.
On the way out of Aberdeen there is a huge park with massive slides which we really wanted to have a look in but it was getting a little chilly for Liam so we'll add that to the itinerary for next time, we can't wait to go back!

For the price and location I would definitely recommend Citi Hotel Aberdeen. Kevin and I are already planning a trip back to the city on our own and very likely will book the hotel again as it's a fantastic base to get your head down after a long day and night exploring Aberdeen.

Pros: Great, central location close to all amenities and large, clean comfortable room.
Cons: Slightly noisy after nightclub closing, decor a little unfinished, very small lift (potentially due to building restrictions)

New Fragrances for the New Year and Valentine's Day

The smell of different perfumes always brings back great memories to me and I love to start each year off using something new. I also use a new one when I go on holiday or have a special event so that each time I smell it I'm instantly transported back to that happy time.

There are a lot of amazing fragrances out at the moment for both men and women and I'm really looking forward to sharing some of my top picks for 2019 with you.

First up is DKNY's newest kid on the block, DNKY Stories (£43.50 - £79.50). DKNY fragrances are usually known for their iconic apple shaped bottles, but Stories has had a city slick new makeover and focuses on the New York skyline and a slightly more grown up glass bottle.
Inspired by the endless possibilities of New York City and the freedom to make it your own, DKNY Stories is alive with the inspiration of a new generation of dynamic women - living inventing and re-inventing themselves and their stories.
DKNY Stories eau de parfum could be described as fl-oriental, slightly floral with a modern, almost spicy edge, each time you wear it, the fragrance re-invents itself in the sense you can pick out a different fragrance note which I love.

For lovers of the Big Apple style bottles, fear not, as some new releases of these are set for 2019 too. The DKNY Pool Party collection comes out early February and features delicious scents Mai Tai, Bay Breeze and Lime Mojito... yum.

Aramis is one of my absolute favourite male grooming brands. I love the rich, masculine scents and the newest fragrance, Aramis Tobacco Reserve eau de parfum (£50 - £70) is a delight.
Inspired by the finest tobacco from Havana and the fine things a man seeks in life, Tobacco Reserve is alluring, warm and bold with notes of Tobacco, Clary Sage and the subtle sweetness of Tonka Bean.
My partner really enjoyed wearing this and to be honest I've had a sneaky go of it myself, its just lovely.

Buy this if you like: Warm, slightly sweet tobacco scents.

Some Scents to look out for coming soon are Michael Kors Sparkling Blush and Tory Burch Fou de Toi Love Relentlessly launching just in time for Valentine's Day too!

Liam's first event - St Enoch Centre's Winter Wonderland

Liam just turned 5 weeks old and was invited to his first VIP event in the St.Enoch Centre to see all the lovely Christmas gifts on offer in their shops.

There is so much on offer this year with plenty of sparkle and shine to go around. I was really pleased to see that the colour to be seen in this year is black with plenty of sequins, velvet and lace. I love to wear black so I'm really pleased by this, I fell in love with the Black Faux leather star studded biker jacket from Nine by Savannah Miller (£55 from Debenhams). I have a few pieces from Nine already and have always been so impressed with the quality of the clothing, the jeans are some of my favourites.

I also love The Collection from Debenhams silver and black dress, it would be perfect for looking glam in your cosy socks in your living room on Christmas day.

Topshop have revamped their makeup collection recently and have some brilliant metallic eyeshadows just in time for the festive season. The bright, jeweled shades would compliment a dark outfit and add the perfect pop of colour. Topshop makeup has also been given Leaping Bunny status as cruelty free!

Liam loved looking at all the Christmas lights and the baubles on the trees although I don't think he was as impressed with the turkey hat he's sitting next to. I'm hoping that he'll be more interested in visiting Santa's Grotto at the St. Enoch Centre. Located just outside Mothercare, a visit to the Grotto is £5 and every guest will receive a special gift from the man in red himself. I think its wonderful that the centre are also opening the Grotto for 'quiet' sessions designed for children with autism, sensory or learning disabilities or vulnerabilities between 10-11am on Sunday 2,9, and 16 December. Visit the St Enoch Centre website to book a place as visits to the Grotto will be very busy.

Liam's favourite thing from the event was this beautiful Teddy from Hamleys toy store although wasn't as impressed with the antlers. The World Famous toy shop are also hosting their own annual Meet Father Christmas Event where children can join Santa and his elves for a magical experience and special gift (£25 per child bookable in advance)

Liam loved his visit to St. Enoch Centre, he was so excited by everything he fell asleep on my knee. I enjoyed putting makeup on and clothes that aren't pjs for once, my cosy knitted jumper is from Femme Luxe and is great quality, they have some lovely pieces at the moment.

GlamGlow Waterburst Hydrated Glow Moisturizer

Pregnancy really took its toll on my skin. When I first found out I was pregnant I started to get major dryness all over. I've always had normal to combination skin which which tended to lean towards dehydrated rather than dry so it was a big change for me.

I started to develop dry patches on my chin, and also my forehead (where I never get dryness or spots) especially around my hairline. It was really getting me down as it made my skin feel very tight and sore and my makeup wasn't sitting properly on my skin.

My usual moisturiser wasn't cutting it so I decided to give GlamGlow Waterburst Hydrated Glow Moisturizer (£39.00) a try. GlamGlow are best known for their cult face masks (which surprisingly, I've never actually tried). I started using this in my first trimester skincare regime and haven't looked back.

This is the first GlamGlow product I've used and I can't get enough of it. It works so well with my skin and leaves it hydrated all day. I can't decide if it smells like Terry's Chocolate Orange or Skittles (or both) but I can't stop sniffing it. You can instantly feel the hydration when it's applied to the skin.

The moisturiser is so lightweight, the creamy, gel formula soaks into the skin almost instantly when applying, it claims to keep the skin hydrated for up to 72 hours. I usually reapply this morning and night after I wash my face so haven't really tested this however I can confirm my skin feels a lot more plump and hydrated after using.

I'm definately planning on trying some more products from GlamGlow in the future as I was so impressed with this.

I haven't managed to share anything here for a while and that's because this little one came along. Liam was born on 22.10.18 and is absolutely perfect, we love him so much already.

I had planned on writing lots of content at the start of my maternity leave but towards the end of my pregnancy my bump was so big that using my laptop wasn't going to work as I couldn't reach it, I also was having problems staying awake for long enough to write anything sensible.

I'll be sharing lots more content soon, including more about Liam and my pregnancy/birth story as I know a lot of people like to read about them and I think its good to share our stories as I don't think childbirth is something that is discussed enough.

Finding my Maternity Style

I haven't shared a great deal about my pregnancy as to be honest, I've felt a bit rubbish throughout. I've had a fairly uncomplicated pregnancy to be fair however, my changing shape and size has definitely knocked me a little.

Now I'm well into my third trimester I've been living in the same pair of New Look Maternity Jeans and black vests with a massive tubigrip 'bump band' everyday. My feet have swollen so much that I've had to retire my beloved Dr. Marten boots and stick to loose trainers.
If I'm honest I've been a bit lazy and just thrown on whatever fitted until now but there is a huge range of nice, fashionable, maternity clothing out there at the moment.
The Maternity clothing range from Boohoo has some lovely pieces. I like to wear skater style and tea dresses so when I saw the Maternity Star Wrap Tea Dress I knew it was just the thing to make me feel more like myself. I teamed this with a pair of black capri leggings and sadly my boring, trainers. In non pregnant life I'd wear a nice pair of ankle boots with it. It's such a versatile dress as it could easily be dressed up to wear for a night out or worn as a day dress. The cut means that although its very flattering on my ever growing bump, I'll still be able to wear it afterwards.

As the weather is getting a little cooler here in Scotland, but not cool enough for a jacket, I picked a Black Soft Knit Hooded Cardigan. It's not from the Maternity range but I went up one from my usual size. It's lovely and soft and goes with everything. I love a cosy oversized knit and can see myself getting a lot of wear out of this.

After kitting myself out with some new clothes, next up was to tackle my makeup. I've been so tired recently that putting makeup on has been an effort but when I got my hands on the new Moroccan Spice Eyeshadow palette from Fenty Beauty I knew I had to give it a go. I adore all of the shades in this palette, especially the oranges and azure blue. I've also been using a lot of IT Cosmetics recently, rather than a full foundation I've been using the IT Cosmetics CC Cream. I love that it feels light on my skin but still covers the multitude of bags under my eyes.

I've realised that just because I'm pregnant doesn't mean that I have to compromise my own sense of style and just taking a little extra time for me has helped me feel a little better. I'll definitely now be trying to take more time to make myself feel like myself until the baby comes along. (because I'm highly unlikely to have time afterwards).
