Tipping in Guatemala is not quite as commonplace as it is in the United States, but it is still worth considering as it can help you to get the best service and also helps to support those service staff who will be working for quite low wages. By having an idea about what is customary when it comes to tipping, it can help you to make informed decisions about how much and who to tip.

The National Currency In Guatemala

The national currency of Guatemala is known as the Quetzal (GTQ) which is named after the Resplendent Quetzal, a colorful bird that is the national bird of Guatemala. The reason for this is that in the Mayan culture, which once controlled this part of Central America, the tail feathers of the Quetzal were used as a trading currency. There are also 100 centavos to each Quetzal, and there are coins available up to 1 Quetzal, and then there are paper notes of various denominations available between 1 Quetzal and 200 Quetzal being the highest denomination available.

When it comes to paying for different items in Guatemala, credit cards are becoming a more widely accepted form of payment, although Visa and MasterCard are generally more widely accepted than other providers such as American Express. There is also a widespread acceptance of US Dollars in many restaurants and shops, although they will generally tend to take only clean dollar bills. The exchange rate between the US Dollar and the Guatemalan Quetzal can fluctuate, but generally will equate to around 7.5 GTQ to 1 USD.

How Easy Is It To Get Cash In Guatemala?

You will find that ATMs are commonplace in Guatemala, with towns and cities having ATMs in most busy areas that have shops and restaurants. However, it isn’t always best to use the ATMs in Guatemala if you can avoid it, as card crime and devices being installed on ATMs to skim card details are a particular problem and they are often cleverly disguised, so that can make card fraud a risk. Guatemalan ATMs also have some of the highest transaction fees that you will find in Central America, so even if your card provider doesn’t charge for cash withdrawals, you may still get stung by the charges from the ATM, which are the same issues you’ll find when you’re sorting out tipping rules in Belize also.

Who Will Normally Expect A Tip?

Because the practice of tipping is something that is not as prevalent in Guatemala as it is in other parts of the world, and even in other parts of Central America, this will generally come down to your thoughts on the service. It can also depend on the standard of the hotel or restaurant that you are using, as the higher standard the venue, the more likely that the staff will be used to having tips. In other types of establishments or when it comes to tour guides, then it is going to be discretionary in most places, and they won’t be getting offended if you don’t provide a tip in most cases.

One thing that can be different if you visit Guatemala is the shopping experience, as there are relatively few chain stores compared to other countries, so more shopping is done from market stalls and independent stores. This means that if you know somebody local, they may be able to haggle on your behalf if you are going shopping, and if they do save you money then getting them a gift might be appropriate. All of the locals will be used to haggling, and can give you a few tips even if they don’t accompany you into the market.

Should You Tip Hotel Staff in Guatemala?

As we have touched upon already, Guatemala doesn’t have a strong culture of tipping, although in the hotels it is something that is becoming more common, especially in higher end hotels. As a rule, because of the crime situation in Guatemala it is generally best not to try and cut too many corners when it comes to booking accommodation, and there are some districts that can be more prone to crime than others. However, tipping does help the people you encounter to support their families, and where possible these tips should be given in cash to ensure that they go to those people.

When it comes to which hotel staff to tip, these will usually be the housekeeping staff and the bellboys or porters that help with your bags. For those helping with your bags, a tip of between $1 and $2, or between 7.5GTQ and 15GTQ would be appropriate. When it comes to tips for the maids that carry out the housekeeping work, the tip is on a similar ratio of between $1 and $2 per night. Because dollars are commonly used in Guatemala, it is acceptable to tip in either dollars or local currency.

Tipping In Restaurants In Guatemala

While the tipping culture is slowly becoming more common in Guatemala, it is still something that can have an impact on the lives of those people who are serving your food. Many of these people will be working at close to minimum wage, so the tips that they can earn through their work can have a significant impact on their lives. Nonetheless, there are some restaurants that are starting to add a service charge on to the bill, and it is worth looking out for the word ‘propina’ on the bill, which is usually around 10% of the overall bill.

When it comes to providing a tip in a restaurant, if there hasn’t already been a service charge added, then a tip of up to 10% of the overall bill would be a good guide. If the service charge has already been added, but you felt the service was particularly good, then you might still want to add a few Quetzals as a tip. This amount is also a reasonable guide when it comes to the bill that you might get if you are going for a drink at a bar, although again it is worth keeping an eye out for the ‘propina’ on any bills you receive.

Gratuities For Tour Guides

The tours and activities that you enjoy during your visit to Guatemala can really make or break the trip, and whether you’re exploring the Mayan ruins or exploring the volcanic landscape, it really is a beautiful country to visit. Tour guides are one industry that will often receive tips through their work, and this is something that is quite common in Guatemala as well. Along with the tour guide, if you are taking a bus tour then a tip for the bus driver is also something that would normally be polite and gratefully accepted.

The amount of the tip that would normally be appropriate if you are taking a tour will depend on the length of the tour itself. For shorter tours of a couple of hours, then between $2 and $3 per person would be suitable, while if you are doing a full day trip or longer, then between $5 and $10 per person per day depending on the service would be a suitable tip for the trip. If you are on a guided bus tour, then a tip of around half that of the tip to the guide is usually a good rule to the amount of the tip.

Who Would You Not Normally Tip in Guatemala?

As with many other countries, there are industries and roles where people will not expect a tip, such as those people who are working in fast food restaurants or coffee shops. You may occasionally see a jar marked ‘propina’ on the counter, and you can leave a tip if you like but this is not usually expected. Taxi drivers do not generally expect a tip, but it can be convenient to round up any taxi fares to the nearest dollar or Quetzal.

One area of tipping which is more unusual comes when you are planning on taking photos. Many Guatemalans are very uncomfortable with people taking pictures of children, and can be cautious about being photographed themselves as well, which is different than you’ll find in similar places like Panama. There are some reports of people asking for tips in order to be included in photographs, although generally it is best to be cautious and respectful when it comes to taking photographs, and always ask permission before taking photos.

Belize is one of the poorer countries of Central America, and this does mean that the tipping culture in Belize can have an important impact on the lives and the quality of life for those people working in the industries that encounter visitors. Don’t be too worried however, as most people are very polite, and even if you don’t give a tip they will not be abusing your for it.

One of the more interesting attractions for visitors to Belize is the Great Blue Hole, which is a round sinkhole that lies off the coast of the country. This is a location unlike almost anywhere else in the world, where the clear azure waters become a round and dark circle which is fascinating to explore and is a very popular scuba diving site. However, there are plenty of other great activities to enjoy in the country, and knowing who and when to tip can really help you to make the most of your trip.

The National Currency Of Belize

Belize’s national currency is the dollar, and you will often see prices listed with BZD to represent the Belizean dollar. Because the economy of much of Central America is closely tied to that of the United States, Belize is one of the countries where the value of the local currency is actually tied to the US Dollar, to try and maintain a stable and balanced relationship between the countries. The Belizean Dollar is tied at a value of 2 BZD to 1 USD, so this naturally makes it important to be careful that you specify the currency when you are negotiating prices in dollars!

While most places will be listing their prices and deal with the Belizean Dollar, it is also worth noting that the US Dollar is widely accepted in Belize. This means that you don’t need to worry too much about arranging local currency before you travel, but having a card with fee free cash withdrawals should allow you to take out funds on your arrival. While credit cards are not quite as widely accepted in Belize as they are in other countries, credit cards will often be an option in hotels, restaurants and chain stores, although it is a wise precaution to carry cash especially if you are exploring outside the main tourist areas.

Where Will You Be Able To Get Cash During A Visit To Belize?

While ATMs are particularly common in Belize City and the major destinations in Belize, you will usually find that most towns will usually have at least one ATM that you can use. These ATMs will issue Belizean Dollars, and most will raise a service fee for withdrawing cash while you are there, so it can make sense to withdraw a little more than usual to minimize the number of charges you will get throughout the trip. If you are heading into the inland areas of Belize to explore the fantastic forests, then bear in mind you may not always be able to find ATMs in the villages away from the coastal areas. And because the currency is set, you don’t need to worry about exchange rates.

Who Would You Normally Tip In Belize?

The industries where tipping can be customary in Belize will generally be in line with those industries where you would be expected to provide a tip in the United States. The differences that you will find will usually be in the expected size of the tips in Belize, and the proportion of the tip will often vary to the levels of tipping that you can expect to pay when you are at home.

One of the most important things to mention when you are considering providing a tip is that the minimum wage in the country is very low, with the hourly rate being less than half what most people would pay for a drink in a bar in Belize. A factor to consider when you are thinking about providing tips in Belize is that the bills you will receive in the country will not already include a gratuity as a rule. Generally the proportion of the tip will usually be around 15% of the overall bill, although even if the service isn’t particularly great, around 10% of the bill would generally be considered a minimum in a restaurant.

In some restaurants you may have the option to pay by card, and in some cases you will have the option to add a gratuity when you are paying by card. While some of this may get passed on to the waiting staff, it is generally better to provide a tip in cash if you want it to be passed on to the staff in the restaurant, rather than being retained by the owners of the restaurant.

Hotel Tipping

While restaurants in Belize do not usually add on a service charge to your bill, one of the differences with the hotels in Belize is that you are likely to see a service charge of 10% when you check out. However, do not assume that this will actually have covered your tips as unfortunately this will not always find its way to the staff in the hotel itself. As a rule, if you want the tip to get to the people who have actually served you, it is best to use cash and to tip them directly.

When it comes to who to tip in the hotel, generally it will be the bellboys and the porters who have helped with your bags, along with the housekeeping service. Generally, if you are considering how much to tip, between 5-10% of the overall bill as a tip is a good guide as to how much you might want to tip. If your hotel offers spa services, then they are generally dealt with separately, with a tip of between 10-15% of the bill for the service provided usually considered to be a reasonable tip for the staff.

Should You Tip Your Tour Guides in Belize?

There is no better way to see the country than by taking a tour guided by a local expert, and this can really allow you to see as many of the sights as possible. The tour guides can play an important part of this experience, as their knowledge can help you get more context for your trip and the sights you are seeing, so if you do enjoy then a tip would be a good way to express this. The general rule for tipping tour guides is about 10-15% of the overall cost of the tour that you are taking.

Because Belize’s tourist industry is particularly geared towards scuba diving and people taking trips to explore the Great Blue Hole, it is also worth considering the tips to the people who help you to get there. There are a couple of ways in which the tip can be calculated. The tip can be estimated either based on the overall cost of the trip at between 10% and 20%, or alternatively between 5BZD and 10BZD per oxygen tank is also suggested. There are some incredible beaches around also, but you obviously won’t need a tour guide for those.

Roles That Wouldn’t Normally Expect A Tip

One of the things worth highlighting when you are considering a trip to Belize is that it is a relatively poor country, so the tips that you do give to the people that make your trip more pleasant will go a long way. However, it isn’t a mandatory part of your trip to tip the people that you meet, so ultimately it comes down to the service you receive and whether you feel it is worth rewarding. Not tipping may be interpreted as you not having enjoyed the service or not felt it was completed professionally, so bear this in mind if you are likely to be returning to that particular location.

While many of the service areas listed above would usually expect to see a tip, there are several industries where you wouldn’t normally be expected to provide a tip. This can include the arts and crafts vendors that you will encounter in the towns and the cities of Belize, and also any fast food restaurants and street food carts will not usually expect a tip. Taxi drivers will not always expect a tip, but if you do they will often go out of their way to help, so it can be something worth considering.

There is not a ton of tourist attractions in Atrani, but that’s what makes it all the more special. While here, you can explore the winding streets, eat at a fresh restaurant, admire the pastel coloured homes, and even spend some time on the charming, quaint beach.

Drive along the Scenic Coastline

The road that you must drive to get around the Amalfi Coast is quite the adventure in many ways. The whole route is built high into the mountains and lines the sea. The views from the drive are incredibly scenic, and like nothing else you will experience on a road trip. However, the road the very small and has a ton of curves and corners to navigate.

A drive along the Coast is a must while visiting the Amalfi Coast to see all the beauty there is. If you are renting your own car, be sure you are a confident driver because it is not the most comfortable drive. The nice thing about renting your own car is that you can make stops along the highway whenever you want, and trust me, you will be stopping to admire the views often. If you are not a confident driver and want to admire the views without stress, stick with a bus company to drive you around.

Hike the Path of Gods

The Path of Gods is the Coast’s most beautiful and visited hike that stretches between Agerola and Nocelle. The hike offers some of the most stunning panoramic views of the mountains, water, and surrounding cities that you could ask for. This hike is 4.8 miles long and takes around 3 hours to complete. It is not an easy hike, especially in the middle of summer, but the views are well worth the struggle.

The Path of Gods is said to be one of the most fascinating routes in the Mediterranean and should not be missed while visiting the Coast.

Eat Fresh Gelato

The Amalfi Coast gets quite hot in the summertime and stays pretty mild throughout the year, which makes eating copious amounts of locally made gelato a must. There is nothing better than enjoy the stunning surroundings of the Coast while indulging in fresh gelato.

Along the Coast in the various cities and towns, you will find a ton of different gelato shops just waiting to be discovered. Some of which have very interesting and unique flavors, so be sure to go to more than one gelato shop to taste all the flavors of the Coast.

Take a Day trip to Capri

Many people think that Capri is a part of the Amalfi Coast, but this is actually not true. Capri is located on its own island off the main peninsula of the Amalfi Coast and can be reached by a short boat or ferry ride from one of the main villages. Although it is technically not a part of the Coast it still holds the same beauty and charm as the others but has its own unique characteristic. Capri is most well-known for its huge mountains, luxurious environment, and beautiful architecture.

Capri is the Italian hot spot for the rich and famous from all around the world. On this small island, you will find mansions of various celebrities, designer stores, and luxurious hotels. While on the water, you will see a plethora of mega yachts full of the elite. A visit to Capri will show you a whole other world that is made for the rich and will have you envious for the life they are living.

However, Capri isn’t made exclusively for the rich, and there are still things to do and experience for the average person. There are more than enough things to do that are both affordable and exciting.

If you want to see a luxurious and grand place, taking a day trip to Capri is a must.

Drink Fresh Limoncello

The best place on earth to drink Limoncello is the Amalfi Coast, specifically Sorrento. Limoncello is produced fresh in Sorrento and distributed all around the Coast, which is why you may notice a ton lemon centered souvenir around. While visiting the Coast, enjoying a few shots or glasses of fresh Limoncello is a must.

Limoncello is a sweet lemon flavored liqueur that is a Southern Italian gem. You will be presented with many opportunities to try it, such as buying a bottle at a grocery store, getting a glass at dinner, or going to a dedicated limoncello store along with your adventures. In addition to trying it, this is also a really great souvenir to bring home for friends and family, or for yourself to remember the Coast and all its fresh beauty.

View the Whole Coast in Ravello

Ravello is located above the city of Amalfi, high in the cliffs of the Coast. It is one of the most peaceful and romantic cities along the coast and is a must-visit for all travellers. The city is characterized for its romantic Shakespeare Esque terraces that overlook the sea and cities along the Coast. Gorgeous gardens surround the terraces, and the views from the edge of the terraces are beyond stunning.

This is the perfect high point to overlook the vivid blue waters and soak in the magic of the Coast. Just a warning, the terraces are very high, so high in fact that looking down from the top might make you a little bit dizzy. If you are afraid of heights, I suggest you admire from a distance.

Explore the Picturesque Streets of Amalfi

Many people are unaware, but along the Amalfi Coast there is also a city named Amalfi. This city is quite beautiful in its architecture and views and well worth a visit. One of the main sights to see in Amalfi is the Duomo, which is a church designed with a unique mash-up of different architectural styles. The unique mix of Baroque, Gothic, Byzantine, Romanesque, and most prominently Arab-Norma styles results in a very interesting sight to see.

Beyond the church, the city of Amalfi has a ton of quaint light-colored houses that are wonderful to admire and photograph. Plus, there is a pier that reaches out into the middle of the water in Amalfi, and from the end of it, you get some stunning views of the city and surrounding mountains.

Dance the Night Away

One of the more interesting and unheard-of things to do in the Amalfi Coast is to go out at night and party. However, partying in the Amalfi Coast is quite different than other places when you have venues like Music on the Rocks. This venue is located in Positano and is inside a cave on the cliffs lining the sea. It is a night out venue that cannot be beaten and well worth the visit while traveling the Coast.

When to Visit the Amalfi Coast

The best time to visit the Amalfi Coast depends on your travel preferences. The pros of visiting the Coast in the summer months is that it is fully alive. Meaning all the tours are open, all restaurants are open, there is no shortage of things to do. However, during the summer, the temperatures are quite hot, to the point where being outside for extended hours can be dangerous, and there are a ton of tourists. I can down after hiking Cinque Terre, which was a nice break after that.

The pros about visiting beyond the summer months are that the Coast is much less busy, which makes enjoy the views and experiences much more enjoyable, plus many restaurants will still be open. However, in the off season, you may find lots of tours not running and some more mild temperature days.

The best months to visit Positano are September, October, April, May.

Where to stay on the Amalfi Coast 

The best place to stay in the Amalfi Coast is in Sorrento. As mentioned, this is a much more budget-friendly option that many of the other cities, but it still is a main spot so getting to other cities and places to very easy. Plenty of people also access the area from Naples as well.

Today, Grand Rapids is well known for its art scene, microbrews, and green spaces. In 2014, Grand Rapids was even named America’s Best Beer City by USA Today’s readers.

Grand Rapids is one of our favorite cities, full of great things to do and places to visit.

Best Times to Visit Grand Rapids

Located in Michigan, Grand Rapids definitely has its share of snowy, winter weather and humid, muggy summers. Between the months of December and February, snow or rain is common and average highs range between 39°F (4°C) and 30°F (-1°C). This is the low season and if you’re not afraid of colder weather you can definitely score great deals.

Grand River Blue Bridge

During the summer, Michigan can be pretty warm and muggy with occasional rains due to increased humidity. Average highs in the summer are in the 80’s (26°C) and it is typically the high season.

The weather during the spring and fall is milder though it can be chilly. Rain is also fairly common and humidity can be higher. Temperatures vary depending on the month, but typically range between 79°F (26°C) and 34°F (1°C).

For the best weather, late spring and early fall are the best times to visit for a shoulder season experience.

How to Get To Grand Rapids

Grand Rapids is easily accessible by plane or car. By plane, you can fly into Gerald R. Ford International Airport (GRR). There are direct flights from many areas of the United States including New York City, Las Vegas, Phoenix, Washington D.C., Miami, and Orlando.

By car, Interstate 96 takes you across the entire Lower Peninsula of Michigan from Detroit in the east or Muskegon to the west, bypassing Grand Rapids in the middle. Interstate 196 runs south to north from Benton Harbor, through South Haven and Holland, then to Grand Rapids. Spend a couple days in Grand Rapids if you’re already road tripping through Michigan!

Top Things to Do in Grand Rapids

While not as famous or as large as Detroit, there are still plenty of great things to do in Grand Rapids. You can explore it’s art scene, sample local microbrews, learn about its history, and adventure through its public spaces.

Explore Downtown Grand Rapids

Downtown is a super cute area with lots of historical buildings, public areas, and amazing restaurants. Many of the local museums are also located within the downtown area, including the Grand Rapids Public Museum, Grand Rapids Art Museum, and the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library.

Be sure to also check out Rosa Parks Circle, named for the civil rights activist and long time Michigan resident, Rosa Parks. During the warmer months, events such as concerts and dances are held there and in the winter, there is even an outdoor ice skating rink! The park also has a statue of Rosa Parks.

Grand Rapids Art Museum (GRAM)

Located next to Rosa Parks Circle is the Grand Rapids Art Museum. This museum is home to a wide variety of art ranging from Renaissance works to modern art with 19th and 20th century European and American art as well. The museum also has special exhibits from time to time bringing more variety to their collection.

Some of their best works include those by artists such as Pablo Picasso, Andy Warhol, and Alexander Calder. We loved that they also included artwork by local artists who were lesser known.

They typically also holds events to promote the local art scene. Every biennial, ArtPrize is put on by the museum in partnership with the city for a few weeks during the months of September and October. Throughout the art festival, the entire downtown area is decorated with art and the city even commissions public art, just for ArtPrize!

During the summer months, this Museum has an event called GRAM on the Green. Every Thursday night, the museum provides free live music, dancing, games, and more.

On Saturdays, the museum offers special activities and programs for families and their kids. The Grand Rapids Art Museum is a perfect place to visit, especially for visitors with families.

Grand Rapids Public Museum

Grand Rapids Public Museum is an amazing place to learn all there is to know about the Grand Rapids metropolitan area. The museum is a great way for visitors to learn more about the local history and culture and is one of the attractions that draws visitors from all over the region.

One of our favorite exhibits was the “Streets of Old Grand Rapids.” It takes you back in time to Grand Rapids in the 1890s with a recreation of the city streets during that time. There is an old-timey theater, train station, opera house, gun shop, and more. The Van Dort print shop also provides live demonstrations in operating a movable type printing press. You can even get a souvenir there!

Other pieces in the collection educate visitors on the furniture industry in Grand Rapids, and animals and birds of the Grand River and west Michigan. The museum even has an antique Spillman Carousel from 1928 that you can take a ride on.

Grand Rapids Children’s Museum

The Grand Rapids Children’s Museum offers one of the most fun things to do in Grand Rapids for it’s youngest visitors. One of the most popular areas is “Little Grand Rapids,” where they can try out being a grown-up in their own little city, complete with a bank; grocery store; auto mechanic; and a doctor’s office, where they can examine x-rays and explore health sciences.

Other play areas include a bubble room, classic games like Legos and Lincoln Logs, and a space where they can make as much noise as they want while experimenting with unique musical instruments.

Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum

The Ford Presidential Museum is located right next to the Grand Rapids Public Museum along the Grand River. Former president Gerald R. Ford’s childhood home was in Grand Rapids, Michigan and the museum is also his final resting place of him and his wife, Betty Ford.

The museum includes exhibits on Ford’s life and his career as the president of the United States as well as the 1976 bicentennial celebration during the time he was in office and Betsy Ford’s role as first lady. Sometimes there are also special exhibits showing bits of history during the time of Ford’s tenure as president.

If you get a chance to visit Ann Arbor, Michigan, the other branch of the museum, the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library is located there.

See the famous Blue Bridge

This iconic Blue Bridge is one of the longest truss bridges in Michigan and was once a railroad bridge that was converted into a pedestrian only walkway stretching over the Grand River. The Blue Bridge is located just outside of the Grand Rapids Public Museum and is a great way to walk along the waterfront or across the Grand River and over to downtown Grand Rapids.

The Blue Bridge is such a scenic spot that couples take their engagement and wedding photos here.

Blandford Nature Center

The Blandford Nature Center sits on a beautiful site that includes wooded areas, fields, streams, and ponds. The center focuses on promoting stewardship through education on the environment and natural systems.

They also have a  wildlife rescue that cares for injured animals, some of which have become permanent residents after injuries left them unable to survive in the wild. These animals are known as “wildlife ambassadors” and participate in presentations to educate the public.

On-site is also the Blandford Farm, which features community gardens and provides a chance for children to learn about farming and sustainable agriculture

Meyer May House

The Meyer May House was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and built in 1908 for a wealthy local businessman. The original structure was a modest-sized Prairie-style home. Over the years it was  gradually altered and additions were attached. The home was restored to its original form after two years of research and is one of the few architectural attractions of Grand Rapids.

Today, the building is open to the public at no charge, complete with original and reproduction furniture.

Sail Down the Grand River in the Grand Lady Riverboat

The Grand Lady Riverboat is located approximately 12 miles southwest of Grand Rapids, in the town of Jenison, MI. Here, you can board the Grand Lady Riverboat and explore the Grand River by boat.

Sightseeing tours are typically offered in the warmer months, between May and October, and last 2 hours. Boarding begins at the time on the ticket and the boat leaves the dock half an hour later. Sometimes there are also live music cruises and they can even be rented out for private events. It is a great way to explore more of the Grand Rapids area!

John Ball Zoo

The John Ball Zoo is one of the best things to do Grand Rapids for families. One of its best features is the wide range of up-close experiences and animal interactions available to visitors, including the chance to feed spider monkeys, penguins, pelicans, and other animals.

Additional behind-the-scenes adventures include the chance to observe a chimpanzee training session while learning about their daily needs. You can also handle various small animals, including reptiles, birds, and mammals. Other activities include the opportunity to try your hand at zookeeping, take a ride on a camel, or brush a goat at Red’s Hobby Farm.

Frederick Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park

The Frederick Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park is known amongst locals at the “Meijer Gardens” and is a great place to visit in Grand Rapids. The gardens are located approximately 6 miles outside of the city so it is a bit of a drive, but it is well worth it! The 158 acre botanical garden and sculpture park is full of beautiful plants and amazing sculptural works.

Meijer Gardens is home to the Richard and Helen DeVos Japanese Garden, 8 acres worth of lush Japanese plants, Buddha sculptures, wooden bridges, and pagodas. There is also the Michigan Farm Garden that includes heirloom vegetable gardens, orchards, and animal sculptures, similar to what you would expect of a Michigan garden of the 1930s.

During specific times of year the garden also hosts a variety of exhibits and events. The “Butterflies Are Blooming” exhibit is open every year in the spring between the months of March and April. It is the largest temporary butterfly exhibit in the nation showing thousands of butterflies from Central and South America and Asia.

Every year during the holidays, between November and January, the “Christmas and Holiday Traditions” exhibit arrives at the garden and you’ll be able to see beautiful decorations, music, and food from different nations and cultures. There are also carriage rides and live entertainment during this event.

Keep in mind that the gardens offers little to no cover throughout much of its acreage so be sure to bring a water bottle, sunscreen, and a hat to stay hydrated and shielded when visiting in warmer weather.

Downtown Market

Downtown Market is a food market and community space open year round. There are a large variety of vendors and cuisines from around the world, there is something for everyone, all within this one building.

Grab some sandwiches from Carvers Grand Rapids’ Finest Meats or Fish Lads for local seafood. There is also a storefront for Slows Bar-B-Q from Detroit as well as Pho 616 for Vietnamese noodles, Sushi Market for Japanese, and Tacos El Cunado for Mexican fare.

Love’s Ice Cream is a great choice for dessert with delicious flavors made from local fruits. And if coffee for dessert is your type of thing, be sure to check out Madcap Coffee, one of the best coffee spots in Grand Rapids. They make an amazingly strong cortado with beautiful latte art.

Aside from food, there are also a few stalls selling cooking products and plants. Downtown Market offers cooking classes, houses local events, and can even be rented out as a wedding venue.

Local Breweries & Bars

Within the past five years or so the local brew scene in Grand Rapids has grown exponentially. There are so great microbreweries in the area to explore and get your drink on!

One of the most popular is Founders Brewing Company. They are best known for their flagship offering, the Centennial IPA, however their All Day IPA and Nitro Oatmeal Stout is also great. If you get a chance to check out their brewery and restaurant, don’t forget to try out their beer cheese, it is amazingly delicious!

New Holland Brewing Company is another local delight. Technically, New Holland Brewing Company is located in nearby Holland, a city approximately 30 miles southwest of town, but they have a brewery called The Knickerbocker in the western side of the city. Dragon’s Milk is one of their best known beers and they have several limited releases of new beers throughout the year. For eats, be sure to try their pepperoni pinwheels, they’re basically pizza rolls but they’re so good.

Hopcat was once only local to Grand Rapids, however they’ve since expanded to many nearby cities including Detroit, Ann Arbor, Chicago (IL), Madison (WI), and even as far as St. Louis, MO and Louisville, KY.

Although the downtown Grand Rapids Hopcat location no longer brews their own beers, they are well known for their extensive number of local beers on tap and even larger beer menu. You can count on Hopcat to have something you’d like. While you’re at Hopcat, don’t forget to get their cosmik fries! They actually used to be named “crack fries” because they were so good they were like crack however they have changed the name in recent years due to the inappropriate connotations.

There are so many options to grab a good beer in the city of Grand Rapids, you’ll be having a great time eating and drinking!

Although this isn’t a super large city, there are a great number of things to do in Grand Rapids, as well as some great hotels and other accommodations. For us, it is one of the top rated travel locations in all of the Midwest.

Founded in 1859 by Missouri native Joel Estes, this is the place to visit when you want to relax, unwind and reconnect with nature. Surrounded on all sides by the breathtaking the Rocky Mountains, the town is a popular summer resort that boasts a wide range of outdoor activities such as wildlife viewing, fishing, horseback riding, white river rafting, and scenic drives.

This mountain village is comparable to European mountain resorts and is considered a type of basecamp for the Rocky Mountain National Park.

Number one of your list should be the Rocky Mountain National Park – which I am sure you will agree is North America’s most spectacular National Park. The park boasts over 359 miles of hiking trails and spectacular views from the summit and is one of the best day trips from Estes Park.

Rocky Mountain National Park

In addition to this, you can enjoy wilderness areas, scenic drives, wildlife watching, fishing, horseback riding. There is also an informative visitor center for those who want additional ideas when you get there.

Lily Mountain Trail

For most adventurers, hiking in Colorado is a must.Lily Mountain Trail is a family and/or pet friendly hike that is relatively short (around 3.8 miles, round trip) and of an easy to moderate level of difficulty. It offers panoramic views and great photographic possibilties of Rocky Mountain National Park, Twin Sisters Peak and Longs Peak.

The hike begins at the Lily Mountain Trailhead, about 6 miles south of Estes Park. Parking is limited, so arriving early is suggested.

Yellow Wood Guiding

They offer Offers guided wildlife tours, Estes Park nature tours, and photo safari workshops — all of which are amazing. I personally think that wildlife photography is something that is best done in a guided atmosphere, or you will end up wasting loads of time without coming up with any quality photos.

They are also authorized by the National Park Service and the Department of Interior to conduct guided tours in Rocky Mountain National Park.

Open Air Adventure Park

The Open Air Adventure Park is one of a kind experience. At this park, you will have the opportunity to participate in more than 32 outdoor challenges which range from very easy to very difficult.

These challenges include tightrope walking, rope bridges, swings, and moving platforms. It is fun for the whole family and at only $35 for 90 minutes, it is also one of the most affordable attractions in Estes Park.

Sombrero Ranch and Jackson Stables — Horseback Riding

Anyone who loves horses will want to visit Sombrero Ranch. You get to choose from a wide variety of horseback riding tours plus trail rides, breakfast rides, steak dinner rides, sleigh rides, and even wagon rides. There are fishing and hunting trips available as well. If you are an experienced rider you can rent horses on a daily or monthly basis.

Another great place to rent horses to ride is Jackson Stables, which can rent you a horse for trail rides in Rocky Mountain National Park, pony rides for any kids in your group, and horse-drawn hayrides that the entire family will enjoy.

Rocky Mountain Rush

Here is one for the adrenalin junkies. Rocky Mountain Rush offers pulse-pounding off-road tours along the Trail Ridge Road, which is a designated national scenic byway and the highest continuous paved highway in America. You will love the thrill of roaring through rivers, over hills and down backcountry trails in their custom-built off-road vehicles. Tours include meals and sightseeing stops.

Rapid Transit Rafting

White river rafting is one of the best things to do in Estes Park. Rapid Transit Rafting gives you the opportunity to sign up for a half or full-day rafting trip and is one of my favorite day trips from town. The team has more than 30 years of experience on the Colorado River, and you can be assured of an adventure of a lifetime.

The Park Theatre

Park Theatre is one of the many historical landmarks you can find in the town of Estes Park. This theatre was constructed in 1913 and is one of the oldest motion picture theatres in the United States.

Despite the building being over 100 years old, Park theatre features state of the art digital projection and Dolby surround sound. At the Park Theatre, you can enjoy the latest releases, documentaries, and independent films.

Apart from all this you can go on guided tours, visit museums, take cycling tours, tour breweries, and distilleries plus enjoy archery, camping, and yoga.

There is also the Estes Park Memorial Observatory and the Estes Park Aerial Tramway.

Lake Estes Marina

At Lake Estes Marina you can rent fishing boats, kayaks, canoes, paddle boats, bikes, pedal carts, and stand-up paddle boards as well as rods and reels to try your hand at fishing on Lake Estes. It is one of the best places for outdoor activities in town, at least during the warm months.

From the marina, you can take a walk along the Lake Estes Trail or stick around inside the marina and play a game or fish along the shore. The Lake Estes Pavilion also has regularly scheduled events like concerts and such as well.

As you can expect with a holiday destination like Estes Park, CO there are dozens of special events and festivals throughout the year.

The Handmade in Colorado Expo

Held at the end of August, this festival is a must for lovers of arts and crafts. Come spend the weekend browsing the wares of local Colorado artists selling their crafts in Bond Park.

Elk Festival

Probably the most well-known festival in Estes Park, this event celebrates the annual elk rut. Festival events include bugling contests, educational exhibits, elk seminars, Native American music, dance, and storytelling. At the end of the day, bus tours leave for the best elk viewing spots. All in all, it is a great way to experience the natural beauty of Estes Valley up close.

Longs Peak Scottish-Irish Highland Festival

According to travel guides to Estes Park, this town is the Celtic capital of America. Longs Peak Scottish-Irish Highland Festival is held in early September, this festival celebrates all things Celtic. Highlights include Irish and Highland dancers, bagpipes, jousting and a parade down Elkhorn Avenue. We had a blast when we attended the festival and kids are welcome to attend.

What to Pack When Staying in Estes Park

What should you include on your packing list when visiting Estes Colorado?

This depends on what you plan on doing. If you plan on going fishing, bring your fishing rod, if you are going camping bring tents. Other useful items can include trail mix, a compass, headlamp, first aid kit, whistle, water bottles, hiking boots, rain jacket sun protection, and download offline maps.

Also, note that during winter the chance of snow can be high. Snow accumulation and the wind chill can often be below 0 degrees Fahrenheit so warm clothing is a must.

A heritage themed souk located beside the Dubai Creek was built in the mid-1800s and was major hub of trade for traders and merchants during those times since it is in perhaps the best location in Dubai. Located on creek provides the easy transportation of goods from and to other countries and also it is located near Dubai fort and watchtowers which was protecting it.

Now, this souk has been restored to its original condition with authentic narrow walking alleys with shops around you, selling all Emirati and Arabic handicrafts, spices, textiles, and much interesting stuff. Visiting this area is most recommended to know how Dubai evolved and how it was well versed in the trading business since early days.

After visiting Dubai museum and fort, you can walk down the narrow alleys of this area to pick up the best handmade perfumes (without any chemicals, Best saffron, Arabic style of traditional jewelry and dress, Emirati dress for men & women, Islamic style of décor items, Arabic hand embroidered stuff, precious stone jewelry and purse.  Also you can admire the clay washed or mud painted architecture of the souk by seeing the traditional arches, galleries, shops arranged in an old-style.  This area is located in oldest part of Dubai in Al Bastakia or Al Fahidi town.

Some tips for Al Fahidi Souk –

• Al Fahidi souk is connected conveniently through metro, Abra boat rides, buses, and taxis. To reach this souk, through abra – a unique old – Arabic style of wooden boat would be a memorable experience.
• Lots of walking is involved, so better to wear comfortable footwear and visit this place during the cooler time of the day.
• Little bargaining can be done but the souk is extremely safe and no fear of pick-pocketing and all.

Al Fahidi Souk

Dubai Frame

The Dubai Frame is one of the newest of the many tourist attractions on offer in the city when you are exploring Dubai. Reaching a height of 150 metres, it adds yet another world record to Dubai, as it is the tallest frame ever built. Located in Zabeel Park, it’s carefully placed between the old and the new parts of the city.

The idea behind its location is that on one side, you see Old Dubai, while on the other, the modern skyline and Burj Khalifa dominates the view. In that way the structure “frames” the past, the present and the future. This is easy to see if you ride the elevator all 48 floors to the very top. Here a so-called “sky bridge” connects the two sides of the frame, with panoramic views on both sides and a transparent glass floor. Such a trip will set you back around 14 USD and can be purchased in advance on the official website at https://www.dubaiframe.ae/en

It’s recommended you do this so you can skip potential queues. The price point of Dubai Frame is relatively low compared with other attractions in Dubai. In an otherwise expensive city, it is a relatively cheap way to get access to skyline views and see some truly impressive architecture, which is why it is among the best places to visit in Dubai.

When you are there, you’ll also be able to visit a small museum that highlights the future of the city as envisioned by the government of Dubai. Without revealing too much, let’s just say they have some ambitious plans.

Dubai Frame

Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary

Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary in Dubai is a natural wetland featuring a variety of salt flats, intertidal mudflats, mangroves, and lagoons that migratory birds use for their nests. The sanctuary was designated a protected area in 1985. A network of new channels was later created and much of the area has been planted with mangroves, reed beds and shrubs. It is also home to numerous species of small mammals, insects, and fish.

The main reason that Ras Al Khor is among the best places to visit in Dubai is bird watching. With over 67 species of birds, including migratory birds, in the nature reserve visitors can spot snowy plovers, black-headed gulls, as well as curlews and redshanks. Highlights include hundreds of greater flamingos on their annual migration. Although more numerous in winter, they are present in Ras Al Khor all year round. Chances are, you’ll notice that some of the flamingos aren’t quite as bright as others. Their color primarily depends on their diet. Younger flamingos are usually paler, while flamingos with bright pink plumage have been eating a diet rich in beta-carotene.

If you want to get really close to birds without disturbing them, there are three hides scattered across the sanctuary. Each of them is hidden at the end of a shielded paths and equipped with powerful binoculars so that you can get the best possible view of the birds while you are exploring Dubai.

Situated about ten miles from Dubai’s Deira district, Ras Al Khor lies at the mouth of the famous Dubai Creek, the waterway around which the city was originally founded. The sight of countless flamingos lazing by the water stand in stark contrast to the images of city’s skyline with many tall skyscrapers and buildings.

Admission is completely free for everyone, which makes Ras al Khor a wonderful place to visit with your family. If you want to avoid the suffocating heat, visit as early as possible. However, the birds are fed twice a day: morning feeding time is at 9-9.30 am and afternoon feeding time is at about 3 pm. Visiting in winter gives you the chance of seeing lots of birds compared to summertime.

Hot Air Balloon Ride

A bucket list-worthy thing to add to your Dubai itinerary is going on a hot air balloon flight, especially during sunrise. Even if you are not usually one to get up before day and dawn, for something so cool you should make an exception.

For a sunrise hot air balloon ride, you will be picked up from your hotel around 4.30 am by jeep or minivan. It’s about half an hour to 45-minute drive to the desert where the adventure will start.

The hot air balloon crew will be in full swing by the time you arrive, rolling out the balloon and prepping the basket and counterweight. It’s very interesting to watch all the preparations, it’s especially impressive when they start filling the balloon with (a mixture of) cold and hot air and it slowly lifts from the ground.

During the prep, you will be given a safety instruction and once the balloon is fully blown up and everybody is in the basket, you will practice landing position once or twice.

And then… you slowly move upwards, higher and higher until you reach the altitude where the pilot wants to be. This differs for each flight as it depends on the direction of the wind and the thermal layers of the atmosphere. It is one of the best ways of exploring Dubai, from above!

It won’t be long until the sun will begin to rise in the east and you can admire this stunning sight in silence (broken by the blasts of hot air into the balloon). You will see camel farms, the Hatta Mountains and miles and miles of desert. And of course, Dubai, with the cloud-piercing Burj Khalifa, which also has NINE Dubai hotels inside as well!

Time will fly up in the sky and before you know it you will be descending, back to the real world. Just before landing your pilot will ask you to assume the landing position. You will have to crouch down in a seated position with your knees bent, holding the ropes inside the basket while facing in the direction of travel.

After a smooth landing, the pilot deserves a round of applause, it’s not easy to land something without a break! And that’s it, your once in a lifetime hot air balloon experience.

High Tea at the Burj

High tea at the Burj Khalifa is one of those experiences you have to do once in your life. I mean Dubai is a city of excess where they sell gold bars from a vending machine so why not have high tea atop the tallest building in the world, which in on everyone’s list of best things to do in Dubai for a number of reasons.

I decided to go to high tea at the Burj because I wanted to go to the top anyway since this is most certainly not a cheap hotel in Dubai experience. The cost of the high tea was $150 USD which is expensive but the cost to go to the top of the Burj is $50 USD.

The high tea comes in three courses – finger sandwiches, savouries, and then desserts. Plus they have a delicious menu of mocktails you can try and a full coffee menu along with the teas. I spent three hours atop the Burj sipping on Champagne (yes there is alcohol there), and eating tasty morsels.

The views from the top are amazing and I think the best view is actually from the toilets! I enjoyed spending a few hours there to just take in the views and enjoy a bit of pampering.

Waterfront Fish Market

Dubai is famous for its atmospheric, fragrant souks. One that blows the rest out of the water when it comes to fragrance-overload is the energetic Waterfront Fish Market. Fish trading has existed here since the earliest days of the Emirate, but in 2017 the fish trading industry received a modern new site.

Located near the historic centre of Dubai, the Waterfront Fish Market bustles across 100,000 square metres of a modernised warehouse. Technology has been implemented to allow fishermen to offload more efficiently, but it hasn’t spoilt any of the atmosphere. It’s a vibrant, fast paced environment where traders and shoppers are more than keen to haggle for the best prices.

Known for the best fish in the city, the top restaurateurs in Dubai come here to snare the tastiest fish. You’ll find them first thing in the morning, haggling with fish traders for the choices catches and that experience of sensory overload makes it one of the best places to visit in Dubai

The Waterfront Fish Market is located on Al Khaleej Road, near the Dubai hospital – a quick and easy taxi from the centre of the city. Once you’ve taken in the energy of the busy market, head to one of the restaurant stalls to sample some of the produce. Yahya Seafood is an excellent choice. Not only is the fish deliciously fresh, their spicy Arabic-style dishes are an ideal match for the vibrancy of the market.

Deep-Sea Fishing in the Arabian Gulf

If you want to have a once in a lifetime experience, then deep-sea fishing with one of the tour companies in the Arabian Gulf is the way to go!

The tour company is based in Dubai, and they are part of the prestigious Dubai Marina Yacht Club. Go Fishing Tours packages have five tour options ranging from regular fishing and BBQs on board a yacht to Big Game fishing expeditions. You can expect to pay from 850 AED (235 USD) for the basic fishing trip to 7,500 AED (2040 USD) for the fishing and BBQ, which can fix a maximum of 16 people.

My hubby and I decided to do a fishing tour in Dubai a couple of years ago and have always had that on our bucket list. We chose a big game fishing package and sailed with Captain Rhayan and Jhun. The day was action-packed, and we were able to catch King Fish, Groupers, and Barracudas.

A good reason to choose this company is that they are socially responsible. They use ethical methods to catch the fish, and if you decide not to keep the fish, they donate it to local food banks. We also liked that they provided everything we needed for the tours. From the baits to fishing gear and safety equipment, so you would not have to add any fishing equipment to your packing list. Dubai Parks & Resorts

Dubai Parks & Resorts is one of the city’s largest outdoor attractions, combining three theme parks, a water park, two hotels and a huge dining and entertainment zone.

The flagship theme park is Legoland Dubai. Combined with neighbouring Legoland Water Park this is the perfect theme park day out for your under 12-year-old crowd. Next up is Motiongate, a custom designed movie-based theme park with a big focus on Dreamworks animated characters, as well as a Smurf Village, Hunger Games, Ghostbusters and Columbia Pictures section.

Finishing off the theme park line up is Bollywood Parks – bringing a taste of Mumbai’s best entertainment to Dubai in a series of colourful and entertaining shows and rides and that area, in my opinion, is one of the best places to visit in Dubai.

Connecting the theme parks is the beautiful Riverland precinct. Centred around a man-made lake, there are several themed villages, from the 1950’s American-dinner style Boardwalk through to the French Village housing a huge variety of restaurants and cafes. The cooler months see the streets or Riverland packed with roving entertainers, street markets and outdoor movie nights – even a giant portable maze has joined the line up!

It does sit quite far out of the city of Dubai, almost on the border with Abu Dhabi emirate, so packaging up your theme park tickets with either a luxury Polynesian resort overnight stay at Lapita, or a funky but budget stopover at Rove at the Park is a great idea to get the most out of Dubai Parks & Resorts. Otherwise, a 2-park-pass will set you back about $80USD per adult.

DIY Walking Tour along Dubai Creek

Dubai is not just about modern high rise buildings, posh hotels and man made islands. There is also an historical and traditional side to the United Arab Emirates which is easy to explore on your own.

One of the best ways to see Dubai is to take a walk along the Creek. The best way to reach Dubai Creek is to take the Metro to Al Ras station on the Green Line. Exit the station and head down to the waterside. Follow the river bank until you come to the Deira Old Souk Abra Station.

This is where you will ride a traditional wooden boat called an Abra (1AED) across to Bur Dubai. But first cross the road and explore the Gold and Spice Souks. You will find plenty of colourful and aromatic spices, herbs and the scent of Frankincense and Myrrh.
The Gold Souk houses many jewellery shops. Here you can feast your eyes on a dazzling array of gold and diamond jewellery and maybe even invest in a piece or two.

Also on display in a shop window in the Gold Souk is the world’s largest ring, the Najmat Taiba or Star of Taiba, which is valued at more than US$3 million. Seeing that along makes it one of the best places to visit in Dubai — just to dream!

After you have indulged yourself enough, head back to the waterfront and take an Abra across the river. Bur Dubai is the old trading centre where many rich merchants used to live.

The Textile Souk is situated here. Silk, Pashmina Scarves, cotton garments are just some of the items on sale here, which for me is one of the best places to visit in Dubai for the history and photographic opportunities.

Other places of interest in Old Dubai are the Heritage Village, Dubai Museum and Sheikh Saeed Al Maktoum House, and the Basakia Quarter.

If you feel hungry there are many traditional restaurants to try local delicacies, such as camel burger, kebabs or even budget friendly indian food. Look for places frequented by locals for the best experience. Don’t forget to enjoy a glass or two of the traditional tea too.

Allow yourself 4 to 6 hours for your DIY Tour. Don’t rush. Immerse yourself in a part of the vanishing Middle East.

Dhow Cruise

A Dhow dinner cruise is a great way to relax after a day of sightseeing in Dubai. It’s a chance to enjoy the twinkling lights of Dubai by night from the perspective of a traditional Dhow boat. You can take Dhow dinner cruises in Dubai Creek or Dubai Marina but I would highly recommend choosing a Dubai Marina Dhow cruise because when the sun sets there’s definitely more views to take in of the modern Dubai. It is one of the Dubai attractions that I highly recommend.

The Dhow ship was originally designed to be used for trade and you can still see them in use near the spice souks. Nowadays the Dhow ships are popular vessels for evening cruises as they enable visitors to Dubai to step back in time to experience this time-honoured mode of transport.

The dinner onboard is served in a buffet style with authentic Arabian dishes for you to enjoy. This is perfect if you like to try a few different dishes without overloading your plate – you can always go back for seconds! Soft drinks, coffee and dates are also served with your meal.

The Dhow cruise will take you out into the Persian Gulf for views of JBR Beach and the new Ain Dubai, the world’s largest observation wheel (think London Eye but bigger), which qualifies for one of the best places to visit in Dubai in my opinion. The Dhow will also take you around the Marina so you can gaze up at the glittering lights of the huge skyscrapers surrounding you.

A Dhow dinner cruise will typically cost around 160 AED per adult (£34 / $44) for two hours, including dinner and entertainment. It can be a romantic setting for couples but equally I think that this is a great excursion to enjoy as a group. On our cruise, there were a couple of groups who had booked to celebrate a special occasion.

A Visit to Old Dubai

For all its luxury, extravagance and ambition, Dubai has, in fact, come from rather humble beginnings. To get a glimpse into the city’s rich history, culture and traditions, a visit to Old Dubai is a must as a wonderful Dubai attraction.

Start off from Al Fahidi metro station and wander down to Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood, which is one of the best places to visit in Dubai. Here, explore a maze of narrow lanes that connect well-preserved traditional buildings which today play host to museums, art galleries and cafes. Look out for the unique wind towers that are still used today to provide natural air-conditioning.

Continue on to Al Fahidi Fort which houses the Dubai Museum. Explore the city’s history through a comprehensive display of artefacts and wander through a model souk depicting what life was like before Dubai’s transformation.

Afterwards, make your way to Dubai Creek through the souks of Bur Dubai and catch the traditional abra boat across the water to Deira. Once there, explore the endless lanes and alleyways of the souks that beckon visitors with their treasures. Take in the smells and the colours of the Spice Souq, where tables are heaving with aromatic herbs, colourful spices and fragrant incense. Then head to the Gold Souq and Perfume Souq to pick out some accessories and fragrances to take home.

All that shopping is hungry work so stop to get a delicious shawarma and wash it down with an ice-cold juice from a street stall.

A visit to Dubai’s Old Town quarter is a great way to get closer to the city’s soul and to understand its fascinating journey.

Dubai isn’t the only Emirate, and if you get the chance you can visit the other 6 on day trips. I loved visiting the Abu Dhabi Emirate, particularly the city of Al Ain which has one of only two UNESCO sites in the UAE.

This particular UNESCO listing includes four separate places within the city. The first is the Oasis which is a mirage come to life. This miraculous piece of greenery in the middle of the desert has around 150,000 date palm trees which receives water from the subterranean irrigation system and is centuries old.

The second area is the Hili site where you can witness tombs that date back to 2,500 BC and artefacts housed in the Al Ain Museum. Jebel Hafeet, the third site, is the highest peak in the UAE with stunning views, and is surrounded by 500 ancient tombs.

For more history and culture, the fourth site is the Bidaa Bint Saud, an archaeological site that is notable for its Hafit Period tombs, Iron Age irrigation systems and rare building remains. You can also visit the historical home of the Al Nahyan family who rule Abu Dhabi and is called Qasr Al Muwaiji.

While you could get here by hiring a car or even taking an Uber, going on a tour is probably your best option as it is the most convenient and you will learn so much more. The tours can start at anything from around US$80 with Dubai hotel pick up and drop off.

Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding

Located in one of Dubai’s oldest communities–the Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood–the Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding presents a variety of programs aimed at opening the door to understanding between cultures and is one of the best places to visit in Dubai. Programs are designed for individuals who want to delve deeper into the Arab culture, as well as for corporations acclimating their employees to proper etiquette.

A tour of the Jumeirah Mosque, one of only two in Dubai that are open to non-Muslims, includes an authentic light breakfast with Arabic coffee and tea, making it one of the Dubai attractions you should really make time for.

Beside a fountain outside the mosque, the guide demonstrates and explain the “wudu” cleansing process engaged in before prayers. After, during a tour of the mosque, the guide instructs about the Emirati religion and culture and answers questions. Visitors are expected to dress modestly, but traditional dress can be also be borrowed at the mosque. This tour operates Saturday through Thursday at 10am and 2pm.

Another popular program permits participants to enjoy traditional Emirati cuisine while interacting and conversing with presenters inside traditional houses. Sharing in the experience with others, guests taste new foods while learning about Emirati culture and traditions. Many meal options are available, including breakfast, lunch, dinner, and afternoon tea.

Fees vary, but as an example the fee for the mosque tour is AED 25 per person. Advance booking is not generally required, but do check at the website for more details.

My own experience with this program is that visitors are always welcome, and that there is no such thing as a bad question.

IMG World of Adventures

Dubai has ample of theme parks which are preferred places for the visitors unless they are traveling to the UAE in the winter season.

One of the newest parks is the IMG World of Adventures which is the largest indoor theme park in the world and one of the best places to visit in Dubai. It has theme of cartoon network which features many famous cartoons themed rides which any adrenaline junkie would love. It also hosts a dedicated section of souvenirs and rides for Avengers fan and is perhaps the most loved section of the park. There are some outdoor rides also and an entire area dedicated to the Lost Valley which is dinosaur adventure zone.

IMG World of Adventures also hosts a haunted theme hotel which is loved by the visitors who enjoy spooky stuff. The sounds and animations in this hotel gives a real spooky vibe. The park also has a large boulevard area where they feature live entertainment shows to keep the visitors occupied who aren’t interested in the rides.

The entry ticket for the park is 250 AED which includes all the activities inside. As the park is located in the outskirts of Dubai, the best way to reach it is to drive or to hire a cab.

Dubai Souks

While it’s easy to be seduced by downtown Dubai’s towering buildings, by JBR’s trendy beach clubs, or by Dubai Marina and its luxury yachts – take the time to visit the more traditional part of Dubai with a visit to its souks.

Located on the northern bank of the Dubai Creek, these souks offer an insight into Dubai as it once was; before the 5* hotels and maze-like shopping malls. For centuries, the Dubai Creek was a waterway into the emirate with goods from Asia, Africa and elsewhere being shipped in for trading.

Today, the souks are far more touristy, but still a wonderful antidote to an otherwise very modern city. Start at the Gold Souk and meander through the narrow walkways where the precious metal glimmers from all sides. From here, make your way to the spice souk – with the heady aromas wafting through the streets, it won’t be hard to find. Here you can stock up not only on saffron, chilli, cardamon and more, but also on teas, dates and nuts.

Other areas of the Dubai souk well worth a visit are the perfume and textiles souks, as much for the atmospheres and the goods being sold.

While wandering the main souk streets, take the time to head off into the back roads; where you’ll truly get a glimpse of local life with a high chance of stumbling across locals brewing chai or enjoying a board game.

Getting to the Dubai souks is easy. Take the Green Line on the Dubai Metro to Al Ghubaiba station, then walk to Bur Dubai Abra Station and jump on an abra (traditional boat) for a sail across the creek. The abra costs just 1 AED (likely the least you’ll send on anything while in Dubai), and they set sail every few minutes.

Exploring the Beaches of Dubai

Dubai is not all about its high-rise majestic buildings or super expensive supercars, beyond these Dubai is one of the few places to enjoy a beach vacation within a thriving city. From adrenaline-pumping paragliding and water skiing to luxurious beach resorts, Dubai has a lot to offer for beach lovers.

Dubai has a good number of beaches and most of them are owned by hotel owners as private beaches. You have to buy a membership card or pay a fee(not cheap) to get onto these beaches. However, there are public beaches also which are free to access and some have a little charge.

Jumeirah Beach has one of the most beautiful coastlines in Dubai and it has no entry fee, which made it one of the crowded beaches also, but it is still one of the best places to visit in Dubai. Travelers can enjoy a charming sunbath here while viewing the majestic Burj Al Arab, which is perhaps the most iconic of the Dubai attractions. There are several options for water sports like jet ski, surfing, basketball court and many more in Jumeirah Beach.

Al Mamzar Beach Park, this oval-shaped beach is surrounded by 5 beach sections with acres of lush grass, coconut trees and palm trees that offer a unique beach experience in Dubai. Visitors enjoy here a relaxing time with an enchanting view of the beach. Al Mamzar Beach also offers various adventure activities like Parasailing, jet-skiing, Scuba diving etc. Entry fee: 5 AED

Kite Beach beach is one of the most popular destinations of Dubai’s coast. It is a paradise for water sports lovers and especially popular among kite surfers all around the world. You can play volleyball by the shore of the sea enjoying the vivid blue water and the serenity of the beach. Entry fee: Free

Desert Safari and Camel Rides

Dubai, one of the wealthiest countries in the world, has signs of its wealth everywhere. From the tallest skyscraper in the world to an entirely artificially-man island, there is pretty much nothing you can’t find here. That is except for nature, and not the man-made kind as well.

Located in the Arabian deserts, Dubai is surrounded by beautiful sand dunes and those are one of the most scenic and best places to visit in Dubai. One of my favorite activities in Dubai is to escape all the craziness and go for a desert safari. It is a fully organized tour so you would have to book it in advance or try to find one of the tour companies in Dubai. The tour companies usually offer a morning tour and an afternoon sunset tour. Sunset tours are much better for experiencing the magic of the red dune in the Arabian desert.

The tour usually starts off with dune bashing, which is a lot more terrifying than it sounds. Next, depending on the package you have selected, you might go on a camel ride, a falcon show, shisha, belly dancing, sandboarding, or a fire show. All of this will end with a traditional dinner and a performance at one of the authentic bedouin-styled camps in the desert. It is one of the best ways to learn about Arabic culture and the lifestyle they people once used to have.

Al Bastakiya

Al Bastakiya is completely free to visit the area but if you plan to eat in any of the cafes or purchase anything from the galleries you would have to pay accordingly. Al Bastakiya can be found on Al Fahidi Street in Old Dubai and is easily reachable with public transport. The closest metro station is Al Fahidi.

A lesser known fact is that you can actually find a piece of the old Dubai Wall on display which speaks to the history of the place. I’d recommend wandering around the place before settling into a cafe. I’d recommend anything with a rooftop for a stunning view of the sunset but if that’s not your scene then you’re definitely going to want to head to Arabian Tea House. You can get some great tea, fruits and Middle Eastern Dessert here and the interior is very photo friendly.

Fountain Shows at the Dubai Mall

One of the best things to experience when visiting Dubai are the fountain shows at the Dubai Mall. The Dubai Fountain Show is one of the most well-known fountain shows in the world and totally puts Las Vegas’ fountain show to shame.

The fountains are located right outside the famous Dubai Mall – you can’t miss them. They go off every 30 minutes starting at 6pm until 11pm and are synchronized and choreographed to a different local song every single time. You could stay, sitting and people watching for two hours and see four different shows!

It is even more beautiful when done at sunset so try to get to the early ones- but they are all amazing! Within the Dubai Mall (which is massive and one of the best places to visit in Dubai in and of itself), just follow the signs for the fountains and you will find the outside spot smack in the middle of bustling Dubai.

Of course viewing the fountain show is totally free, which makes it an even better and more relaxed attraction because you really can experience it at your own pace and when you want. It’s amazing how many people come to watch the show each time and the group it brings.

Skydiving over Dubai

The city of Dubai is a favorite among adrenaline junkies and no visit is complete without doing something that is guaranteed to get the heart racing. Skydiving is quite the adventure, but here, the experience is amplified. It has grown in popularity over the years, is quickly becoming one of the leading skydiving destinations in the world.

The views of the city skyline, the man-made islands along the coastline, and the desert is a spectacular sight from 13,000 feet up in the air, where the essence of the city is intensified.

The dive is done in under 45 minutes, free falling through the skies at over 120 miles per hour. No matter the level of experience, this activity is suitable for all. For beginners, qualified instructors guide the entire process while being securely attached. For the experienced, advanced options, the likes of solo skydiving and a flight school are on offer.

The constant sunshine means that this activity is possible year-round, although the best time is during winter from October to March. The price for a tandem skydive is AED1999 and is money well spent for a once in a lifetime experience.

Brunch at Saffron Restaurant in Atlantis Resort

If you are looking for the ultimate day party in Dubai, you should head to the Atlantis Resort on Palm Jumeirah. Atlantis Dubai AKA Atlantis, The Palm is massive. It includes two world-class resorts with celebrity restaurants, signature restaurants and casual fare.

We took the Palm Jumeirah Monorail from the main downtown area of Dubai to Atlantis Resort. On arrival to the resort, it took a while through the crowds, shops and displays to get to Saffron restaurant. Therefore, give yourself extra time.

In Dubai, the weekend days are Friday and Saturday. Brunch on Fridays is very popular. Saffron Restaurant is known for its day party brunch and award-winning Asian buffet. They have a fabulous all you can eat and drink brunch with a DJ. At times it felt more like a club than a restaurant.

There were multiple sections of Asian food, seafood, meats, mixed drinks and desserts. There are over 220 dishes and 20 live cooking stations. It is actually the largest buffet in Dubai. I have never seen another brunch like it.

Your reservation allows four hours to eat and drink. We only spent two hours there and we were stuffed. I highly recommend the brunch at Saffron for groups but make reservations well in advance. The cost is AED 535 per person which includes selected alcoholic beverages. Brunch on Fridays is from 12.30pm to 4.00pm.

Dubai Miracle Garden

We made a special trip from Oman to Dubai with kids to see the Dubai Miracle Garden, and while I am not a fan of flowers, admittedly, I was astounded by this flowery fairy tale made of over 45 million blooming flowers. In 2013, Dubai Miracle Garden was named the largest vertical garden in the world and its flower wall is on the Guinness World record books for its length. 

There are flowers in every color under the sun, and some are created in the shapes of Dubai monuments like the Burj Khalifa tower and even the Emirates Plane. With everything here shaped into arches, hearts, and enveloping houses, it is not hard to see why it is called a “miracle” garden and why it is one of the best places to visit in Dubai.

One can easily downplay the cultivating skills that went into creating this garden until it dawns on you that Dubai is actually set in a desert. The rows in which the flowers are arranged, alongside how the whole system flows, create a sea of colors that gratifies the eyes of even those who don’t like flowers like me. 

The Miracle Garden, just like many of Dubai’s attractions, was designed to be self-sustaining, and therefore it is a great addition to the environmental tourist. 

Dubai Miracle Garden is just a few of those attractions that will satisfy all your senses and is certainly one of the best places to visit in Dubai.

How to find it: Dubai Miracle Garden is not located close to the most touristy area of the city, but the best way to reach it is from Mall of Emirates. Here, a taxi will take you straight to the garden. 

Entrance Fee: 40 AED for adults and 30 AED for children between 3 and 12 years.

Hummer Dune Bashing

This is a bit of an upgrade on the typical desert safari experiences, the VIP option, and it’s a bit like wrapping many must-do experiences into one. But this goes more so for the car enthusiast as they not only get to experience an affordable ride in a hummer, but they also get to utilize the all-terrain military vehicle in at its best by tackling all sorts of hills and jumps in the sand dunes through the Persian Gulf.

This tour will start out with a rather special hotel pickup in the back of a Humvee which then navigates through the main streets of central Dubai towards the seemingly endless sands of the Arabian Desert that surround it. There may be a stop or two along the way, depending on the package, before the Humvee reaches the start of the Dune Bashing tour where it deflates its tires to go off-road, making it one of the best places to visit in Dubai.

This is where the fun begins. So there are different scenarios, occasionally there will be a convoy of cars ready to leave, and between them, they will weave and dodge one another in a bit of a rollercoaster ride, which is not for the faint-hearted. Otherwise it may just be a leisurely, but still a bit terrifying, drive up and around the sand dunes.

The tours normally take around 20-30 minutes before finishing at a Bedouin-style camp with barbecues, traditional food and entertainment, camel rides, and lots of other local experiences to make the most of a night out in the desert.

Ibn Battuta Mall

Situated on Sheikh Zayed Road, Ibn Battuta Mall is huge shopping complex named after a great explorer, Ibn Battuta. The mall is divided into six country-themed courts, Persian Court being the most popular one which is enveloped by a hand-painted dome.

There are over 270 shops, 50 restaurants and places to eat, a 21-screen cinema, a trampoline park and a bowling alley. The interior tiling and artwork are spectacular as well.

Dubai Aquarium

Another unmissable site in Dubai is the Dubai Aquarium, home to over 150 colorful species of fish and other sea life. The main tank holds 10 million litres of water, and amongst hundreds of sharks and rays is the largest collection of sand tiger sharks in the world.

It is located on the ground floor of Dubai Mall and it is possible to view the main massive tank (large enough for glass-bottomed boat tours on its surface) from the mall itself, though nothing quite matches the thrill of heading “into” the tank yourself by entering the 148-meter-long walk-through tunnel. For the adrenaline junkie, cage snorkeling and shark diving are both possible here as well, making it one of the best places to visit in Dubai.

La Mer

When you visit Dubai make sure to plan in a few hours for La Mer, a newish place that is sure to make everyone’s list of best places to visit in Dubai soon enough.

It represents a different side of Dubai and there is a reason why it has become of the newest hotspots in the city.

La Mer is the perfect place for those who enjoy some beach time in a laid-back atmosphere while still having the positive aspects of a small town with all the restaurants and shops.

Dubai has some beautiful and clean beaches and La Mer area is home to one of them. You can do some water sports, chill or just go for a swim. Fun and cute beach houses (even the toilets/showers are adorable) allow you to take showers and thus make this place perfect spending a full day.

While it is all quite new, the style is shabby and retro-chic with many stylish restaurants, shops. There are also a lot of fun (and not so political) murals to check out.

But of course, there is something else unique with this area: you have beautiful views of Burj Khalifa – the highest building in the world.

Tip: Bring your towels and of course, your bathing suits (no nudist beaches in Dubai). While the beaches are public and free (and so are showers etc) you have to pay an entry fee to visit the water park, Laguna Water Park.
