the Eucharist in
humility.

It was written by American Roman Catholic
musician, vocalist and music-director / worship-director, Jim Cowan (b 1952),
and first published by International Liturgy Publications in 1987.
Sheet music is still available from them - link
below.

The song became better-known when it was re-recorded ten years later by Nicaraguan-born, US-raised Roman Catholic musician (foot-guitar), composer and speaker, Tony Melendez (b. 1962)

It is set to an unnamed tune, also by Cowan. This has a 4/4 time signature. In
the key of C, the first few notes of the melody are G_ E G_ C A_ A G_ G_
with accompanying chords C G F G.

1 Holy words long preserved for our walk in this world,

2 Words of life, words of hope, give us strength, help us cope

Chorus:
Ancient words, ever true,
Changing me, and changing you.
We have come with open hearts
Oh let the ancient words impart.

3 Holy words of our faith handed down to this age.

Repeat verse 1, then chorus

Lyrics

  The lyrics are
  copyright
so cannot be reproduced here. But they are currently available
on the Six Maddens website. A rough outline is:

    1. Sing a song for peace and justice,
Speak for those who cannot
    speak!
Claim the world for peace and justice:
Let the strong
    support the weak.

Refrain
Light a candle in the darkness;
Hope
    and freedom must not die!
Hope and freedom must not die!

2.
You who live in happy places,
Who can laugh and speak and sing,
Listen
    for the other voices
Mute with fear and suffering.

3.
    Thousands cry in nameless prisons,
Plead with powers who hold the
    key:
Plead that human rights be honoured,
That the innocent go
    free.

The words were written by English choral master and poet, William Whiting
(1825-1878). It was was inspired by the dangers of the sea described in
  Psalm 107, and
based on a poem which Whiting wrote to encourage a pupil who was about to
  undertake a long sea-journey (ref).

The hymn was popularised by the English Royal Navy and the
United States Navy in the late 19th century. Variations of it were used by
branches of the armed services in both the United Kingdom and the United
States. It is now known to some people as "The Navy Hymn", and
alternative titles include Hymn of Her Majesty's Armed Forces, the Royal Navy
Hymn, the United States Navy Hymn, and For Those in Peril on the Sea.

It is also used in many civilian maritime settings by ship's chaplains and
sung during religious services held during on sea journeys.

With meter 8.8.8.8.8.8, tunes it has been set to include:

Bacchus Dykes and first published in Hymns Ancient and Modern in 1861 -
this was the origin tune for the hymn, and remains the most-common one.

REST (Stainer) by John Stainer (1873)

worship chorus
expressing adoration, personal sacrifice and love of the three persons of
the Trinity.

It was composed by American housewife Terrye Coelho Strom in 1971 when she
was a recent convert to Christianity.

The tune and words are simple enough to be sung unaccompanied, and it simple
enough for children or relatively unskilled musicians, but still robust
enough to be arranged for adult use. It can be sung as a round.

With meter 6.6.4, the tune it is set to is called MARANATHA.

It was first published in 1972 by Maranatha! Music, who continue to hold the
copyright. Because it is so simple, many different arrangements have
been made. The original lyrics were in the first person "Father I adore
...", but were quickly adapted for communal use as "... we adore you".
