Associate Professor of Religion Ann Duncan, Ph.D., participated in a five-day faculty seminar in June put on by the Council of Independent Colleges and Interfaith Youth Core (IFYC), called “Teaching Interfaith Understanding.” Chosen from a selective pool of nominees to participate in the seminar, Duncan seized the chance to immerse herself in the event.

“The seminar was an incredible opportunity to learn and share ideas, not only with leaders in the field, but with faculty from around the country who are working to integrate interfaith and interreligious pedagogy into their courses,” says Duncan. “Developing the skills necessary to communicate across religious difference must be a central part of a liberal arts curriculum at this moment in our history and I look forward to sharing what I have learned and developed with our students, staff, and faculty in the coming year.”

The seminar took place at DePaul University in Chicago. Eboo Patel, founder and president of IFYC and Goucher College’s 2016 Commencement speaker, led the seminar with Laurie Patton, president of Middlebury College.

Associate Professor of Physics Rodney Yoder has won a $145,000 grant from the National Science Foundation to support his work on pyroelectric crystals, a major achievement for Yoder and Goucher’s Physics Program. Yoder is performing research to see if the crystals, which produce electric fields when heated, can be used to create and accelerate a beam of electrons.

“This award makes it possible for me to begin the next stage of my research into new methods for creating miniature particle accelerators,” says Yoder. “Having the resources to carry out a full experimental test of a new concept is an exciting opportunity for me and my students.” The project is called “RUI: Electron Beam Production for Optical-Scale Accelerators using Pyroelectric Crystal Arrays.” Yoder and his students will begin research this summer.

Local Business Leaders Meet to Discuss How a Liberal Arts Education Prepares Students for Jobs of the Future

Early Tuesday morning, local business and community leaders gathered on Goucher’s campus for the first Goucher Business Circle. The event was hosted by Bill Pugh ’94, vice president of sales and marketing, Apex Tool Group, and member of the Goucher College Board of Trustees. After a brief welcome and introduction, attendees networked and heard from President José Bowen about how a liberal arts education is preparing students for the jobs of the future. According to Dr. Bowen, “by focusing on Goucher’s three R’s, relationships, resilience, and reflection, we are able to better prepare our students to be successful in the jobs of the future, including those jobs that haven’t even been invented yet.” Goucher is also introducing a new curriculum for the fall of 2017 that will help students work together in groups with others who are different from themselves—a skill employers say is critical for employees to master.

The message clearly resonated with the local leaders. Maryland Secretary of Commerce Mike Gill commended Goucher, saying, “I want to thank you, Dr. Bowen. As goes Baltimore, so goes the state of Maryland. Baltimore is coming back in a big way because of the many assets in Baltimore and I am putting Goucher College at the top of that list of assets, because of the innovative work you are doing.”

The morning ended with a call for suggestions on how Goucher can continue to work with local leaders to create partnerships that will benefit students and Maryland businesses. The next Goucher Business Circle event will take place in the fall. To learn more about Goucher College, please visit our website at www.goucher.edu.

TOWSON, Md. – Goucher College is pleased to introduce its new mascot, “Rowdy the Gopher.” The newest addition to Goucher College and the athletics program will make their debut at Got Into Goucher Day on Friday, March 31st, 2017.

The change occurs at a very exciting time for Goucher College and its athletics program. Since the start of the 2015-16 fiscal year, Goucher Athletics has undergone a rebranding campaign as well as engaged a consultant for a facilities master planning process.

Goucher College Director of Athletics, Geoff Miller, stated, “This process started last fall when we unveiled the new athletic Gopher logo, which has been well-received. The process continued as we invited alumnae/i, students, faculty and staff to help us choose the new Gopher mascot costume through a social media open forum.”

A social media poll, which received more than 4,100 votes, was used to select the name of the updated mascot. Rowdy received the most votes from the four gender-neutral names chosen by the athletic department staff and student-based groups to be included in the poll.

Miller went on to state, “We felt that selecting a gender-neutral name was the right direction for Goucher Athletics and reflects the values of Goucher College.”

Rowdy the Gopher will make their inaugural appearance at 8:45 a.m. for the admissions-based program, Got Into Goucher Day, and will be present for the various Landmark Conference athletic events at home on Saturday, April 1st beginning at 1PM. Goucher men’s lacrosse hosts Elizabethtown while both men’s and women’s tennis square off with Susquehanna.

Any requests for Rowdy the Gopher, or if you would like to join the Gopher Mascot Squad, please contact, gopher@goucher.edu.

The American Council on Education (ACE) recognized Goucher College for its commitment to excellence in teaching at ACE’s 99th annual meeting in March.

Goucher and 13 other institutions were honored for their leadership in an awards ceremony. The colleges and universities have all partnered with ACUE, a program in collaboration with ACE, to implement evidence-based teaching practices. To accomplish this, faculty take online development courses in effective instruction. The ceremony marked the first anniversary of the program.

“These institutions have shown outstanding leadership through their work to ensure students receive what they deserve: great instruction,” said Elmira Mangum, 11th president of Florida A&M and a member of ACUE’s Board of Advisors.
