Bill Graham threw a huge benefit concert at Kezar Stadium in San Francisco on March 23, 1975. It was called SNACK - Students Need Athletics, Culture, and Kicks. Bob Dylan and Neil Young were there, as were the Jefferson Starship, the Doobie Brothers, Santana, Tower of Power, and many more. The concert was broadcast live on the radio, and it raised a lot of money for the enrichment of San Francisco public school students.

The Grateful Dead had played their last live show five months earlier and were said to be retired. But they were working together in Bob Weir's studio, developing some very ambitious material that was released later that year on the album Blues for Allah. I was listening to the show on the radio at home and I was not at all prepared for this intense instrumental music.

This performance featured the seven members of the Grateful Dead plus two more keyboardists, Merl Saunders and Ned Lagin. Big sound!

After I produced this show and sent it out, I realized that the 3/23/75 set had been released, on a bonus discsent out to people who pre-ordered theBeyond Description boxed set.

Also: A couple of tracks from this year's Record Store Day special, a newly-discovered reel from April 1970 - a show billed as "Mickey Hart and the Heartbeats" and "Bobby Ace and the Cards from the Bottom of the Deck." It's a mostly-acoustic show, with a bit of Jerry Garcia electric here and there. John "Marmaduke" Dawson sings harmony on "Me and My Uncle." The last six songs in the show are Pigpen solo.

This program, taken from a live broadcast on KPFA, features Phil and Jill Lesh announcing the results of the Rex Raffle, a fund-raising campaign that took place over several Grateful Dead shows in the spring of '93. Proceeds went to the Rex Foundation. We actually did the prize drawings live on the air!

Since that time, the Leshes have started another philanthropic organization, the Unbroken Chain Foundation. The Rex Foundation continues its good works in the world as well.

As I said in the program, if you have not heard the original recording of "Laughing," on Crosby's 1971 solo album If I could Only Remember My Name..., "your life is incomplete!" I still feel that way. Stephen Barncard's recording of Phil's bass, David's guitar, Joni Mitchell's soaring vocal overdub, and the rest, are a must-hear.

The cover of "Unbroken Chain" is by thismoment, led by bassist Duane Day. "thismoment is kind of like Brigadoon," Duane told me in email in September 2013. "It flashes into existence every 100 years or so. It's Mike Sult (guitar/vocals) and me, with whomever we're playing with (occasionally as a duo). It started out as a songwriter partnership helping each other demo some originals. The recording of "Unbroken Chain" was my arrangement, done as my submission to Neticated, the rec.music.gdead covers compilation (shortly after the release of Deadicated). Besides Mike and me, it features Wally Schnalle (drums), Steve Steinberg (tenor sax), Sue Crosman (keys), and Carolee Robbins (backing vox). A one-shot line-up; everyone but Carolee was in Breezin', a top 40 band that Mike and I played weddings and office parties with."

Elvis Presley and Jerry Garcia shared a drummer for a couple of years in the mid-'70s: the amazing Ron Tutt. Elvis's cover of Chuck Berry's "Promised Land," featured in this program, was released in the summer of 2013

The Fall Risk is a band fronted by Furthur vocalist Jeff Pehrson. Their first studio album was recorded at TRI Studios.
