Thousands gathered in the convention center of the Venetian hotel in Las Vegas to hear industry leaders, lawmakers, and charismatic figures from around the world discuss their views on Bitcoin, and, to a lesser extent, other cryptocurrencies.

By far the biggest draw of the event was US Vice President JD Vance, who traveled to Nevada to attend a reported $1 million-per-head fundraiser ahead of his appearance at the Bitcoin (BTC) conference. Vance, who has largely taken second chair to President Donald Trump in terms of crypto policies, called on Bitcoiners to get more involved in politics, suggesting they could potentially influence the 2026 midterm elections in the United States.

The vice president was not the only speaker at the event to include “freedom” in his messaging. Strategy co-founder Michael Saylor mentioned the word no fewer than three times during his “21 Ways to Wealth” speech, and Silk Road founder Ross Ulbricht, who was released from prison roughly four months ago after receiving a pardon from Trump, focused on the subject when addressing supporters.

“So long as we can agree that we deserve freedom and that decentralization is how we secure it, then we can be united, we can have each other’s backs, just like you had mine,” said Ulbricht, referring to Bitcoiners, whom he credited for helping with his release.

Emphasis on Bitcoin and crypto policy

As with many US-based crypto events since Trump spoke at the Bitcoin 2024 conference during his presidential campaign, many speakers focused on regulation, policies, and laws as they could impact investors’ bottom lines.

Hester Peirce, one of the leading crypto advocates at the US Securities and Exchange Commission, spoke on the future of the agency under the leadership of Chair Paul Atkins. Lawmakers from the US Congress, including Senator Cynthia Lummis and Representatives Bryan Steil, Byron Donalds, and Tom Emmer, spoke on panels about the efforts to pass legislation for a digital asset market structure and payment stablecoins.

“As we get closer and closer to two key pieces of legislation, both market structure and stablecoins, I wanted to come out and make sure the people understand how transformative these pieces of legislation will be,” Steil told Cointelegraph on why he spoke at the event.

Bo Hines and David Sacks, presidential advisers on crypto, represented the current administration and discussed Trump’s views on Bitcoin at the event. Amid the government looking at ways to establish a national BTC stockpile, Sacks suggested there was a “budget-neutral” way for the US to acquire more of the cryptocurrency.

Representatives from other countries, including the mayor of Panama City, Reform UK party leader Nigel Farage, and the head of Pakistan’s crypto council each made announcements related to adoption. Pakistan’s government is moving toward establishing its own BTC reserve; Panama City Mayor Mayer Mizrachi proposed a Bitcoin-friendlier approach for ships passing through the country’s canal; and Farage said his party would begin accepting crypto donations in preparation for the next UK general election.

“No wonder so many people are going for Bitcoin and going for crypto — because they can’t close you down, and that is the ultimate freedom,” Farage said.

Since the start of the conference on May 27, the price of Bitcoin has fallen roughly 5% to $104,745 at the time of publication from more than $110,000.

Xend Finance, Risevest Launch Tokenization Platform in Africa

Xend Finance, a decentralized finance project backed by Binance and Google, is launching a platform in Africa to offer tokenized access to global real estate and stock markets.

Partners in the launch include Risevest, a digital wealth management platform that offers individual and institutional investors exposure to global markets. The company recently acquired a broker-dealer license in the United States.

According to a May 30 announcement, the new platform will allow users to invest in international real estate and stock markets by purchasing fractional shares via tokenization. The entry barrier is low, starting at $5 when investors use stablecoins such as USDt (USDT) and USDC (USDC).

“This partnership with Xend Finance allows us to offer fractional, dollar-based assets like real estate and US stocks in a seamless, blockchain-powered format,” Risevest CEO Eke Urum said in a statement. “It’s a game-changer for young Africans looking to build wealth securely, transparently, and without barriers.”

The platform’s launch comes as Web3 projects are increasingly looking at Africa as a key market for real-world tokenization (RWA).

Some of the ongoing RWA projects on the continent are LIDO NATION’s attempt to tokenize and verify goods, Empowa using the Cardano blockchain to tokenize financial instruments in Kenya, and the development of the Africa Tokenization Council.

Xend Finance, founded in 2019 and based in Nigeria, built its DeFi platform on the BNB Smart Chain.

Crypto in Africa: a growing market

According to Chainalysis’s 2024 Geography of Crypto Report, Nigeria, where both Xend Finance and Risevest are based, ranks No. 2 out of all countries in crypto adoption. Other Sub-Saharan countries — Ethiopia, Kenya, and South Africa — made the top 30.

The report shows that Africans are adopting crypto for a variety of reasons, including business payments, as a hedge against inflation, and for smaller transactions. The continent may benefit from crypto’s practical use cases.

Stablecoins, especially those pegged to a major fiat currency like the US dollar, might be one such use case. Stablecoins act as a hedge against inflation and allow businesses to transact with other businesses and even customers at a lower cost. MEXC detects 200% surge in fraud during Q1

The MEXC crypto exchange observed a 200% quarter-over-quarter surge in fraudulent trading activity between January and March 2025, it said in its quarterly report.

According to the exchange, 80,057 organized fraud attempts from over 3,000 fraud syndicates were identified in Q1. The fraudulent activity included market manipulation, wash trading, and automated trading bots exploiting users through “unfair” trading execution.

MEXC said that the rise in fraud was most pronounced in India, with the exchange flagging nearly 27,000 accounts for suspicious activity, followed by the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) region and Indonesia, which had 6,404 and 5,603 accounts flagged, respectively.

Tracy Jin, chief operating officer at MEXC, said the fraudulent activity was fueled by a steady stream of unsuspecting victims funneled through social engineering scams. Jin added:

“While 2021 was marked by DeFi exploits, 2025 is increasingly characterized by socially engineered market manipulation. We have observed a growing number of so-called ‘educational’ trading groups that appear to be coordinated efforts to mislead users.”

A lack of education about cryptocurrencies and trading was the root cause of the increase in fraud, with many new users in these countries entering markets before understanding common scams and financial engineering pitfalls targeting crypto users, MEXC said.

The recent findings from the exchange highlight the need for education and awareness of common scams targeting crypto users to avoid falling prey to malicious actors.

Social engineering attacks amplify in the first half of 2025

In April 2025, onchain detective ZackXBT revealed incident details about an elderly individual who lost $330 million in Bitcoin (BTC) in a social engineering scam.

According to a later update from ZackXBT, the Binance Security team and other blockchain security firms helped freeze $7 million of the $330 million.

Crypto exchange Coinbase disclosed a data breach and subsequent ransom attempt, potentially impacting up to 70,000 customers of the exchange, in May 2025.

The threat actors made off with customer identification data, including names, addresses, and telephone numbers, but no private keys or user funds were compromised during the data breach.

However, TechCrunch founder Michael Arrington warned that the data breach likely put investors in physical danger by revealing their contact information.

If the price rebounds off the support zone, the bulls will try to push the pair to $109,588.

Alternatively, if the price turns up from the 20-day EMA, it signals a positive sentiment. That increases the likelihood of a break above the $111,980 resistance. The pair could then surge toward $130,000.

Ether price prediction

Buyers pushed Ether (ETH) above the $2,738 resistance on May 29 but could not sustain the higher levels. Profit booking pulled the price to the uptrend line on May 30.

Industry watchers are now waiting for Cetus to initiate its recovery roadmap after the Sui governance vote for returning the frozen $162 million was passed on May 29.

Sui community passes vote to repay $162 million to Cetus exploit victims

Sui validators approved a governance proposal to return $162 million in frozen assets linked to a recent exploit of the decentralized exchange Cetus, marking a key step toward full user repayment.

Cetus was exploited for over $220 million worth of digital assets on May 22, but validators managed to freeze $162 million of the funds shortly after the incident.

In a governance vote concluded on May 29, Sui validators passed the recovery proposal with 90.9% voting in favor, 1.5% abstaining and 7.2% not participating, according to the network’s official governance page.

“With this result, the impacted funds will be moved to a multisig wallet and held in trust until they can be returned to users according to the plan led by Cetus,” Sui said in a May 29 X post.

The decision follows debate within the crypto community over the role of validators in freezing onchain funds.

No more ETH dumps? Ethereum Foundation turns to DeFi for cash

The Ethereum Foundation (EF) has borrowed $2 million in GHO, a decentralized stablecoin developed by Aave, in a move signaling deeper engagement with decentralized finance (DeFi) strategies.

In a May 29 X post, Aave founder Stani Kulechov said the foundation borrowed $2 million in GHO tokens. “The EF is not only supplying ETH to Aave, but also borrowing from Aave,” Kulechov wrote, describing the development as “the full DeFi circle.”

GHO is a decentralized, overcollateralized stablecoin native to the Aave Protocol. Unlike centralized stablecoins, GHO is governed by Aave’s decentralized autonomous organization (DAO), which oversees interest rates, collateral requirements and facilitator selection.

The move highlights the EF’s growing engagement with the DeFi ecosystem, moving toward more sophisticated treasury strategies.

Hyperliquid trader James Wynn goes “all-in” on $1.25 billion Bitcoin long

Well-known Hyperliquid trader James Wynn has increased his 40x leverage long Bitcoin bet to $1.25 billion after closing his PEPE position for a $25.2 million profit.

On May 24, Lookonchain reported that Wynn entered an 11,588 BTC position with an average entry price of $108,243 and a liquidation level of $105,180.

The move came hours after Wynn exited his Ether (ETH) and Sui (SUI) longs at a $5.3 million loss. At the time, he used the proceedings to double down on Bitcoin (BTC), increasing his position to 11,070 BTC.

Wynn began his Bitcoin long position with $830 million on May 21, trimming $400 million in profits the same day. By May 22, he ramped the position back up to $1.1 billion, holding high leverage as BTC crossed $110,000 and gained $39 million on paper. He later sold 540 BTC for $60 million, securing a $1.5 million profit.

Miglino, who hosted Cointelegraph at a DNA House event during the Consensus conference in Toronto, Canada, was particularly excited about the firm’s AI compute fund.

“The biggest thing that we’re working on in the whole ecosystem is our AI compute fund, where we’ve been entrenched into the TAO ecosystem,” said Miglino, referring to Bittensor, a decentralized, open-source machine learning network.

Decentralizing telecom benefits small businesses and telcos — Web3 exec

Decentralizing telecommunication networks financially benefits small businesses and telecom corporations alike, according to Frank Mong, the chief operating officer of Nova Labs, the founding team behind the Helium wireless decentralized physical infrastructure (DePIN) network.

In an interview with Cointelegraph at Consensus 2025 in Toronto, Mong said that small businesses including bars, restaurants, convenience stores and other local operators can generate revenue by hosting wireless hotspots and expanding network coverage.

Large telecommunication companies and service providers can also tap into the Helium Network’s telemetry to reduce operational costs and expand network coverage in dead zones.

“It costs about $300,000 for a telecom company to stand up one tower; you need one per block for 5G to work effectively,” Mong told Cointelegraph, adding:

“Instead of doing that and making phone plans more expensive, what if anyone with a useful WiFi network shares that WiFi and allows, not just anyone to use it securely, but allows large companies like AT&T to see the telemetry of that network.”

Decentralized physical infrastructure networks continue to be examples of how blockchain technologies can provide real-world value and make existing infrastructure more resilient to outages, disruptions, censorship and critical failure.

DeFi market overview

According to data from Cointelegraph Markets Pro and TradingView, most of the 100 largest cryptocurrencies by market capitalization ended the week in the red.

Popular memecoin Fartcoin (FARTCOIN) fell over 28% as the week’s biggest loser in the top 100, followed by the Pudgy Penguins (PENGU) token, down over 23% on the weekly chart.

AI’s OSINT tool allow mass analysis of YouTube profiles

An open-source intelligence (OSINT) service claims it can generate detailed profiles on YouTube users based solely on their comment activity.

The tool, part of the “YouTube Tools” suite by pseudonymous developer Lolarchiver, allows users to run a series of AI-powered checks on any YouTube commenter. The tool’s webpage was recently altered to display only the administrator’s email address, presumably in response to increased media attention.

According to a May 28 report by tech outlet 404 Media, the tool can produce reports within seconds that include inferred data such as a user’s geographic location and potential political or cultural leanings.

During the test, a user was reportedly identified as living in Italy based on Italian-language commentary and references to an Italian TV show.

AI is making OSINT lazy

While the insights generated by YouTube Tools are based on publicly available data, the tool has significantly lowered the barrier to entry for digital profiling. Anyone can look up what a YouTube commenter has written and make those deductions themselves.

Still, it would usually take painstaking research and reading through a lot of boring content. With AI, all it takes is a click.

In addition to YouTube Tools, Lolarchiver also provides OSINT tools for Twitch, Kick, League of Legends, nHentai, leaked databases search, X, email reverse lookup and phone reverse lookup. Legal experts warn that some of these tools may be in violation of platform terms of service or even local data protection laws, depending on where they are used.

Not playing by the rules

YouTube Tools is likely in violation of YouTube’s policies. This is because the website’s terms of service allow data scraping, but “only in accordance with its robots.txt” file, which lists the indexable pages — this service likely does not respect such limitations.

The service also allows you to search leaked databases, and the legality of doing so depends on your location. While looking up your data is generally legal, searching for third-party data without a lawful basis can be a breach of the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation or state privacy laws in the US.

If the data includes credentials, using them may cross the line from civil to criminal charges, depending on the jurisdiction. According to 404 Media, Lolarchiver’s administrator is located in Europe, and the EU has stringent requirements for processing personal data.

The importance of data security

The rise of tools like Lolarchiver highlights the long-term impact of historic and ongoing data breaches. Whether through newsletter sign-ups or Know Your Customer (KYC) processes on crypto platforms, personal information is frequently exposed in hacks and database leaks.

This is because databases often end up in leaks that then make their way to stolen data marketplaces or services, such as Lolarchiver. An old example that still echoes in the crypto space is a data leak by hardware wallet producer Ledger, exposing the personal information of over 270,000 customers.

The author of this article, who was affected by the leak, reports receiving scam emails daily as a result. A more recent example is Coinbase’s data breach from this month.

That hack exposed Coinbase users’ account balances, ID images, phone numbers, home addresses and partially hidden bank details to attackers. Such issues are part of why some in the cryptocurrency space raise concerns about KYC requirements.

KYC and $5 wrench attacks

For cryptocurrency holders, the exposure of KYC data can be especially dangerous. A growing number of physical attacks — sometimes referred to as “$5 wrench attacks” — target individuals believed to hold large amounts of crypto.

Recent reports indicate that as cryptocurrency grows in popularity and price, some criminals are taking to violent measures to steal funds from high-profile crypto holders. A repository of known physical attacks on Bitcoin holders reports 29 cases in 2025, not including unreported incidents or those that did not receive media attention.

As privacy concerns mount, tools like YouTube Tools reflect a broader trend: the growing ease with which digital footprints can be turned into invasive profiles, often without user awareness or consent.

Centralized AI threatens a democratic digital future

Major corporations control decentralized AI (DeAI) companies, leaving decentralized AI in the dust. To build a more decentralized world, the sector must actively execute upon a focused DeAI strategy, with shared standards between projects, without compromise.

In April, a UN report warned that AI’s $4.8-trillion market is dominated by a mere 100 companies, most of which are based in the US and China. Centralized AI incumbents have the money and the connections to control this massive new industry, which means significant implications for society.

These companies, all employing centralized AI technology, have run into their fair share of headaches. For example, Microsoft’s Copilot garnered attention for creating explicit, inappropriate images, such as children in compromising scenarios. This sparked a public and regulatory backlash.

Although Microsoft created stricter moderation, it had already demonstrated that centralized AI can harbor problems in part due to its closed-source code.

Citadel was wrapped up in an AI trading scandal in the financial sector, as algorithms allegedly manipulated stock prices via artificial volume creation. Google’s Project Maven, a Pentagon pilot program used in military tech, has raised ethical questions.

“We believe that Google should not be in the business of war,” reads a letter penned by Google employees and addressed to Sundar Pichai, the company’s CEO. The employees requested that Google leave Project Maven.

“We ask that Project Maven be cancelled, and that Google draft, publicize and enforce a clear policy stating that neither Google nor its contractors will ever build warfare technology,” the letter states.

So much for “Don’t be evil” — the company’s old slogan.

These situations give us clear examples of the potential failures of centralized AI, including ethical lapses, opaque decision-making and monopolistic control. DeAI’s open-source ethos, community governance, audit trails and computer facilities can give more than a few massive corporations an edge in the future of AI.

Centralized AI gains more power

Corporations and nation-states maintain an upper hand in AI development today — not DeAI projects. Nation-states and corporations can and do outspend DeAI.

Nation-states see that the stakes are high, as Russian President Vladimir Putin highlighted when he warned that the country that wins the AI race will “become the ruler of the world.” The People’s Republic of China aims to become the global leader in AI by 2030.

AI will likely develop an authoritarian bent and feature the pervasive lack of privacy proliferating across today’s World Wide Web, all defined by a corporate state that maintains only a veneer of sharing the fundamental values of the Enlightenment.

DeAI faces an uphill battle

The chances for DeAI to carve out a considerable market share are relatively small. The incumbents are so well-resourced that the battle is one of David and Goliath. Nation-states and corporations will maintain the lead on access to AI, making it all but guaranteed that most of the world will interface with AI first on centralized systems, giving them early adopter status.

But on a long enough timeline — decades or hundreds of years — DeAI can win market share via open-sourced models and transparent developer documentation.

To realize the vision of DeAI, the sector will have to maximize AI’s benefits with security. DeAI must execute on privacy and data control, resilience, scalability, reduced latency, access democratization and cost-efficiency. It must do this as a community and express its values to the world — regulators, consumers, investors and more.

DeAI brings numerous advantages over centralized AI systems, like improved privacy and data control, no single point of failure, edge computing and democratized access.

Despite these advantages, AI will undoubtedly be dominated by the prominent state-enterprise apparatus characteristic of the neoliberal world.

To create a more decentralized world, it’s time to proactively implement a clear DeAI strategy and establish common standards across projects, ensuring these are upheld without compromise.
