NASA Launches Robotic Explorer to Moon From Va.
The LADEE spacecraft, which is charged with studying the lunar atmosphere and dust, soared aboard an unmanned Minotaur rocket a little before midnight, dazzling spectators along the East Coast.

"Godspeed on your journey to the moon, LADEE," Launch Control said.

Flight controllers applauded and exchanged high-fives following the successful launch. "We are headed to the moon!" NASA said in a tweet.

It was a change of venue for NASA, which normally launches moon missions from Cape Canaveral, Fla. But it provided a rare light show along the East Coast for those blessed with clear skies.

NASA expected the launch from Virginia's Eastern Shore to be visible, weather permitting, as far south as South Carolina, as far north as Maine and as far west as Pittsburgh.

The space agency urged sky watchers to share their launch pictures through the website Flickr, and the photos quickly poured in from New York City, Boston, Washington, D.C., Baltimore, New Jersey, Rhode Island, eastern Pennsylvania and Virginia, among other places.

Six months ago, Wool & Prince founder Mac Bishop and his friends Katie Elks and Mike Major set out to make a better, longer-lasting button-down shirt. With the help of 15 testers, the three young entrepreneurs developed their proprietary CottonSoft(TM) wool fabric that was light, breathable, durable and best of all soft. So he embarked on a 100-day challenge and wore the same magic wool shirt for 100 days straight, without washing or ironing it.
So how did the shirt perform during this period of grueling tests? The shirt stood up to everything I threw at it whether it was a five mile (8km) run or 72 straight hours of wear during Hurricane Sandy Mr Bishop wrote on his website. Continuing our series on disability and the strides made in this field, we visit the office of one of India’s leading accessibility technology firms, and meet their visually impaired tester Priti Rohra, who decided to break away from the conventional jobs offered to persons with disability in India and try something new!

The suburban Mumbai office of Barrier Break Technologies could easily be mistaken for yet another urban start-up. Besides the ‘tech’ factor in their name, their space is filled with young faces who could well be designing gadgets, creating new apps – stuff new India seems to be high on these days. Fact is, Barrier Break is indeed doing the above, though only in the field of disability. And what’s more, as we realize on seeing a young man hobble from one desk to the other, over 70 per cent of the office is disabled. Priti Rohra, Head – Accessibility Testing & Development, is one of them.

Taking effortless strides in crisp formals, Rohra leads us to what looks like a meeting-cum-exhibition room. Several gadgets here, of whose functions she explains later, have been tested under her watchful mind. To Rohra, her over eight-year-long stint with Barrier Break, one of India’s few ‘accessibility testing’ and ‘assistive technology’ firms, has been a chosen career path, for she has Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP), a genetic form of blindness since she was three. It didn’t come easy though, she tells us of the stereotypical black hole of vocations that are offered to blind persons in India. “NAB (National Association of the Blind) offered me training to become a telephone operator; there was also that option of taking up handicraft making.”But then this was the turn of the century, and opportunities, unlike certain attitudes, were changing in India. Some networking led Priti to her current employer, which had set up shop in 1995 and has had a disabled-friendly outlook since. “I started as a tester. I’d go through websites, PDFs, play flash games, be a recipient of e-learning solutions,” she reminisces, and much has changed from the beginning of her stint to now, when the technologies are advanced, the advocacy stronger and the accessibility solutions for the crores of disabled persons slightly better, if not vastly. “Ten years ago, there were no announcements at railway stations the way there are today. It makes a huge difference,” she gives an example.

Truth be said, we are today interviewing Priti because she was supported by an able family who let her pursue a career of her choice and hone her skills. Or else, the nudges of the system to the blind toward ‘handicraft-making’ and other clichéd vocations continues. “I’ve been a very lucky child. While my parents never raised me with any deferential treatment (Priti has a sighted brother who she looks up as a mentor), they allowed me to be free,” she admits.

The result is that the lady is now more than self-sufficient in social settings, and a motivational force at work. Heading a team of two now, Rohra has gained considerable experience in this sector, and speaks with insight. “It’s an untapped market still in our part of the world, and can only flourish with required support from the government,” she talks of products in mobility, learning, visual impairment and other disabilities. She also knows that change must happen from bottom-up, and we guess that she’s hinting at more women like her coming up in the field in the future. Through careful programmes, not luck.The ‘untapped market’ is quite an intriguing phrase, for Barrier Break isn’t another not-for-profit initiative. It is rather a social enterprise, and obviously has to look at its bottom line for sustenance and growth. As we glimpse into the workings of the products in the room as introduced by Rohra, it really feels like a different world from the perspective of an ‘accessibility tester’. There are computer keyboards with huge keys, adapter switches quadriplegics can use to seek attention (versus the classic ‘thread being pulled by teeth to ring bell’ manner), there are magnifiers, scan-and-read devices, gadgets for children and much more. With the current e-commerce boom in the country and a viable climate for entrepreneurs, this might be great news for disabled people.

It’s an interesting career stage for Priti, who’s just taken a sabbatical and returned to the same company. “I want to participate globally. There are some business ideas in the IT sector (diagonally different from her family business) I want to carry out with my brother,” she thinks loudly.

Well, as long as path-breaking employers keep mushrooming and technologies continue their strides ahead, it’s only an upward curve for the Priti Rohras of India. May there be many more.

CHENNAI: "A man and woman, if left alone, will always go for sexual intercourse." This is what a Kancheepuram judge said while awarding life imprisonment to a murder accused last year. The judge's loose comments have drawn the ire of the Madras high court, which not only acquitted the accused but also decried the judge for arriving at "judicial conclusions purely based on surmises and conjunctures."

In the March 13, 2012 order sentencing Kattu Raja, a factory watchman, for murdering a co-worker, the district and sessions judge-II of Kancheepuram had said: "A man and woman, if left alone, will always go for sexual intercourse. In this case, the accused and the deceased might have been left alone. At that time, the accused would have advanced sexual overtures towards the deceased. She might have refused. Still there might have been sexual intercourse between them. Again, the accused would have invited her for sexual intercourse, which she would have refused. This would have resulted in an ill-feeling."

The order was quoted by the HC division bench of Justice K N Basha and Justice S Nagamuthu while acquitting Raja of all charges on April 30. Flaying the sessions judge for such loose comments, the bench said: "These observations of the trial court are based merely on conjectures. It is not understood as to how the court could come to a judicial conclusion that a man and woman, if left alone, will always go for sexual intercourse."

Police arrested Raja in connection with the murder of Mageshwari of Karanithangal village, near Chennai, in June 2008. While Raja was a watchman in the factory, Mageshwari was working on production line and they were "seen moving closely frequently" by others.

The Kancheepuram sessions court found him guilty of the offence on the basis of the circumstantial evidence such as his proximity to the victim, his disappearance from the work spot for a few days after the murder and his confession to police admitting to the crime.

The division bench, however, rejected the trial court's findings and said too much importance had been attached to the circumstantial evidence. "This is a case based on circumstantial evidence. It is a well established principle of law that in a case where the prosecution relies on circumstantial evidence, the circumstances projected should be proved beyond reasonable doubts."

Expressing shock at the trial court's reliance on confessions of Raja, the bench said, "The trial court has extracted the entire confession and in the concluding portion it says his confession had corroborated the evidence of other prosecution witnesses. This observation is really shocking. The court has relied entirely on the confession to come to the conclusion that the accused had illicit intimacy with the deceased. The court has relied on the confession by quoting it extensively, forgetting for a moment that Section 25 of the Evidence Act bars its admissibility."

Setting aside the life term and ordering Raja's release, the bench said: "Absolutely there is no evidence against Raja to prove any circumstances, even remotely pointing to the guilt of the accused. Mere suspicion based on surmises and conjunctures will not take the place of proof."

Shivkar Bapuji Talpade (1864-1916) was a Maharashtrian Pathare prabhu community member who purportedly flew an unmanned airplane,One of the conquests many attempted since Da-Vinci’s time or even earlier, is flight by man, powered or un-powered. There were people who attached wings to their backs, some even attaching feathers to their arms, but in the end injuries, hurt egos and even death were the results.
Historic documents such as the Vedas and some Indian epics do mention flight and structures termed Vimana’s but nobody seems to have taken them seriously (inspite of claims & rumors that NASA's ion engine is based on the vedic texts). The contents of the book Vimanika Sastra and all the innuendo put together by H Childress and Berlitz, were dismissed as hogwash by many learned scientists. Having read the “the anti-gravity handbook” and the Vaimanika Shastra translation myself, I should agree that both leave a number of new doubts and questions in the reader’s mind rather than answering them. It could be so since the original Sasthra text itself is considered incomplete.

1800-1900 was a period of inventions- People were innovating left and right, at a pace never attained since then. Eventually, two attempts got recorded into the annals of aviation history. One was Santos Dumont of Brazil and the other the Wright brothers of USA. The latter are accorded all the credit today for being pioneers of manned, controlled flight. Dumont’s supporters argued that his 14bis flew for 722 feet in 1906-1907 after his 1901 dirigibles; The Wright brothers did their first 852’ flight in 1903, but more in secret. Brazilians argued that Dumont flew without use of catapults and slopes to aid take off, the Wright brothers did just that. Clement Ader did a self powered flight in 1890; or so it appears, but just 8 inches above the ground. Then there was John Stringfellow’s plane in 1848. The Wright brothers did some more sparsely witnessed flight demonstrations 1903-1906. But was there somebody else before the Wright’s, perhaps? Somebody who did not get his due recognition?

Well, one other person 'purportedly' flew a self powered unmanned plane in 1895. That man was Shivkar Bapuji Talpade. His plane was called ‘MarutSakha’. Reports concluded that he obtained the designs from his Guru Subbaraya Shastri (who compiled Maharishi Bhardwaja’s Vaimanika Shastra – a collection of some parts of the original Vedic period text), that he had his wife supporting him in these design & production endeavors, that the plane flew only a short distance before crashing, that it had a mercury ion engine, that he stopped his efforts after the crash due to paucity of funds, imperial animosity & lack of sponsorship.

The problem with this story is that there is very little to corroborate it except for the two articles, one by Times of India and one by Deccan Herald. There is a third write up linked here.

The Times article states- In 1895 an Indian pioneer flew what is said to be the first Indian plane in the air. The centenary year of the first successful flight, by the Wright brothers, was celebrated from December 17, 2003. But our own pioneer from Mumbai, Shivkar Bapuji Talpade, made an aircraft and had flown it eight years earlier. One of Talpade's students, P Satwelkar, has chronicled that his craft called 'Marutsakha'(Friend of the Winds) flew unmanned for a few minutes and came down.

Thiruvananthapuram, May 15 (IANS) The Kerala government will promote the state's coconut water-based drink "Neera" as a non-alcoholic health drink, Excise Minister K. Babu said Wednesday.
An expert committee that studied the potential of "Neera" submitted a report to the minister, who said the government will certainly take a positive view of it.
Neera has a lot of body-building proteins and, despite being sweet, can be consumed even by diabetics. Neera turns into toddy after it is fermented four hours after being taken from the coconut tree and has an alcohol content of five to eight percent.
"Our only concern would be that the present toddy industry and the employees in the sector should have no problems, if Neera production is taken up," Babu told reporters here after receiving the report.
There are 29,536 toddy tappers in Kerala.
State Excise Commissioner Anil Xavier said rules have to be amended and the Abkari Act has to be revamped to promote Neera.
"With the ASEAN agreement all set to be in force from the April 1st next year, if our Neera has to compete with similar products of our neighbouring countries, then the sanction has to come," said Xavier.
Kerala has 180 million coconut trees and 93 of the 94 coconut-growing countries in the world make Neera-type drinks.
In Thailand, a 330 ml can of coconut water is sold at around Rs.160.
"On an average, one litre of Neera can be sold at Rs.100," said V.K. Raju, a member of the committee and associate director of research at the Kerala Agricultural University.
He said it has been found that from one coconut tree a farmer will be able to generate a monthly income of Rs.1,200.
"The recent state budget that was presented has earmarked funds for setting up of 10 plants that will process Neera," Raju added.
"The Coconut Development Board has suggested that at the grassroot-level coconut farmers should form cooperative societies and at the next level there should be a federation and at the district-level a new company should be set up to take up production," said Xavier.
The report would now be placed before the state cabinet.

WASHINGTON: A meteoroid has smashed into the Moon, causing the biggest explosion ever seen on the lunar surface which was visible from Earth with the naked-eye, NASA said.

"On March 17, 2013, an object about the size of a small boulder hit the lunar surface in Mare Imbrium," said Bill Cooke of NASA's Meteoroid Environment Office.

"It exploded in a flash nearly 10 times as bright as anything we've ever seen before," said Cooke.

Anyone looking at the Moon at the moment of impact could have seen the explosion - no telescope was required. For about one second, the impact site was glowing like a 4th magnitude star, researchers said.

Ron Suggs, an analyst at the Marshall Space Flight Center, was the first to notice the impact in a digital video recorded by one of the monitoring program's 14-inch telescopes, said NASA.

"It jumped right out at me, it was so bright," he said. The 40 kg meteoroid measuring 0.3 to 0.4 meters wide hit the Moon travelling 90123 kph. The resulting explosion packed as much punch as 5 tonnes of TNT. Cooke believes the lunar impact might have been part of a much larger event.

"On the night of March 17, NASA and University of Western Ontario all-sky cameras picked up an unusual number of deep-penetrating meteors right here on Earth," he said.

"These fireballs were travelling along nearly identical orbits between Earth and the asteroid belt," said Cooke.

This means Earth and the Moon were pelted by meteoroids at about the same time, researchers said.

"My working hypothesis is that the two events are related, and that this constitutes a short duration cluster of material encountered by the Earth-Moon system," said Cooke.

One of the goals of the lunar monitoring programme is to identify new streams of space debris that pose a potential threat to the Earth-Moon system. The March 17th event seems to be a good candidate.

Controllers of NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter have been notified of the strike. The crater could be as wide as 20 meters, which would make it an easy target for LRO the next time the spacecraft passes over the impact site.

BANGALORE: As the alarm goes off at 4am, N Shiva Kumar is up on his feet, stacking his bicycle with newspapers. He has to deliver them before the sun appears on the horizon. A habit since Class 6, Shiva's life is set to change now. Come June 16, this newspaper-boy-turned-vendor will walk down the corridors of the Indian Institute of Management-Calcutta as a PGP student. It sounds like a fairy tale, but the TOI vendor who cracked CAT 2012 has indeed grabbed a seat in the premier business school. Shiva, 23, an engineering student from Banaswadi, is the son of an illiterate mother and a father who was a truck driver. He started working as a newspaper delivery boy and for his debt-ridden family of four the Rs 150 he would bring home was a huge relief.

"Every morning people would come home asking my father to return the money he had borrowed. My father had a truck. But there were more liabilities than what he could earn with it. When I was in Class 3 or 4, I sold flowers that my mother strung into garlands by the roadside. It was only later that I found the job of newspaper boy," said the 8th semester computer science student of Bangalore Institute of Technology.

Shiva managed the part-time job along with school. "I was studying in an ICSE school. In Class 9, I was asked not to come to school till I paid the fees. The next day, I approached the first customer I was delivering the paper to, Krishna Veda Vyasa, and requested him to fund me. He hesitated, and said he didn't even know me. I asked him to do a background check, and he found I was the topper there. I requested him to pay one term's fee, but he paid for the entire year. He continued funding me ever since. I owe it all to him," he said.

He soon found an opportunity to be a vendor and started his own agency when in Class 10. "I'd learnt the tricks of the trade by then. My vendor had some 50 extra copies to sell and I took them from him. That's how I started," he said. The 50 copies have now grown to 500. "After school, I would take my cycle and identify new buildings and residents. I would approach them for business and ensured the papers reached before 6am. I had my own targets for a month," he explained his marketing tactics. He still delivers the paper along with four of his delivery boys.

"It was hard work. I had to get up at 4am every day, deliver the papers and head to school. I had to skip breakfast to be on time, but would still be late. In college, I opted to sit in the last bench during the first hour so I could catch up on some sleep."

IIM could not have rejected a seat for an aspirant like him. "After my family stabilizes, I want to start a charitable institution, Educate India, by which I can help the underprivileged gain some education. I could achieve this because someone helped me. In turn, I want to help at least 10 people," he said. Shiva is taking an education loan to fund his IIM course.

The Supreme Court has held that the two-finger test on a rape victim violates her right to privacy, and asked the government to provide better medical procedures to confirm sexual assault.

A bench of justices BS Chauhan and FMI Kalifulla said even if the report of the two-finger test is affirmative, it cannot give rise to presumption of consent on part of a rape victim.
"Undoubtedly, the two-finger test and its interpretation violates the right of rape survivors to privacy, physical and mental integrity and dignity. Thus, this test, even if the report is affirmative, cannot ipso facto, be given rise to presumption of consent," the bench said.
The two-finger test entails medical inspection of the female hymen.
Referring to various international covenants, the judges said rape survivors are entitled to legal recourse that does not violate their physical or mental integrity and dignity.
"Medical procedures should not be carried out in a manner that constitutes cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment and health should be of paramount consideration while dealing with gender-based violence.
"The state is under an obligation to make such services available to survivors of sexual violence. Proper measures should be taken to ensure their safety and there should be no arbitrary or unlawful interference with her privacy," the bench said.
Keeping in mind the International Covenant on Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights 1966 and the UN Declaration of Basic Principles of Justice for Victims of Crime and Abuse of Power 1985, the apex court said, rape survivors are entitled to legal recourse that does not re-traumatise them or violate their physical or mental integrity and dignity.
"They are also entitled to medical procedures conducted in a manner that respects their right to consent," it said.

When a photographer and her husband trekked into the desert for a routine shoot, they didn’t expect to stumble onto an odd scene that left them scratching their heads: thousands of mysterious, gelatinous, purple orbs scattered in a circle in the middle of nowhere.

“We did email a friend of ours who’s a zoologist, but she didn’t know…i mean, she didn’t seem to recognize what it was.”

The Voice of Russia turned to experts for clarification. Biologist Svetlana Kasatkina is confident that that substance is not of extraterrestrial origin:

“It is obvious that we are dealing with some sort of mutation. It is possible that those were a new type of jelly type fungi. In any case, it is hard to give any opinion without special tests. If I were a US biologist, I would be very interested in that discovery.”

REPLY:

There is NO such rules that one should not worship God for 5 weeks after the birth of a child. You may avoid touching the deities/ pictures of Krishna for about one week after delivery. However, you can chant Hare Krishna during these days.

You both parents should not see T.V programmes in front of him/ her and should not speak mundane talks in front of the child.

Keep your home like temple with the pictures of Krishna and he can always see them. Make him/ her offer worships to krishna daily in front of the alter/ picture.

If you follow these steps, he / she will become a devotee child with good qualities.
