Gang Starr Releases 'Daily Operation' (May 5, 1992)

2017-05-05T17:13:00.000+03:00

On May 5, 1992, Gang Starr released its third studio album, Daily Operation.

Daily Operation featured some of Premier’s most innovative production techniques. In an interview with VIBE, Premier said that the album gave him more confidence as a DJ. In 1998, The Source magazine selected Daily Operation as one of the 100 Best Hip Hop Albums.

"Before this album, I was getting a few calls from other artists to work with me. KRS-One reached out, but I was like, 'Nah, I’m not ready yet,'" he said. "I thought Kris was too large of an icon for me to even think that I could pull off an album with him. I was too nervous. But when he reached out after Daily Operation I said, 'Ok, I’ll do it.' I did so many songs with other artists after that album."

One of the songs of the album, "B.Y.S.", was featured in the video game Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas on the fictional radio station Playback FM.

Today in Hip Hop History: Breakin’

2017-05-04T18:26:00.000+03:00

The film Breakin’ was released May 4, 1984. According to the 2014 documentary Electric Boogaloo: The Wild, Untold Story of Cannon Films, Menahem Golan of Cannon Films was inspired to create this film after his daughter saw a breakdancer in Venice Beach, California, one day. At the same time, he pressured the production crew to complete the film before Orion Pictures released their breakdancing film Beat Street.

It was Ice-T's first film appearance, and the soundtrack of the movie included one of my favorite songs "Ain't Nobody" by Rufus and Chaka Khan.

Logic - Black SpiderMan ft. Damian Lemar Hudson

2017-04-16T16:30:00.002+03:00

"Spider-Man should be Black. James Bond should be gay if he wants. If we want to make a gay James Bond, fuck it. Why not? It’s 2017, why not? Who gives a shit?

Accept diversity. That’s what I always say. People will say things like, “I don’t see black. I don't’ see white.” But you should see color, ‘cause I think color is beautiful. And those are the things that make us different. But it’s the things that make us different that should not separate us.

My point of what I’m saying on this song, it’s the fight against stereotypes.

I’m used a nerdy white dude from New York City who plays Spider-Man cause that’s how Stan Lee created him but I’m just saying the Internet should not explode when it’s suggested that Donald Glover should play Spider-Man. That’s fucked up and it shouldn’t happen." Logic

Logic talks New Album, Evolution of Title from God to Africaryan to Everybody

2017-04-01T00:56:00.001+03:00

Hard Knock Tv's Nick Huff Barili sits down with Logic for his first in-depth interview about his new album EVERYBODY. This is part 1. This interview was filmed over the course of two days at Logic's home studio. If you notice the change of clothing its because we used footage from both days. We talked for over 7 hours and this is just the beginning of our interview. Make sure to subscribe to hardknocktv to be the first to be notified for part 2 of Logic's and Nick's conversation.

“Yeezy changed his album like 16,000 times so it is what it is. For me, I really stand behind what that title means,” he says. “The whole album leads up to that one song (“AfricAryaN”) which is just to talk about how I feel like I’m pulled in one or another direction. Black folk who don’t realize I’m mixed will treat me like I’m some racist person, or when white people find out I’m black, they treat me with racism and I don’t feel like I belong or fit in anywhere. So that’s what that term was about. It is a negative statement, I’m either one or the other. As I created the album, the album just became less about me and more about everybody else. It became about other people’s struggles. I was discussing race on this album because I was so scared to do it before and I realized that it’s the things that we’re most scared to do that is going to help others the most.”

He also says the album was originally called God. “And not in any type of sacrilegious way. It’s literally an album about God in a very beautiful way. It’s not hindering any religion, it’s almost a sci-fi take on religion and respecting everyone and all this other stuff.”

The track was produced by Dre. This is only song that both rappers collaborated on. It uses a sample from Quincy Jones' song, "Ironside".
