I monitor the forum, but I have been so busy running my prosperous company that I haven't had much time to get back up to Deep Creek. It does appear that Rick is still administering the forum. It's too bad for here at least, hot springs caretakers and regular visitors and locals could all discuss the springs. There is a reddit group for the springs - some trip reports happen there, but generally like much of reddit, it's a pretty weird group often posting a bit inappropriately. Lots of posts from guys saying they want to go to the springs but have never been, and waste of time things like that; some posts from accounts that are clearly too sexual in nature.

On Instagram, beyond the image archive ayearoferewhon that I ran for many years until 2020, there are infrequent but helpful postings from the current group of young regulars who have taken on Deep Creek Volunteers. Mostly posting about winter floods and clean up days and helpful things like that.

Otherwise Instagram has become an endless posting of the springs by folks far from the naturist and hippie traditions of the place.

There is no longer any need to go through the "original" Bowen Ranch. Just drive a another half mile to the "new" campground and parking area. Your car will be safe there, and access to the trail down to the springs is easy. Enjoy!

Directions Getting to Deep Creek Hot Springs:

From the I-15, Exit Ranchero or Main St. in Hesperia, head east about 8 miles to Rock Springs Road.
Drive east on Rock Springs Road about 4 miles, and go past the 4-way stop at Kiowa Road, where it turns into Roundup Way.
Follow Roundup Way 2 miles, turn left on Central Rd.
Drive North on Central for 1/2 mile, then turn right on Ocotillo Way.
Drive about 3 miles East on Ocotillo Way, then
Turn right onto Bowen Ranch Rd.(a dirt road) and follow south for 6.2 miles
After 2.5 miles, keep RIGHT at the Coxey Truck Trail split.

Drive over & past a cattle guard at mile 4

The entrance is 6.2 miles down Bowen Ranch Rd from Ocotillo Way. You will see a "Bowen Ranch" sign hanging on telephone poles at our entrance & a tall metal water tank on the hill.

If you see an old shack cabin, turn around! You are at the wrong place! We are another 1/2 mile further down Bowen Ranch Road.
Remember to keep right at the 3 way split just before our entrance.

A 4 wheel drive is NOT necessary to drive here unless it just snowed or rained for several days.

There were probably 50 people in total, a handful of topless women, and only two other nude people who left shortly after I got down. There were also four or five dirt bikes on the beach and three more parked up on the trail from Bowen Ranch. :/

Anyways, I did the hike down nude and didn't see any other nude hikers sadly. Laid out in the sun for a while then I moved to the water. The pools themselves were nice as always and the creek was felt a little warmer and lower. Still chilly but it was hot out so it refreshing. The hike up done nude as well and was uneventful. I showered and had fun with exploring the campground a bit more before getting dressed and heading out.

Trip report 5-3-2024 first snake! YIKES!

As I was heading to the springs I saw a 3 foot long rattle snake stretched out on the road. So, I backed up and took its picture. It was the first snake I have seen this year. I was about 1 1/2 mile before the Bowen ranch. So, beware !
I got to the springs a few minutes before 11 am. There was not a cloud in the sky and a cool breeze made for a comfy hike. When I got my thermometer out the air temp was 74 degrees. The creek water where most cross was 62 degrees. There was about 15 to 20 persons scattered around. Five were through hikers. Later in the day several more showed up. For those who do not know, the Pacific Crest trail goes through the valley. Through hikers hike through on the trail and most stop to rest, eat, relax and clean up. Good idea! As you can imagine after hiking 15 to 20 miles a day on average. They are tired, hungry and smell. I always enjoy meeting and talking with them. They are strong and muscular and beautiful people. Later I met a woman whom made me wish I had brought my back pack so I could got with her. She had Long beautiful gray hair and a nice spirit came from her. She made my day.
About 330 pm I got my thermometer out to take the pool temps.
The water about 15 feet up stream from the AZ. Pool was 55 degrees.
At the Arizona pool some one had put sand bags just below the source. The temp there was 110. The spring there come out at 108 so the sunshine was doing it's thing. On the upstream side of the pool we're several sand bags. I arranged them to block the water from there better. As I was doing this a guy came by with some more sand bags and shovel. We made about 10 more sand bags up and put them on the down stream side of the pool. Before we put the additional bags there the temp was 69 degrees. Afterwards, the temp was 75 degrees. Afterwards this pool was crowded with a large amount of soakers. As the day went forward a large amount of campers started to show up. Many were party animals drinking, smoking and getting loud. Basically enjoyingng life at my favorite hot spring.
At the Anniversary pool a friend had cleaned this pool very well. Except there was too much litter which I packed out. The temp there was 110. The sun did that.
The Womb pool was crowded also. But clean and a pleasant soak. The temp was 105. Hotter than usual.
The Serenity pool was nice at 108 degrees most of the water from the Crab Cooker pool was flowing into it. The Crab Cooker pool was 114 degrees cooler than usual. Dunno why. The Contemplation pool was 95 degrees warmer than expected.
For anyone who has not been to the new camp ground, I highly recommend it. Not just for the picnic tables and fire rings. But the friendly atmosphere and fun that can be had there. When I left there were 5 vehicles in the old parking lot called the Bowen ranch. And too many to count at the NEW camp ground. Just saying!
After all this it continued to get too crowded so I left earlier than I wanted to.
Happy hot springing in the springtime!

But with all the unpredictable weather we've been having, it might be a good idea to temper expectations a bit.

Maybe pack some comfy walking shoes just in case?
Trip report March 9 2024

I drove to the Freedom trailhead to see how the resent rain storms had affected the roads. They were terrible. The only time I had seen it this bad was in the 90`s after it had rained every day for more than 2 weeks. I scraped the bottom of my truck more than 2 times. There were also many mud puddles still in the road. I will NOT go back this route again until mother nature fixes the road.
I got to the springs at 1 pm. When I pulled out my thermometer the air temp was 60 degrees. The water was 49 degrees. I could see probably 30 - 40 people around. I swam as fast as I could to cross the creek. Others were crossing by walking down stream a bit. The water there was up to their chest. This took 3 times longer than swimming.
The first regular I saw was mayor David. I chatted with him about 20 minutes.
Afterwards I went around and checked the temperatures of the pools. The water of the creek was at the same level as the Serenity pool. Witch was muddy some what with leaves and debris on its bottom. Some one had removed the sand bags there that had directed the water from the Crab Cooker pool to this pool when the water was higher. I corrected this situation later in the day just before I left at sun down. Because it was not crowded then. The temp of the water was 105 degrees in the Serenity pool.
The temp of the Womb pool was 103 degrees, this was warmer than expected also.
The Anniversary pool temp was 105 degrees. Also warmer than expected. It was a bit muddy also. So, I went up to the source by the Pacific Crest trail to investigate why the water was muddy.? An African guy and an Arabian fellow had and were building a pool there. The water temp was 119 degrees. They asked me to not get in because the water was too hot they said with an Arab accent. They spoke to each other in an Arab language. I told them I was tough just like them. But did not sit down like they did as the pool was too small. Again later in the day, just before sunset, I went and tore this pool down so this heated water could go to the other pools.
The Arizona pool was about 4-6 inches under the height of the creek. There was no sand in the pool at all. And the plug from the drainage pipe was missing. Someone had put sandbags just below the source to make a small pool there only big enough for 2 people. Most were only soaking their feet and splashing the hot water on themselves. The temp upstream from the AZ pool was 47 degrees.
As I looked around the beach area I spotted 7 tents and 2 other areas where people had just piled up camping equipment. Kind of strange as there is no moon light now. The good
news is there was no trash to be found anywhere.
While soaking in the Womb pool I got into a conversation with 4 guys from Colorado. I got into telling them about my time when I worked at the nuclear test site in Nevada which was an incredible and multifaceted experience. As my stories became complicated they explained they had done some LSD just before I had got there. And they were extremely fascinated by my stories, tell us more. This seemed like it took 1 hour BUT, it took more than 2 hours. Whereupon they announced that I appeared like a wizard.? That was when they all retired to their camp site amazed beyond belief. VERY INTERESTING!!!!!!
As I crossed the creek to go home an unmarked helicopter came flying low and slow over the canyon. I started to get out my camera but, it appeared the copter was about to hit the cliff just above me. So, I ran as quickly as I could. Luckily it did not. So I took pics of it as it was leaving. Then some people from China came to me asking what to do? I explained to them how to cross. It was an elderly couple and their 30ish son. Only the son spoke English. As they were crossing the father got caught in the current and started drowning. Again, I ran as fast as I could to attempt to rescue him. His son got there first, luckily. So, there is a lesson there for us all, be aware at all times.
And now I would like to vent about the driving situation I experienced this trip.
As I was driving on Bowen ranch road a group of motorcycles came from the opposite direction. The first group of 3 were coming toward me around a curve in the road. One of them was looking at the guy beside him and did not see me about to hit him. I blew my horn to get his attention and made a hard left turn into the embankment. He leaned to the left missing me by inches. I felt like cussing at him but did not. About 8 more cycles came around the curve all slamming on their brakes. I had to pull off the embankment to get the dirt off my bumpers and tires. They all continued on, teenagers all. I hope they learned a lesson !
Then as I left on central Avenue as I got near where the railroad crossing is a monster truck with extra bright lights was coming the opposite direction. I flashed my bright lights on an off hoping he would turn off his lights. But noooo. I could not even see my windshield. So I had to stop in the road so I would not crash.
Beam me up Scotty as there is no intelligent life here !!!

It is totally inappropriate to carve initials into a tree. No one should do that. For years there have been volunteers who have packed out trash and generally cleaned up the area adjacent to the springs. This continues to occur. However, because of the Internet and the fact that the springs are becoming more well known, there are a certain element of visitor who simply don't respect the place. But thankfully they are in the minority. Deep Creek Hot Springs will stay open as long as people respect the place. This includes taking out your own trash, shitting away from the creek and burying it as deep as you can, keeping dogs on leashes, not bringing firearms, not blasting boom boxes, and of course not drawing or painting graffiti on rocks.

Bowen ranch history

My son came from Utah this holiday and he went into springs. I have been avoiding them because of bad reports and these new people living in the area. My son came out and told me, “mom don’t go” that is quite disappointing considering his initials are to this day carved into the trees on the creek. He did tell of some of horrors being committed against the area and it is apparent that the curse of the round mountain ranch still goes on. I have always wondered with an aw how people could get so serious over a $1- almost like they had visions of grandeur! And how they could eat their fellow man over it. What a joke! You ain’t going to get rich off the gate take keepers!
These people are a class of people I call “ignets”. They are the ones that get full of this imaginary power and at the expense of water sources and the environment, exert that false authority. Instead of being stewards of the lands and give thanks for their allowance to be their, the argue and scrap I’ve shit that has no true value- all the while these other ignets are painting on rocks, trashing the area and shitting in the creek!
They don’t get it! They are completely missing it!
Joke them if they can’t take a FUCK!🤯🤪😝😉😁😵‍💫😵🤔

Trip report 8-27-2023

I just got home from a 3 day camping trip at the D.C.H.S. Campground. Persons at the campground were heading to the burning man art festival.
Yesterday I got to the springs at 1:30 pm. It must have been Mexican appreciation day. There were at least 30 Mexican men there. Only 2 Mexican women and the boom box had the same songs I have heard for decades playing. So I did the only thing I knew to do. I took a 2 hour nap. There was only 2 other people with European ancestry and one was speaking Spanish with them. This IS the greatest country ever.
So at 4:20 I got my new thermometer out. It said the air temp was 89 degrees. All temps of the pools were taken at their center near the surface.
The Arizona pool is leaking again, it was just a little more than half full. The temp there was 113 degrees. I suppose it was leaking because of storm damage. The creek is around 6 inches higherr than the week before.
The Anniversaty pool was 109 degrees. I took the blue hose out and cleaned the dead algae and trash out of the pool. It over heated me but that just makes me stronger.
The womb pool was 106 degrees. Hotter than I expected. I got the hose out and with a little help from friends we cleaned the dead algae out of this pool also. Thank you seniors and seniorettas. The Serenity pool was having the water deverted from the Crab Cooker pool directly into it. The temp was 107 degrees. The Contemplation pool was full of burrito eaters, thank you for the good food, really needed it. The temp there was 96 degrees. Even hotter was the sauce.
The creek water at the spot @20 feet upstream from the Arizona pool was 76 degrees. The creek water where most cross the creek was 78 degrees.
I only found a large piece of aluminum foil 2 water bottles and an ugly t shirt for my trash collection. Thanks everyone for help with that.
As the sun set a large group of women, all sizes and shapes showed up as I left. Most with sleeping bags and tents. Another terrific time to be at my favorite hot spring.

The most dangerous conditions are expected over
the mountains. Potential impacts include:
- Major rainfall flooding may prompt many evacuations and rescues.
- Small streams, creeks, canals, arroyos, and ditches may become
dangerous rivers. Destructive runoff may rage down mountain
valleys while increasing susceptibility to rockslides, mudslides,
and debris flows.
Proposed changes to recreation fees identified by the San Bernardino National Forest

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif., July 21, 2023 – The San Bernardino National Forest is proposing changes to recreation fees at nine developed recreation sites on the three ranger districts of the forest.

Currently, approximately 40 percent of day-use sites, overnight camping sites and other developed recreation sites are managed without user fees.

“We recognize how important these sites are to our local communities and those who use the sites,” said Jonar Rodrigo, Southern Zone Adventure Pass and Recreation Fee Program Manager with the San Bernardino National Forest. “These fee increases will help us maintain the sites to the level and quality people have come to expect, as well as make the fees more consistent throughout the state.”

The proposed fees by site and ranger district follow: at the Front Country District, the Applewhite Campground fee would increase from $10 to $25 for a single site. At the Mountain Top District, the Big Pine Flat OHV Staging Area fee would go from free to $5 per vehicle. At the San Jacinto District, the Pinyon Flats Campground fee would increase from $8 to $20 per night and $5 to $10 per additional vehicle; at the Marion Mountain, Fern Basin and Boulder Basin campgrounds the fees would be increased from $10 to $20 per night and $5 to $10 per additional vehicle; the Dark Canyon Campground fee would go from $12 to $20 a night and $5 to $10 per additional vehicle; the Ribbonwood Equestrian Campground fee would change from $15 to $30 per night, and; the Black Mountain Group Campground fees would increase from $50 to $100 (1-24 people), $75 to $150 (25-49 people), $110 to $200 (50-74 people) and $140 to $225 (75-100 people).

At the newly built OHV staging area at Big Pine Flat, the Annual Adventure Pass and the full suite of Interagency Passes would be honored.

The public is invited to comment on the proposed fee changes to the developed recreation program. The comment period is set to end by close of business on Oct. 1. Bring or mail your written comments to San Bernardino National Forest, Attention: Jonar Rodrigo, 602 S. Tippecanoe Ave., San Bernardino, CA 92408 or communicate by email at sm.fs.BDFFEEPROP@usda.gov. So I gave bim his space and he seemed to know I was NOT going to harm him either. So, the lesson here is to be awear of your surroundings when going to relieve your self. Or you could get into some serious trouble. The other snake i saw was about 2 weeks earlier. He was a baby gopher snake about 2 feet long. It's that time of year again. Be careful!

It was another weather perfect day. The wind was gently blowing into my face the whole way down hill. And there were powder puff clouds blocking the hot sun occasionally. There were only about 20 persons around the spring area. And @ 12-15 through hikers around the beach area. More PCT hikers appeared later.
I had a thermometer with me. All temps were taken near the center of the pools and near their surface. The creek has gone down enough so all pools are now above the creek water height. The Arizona pool has some creek water flowing into it making the water colder than usual. The temp there was 96 degrees. It was much warmer near the spring side of the pool. Some one had blocked the flow with rocks and sand up hill near the source. So I took them down so it would flow directly into this ( many persons favorite pool). The Anniversary pool was baking in the sun. The temp there was 112 degrees. Some one had obviously just cleaned the debris from this pool. Thank you to whomever. The Womb pool was also warmer than usual at 108 degrees. The Serenity pool was a real delight at 106 degrees. The Contemplation pool had two Africans lovers in it so I did not bother them. They were talking in what sounded like swahilly, an African language. I wondered if they got here legally. Non of my business! They had a beautiful appearance. And seemed to be deeply in love, hopefully.
As the hours passed people were cooling off by jumping into the creek. The water temp at where the beach area was 52 degrees. The water up stream from the Arizona pool was 50 degrees. The outside air temp was 86 degrees. Just before the sun started to go behind the mountain top a large cloud covered the sky cooling every thing and every one for the hike out and up hill. Perfect!
On this trip every one seemed to be very happy to be in my favorite hot spring.
EXCEPT !!! AS I was leaving I found a large bag with about 30 pounds of ugly stinking trash. As I got near to where the raft is to cross the creek I found a smaller bag with about 10 pounds of ugly stinking trash in it. So I put the small bag into the larger bag and hauled it up the big hill. This would have not have been possible if that big beautiful cloud were not there. WTF ! PLEASE every one. Help keep D.C.H.S. clean and beautiful. PLEASE!

In this state if your income is less than 50k and you are over 60 you are exempt from paying income taxes. Or so my taxes guy tells me every year. However, Code enforcement fined me 14 hundred for maintaining an unsafe building on my property. It was so because they refused to give me a permit to refurbish it during the covid crisis. The judge said I had to follow the same rules as every one else. In 1999 they fined me 350$ for NOT having 2 US certified trash cans on public display. The thieves excuse ME politicians get us one way or another. And I am NO exception either. And now my spell checker will not let me spell taxs.taxes. dammit! Don't get me started...
