Acquired from Curved Lake Gallery, Ontario.
This scene is carved in the tradition of the Saint Jean - Port Joli region of Quebec, renowned for it's figure carving. It is, however, an exceptionally large (1.5 x 2 meters) and finely wrought work. Carving in high relief is also unusual for carvers of this region. The subject is a well known Canadian scene taken from a painting of voyageurs of the Hudson's Bay Company of Adventurers descending a fast river with a freight of beaver pelts for delivery to the Factory en route to Europe.
