In southern Iraq’s Dhi Qar governorate, communities stand at the frontline of escalating climate and water challenges. Sand and dust storms (SDS) are not only an environmental threat, but they are also a complex water–land–livelihoods crisis affecting agriculture, health and daily life.

Combining scientific research, field-based action and community knowledge, the International Water Management Institute’s Wiqaya project uses resilient nature-based water solutions to mitigate SDS risks at the source, restore degraded landscapes and support livelihoods. Backed by simulation modelling to assess scaling potential, and by multi-stakeholder collaboration, the project is designed to translate local evidence into credible pathways. These efforts are helping translate local action into scalable pathways for policy uptake, replication and climate investment not only across SDS source hotspots in Iraq, but the wider Middle East region, including areas such as Azraq in Jordan and Deir ez-Zor in Syria.

Wiqaya, meaning “prevention” in Arabic, signals a new approach to addressing the growing threat of sand and dust storms (SDS) in southern Iraq and the Gulf region. Led by the International Water Management Institute (IWMI) in partnership with the Government of Iraq and local stakeholders, the initiative brings together science, policy, and community-driven action to tackle the problem at its source.

This video captures key moments from the official launch and technical workshop, offering a closer look at the collaboration behind Wiqaya. It highlights how nature-based solutions, grounded in local knowledge and supported by research and modeling, are being deployed to restore degraded landscapes and reduce SDS risks.

As climate pressures intensify, Wiqaya reflects a broader shift toward prevention through scalable solutions, built in partnership with those most affected.

In this creative short film, Olufunke Cofie, IWMI’s Africa Director for Research Impact, reflects on the 2026 World Water Day theme “Where Water Flows, Equality Grows”. She is joined by student Alexandra Wogbe, whose drawings help bring her reflections to life.

Across many communities in Africa and worldwide, women and girls are often the most affected when water is far away. But they are not only carrying the burden of water insecurity; they are also the ones shaping the solutions. This film highlights how water and gender equality are interconnected, and reminds us that when women and girls are placed at the heart of water solutions, everyone benefits.

What if communities could prepare for a drought before it ever hits? In Sri Lanka's dry zone, that's exactly what happened. For the first time in the country's history, a drought simulation brought together scientists and local communities to rehearse their response to water scarcity — before a crisis unfolds. This video walks you through how the simulation was run, why anticipatory action saves more lives and resources than disaster response ever can, and what this community-led model means for the future of drought preparedness across the region.

Released following the CGIAR Gender in food, land and water systems conference held on October 7 – 9, 2025 in Cape Town, South Africa. Under the theme “Accelerating quality in Land, Food and Water Systems,” IWMI researchers highlight that scaling innovations are not only about expanding reach or numbers, but about ensuring equity as innovations move from pilot to wider adoption. Scaling processes must actively mitigate unintended consequences for women, youth, and other marginalized groups through inclusive methodologies and monitoring mechanisms.

Technology, knowledge sharing, solid partnerships, and sound policies are key for Africa’s water. Digital tools and open data can, and must, bridge Africa’s water-divide for informed decision-making and a water-secure future. This video highlights the Pan-African Symposium on digital innovations for Africa’s water management that took place from October 21–23, 2025 in Addis Adaba, Ethiopia, and was co-hosted by the International Water Management Institute and Digital Earth Africa, and with support by The Helmsley Charitable Trust.
