SIMULATION training has converted one sceptic in Barminco CEO Neil Warburton. The 30-year underground mining veteran is waiting for results of a six-month assessment program before committing to a hefty investment in the technology. But he already seems quietly confident about the outcome.

Barminco and Australian simulation technology company Immersive Technologies announced an alliance of sorts late last year after Immersive launched its UG360 underground training simulator in August. The contractor bought one transportable UG360 simulator, truck and loader ‘conversion kits’, and a custom mine site virtual environment program, under the initial purchase deal. Not an insignificant outlay, but Barminco will make a multi-million-dollar investment in simulators and software before the end of 2011 if training with the first unit produces the maintenance cost, productivity, safety and other gains being targeted by Warburton.

Immersive Technologies and Caterpillar Inc. have signed the renewal of a global Technical Information and Licensing Agreement for the development of advanced equipment training simulators.

The scope of this agreement sees Caterpillar continue to exclusively provide Immersive Technologies with confidential machine technical information and data that is necessary to simulate Caterpillar machinery. This proprietary information is not available or accessible to any other advanced simulator vendor.

Vale makes major investment in simulation training

Brazilian mining heavyweight Vale has underlined its commitment to recruiting and training local people at its major new Moatize coal project in Mozambique with a significant investment in advanced equipment simulator technology.

Immersive Technologies is supplying Vale with three Advanced Equipment (AE) Simulators, which are expected to be commissioned on site at the end of May 2009. The training simulators will support the Caterpillar 793D haul truck, Caterpillar 992G wheel loader, and Hitachi EX5500 shovel/excavator. Immersive Technologies is also supplying a Custom Mine Site, which accurately replicates the Moatize mine to enhance the realism and value of the training.

Major Australian contract mining service provider Thiess has extended its use of Advanced Equipment (AE) Simulators for operator training into four states as part of a strategy to combat skills and labour shortages, and achieve superior training outcomes.

The Brisbane-based engineering and contracting giant has achieved positive results with an Immersive Technologies AE Simulator at several Queensland mine sites over the past two years. Use of the technology in Western Australia and New South Wales has also produced positive training results.
