It's (hopefully) becoming more clear to Americans (the majority) that the GOP's sole goal in life is to punish everyday Americans. Maybe just maybe they'll start to understand. But the majority of the episode is talking about how Tech Bros and their shareholders have absolutely lost their goddamn minds. First, there's Tesla shareholders approving a $1 Trillion compensation package for Elon Musk despite the fact that he hasn't actually delivered anything. What's worse is when you look at the terms of the pay package, it's clear that is is damn near impossible for him to achieve. 1 Million Tesla robots? No. 10 million autonomous driving subscriptions (they have 12% adoption rate currently)? Taking Tesla fro $1.5 trillion market cap to $8.5 trillion in 10 years? Will never happen. So instead it's just glazing a delusional CEO that hasn't actually built a damn thing himself. If you can, try to make it through his ridiculous remarks during the shareholder meeting. I dare you. But Elon and Tesla are just the tip of the iceberg. Sam Altman and Open A.I. have some how managed to convince of bunch of other rich people that giving them money to burn through is a good idea. Make no mistake. Openly lighting hundreds of billions of dollars on fire might actually be more useful and less damaging to the environment than the hundreds of billions of dollars being thrown at Open A.I to make a chatbot that is a slightly worse Google Chat and also might convince your kids to kill themselves. The financial numbers don't make sense. The products (that don't exist) don't make sense. The damage to the environment doesn't make sense. None of it makes sense. Except...it means "number go up". Kriss is joined by Karen from the Black Guy Who Tips. A good portion of the show we end up talking about the beginning of the discussion between Ezra Klein and Ta-Nehisi Coates on Ezra's podcast. It's a good (if not sometimes frustrating) discussion between the two in which it becomes clear that Klein, is so focused on not losing that it's a set up to not win. Coates challenges (with no real good explanations from Klein) on how to rationalize wanting the left to "learn from" the right in such a short term viewpoint. He brings up the fact that the claim of the "increase in political violence" downplays the political violence experienced by so many marginalized groups for decades. And while Coates doesn't directly say it, we talk about how insulting it is to claim that the Right constantly engages with those that disagree with them while ignoring all the work and engagement that black and brown writers/activists and others do on the left. The whole conversation is both enlightening as well as frustrating because it illustrates just how cowardly so many on the left are and how easily they are willing to throw the less fortunate out if it means scoring political points. Captain America: Brave New World marks the beginning of the second half of The Multiverse Saga. This installment weaves long-dangling threads from 2008’s Incredible Hulk, events from Captain America: Civil War, and a world-shifting revelation from Eternals into an action-forward political thriller. In keeping with early Captain America storylines, Brave New World blends its “state of the sociopolitical landscape” level-set into a plot driven by high-stakes mission and a changing of the political guard. If you’re coming into Captain America: Brave New World off of a (re)watch of The Falcon and the Winter Solider series, temper those expectations. In director Julius Onah’s (Luce) film, Wilson may no longer be conflicted about assuming the mantle of Captain America; but he is wrestling with his role in the US military industrial complex, the pressure to be an unassailable Black hero, and taking repeated hits to his sense of self in an anti-Black system. It’s a subtle (often too subtle), but intentional, schism at play throughout the entire movie. But it pays to remember, Sam Wilson’s tenure as Captain America has just begun. This is not the moment he shakes off the fetters of respectability. Just like in the comics, Wilson’s path forward is a more measured and pragmatic approach to combating inequity and defending against evil; seeming to operate within the realm of current reality rather than aggressively rejecting and dismantling oppressive ideologies and their attendant institutions. As a veteran and counselor (who specialized in helping other veterans suffering from PTSD) he openly advocated for the necessity of harm mitigation while carving out sustainable solutions. He still believes that despite the obstacles and judgment that we (society) can do better. Think John Lewis, not Stokely Carmichael. And that fact alone will be reason enough for some viewers to bounce off Brave New World.
