Metricon CEO Brad Duggan said Australia needed to embrace new ways of building if it was to improve housing supply and affordability.

“Australia doesn’t have a demand problem, we have a housing supply challenge. If we’re serious about building more homes for Australians, we need to continually explore smarter and more productive ways to deliver them.

“As Australia’s largest home builder, we believe we have a responsibility to lead that conversation and to test new construction methods that have the potential to increase housing supply while maintaining the quality and design our customers expect.”

Remarkably, within the first four days of building, the homes progressed from slab to beyond lock-up, becoming weatherproof with fully functioning bathrooms before moving through the final stages of completion.

“This pilot is an important step in understanding where pre-fabricated construction can play a role within a volume-building environment. It’s not about replacing traditional construction, it’s about adding another pathway that could help us build more homes, faster and with greater certainty,” said Brad.

“In locations where the supply chain for conventional construction is constrained, offsite construction can bring more homes to market faster, and that’s a win for Australian home buyers.”

The two pilot homes at Mt Atkinson Estate in Truganina were delivered through a partnership between Metricon, Signex and Stockland. The collaboration combines Metricon’s expertise in delivering thousands of homes each year, Signex’s innovative pre-fabricated construction capability and Stockland’s leadership in creating masterplanned communities.

Everyone Homes, a dedicated division of Metricon Homes, specialising in projects to build social, affordable, and accessible houses, general manager Sam Gribble, said the pilot was designed to test how pre-fabricated construction could move beyond niche applications and become part of mainstream housing delivery.

“For a long time, pre-fabricated homes have been viewed as a niche solution. What makes this project significant is that we’re demonstrating how pre-fabricated construction can work within a volume-building model.

“The opportunity is particularly compelling in regional and growth areas where labour availability can constrain housing delivery. By manufacturing much of the home in a controlled environment, we’re able to reduce weather impacts, improve quality control and significantly streamline on-site construction.”

The homes were constructed using pre-fabricated wall panels manufactured off site in a controlled factory environment, enabling greater precision, improved quality control, reduced material waste and minimised weather-related delays. Approximately 90% of each home was manufactured off-site before being transported and assembled at Mt Atkinson.

Each home features three bedrooms, two bathrooms and open-plan living spaces designed for modern Australian families while achieving a 7-star energy rating.

“Importantly, these homes are virtually indistinguishable from conventionally built homes. They’re built on traditional slab-on-ground foundations using high-quality, robust materials, delivering the same look, feel and liveability Australians expect,” said Sam.

While still a pilot, the project provides valuable insights into how pre-fabricated construction could complement traditional building methods and support future housing delivery across Australia.

Brad said innovation would continue to be critical if Australia was to meet its long-ter housing needs,

“There is no single solution to Australia’s housing challenge. It will take collaboration, investment and innovation across the entire industry. We’re proud to be testing new approaches that have the potential to make a meaningful difference.”

With an eye for beauty and a penchant for travel, Emma put her background as a retail buyer and stylist into play to create a business that celebrates provenance and history, creating homes that are storied and full of life. 

Tell us about SECONDI. What do you do, and how did SECONDI get started?

“SECONDI is a curation of all of the unique and beautiful vintage furniture and objects that I source on my travels through France and Italy. I’m particularly focussed on authentic and interesting design from the mid-20th Century.

SECONDI grew organically from a forced career shift during COVID. I had always collected vintage pieces and grew up surrounded by antiques as my family has a long history of dealing in vintage, both furniture and clothing. It’s a bit of a long story – my brother and I were searching for a specific piece of furniture for my mother’s 70th birthday. We sourced it but it came as a set and we only wanted the one piece. We kept that one piece as a birthday gift. My brother then restored some of the other pieces and then sold them at a profit.

“I was not working at the time, due to COVID restrictions, and it occurred to me that I could turn my interest in vintage furniture and markets from a hobby into a job while I waited for things to return to normal. I started sourcing pieces locally in Sydney and selling them, and discovered a real appetite for vintage within the Australian market. I then experimented with a few vintage objects that I had sourced from overseas dealers and realised there was an even greater appetite for vintage Italian and French items. Five days after the borders reopened and international travel recommenced, I was on a plane to Paris and Italy where I began my next journey into sourcing in those markets. I’ve never looked back!”

You’ve spent years building relationships with dealers across France and Italy. How did you build that network, and what kind of access does it give you that the average buyer wouldn’t have?

“Developing this network of dealer relationships has required a significant investment of time, money, and regular trips to Europe. I return to the same markets and fairs at least two to three times a year; consequently, the dealers you meet become confident that you are a serious buyer and they learn to trust you and know your taste.

“These relationships mean that most mornings I will wake up to many many images that have been sent to me overnight from dealers who have items they think I might be interested in buying. It also means that when I am in Europe I am invited to their homes and warehouses, which gives you access to so many more items than what you will see them selling at the markets. It’s about building strong relationships and trust – the same applies to most businesses.”

Got any tips on what to look for when buying vintage, to ensure quality and authenticity?

“Where possible, it’s best to view items yourself before buying. Vintage pieces are undoubtedly higher quality than those made today, but they do show signs of age and patina. It’s always good to ask if there are any original maker’s marks or labels, although very often these will  have worn off over time, or may have been reupholstered over in the case of armchairs and sofas. Otherwise, sourcing from someone who has built the knowledge and expertise over years can provide the assurance – they’ve done the hard work for you.”

Can you recommend particular materials or finishes that age well, or are worth seeking?

“Timbers such as oak and elm always age beautifully. Bamboo, when looked after, develops beautiful warm tones. Murano glass, particularly items made by great producers like Mazzega and Barovier, are just so beautifully made. The craftsmanship is difficult to replicate.”

For someone who loves the idea of vintage, but doesn’t know how to incorporate it into their home, what’s a good starting point?

“Objects such as mirrors, vases, table lamps and wall lights are such a versatile and easy way to start incorporating vintage pieces into your home. They are easy to place in various rooms, and move around the house to find the perfect spot. They don’t have to be a large investment, and will add a level of uniqueness and interest that is difficult to achieve when buying contemporary, mass-produced items.”

When mixing vintage with contemporary pieces, what are some mistakes people make?

“I like to think that there are no mistakes – if you love something you should have the confidence to follow your instincts. My other tip – if you see something you love, buy it! Pieces move so quickly, you can’t be guaranteed you’ll see them again.”

We’re seeing a shift from minimalist, neutral interiors towards warmer, layered, lived-in spaces. What is driving that? Do you think that shift will last?

“I love seeing homes that are interesting and layered. I often reminisce about visiting my friends’ parents’ houses when I was a teenager and how they were much more interesting than a lot of homes seem today. They were authentic, lived-in homes with pieces collected over years and were not driven by trends. Your home is the one place you can truly be your authentic self, so I think it’s only natural that people want this place to feel lived in and real, not a curation of stylised pieces. I hope it continues!”

What’s the most exciting piece you’ve uncovered on a sourcing trip?

“There are quite a few pieces that come to mind, but I think the most exciting for me is a 1950s Italian ceramic mirror by La Farnesiana. It’s so incredibly beautiful and something that I have rarely seen before.”

Is it hard to let go of the pieces?

“I struggle to let go of many of the pieces I source. I buy the things that I love and that speak to me, as opposed to buying according to trends. As a consequence, I could easily keep most of what I buy. If I had the space at home, I would keep more. Luckily, my husband is not a fan of clutter, so this keeps me from taking everything home with me!”

Tell us about Secondi en Aventure. What can guests expect from the experience?

“I’ve been travelling to the South of France for five years now and I lived there for 12 months throughout 2024. Over this time, I developed such a strong affection for the region and its artistic history, I really wanted to open that up to people who share my love of art, architecture and of course antiquing! The tours are designed to highlight the uniqueness of the Cote d’Azur and Provence and to share highlights in terms of design and sourcing.

“I’ve created my dream itinerary. Every moment of the tours has been organised to maximise beauty; from the ateliers we visit, to the incredible accommodation and of course the brocantes and antique centres where we will be sourcing. At the end of the trip, I facilitate the shipping of goods back to Australia, giving tour members the opportunity to purchase and secure pieces that they would not normally be able to access without major expense.”

As an interior stylist, I am always looking for the perfect item for a photoshoot, a private home or a creative project that I am working on. Sydney is brilliant for interiors shopping but the best stores aren’t gathered neatly in one place. Instead, the city is made up of distinct design pockets, each with its own personality.

One area might be perfect for beautiful investment furniture, while another is better for vintage treasure hunting, unusual ceramics or the finishing touches that give a home character.

Whether you are furnishing an entire house or simply looking for one wonderful lamp, these are some of my favourite Sydney precincts for interiors inspiration.

Surry Hills: for beautifully curated homewares

Surry Hills is one of the best places to spend a relaxed day browsing interiors. It has that lovely mixture of established design names, small independent stores, galleries, fashion and excellent places to stop for coffee or lunch.

Visit Maison Balzac for colourful glassware, tableware and home fragrance, then explore DEA store for carefully selected Japanese ceramics and handmade objects. The real joy of Surry Hills, however, is simply walking and seeing what you discover.

The area is particularly good for those smaller pieces that bring a room to life: a carafe for the dining table, an unusual candleholder, a ceramic bowl or a tiny object that adds personality to a shelf.

It is also where fellow stylist Jono Fleming and I begin our Sydney Styling Tours. Surry Hills is wonderfully walkable and allows us to visit a carefully chosen mix of stores while talking about how to shop, style and make more confident decisions for your own home.

Paddington and Woollahra: for polished Australian design

If you are looking for larger furniture, beautiful textiles or an investment piece, set aside an afternoon for Paddington and Woollahra.

Oxford Street is home to some of Australia’s most recognisable design brands. The beautiful Jardan showroom is worth visiting for Australian-made furniture, lighting and homewares, while MCM House is ideal if you love relaxed, sculptural furniture, natural textures and a warm neutral palette. For incredible scents for your home, check out Black Blaze candles and accessories. Nearby, the Tamsin Johnson showroom offers a wonderfully sophisticated combination of contemporary pieces, antiques, art and decorative objects.

Continue into Woollahra for galleries, antiques and Parterre, where European furniture, garden pieces and extraordinary vintage finds are displayed in a suitably beautiful setting and head to Piggott’s Store for colour, fun and Indian hand-block-printed fabrics.

This precinct is wonderful for training your eye; even if you aren’t planning to buy anything immediately. Look closely at the way the showrooms combine colours, materials and different furniture styles. There is always something to take away and reinterpret at home.

Alexandria, Waterloo and Rosebery: for serious furniture shopping

This part of Sydney is less about wandering between tiny boutiques and more about destination showrooms. It is particularly useful when you are searching for a sofa, dining table, outdoor furniture or another significant piece.

The expansive Coco Republic Alexandria showroom brings furniture, lighting, rugs and accessories together under one roof. It is a useful place to compare proportions and see how larger pieces feel in person.

For something with more age and individuality, visit Mitchell Road Antique & Design Centre. Its enormous warehouse is filled with furniture, artwork, lighting, records, collectables and wonderfully unpredictable vintage finds.

Rosebery is also home to The Vault Sydney, where antique, vintage and contemporary pieces are combined in beautifully styled settings. This is an excellent area to visit when you want to mix something old into a more contemporary home.

Few and Far is always a treasure trove of interiors pieces for your home sourced from all over the world- texture and pattern is their thing- and they are a favourite of mine!

Tip: Take measurements before you go, photograph the room you are shopping for and allow plenty of time. These are not five-minute shops.

Newtown and the Inner West: for vintage pieces with personality

Newtown is for people who enjoy the hunt. King Street and the surrounding Inner West are filled with secondhand shops, independent makers, vintage clothing, art and objects you are unlikely to find in a conventional furniture showroom.

Mid-century lovers should visit Vampt Vintage Design, whose Newtown showroom specialises in original furniture, lighting and decorative pieces sourced from Australia and around the world.

In nearby Marrickville, McMullin & Co offers a softer, contemporary collection of furniture, lighting and home accessories.

The Inner West is particularly good when a room feels too new or coordinated. An older chair, painting or lamp can immediately make a space feel more layered and personal.

My advice is not to shop with an overly rigid list here. Know the approximate dimensions you need, but stay open to finding something completely unexpected.

Potts Point and Rushcutters Bay: for antiques and decorative details

Potts Point is compact, elegant and ideal for hunting down smaller decorative pieces.

Potts Point Galleries brings together antiques, ceramics, glassware, jewellery, art and collectables from multiple dealers. It is the kind of place where you need to look in every cabinet and corner because the best find may be something very small.

Nearby Rushcutters Bay is home to Parterre’s outdoor showroom, making this a particularly useful stop if you are working on a courtyard, balcony or garden.

This area is lovely when you want to make a morning of it: browse for antiques and decorative pieces, stop for coffee and pay attention to the beautiful old apartment buildings along the way. Inspiration doesn’t only come from inside the shops.

Brookvale and Balgowlah: for relaxed Northern Beaches style

Sydney’s Northern Beaches have their own interiors personality: relaxed, natural and slightly less formal, but not limited to predictable coastal decorating.

In Brookvale, Tangerine & Teal is a destination for restored mid-century furniture, including pieces by well-known Australian makers. It is a brilliant place to look for timber furniture that will bring warmth and history to a room.

The new flagship King Furniture showroom in Balgowlah is another helpful stop for generous sofas, tonal upholstery and laid-back contemporary furniture.This part of Sydney is particularly good for rooms that need to feel comfortable and practical while still being beautifully considered.

A Few More Sydney Shopping Spots Worth the Trip

• Windsor: Visit Manor on George for beautiful vintage furniture, antique finds and unique decorative objects with plenty of personality.
• Avalon: Perfect for a lovely slow Sunday shop and a mooch around the village’s independent boutiques and homewares stores. Beachwood is a good place to begin.
• Auburn: The enormous Savers superstore is brilliant for some proper op-shopping fun, with clothing, books, homewares and unexpected secondhand treasures.
• Caringbah: Visit the Kerrie-Ann Jones showroom for a gorgeous, high-end edit of European mid-century furniture, contemporary art and beautifully curated objects.
• Glebe: Orient House is a two-storey treasure trove of one-of-a-kind furniture, architectural pieces, tribal art and decorative finds sourced from Africa, India, China, Bali and beyond.

How to shop like an interior stylist

Before heading out, take photographs and measurements of your room. It also helps to bring samples of any important colours or materials, such as fabric, paint or flooring.

Most importantly, don’t feel that everything needs to come from the same shop. The most interesting homes combine different sources, eras and price points. Look for one piece that solves a practical problem and another that simply makes you smile.

Sometimes the best purchase is not the object you planned to find, but the one that change the direction of the entire room.

I’ve just returned from Milan, from Salone del Mobile, the world’s biggest design fair for architecture and interiors. This is the third time I’ve attempted the trip. The first time I was booked to go to Salone del Mobile, COVID cancelled it. The second, personal circumstances got in the way. This year, I finally got there, as part of an ACFA tour alongside a group of designers, cabinet makers, and suppliers. 

And it was worth the wait. This year’s focus was Eurocucina, with a strong concentration on kitchens and bathrooms. It was an extraordinary experience, and I came home with a head full of ideas, some of which I think will be adapted for the residential and commercial market in Australia.

After a week of walking, staring, photographing and generally obsessing over beautiful spaces, a few clear themes emerged.

Colour is the new black 

If there’s one word that defines this year’s fair, it’s colour. Deep russets, rich greens, and earthy  tones dominated the halls. But it wasn’t just accent colours. There were matchy-matchy combinations: green basins paired with green vanities, coloured baths, coloured toilets. Cohesive, intentional, bold.

Every person does the same thing in Europe. They wander through streetscapes and centuries-old  apartments, castles, completely captivated. They photograph everything: the cobalt tiled kitchen, the terracotta bathroom, the wallpapered alcove, the deeply saturated living room, the ornate ceilings, yet despite this, people come back to ask for white kitchens and bathrooms. 

They want to play “safe”. I’ve been asking myself why that is. And I don’t think it’s simply timidity or a lack of imagination. I think there are some rational reasons why Australian clients pull back from colour. 

Firstly, in Europe, kitchens are largely modular: pre-built systems that can be swapped out relatively quickly and affordably. Here in Australia, custom-built joinery dominates. We demand quality, precision, fit, and purpose-built. This sort of investment is expected to last for years; hence, I believe, why people shy away from colour. In Europe, kitchens turn over every five to eight years. In Australia, we’re typically looking at 15 years or more before a client renovates again. That’s 15 years of asking yourself whether you still love that deep green. However, over the last few years, post covid, I feel this is slowly changing, as after months of living in their sterile homes, people are now realising colour and pattern bring joy to a space.

The other main reason is light. European interiors, especially in the northern countries, are designed to work hard during long, grey winters. Colour, pattern, and texture aren’t just aesthetic choices there. They’re functional ones. They bring warmth, life, and energy into spaces that might see limited natural light for months at a time. Australian light is completely different. Our sun is intense, high and bright. And for much of the year, in Sydney especially, we live with our doors open to the garden, to the bush, to the harbour. Our natural colour palette comes inside: the greens of the garden, the blues of the water, the ochres of the stone. Our interiors are already in conversation with extraordinary colour.

That said, change is coming. The James Hardie Modern Homes Forecast 2026 reports that the way Australians relate to their homes has fundamentally changed since the pandemic. The report identifies a growing need for homes to foster a closer relationship with nature through biophilic and restorative design: environments that support long-term health, comfort, and resilience. Key directions it flags include spaces that reflect personality and promote joy, colour, texture, and form used to evoke emotional connection, and environments that nurture optimism, comfort, and creative renewal. That’s not a minor stylistic shift. That’s a change in what people fundamentally believe their home is for. 

When a home is primarily an investment vehicle or a functional shelter, neutral reads as sensible. When a home is understood as a place of restoration, identity, and joy, somewhere that actively supports your wellbeing, colour and pattern start to feel not just acceptable, but necessary. They become part of how a space does its job.I think this is the real reason we may finally be ready to embrace more of what Europe has been doing for decades. Not because we’ve suddenly decided to copy Milan, but because our relationship with home has matured. We’ve lived through a period that forced us to truly inhabit our spaces, and many of us found them wanting. Too safe. Too anonymous. Not quite ours.

The joinery economics and the light argument are still valid. But I do think we’re entering a period where Australian clients will be more willing to make a genuine commitment to colour and personality in their homes, particularly where it connects them to the natural world around them. Biophilic greens, earthy terracotta, textural layering that mimics landscape: these aren’t trends imported from Europe so much as expressions of something we already live with outside, finally being invited in.

So, how do we adapt the trends seen in Milan to an Australian aesthetic? 

The trends I saw at Salone that I believe will translate well here are those rooted in quality, texture, and considered detailing: things that earn their keep over 15 years rather than exciting you for five. A beautifully crafted shadow line detail on a benchtop. Integrated joinery lighting. Waterproof wallpaper in a shower niche. A slightly bolder basin choice. These are moves that add depth and personality without requiring a wholesale commitment to a palette you might feel differently about in a decade.

Colour can absolutely work in Australian homes, and I’d love to see us be braver about it. But the versions that will age well are those chosen with our light, our landscape, and our renovation cycles in mind. Not lifted wholesale from a Milanese showroom and dropped into a Northern Beaches kitchen because it looked extraordinary in a photograph.

That’s the difference between being inspired by Europe and being informed by it.

Every millimetre matters 

Perhaps the most consistent theme across the entire fair was the obsession with utilising every single centimetre of space. Integrated storage was another big theme. Everything had a dual function. Nothing was wasted.

Curves 

Curved cupboard fronts and rounded joinery profiles were everywhere including furniture: not just as an aesthetic choice, but as a way to make spaces feel softer and more resolved while eliminating wasted corners. 

Celebrating constraints 

One of the cleverer innovations was how designers handled material joins. Rather than trying to hide where panels met, they made those junctions a design feature, integrating hooks, open shelving, and storage containers directly into the join. Instead of concealing a constraint, you lean into it and make it beautiful.

Refined and considered benchtops 

The benchtop profile trend is shifting. What I saw in Milan was a move toward slimmer profiles, around 12mm, with a shadow line detail underneath. It’s a cleaner, more refined look compared to the thicker profiles we’ve seen for the past several years. I have already seen slimmer bench profiles happening in Australia before I left. In Milan, I also saw chamfered edges with trim, though I think the Australian market is less likely to adopt this. Upturns on kitchen benches were also present, though I suspect that’s more a European response to smaller spaces than something we’ll adopt widely here, given our larger kitchens.

Taps that make coffee

One standout product that I genuinely believe could take off in Australia: a hot water mixer tap that dispenses sparkling water, boiling water, and ambient water, but also has a pod system built in so you can make coffee directly from the tap. If that makes it to the Australian market, I could see it becoming a serious statement piece in a high-end kitchen.

Tapware becoming jewellery 

More broadly, tapware is getting more ornate and jewellery-like for the luxury end of the market: think gem-like details on mixers and tap bodies. It’s directional toward a European and Middle Eastern aesthetic, but it signals a broader willingness to treat functional items as decorative objects.

Wallpaper in the shower 

This was one of my biggest wow moments of the trip: waterproof wallpaper designed for wet areas, including showers. We all hate grout. And in humid environments, maintaining tiled surfaces is genuinely challenging. Shower-safe wallpaper opens the door to incredible variety in pattern and colour, in a space that’s historically been limited to tile, stone, and paint. I think this will eventually find its way into the Australian market, and when it does, it’ll be a game-changer for bathroom design.

Lighting that does more 

A few lighting innovations caught my eye. The most interesting was a ceiling-integrated light that functions as a standard downlight when you want ambient illumination, but when you need task or directional light, the fitting drops down like a pendant. Discreet when you want it, functional and statement piece when you need it. 

Colour-temperature adjustment by touch was also very prevalent. As we learn more about the impact of light on mood, focus, and sleep, this kind of intuitive control is becoming less of a luxury feature and more of a design essential.

Joinery with internal lighting was standard across the fair. Open a cupboard, and the light comes on automatically. There were also stunning pendant lights that were simply there as a statement, essentially from my point of view, there to elicit “wow”.

Sustainability 

Sustainability was present at the fair, but perhaps not in the way you might expect. It wasn’t primarily about material certifications or carbon footprints. The sustainability message that came through most strongly was about intentionality: designing things with a purpose, eliminating waste through smart design, and ensuring every element of a space serves a function. No unnecessary elements, no wasted space, no throwaway details. This is the philosophy I use in my designs instinctively.

Health and wellness: The bathroom gets serious 

One of the strongest emerging themes at the fair was the integration of health and wellness into residential design, and nowhere was this more evident than in the bathroom.

Spas, steam showers, saunas, and cold plunge baths were all on show, and these weren’t presented as hotel amenities or luxury add-ons. They were being positioned as standard residential features: things people build into their homes rather than drive to a wellness centre to access. The showstopper in this category was a shower that produced its own snow. 

We’re already seeing strong growth in Australia in personal wellness practices: cold exposure therapy, infrared saunas, ice baths. What used to be the domain of elite athletes and day spas is becoming part of how everyday people think about their health routines. The logical next step is designing homes that support those habits rather than requiring people to leave the house for them.

A well-designed steam shower, a compact sauna, or a cold plunge integrated into a bathroom or outdoor area is absolutely achievable in the Australian residential market. I’d expect to see demand for this growing steadily over the next few years. 

The fun stuff

Not everything at Salone was about utility and innovation. Some of it was just genuinely for fun.

Kids-only bathrooms were a thing. Fully designed, completely whimsical spaces created entirely for children, with playful shapes, bright colours, and a sense of fun that most adults would secretly love for themselves. They were charming and creative, and I absolutely adored them. Will we see dedicated kids’ bathrooms in Australian homes anytime soon? Honestly, I can’t see it. But I did find myself thinking they’d translate beautifully into a childcare centre or a paediatric clinic: somewhere that needs to feel safe and joyful for little people. 

A double bath designed for two was on show. Could it find an audience in Australia? Possibly. It would take the right client, the right bathroom. Personally, for me, soaking in a bath is “me” time. 

More memorable still was a bath where the colour of the water changed. I genuinely cannot see that landing in the Australian market, but it was playful and unexpected and made everyone who walked past stop and look twice. Which is, in fairness, exactly what good design is supposed to do.

And then there was the bath that looked as though it had been sculpted from bubbles: a black glossy exterior with a gold-plated interior. Dramatic, maximalist, and very firmly aimed at a European and Middle Eastern luxury aesthetic. It was about as far from an Australian sensibility as it’s possible to get, and yet it was impossible not to appreciate the confidence of it. Design that commits completely to a vision, however niche, is always worth paying attention to. Spectacular to look at, and a good reminder that design at its most unrestrained is really just another form of art.

Outdoor living

Designers were using solid materials and bold organic forms, shapes that referenced the body, that curved and contoured in ways you wouldn’t expect from hard surfaces. And yet they were remarkably comfortable to sit in. The form was doing the ergonomic work that cushioning usually does. It was a clever, considered design that happened to also look extraordinary.

Oversized pots and planters were everywhere, and they were spectacular. Statement pieces in their own right, with texture, weight, and presence that turned a terrace or garden into something that felt designed rather than simply furnished.

This naturally translates to the way Australians actually live. We use our outdoor spaces differently from most Europeans. Our climate allows us to treat a terrace, a courtyard, or a garden as a genuine extension of the home rather than a seasonal bonus. The sculptural forms, the textural layering, the play of shape and material: all of it sits beautifully within an Australian outdoor context. 

So, what does this mean for Australian design? 

I came home from Milan with enormous respect for European design. But I also came home with a renewed appreciation for what the Australian kitchen and interiors industry has quietly achieved. The Eurocucina hall, the kitchen-focused section of the fair, was genuinely impressive. However, there was very little there that I hadn’t already seen. The detailing, the material combinations, the integration of appliances and storage, the craftsmanship: these were things I recognised. Things we’re already doing here and should be proud of.

Some of what I saw in Milan will translate directly to the Australian market. Slimmer benchtop profiles, integrated joinery lighting, waterproof feature wallpaper, and a slightly braver approach to colour and texture all feel relevant and achievable here.

Other innovations are better suited to the European context they were designed for. The fulcrum-based overhead cupboard system, for instance, requires ceiling heights that most Australian homes simply don’t have.

But perhaps the most valuable thing I brought home from Milan wasn’t a trend at all. It was a clearer understanding of why we design the way we do here, and why that’s not always something to apologise for. Our spaces are larger, our light is extraordinary, and our connection to the outdoors is a genuine design asset. The best European influences are the ones that enhance all of that, rather than override it.

The project, run by Adelaide University, the South Australian Government and industry partners, focused on relatively simple upgrades to existing homes in the remote small township of Indulkana, an Aboriginal community in the Aṉangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (APY) Lands in South Australia.

The final report, published in June 2026, provides findings that the retrofitted houses are warmer in winter, cooler in summer and more energy efficient, which can help reduce pressure on government-funded electricity supplies.

The APY Lands Energy Efficiency Retrofit Pilot, part of the national RACE for 2030 Cooperative Research Centre, was developed in response to concerns from residents and government agencies about the high energy demands and poor thermal comfort of housing in Indulkana. While the APY Lands are often associated with extreme summer heat, researchers found that winter was also a major challenge for many households.

Before the project began, more than half of residents interviewed said their homes were always cold during winter. Many relied on electric heaters for long periods and some even used ovens and stovetops for warmth.

“People were telling us they felt cold inside their homes even though the houses had been designed to perform well,” said Adelaide University researcher Professor Ke Xing, from the School of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering.

“We wanted to understand why that was happening and identify practical solutions that could improve thermal comfort while reducing energy demand for heating and cooling.”

Building assessments revealed significant impacts caused by air leaks, gaps in the building envelope, and thermal bridging, where heat escapes through framing and other structural elements.

The project team worked closely with residents, community leaders and local tradespeople to design,  test and implement upgrade solutions. Six homes received upgrades ranging from gap-sealing and improved ceiling insulation through to additional external wall insulation, while another six homes were monitored for comparison.

The difference was immediately noticeable, Prof Xing said. “After the retrofits, residents reported feeling warmer even without heaters running and said they needed heating for much shorter periods. In summer, many households reported using cooling systems for only a few hours a day rather than continuously.”

Monitoring and testing confirmed the changes weren’t just perceptions. The retrofitted homes required significantly less electricity during cold weather, with energy savings estimated at around 20 kilowatt-hours per day on colder days.

The upgrades also reduced air leakage by an average of 53%, helping homes maintain more stable indoor temperatures despite the harsh desert climate.

The benefits extend well beyond thermal performance and liveability.

Researchers estimate even basic retrofit treatments could save households around $400 a year in electricity costs. Because electricity supply in the APY Lands is heavily subsidised, government savings are estimated at more than $2600 per household annually.

If implemented across all 411 South Australian Housing Trust homes in the APY Lands, the savings could exceed $1 million every year.

The project also offers environmental benefits, with modelling indicating emissions reductions of more than 10 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent per household each year.

Dr Xing said the findings are particularly important as climate change brings more frequent temperature extremes. Remote communities are often on the frontline of climate impacts,” he said.

“Improving their housing helps people stay comfortable and healthy on Country, while also reducing energy demand and emissions. It’s a practical climate adaptation solution that delivers benefits immediately, and for the future.”

The project also produced culturally appropriate energy education materials in Pitjantjatjara and English, alongside training resources to help build local skills and support future retrofit programs. These materials are publicly available on the Net Zero Energy Builder website.

The South Australian Housing Trust has already begun rolling out retrofit measures to more homes across the APY Lands, and the findings are influencing the design of future housing projects.

Researchers believe the lessons learned could benefit remote, regional and Indigenous communities across Australia facing similar challenges around energy affordability, housing quality and climate resilience.

“This project shows that small changes can make a big difference,” Prof Xing said.

“When people are more comfortable in their homes, the benefits flow through to health, wellbeing, household budgets and community resilience.”

With support from the Attorney General’s Department (Aboriginal Affairs and Reconciliation), Adelaide University researchers partnered with the SA Department for Energy and Mining, the SA Housing Trust, Powertech Energy, ATTMA, ICANZ, Kingspan, Sika Australia, Pointsbuild, Efficiency Matrix, Deep Space, TAFESA and community focused organisations such as Healthabitat and Nganampa Health Council. They also worked closely with the Iwantja (Indulkana) Community Council and residents, including Aṉangu Energy Education Workers supported by MoneyMob Talkabout.

According to recent search data, global TikTok searches for ‘home spa ideas’ increased by 119% over a 24-hour period alone (June 2026), whilst ‘wellness room at home’ increased by 83% during the same period, reflecting the growing consumer demand for homes that support wellbeing and encourage moments of relaxation throughout the day.

While wellness once centred around gyms, spas and luxury retreats, many homeowners are now looking for ways to recreate those experiences at home. Rather than undertaking costly renovations, many are turning to simple styling and design changes to transform everyday spaces into personal sanctuaries.

For Cayley Scrooby, interior stylist at Sovereign Interiors, the bathroom is often the easiest and most effective place to start. “The bathroom is where many of our daily rituals already take place, whether that’s getting ready for the day, enjoying a bath or winding down in the evening,” says Scrooby. “Because it’s already associated with self-care, small changes can have a significant impact on how the space feels.”

The shift also reflects growing popularity in lifestyles centred around slow living and wellbeing. Concepts such as the Scandinavian philosophy of hygge, which embraces comfort, warmth and contentment within the home, have encouraged people to think differently about their surroundings and how they support everyday wellbeing.

With a few thoughtful updates, homeowners can create a spa-like atmosphere that feels luxurious, calming and restorative, without picking up a sledgehammer.

Why the bathroom has become the wellness hub of the home

While wellness design can be incorporated throughout the house, Scrooby says the bathroom is often the easiest place to start.

“The bathroom is already associated with self-care and daily rituals, making it the natural foundation for a wellness-focused space,” she explains. “Small changes can completely transform how the room feels, without the need for a major renovation.”

Unlike kitchens or living rooms, creating a spa-inspired bathroom often relies less on structural changes and more on thoughtful styling, sensory elements and intentional design choices.

Cayley gives her top tips on the small changes you can make to recreate a spa-like experience within the comfort of your own home. 

• Layer your lighting

Lighting plays a significant role in shaping how a space feels.

“Many bathrooms rely on a single overhead light, which can feel harsh and clinical,” says Scrooby. “Introducing softer, layered lighting can instantly make the room feel more relaxing. Wall sconces, dimmable lighting and warm-toned bulbs can help create a calmer atmosphere, particularly during evening routines when people are looking to unwind before bed.”

• Bring nature indoors

Natural materials remain one of the most effective ways to introduce a sense of calm.

Scrooby explains: “Timber accessories, stone finishes, woven baskets and linen towels can soften a bathroom and create a stronger connection to nature. Indoor plants can also contribute to a more restorative environment while adding texture and visual interest.

“We naturally respond to organic materials because they feel grounding and familiar. Even small additions can make a space feel more inviting and less functional.” 

• Reduce visual clutter

One of the defining characteristics of luxury spas and wellness retreats is their sense of simplicity.

Rather than overcrowding surfaces with products, Scrooby recommends editing what is on display and investing in practical storage solutions where possible.

“A clutter-free environment can have a surprisingly positive impact on how a space feels,” she says. “When visual distractions are reduced, the room immediately feels calmer and more intentional.”

• Add simple yet luxurious finishing touches

Wellness design is ultimately about enhancing everyday experiences.

“Simple touches such as plush towels, a bath tray, beautiful soap dispensers or a carefully selected robe can make daily routines feel more luxurious.” says Scrooby.

“The goal isn’t necessarily to recreate a five-star resort, It’s about introducing small details that encourage you to slow down and enjoy moments that might otherwise feel rushed.”

• Engage the senses

Luxury wellness spaces rarely focus on aesthetics alone.

“Fragrance, sound and texture all contribute to the overall experience of a room. Scented candles, essential oil diffusers, calming playlists and soft textiles can help transform a bathroom into a multi-sensory retreat.” says Scrooby.

“People often underestimate how much sensory elements influence the way we experience a space. The most successful wellness interiors appeal to more than just what we see.”

A trend rooted in lifestyle, not aesthetics

As interest in wellbeing continues to grow, wellness interiors are becoming less about following a design trend and more about supporting healthier, more intentional lifestyles.

Whether it’s creating a dedicated reading corner, investing in better bedroom lighting or transforming a bathroom into a calming retreat, homeowners should be prioritising spaces that help them feel good.

“The way we design our homes has a direct impact on how we feel within them,” Scrooby adds. “People are recognising that luxury isn’t just about what a space looks like. It’s about how it supports your wellbeing and enhances your everyday life.”
