This episode, Ollie and I are back in Kurosawa country with the multi-layered “High and Low.” We look at this seemingly innocuous kidnapping thriller and delve into what was happening in Japan that informed Kurosawa’s telling of the story. It’s quite a trip!

This week, I take a look at the unusual – and unusually neglected – film “The Fallen Idol” by the team that brought us “The Third Man” just a year later. It’s intense, frustrating and a wonderful film.

It’s rare that a movie comes along that I have absolutely no context for, but “The Leopard” from 1963 sure took me by surprise. A masterpiece by Italian director Luchino Visconti, “The Leopard” really took me and Ollie by surprise. It’s sumptuous, pensive, melancholy and very long. But not dull. Check it out!

This week, Ollie and I watch Fellini’s “8½” and . . . it’s not awkward at all. It’s actually a great conversation!

This episode, Ollie and I take a look at the 1962 witchcraft thriller “Burn Witch Burn” OR “Night of the Eagle!” Also, I do that terrible Austin Powers impression again and make Ollie very mad.

You want creepy kids? We got creepy kids! Ollie and I watch 1961’s incredible “The Innocents” based on the Henry James novel and written, in part, by Truman Capote. It’s spooky, gothicy, ghosty and great!

This episode, Ollie and I take a look at Hammer’s classic “The Curse of the Werewolf” starring everyone’s favorite problem drinker, Oliver Reed. I say “starring” but Reed doesn’t appear until late in the film and the werewolf doesn’t show up . . . but I’m getting ahead of myself. It’s wolfing time and we are here for it!

This week I’M SPARTACUS! NO, I’M SPARTACUS! No . . . none of us are Spartacus. But, Ollie and I are *watching* Spartacus and it TAKES A WHILE. Because, it’s long. It’s one long movie. Good. But, long.

We’ve officially begun our two-part “Man, Isn’t Plastic Surgery Scary?” series. Plastic surgeons were the worst surgeons, according to filmmakers in the early sixties and “Circus of Horrors” is a prime example of that sentiment. It’s lucky it’s such a great movie!

This episode, Ollie and I get BAVAlous! That makes no sense, but I am leaving it in! Ollie and I watch Mario Bava’s classic witch(?) vampire(?) zombie(?) gothic(?) horror(?) movie(!) “Black Sunday!?

Do you like the beach? Do you like chess? How about Death? GOTCHA! Ollie and I talk death and chess and beaches and the Middle Ages as we tackle “The Seventh Seal!”

It’s about time we got some more of that Monster Man! Ollie and I are back to horror with Hammer’s “The Curse of Frankenstein!” In this movie, Victor IS the monster and the Monster is . . . well, just a monster. BUT. Wow, a war picture. About how terrible people are to each other. During war. That sounds like a real treat. Well, it *was* a real treat! At least for me! For Ollie? Maybe not so much. “Paths of Glory” is Stanley Kubrick’s first “Stanley Kubrick” film and, while it’s not the most cheerful thing in the world, it sure is good. Even Ollie can agree with that!

Who’s ready for some Akira Kurosawa!? NOT US! Ollie and I sit and chat about “Throne of Blood” a movie that liberally adapted from “MacBeth” but that goes its own way. I liked it a lot. Ollie . . . had thoughts. It’s pretty rad and pretty sad and everyone acts pretty bad. But, it’s a classic!

Ollie and I finally get around to “The Night of the Hunter” which, I’ll be honest, is a profoundly strange movie. We cover a bit of the backstory, a bit of the symbolism and a LOT of the WTFism. It’s great. I mean, it’s really really great.

HEY EVERYONE! OLLIE IS BACK!

In this episode, we get to the amazing and very misunderstood 1954 classic “Godzilla!” It’s not a monster mash! It’s not a cheesy goofy movie! It’s a serious mediation on the devastation wrought upon Japan and the nation’s steady slide into becoming active participants in that devastation. Also, a guy in a lizard suit? Also, a Frankenstein story? It’s a lot! Join us!

Get ready for some SCARRRY HORROR! It’s the most gruesome, frightening film ever made: “The Thing!” Oh, wait. Sorry. No. It’s “The Thing From Another World!” Not that gruesome. Not that frightening. Not scary. But, man, what a lot of talking there is!

Ollie and I end up somewhat underwhelmed by this cinematic classic, but maybe you’ll like it? Let’s find out!

Ollie and I delve into the post-surrealistic world of Second Wave Luis Buñel with 1950’s “Los Olvidados!” Along the way, we learn to pronounce Buñuel, get a lesson in Surrealism and debate the pros and cons of a relentlessly bleak narrative. It’s fun!

This week, we’re back with more Preston Sturges! Only, instead of taking a hard look at America and wealth and art, we’re taking a hard look at trying-to-kill-your-wife! Yes, it’s 1948’s “Unfaithfully Yours” where Rex Harrison really overreacts to a couple of lines in a detective’s report and plots to kill his maybe-not-actually-cheating wife and then hilarity ensues.

No, seriously, it’s actually quite funny.

This week, Phil is taking a quick peek at Jean Vigo’s 1934 masterpiece, “L’Atalante.” It was his greatest film. It was his lastest film.

We are back with MOAR DICKENS! This time, it’s the literally ill-advised “Oliver Twist” from 1948. David Lean was told not to make this movie, but he did and oh boy here it is! It has a lot of problems with some sticky antisemitism issues, but it’s also a brilliantly made film in a lot of ways. So . . . what can you do?

Guillermo del Toro said about this and “Great Expectations”:

Most people remember David Lean for his big-scale epics, like Doctor Zhivago, Lawrence of Arabia, or The Bridge on the River Kwai. But here he is at his most precise and poetic. Both movies are epics of the spirit, and both are plagued by grand, utterly magical moments and settings; whether showing Oliver’s mother straining and in pain, by intercutting with a flexing branch of thorns, or by lovingly lingering on Miss Havisham’s decaying splendor, Lean understand the need for hyperbole in order to manage the larger-than-life Dickensian archetypes. Some of the passages in both films skate the fine line between poetry and horror.

So, enjoy!

Ollie and I are back with the Ecstasy of Influence to talk about 1944’s “The Uninvited!” We’re also getting increasingly frustrated at movies about women in which the women the movie is about have no voice but are assumed to be bad and also maybe lesbians and also young women are given to older men. It’s a thing and we’re . . . kinda tired of it?

I said ARE YOU READY TO WALK?!

Well then let’s walk. With a zombie. Ollie and I are back with more Ecstasy of Influence and yet ANOTHER retelling of the Jane Eyre . . . myth? Is it a myth at this point? Because it sure seems like Hollywood was only telling one story and that story was Jane Eyre. Regardless, two things stand out about this one. 1) it’s quite good and B) every movie from here on in is about repressed homosexuality. That’s certainly the case with “I Walked With A Zombie!” ENJOY!

We’re back with our third (and final?) Hitchcock film (Ollie: Good) 1943’s “Shadow of a Doubt!” Even though we’ve actually enjoyed each and every one of Hitch’s films, we’re ready to move on, away from the theme of “naïve young woman gets taken in by a seemingly malevolent older man.”

In “Shadow of a Doubt” a naive young woman gets taken in by a . . . well, you get it. This is a big turning point for Hitchcock, though, as he finally settles in to small-town America and really brings the humor and charm that will stand as a contrast to the darkness in his films. Ollie and I really liked this one a lot!

Orson Welles! John Houseman! Aldous Huxley! Joan Fontaine! Uncredited Elizabeth Taylor! It’s a cavalcade of disparate talents as Ollie and I watch Robert Stevenson’s “Jane Eyre” from 1943! This rounds out our “Funtaine!” trilogy and ends on a bang. What have we learned? Don’t date creepy guys with secrets. Seems like a good lesson, really.

The Hitch is BACK, BABY! We’ve got another Hitchcock film and it brings back our favorite Joan Fontaine! In “Rebecca” Fontaine played a mousy young woman, swept away by a charming, if sinister, good looking man into a world where she began to feel like her life might be on the line. In “Suspicion” . . . that . . . that kinda happens, too.

Ollie and I pick apart the plot, characters and poor Beaky’s unusual and easily avoidable death. It’s 1941’s “Suspicion!”

Ollie is NOT convinced that they will like “Sullivan’s Travels” BUT . . . well, maybe they do? It’s always hard to tell with teens.

Ollie doesn’t care about the Oscars, so this one is really short.
