Top US and European names head to this leading French jazz festival this July

There are a number of eye-catching headline concerts announced for the 62nd Jazz à Juan that runs from 10 to 21 July in Juan-les-Pins, Antibes, France. Numerous big names jazz and world artists appearing include the Brad Mehldau Trio, Branford Marsalis Quartet, Youn Sun Nah, Melody Gardot, Lizz Wright and crossover classical pianist Ludovico Einaudi, and a concert with French Comorian singer Imany, Angélique Kidjo and Fatoumata Diawara. Others who will be performing on the historic Pinède Gould stage will be recent double Grammy winner Samara Joy, fellow Grammy winner Jacob Collier, festival favourites Nile Rodgers and Chic, leading European Afro-jazz fusion band Sixun making their first stage appearance for 13 years, and guitar star Joe Bonamassa.

Two of the main concerts are free, one being the part church service-part Gospel concert that traditionally ends the festival and the other being the 14 July French National Day concert, which is traditionally topped off with fireworks. Also free are the Jammin' Juan Summer Sessions taking place before the night's main concert and featuring a carefully selected line-up of emerging European jazz groups, several of which will have earned their place by impressing at the previous November's Jammin' Juan Jazz market place. The festival programme also includes Marching Bands in the streets, a late night Festival jazz club and, new this year a nightly After Party on the beach and morning jazz down the road at Antibes' media centre, plus a jazz themed exhibition and guided jazz walks.

The Montreux Jazz Festival, which was forced to cancel last year's edition due to the pandemic, said Tuesday it was moving towards a hybrid model, including livestreaming concerts.

Organisers said they had reached a deal with Qello Concerts by Stingray for livestreaming, allowing live events and digital projects to be combined.

"Streaming is a crucial medium for securing the continued success of the festival: if people can’t come to the Festival, we will bring it to them," said Nicolas Bonard, head of Montreux Media Ventures.

They are also creating a new brand, MJF Spotlight, dedicated to promoting emerging talent through digital content.

Taking place in the idyllic Swiss town of Montreux on the shores of Lake Geneva, the summer event has over the past half century become a magnet for big names and rising stars.

The jazz label has been retained despite an expanding repertoire over the years, bringing in the likes of Nina Simone, Johnny Cash, Deep Purple, Prince and Nick Cave.

The festival had already in 2019 begun moving towards more of a hybrid model with increased focus on digital content.

But that strategy was accelerated significantly by the Covid crisis, which forced the first cancellation in the festival's history.

Lionel Richie, Brittany Howard, Lenny Kravitz and Black Pumas were among the artists who had been booked for last year.

However the festival "continued to keep its lights on", organisers said, pointing to several initiatives including the free online publication of 50 legendary concerts.

The programme for this year's festival, expected to take place July 2-17, will be published in coming weeks.

Vilnius oldest jazz festival is a great town's tradition and every jazz fan's autumn eve. As usually, avant-garde jazz oriented program didn't change much this year, at least from first announced participators list. Great surprise is re-vitalized Art Ensemble of Chicago gig - with some original members and young rising stars on board as well.

Vilnius Mama Jazz 2019 announced first artists

Comparatively young but fast growing and already really respectable Vilnius Mama Jazz Festival has been based for some years on city's main street, in State Drama Theater halls. Since the Theater building and scenes are on deep reconstruction from last year, for Autumn 2018 Mama Jazz returned back where it has been placed some years ago - outdated Lithuanian Russian Drama Theater (and former Vilnius Opera house built more then 150 years ago). This November it tries another (and very new for it) space - Contemporary Art Centre (CAC),a Soviet realism architecture's example built in 1964 right in a heart of the Old Town. Currently a true heaven for Academy of Arts students and all unorthodox art students and youth, it was a home for some minimalist or electronics music concerts before, it will be really interesting to hear how jazz will sound there.

This year the festival (already 18th in row) will take place between 13 and 17 of November, a few very first participants announced sound really intriguing.

Despite the less-than-summery weather, the great outdoors beckons this weekend. Jazz lovers should not miss the Jazz Seasons festival at the bucolic estate of Leninskiye Gorki. If you stay in the city, don’t miss some comedy in the park on Sunday night. Dress warmly, bring an umbrella and laugh at the weather.

Jazz at Leninskiye Gorki

This weekend Igor Butman kicks off Moscow’s summer jazz festivals with Jazz Seasons at Leninskiye Gorki . The festival will be held Saturday and Sunday from 3 p.m. to about 9 p.m., showcasing musicians from Russia, the U.K. and U.S. — almost a dozen groups altogether. Saturday begins with two Russian groups, Amber Sept and the Project of the Future, headlined by a 13-year-old singer getting rave reviews. In the evening, the U.S. jazz fusion group Oregon will be back on the stage in Russia after a 15-year hiatus. Igor Butman and his band will top off the evening. Sunday starts off with Olga Sinyaeva and the Anton Cherkurov Sextext and ends with Britain’s Toni Momrelle.

Come early to enjoy the beauty of the old estate, get a bite to eat at the food court, and claim a good viewing spot. Chairs will be provided, but bring blankets. And don't leave your kids with the nanny. Bring them along to enjoy supervised games and activities while their parents sway to the music. Tickets are 1,000 rubles per day or 1,500 rubles for both days.

Topic started by snobb — Traditional Vilnius Jazz Festival just closed its scene with czech pianist E.Viklicky trio concert in piano.lt hall yesterday, but after three weeks another great jazz eve is coming. Vilnius Jazz Fest is a fiesta for experimental,avant-garde jazz and related music lovers, upcoming (and much younger) Vilnius Mama Jazz Fest as rule presents well known jazz artists from wide specter of more accessible jazz genres.

This year program contains US trumpeter Terence Blanchard, ECM sax player Mark Turner, ex-Ganelin Trio drummer Vladimir Tarasov with his new Lithuanian Art Orchestra,American nu-jazzers Kneebody and great innovator Steve Coleman with his Five Elements among others.

Topic started by snobb — Not really a jazz festival, this musical event could be recommended for fans of great atmosphere which becomes more and more rare thing nowadays.

I am a hot fan and regular visitor of Suwalki Blues (have been there at all but one fests from very beginning)and I will be there next weekend again!

The town of Suwalki has difficult history: after Russian Empire occupied Poland few ages ago small town became Russian main fort on the border with (German) Eastern Prussia. During wars it became Prussian, Russian again and at last - Polish. Russian Empire returned it back, but after Communists revolution in Russia Suwalki became Lithuanian. Before WWII the town became Polish again - but stayed almost abandoned in the Poland's North Eastern "bear's corner". During last decade Polish regional authorities try to push more life in this area of beautiful nature, Suwalki Blues is one of main region attraction.

The event runs three days with lot of concerts around. Two main scenes are placed in the town's central square and are attractive because of free entrance! Near ten of town's restaurants and bars have scenes for free or ticketed concerts from midday till late night all three days long. The town is pedestrian friendly - you will need a car only to reach Suwalki, than you will spend all three days traveling by walk.

Main concerts usually attracts few hundreds fans, and the public is great! Last decade I become more and more disappointed by concerts - there are too many of them around and listeners became lazy and extremely snobbish. Not in Suwalki - average listener there is agricultural worker or just small provincial town citizen, who listen music mostly by radio. This live show is yearly event no.1 there - and people openly and very naturally enjoy music, doesn't matter how good it is! It like just to return back to times when music fests weren't just huge beers companies advertising machines!

Food is cooked right on the central square, you can buy "karkuvka" (grilled pork meat) or "kilbase" (grilled sausages) portion paying tiny 2 Euros (less than 3 bucks) plus two more buck for half-litre beer and to eat/drink just sitting on the grass and listening free music!

And -they try to present not only local, but world known artists as well: I saw there live such nice acts as Ten Years After, Canned Heat, The Yardbirds, Glenn Hughes, etc,etc

This year's program could be attractive for jazz-related music lovers even more than usually. Two big names on this year's list are ex-Weather Report member and probably most popular Polish fusion musician ever Michal Urbaniak and British legend Jack Bruce.

Michal Urbaniak plays with his daughter vocalist Mika Urbaniak, and Jack Bruce (who is all fest headliner) will present his newest project - Jack Bruce Big Blues Band.

Passionate, fiery and soulful, the top Flamenco and Spanish jazz artists meld with Chick: Latin superstar Concha Buika, the African-Inspired Flamenco singer who sold out New York's Town Hall; flamenco legends guitarist Nino Josele, bassist Carles Benavent and flautist Jorge Pardo (all veterans of Paco De Lucia's band); and one of Spain's most in-demand drummers, Jeff Ballard (who moved to the country to be immersed in his love of Spanish/Flamenco rhythms). Veteran New York saxophonist Greg Osby began his career as a sideman for artists as varied as Herbie Hancock, Dizzy Gillespie, Jack DeJohnette, Andrew Hill, Muhal Richard Abrams, Jim Hall and Jaki Byard. Seeking challenge has been a theme in Osby's career. Upon diving into the New York jazz scene, he often found himself frustrated by his less adventuresome peers. He sought out other musicians who shared his love of exploring musical styles beyond the standard Tin Pan Alley fare. In 1985 Osby was invited to to join Jack DeJohnette's innovative group, "Special Edition". Osby signed with Blue Note Records in 1990 and recorded fifteen outstanding recordings for that label as a leader. In 2008, Osby launched his own label, "Inner Circle Music," which serves as a platform for many of today's brightest artists. The Village Voice critic Francis Davis wrote of his contribution to their double album Upriver, "Greg Osby superimposes his own brand of rhythmic complexity (one fully worthy of Wayne Shorter) on the rhythm section's static vamps every time he steps forward." In 2003 Osby toured with The Dead, which was a reincarnation of The Grateful Dead for a full North American tour. He also has contributed in various lineups with Phil Lesh and Friends. Since 2007, Greg has been an active endorser of P. Mauriat Saxophones.

Critically acclaimed New York "Folk Jazz" saxophonist Daniel Bennett has recently shared concert billings with artists like Bill Frisell, Charlie Hunter, James Carter, Billy Martin (Medeski, Martin & Wood), Jerry Bergonzi, Steve Kuhn, and David Fiuczynski. The Village Voice raves, "saxophonist Bennett makes hay with an airy approach that's buoyant enough to conjure notions of East African guitar riffs and Steve Reich's pastoral repetition." The Boston Herald described Daniel Bennett's music as, "exploratory folk-jazz." Bennett's musical journey began as a graduate student at the prestigious New England Conservatory in Boston, Massachusetts. During this time, Bennett began to compose songs that featured folk melodies played on the saxophone in a jazz quartet format. Bennett's chord progressions also maintained a unique minimalist quality, influenced by composers like Steve Reich and Philip Glass. The Boston Phoenix described Bennett's style as, "an unusual folk-minimalist approach." The Boston Globe described Bennett's music as "a mix of jazz, folk, and trance." The Daniel Bennett Group has released four albums on the Bennett Alliance label, A Nation of Bears, The Legend of Bear Thompson, Live at the Theatre, and Peace and Stability Among Bears. Daniel Bennett's "Folk Jazz" music has found a broad fan base that is unusual for a modern jazz outfit. Insite Magazine called Daniel Bennett's music, "refreshingly capricious and trippy."
