Supplies to Make Your Own B Lack Lace Witchy Decoupage Bottles

To make these fabric lace decoupage spooky bottles you’ll need:

-ecoupage medium like Mod Podge

-Tacky white craft glue or glitter glue

-Glass bottles store bought or recycled bottles

-Black lace

-Black fine glitter

-Brushed

-Scissors

-Interesting dried flowers and stalks

Measure the Lace on the Bottles

It’s easier to place the lace around the bottle before gluing than trying to figure out if it fits after applying the decoupage medium. This can also be done in sections of lace and patched over if one piece doesn’t fit around the entire surface.

Apply Decoupage Medium to the Bottle

Paint the bottle with decoupage medium, covering the entire surface. Lay the lace over the top of the bottle and then paint with another layer of Mod Podge to press the lace flat.

Add the Black Glitter to the Bottle

Once the decoupage medium is brushed over the top. Sprinkle the fine. black glitter over the top while it’s still wet. Shake off any excess and return to the bottle. Let the bottle dry for at least 24 hours before handing. A spray sealer can be added at this time if desired to keep some of the glitter from shedding. If you don’t want glitter, you can skip it, but if you do want a little sparkle after the mod podge dries, paint white craft glue onto the bottles and sprinkle the glitter.

Add the Dried Flowers and Display

While the decoupaged bottles dried, I spray painted and glittered my dried flower heads. I just sniped some coneflowers  from my backyard, but store bought dried flowers would also be pretty in these witchy bottles.

I gave them a coat of gold spray paint and then used the craft glue and gold glitter to make them a bit fancier. If you don’t have those, you could use sticks or even pom poms.

I ended up displaying them on a craft wood slice clustered together with a few pumpkins for a fun and spooky Halloween look.

I like the sparkle the glitter gives them and lightens all of the dark lace. Mod Podge and decoupage are such a fun way to add embellishments to items, like these dried flower decoupage pumpkins.

If you think you are going to use real flowers with water in them, use a sealer on the outside like an outdoor varnish to make them just a bit more durable. Also, don’t immerse them in water when cleaning.

I think bigger bottles would be fun too to make DIY decoupage black lace Halloween bottles. It would be pretty to also do this on recycled jars, or with white lace for the holidays. I like that it’s so versatile!

Supplies for Creating Crafted Spun Cotton Candles

-1″ diameter dowel rods at 4″, 6″ and 8″ length

-Small dowel pieces ” 1 inch in length

-White craft glue

-Decoupage medium or a white craft glue mixture of 6 parts glue to 1 part water

-Spun Cotton batting

-Craft paint in white, yellow, orange, tan, brown and red

-Soft, flat brush

Assemble the Candle Base

To create the faux candles, assemble the base. Glue the small dowel rod to the top of each of the larger dowel rods. This will give the base candle form.

Once the form is dry, use a brush to paint it with white craft paint. This will give it a good base in case the cotton doesn’t cover it all.

Sculpt the Flame

Once the paint is dry, paint a layer of glue mixture or decoupage medium on the surface. Sometimes it helps to work in sections.

Sculpt the Candle

Take a thin, square section of cotton batting and wrap it around the glue covered area. Use the brush dipped in the adhesive to brush over and slightly saturate the cotton while pressing and molding with the brush. Work all of the way around the candle until the entire surface is molded and covered.

Add enough batting until the candle fits inside of a candle holder. This will keep it upright. One the surface is smooth, let the candle dry upright for 24 hours in the candle holder. After 24 hours move the candle from the holder and let the base dry. It’s important to remove it so the wet part doesn’t mold in the candle holder. Let that dry completely in the open air 24-48 hours.

once the candle is completely dry it’s time to paint!

Paint the Outside of the Faux Candle

Paint the outside of the entire spun cotton candle with a white craft paint. Then brush with a tan paint. Brown paint can be added at this time for a more primitive look.

Paint the Flame

Paint the flame by adding a base coat of yellow over the entire flame surface.

And then add red or range at the base.

Blend the two colors together in where they meet. Add some white highlights along the candle. Let dry.

Once the Candle is dry it should fit snugly into your candle holders and  be ready to use in your decor! These are so cute when grouped together on a mantel!

Supplies to Paint a Witch Hat on a Portrait Print

-A copy of a print of antique artwork on cardstock

-Acrylic craft paints in black and white

-Round and flat craft brushes

-Decoupage medium

-Pencil

Print Copies of the Antique Pictures

We took our images from an open access, royalty free art site. There are many of them including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and The Art Institute of Chicago (which we used). Save and print the images on your printer on card stock, or send to your local UPS store or library and have them printed on card stock.

Paint with a Layer of Decoupage Medium

Use a flat brush to paint a layer of decoupage medium over the top of the image. If using a print that came off of an inkjet printer make sure to only go over it once with single strokes because otherwise the printer ink will bleed. Once the first layer of decoupage medium is painted and dry, add a second coat of medium and use a brush to leave brush marks. This will give the artwork texture to make it look more like a painting when it’s dry, especially if a frame isn’t being sued with glass in it.

Draw the Witches Hat on the Printer Picture

Once the decoupage medium is dry, use a pencil and our templates to lightly transfer or draw the witches hat on the printed pictures. This allows to be able to erase and fix lines if needed. Chalk can also be used.

Paint the Witch Hat

Once the hat is drawn, paint the hat in with black craft paint. Use a slightly damp cotton swab to immediately clean off any paint if needed. Let dry.

Add White Painted Highlights

Use a brush to add white painted highlights on the brim of the hat and along the top. Touch up any areas with the black paint as needed and let dry.

Grab the template below for the witch hats. Depending on the position of the person in the image, the hat can change in design.

Seal the Craft Paint

Once the hat is dry, apply a layer of decoupage medium over the top of the hat. Use a brush to create brush strokes to add texture so it looks like a real painting.

Frame the Artwork

Once everything is dry, add the art into a frame and display!

Supplies Needed for a Vintage Halloween Owl Faux Stained Glass Vase

-A pattern (we used a disposable hand towel)

-Stained glass paint and 3D acrylic paint or a acrylic lead paint writer

-a surface such as a vase or an clear acrylic board

-Tape (to hold the pattern in place)

Tape the Pattern to The Inside (or backside) of the Vase

Whatever surface you decide to paint your stain glass paint onto, the pattern gets taped to the underside of what you’re painting on. This way you can use your pattern as a template to draw right over and create your stained glass work of art easily.

Trace Over Your Pattern

We used the Decoart faux stained glass paint that we used comes with a bottle of faux acrylic leading paint to mimic the lead lines of real stained glass. These also create a boundary when flooding your stain glass paint and help to keep it where you want it to go. We used a 3D Decoart writer in the Love Color line because it was just a little darker than the faux stained leading which had a slightly gray cast to it. We used the 3D writer to outline the entire pattern. If using a curved object like a vase, make sure to secure it to keep it from rolling. We also found it helped to work on one side to let it dry so it doesn’t run, and then turn it slightly to work on the other side. To clean up any areas or rough paint lines, use a slightly wet cotton swab  that look a little messy our out of the lines.  Let the faux lead dry before moving onto the next step of the faux stained glass.

Use the Faux Stained Glass Paint

Use the faux stained glass paint to fill in the areas between the leading. We found it helps to squeeze the paint out onto surface and then agitate it slightly. It seems to find it’s own level. It’s better to apply it in thin coats and apply more when dry than add single thick coats. Color the entire design in and let it dry over night.

Remove the Template

Remove the template underneath. It’s important to remove the template. Sometimes and area will look complete filled in and then when the template is removed, it’s easy to see areas that need to be touched up! Touch up right over the areas already painted, letting it dry between coats until the desired depth of color is achieved. Let dry for at least 24 hours.

Follow the Directions on Curing

Depending on the brand of faux stained glass paint used, the directions for curing and durability will be different. Make sure to follow the directions to make sure it holds up as well as possible!

Decorate!

We used ours with a battery operated candle to create a fun and vintage -inspired luminary. It’s so cute at night and with a battery operated candle with a remote it’s easy to switch it on and off! Twinkle lights or a glow stick would also work! This project would also be cute to make at the holidays with a snowy winter scene and would make a fun gift! It would also be pretty with a fun Halloween floral arrangement.

Supplies to Create Your New Sew Ghost Quilt Art

-Canvas Board

-Scrap quilt fabric or scrap fabric of different square sizes

-Decoupage medium

-Flat Brush

-White cotton fabric or muslin

-Black permanent marker

-White craft glue

-Masking tape

Sort the Fabric Scraps

The first order of business is to dig through those fabric scraps and find the perfect scraps for this project. We recommend laying them out and playing with the patchwork pattern before decoupaging them down.

Decoupage the Fabric Scraps to the Board

Using the brush, spread the decoupage medium on the canvas board and place the first piece of scrap fabric down. We recommend placing the biggest ones on the bottom as the base and then layering fabric on top from there. Make sure when applying the fabric near the edges, it hangs over the edge about 1/4 inch so it can be folded over and finished later.  As fabric scraps are added, brush a layer of decoupage medium over the top, each section at a time.

Brush a Coat of Decoupage Medium Over Everything

Once all of the fabric is applied to the canvas board in the patchwork pattern, use the brush to add a coat of decoupage medium over the entire piece of artwork. This will give it an even coat, protect the surface, and make it easier to add the ghost to the top. Let dry completely before moving onto the next step.

Finish the Fabric Edge

Once the board is completely dry, flip the board over. Apply a line of white craft glue to the outer edge of the canvas board. Under the fabric overhang, place a long piece of masking tape and stick the fabric to the tape. Pull the fabric and tape over the glue and tape it to the board. This will hold the fabric edge in place while the glue dries. While drying, move onto the next step to make your cute ghostie!

Draw and Cut Out The Ghost

Using the permanent marker draw a ghost. We have a  printable ghost template at the end of the pot your can trace, but You can see some other ghost templates in this post about how to draw a ghost.  Once the ghost is drawn, add the eyes by drawing on two small ovals and then cut the ghost shape out, cutting just to the inner edge of the black line.

Decoupage the Ghost to the Quilted Board

Add a layer of decoupage medium to the board and apply the ghost.

Once it’s adhered, brush a layer of decoupage medium over the top and let dry.  Once it’s dry, your No Sew Patchwork Ghost Quilt Art is ready for framing! We have a fun way to show you how to frame your art for a primitive and creative project!

Supplies to Paint a Framed Witch Silhouette

-A picture frame with glass or plastic insert

-Printed template

-Multi-surface black paint

-Paint brushes

-Decorative paper either scrapbook, an decorative napkin, or even pretty fabric

-Scissors

-Removable tape

-Cotton swab

Tape the Template to the Front of the Glass

Make sure the inside of the glass is clean before painting on it. Cut the silhouette out and tape it carefully to the front of the picture frame so that the image faces to the inside of the frame. The open the picture frame so that the inside of the insert is facing out leaving the glass or plastic in place. This will be the surface to paint on. The silhouette will be reversed from the printed image.

Paint on The Glass

Using a thin brush paint over the template with multi-surface paint. It’s easiest to outline the image first and then paint and fill it in. This will take several coats, let dry completely between each coat of paint. Use a cotton swab to clean up any loose lines or brush strokes before the paint dries. We also added a cute bow to the witches hair as a little accent.

Remove the Witch Template

Carefully remove the template from the front and take a look and see if there are any areas that need a touch up. Let the paint dry between touch up coats.

Add the Decorative Paper Backing

Once the paint is dry (At least 24 hours), add a decorative paper to the back of the frame that is cut to size. There are lots of options including scrapbook paper, wrapping paper, napkins, vintage or new fabric. It can be made to match any decor for Halloween.

Display Your Witch Silhouette Art!

The Contorted Filbert, aka Harry Launder’s Walking Stick, aka European Filbert is a really cool shrub that has super twisty and misshapen branches. They can grow to about 10 feet tall where I am, but often times die before they get any bigger. These had broken off from my tree in the yard.  You might wonder if you can used a real tree branche for decor. You can, either in their natural state or painted. One thing about painting branches from the yard and bringing them inside…Make sure they are bug-free first so there are no surprises later. Use non-toxic wood, keep them away from open flame or heat, and always use in a safe way. Also, use with caution and keep out of reach of around small children and pets, as the branches could be hazards.

Gather the Supplies

To paint the branches, I used a tarp, craft paint and a paint sprayer. Spray paint could also be used like we did in this spooky luminary project.

Protect the Surface Before Painting

After placing them on a tarp to protect my outdoor surface, I used my HomeRight Super Finish Max Paint Sprayer and black craft paint to help transform my ordinary branches into spooky trees.

Paint the Branches

Make sure to wear proper safety gear when painting and then spray the branches. Using a sprayer  made it easy to paint the branches, because I could tip the sprayer to get in all of the hidden crevices and places that were oddly-shaped.

Turn Branches Over While Spray Painting

I turned the branches over a few times to make sure I covered the entire thing and get into all of the nooks and crannies of the branch. It was also helpful to adjust the nozzle to use a smaller spray pattern, so there isn’t a ton of paint waste with over-spray.

While I was waiting for my branches to dry, I decided to try painting some small pumpkins. Did you know you could paint pumpkins? You can also paint fake pumpkins to make them look more realistic.

They actually turned out kind of cool. If I was going to leave them outside, I would actually paint with an outdoor paint instead of a craft paint. Also, make sure not to mix them up with the fake ones when i’t time to put the decor away!

The branches were the perfect addition and it was easy to make spray painted Halloween decor! To get the branches to stand, I assembled the branches by screwing painted craft squares into the base with a screw.

.Supplies to Paint a Halloween Cat Face

-Paper bag  or canvas

-Craft paints including bright orange, bright green, black, white, red, yellow and pink

-Dimensional paint in black, bright yellow and white

-Paint brushes

-Pencil for tracing and/or black marker

Transfer the Template

Trace or transfer the cat face template onto your surface. You can used this technique here to transfer your image. Once the image is transferred feel free to go over the lines with a black marker if it makes it easier to paint in. This step isn’t necessary to do though. Don’t worry if your lines aren’t perfect! You’ll be painting over them. And with this project, bring imperfect makes it look better.

Paint the Black Paint on the Cat Face

Using the black craft paint, paint in all of the face areas. Let dry. A second or third coat of paint my be needed.

Paint in the Cat Features

Using the orange paint, paint in the areas around the iris of the cat’s eyes and the inside of the ears. Paint one to two coats. After the outside area of the eyes are dry, paint in the pupils with bright green paint, and the nose and cheeks with light pink paint. When the cheeks and nose are dried, add a little swipe of white paint to add a highlight.

Then paint in the teeth with white paint, the Hat with yellow, red and orange (we mixed a little red and orange to give some extra color to the pom pom.). When dry add a highlight to the pom pom and the hat. Paint the ruffle under the cat’s chin with orange and green paint. Let the painted cat dry completely before moving onto the next step.

Use 3D Paint to Add Dimension

Use black dimensional paint to outline the mouth and add lines for teeth, around the ears to clean up any paint lines.

Let the black dimensional paint dry and use the yellow 3D paint around the eyes to add a highlight.

When the yellow paint is dry, use the white dimensional paint to add eyebrows and cat whiskers., dots on the ruffle collar and frayed lines on the pom pom.  Don’t hesitate to turn the bag as needed to make painting the details easier.

Once the paint is completely dry, the project is ready to display or use in another creative idea! We’ll be sharing how to turn this into a primitive pillow in another post. Make sure to grab the template below!

  Supplies You Will Need to Create a Spooky Changing Portrait

-A printer for the printables (ink jet or laser) or send the items to a print shop (printables below) printed as 8 x 11 images with a slight border

-3 sheets of vellum

-Clear tape

-2 photo mats 11 x14 with an 8×10 opening

-Double stick foam tape

-Gold craft paint

-Decoupage medium or white craft glue

-Scissors

-Brown stamp pad

Paint the Photo Mats

Paint the photo mats with gold paint and let dry (or customize with any color you prefer)..

Print the Images for Your Scary Face Changing Halloween Portrait

While the gold paint is drying, print out the 3 printables (just right click and save as an image on your computer) on the vellum and cut out the frame edges from the one sheet of vellum. If you don’t have a laser jet or ink jet printer, you can ask your local library or even UPS store to print them out for you. It’s important to make sure both images are printed at exactly the same size. We’ve designed them so they overlay in the right spots when printed the same size. If you don’t have vellum, you can use regular printer paper, the effect just won’t be as pronounced.

Apply the Vellum Frame Pieces

Once the images are printed, apply the vellum frame pieces to the edge of the top mat with white craft glue or decoupage  medium. This is going to give it that “fancy frame” vintage look. Once the medium is dry, to make the frame fancier, paint over the pieces lightly with the gold paint. Enough to cover the color of the vellum, but not enough to cover the details on the images and let dry.  Asdd some brown ink y rubbing and ink pad on the surface to add some age and patine. If you would rather have this be a little simpler, then you can leave the frame pieces off.  The mat can also be covered with other paint colors, scrapbook paper, or even stamps.

Add The Skull Image to the Bottom Mat

Take the printed out skeleton image and taping it to backside of  the mat, centering the skeleton image.

Line Up the Second Printed Image of the Woman

Apply a few strips of tape to the back of the portrait of the woman facing up, and lay it over the skeleton image, lining up the facial features (The easiest way to line it up is to hold it up to the light and make sure the hats match exactly.).

Place the second mat over the top of both images, lining it up with the  square edge of the bottom mat, and press down on top of the tape that is facing up on the top print. Before taping, hold it up to the light and make sure it’s lined up. If it’s in the right spot, once the tape is adhered, flip the mat and vellum over and press firmly to make sure it’s stuck and add additional tape.  This step is important to make sure the lady image pines up with the skull image and then that the top amt and bottom mat also line up so the effect works when illuminated. Add more tape to hold it in place, then remove the top mat.

Secure the Two Mats Together

On back of the top mat,  apply six strips of double stick tape. Once the tape is applied, press the two mats together, with the top of the skull mat applied to the bottom of the top lady portrait mat firmly.

Display Your Scary Changing Face Portrait!

These can be popped into a sturdier frame, or displayed as is. or in a photo stand. Add a battery operated candle (NOT a real one!) on a remote or twinkle lights behind it to illuminate the portrait for the skull to show through! A flickering battery operated candle makes it even spookier!
