I love working with air dry clay. It’s one of those things I can get my hands into and zone out for hours. I made a DIY clay bird and feather wall hanging out of clay to share with you. This project can be customized to create any kind of wall hanging or even Christmas ornaments no kiln needed! If you’re not so sure on your sculpting skills, don’t be afraid to use cookie cutters! You can use them to make so many clay ideas and creating should be fun and easy! We use Paperclay for this project and it’s a pretty awesome medium. It’s very mold-able and very forgiving, and dries really fast. I love making art dolls with it as well.

Supplies for Creating this Air Dry Clay Artwork

-Paperclay

-Template or cookie cutters (hint: cookie cutters and clay work well for classroom clay crafting too)

-Clay tools

-Wax or parchment paper

-Water

-Acrylic craft paint

-Grommets, twine and a stick

-Sealer such as Triple Thick by Decoart

-White craft glue

Roll Out Air Dry Clay and Trace Templates

Use a rolling pin or thick dowel to roll the clay out flat onto wax paper or parchment paper. To cut out the birds, I used an image from the Graphics Fairy as a template. I just traced around it, removed the excess clay, and patted down any rough edges on the sculpture. Paperclay takes about a day to dry before it’s ready for paint. I like working on wax paper when I clay play with it because it’s very easy to move it, or remove it off your surface. And it makes the clean up really easy.

Use Water to Smooth the Edges of the Clay

Use a small amount of water on tour fingers to smooth any of the edges. At this time also create a small hole in the top of the bird where you want it to hang and set it aside to dry fully. This may take a few days.

Sculpting Bird Feathers in Airy Dry Clay

Bird feathers can be easy to make our of clay using a few simple steps. To make the feathers, I start by making a “snake” and pressing it flat.

Then I took a clay tool (or use a flat edge of a popsicle stick) and press it into the clay down the center to create the center of the feather.

To make the feather sides, use a clay tool or flat wood stick to make angled lines by pressing and angling the edge upward. Smooth the edges of the clay, use a tool to create a hole and let the clay dry 24-48 hours.

Paint Clay Birds and Feathers with Acrylic Craft Paint

This is the fun part! Once the clay is completely dry, these can be painted in anyway to match your decor! We find adding a base coat color first to seal the clay, letting it dry and then painting the details works best. You can get fancy and decorate them however you like!

I got a little fancy with the feathers with some gold craft paint. Let you creativity run wild when painting. The best thing about acrylic paint is it can always be painted over. When painted, seal with a protective top coat such as a craft varnish, If you would like a more shiny, resin-like finish, use Decoart’s Triple Thick. Let dry.

Add the Grommets

I also added scrapbooking grommets to not only reinforce the hole, but add a fancy detail. When using these grommets, don’t use both sides how you would normally use them. Only use the fancy side and glue it in with white craft glue.

Once everything is dry, you are ready to hang. I used a branch form my yard, and embroidery floss. The floss had a more delicate feel than twine or string, but any of those will work. This is adult art, so make sure to keep this out of reach of small children, pets and heat or flame.

I picked a pale pink color and tied it with a modified blanket stitch to hang it on the branch.

I staggered the heights of the birds and feathers.

I also painted the birds a bit fancy too. I love all of the color and pattern.

It adds a nice pop of color against a white wall.

If you’ve never worked with Paperclay, it’s something to really get out and dig into.

Welcome to Part 2 of creating backyard bouquets! I wanted to share how I create beautiful organic-feeling flower arrangements. Growing and selling home grown bouquets is also very popular with flowers and plants from the yard and an easy micro business to start (always check your local ordinances.). These are some of the best flowers to plant for a cutting garden especially if you’re in the Midwest or somewhere that is not an arid setting for armfuls of blooms. Some are seasonal like a peony or tulip bulbs, but they are easy to grow and many can be cut over and over again. Who doesn’t love a beautiful bouquet of flowers that feels natural and not so formally arranged of locally grown flowers or purchased from a farm stand? It has such charm! Plus, it’s so much more sustainable than shipping flowers from thousands of miles away. Let’s start with the best flowers for bouquets that are homegrown and then look at some bouquet recipe examples for gorgeous and easy to put together arrangements!

The Best Flowers to Grow for Floral Arrangements and a Cut Flower Garden

Some of my favorite flowers (depending on the time of spring/early summer/late summer) that are yard-grown to arrange with are hydrangeas, zinnias, yarrow, butterfly bush, catmint, sage, sedum, calendula, cone flowers, lavender, coral bells, marigold, daisy, cone flower, larkspur. Many of these are hardy annuals that are low-maintenance, have strong stems for arranging, have a long vase life and can be cut over and over again. Even vegetables such as carrots (or radishes!) that are biennials can be let go to flower and those cut for arrangements! Many of these flower varieties don’t have a heavy scent either which can be good so they aren’t competing against one another (except for marigold. Use sparingly, they can stink.) Here is a handy chart that you can print out!

Easy to Grow Green Filler for Floral Arranging

And don’t forget about filler greenery! Many times, I’ll grab greenery in the yard for filler like ferns, lemon balm, oregano, asparagus fronds, coleus and hosta leaves (If it looks pretty, and safe to use, break the rules and use it!). Many times small branches of bushes and shrubs also make great filler such as serviceberry and wigeilas.

Flower Arrangement Recipes

I have the arrangements broken down into “flower bouquet recipes” for you, so you can pin them and save until you’re ready to use them for inspiration! For this first arrangement, I picked zinnias, daylilies, yarrow, and fern fronds. When using daylilies, make sure to pick ones with a few unopened buds so when the first buds wilt, the new ones will open.

Flower Bouquet Recipe 1

Flower Bouquet Recipe 2

For the second organic flower arrangement, I made a big, white hydrangea the main star and filled in around it.

I also added a Everblooming blue hydrangea, and a Limelight hydrangea tucked in the top, and a hosta flower stem is always good for height.

Flower Bouquet Recipe 3

The next bouquet had pink yarrow as the main feature.

I added some zinnias, ferns, and even a coleus for color. At the top, in the back of the arrangement, there’s a bit of my Dark Knight butterfly bush and lemon balm with yarrow for texture.

What I love about this arrangement below, is really hydrangea and yarrow are the star of this show. I bought this yarrow plant a few a years ago, and I am so in love with it!

It is called Cotton Candy yarrow, and blooms in various colors ranging from white to dark pink…all on one plant!

Flower Bouquet Recipe 4

The last arrangement is one that actually, if you forgot about it would be OK because many of these plants will throw roots and can be planted in the ground. Though it is important to change your water in your arrangement every few days to make sure there isn’t any bacteria build up.

This arrangement consists of coleus and sedum (which if you leave them in water long enough will grow roots) and you can put them in the ground. Out of all of them, this is definitely a longer lasting arrangement.

Flower Bouquet Recipe 5

Don’t underestimate the power of also using all one flower! There is nothing more gorgeous than a bowl or vase full of peonies, roses or zinnias!

Tips to Arranging Home Grown Flower Arrangements

-Add a few vibrant blooms as focus points and then build the bouquet around them

-Use green filler to add height

-Harvest the flowers with plenty of stem left for cutting to the appropriate height

-Vary heights of flowers and stems to add interest

-Change the water frequently to avoid bacteria build up and keep flowers fresher for longer.

I hope you’re inspired to head outside and snip a few stems and blossoms, or to plant a few flowers that you can add to your vases!

Paint in the Tulip Flower Head

Use the brush and the tan mixed watercolor paint to paint in the petals. This will be the tulip under-painting. Some of the color will show though and give the tulip flower dimension.

Blot the Watercolor Paint

While the paint is still wet, use a paper towel to blot up the paint near the top of the petals to create a mottled appearance.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="640" height="800" src="https://jenniferrizzo.com/wp-content/upload/2026/05/Blot-watercolor-tulip-with-a-paper-towel--640x800.jpg" alt="A hand uses a paper towel to blot a yellow watercolor tulip on white paper.
Dab the paint as each petal is painted and while it is still wet. Don’t paint each petal and then go back to dab each one, the paint will dry too fast.

One of my favorite things about late summer is how most of the plants and flowers in the yard are in full bloom. I love being able to grab a recycled jar, step outside of my door, and wander around the yard snipping flowers and branches here and there to make backyard bouquets. While I adore a good rose bunch as much as the next person, I really love the wildness of an arrangement of unconventional flowers, greenery and branches. I’d rather have someone give me fresh snipped zinnias from their front yard over grocery store flowers any day of the week! When I create arrangements, I’ll try all kinds of combinations such as a big, white hydrangea flower, hosta leaves, and birch tree branches. I even love cutting volunteer maple tree seedlings from my yard and using them when I can. The best part is that fresh cut flowers make a wonderful and thoughtful gift!

My mom is a floral designer, and I love how she uses her artistic eye to put flowers in a pretty arrangement. She has some mad skills, and I’ve learned a lot from her. I asked if she would lend us her expertise, and give some advice as to the best way to put together a backyard bouquet.

Some Expert Tips for Creating Backyard Floral Arrangements

-Pick the flowers early in the morning and put them immediately into a bucket of water

-Pull off any lower leaves that will sit below the waterline, or they will decay and ruin the water

-Use weeds such as Queen Ann’s Lace, and Hosta as easy fillers, and around edges

-Add things such as branches, pods and grasses for height

-Make sure to turn your arrangement as you work so you don’t have only one side that looks great.

One tip she told me a long time ago that I still use as I am building my arrangement, is to pretend I am adding my flowers in a bubble or mound shape. I put tall elements in the center, and work my way down to the base in height. Now I get more abstract–ish with my arrangement, but a good mound is an easy way make an arrangement that is symmetrical, and pleasing to the eye. We have a bloom bar in the store and studio with The Flower Chick Stacey and people always love building their own bouquets.

Save and Use Recycled Jars for Fresh Cut Flowers

New vases and containers can be expensive to use if you are frequently gifting homegrown bouquets of flowers, but saved, washed and recycled jars can be pretty and don’t need to be returned!

Decorated Recycled Cans

Tulips are pretty flowers to draw and can be sketched in a plain lead pencil, with colored pencils, or even in watercolor pencils for a pretty watercolor look. While there are many varieties of tulips such as those with a frilled petal, we’ll go step by step for drawing a basic tulip that can then be adapted to all other kinds of tulips with little changes. You can use this drawing guideline to modify the flower shape and variety.

Supplies for Drawing a Tulip

-Plain pencil, if using an art pencil, an HB hardness of pencil is recommended

-Eraser

-Drawing or mixed media paper

Draw the Flower Head First

I find it’s easier to start with drawing the main flower and then add the stem and leaves after. That way you can make the stems as long as needed. We’ll add a bulb bulb on the end, but you can also use this tutorial to add some tulips in a vase as well. If you love this tutorial, try painting a tulip in watercolor. This thing to know about tulip flower buds and head is that the petals overlap each other.

Start by drawing on large tear drop shape with the stop slightly rounded. This will be the front most petal.

Add the second petal. This will be drawn from a side angle and is curved to the outer edge and goes slightly under the front petal. For the third petal, create an arch behind the other two petals and connect them.

Add some smaller arches on the inside of the tulip center. This will be the inside smaller petals.

Draw the Tulip Stem

From the base of the flower bud, draw two lines next to each other and curve them slightly until you reach where the base of the flower ends.

Draw the Bulb

At the bottom of the stem add a larger tear drop with a fatter base. This will form the shape of the bulb. From the bottom of the bulb. When the tulip is done, use a very sharpened pencil tip to draw squiggly lines to mimic roots at the end and add shading.

Draw the Tulip Leaves

Tulip leaves are long leaves. They wrap around the base of the stem and start about half way up. Some leaves are thick and other varieties are thin. Draw them as a long triangle with a very pointy tip, the base of the leave covering the stem and coming up behind the stem. The less there are straight lines the better. Go in and erase any pencil lines on the stem from overlapping.

Add Shading to The Tulip Drawing

Shading with the pencil is where the tulip will gain some realism and dimension. If we consider the light is coming from the upper right hand corner. Along the main flower petal on the left edge where it meets the right edge of the other petal, use some light shading to create a shadow where they overlap.

Add shading with the pencil in the center where the mini petals over lap. Create a shadow where the bottom of the flower head meets the stem top. Add some light shading along the edges of the leaves and to the part of the leaves where they are behind the stem and any wavy areas that look like they might be in a shadow.

Darken Some of the Lines on the Edges of the Flower Petals and Leaves

Darkened lines can tell the eye what sits in front of something else. Use a softer , darker pencil, or slightly more pressure with the current pencil to add darker pencil lines.

Outline to the front petal, edge of the leaves that are closest to the front and the top edge of the bulb, as well as darkening a few roots to make them pop. All of this well add to give more dimension to the tulip drawing.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="640" height="800" src="https://jenniferrizzo.com/wp-content/upload/2026/05/Darken-lines-with-a-pencil-to-make-the-flwer-pop.jpg" alt="A close-up of a pencil sketch of a tulip in progress, with a yellow pencil touching the paper.

Add more shading as needed on the tulip.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="640" height="800" src="https://jenniferrizzo.com/wp-content/upload/2026/05/Add-outside-leaf-pencil-shading.jpg" alt="A hand uses a pencil to sketch leaves and a flower bud on white paper.

Finish Adding Details

Add details such as additional shading and imperfections to make it look more realistic. Don’t forget it’s in pencil and can be erased if it doesn’t look quite right!

This can also be drawn with watercolor pencil on watercolor or mixed media paper so a watercolor version can be painted. See how to paint the watercolor version here. The petal sizes and amounts can be changed to look different and the bulb can be left off as well. Feel free to print out this drawing below and use as a template!

HI everyone! I am joining in the spring printable tour with other amazing bloggers today.I get to share this spring printable and coloring page with you. I drew a sweet mini-bouquet of crocuses. They are the first flowers in our area that pop their noses through the frozen ground every spring and I love that crocuses come in pretty colors that really brighten up the beginning of spring. This was created so you can either just print and display in different versions below, or print it out on paper or cardstock to create a coloring page!

I get very excited when I see them come out of the ground. It can be a long, and damp winter here. There is something about when you see the very first flowers emerge, and then you sense the slightly warmer change in the breeze that feels so exciting. It’s like winter is finally broken and it’s actually going to be above 50 outside. I always know spring is approaching here when I see jr. high and high school boys walking in shorts to school. It’s normally when the temperature is over 40 degrees. I framed my print with some honeycomb scrap book paper, and I made a little vignette with some of the crocuses in my yard, and I added some moss and a butterfly. I like how the geometric shapes on the paper set off the organic quality of the flowers. I love decorating with natural and botanical accents. Every room looks better with flowers and fresh artwork.

I am lucky enough to have some pretty and purple ones that have naturalized in the grass. I’ve never actually planted any, so I must have gotten lucky to have a few squirrels or chipmunks plant them for me. We have lots of those around here. It’s a bit like a miniature wild kingdom. I made the printables in a few different color ways, that way you have your choice in which one you’d like to print. I also have the blank coloring sheet underneath so you can paint or decorate your own! Just right mouse click to save as an image and print out or send to your local printer.

I think Japanese beetles are the bane of many gardeners existence and it’s almost that season. The pests can quickly defoliate bushes and plants and not only make them ugly, but weaken them enough to kill them by eating most of their foliage. They were brought here around 1916 on cargo from Japan where they were kept in check by natural predators to New Jersey prior to plant quarantine. They love plants that are in the rose family such as roses and raspberries. Luckily, there are a few ways to control them and lessen their impact on your garden. Most people don’t realize that the larvae are actually the white grubs that are in the lawn. They spend that time underneath the turf eating the grass roots. Eventually they become adult beetles that emerge about late June /early July to cause significant damage to certain plants in landscaping. While controlling the grub population helps minimize Japanese beetle adults, they can still come over from the neighbors lawn or from miles around for their favorite leaves.

Japanese Beetles Grubs In The Lawn

Many people know these bugs in their larval stage as grubs in their lawn. Sometimes they can be seen when digging up the japanese beetle grubs in the dirt or by brown patches in the lawn as they eat the roots of grasses. While the best control early on is by treating your lawn with either insecticides or with a natural grub control such as BT (Bacillus Thuringiensis a beneficial nemaode). However, that’s not always possible. Especially if none of your neighbors are doing it. They might be gone in your yard, but there is noting that stops them from making a visit from next door and snacking on your plants. They really love anything in the Rose family (Hibiscus, Rose of Sharon, roses, raspberries), hops, some shrubs and trees like Lindens, grapes, some herbs like Basil and fruit trees such as plums.

This lacy looking raspberry leave is how Japanese beetle damage and how they skeletonize your foliage and weaken your plants with a lacy leaf appearance.

Do Commercial Japanese Beetle Traps Work?

One thing I can tell you from my own experience on a smalls scale is that a commercial traps can help control a beetle population, use with caution, it can also end up attracting more Japanese beetles as well, so use in combination with other control methods. However, if you are managing a large area such a acreage, these could be beneficial if they are placed far far away from the crops or plants you are trying to protect. For smaller gardens, hand-picking and planting a trap crop, or plants and herbs they don’t like may be just as helpful.

What is a Trap Crop for Beetles?

A trap crop is a plant species that the bugs love more than the plants you are trying to protect so they eat that instead. One thing I found quite by accident is one thing that Japanese Beetles love more than my Raspberries or Roses are Evening Primrose. Evening Primrose is a super common wild flower and it grows in a large part of the United States. It has very pretty yellow flowers. Butterflies, bees and birds also love it, and it readily self sows, so just pull the seedlings in the spring for control, and leave a few plants. Here in zone 6A is grows between 3 and 5 feet tall and I normally let it come up about 10 feet from the plants in question. While the beetles don’t completely leave my other plants alone, it minimizes the damage they cause. In the Fall, let them go to seed, and either pull the tall plants after the first frost, or leave them for the birds until Spring.

And the Japanese Beetles LOVE it which makes for very easy picking, and they mostly leave my other plants alone.

What Plants Repel Japanese Beetle Adults?

Strong scented flowers such as chrysanthemum, geranium, marigolds, petunias, begonias and herbs like chives, garlic can be inter-planted among your susceptible plants to help repel the bugs.

What Is The Best Manual Form Of Control For Japanese Beetles?

For smaller plants and vegetables like beans, row covers can be effective as a manual barrier. Hand-picking and into a bucket or container of soapy water is the next best form of control, even if you don’t have a trap crop. Since Japanese beetles males and females also emerge with the urge to mate, you will often times get two or more at a time. They aren’t very picky when it comes to that aspect of their life. According to Backyardchickens. com, if you have chickens, letting them roam in the garden and snack maybe be good control as well.

Normally a quick shake of the leaf into a mixture of water and dish soap takes care of the problem. About two tablespoons of dish soap to a cup of water is plenty to send them to a watery grave. This does need to be done daily for most of the summer after they emerge.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone wp-image-13036 size-full" src="https://jenniferrizzo.com/wp-content/upload/2016/07/Japanese-beetle-on-evening-primrose-trop-crop.jpg" alt="Close-up of Japanese beetles on a green plant with yellow flowers.
Japanese Beetle Resistant Plants

If they are hard to control and a huge issue, resistant variety of plants can be planted in the landscape. Magnolia, Boxwood, Lantana, Pines, and some of the flowers mentioned earlier that are supposed to repel them.

I have found that by using these tips, it is very easy to pop in my garden every few days in the early morning, and do a quick sweep with my soapy bucket. This has helped keep my plants fairly clear of Japanese Beetles and lessened the damage on my plants. For even more information than what we have covered here, this Wikipedia article on Japanese Beetles really takes a deep dive.

Monoprinting or using a gel plate to make art and image transfers is a medium of art that anyone can try. Gel plate art can allow you to create beautiful and interesting one of a kind art prints. It’s maker-friendly because it doesn’t require specific art skills, just understanding the process and technique. In fact, this is also a very kid-friendly project! One of the popular ways to create art with it is to create gel plate magazine image transfers…which can be both and amazing, fun and frustrating. They require a knowledge for the process and a little bit of patience as they don’t always turn out! Let’s start with the basics of gel plate printing.

What is a Gel Plate?

A gel plate is a synthetic plate made of mineral oil and polymer. It’s pliable and flexible and can be used to make one of a kind art prints. While homemade gel plates can be used, commercially made ones are much more durable (Some brands of commercial gel plates are Gelli plate and Speedball plate.).

Are There Any Rules with a Gel Plate?

While a wide range of mixed media materials can be used on a gel plate, one of the biggest no-no’s is making sure to not use anything sharp as it will damage the plate and while a hair dryer on low can be used, heat guns will ruin a plate. There are so many other things you can use including faux plants to create all kinds of art such as these faux gel plate sun prints.

What Are Materials Can be used on a Gel Plate for Monoprinting?

While medium or heavy body acrylic paint is the most common art medium, acrylic markers, pastels, and more can be used on a gel plate to create art. Items to create texture can include lace, bubble wrap, fabric, burlap, cardboard, stencils, stamps, magazine pages and more.

How to Create a Magazine Image Transfer onto a Gel Plate

Materials need to create an image transfer are:

– A fashion magazine or similar publication. They should be glossy pages with high contrast. A high contrast laser jet image can also be used.

-Medium/heavy body acrylic paint or fluid art acrylics. Craft paints don’t work. The paints need to have a long enough open working time and craft paint dries too quicky.

-Brayer or roller

-Sheets of thicker paper or matte cardstock at least 65 pound weight paper.

-Gel plate

Use the Brayer to Spread the Paint onto the Gel Plate

Add about 3 small drops the size of peas onto the 8 X 10 gel plate. The paint amount will change depending on the size of the plate. Use the brayer to roll the paint out onto the plate. Spread it until it just covers the plate and has a “crispy slightly matte look”. If the brayer slides around or the paint looks too wet, there is too much paint and it won’t be a good, detailed transfer.

Apply the Magazine Page Face Down

Once the paint is ready, place the magazine page face down onto the page and rub over the back of the magazine with a medium pressure. Too much pressure will remove the detail and too light will not have enough contact.

Add Painted Embellishments to Image Transfer

Once the image has dried, additional painting can be done over the top. Images and texture can be added with all kinds of things, or items can also be hand painted on.

Let each layer dry. The biggest thing to remember is anything added is being painted in reverse, so only items to the front will be seen ao make sure details go down first. Let dry.

Try Other Ways to Add Texture Such as Stencils

Stencils and a foam brush and paint can be used to add texture over the entire piece or just in select areas. Let paint dry before adding a new layer.

Lift the Image with Paint

Apply paint of choice to the back of the painted gel plate. Use the brayer to spread it evenly all over the back of the image until there is complete coverage.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="571" height="800" src="https://jenniferrizzo.com/wp-content/upload/2026/04/Painting-on-the-reverse-of-a-gel-plate-image-transfer-571x800.jpg" alt="A hand uses a brayer to apply white paint onto an abstract portrait painting with a colorful background.

While it’s still wet, apply a sheet of card stock over the top. Place another sheet of paper over the top of that sheet (a roller sheet). This will do two things. One it will protect the back of the paper from left over paint on the roller, and two, remove excess paint on the roller.

Roll the brayer firmly over the entire paper so contact is made between the card stock and paint on the gel plate. Let sit and dry at least 10 minutes. It will take longer for thicker paint and can take up to 24 hours with really thick paint.

Pull the Paper Off of the Gel Plate

I prefer to remove the paper from the plate so it puts less stress on the plate. Gently lift and edge and make sure the paper is removing cleanly from the plate. If it is, pull it up and back until it’s a part. If it’s still wet, press it back down and wait a little longer.

Why Didn’t My Image Transfer Work?

No image just paint: Too much paint or too much pressure

Image not detailed: Not enough pressure.Try for medium firm pressure.

No Image left on plate: Paint dried and waited too long or not enough pressure, or image was not high enough contrast. Make sure to use a glossy print with toner.

Frame Your Art!

At this point you have a unique, one of a kind gel plate monoprint to enjoy! You can make all kinds of art, and be really creative with layering, color and textures! Some people have multiple gel plates so they don’t need to wait for dry time!

It’s planting season! I love using unconventional items to create planters! One item I love to use is old dresser drawers, Especially those that are rough for the wear and no longer have matching furniture to go along with them! There are a few ways you can use a dresser drawer to upcycle and create an Old Dresser Drawer Flower Planter Box!

Creating an Indoor Drawer Planter

This project is for a planter that will be outside and not in the house. For a cute inside drawer planter, paint the inside of the drawer and outside and let dry, add plastic saucers under each pot, and remove each plant when watering so the drawer stays dry to prevent rot.

Prepare the Dresser Drawer for an Outside Planter Add Drainage Holes

To make a repurposed dresser drawer into a planter, start by prepping your drawer. If you are going to plant directly in the drawer, several holes need to be drilled in the bottom so the water could drain. Keep in mind planting directly in the drawer means it’s only going to last a season (or two) at the most. If drainage holes aren’t drilled, the water will just sit and after a couple of rains the drawer will just fall a part.

Paint the Dresser Drawer Inside and Outside

After the drainage holes are drilled, paint the entire drawer your choice of color, inside and outside using an exterior paint. This will help it last a little longer, especially if it’s under and area that’s covered like a front porch. I picked a bright red paint color for a pop of color in the garden, but you can use any color you like! You can also add new screw holes for a new handle or pull at this time too.

Seal the Painted Dresser Drawer Planter

Sealing the drawer with an outdoor varnish will help as well. Because the inside is being painted with varnish and paint, I only recommend this for ornamental flowers only , and not for any food plants that would grow veggies, herbs or food plants. A stock tank planter is a great container for that!

Add Soil and Plant!

Once the paint is dry, it’s time to plant (also adding a rectangle planting liner will help the weathering process.) all of your plants! Add a moisture control potting soil to the planter and plant pretty flowers! I wanted early season blooms, so I planted pansies in my drawer. Not much flowers so early in the season around here, so they are always a welcome bit of color!

An upcycled planter like this is such a cute way to welcome in spring! It’s also about the time I make my marigold pre-mix for planting and get those going.

Forsythia is one of those flowers that I really underappreciated for a very long time. For years I’ve viewed them is merely a landscape plant that people pop in to get a little spring color before everything else comes up. I really thought they were a little bit unassuming. This year for some odd reason they really caught my attention, and I’ve even worked on forcing blooming a few branches in my house with great success; they are so easy to force bloom! Now after the long winter, especially this year, I really appreciate the hope that they bring with their blooming and knowing that this winter is almost over and we are past some of the worst times. I wanted to share with you a paint tutorial of how to paint a forsythia branch, because it’s much easier than you would think….You only actually need one 2 brushes, a little water, and a few colors. There is a video tutorial , or you can skip to the step by step below. If you don’t want to paint your own forsythia still life, you can grab the free printable at the end.

Paint the Canvas with Paint and Water

To create watery background finish by floating your acrylic paint in a water base. Simply dab your canvas with a bunch of water with a large brush, and then take a little bit of the blue gray paint and dab on top.

The paint will melt into the water, and create a flowy-looking pattern. You can even use your brush to move around a little bit to accent the pattern. If you want to make it look drippy while there still water, tip the canvas up so it runs down to a paper towel on the end, this will give a water running affect. Let your canvas dry. This could take up to an hour or you can use a blow dryer on it on the low setting. Did you know you can paint abstract art with a blow dryer?

Paint the Forsythia Branch with Under Painting

To paint the forsythia branch start by using the burnt umber and a skinny brush, and draw a squiggly line. Use the tip of the brush to make it thinner near the top of the branch and thicker near the base like a branch will naturally grow. After that, add some little side branches using burnt umber.

Create some little flower petals by making a little swoops with your brush of the burnt umber. The yellow ochre will go over the burnt umber.

Add Yellow to Paint the Flowers

Use your tip of your brush to start the tip of the pedal and then work in quickly to create a very loose petal pattern. You can also use this to create little buds along the way by dabbing your thin brush with yellow ochre paint briefly to the canvas.

Accent the Flowers with Bright Yellow

Paint the bright yellow over the yellow ochre. This will brighten up the petals and it actually looks better if it’s not perfectly over the top of the previous strokes. It’s ok to do this slightly wet so the colors blend a little. Make sure not to overwork the paint to become muddy.

Accent the Forsythia Flowers

Use titanium white to accent the flower petals on the ends to create a highlight. A little sap green can be added where it touches the branch if desired for a green accent.

That’s it! That’s how easy it is to create the look of forsythia flowers on a canvas. They’re so easy to paint and they’re so cheerful. If you feel like they are still a little bit dark, go over your old strokes with bright yellow paint and white and it will brighten it up instantly!

This is such a fun way to also bring forsythia blooms in your house if you don’t happen to have any branches that you can clip from nearby!
