Republicans will vote for any Republican regardless of moral character or competence. There are no lines they won't cross if what's at stake is the next election. Herschel Walker has no more business being a United States senator than a twelve year old in terms of ability and knowledge. Georgia's election shouldn't even be close. If you're a Republican, wouldn't this be a good way to clean up the party's leadership by telling them you can't take our vote for granted, you must give us quality candidates to vote for or we're staying home. Walker is Trump 2.0.

Jene interviews two former Kentucky inmates he met while volunteer teaching at a Kentucky correctional facility.  Tom Payne is a 7"2 former NBA basketball player with the Atlanta Hawks. He was the first African-American recruited by the University of Kentucky and hall of fame coach Adolph Rupp. Incarcerated for 33 years he talks about trying to help others avoid the pitfalls and violence he committed against others. Darryll Davis is a former drug dealer who committed murder after a drug deal gone wrong. He spent 22 years in prison and has a similar mission of preventing at-risk youth becoming violent offenders and helping inmates better themselves, feeling redemption, and coming to terms with the effects of their actions. The two talk about their time in prison, their backstories and the work they are doing now.

Republican Laws Are a Win-Win For Everyone; Except Women

The "arm our teachers" movement just got worse. Supposedly moderate Republican Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine is signing House Bill 99 into law today that changes training time for teachers to possess firearms at school from 700 hours to a mere 24 hours, and all this after a team of highly trained and armed officers hid in a hallway fearing an AR15 shooter in a Texas school. When will this illogical madness stop? Other red states are likely to follow until teachers begin to be riddled in school hallways.

The Russian population will eventually turn on him when the Ukraine war is over. Putin's censoring all news, so most Russians don't yet know that his assault is killing thousands and displacing millions. If a news member calls it a war they will get a fifteen year prison sentence. Is there a connection about Florida's recent bill prohibiting schools and workplace training programs from discussing racism, white supremacy, or priviledge. Instructors aren't allowed to say anything that might make people feel badly, because their race treated another race prejudicially. Both instances are covering up cases of injustice.

To prepare for the possibility of Jerry and his team launching an assault on Georgia's Springer Mountain (surely named for TV celebrity Jerry Springer) to plant the Springer family flag with its historic crest, Jene made actual phone calls to a librarian in Cherokee County Georgia, the media relations department of the State of Georgia and the headquarters of Georgia Search and Rescue. What he learned was beyond interesting. You will be shocked to learn why Jerry has doubts about this project.

Ukraine gave up 1800 nuclear missiles in the Budapest Memoranda where Russia, U.S. & Great Britain promised to keep Ukraine safe. Diplomacy took a hit when Trump tore up the Nuclear arms deal with Iran. He also withdrew from the Intermediate Forces Treaty with Russia. He pulled out of the Paris Climate Agreement. All while blasting NATO and the U.N. in the process making our word meaningless on the world stage. Where does all this end if treatise and negotiated agreements have no more worth than the paper they're written on? 

Then Jene blames Jerry for his now being on every Republican candidate list in America. But is America actually better when people vote and donate across party lines?

No surprise here. Springer moved to Cincinnati in 1968 to work at a law firm. He served on city council and became mayor at age 33. After one term he became a local news commentator and anchor for eleven years. Enter The Jerry Springer Show. The show began in Cincinnati before moving to Chicago. At first it was considered a replacement for Phil Donohue, until it found a new demographic in college age kids. Who as it turns out have a penchant for relationship drama.

Jerry talks about why it's rightfully important for Biden to fill the Supreme Court seat with an African-American woman. Stating, "No one else can share insights into the same experiences that they have had to go through".

How Do We Get Out Of the Racial Divide In America?

If we insist that starting in the first grade, students get accurate American history about what slavery did, then maybe they'll be more open to change the policies, change the laws, change the behavior.

Schools without African-Americans are doing their students a disservice. If kids are together everyday, race is not an issue.

Younger people value and seek diversity. Culture is the way that it's changing. Music and sports stars are who we try to be like and admire.

After the New York city council removed Thomas Jefferson's statue, should Jefferson's statue also be removed from Mt. Rushmore? While Jefferson famously wrote "All men are created equal", he acted like a white supremacist in his treatment of people of color, his own slaves and the indigenous people of this country.

The podcast reacts to the narrow question of whether Thomas Jefferson’s warts, namely the one where he owned over 600 slaves during his life, only freed at his death what most historians believe were his own children created by his ongoing sex, maybe against her will, with his slave Sally Hemings. Stated publicly that black people were inferior to whites whose freedom could only work by sending them away from America (colonization not emancipation), who called Native Americans 'wretches unable to govern' and whether those character flaws when measured against his creative crafting of a new country based on a foundation of the statement “all men are created equal?”

By comparison, is the institution of American slavery a moral equivalent to the Jewish Holocaust? If yes, are there, or should there be, statues erected to Hitler or SS officers if history can show they did great things for their society but sent 6 million Jews to their deaths? Or if a Catholic priest who is honored by Catholics for his work is discovered to have abused children, would that reverence change? In other words, are some behaviors deal breakers for future adulation by societies?

This episode is predicated on the premise that listeners will like listening to a full conversation about a thorny current issue that may be rooted in former limited understandings of our history.

1. To Save and/or restore Democracy in America we have to make sure Trump is not elected in 2024.

2. To make sure he's not, we have to win in 2022 to make sure we don't have a Republican Congress and Senate to pave the way for him.

3. To make sure we win in 2022 with no Trump on the ballot to vote against, we have to do something to bring Democrats to the polls in this Mid-term election.

4. That can only happen if we deliver on what we promised. To demonstrate that when Democrats win and have power, it can make a positive difference in their everyday lives.

5. All this will only happen if the Progressives are willing to compromise on the price tag. If they don't, the price will be the loss of our Democracy. A price none of us can afford.

Jene will introduce Hadar (pronounced Hah-DAR) Harris, who is the executive director of the Student Press Law Center, which is in the news lately for their support of a high school journalism teacher and her student whose school yearbook page was pulled from the book before it was distributed because it had a Roaring Twenties theme mentioning events from the past year like George Floyd's murder, Trump's loss, his denial Jan. 6 and Covid 19. The small Bigelow High School from Arkansas' East End School District thought they could censor the yearbook and ended up having the content discussed and reprinted throughout the country. Jerry returns to the podcast although he's still busy working on Judge Jerry episodes until the first week of September. There are now three major social media networks that disseminate most of the news people get their information from. A lot of that is misinformation and voters are casting their votes based on that disinformation. These social media companies need to be accountable for the information they allow on their websites. Their decision to ban Trump was the right one.

Simone Biles has received a lot of flack for her decision to drop out of Olympic events. Her mental health and performance anxiety were cited as the reason. Why it it so unfair for critics to call her weak when they are eating chips on the couch. Including Jerry's friend Piers Morgan. Jerry talks about his own stage fright on the Broadway play Chicago.

They met an African-American woman from New York who is biking across America looking for her new home when she finds the right place. 

There's been quite a few Trump signs alongside Confederate flags which is a contrast to the Be Kind signs.  The generosity of small towns has been really amazing! Why are people inclined to be so helpful? Jene wonders if it may be something called Emerson's theory of the oversoul, which posits we are all one soul and all interconnected.

Jene is now in the Grand Teton National Forest and has biked nearly 600 miles. 

Cross country bikers are an interesting lot. Jene talks about a few he's met, including one who crossed the U.S. from the East to West Coast in 17 days. The guys have landed a rental vehicle to get them back home and are plotting a route to get them back to Kentucky. 

Also, more details on the events of the female biker who was killed by a Grizzly last week. 

Lastly, Jene has realized an even more brilliant plan for breaking the Guinness Book of World Records by implementing his rental car unlimited miles scheme one more time.

This is the first of a five part series where Jene talks about his experience biking from Canada to Mexico. He's traveling 60 miles per day through rugged terrain. Then camping out at mostly primitive campsites. Before even beginning the trip his bike was damaged en route to Montana via Amtrek. There's been a couple of harrowing Semi-trucks blasting their horns while Jene and his friend hug their bikes as closely as possible to the shoulder of the road.

Since Megan, Jerry and I worked with Southern Ohio broadcasting legend Pat Barry, we say a few words about his sad passing last week of Covid 19, another example of the reach of the pandemic into our lives. On May 4, 1961, a group of 13 African-American and white civil rights activists launched the Freedom Rides, a series of bus trips through the American South to protest segregation in interstate bus terminals. The Freedom Riders, who were recruited by the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE), a U.S. civil rights group, departed from Washington, D.C., and attempted to integrate facilities at bus terminals along the way into the Deep South. African-American Freedom Riders tried to use “whites-only” restrooms and lunch counters, and vice versa. The group encountered tremendous violence from white protestors along the route, but also drew international attention to their cause. Over the next few months, several hundred Freedom Riders engaged in similar actions. In September 1961, the Interstate Commerce Commission issued regulations prohibiting segregation in bus and train stations nationwide.

Dr. David Fankhauser, 73, a professor at the University of Cincinnati, the Clermont Branch, was part of the second wave of mostly college students who traveled south as a Freedom Rider. He was a student at Central State College in Wilberforce, Ohio, an historically black college. He and another white Central State student flew on May 24, 1961, answering the call from revered student organizer Diane Nash for fresh troops, to Montgomery Alabama, and stayed at Rev. Ralph Abernathy’s home where they and other Riders strategized for several days with him, MLK and Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth. They decided that now the Riders must be willing to fill up southern jails for the maximum stay of 40 days before bailing out. David was arrested in Jackson, Mississippi, for sitting in a “colored” waiting room while riding a Trailways bus bound for New Orleans. He spent the next 42 days first in the Jackson City Jail and later the notorious Mississippi Parchman Penitentiary, 140 miles from Jackson in the Mississippi Delta.

The Freedom Riders in his cell block, including now Congressman John Lewis, hunger struck for nearly two weeks and sung freedom songs incessantly to hold their spirits, and the guards retaliated by leaving them only their underwear and taking their toothbrushes, mattresses, even the screens from the windows. 

When released on July 9, David rode a train back to Cincinnati’s Union Terminal where he was hoisted on the shoulders of local civil rights activists and carried through the building in a hero’s welcome.

Jene asks: Is protesting seeing a 1960s level comeback as a force for change? For years, I've been hearing young people say to me "Man, I wish I'd lived during the 60s like you did when huge changes were being made almost daily, usually driven by expressions made in the streets." Well, that feeling is alive today. These street protests, which are still continuing, have true power. 

Jerry points out that while these protests are similar to the 1960s, those protests started because of the draft for the Vietnam war. These protests today are based on the country we want to be.

Since he was mayor of a major city, we'll pick Jerry's brain about the challenges mayors face today balancing a city's need for police protection in normal daily life and the current climate where some are literally calling for defunding or even disbanding law enforcement as we know it.

That'll lead to Jene suggesting to Jerry that he let Jessica guide us on the final 30-mile section of the Continental Divide Trail in Montana's Glacier National Park that she had to bypass due to whiteout snow conditions. We'll claim that this is Jerry's chance to experience safely what can't be seen from a car window and have a backcountry blast in the process.  

Then Jene will ask Jerry to comment on what we're learning from this pandemic of COVID-19.
