La formulación Seger es una herramienta utilizada en la cerámica y la ciencia de materiales para calcular la proporción de óxidos en una receta de esmalte o masa cerámica. Fue desarrollada por el ceramista alemán Hermann Seger a finales del siglo XIX y se utiliza principalmente para obtener una mezcla de óxidos que permita controlar las propiedades de los esmaltes cerámicos, como el punto de fusión, la durabilidad y el acabado.

La formulación Seger es una forma de representar la receta de un esmalte mediante las relaciones molares de los óxidos que lo componen, como el sílice (SiO₂), la alúmina (Al₂O₃) y los fluxes (por ejemplo, el carbonato de sodio o de potasio). La idea es establecer una proporción adecuada entre estos componentes para obtener el resultado deseado en cuanto a la textura, color y comportamiento del esmalte.

Cómo funciona la formulación Seger:

Descomposición de los materiales: Los ingredientes del esmalte se descomponen en sus óxidos constituyentes. Por ejemplo, el silicato de aluminio se descompone en Al₂O₃ (alúmina) y SiO₂ (sílice).
Cálculo de las proporciones molares: Se calculan las proporciones molares de cada óxido en la mezcla.
Ajuste para la correcta fusión: A partir de estas proporciones, el ceramista puede ajustar la fórmula para lograr un esmalte con el comportamiento deseado, como un buen punto de fusión o la consistencia adecuada para el trabajo de esmalte en la cerámica.

Ejemplo de fórmula Seger:

Una fórmula Seger típica para un esmalte podría ser algo como:

6 SiO₂
2 Al₂O₃
4 CaO (óxido de calcio)
1 K₂O (óxido de potasio)

Esta fórmula está representando los óxidos que se usan en la mezcla y sus proporciones, lo que permite controlar el tipo de esmalte y sus propiedades, como el brillo o la resistencia.

La formulación Seger sigue siendo una herramienta muy útil en el diseño de esmaltes cerámicos y permite a los ceramistas crear recetas más precisas y reproducibles.

Yo no uso nunca la formulación SEGER.

Una receta de ejemplo:

Galaxy Glaze (cono 11-12) oxidación
	Fusion Frit F644	470
	Óxido de Zinc	245
	CMC	10
	Dióxido de Titanio	10
	Cuarzo	250

Añadir:	Óxido de cobre	80
	Carbonato de cobalto	8

Las desventajas de utilizar la fórmula Seger en esmaltes de cristalización de zinc, especialmente cuando se requiere ajustar las cantidades de cuarzo (SiO₂), radican en su enfoque rígido basado en proporciones molares de óxidos. Aquí se detallan los principales inconvenientes:

1. Falta de flexibilidad para ajustes específicos

La fórmula Seger representa los componentes del esmalte en términos de óxidos (SiO₂, ZnO, etc.) en proporciones molares. Si se modifica el cuarzo, se altera el equilibrio de toda la fórmula, lo que obliga a recalcular todos los materiales para mantener las proporciones de óxidos.
Esto dificulta ajustar únicamente el SiO₂ sin afectar otros componentes, algo común en esmaltes de cristalización donde el cuarzo es crítico para la viscosidad del fundente y la formación de cristales.

2. Alteración involuntaria de propiedades clave

En esmaltes de zinc, el equilibrio entre SiO₂, y ZnO es esencial para controlar:

Cristalización: Un exceso o déficit de SiO₂ puede inhibir el crecimiento de cristales de willemita (Zn₂SiO₄).
Viscosidad: Cambiar el cuarzo afecta la fluidez del esmalte durante la fusión, alterando la nucleación y crecimiento de cristales.

Al ajustar la fórmula Seger, otros óxidos ( o fundentes) también se modifican, lo que puede desestabilizar propiedades como la expansión térmica o la adhesión al soporte.

3. Complejidad en la práctica

La mayoría de las recetas se trabajan con materiales crudos (feldespatos, caolines, óxidos) y no con óxidos puros. Recalcular todas las materias primas para mantener la fórmula Seger tras un ajuste de cuarzo implica:

Revisar las contribuciones de cada material a los óxidos.
Rebalancear proporciones manualmente, lo que es laborioso y propenso a errores.

Esto contrasta con un enfoque empírico, donde ajustar cuarzo solo implica modificar su porcentaje en la receta sin alterar el resto.

4. Incompatibilidad con aditivos o impurezas

Los esmaltes de cristalización suelen incluir aditivos (como TiO₂ o CoO) para promover cristales o colores. La fórmula Seger no considera fácilmente estos elementos minoritarios, lo que limita su utilidad en recetas complejas.

5. Pérdida de control artesanal

Los ceramistas suelen trabajar con ajustes intuitivos basados en experiencia. La rigidez de la fórmula Seger puede restar flexibilidad creativa, especialmente cuando se buscan efectos no estandarizados (p. ej., texturas o patrones de cristalización únicos).

La fórmula Seger es útil para estandarizar esmaltes, pero en cristalizaciones de zinc —donde pequeños cambios en el cuarzo ( pero no únicamente en el cuarzo) son críticos— su estructura molar puede ser contraproducente. Se recomienda complementar con un enfoque práctico, ajustando directamente el SiO₂ o Zinc en la receta y verificando resultados mediante pruebas de cocción, sin depender exclusivamente del balance teórico de óxidos.

The Seger Formula is a mathematical expression used in ceramics and materials science to calculate the proportions of different oxide compounds in a glaze or ceramic body. It was developed by Herman Seger, a German ceramicist, in the late 19th century.

The formula provides a way to calculate the molecular ratio of various oxides (such as silica, alumina, and fluxes) in a glaze recipe. This is important because the ratio of these oxides can affect the properties of the glaze, including its melt point, hardness, and finish.

A typical Seger formula is expressed as a list of oxides, each represented by its molecular ratio (e.g., 5 SiO₂, 3 Al₂O₃, etc.), and is used to adjust glaze compositions to get specific effects.

The Seger Formula is typically used in the following way:

Divide the components of the glaze into their individual oxides.
Calculate the molecular ratio of each oxide.
Balance the ratio to achieve a glaze with desired properties, such as durability or a particular color.

This formula is still used today by ceramicists and materials scientists to design glazes and ceramic materials with specific characteristics.

Disadvantages of using Seger formulas in zinc crystalline glazes, specifically because adjusting quartz amounts would require changing all other materials. Let me start by recalling what Seger formulas are. They're a way to represent glaze compositions in terms of oxides, right? So, they help standardize recipes by using a molar basis.

But when you need to adjust quartz in a recipe, using Seger formulas ends up changing all the other materials. Why is that? Well, because Seger formulas are based on the molar ratios of oxides. If you increase quartz (which is SiO2), you're adding more SiO2 to the formula.

Since the formula maintains the ratios of other oxides relative to each other, increasing SiO2 would mean you have to adjust the amounts of the other materials to keep those ratios consistent. That makes sense. So, changing one component affects all others, which can be a hassle if you only want to tweak one ingredient.

Another point to consider is that crystalline glazes, especially zinc ones, are sensitive to the SiO2 levels. The crystal formation depends on the melt viscosity and cooling rates, which are influenced by these oxides. If adjusting quartz disrupts the balance, it might affect the crystal growth. So, using Seger formulas here might not be ideal because they force a proportional change in all components when you adjust one.

Also, practical application vs theoretical formulation. In the studio, a ceramist might just want to add a bit more quartz or zinc without recalculating the entire recipe. But with Seger, they can't do that easily. They have to adjust everything else to maintain the oxide ratios. That could be time-consuming and error-prone, especially for those not deeply familiar with the formulas.

In this workshop I will help you understand the process and technical issues so that you can start to have more success.
Some specific topics will include:
• Theory of crystallizations: How are they formed and at what temperatures
• Explanation of the different Frits: How they work and which are the best for crystalline glazes
• Oxidation firing schedules
• Catching excess running glaze by applying alumina to catchers
• Removing pieces from the kiln, separating them from the catcher and finishing them
• Tips and points to keep in mind to get the best results
• Typical errors and how to avoid them
and, of course, I will share many of my recipes such as Galaxy glazes and information about post reduction firings and using acids.

This workshop touches the argument of throwing with very specific techniques and the making and application of crystalline glazes. Participants will learn how to make suitable forms to enhance the magic of crystalline glazes and furthermore learn what to consider in formulating such glazes.

Techniques taught

In the workshop we will address form and surface. Firstly, by dedicating time to making double walled vessels and forms with long necks that will be thrown in two parts. Secondly, studying texture techniques for a variety of finishing on pieces. The last 4 days consist in a practical part with the formulation and application of some basic glazes, to continue with a technical part to understand the process. The magic of crystalline glazes will be unveiled through glaze formulation, frits best suited for cristals, the theory of crystallization, temperatures, application and firing methods. Equally, reduction and post-reduction treatments with acids and the formulation for red backgrounds will be discussed in depth. With tips and tricks out of his vast experience José Mariscal will help participants to avoid typical errors, thus creating the foundation for successful exploriation of the process in the future.

Logistics

On every classday, a delicious meal will be served. Lodging is included as well. The workshop is suitable for students with at least some throwing experience and will be taught in english.

En este curso trataremos las cristalizaciones en Oxidación. Habrá demostraciones en vivo y también compartiré con vosotros muchas recetas, curvas y trucos.

With many of recipes for some of my most popular crystalline glazes, this workshop will provide extra information to ceramists who want to master this complex aspect of crystalline glazes.

I personally tested many of the recipes, and carefully reviews every one. I would like to talk about the COLOR CHART. Which color will go to the crystal? which one in the background? will it change with acids? and with post reduction firings?

In this workshop I want to try to answer these questions with lots of glazes as an example. I also want to talk more about some glazes where the application is very different than I usual do and plays a very important role in the end result.
