Update of Author Guidelines and Submission Template

The Journal of Technology and Science Education (JOTSE) is pleased to announce several updates to its author guidelines and manuscript preparation requirements. These changes aim to improve transparency, align the journal with current international academic standards, and facilitate consistency in manuscript submission and publication.

Updated Manuscript Template

A new manuscript template has been introduced and must be used for all new submissions. Authors are required to prepare their manuscripts using this updated template before submitting their articles to the journal. The template standardizes the structure of the manuscript and provides detailed guidance on formatting sections, headings, tables, figures, equations, and references.

Adoption of APA 7th Edition Referencing Style

JIEM has adopted the APA 7th edition (American Psychological Association) citation and referencing style, replacing the previously used APA 5th edition. Authors must ensure that both in-text citations and reference lists comply with the APA 7 guidelines.

The updated template includes practical guidance and examples covering:

In-text citations for one, two, and multiple authors
Use of et al. from the first citation for works with three or more authors
Formatting of direct quotations and block quotations
Citation of works without authors
Multiple works cited together and works by the same author in the same year
Formatting of reference lists with alphabetical order and hanging indentation

The template also provides examples for a wide range of reference types, including:

Journal articles (with and without DOI)
Books and book chapters
Conference papers
Doctoral dissertations
Organizational reports
Datasets and preprints
Webpages and social media posts
Videos, podcasts, and government documents

In accordance with APA 7 recommendations, DOIs must be presented as active URLs (https://doi.org/...), and the reference list may include up to 20 authors before using an ellipsis.

New Mandatory Transparency Statements

To strengthen research transparency and integrity, several new sections must now be included at the end of all manuscripts:

Authors’ Contributions
For articles with multiple authors, the specific contribution of each author must be indicated using standardized contribution roles based on the CRediT taxonomy.

Data Availability Statement
Authors must specify the availability of the data supporting the findings of the study. The template provides several options, including public repository availability, inclusion within the article or supplementary materials, availability upon request, or restrictions due to ethical or legal reasons.

Use of Artificial Intelligence

Authors must indicate whether or not they have used AI, in accordance with the journal's guidelines. Therefore, they must indicate one of the two options in the article itself.

The authors declare that the content of the article has not been developed using Artificial Intelligence. They specify the purposes for which it has been used
The authors declare that they have used artificial intelligence for [writing, linguistic correction, or style improvement]. They must indicate the corresponding use and also the software.

Updated Article Processing Charge

The Article Processing Charge (APC) has been updated. The publication fee is now €595 per accepted article (from 2026-03-11).

Authors are encouraged to carefully review the new template and updated guidelines before preparing their manuscripts. These updates reflect JOTSE’s ongoing commitment to maintaining high standards of academic quality, transparency, and research integrity.

Call for papers special issue: The digital divide in digital educational ecosystems: challenges for equity and learning

The consolidation of digital educational ecosystems has profoundly transformed the conditions of access, production, and circulation of knowledge. However, these transformations are not distributed evenly. Inequalities in infrastructure, skills, technological governance models, and sociocultural conditions are shaping new forms of the digital divide that directly affect learning opportunities and educational equity.

The digital divide today affects not only access to devices or connectivity, but also the ability to participate meaningfully in complex digital environments, develop critical skills, benefit from artificial intelligence-based systems, and exercise rights in increasingly data-driven contexts. These inequalities have an impact on academic achievement, educational trajectories, and the reproduction or transformation of pre-existing social inequalities.

This special issue proposes a critical analysis of how digital educational ecosystems can either widen gaps or, conversely, become tools for promoting greater equity and better learning conditions. Readers are invited to reflect on the structural, pedagogical, and sociocultural factors that mediate this tension.

Thematic lines

1. Digital Infrastructure and Inequalities in Learning Opportunities: Access to connectivity, devices, and virtual environments across different educational levels; territorial digital divides (urban–rural, regional) and their impact on educational trajectories; infrastructure for platforms and artificial intelligence–based systems; digital public policies aimed at ensuring equity in access to online learning; digital material conditions as determinants of educational outcomes.

2. Digital Competencies and Gaps in Pedagogical Appropriation: Teacher and student digital literacy and its relationship to learning quality; critical digital competence in platform- and algorithm-mediated environments; pedagogical integration of digital technologies and effects on meaningful learning; educational use of artificial intelligence and inequalities in capacities for appropriation; gaps in digital capital and their impact on academic achievement.

3. Digital Ecosystems, Platforms, and Artificial Intelligence: Unequal Distribution of Educational Benefits:Platformization of education and digital reorganization of the teaching–learning process; algorithmic governance, datafication, and automated assessment in digital educational contexts; integration of artificial intelligence in teaching and evaluation and its differentiated impacts on learning; technological dependency and concentration of power in digital educational provision; alternative digital models oriented toward educational justice.

4. Sociocultural Dimensions of the Digital Divide and Learning in Digitalized Contexts: Gender and inequalities in participation and performance in digital environments; migration, linguistic diversity, and digital barriers to learning; accessibility and universal design in digital educational platforms; intersectionality and exclusion in digitalized educational ecosystems; algorithmic bias and discrimination in digital educational systems.

The rapid advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT) is reshaping the educational paradigm, as in the sciences of education and in engineering and technology disciplines. The emergence of Industry 5.0 emphasizes the symbiotic collaboration between humans and intelligent systems, making it imperative to train future professionals with skills that integrate cognitive intelligence and highly interconnected technological environments. Likewise, AI and IoT are an opportunity to provide more inclusive and personalized education.

In this context, the teaching of disciplines such as electronics, automation, robotics, embedded computing, didactics or educational research requires innovative methodologies that incorporate AI to enhance personalized learning, optimize virtual and physical laboratory environments and foster the development of professional competencies aligned with the needs of industry and education. The synergy between AI and IoT in education improves the teaching of cyber-physical systems (CPS) and embedded technologies and enables adaptive and inclusive learning approaches based on real-time data.

This special issue aims to showcase cutting-edge research on the application of AI techniques (e.g., machine learning, natural language processing, large language models, expert systems, reasoning mechanisms, recommender systems, computer vision) and IoT technologies (e.g., architectures, platforms, frameworks, development environments, collaborative scenarios, protocols, devices) in technical education and the social sciences, providing a comprehensive overview of current developments, practical tools, and the challenges of integrating these technologies into curricula. We invite theoretical, experimental, and applied studies that address integrating advanced technologies into educational programs and assessing their impact on knowledge acquisition and skill development.

Alejandro Lorenzo Lledó

Alejandro Lorenzo Lledó holds an International Doctorate in Educational Research, obtaining the Extraordinary Doctorate Award. He teaches at the Faculty of Education Sciences at the University of Granada (Spain). He has developed a relevant research career with publications in the field of educational inclusion, audiovisual media in education and Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, Robotics and Artificial Intelligence applied to the attention of students with autism spectrum disorder. In this sense, he has more than 70 publications, including articles in JCR and SCOPUS journals. Member of European and national research projects, the most recent being: Design and application of a personalized and inclusive learning tool using Artificial Intelligence for students with autism spectrum disorder (PID2023-149706OB-I00), and The application of virtual reality and robotics in communication and social interaction of students with autism spectrum disorder (PID2020-112611RB-I00). He has been a speaker and member of the Scientific and Organizing Committee of several international congresses, such as the EDUTEC Congress and the CIEI Congress.

Paula Lamo

Paula Lamo (Member, IEEE) received the bachelor’s degrees in naval engineering and marine engineering and the master’s degrees in maritime engineering and teacher training from the University of Cantabria, Cantabria, Spain, in 2010 and 2011, respectively, the master’s degrees in integrated management of environmental quality and occupational risk prevention and renewable energy from the University CEU San Pablo, Madrid, Spain, in 2012 and 2013, respectively, the master’s and Ph.D. degrees in occupational risk prevention and industrial engineering from the University CEU San Pablo and the University of Cantabria, in 2014 and 2019, respectively. Since 2014, she has been collaborating as a Researcher with the Department of Electronics Technology, Systems and Automation Engineering, University of Cantabria. She is currently an Associate Professor with the Universidad Internacional de La Rioja, Logroño, Spain. Her research interests include Internet of Things, Power Electronics, NewSpace and Artificial Intelligence.

Today's society has undergone and is undergoing profound and structural changes that affect all areas and dimensions of society. Education centres, as an institution, do not seem to have changed as much. In Spain, there are many teachers in public and also private and subsidised schools who, discreetly or anonymously and in silence, have promoted and carry out projects and practices which, although isolated, correspond to "another education". On the other hand, for some time now we have had examples of schools that have been concerned and are concerned with substantially modifying the foundations, adding themselves to the group of centres considered to be centres of pedagogical renewal. From this perspective, this monograph aims to present knowledge and experiences related to practices carried out in schools at different educational levels, linked to pedagogical innovation and renewal. Therefore, it is intended that this monograph represents both an analysis of the educational system and the improvement of the organisation and educational practices that are being carried out in different educational centres with the aim of adapting to today's society.

Hired Doctor and Coordinator of the Area of Didactics of Mathematics of Experimental Sciences at the International University of La Rioja (UNIR). Principal Researcher of the Research Group "Active Methodologies and Mastery Learning" (MAML) of UNIR, and member of the research group "Development and Innovation of Educational Models" (HUM833) of the University of Seville. Representative of UNIR in the Research Network of Teachers of Mexico, Andorra and Spain (RIDMAE). Her lines of research focus on the application of active methodologies and digital resources in face-to-face and virtual environments, teacher training and competence assessment, technology and gender, and the study of pedagogical renewal processes.

Dra. Olga Buzón García

Assistant Professor at the Department of Didactics and Educational Organisation and coordinator of the Degree in Primary Education at the Faculty of Education Sciences of the University of Seville. Her main lines of work deal with active methodologies and ICT, evaluation of educational processes in virtual environments, emerging technologies, analysis of digital resources for teaching and research, gender and technology, among others. She belongs to the research group "Desarrollo e Innovación de Modelos Educativos (DIME)" (HUM-833) at the University of Seville and to the research group "Metodologías Activas y Mastery Learning (MAML) at the International University of La Rioja (UNIR).

Dr. Jordi Feu Gelis

Sociologist and pedagogue. With a degree in Political Science and Sociology from the Autonomous University of Barcelona and a PhD from the University of Girona, he is a lecturer in sociology and educational policy in the Faculty of Education and Psychology at this university. In recent years he has focused his research on the field of democracy and participation in schools and on contemporary pedagogical renewal. Since 1999 he has been the director of the mentoring project "Rossinyol" at the University of Girona, and since 2006 he has represented Spain in the European network "Mentor Migration: Training of students as mentors for migrant children in Europe", and since 2012 he has been the director of the Gabinete de Mentoría Social. He currently directs the GRES research group (University of Girona) and the SGR "Complex societies: from study to intervention" (recognised as a team of excellence by the Generalitat de Catalunya). In 2020 he promoted the Chair of Pedagogical Renewal (the first of its kind in Spain), from where he promotes research, training and dissemination related to a renovating and transforming educational approach.

Education, in general, is part of a changing and liquid society (Bauman, 2019) that has to evolve in tune with the changes occurring in the educational ecosystem. In this context, technologies appear that are gradually being incorporated into the educational environment and, consequently, new forms of teaching appear, i.e., the so-called emerging methodologies (Cabero-Almenara, 2022;Villamarin-Reinoso et al., 2022). The incorporation of these require a reflection based on experimentation, research and, therefore, on evidence that can support new educational models in teacher training to meet social challenges and the formation of citizens in the interpretation of reality and their realization as people. These methodologies cause the students to play an active role in the whole teaching-learning process and require teachers to undergo ongoing training in order to incorporate them and work in the classroom from a pedagogical, didactic and technological approach (augmented reality, flipped classroom, design thinking, gamification, m-learning...). Hence, talking about emerging methodologies goes beyond talking about technological renovation and integration, which are key aspects in these approaches, but also means thinking about the inclusion of participating voices in the educational processes from the interaction and democratization of the classroom (educational diversity and inclusion). In this sense, university education is not left behind, since "it must innovate in its teaching-learning processes and provide different means that help students to generate new ideas creatively, acquire skills adapted to the needs of the labor market and learn to respond appropriately to the demands of the environment". (Fernández Piqueras, et al. 2020, p.185). Therefore, the incorporation of these methodologies can favor the teaching-learning process in all areas of knowledge, but first the following questions should be rethought: how are we currently teaching, for whom are we teaching, what are we teaching for, etc.? Ultimately, the aim of this special issue is to answer these questions and to reflect on the teaching of the future and the changes we need to make to make it truly effective and efficient, so that students learn and adapt to the demands of the future.

JOTSE offers the possibility of publishing special issues on international conferences as long as they meet the following criteria:

It will be necessary to have an editor of the special issue who will work with JOTSE (as a mediator).
Before the celebration of the conference, the special issue must be previously announced on the conference website with a time exceeding one month.
The editor will select and contact potential authors to offer them participating in the special issue.
After the celebration of the Conference, the Conference’s editors will choose the candidate papers. The articles must have passed a review process previously and must comply with the journal publication standards (JOTSE).

Conditions of publication

Minimum number of publications: 5 papers. If less than 5 papers they will be published in a regular issue.
Maximum number of publications: 10 papers.
The publication fee is 3500 EUR. The total amount must be satisfied after the acceptation by editor-in-chief (JOTSE).

The editor is responsible of:

Proposing a topic that fits with the focus and scope of JOTSE
Searching for the authors and registering them in the JOTSE website.
Searching for the reviewers and registering them in the JOTSE website.
Controlling the double-blind peer review process through the JOTSE website and the final scientific quality of the papers.
Checking for the periods of the different steps of the process.

Restrictions

Minimum number of publications: 8 papers. If less than 8 papers they will be published in a regular issue.
Maximum number of publications: 15 papers.
There must be a minimum of 3 different nationalities among the authors of the special and no more than 5 authors from the same institution.
After the selection of papers from the editor, these papers are the candidates to be published. Then, editors-in-chief of JOTSE will do the final selection. Only in case the editors-in-chief accept the manuscript, it can be published.

The organizing committee of JIDA’17 will inform the Editors-in chief-of JOTSE the names 10 authors nominated (maximum) to submit their papers to the especial issue of JOTSE: “WORKSHOP ON EDUCATIONAL INNOVATION IN ARCHITECTURE.JIDA”. The Editor-in-Chief of JOTSE will have full editorial control of the journal content. The nominated authors should submit their manuscripts directly to the journal using the online manuscript submission system of the journal. Authors also need to know the following:

UNIVEST is intent on fostering comprehensive and relevant reflection on the teaching-learning process in universities, with a well-defined will to transform educational, training and institutional processes from the standpoint of open debate with all agents involved.

In this sense, the intention behind the V International UNIVEST Conference is to provide a integrative and critical outlook on the assessment process. Assessment, understood as an activity integrated in general university training, with active participation on the part of all subjects involved in all educational stages. That is why a very diverse perspective is sought, from the point of view of methodology processes, in which students and teachers alike are involved in analysing repercussions as well as internal and external value, etc. Ultimately, the idea is to evaluate and conceptualise the meaning, moment and procedures of the assessment process: what, why, for what purpose and how the functional and instrumental roles coexist with the educational and collaborative one.

The emphasis in this edition, once more, is on creating a clearly participatory work dynamic, promoting debate and contrast as a basic dynamic. For this reason, as well as seeking a broad perspective encompassing teachers, students, technicians and other agents involved, it is also based on discussing and contrasting approaches. The programme is built upon lectures, which can be contested, commented communications and spaces for debate where prestigious specialists intervene, who contribute their ideas and reflections on assessment as a central component for analysis ans contrast.

We invite you all to participate in the next issue of JOTSE by sending articles related to any teaching experience taking place in your classrooms. In this sense, our aim is to implement improvements during the learning process or while investigating within the field of teaching. In the case of teaching experiences in particular, we would rather include those carried out in a subject, in a group of subjects or in a whole degree from the scientific and technological area.

Through JOTSE we would like to create a professional forum to exchange and disseminate any contribution that may involve educational innovation so as to achieve a more significant learning for our students at scientific and technological universities. Hence, our readers could use such proposals as a model to be applied and/or adopted in their own contexts. In fact, we have a special interest in receiving communications/articles related to experiences that imply a methodological change (when compared with a more traditional approach) and encourage or motivate students’ participation in their own learning process. These innovations could include from a “simple” change in the way of teaching or assessing a theoretical content, some lab activities or solving problems to a complete Engineering or Architecture Studies teaching plan design, in which evaluation and gradual implementation of generic or cross-curricular competences are obviously involved.

We include here examples of some possible topics for the forthcoming JOTSE issue (but not limited to):

• Assessment strategies and tools in scientific and/or technological studies

• Student’s involvement in scientific and/or technological studies

• Active methodologies in scientific and/or technological studies

• Implementation and assessment of generic or cross-curricular competences

• Scientific and/or technological studies teaching plan design

• Etc.

ERIH Plus The European Reference Index for the Humanities and the Social Sciences (ERIH PLUS) was created and developed by European researchers under the coordination of the Standing Committee for the Humanities (SCH) of the European Science Foundation (ESF).

K-hub Knowledge Hub in broad terms work as virtual library for scholars, researchers, students and faculties for their requirement of online resources such as e-journals, e-books, e-articles, e-newsletter, case reports, videos, conference proceedings, online sample issues on a single platform.

The Editors-in-Chief of the Journal of Technology and Science Education (JOTSE) in collaboration with the Scientific Committee of the UNIVEST’15 are going to publish a special issue on JOTSE: V International Conference UNIVEST’15 “The Challenges of improving assessment”.

Deadlines:

Submission manuscripts: November 15th, 2015

Publication: June 2016

The organizing committee of UNIVEST 2015 will inform the Editors-in chief-of JOTSE the names of 10 authors nominated to submit their papers to the especial issue of JOTSE: V International Conference UNIVEST’15 “The Challenges of improving assessment”. The Editor-in-Chief of JOTSE will have full editorial control of the journal content. The nominated authors should submit their manuscripts directly to the journal using the online manuscript submission system of the journal. Authors also need to know the following:

They need to register with the journal prior to submitting or, if already registered, can simply log in and follow the online manuscript submission process.
For technical support or queries related to manuscript submissions, they need to contact info@jotse.org.

Authors should take into account, during the preparation of their manuscript for publication, that the total length of the article should not exceed 10 pages. All papers must be clearly written in English, using correct spelling, grammatical, and punctuation. The communication style of the paper must be of academic standard. However, if the English standard used in the paper is not adequate, authors will be given the opportunity to revise their papers and they will be referred to editorial services, at their own cost. The manuscript file must be in MS Word format only (not PDF) using Template.

JOTSE in RACO

RACO (Catalan Journals in Open Access) is a cooperative repository where can be consulted, in open access, the full-text from articles of scientific, cultural and erudite Catalan journals.

The main purpose of RACO is to increase the visibility and consults of the journals included and to spread the scientific and academic production published in Catalan journals. This purpose makes specific in three aims: - To encourage the electronic edition of Catalan journals - To be the interface that allows the whole search of all the journals - To provide the instruments for its preservation.

RACO is a project of Consorci de Biblioteques Universitàries de Catalunya, of Centre de Serveis Científics i Acadèmics de Catalunya and Biblioteca de Catalunya. It also counts with the support of the Generalitat de Catalunya.

MIAR is a system to quantitatively measure the visibility of social science journals based on their presence in different types of databases. Those responsible for this project do not subscribe to any direct correlation between this value and other qualitative criteria such as quality of the magazine, which may influence other factors.
