Update: It’s been 16 years (originialy published June 1, 2010) since I published this and I still consider it one of my best inspirational posts on sharing the scary part of figuring out life’s journey. Scroll to the bottom for a 2019 update, a 2026 update coming soon.

I had one of those moments today.

You know the one, it’s an “a ha” moment.

The one where the light bulb goes off and everything “clicks.”

I feel like I’ve been fighting against myself for as long as I can remember. Lately, I’ve been in the middle of a horrendous mid-life crisis. It’s been awful.

However, I’m beginning to wonder how much fear has played into this crisis.

It’s no secret that I don’t like hate despise abhor my day job.

It’s not that its difficult or the people are mean but I basically see my job as answering a phone (in reality I’m the admin assistant to 4 managers).

It’s so mundane, every day is the exact same thing.

I went to college, graduated with honors and hold a degree in International Business Management, yet I answer a freaking phone for a living (o.k….that is a whole other post peeps, maybe someday I’ll be able to share…..)

But I will say this, it’s depressing.

I thought I would have a career, something I looked forward to going to every day.

Something besides working to just bring home a paycheck. That has not happened.

So, to combat the depression of my job, I decided to pursue my love of photography and turn it into a part-time photography business.

I’ve never considered taking the photo business full time because of a healthy dose of fear and the big “what-if” theories.

What if I fail?

What if it doesn’t make enough money?

What if I can’t support the family?

I was raised to never take chances, to never do anything non-traditional.

I was raised to believe that you get married, have children, and maybe work a job. Stay safe, don’t try anything too crazy.

It’s funny how those childhood lessons have lasted way into life.

My light bulb moment came today while I was having a conversation with my mom.

Me: Mom, have I told you about Family On Bikes. This couple and their twin boys are riding their bikes along the entire Pan-American highway. From Alaska all the way to Argentina. It’s a 2 1/2 year journey. How cool is that!”

Mom: WHAT!??!!?!? Aren’t they afraid of being raped and murdered???

Me: [crickets] [pick jaw up off floor–remains speechless]

Mom: {just gives one of those “mom looks” and walks away}

Beat Back The Fear Tactics

Wow, just wow. It was one of those moments that made me take a look back and realize that people, especially family, will use fear tactics to hold you back.

I suddenly saw so many moments over the course of my life that people have used fear tactics and IT WORKED!!!

Shame. On. Me.

I then remembered a blog post by one of my all-time favorite photographers Zack Arias. Zack is my inspiration.

He is proof that hard work, determination, and dedication allow you to live your dream.

One of my favorite blog posts by Zack is titled:

“How Many Of You Are Standing On The Dock?”

It’s powerful, it’s insightful, and it speaks to my very soul. I really relate to this part of the post (note: this post is no longer published online)

“It’s like sitting in a bar in a harbour town hearing people come off the ships telling stories about new lands they have found. You know what a boat is.

You know how it works.

But you have no idea how to go get your own boat and set off to find new land of your own…..You are standing on the dock and you can always stand on that dock.

Always.

Or you can get in a boat and push off.

A well-known photographer once said that they dove in over their heads and swam for the top.

That’s pretty inspirational.

I’ve done the same thing.

However, I don’t think they said anything about how many dead bodies that they had to swim by to get to the surface again.

Want to climb to the top of Mount Everest?

You’ll be passing the dead bodies of those who wanted the same thing and never made it.

But damn it all! Those dead souls died climbing.

How many explorers have died exploring?

Countless.

How many explorers have died sitting at home?

Countless still.”

Do You Have What It Takes To JUMP?

That sums it up so well. Zack wrote this piece back in August of 2009. I’m still standing on the dock trying to figure out how to use my boat.

At what point do I just jump in and figure it out as I go. I can die giving it 110% and trying my hardest or I can die sitting in my safe zone.

In the end, the results are the same.

Is Fear Holding You Back From Your Dreams?

How many of us are allowing fear to hold us back from reaching for our dreams?

I’ve started researching and reading (I must say I’m GREAT at both-lol) about relocating, about living a life of non-conformity, about taking the plunge to own a part-time business that generates enough income to help support the household (I need to provide at least 1/2 of our required income).

I’m not exactly sure what my plans are for the future. I need to have a heart to heart with myself and figure it out.

I don’t know the answers.

Y’all know I’m just this side of crazy so maybe this post is the crazy bus getting a little closer to my stop.

Here’s what I do know.

Are You Tired?

I’m tired of going to work for someone else every day.

I’m tired of looking at the walls of my 7am-3pm prison.

I’m tired of living in this itty bitty northern community that has no opportunities.

I’m tired of the long, cold, hard winters.

I’m just tired.

Does life have to be just working the daily grind and sucking it up?

Or is there something more, something else that I am too afraid of trying?

Maybe as adults and parents, this is all there is. Maybe we gave up the right to live our dreams the day we brought new life into this world. I don’t know.

I do know that there have to be people out there living their dream–I haven’t personally met them, but I do believe they exist.

UPDATE 9.30.2019

Wondering what’s happened in the past 9 years?

NOTE: This was originally published in 2011, updated at the bottom in 2019, taken off line for a number of year and republished now as a reminder to myself and others and will have a 2026 update in the near future.

For years I have let fear dictate my life. It has been a constant chatter of:

“Don’t quit your job–you’ll never find another one”

“Don’t move to a different place, you won’t find work or a place to live”

“Don’t travel, the world is dangerous”

“Work more, have more jobs, make more money..you don’t want to end up broke and homeless do you?”

This and so much more has been the recurring thoughts over the last 20 years.

So, I put my head down, dug in, and proceeded to live the “American dream”: married, 2 kids, house, 2 cars, a job with benefits. Check, check, check.

Note, I really think this is the dream of my parents’ generation. You get married and you stay at a job for 25 years, you retire, if you’re lucky you enjoy a few years of retirement, and then die.

I can’t believe I’ve bought into this lie for so long.

I have always felt an internal struggle.

I knew this wasn’t how I wanted to live, but I allowed fear to hold me back and to whisper in my ear that this was as good as it was ever going to get.

You know the fear gremlin, the one that says “Who do you think you are expecting to live your dream?” “You have a great job/life…why do you think you deserve anything else?” and on and on ad nauseam.

Do you ever feel this way? That you are having a tug of war between “what is expected” and “living your dream”?

I just read a great article by Barrie Davenport that said the things you fear really does not exist.

That “our fears are just stories we tell ourselves.”

We then allow those stories to make us a victim, we have built up the stories in our mind and it has become truth.

That really resonated with me, especially during this time of transition.

A year ago I started toying with an idea.

I paid off bills, I reduced expenses, and I saved money.

Fear was along for the entire ride. Telling me I couldn’t make it happen, telling me I wasn’t good enough, or even worthy of living the life I want.

A couple of weeks ago I finally looked that fear in the eye and told it to get behind me. That I no longer wanted it in my life.

I have lived in its shadow for far too damn long and I am done!

And then I closed my eyes and

jumped

At the end of this month, I am quitting my job and pursuing the things I love: photography, blogging, and travel.

No longer will I allow my life to be dictated to by a corporation. I refuse to continue to be just a cog in their big machine. {{side note: I will be doing freelance work, on my terms, so if you were worried about my financial well being, fear not, I’ve got it covered, but thanks for the concern :)}}

Scared?? You better believe it.

The initial stomach churn of the free fall is in full effect.

The fear starts to eat away at me and I have

to wrestle control from it and

tell it to back the hell off!

Will I make mistakes?? You betcha.

Will I learn from them. I sure will.

Is it a mistake to quit my well paying job in a down economy so that I have more time to truly live my life?

Maybe, but that’s the thing, you don’t know it’s a mistake until you try.

And I’ve decided I would rather live the rest of my life filled with “at least I tried” instead of “what if’s”

It’s taken me a LONG time to get to this point, but that is o.k. I’ve needed all the experiences in my life up to this point to make sure I’m successful in the future, I truly believe that.

One thing I know for certain is that the changes I’m making will create a whole new world for me.

I was once told that I could stand in a boat tied to the dock of life and watch all the other ships pass by.

Always.

Or I could push off from shore and see where the tide takes me.

The choice was mine and I was reminded that boats aren’t built for the harbor, they are built for sailing the seas.

Just like our lives are not meant to be lived in fear, they are meant to be embraced and lived fully; both the width and length of it.

An Update: 8+ Years Later (9.30.2019)

Note: The year before the leap was difficult. Read about recognizing fear and living my best life ever here.

It’s hard to believe it’s been 8+ years since I wrote this post.

What an incredible journey it has been.

It hasn’t always been sunshine and unicorns, but I can tell you it’s ALWAYS been worth it.

I have not once regretted quitting my day job and pursuing a different career path.

Not. Once.

Were their failures along the way? You better believe it. Way too many failures, but that’s ok because at least I tried something new and different.

Those failures and success have led me to live my best life ever and for that, I’m eternally grateful.

Since this post, I’ve traveled to countless places, met incredible people, written two travel books, sent two children off to start their own journeys and have found a place of gratitude and joy I didn’t know was possible.

Would I do it all over again?

Without hesitation.

The thing is though, standing on the cliff, the view can often be foggy. You can’t see the net that is waiting to catch you.

The view of the opportunities that await you are blocked.

It, quite honestly, is a leap of faith.

However, the only thing that is certain is that none of us get out of this alive. We can either go living our dreams and taking chances or we can go sitting on the couch watching life pass us on by.

That’s the thing with leaps of faith. You have to have a whole lotta faith, maybe a backup plan, and a big set of balls.

It’s scary AF, but what a rush. There is no better feeling than to know you tried and succeeded.

Am I saying quit your day job? Heck no! We have to have some way to fund those dreams 🙂

I’m saying follow those dreams, live your best life and do that while taking care of your finances. I’m proof it can be done!

It’s not all playtime here. I work HARD, but it’s worth every ounce of sweat and tears. Find your dream, give it a go. I’m convinced that we’re allowed to have as many dreams as possible. Some of those we may find aren’t a good fit or maybe they aren’t meant to last forever.

Try them on for size, wear them around for a while. When you’re ready, grab ahold of the next dream.

What’s better than looking back on the fabric of your life and seeing it woven with the dreams you lived?

That should be our goal: No Regrets!

Living our best life every, single. day.

I’ve been on the journey of blogging and travel writing for almost 10 years.

I feel a shift and change coming.

I’m not sure what that looks like yet, but I feel more aware of myself and the universe around me to know that something big is going to happen soon.

Maybe another book will start to be penned? Maybe another site beyond StrangerTravelsUSA will be started? Heck, maybe I’m ready to start a new business.

Whatever it is, it’s going to be great and when the opportunity presents itself I know I’ll be ok taking another giant leap of faith.

One study revealed that, in 2024, U.S. retail sales were up 3.4% on Black Friday (excluding automotive sales). Of these, e-commerce sales jumped 14.6%, while in-store sales rose just 0.7%. These numbers show that more and more consumers are taking advantage of Black Friday sales both online and in physical stores. (1)

Some of these buyers won’t think twice about where their money goes. But you’re different. That’s why you’re here. You care about the workers who made your clothes, the farmers who grew your food, and the planet your kids will inherit.

Well, you don’t have to choose between saving money and supporting companies that do right by people and the environment anymore. Some brands are actually proving that profits and principles can coexist.

Here are a few ethical brands that are trying to do better this Black Friday and are perfect holiday gift ideas:

Ecosa

Ecosa’s Black Friday sale takes up to 35% off everything: mattresses, sofa beds, bed frames, pillows and more.

Unlike brands that slap “eco-friendly” on everything, Ecosa is a certified B Corporation with a 106.8 impact score. For context, you only need 80 to qualify as a B Corp. That means independent verification of their environmental and social practices.

Every Ecosa mattress cover and Rio Sofa Bed fabric is crafted from recycled ocean-bound plastic bottles, which are OceanCycle™ certified. With mattress warranties of up to 15 years, you’re investing in something built to last, not a mattress you’ll need to replace in a few years. Ecosa offers savings during Black Friday without compromising on either quality or ethics, making them worth supporting if your bedroom needs an upgrade.

Girlfriend Collective

Girlfriend Collective, known for activewear, is a leader in sustainable fashion. Its size range is genuinely inclusive, and the designs work too.

Even Forbes recognizes it for its sustainable practices. They turn recycled water bottles into fabrics. They also direct 1% of every purchase to a charity of the buyer’s choice. This proves that Girlfriend Collective thinks about social impact and environmental responsibility, not just profits.(2)

They make everything ethically. Fair living wages, safe working conditions, and transparent production. They’re not hiding anything about how their clothes get made.

This Black Friday, Girlfriend Collective is offering affordable deals. You’ll get pieces that last, feel good to wear, and don’t harm the planet.

Caraway

Most people spend a lot of money on kitchenware. In 2024, the global kitchenware market hit USD$72.8 billion. This number is expected to rise to reach about USD$109.7 billion by 2034. This means that brands have to be more innovative and sustainable to meet the rising demands. (3)

Caraway gets it. Their ceramic-coated posts and pans skip toxic chemicals you’ll likely find in cheaper cookware. The manufacturing process is cleaner, and they use eco-packaging instead of mountains of plastic.

Their products look good too. Clean lines, thoughtful design, and colors that work in a real kitchen.

This Black Friday, they’re taking a good percentage off sitewide on select products. The cookware and bakeware sets are usually the highlight. You’ll save money now and get appliances that are safer for your family and easier on the planet.

Ethique

Ethique makes sustainable beauty products: solid bars for hair, face, and body care. They use compostable and eco-friendly packaging to remove plastic from personal care routines.

But that’s not all. They use fair-trade ingredients and certified organic botanicals too. And the people growing and harvesting these raw materials receive fair pay.

One bar replaces multiple bottles, and it lasts way longer than you’d think. Your shower gets less cluttered, and you’re not tossing plastic every month.

If you’d like to try them someday, Black Friday is a great time. You get an easy swap and make a real impact on a budget.

HALOBLK

In the first quarter of 2025, Tesla produced more than 362,000 vehicles and delivered about 336,000. That’s a lot of new cars that need accessories. But how they’re produced matters.(4)

HALOBLK makes premium accessories for Tesla vehicles. These include wheel covers, pedals, and interior upgrades. All have clean designs and solid materials that withstand daily wear.

Some of their products use recycled materials, reducing production waste. They’re open about how they produce parts and where materials come from.

HALOBLK may not be a traditional sustainability brand, but its products last long enough. So, you won’t need to replace them every few months. And that matters in sustainability.

Black Friday usually brings solid discounts on their lineup. If you plan to upgrade your Tesla, this is when those improvements become more affordable.

Wrapping Up

Black Friday is full of good deals. It’s also a chance to shop from ethical brands. The options here prove you can find responsible production and fair labor without giving up convenience.

One good purchase can cut waste, support better working conditions, or just add something durable to your home. As you browse the sales this Black Friday, pick ethical brands. This way, your money will count for something more than just buying things.

When it comes to sprucing up the home, there are some fantastic ideas homeowners are sharing with each other. From kitchen spaces to loft conversions, so many plans are executed to perfection. Even when assessing a home’s outdoor setting, dedicated gamers are looking to gamify their gardens.

After all, as far as entertainment options go, gaming is one of the biggest. It should, therefore, come as no surprise to see homeowners everywhere deciding to go with a gaming-inspired garden design. From console favorites like Elden Ring and iconic franchises like the Zelda series to online blackjack games like Touchdown Blackjack and battle royale masterpieces like Fortnite, almost everyone is gaming these days, and there are some special titles to bring into the home.

Of course, not all gamers necessarily want to gamify their gardens, but some do. So, if you’re considering doing the same to your backyard, below are some ways to create a gaming-themed garden.

Focus on layout

First and foremost, you need to assess the layout of your garden to see what could work and what might not. For instance, if you’re keen to add a classic maze as you see in Pac-Man, then it might not work if you don’t have the required space. Likewise, if you want a donkey theme, given your love of Donkey Kong, then you’ll need to ensure you have enough trees. Additionally, do you have the right layout to add colored paving stones that represent game paths? These playful elements can really make or break your design, making it important to focus on the layout of your outside space before embarking on your build.

Consider adding statues of familiar characters

A sure-fire way to bring a gaming theme to your garden is by adding some familiar characters to it. You’ll need to check whether the product you’re interested in is suitable for the outdoors, but if it is, then throwing in some iconic gaming faces into your bushes and on your patio can really go a long way. From a Fallout Dark Horse PVC Ghoul Statue to classic Spider-Man creations, you’ll be filled with potential acquisitions to make here should you decide to adopt this particular approach.

Create a wildlife-friendly space

Some of the most iconic games out there also feature large populations of loveable creatures, including animals. If you want to bring some wildlife into your home, then consider making it inviting for local wildlife to frequent. Bird feeds work, butterfly gardens are lovely, and you even go with a bee hotel.

Add interactive features

To make your gaming-themed garden even more spectacular, you should consider adding some interactive game elements that mirror the real-life offering in the virtual world. You can turn ordinary garden features into playful additions. For instance, some people consider snapping up stepping stones that are based around a particular title. Likewise, you can add a life-sized chessboard or an outdoor bowling alley, while some people even add a mini racing track or a wizard’s chessboard from iconic productions like Harry Potter. There are so many avenues you can go down here.

Don’t forget to update it

In the same way that game updates can transform a title, gardens with a strong gaming theme should also be refreshed from time to time. Don’t be afraid to go with a new gaming theme at certain times of the year, while you could also add the same seasonal events many products have to your garden’s design. For instance, in the summer, you could add a sprinkling of anime art from Genshin Impact, while for Halloween, you might prefer a darker theme from Resident Evil.

Ever moved to a new city in Florida and found yourself staring at boxes one morning,
wondering whether it’s too early to find a new pizza place or too late to restart your life from
scratch? Sunshine helps, but even palm trees can’t disguise the strange mix of disorientation
and freedom that comes with relocating. In this blog, we will share how to build a daily routine
after a move that doesn’t leave you feeling unmoored.

The First Few Weeks Are More Than Just Logistics

Relocating looks organized on paper: hire movers, pack the essentials, update your address,
and plug in the coffee maker at your new place. But the hard part begins once the last box is
inside. The real challenge isn’t unpacking—it’s rebuilding rhythm. And that rhythm doesn’t
come back just because you start hanging pictures or arranging furniture. It shows up in the
quiet parts of your day: what time you wake up, where you get your groceries, how you
commute, and what the evening looks like after dinner.

People underestimate how much of their routine is tied to place. Your habits, even the small
ones—like which gym you go to or where you grab coffee—are built into the old environment.
Moving wipes the slate clean. For some, that feels exciting. For others, it’s more like being
dropped into someone else’s life without a script.

Taking help from Jacksonville long distance moving companies makes a huge difference. When
the actual move runs smoothly, your mental energy stays focused on what matters: getting
settled. You’re not recovering from broken furniture or lost items. You’re not chasing down
misplaced documents. You get a clean start without a mess to clean up first. Professionals who
specialize in these moves understand the difference between transporting belongings and
moving lives. That foundation matters more than people think when it comes to building
consistency in unfamiliar surroundings.

Start With the Hours That Don’t Move

The first step in any routine isn’t to fill your calendar—it’s to notice what’s already fixed. If you
work remotely or have a set job schedule, those hours define the structure. If you have kids in
school, your mornings and afternoons are already spoken for. Those are the hours that anchor
the day. Don’t try to fight them. Use them.

Build around the times you don’t control. If work starts at nine, create a pre-work block that
feels intentional. Instead of scrolling your phone and rushing through breakfast, walk around
the neighborhood, prep a simple meal, or take 10 minutes to map the day. Post-work routines
matter too. How you transition out of productivity mode affects how fast your brain starts to
associate your new home with rest.

Don’t aim for perfection. Aim for rhythm. If the goal is to take a walk at 7 a.m., don’t panic if it
becomes 7:30. Consistency matters more than precision. The body—and the mind—both need
predictability to settle.

Keep One Old Habit, Even in a New Place

You moved your furniture, your kitchen supplies, and possibly your entire social circle. But not
everything needs to change. Choose one habit that defined your old routine and bring it into
the new space. That could be making coffee a certain way, reading at lunch, or doing Sunday
laundry while music plays in the background.

Familiarity grounds you. Even in an unfamiliar city, even when the streets make no sense and
your GPS feels like it’s mocking you, something small that remains unchanged can serve as a
psychological anchor. The brain responds to repetition. That sense of “normal” is built not
through dramatic action but steady, quiet habit.

It also shortens the adjustment curve. You’re not reinventing every part of your day. You’re
transplanting part of your life into a different container, which makes the rest of the transition
feel less like chaos and more like recalibration.

Track Your Days, Not Just Your Tasks

Productivity culture loves to focus on checklists. But when you’ve relocated, tracking your
energy is more valuable than checking off errands. Notice what time of day you feel alert.
Notice when you tend to crash. Keep track of what meals you reach for, which activities drain
you, and what moments leave you feeling grounded.

This isn’t just mindfulness for the sake of it. It’s how you start to shape a routine that reflects
the new version of your life. Instead of copying the routine you had before, you build one based
on where you are and what you need now.

You’ll find patterns. Maybe your new place gets morning light and makes early starts feel
easier. Maybe traffic makes evenings the best time to work out. These aren’t abstract
discoveries—they’re the real, functional tools that shape how each week flows.

Don’t Overcommit in the Name of “Settling In”

The instinct to get everything “back to normal” leads a lot of people to say yes to everything.
Yes to new groups, yes to every invite, yes to events you’re not sure you even care about. It’s
natural. When you’re trying to build a life, everything looks like an opportunity.

But overcommitting just leads to exhaustion. It doesn’t create routine. It creates noise. Instead
of scattering your attention, focus on showing up consistently in just a few places. You don’t
need to make ten new friends in a month. You need to see the same people a few times, in the
same places, until you stop feeling like the new person.

Give your calendar breathing room. Routines aren’t built out of constant motion. They’re built
out of repetition. Choose your anchors wisely.

Use Transitions to Signal Progress

Transitions aren’t just emotional. They’re physical cues that help the brain shift gears. Create
rituals between parts of your day, especially in the beginning. That could mean lighting a candle
after work to start winding down or playing music when you finish breakfast to start focusing.
These small actions tell your body what’s coming next. Over time, they become automatic. The
mind stops resisting change because the steps between parts of the day become familiar.

And after a move—where nearly everything feels unfamiliar—those small transitions create
safety. Not dramatic safety, but quiet, consistent, predictable flow. That’s what gives new
routines their staying power.

The Routine Isn’t the Goal—It’s the Structure

Adjusting after a move can feel like an identity crisis. Your surroundings change. Your schedule
changes. Even your sense of time shifts. But routine is what lets you rebuild with purpose
instead of just reacting to everything around you.

Good routines don’t trap you. They hold you in place just long enough to feel steady again. You
don’t need to get it right in the first week. You just need to keep showing up. The routine forms
as you live it.

And one day, weeks from now, you’ll catch yourself loading the dishwasher or taking out the
trash or pulling into a driveway that no longer feels temporary—and realize the rhythm has
returned. Not because you forced it, but because you gave it space to grow.

When there is an urge to get off the beaten track a bit and shake up travel plans, coming up with
a new destination can be tough. For many, the tropical beach type vacation has been done time
and time again, and that’s because it’s the style of break that’s promoted heavily when you go to
a travel agent. But that’s not for everyone all the time, and finding inspiration to break the tired
old cycle can be tricky.

However, help is at hand, with a look at alternative sources of inspiration that could fuel your
next trip. If you are itching to hop on a plane or a train to go off and find your next adventure,
then you can forget all the boring ways, like visiting the travel agent or sinking countless hours
into internet searches. Why not, instead, use what’s around you to reveal where you should
head?

Getting in the Game

Who doesn’t play games these days? Whether it’s matching gems on your phone, battling it out
online with friends, or spinning the reels at an online casino for a touch of thrill, there’s
inspiration to be had. No need to splash out on a travel agent, either. For instance, on the best
MuchBetter casino platforms or PayPal-friendly sites, you can make small deposits with your
preferred e-wallet or card and try a few themed slots. Many draw on the cultures of Egypt,
Greece, or the jungles of Mexico.
If video games are more your thing, titles like Assassin’s Creed offer stunning recreations of real
cities such as Florence and Venice. You’ll find equally rich settings in Ghost of Tsushima, which
captures the landscapes and architecture of feudal Japan with exceptional attention to detail, or
Red Dead Redemption 2, set across the vivid streets of Saint Denis, inspired by New Orleans.
After experiencing places digitally, it could be worth jumping into them in real life, just to get your
own taste of adventure.

Booking the Date

Most people have to book some time off work to go about their travels, and the calendar can
serve as some great travel inspiration as well. Look up the date when you can travel and then
conduct research about what happened on that particular date in history. This doesn’t have to
be a monumental date like July 4th, for example, because dig deep enough into any date, and
you’ll find plenty of inspiration.

It could be travelling to Boston, Massachusetts on March 10th, matching the date and place
where Alexander Graham Bell made the first successful telephone call, or a visit to Berlin on
November 9th (fall of the Berlin wall) or perhaps a visit to the Bahamas on October 12th, when
Christopher Columbus first arrived there.

Asking AI

Although this is dipping your toes into internet research, checking out places where AI thinks is
a good idea for you to go could produce interesting results. Throw some prompts at it with what
type of holiday you are looking for, what adventures you’re looking for, and whether it’s
backpacking, glamping or city hopping, and see what it comes up with.
You can even get it to create an itinerary for you so you don’t miss a thing. This is increasingly
becoming a travel trend, given that we are relying on AI for everything, so let it get creative and
suggest somewhere you may never have thought of.

The Opposite Game

Not the most exciting thing in the world, but we all check the weather. You could play the
opposite game with whatever your weather app is telling you, by completely flipping your local
weather on its head and finding a location that matches the new conditions.
If your local weather is reporting nothing but clear blue skies and high humidity, why not shock
your system and go somewhere cold and arid? You could also do this geographically, because
if you are coming from a big city, plant yourself in a small rural town and enjoy the uniqueness
that those environments bring.

The Travel List

There are endless opportunities for creating a list of creative travel destinations. A lot of people
search for the best beaches in a location, but why not tap into some more random searches?
How about curating a list of the best Ghost Towns, UNESCO creative cities or bizarre
museums? You can really tap into your own passions and pastimes as inspiration for travel lists,
and it can be a great way to plan road trips.

Getting Creative

Travel doesn’t have to be mundane, and sources of inspiration can come from anywhere, such
as a social media snap, reading about a location in a novel, or even just discovering the name
of a city for the first time and deciding to go there on a whim. Creativity is the key to adventure
and fun.

Calling all KISS fans, did you know KISS once rocked in Cadillac, Michigan back in 1975? This fall, we’re turning back the clock and celebrating in true KISS fashion with the KISS 50 Cadillac Reunion happening October 9–12, 2025!

A Small Town Meets a Legendary Band

Picture it: small-town Michigan in the early ‘70s. Autumn weekends mean crisp air, changing leaves, and a packed stadium for Viking football. The community rallies behind its team, which just wrapped up a flawless season. Hopes are sky-high until the following year begins with back-to-back losses. Spirits sink, and coaches Dave Brines and Jim Neff know they need something different to fire up their players.

That’s when Jim Neff, the assistant coach with a passion for rock and roll, turns to music. Not just any music, though something bold enough to shake things up. His pick? A rising band called KISS. Their thunderous sound, explosive energy, and in your face style were unlike anything Cadillac had seen before. And as fate would have it, their name lined up perfectly with an old football saying: Keep It Simple, Stupid.

The effect was immediate. The locker room buzzed with adrenaline, the team roared back with new confidence, and Cadillac unknowingly carved its name into KISS history. What started as a coaching experiment soon turned into a legendary connection between a small Michigan town and one of the world’s biggest rock bands.

When KISS finally rolled into Cadillac in 1975, the town went wild. Fans lined the streets to see the band in full makeup, and the players got a once in a lifetime pep boost when the group joined them on the field. Autographs were signed, photos were snapped, and Cadillac suddenly found itself on the national radar, all thanks to a bold rock band and a small-town team looking for a spark.

Experience the KISS 50 Cadillac Reunion

Now, fifty years later, Cadillac is ready to celebrate that legendary connection. For four days this October, our little town in Northern Michigan will be filled with KISS spirit, music, stories, and plenty of rock and roll nostalgia. In between the events, you can soak in the fall colors, stroll downtown, or explore the lakes and trails that make Cadillac such a perfect autumn getaway.

Mark your calendars, KISS fans, because this is one reunion you won’t want to miss.

This October, we’re bringing that legendary energy back to life! From downtown displays and museum exhibits to live music, tailgates, and even a KISS-themed drone show, the KISS 50 Cadillac Reunion lets fans experience the spirit of 1975 all over again. Whether you’re reliving the memories or discovering Cadillac’s rock history for the first time, every moment of the weekend is packed with music, fun, and nostalgia.

Traveling can be more enjoyable when you combine tasty snacks with engaging online activities. By incorporating both elements, your journeys become more fulfilling and entertaining. Discover how to integrate delightful snacks and digital entertainment into your travel routine.

As you prepare for your next adventure, think about how combining delicious snacks with entertaining online activities can enhance your travel experience. Ensuring you have everything you need for comfort and enjoyment is key to a successful trip. Snacks keep you energized, while online activities provide a mental break and entertainment during downtime. Exploring options like free spins no deposit platforms can offer exciting moments during your journey.

Preparing Travel-friendly Snacks

When packing for a trip, it’s essential to consider snacks that are both nutritious and easy to prepare. Homemade granola bars, packed with oats, nuts and dried fruits, provide a quick energy boost without the hassle of refrigeration. Pair them with a handful of mixed nuts for a protein-packed punch that will keep hunger at bay during long stretches on the road.

If you’re looking for something savory, consider preparing roasted chickpeas seasoned with your favorite spices. Not only are they crunchy and satisfying, but they’re also rich in fiber and protein. Another option is vegetable chips made from thinly sliced sweet potatoes or kale, lightly drizzled with olive oil and baked to perfection. These snacks are not only healthy but also add a touch of gourmet flair to your travel menu.

Keeping hydrated is just as important as snacking smartly. Bring along some homemade fruit-infused water bottles to stay refreshed without added sugars. Simply slice up fruits like lemon, cucumber, or berries and let them steep in water overnight. This refreshing drink pairs well with any snack choice and ensures you maintain hydration throughout your travels.

Enjoying Online Entertainment on the Go

Incorporating online activities into your travel downtime can transform ordinary moments into exciting experiences. With the advent of mobile technology, accessing entertainment options has never been easier. For those moments when you need a break from sightseeing, exploring engaging online options such as games can offer a fun diversion.

These games provide not only entertainment but also the thrill of winning without any initial investment. They can be enjoyed from the comfort of your hotel room or while waiting for transportation. Additionally, listening to podcasts or audiobooks during long journeys can make time fly by while enriching your mind with new insights and stories.

The convenience of portable devices allows you to explore these activities anywhere, enhancing your travel experience significantly. Whether it’s catching up on favorite shows or trying out new games, online entertainment ensures there’s never a dull moment during your trip.

Balancing Snacking and Gaming

While enjoying snacks and online games, it’s crucial to maintain balance to avoid overindulgence that might detract from your overall travel experience. Start by setting specific times for snacking so that it doesn’t interfere with meal plans or sightseeing schedules. Similarly, allocate dedicated time slots for gaming to ensure you’re making the most out of your trip.

Mindful eating practices help you savor each bite without rushing through meals or snacks. Enjoying your favorite game in moderation prevents burnout and keeps it enjoyable rather than becoming a distraction from the trip itself. Consider sharing these activities with fellow travelers to enhance social interactions and create shared memories.

Remember that travel is an opportunity for exploration and relaxation; finding harmony between snacking and gaming enhances this experience without overshadowing it. By staying aware of consumption habits in both food and screen time, you’ll find a more fulfilling travel routine that caters to all aspects of well-being.

Navigating your financial future often means choosing between a variety of savings and investment options, each designed for different stages of life and financial goals. From Roth IRAs and 401(k)s to reverse mortgages and traditional savings accounts, the range of tools can feel overwhelming. Understanding the key differences — and knowing which is best for your unique situation — can be the difference between a comfortable retirement and financial uncertainty.

This article dives into several popular financial instruments, highlighting their benefits, drawbacks, and the profiles of people who are best served by each.

1. Roth IRA

What It Is

A Roth Individual Retirement Account (IRA) is a retirement savings account where you contribute after-tax income. That means your money grows tax-free and you can withdraw it tax-free in retirement, provided certain conditions are met.

Key Features

Tax-free growth and withdrawals

Contribution limit: $7,000 for 2025 ($8,000 if you’re over 50)

No required minimum distributions (RMDs)

Income eligibility: Single filers must earn under $161,000 to contribute the full amount (phase-out starts at $146,000)

Pros

No taxes on qualified withdrawals

Great for young professionals expecting income growth

Can withdraw contributions (not earnings) at any time without penalty

Cons

Contributions are not tax-deductible

Income limits can exclude high earners

Best For:

Young workers, people in lower tax brackets now, and those who want flexibility in retirement withdrawals.

2. Traditional 401(k)

What It Is

A 401(k) is a tax-deferred retirement savings plan sponsored by an employer. Contributions are made pre-tax, lowering your taxable income, and you pay taxes on withdrawals in retirement.

Key Features

Tax-deferred growth

Higher contribution limits than IRAs: $23,000 for 2025 ($30,500 for age 50+)

Employer match in many cases

Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs) begin at age 73

Pros

Reduces current taxable income

Higher contribution limits

Employer match = free money

Cons

Taxes due on withdrawals

Limited investment options

Early withdrawal penalties before age 59½

Best For:

Mid-career employees, higher earners, and those with access to employer-sponsored plans.

3. Roth 401(k)

What It Is

A hybrid option combining features of a Roth IRA and a traditional 401(k). Contributions are made after-tax, but withdrawals are tax-free.

Key Features

No income limits

Same contribution limits as a 401(k)

RMDs required, but can be rolled into a Roth IRA to avoid them

Pros

Tax-free withdrawals

Higher contribution limits than Roth IRA

Ideal for long-term tax planning

Cons

Contributions don’t reduce current taxable income

Still subject to RMDs unless rolled into a Roth IRA

Best For:

High-income earners who anticipate higher taxes in retirement and want to diversify their tax exposure.

4. Reverse Mortgage

What It Is

Under the definition of a reverse mortgage, homeowners aged 62 or older can use this option to convert part of the equity in their home into cash — without selling the home or paying additional monthly bills.

Key Features

Loan is repaid when the homeowner dies, sells the home, or moves out

The most common type is the Home Equity Conversion Mortgage (HECM)

Pros

Access to home equity without monthly payments

Can supplement retirement income

Non-taxable income

Cons

Reduces inheritance for heirs

High fees and closing costs

Can jeopardize your home if terms are violated

Best For:

Retirees with limited income but significant home equity, especially those planning to age in place.

5. Traditional IRA

What It Is

Similar to a 401(k), a Traditional IRA offers tax-deferred savings but is not employer-sponsored. Contributions may be tax-deductible depending on your income and whether you’re covered by a workplace retirement plan.

Key Features

Contribution limit: Same as Roth IRA

RMDs begin at age 73

Tax-deductible contributions for qualifying individuals

Pros

Grows tax-deferred

Flexible investment options

Can lower current taxable income

Cons

Taxed upon withdrawal

Early withdrawal penalties

RMDs required

Best For:

Individuals without access to a 401(k) or looking for additional retirement savings beyond employer plans.

6. Health Savings Account (HSA)

What It Is

A Health Savings Account is a tax-advantaged account for medical expenses. It’s only available with high-deductible health plans (HDHPs), but it doubles as a retirement savings vehicle.

Key Features

Triple tax advantage: contributions, growth, and withdrawals (for qualified expenses) are all tax-free

Contribution limits for 2025: $4,300 (individual), $8,650 (family)

Pros

Unmatched tax benefits

Can be used as a secondary retirement account

Funds roll over year to year

Cons

Must be paired with a HDHP

Non-medical withdrawals before age 65 incur a 20% penalty

Best For:

Health-conscious savers, self-employed individuals, and those maxing out traditional retirement plans.

7. Brokerage Accounts

What It Is

A brokerage account allows you to invest in stocks, bonds, ETFs, and mutual funds without tax-deferred benefits.

Key Features

No contribution or income limits

Taxed annually on capital gains and dividends

Pros

Full liquidity and flexibility

No penalties for withdrawals

Unlimited contributions

Cons

No tax breaks

Requires active management to minimize taxes

Best For:

High-net-worth individuals looking for flexibility, or those who’ve maxed out other retirement vehicles.

8. Certificates of Deposit (CDs)

What It Is

CDs are time deposits offered by banks and credit unions that pay a fixed interest rate for a set term, usually with penalties for early withdrawal.

Key Features

Terms range from 3 months to 5 years or more

Insured by FDIC (or NCUA for credit unions)

Pros

Very low risk

Guaranteed returns

Suitable for short-term savings goals

Cons

Low yield compared to inflation and market returns

Illiquid

Best For:

Conservative savers and retirees seeking a safe, short-term place to park cash.

Which Option is Right for You?

Profile

Best Financial Tool(s)

Young professional, low tax bracket

Roth IRA, HSA, Roth 401(k)

Mid-career, higher income

Traditional 401(k), Roth 401(k), HSA

Self-employed

Traditional or Roth IRA, Solo 401(k), HSA

Approaching retirement

Traditional IRA, Reverse Mortgage (if home equity is needed), CDs

Already retired with home equity

Reverse Mortgage, CDs, Brokerage Account

High-income investor

Roth 401(k), Brokerage Account, Backdoor Roth IRA

Health-focused saver

HSA (used for long-term savings and medical costs)

Final Thoughts

There’s no one-size-fits-all solution when it comes to financial planning. The right mix of accounts — whether it’s a Roth IRA, 401(k), or even a reverse mortgage — depends on your income, lifestyle, retirement goals, and how comfortable you are with risk.

Working with a financial advisor can help you create a tailored plan, but understanding the basics puts you in a stronger position to make smart, confident decisions about your future.

Let your goals drive your strategy, and diversify your options to manage both taxes and risks along the way.

Ever stepped off the curb in Ohio and wondered which way the grocery store is—and if you’ll feel this disoriented forever? Whether you’ve relocated for work, family, or a fresh start, adjusting to a new city comes with a learning curve no GPS can fix. From unfamiliar traffic patterns to new social norms, it takes effort to rebuild a rhythm that feels natural. In this blog, we will share everyday tips for navigating life in a new city with confidence.

Get Your Bearings Early

Your surroundings affect your sense of comfort more than you might think. Before you try to build a new social life or reestablish your morning routine, start by understanding your neighborhood. Learn the streets, walk to the nearby coffee shop, figure out where to buy toothpaste at 10 p.m. when you’ve inevitably forgotten it. These small but foundational moves build familiarity fast and reduce that drifting feeling that tends to hang around during the early days in a new place.

You don’t need to explore everything all at once. Start with your essentials—commute, groceries, pharmacy—and then expand outward. Over time, what felt foreign will slowly begin to register as routine. Structure makes space for spontaneity, and eventually, you’ll notice you’re not checking your maps app quite as often.

Start Smart with the Right Help

Relocation doesn’t just begin when the boxes arrive. How you get from your old life to your new one often sets the tone for everything that follows. A reputable Columbus moving company like Black Tie Moving helps take the chaos out of the transition, letting you land with your sanity intact. Their attention to detail, transparent pricing, and professionalism don’t just streamline logistics—they give you breathing room to focus on settling in rather than stressing out. From careful packing to dependable delivery, it’s the kind of support that reminds you a fresh start doesn’t have to feel like an uphill climb.

Don’t Skip the Rituals

Relocating can scramble even the most basic routines. If morning jogs, Sunday meal prep, or daily journaling were your thing before, bring them with you. Repeating those habits in your new space helps rewire your brain to feel at home. It might feel awkward at first to jog in a neighborhood where you don’t recognize anyone or write in a journal surrounded by unpacked boxes, but the consistency pays off. These routines become anchors—signals that life is continuing, even if it looks different now.

And if your old rituals don’t quite fit anymore, that’s fine too. Change invites reevaluation. Maybe you discover a yoga class nearby that helps you reset. Maybe your new kitchen inspires different meals. Keep what works, tweak what doesn’t.

Let the Quiet Moments Teach You

One of the most underrated parts of adapting to a new city is learning to sit with the quiet. Before the invites come in, before your social calendar fills up again, there will be stillness—and maybe some loneliness. This isn’t a red flag. It’s part of the process.

In that space, pay attention to what you’re drawn to. Do you find yourself walking through a nearby park more than once? Bookmarking a local bookstore’s event calendar? Following a dog rescue group’s updates even if you don’t own a pet yet? These gentle leanings can shape the version of you that takes root in this new place. And they’re often more honest than the checklist of “things you should do in a new city.”

Create Connection, Not Just Contacts

When people say “make new friends,” what they really mean is “rebuild trust and familiarity from scratch,” which is exhausting and rarely quick. Don’t pressure yourself to recreate your entire social network overnight. Begin with proximity. Say hello to the barista who sees you three times a week. Talk to the neighbor whose dog always barks at yours. Ask someone in your building about their go-to takeout spot.

You don’t have to find your forever people right away. But forming even one or two stable touchpoints can make a new city feel less anonymous. And once you feel less like a stranger, opportunities for deeper connection start to show up where you least expect them.

Let the City Shape You

There’s a weird kind of pressure to “conquer” a new place. To know all the best spots. To find your scene. To feel like a local within six months. But what if instead of trying to shape the city around you, you let it shape you?

Cities—like people—have personalities. Some are caffeinated and fast-talking. Others are reflective and slow to reveal their best parts. Give your city room to surprise you. Maybe you’ve always been a gym person but end up hooked on hiking. Maybe your work-from-home rhythm shifts after discovering a café that plays jazz all day. The more flexible you are, the more naturally your new life can evolve.

Give Yourself More Time Than You Think

There’s a reason most advice says it takes a full year to feel truly settled. It’s not just about the place—it’s about who you become while adapting to it. Some weeks will feel like progress. Others will feel like backsliding. That’s normal.

You’ll notice turning points—like the first time you give someone directions, or when a local store clerk recognizes you. These moments don’t show up all at once, but they do add up. And they’re worth waiting for.

Stay Open, But Keep Your Boundaries

Newness has a way of making you say yes to everything. Invites you’d usually decline. Events that don’t actually interest you. It’s part survival instinct, part curiosity. And that’s not all bad. But stay mindful of what actually fills your cup and what drains it.

Saying yes to too much can leave you just as burned out as saying no to everything. Experiment, sure—but do it with your energy levels in mind. You didn’t move to be a social robot. You moved to build something real.

Relocating isn’t just about addresses and ZIP codes. It’s about identity. How you translate yourself into new surroundings. What you keep. What you outgrow. And how you choose to show up even when everything feels unfamiliar. With a little patience, a few solid habits, and some help from trusted resources along the way, the newness won’t last forever. Eventually, it’ll just be your life. And the best part? You get to decide what that looks like now.
