The Astronomers Monument, positioned in front of Griffith Observatory, was completed in 1934 as part of a New Deal Public Works of Art Project. Designed by artist Archibald Garner with contributions from five other sculptors, the 40-foot concrete obelisk is encircled by six sculpted Art Deco figure of foundational astronomers--Copernicus (designed by Garner himself), Hipparchus (Gordon Newell), Galileo Galilee (Djey el Djey, a.k.a. Donal Hord’s assistant, real name Djey Owens), Johannes Kepler (Arnold Foerster), Sir Isaac Newton (George Stanley), and William Herschel (Roger Noble Burnham)--and crowned by a bronze armillary sphere.

The Griffith Observatory, opened in 1935 on the south slope of Mount Hollywood, was designed by architects John C. Austin and Frederick M. Ashley in a streamlined Art Deco style. Funded by philanthropist Griffith J. Griffith, the observatory was built to make astronomy accessible to the public, featuring a central copper-clad dome, two flanking telescope domes, and an expansive terrace overlooking Los Angeles. Inside, it houses the Samuel Oschin Planetarium, historic Zeiss telescope, and exhibitions on space and science. Over the decades it has become both a scientific landmark and a major filming location--most famously for Rebel Without a Cause, Terminator, La La Land, and the Transformers—-and remains one of the city’s most visited cultural institutions.

The big curves here, the unwrapped ellipses, recall Rebecca Gieseking's masterful twists in her diagonal shift vases. All the smaller curves are circle arcs. (Not that you have to use circle arcs -- they're just easier to draw and to keep track of.)

Tycho Brahe'nin Astronomiye Katkıları: Tarihsel Bir Bakış

Rönesans döneminin parlak yıldızlarından biri, Tycho Brahe, astronomi biliminin sınırlarını zorlayan ve yıldızların gizemlerini çözme konusunda devrim yaratan bir figürdür. 16. yüzyılın bu büyük Danimarkalı gökbilimcisi, gözlemlerin gücünü kullanarak gökyüzünün sırlarını açığa çıkarmış ve modern astronomiye zemin hazırlamıştır.

Brahe'nin yaşamı, kendi döneminin bilim anlayışını şekillendiren olağanüstü gözlemler, yenilikçi teoriler ve kişisel trajedilerle doludur. Onun astronomik çalışmaları, gökbilimi konusundaki bilgimizi derinleştirmiş ve sonraki nesillerin evreni anlamasına ışık tutmuştur.

Brahe'nin gözlemleri, döneminin en ileri tekniklerini kullanarak, gökyüzündeki cisimlerin doğasını ve hareketlerini dikkatli bir şekilde kaydetmiştir. Kendi evren modeli ve gezegen hareketlerine dair gözlemleri, daha sonra Johannes Kepler ve diğer bilim insanları tarafından kullanılarak modern astronomik anlayışın temellerini atmıştır. Brahe'nin bilime katkıları, yalnızca astronomi alanında değil, bilimsel düşünce ve metodoloji açısından da devrim niteliğindedir.

Bu yazıda, Tycho Brahe'in hayatını, onun bilime getirdiği yenilikleri ve astronomi tarihindeki yerini detaylı bir şekilde ele alacağız. "Planetenbrunnen" von Augustin Kaltenecker, Peter Guet, 1582. Auf der Mittelsäule aus Granit ist ein Bronzezylinder aufgesetzt, um den sich sechs Personen gruppieren, welche die Planeten darstellen (Luna, Merkur, Venus, Mars, Sol, Saturn). Als Bekrönungsfigur erhebt sich Jupiter auf einem zylindrischen Sockel, der auf einer großen Kugel aufsitzt. Die sieben Planetenfiguren repräsentieren das ptolemäische System. Die Kugel ist mit vier geflügelten wasserspeienden Delphinen, auf denen Putten reiten, geschmückt. Zwischen diesen befinden sich vier geflügelte Puttenköpfe die mit leeren Wappenkartuschen bekrönt sind.

A bird's-eye view of medieval Regensburg, lightly sprinkled with December snow.
In the foreground a medieval street canyon, the Keplerstrasse.
Johannes Kepler, the famous astronomer and mathematician lived and died here in house number 5 on November 15, 1630.
He actually wanted to talk to Emperor Ferdinand II in Regensburg about outstanding salaries.
His grave in the Petersfriedhof was destroyed in the Thirty Years' War in the battles around Regensburg and can no longer be located.
