UMM .. this

Some of my artist friends ended up in a local bar after a meeting last night. I'm sure in the history of artist that has never happened before. {If you can't read the sarcasm, then you may not want read this blog post.) Apparently, a few years ago, on of the artist suggested they all talk about where they want their art careers and lives to be in the next five years. But instead of just toasting to the hopes, they'd go around in the circle and get a bit of advice on how to make those dreams happen. Like for real.

When the conversation started, I thought they'd never actually talk about the careers and dreams of each artist for more than a passing moment but I was completely wrong. They each put a lot of love and thought into their responses to each other. I'm relatively new to this group, but I consider them my friends, and I really respect the art that they are making. So when they got around to me, I felt compelled to take notes on what they said, granted it was midnight, and we were at a bar. I only took really good notes on what was said to me about my goals, but I wish I had written it down. A lot of what was said does, or will apply to me.

I've often questioned what it means to be an artist, I've struggled in calling myself and artist. Which, of course, make it hard to really talk about my "art" career. But it was a good exercise and I wanted to participate so ... If I remember correctly, this is what I said:

I will have sold an original painting, for more than $20
I will have my architecture license. (I guess I think of my architecture career as part of my art career, who knew.)
Use both my real estate license and architecture license to become an evil developer. MUAW (Did I mention we were at a bar?)
For serious tho: Figure out how to merge my interest in art, architecture and urbanism.
Find more venues for show and installations.

So how do get there?

Have a show (or two). oh yeah.
Document work! It's will be the only way to pitch to other venues. My City of Night piece, "Falling" was thought to be one of the best ones to activate space, but it was really hard to photograph. Taking a bit more time thinking about how my work, especially installation work can be represented to other venues, will expand my opportunities to show.
Give Tara my thesis.
Just get my architecture license, this is something that seems really hard, but if I make it a priority I could do it in less than a year.
Watch, Ted Talks about artist who made city happier; Read the The Design of Everyday Things.
Do (even) MORE research on where art and architecture overlap, this will readily inspire my work.
Write about my backwards career, find speaking engagements to talk about my unique perspective.

Last week I had coffee and a wonderful conversation with my friend and artist Candice Pack, who paints under the nome-de-brush "Mari". Mari's intriguing abstract work will be on display at 464 Gallery (464 Amherst St. Buffalo NY) in her solo show: Brainwashed, An Abstract Interpretation of Color Psychology.

Ms. Pack is from originally from Albuquerque, New Mexico, but moved to Syracuse NY to attend Syracuse University 2001. She's a relative new comer to Buffalo, and has only been here for about 2 years. However, she tells me that she has been pleasantly surprised at the growing and active art scene here in Buffalo. I'm sure, this has everything to do with how active she's become here. Mari is currently serving as a board member of the ELAB (Emerging Leaders in Arts Buffalo), she is also a coordinator for this groups annual City of Night event. I've seem her and her colorful and lively work at a number of art festivals and fairs in the region. She maybe new to the area, but she's jumped right in to the art and artist scene here.

My first questions for artist is usually this: Do you consider yourself an artist? Mari answered with an immediate and resounding "YES!" What makes her an artist, "That's my passion!" She tells me that blank walls
and canvasses inspire her.

"You don't have to make a living at it to be an artist," she explains,"because most of us can't."

When asked if she has traditional art training she told me she hadn't, well maybe a little. She got into art school, specifically graphic design at Syracuse University, but later transferred to their business school. Mari continued her art on her own, "learning by trial and error, from art books, and testing different materials."

As always, I'm interested in how art crosses boundaries, and sits in the in between spaces of genres and disciplines. Mari takes a lot of her inspiration from science, especially the psychology; she's likes to explore how the brain processes color. Pay attention to the titles of her paintings: Earth, Air, and Water. You can tell her body of work is about the what ancient scientist thought were the basic elements of the universe. She tells that the art-science boundary has always fascinated artist and scientist.

So, how does this painter approach a blank canvass? Many of us got to visit her studio and see her poured paint method at her North Buffalo studio at last months ARTLab art critique. Even if it is unplanned, it is anything but random.

"I pick color before composition, its the first thing I'm drawn too."

The first thing you'd notice about this artist is her energy and passion for art. She manages to translate that exact energy and passion to the canvass. She asked the attendants of last month's open art critique,"How do these colors make you feel?" My answer,"ALIVE"

My artwork, mailed to me!

Imagine my surprise when one of my FaceBook friends mentioned that they saw my painting on the Buffalo Art Studio fall flier. I got the flier yesterday and hadn't noticed myself. It was such a thrill to see my artwork imprint. This isn't even the finished piece!

"The Streets Were Wet"

I'm hoping that a lot of people see and like my painting. But even more importantly, this is a huge inspiration to keep painting. I'm sorry it took so long to post this, I ended up leaving for a trip just after. I wish I had taken more pictures but it really was a wonderful project and event. I can only thank coordinators Dana Saylor and Marissa Lehner for all their hard work, and a special thanks to my co-conspirator Ron Shaw.

"Falling" Installation proposal

Silo City will be hosting Buffalo second annual City of Night Buffalo in less than a week. Event organizers bill this as a celebration of Buffalo history art culture and sustainability. Last year's event Drew more than 3000 people, and nearly 7000 are expected to enjoy Buffalo's emerging most creative and performing artists on the backdrop of its historic industrial past. Music, beer, food trucks, Performances, Site-specific art installations (including the project that I'm working on with Ron Shaw), light exhibits and art fair will Start at during the afternoon and go well into the night.

The is the events second year and I'd like to thank the organizers in advance, they've done such a great job of keeping the artist informed, and keeping us inspired. I'd like to mention them all here, but instead why don't you just come down to the event and meet some Buffalo's biggest advocates, and leaders in person.

In the last few months I've had a lot of changes. I'm no long working at the firm I was last year, in fact I left there more than 4 months ago. I got my real estate license, and if you want to buy or sell a house contact me here. So far that's been great, mostly because its allowing me to direct a little more time to art. If I've learned nothing in the last year, aside from my family and closest friends, I must keep art at the center of life, letting other things get in the way is not good for me at all! I haven't done quite as many paintings as I'd like to recently but that's partially because I've been working on a proposal for and very interesting art event later this summer:

I'm hoping that my submission gets picked, I worked really hard on it, but if I do get to do the installation that will mean considerably less time for painting, instead I'll be hanging around these grain elevators and blowing up balloons. Judge for yourself, here's my idea. Its been a very long time since I've done any installation, sometime back in grad school I'm sure. However I really want art to remain the center of my life, and so I've not only been doing more work, but started to be more active in a the ELAB arts organization. Being around artist really puts a fire under my b*ty!I articularly the open critiques that they hold every third thursday called ArtLab.

Anyway The City of Night celebration is a really great event and I love this arts organization, and what these folks are doing here in Buffalo, so I wanted to be a part of it.

Wish me luck. I took a lot of hints from one of my favorite artist and artist coaches: Kesha Bruce's studio blog: Artist Linda Brenner Talks About Her Experience of Writing Her Exhibition Proposal for "The Ghost Cats".

There will be more paintings over the next few months I'm sure. I'm months behind on a commission for my brother, and I've got a jolt of inspiration for images of scenes from a imaginary house.

OOHH I almost forgot. I'm also going to be reading poetry during Buffalo Infringement Festival with the saucebox feminist poetry troupe started my by dear dear friend Robin Brox!

what to paint?

I'm on winter break with my kids, I had a terrific Christmas and I can't wait until New Years. I was so looking forward to some snowed in days of relaxing and painting. Here I am writing a blog post. Because I just can't get started.

I can't imagine why, I feel like my painting has taken so many giant leaps forward this year. I've painted a lot, and I feel like my paintings have been steadily improving. I've even had some success in selling prints & even a small original, at a couple local pop-up markets this season. So what is keeping me from painting today? Its actually been maybe 4-6 weeks since I've put brush to canvass. The only thing stopping me is me!

I've written about creative block and procrastination before, and more than a year ago I said that I'd promise to make at least 12 crappy paintings in the following 12 months. In fact I did more than 12 paintings, and not all of them were completely crappy. I participated in the Artfix 2012 at home Residency, I did a painting a day for 3 weeks strait and I took an oil painting class in the last year, and worked more on my "the streets were" project. That's a lot.

I think I even did pretty good on last year's New Year's Resolutions, except I did end up doing a lot of finding myself. As it turns out, I really am in my happy place when I'm making art. I wish it felt like enough. I wish I could conquer the self doubts that are keeping me from being in the studio right now. I want to keep pushing my work, but sometimes it makes it so hard to get started. I likely won't be able to paint everyday, with work and a few more Architecture License exams on the horizon it seems like a bit too much. I know I need to fit it in. Ok enough moaning and complaining, I'm going to go start something.

I ate on Thanksgiving, I balked at Black Friday, I slept thru Cyber Monday. I will have the best gifts ever for my friends and family this year.

The mall has always bothered me and I've tried everything to avoid it in the past I've gone all homemade gifts, or all gifts starting with the letter R. These were not as big hits as I had hoped. This year I've got a sure winner. I'm going LOCAL for the holidays. (and you should too!)

A Painting a Day: Week 2

I'm not going to write about these much right now. I'm still enjoying this project, and I think after the holidays I may extend it. I know that these are just beginner paintings but I'm thinking of making a few prints to sell at the Holiday pop up markets that will be springing this season. A Painting a Day: Week 1

A Painting a Day, keeps the creative block, insomnia , doldrums, 'crazy-no-art-Kisha AWAY! Or so, I've learned in the last week.

Many of you have been watching my instagram/ or twitter feed where I've been posting daily paintings. This weeks marks the first of a three week project where I paint a small painting everyday. I'm not sure what finally prompted me to do this, even at 30- 40 mins. a day, its time consuming.This means I have to get up very very early in the morning, but in stead of it being a drag, I've felt energized.

Day 3: 30 mins.

Day 1: 40 mins.

Day 2: 40 mins.

In my writing about creative-block and making more time for art. I've suggested to my self such a project, or even making 12 crappy paintings over the course of a year. I'm going to make 21 or more, really little and maybe a little crappy paintings. It doesn't matter what I paint, these aren't 'master peices', heck they're only 4x4 or 6x6. What matters is that I paint them. I love painting, I really want to get much better at it. The only way to do this is to practice. I tell my son this all the time when it comes to playing the violin. I guess I should practice what I preach.

Day 4: 30 mins.

Day 5: 30 mins.

Not all of these have been as successful as I would have like, but there they are. Some are from life, others from photos. Hopefully, they improve over time, hopefully this becomes a regular habit and I get to have more art in my life. Wish me luck, or better yet come up with a 20-40 min creative exercise for your self, and join me!

Day 6: probably 90 mins

I am particularly proud of my egg painting. This took a bit longer than the other, in part because I didn't wake up early and paint before work. I overslept that day so I ended working on it in the evening, without setting an alarm or looking at the clock. Its amazing out absorbed I got into my work.

I'm at home with a sore throat today so I didn't get up early to paint again today. Luckily I did a sketch under painting during my painting class yesterday. (you can see what I'm working on there in my last post.) So I'm going to get away from this computer and finish up this panel, right now! I love comments and feedback. So please let me know what you think!

I know its been about forever since I've posted here. The big change in my life is that I have a (mostly) full time job. It was something that I needed desperately for both my income and sense of well being. I got really lucky and found I job I'm really enjoying!

Also I've prepared for (and passed) another of the 7 sections of the Architect Registration Examination, meaning that I'm just that much closer to being a real life architect. And if that wasn't enough I'm starting a Buffalo Chapter of Architecture for Humanity because clearly I didn't have enough to do. Needless to say the blogging has suffered. I haven't posted anything in months! What have have missed the most in the last few months of frenzied activity and being at home most of the time has been painting. I decided to enroll in an actual class at Buffalo Arts Studio if for no other reason than to make myself reserve some studio time.

I decided to continue on my "The Streets Were..." series of paintings, because I promised my self I'd do at least 12 of them. It had been my hope to finish all 12 in a year. Its been 13 months since I finished the one that I documented in the post More Painting Progress. I've done only three in between, not counting the one I'm working on now. I keep saying that I want art to be a more important part of my life, but other things keep getting in the way. However, how am I going to make painting any more than an occassional hobby if I don't keep at it?

I'm sharing the progress in the hopes that a positive response will help be redouble my efforts to paint more, and that a negative response will do the same. My life has been going through so many positive changes lately, and the last hold out has been carving out more time to paint! Its based on a few phone photo's that I took of my son a few years ago. My very talented teacher Thomas Rojek suggested that I do the three as a triptych and I'm really glad he did, even if it means it has already taken more than on session to complete.

I know its been forever since I've posted! Part of the problem has been that my laptop is no longer working. I have signed up for a of the Architect Record Exam (ARE), as many of you know I've working towards an architecture license right now. More about that process in the near future. Last weekend was the Allentown Arts Festival/ Allen West Arts Festival here in Buffalo. For many here, it is the unofficial start of summer. I've entered exclusive, juried, and more formal (read: expensive) Allentown Arts Festival in 1998, but never have again in the last 14. In part because furniture doesn't sell nearly so well in that kind of atmosphere and i didn't recover my cost.

So as this years festival approached I didn't really think about it. Fortunately for me, my friend at Sp@ce 224 Gallery (224 Allen, Buffalo NY), right on Allen had decided to fill its walls especially for the show. So in a minor panic, I gathered my favorite paintings and hung them. The real panic set in when I realized I had to attach prices, but that is another post for another time.

No sales, but I did get to talk to a number of artist. I didn't realize how much I really crave feedback on my work. Of course, it was all pretty positive. Maybe its hard to really critical when there is the lingering air of kettle corn. I guess the biggest think I want to do is make more paintings! All in all I had a great time, and it guess it helped me fine tune my "elevator pitch" for my work, and work on some other avenues for selling more of it.

I just knew that I needed a space to talk about things that didn't really fit into my other blog, Untagged Seeds, which is largely about my children. What is an art gallery (or museum)?

at University at Buffalo's Art Gallery

I have a lot of pictures of galleries in this blog. Because I love them, some of them I've loved since childhood. The Carnegie Museum of Natural History and Scaiffe Galleries were my teen hangout, and second home. I love the Hall of Architecture, and Sculpture Hall. They were why I went architecture school. It was grand, intended to be a monument for the city and the art world. Today I was at the University at Buffalo Center for the Arts attending a seminar there and for the first time got a chance to explore the gallery. To be honest, I was surprised that i had never wandered in there. I find myself in the building for all kinds of events, from my sister-in-law's high school, to my son's violin recital. Heck I'm even even when to grad school at UB, and had at least 2 classes in this building.

Big Orbit is NOT a monument

I also love Buffalo's own Big Orbit Gallery, and it is completely different.
